Well, how much? When I first joined, I felt like a fucking tool. I was constantly making certain song appreciation threads in the DT side, and I was just posting too much, I think. I've calmed down a lot, and while I still post a good bit, I am a little more reserved than I used to be. When I joined I was almost 16, and now I'm 19, so I guess I've matured some.
I like present me much better than past me.
-
I've changed drastically, but then again I've been here for quite a while. Although that's mainly in the last few years, I've changed quite a bit I think. In other ways, I haven't changed at all and probably never will.
-
When I joined I was a freshman in college (almost 14 years ago). I've never been much of an active poster on the forums, so on that end I haven't changed much. I really only post when I feel I have something to add.
In life though, a lot changes in 14 years :lol
-
A lot, considering it's been well over 10 years. I was a semi-retarded postwhore when I started.
-
Very little.
-
When I go back and look at my first posts on here, I cringe a little.
-
I think I got a thicker skin, but I've always kept my annoying asshole persona consistent.
-
Other than being a junkie for this place, not much. Been here about 9 years now. My kids are older, I'm still bald, and I've got a handful of DTF meetups under my belt. I can't stand the DT-side noobs sometimes. I just wait until time weeds some of them out, and the ones that eventually migrate to GD and stick around (yourself, Mora, Scrop come to mind), I'm cool with them once they realize DTF is about more than just DT.
-
I can barely read the DT side myself most of the time, I usually have to skip certain threads or posts altogether. :lol But that's not exactly new behaviour, I've been doing that since day one.
As for how much I have changed since joining this forum, not that much I don't think. I haven't really been here that long.
-
Switched from two manly but diseased kidneys to one girly and healthy one. Other than that I haven't changed at all. I'm old. I'm done changing. I'll leave that to the young people who still haven't figured out who the fuck they are yet.
-
In all 2 months I've been here (had an account, that is), I don't think I've changed very much at all. I shed my musically aggressive/pretentious 13-year-old skin a good two years ago when I quit Yahoo Answers' Rock & Pop section (God, it was idiotic). That is certainly a positive thing for the users of this forum. When I joined I started trying to be more understanding and respective towards other opinions, and I also stopped getting involved in so many arguments. I occasionally find myself getting off topic in threads, but I do my best to avoid it. This is one of the most welcoming and friendly communities I've ever seen on the internet.
This forum has definitely been helpful in expanding my musical taste. I've found so many bands I enjoy, and so many DVD/Bootlegs/Demos/EPs I would have never known about from the bands I already enjoyed. I've been introduced to Haken, Frameshift, Pain Of Salvation, Sonata Arctica, Cynic, PT, Steven Wilson, Blackfield, Spock's Beard, Beardfish, and a ton of others as a result of DTF.
-
Now if someone asks if I'm DTF I say "yeah, I'd love to go on the Dream Theater Forums with you". I get some weird looks for that.

:lol
-
Fuck. Since 2005? A lot.
-
Well when I first joined I was a complete snob who almost exclusively listened to prog and hated 95% of what I listen to now. So a little bit I guess.
-
In four years, not much really. I'm more open to some kinds of music now, but I still mostly just lurk.
-
I'd say "not much" but that's not entirely true, especially given my post in the Lonely Hearts Club thread.
-
Well when I first joined I was a complete snob who almost exclusively listened to prog and hated 95% of what I listen to now. So a little bit I guess.
This pretty much. I was also very immature.
-
I was annoying as hell most likely. I joined a few days before BC&SL was released and a few people had been getting theirs early. I joined and was asking about tracking numbers and when other people's shipped. I was annoying. I think I progressed away from that.
-
I've aged considerably. I joined eons ago during the EZ Board days. There were member #s, and I was like #17 or something. My writing career was really amping up, and after a short while I didn't log in for more than a year, and had long forgotten passwords and the like; so I registered again.
-
I used to like music a lot more but a startling majority of the bands I liked in 2006 have become stale, changed for the worse, or disbanded. I'm still in a constant struggle to be as nice as I wish I really was and put on a decent humorous front to mask my many insecurities. I used to be a bit more annoyed by negative comments from others but I worked on that however I feel I'm not quite at my best in that regard over the last year or so. I also wanted to be widely accepted early on but now I'm more concerned with enjoying my interactions with those whom I've already befriended and letting newer forum friends naturally enter my world through natural interactions with me letting my balls hang in the breeze without pretense so to speak.
-

It would be way more tolerable if most of them spent some time lurking :lol

That's what DTF is for - burning a hole in your wallet and your hard drive.
-
Considering I was 18 when I joined, I'd say I've changed a shit ton. As I've gotten older, my posting has become less frequent, but I'm still here.
-
Well, I joined DT.net about 10 years ago, so that would make me a 15 year old, piece of shit teenager. I wish I could go back and look at a lot of my original posts, I'm sure there were some gems. Even if I look at posts from five years ago, I feel like they are written in a much less mature fashion. I look at posts from 10+ years ago on RC truck forums and they are laughable. I was such a douche.
-
I think even 14 years ago I was at least *trying* to not be a douche, but I'm sure I was an immature little prickboy much of the time. I probably still am, considering I don't really have any intentions of growing up.
-
My music library expanded.
-
I was 17 when I started here, 24 now. And y'all still forget my birthday.
-
I would say quite a bit. My opinions are not as strong willed and I am more tolerant of others opinions. I try to be more respectful in general.
In real life so much has happened in the past five years since I have been here and that has changed me as well. I don't take insignificant stuff to heart much anymore.

Okay, this is the oldest post I can find from my past. This was from August 2001.... It makes me cringe.
"I have a nitro stamede and it is a great truck. I want to upgrade it to the point were it is completly different from my friends. I have seen pics of stampedes with juggernut tires. how is this possible, do I just by juggernut tires or do i need all new axles and that stuff. Also I have burned through a gallon of gas in 6 days. y is this. my engine is just sucking gas like crazy how can I fix this.
One last question. If i USED 25% NITRO FUEL WOULD THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE"
Looking back at the forum the post above came from... turns out my account "roadster" was banned about two months into my stay. I made a new account under the username "Dragster". Here is how I returned;
hey its me roadster, i dont kbnow why but traxxas shut off my activation so i couldn't post anything. anyway i have a question. I was just driving my n-pede and it ran out of gas, i went over and refilled it but it wouldn't start. I figured mabye its to hot out and its overheated, but no. Its been a month and I have brought it to my lhb and they couldn't find out what the problem is. anyone have any suggestions.
:rollin :rollin
I'm embarrassed to even post such noob behavior.

2001? Really? Where did you post that in 2001?
-
I joined about 2000-ish - the forum had the 6DOIT theme at the time. I'd like to say I haven't changed at all, but thinking about it, I probably have. I've changed jobs twice, I got a mortgage and bought my own place, and I'm certainly older, balder and more cynical. My Dad passed away, and Mom retired and moved away from the area, so I don't really see her all that often anymore. I've got into different music as a result of this forum, and I certainly go see more bands live than I used to.
-
Other than getting unceremoniously dumped by one lady and falling head over heels in love with another, I can't say I've changed much since I joined here the day On The Backs Of Angels was released.
Mind you those are pretty big friggin' changes :lol
-
*snip*

I'm not sure why, but the best part was "y is this."
I just picture reading something like that on Yahoo Answers :lol
-
I apparently didn't know what a question mark was when I was 12.
-
Best lol post I made on here was probably where I said something like "longer DT songs are the best because MORE DT=BETTER"
If I could, I would go back in time and spill hot coffee on my lap for saying that. How stupid.
-
I remain constant, unchanging, eternal.
lol
-
I think my average number of posts per day when I joined is equal to my average number of posts per year now.
-
Well I've gone from a fresh faced teenager to a balding bearded physicist, so there's that.
-
I think I've changed quite a bit, and a lot of what you (Luke) said in the first couple posts can be applied directly to me.
Sometimes I wish I could start over as the kind of poster I am now and erase all the things I might have said earlier. Not that I was a particularly bad person or anything like that, I just didn't think as much about a lot of the stuff I was posting. I'd like to think that has changed.
-
I have gotten exponentially worse.
-

I agree, but I guess it's all just part of development, right?

I agree. I can never run for president now. The quotes the media would pull out would be horrifying.
-
I've changed a lot. Not surprising considering I was like 15 when joining.
-
*snipped* I'm old. I'm done changing. I'll leave that to the young people who still haven't figured out who the fuck they are yet.
+1
Although, I am 70lbs lighter than I was when I signed up here.

Awesome :metal
-
I've actually changed a lot, I think. DTF was one of the first forums I ever joined. Scenes from a Memory had just come out, and some people were still arguing about Falling Into Infinity, so this was late 90's, at least 15 years ago.
I seemed to me that communicating via words only, with inflection provided by italics, bold, and underlining, was inherently limited and dangerous, and I know myself to be pretty opinionated and basically an asshole, so I didn't post much at first. It seemed better to post rarely, but have something important to say when you do say something, than to just post all the time.
Now I don't give a fuck.
But I think I've gotten better at posting, and gotten to be less of an asshole. And believe me, if you think I post a lot, you should see how much I delete, or how often I just close the window and not post after writing five or six paragraphs or more.
-

I'm doing that right now in the "Are Prog Fans More Open Minded" thread a lot at the moment, actually :lol
-
It's hard, isn't it? You want to think that everything you say is so important and you imagine everyone just hanging on your every word, but then (usually, hopefully) common sense kicks in and you switch from writer to editor before you hit "Post".
-
I remain constant, unchanging, eternal.
lol
Oh God, and I and all the DTF.com people were referring to you as a god.
-
Well I'm still a nub who joined not even a year ago so I'm inclined to say "not by much". Still probably one of these "DT-side noobs" as was stated earlier here :lol though I still post in GD whenever I feel I have something to contribute.
I'd like to think I've gotten a little better at articulating my thoughts at the very least.
-
My music library expanded.
Oh yeah, and this :lol
-
Library expanded, wallet contracted.
Damn you DTF!
-
I was 21 when I joined. I'm now 33.
Some days I don't feel like I've changed a bit, and other days I don't even recognize myself.
-
Assuming you mean how much have you changed as a poster...
I am definitely not as negative as I used to be. I reached a point where I was sick of negativity and arguing online, here and other places, and posting is a lot more fun now. I still have my negative moments :lol, and I know I come off as opinionated at times, but I think I am much more positive in general. :coolio

Hmmm, yeah.....I can't even begin to assess the changes I've made since joining the forum.

Looking at my most recent posts, it almost seems like I'm trying to become the Common Sense of DTF :lol

I don't think you post a lot, and I have always considered you one of the least asshole-ish people on the forum. Not that I'm implying we have a forum full of assholes. :lol But on a scale of 1 to asshole, you don't even rate on the scale.

You'd have an easier time trying to bring the internet to the Amish. :neverusethis:

hmmmm
When I joined here I was at pretty much the lowest point I've ever been. I won't go in to it but it'd make your hair turn grey. And if your hair is already grey then it'd fall out. And if you're bald then your head would explode.
In the four years or so I've been here I've managed to turn my life around and I'm happy. I have so much now that seemed impossible those few years ago and I'm grateful. I have a good job, my own house and a girlfriend that I adore (still early days but it's going swimmingly).
I've always had a rock solid relationship with my kids but all those other things I didn't have. And now I do.
The weekend before last me and my girlf went to watch Extreme on Friday in Manchester then DT in Sheffield on the Saturday. She even paid for the hotel and the DT tickets.....I think she is defo a keeper.
I dunno. Considering that I had been seriously contemplating suicide just 3 and 4 years ago I'd say things are pretty different now.
And hey for what it's worth, I always find some excellent light hearted entertainment here and some thought provoking discussion. So you guys that I don't know probably had a part to play in keeping me on that easily swayed even keel.
-
I remain constant, unchanging, eternal.
lol
Oh God, and I and all the DTF.com people were referring to you as a god.
Yeah. TBH, that was a little uncomfortable for me. But eventually, for me, it turned into a kind of running joke, and I just convinced myself that other people were playing along with the joke.
-
Hef and I have always been fellow deities. I'm not totally sure over what I rule, but I'm pretty sure Hef rules over the whole of Hatdom.

Well, for me personally, I mean, when I first started running the forum, there was the Care Bears theme. This year, it was a Flash Gordon theme. I think that speaks for itself.

If that isn't personal growth and maturity, I don't know what is.

It wasn't. We just announced that we had taken over, and not one person from the French "government" has refuted us yet.

Pretty sure I haven't changed a whole lot. Unless you count "striving to be more awesome" as change.

Coulda swore something pretty significant happened recently?
-
Well, yeah, I got married, and that was pretty major. Man, I still wish we didn't have to come back. It was like time stood still for a week. No cares except where my next drink was comng from.
But yeah, I meant personally/as a poster.
-
When I joined this forum I didn't have a Gibson SG.
-
When I joined this forum, I:
- was cleanshaven
- had no tattoos
- was not married (but I was already dating my wife)
- had no children
- had obscenely short hair
- drove a Mustang
- had no job
- was in college for 3D animation
- had no pets
- played drums almost constantly
- did not own a home
- did not have joint ownership of a beachfront condo
Now, 14 years later, I:
- have had some form of beard for the last 13 years, be it a Van Dyke, a full beard or the ever present and current goatee
- have roughly 20 hours of ink in me (with another 7-8 upcoming in the next few weeks)
- am happily married
- have an awesome son, with a daughter on the way
- have since grown my hair to over 3 feet, then lopped it all off again
- drive an Audi S4
- have a white collar management job
- moved into graphic design, then worked at an agency, and am now a marketing manager for a large automotive firm
- have an incredible pooch who is more family than many of my relatives
- hardly play drums anymore, though it still remains a part of who I am since I tend to drum on everything
- own a house
- have joint ownership of a beachfront condo
Yeah, I've changed a bit...
-
It's crazy to think that when I joined, "YouTube" wasn't a thing.

A little more than a year ago, I was obsessed with Rush and Dream Theater, and I was a complete idiot:

But let's not dwell on my awful, idiotic past ;D
Now, I know exactly what I want to do with my life, and I love a TON more music than just DT and Rush. In fact, classical music (generally of the Romantic era) has become my favorite genre. I've become a bit of a composer since then, just as a hobby, and you can find my music HERE (https://soundcloud.com/alittledangerous) if you're at all interested. I also began writing poetry during my time here, which you can find beginning HERE (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=5619.msg1707718#msg1707718) in that thread.
I'm going to college this coming year as a Music Education major, which I decided some time last year around wintertime I suppose. You've all been great.

HAHAHAHAH FOOLED YA
-
I was a pretty dorky virgin high schooler who didn't really spend much time out of his room when I joined. Now I have just spent a year in South America, teaching English and travelling around on my own, know what I want to do with my life (somewhat), lost a ton of weight, gained some really good friends along the way, and got laid.
So yeah, quite the change in two years, I'd say.

Thanks. We're really excited. She's due in November.

I hit my 4 year mark last week. Not much has changed except for the fact that I am a lot more conservative with what I post. I've figured out how turn my filter on. :lol
-
:lol
-
I was 14 when I joined DTF and now I'm 19, so I'd like to think I'm more mature now :D I never dare to read my earliest posts, because I'm sure I said some stupid things back then :lol
Anyway, 5 years ago I was a pretty insecure and shy guy who was bullied at school. I've gained more confidence since then, but it took me 3 years to find the courage to post a pic of myself here and add some of my DTF buddies on Facebook. I used to find the idea of someone on the Internet knowing my name and what I look like horrifying!
Also, my practical English skills have improved thanks to this forum! I was always pretty good at English, but I've discovered phrases, words, etc. that you don't learn at school. All that stuff has been invaluable for me, especially now that I'm studying English language and literature at uni :)
Last but not least: my musical tastes have broadened and I've discovered great bands, in part thanks to some fellow members around here :metal
Oh, and:
I am a lot more conservative with what I post. I've figured out how turn my filter on. :lol
-
I've had these experiences on another website, but now, being sixteen, some of the naivete has been replaced with much denser cockiness.
-
I never dare to read my earliest posts, because I'm sure I said some stupid things back then :lol
I'm sure he'll rejoin DT at some point in the future. It was his band for 25 years, he'll probably miss those times and want to rejoin the band.
:lol

Lately I've noticed that it seems I swear less in my posts. In the past, it looked like someone loaded a shotgun with profanity and blasted all of my posts with it. This may have to do with the fact that I intentionally restricted myself from using profanity on Facebook, as I've friended most of my family. I guess the habit just carried over. Not in real life, that's for sure.

I never dare to read my earliest posts, because I'm sure I said some stupid things back then :lol
I'm sure he'll rejoin DT at some point in the future. It was his band for 25 years, he'll probably miss those times and want to rejoin the band.
:lol
Oh come on, that was two days after the dramatic turn of events! :lol Anyway, after a quick peek it looks like my very first posts from 2009 have disappeared, but I was more of a lurker at first anyway.
I just remembered another little change: I never even looked at the GD side until a year or two after I'd joined :D

Yeah, sorry about that Hef. I was one of the joke-y guys.

I'm pretty ashamed of how vanilla my writeups for the top 50 DT songs were. Really.

I felt like I used to be a thread killer but now I feel like less of one.

No problem. They were more innocent times. I miss them sometimes.

Pretty impressive how you brought a picture of your future self (circa 2017 I'm guessing) back from the future. Nice skullet :tup

I'm kind of the reverse. I was voted best thread starter in the past, now I'm probably best thread ender.

When I joined, I hadn't listened to a single song off of SFAM or SDOIT. In fact, the only album of theirs I had listened to in full was Octavarium.

When I joined, bosk1 was my father.
