Yeah, so I heard that all the cool people were doing this, so I figured I'd do it and maybe trick people into thinking I was cool.
So, first, music I like. The majority of what I listen to is metal of some description, i.e., power, prog, death etc. However, I do enjoy a number of artists outside this realm as well. Basically, there are no real restrictions as to what you can send. There's no group/artist that I'll dismiss based just on genre (rap and country I don't often enjoy, but if you've got something you think I'd like, by all means, send it). I also enjoy pretty much any type of harsh vocals, so don't worry about sending only songs with clean vox. In addition, as some of you may know, I like some really strange music as well. If you think something's just too strange to send, send it anyway. I'll probably like it. :P
So, let's talk rules (or lack thereof). This is going to be a pretty basic roulette, I'm not planning on including any twists or any sort of side games, basically you send a song, get a score, rinse and repeat. This may sound unexciting, but do you really think I care? ( :P ). Songs will be scored from 1-10. I'm thinking that any band scoring, say, 7 or over will be banned from being sent again.
I haven't decided regarding the number of rounds, but I'm currently thinking that 9 is a good number. Once we see how the pace of the roulette goes, that number may be revised.
I'm generally thinking I'm going to stay away from theme rounds for the most part, leaving most of them as open rounds, because I think the less restriction you have, the more interesting stuff you're able to send. I will say, however, if everyone just sends Generic Prog Metal Band X, some theme restrictions will be put in place. :P In the event themes are used, songs will be given two scores: the regular, 1-10 score, plus a score from 1-5 based on how well it fits the given theme.
At this point, I'm not planning to restrict song length either, though note, the longer your song is, the less I'll be able to listen to it completely in comparison to other, shorter songs. So only send epics if you feel they make a pretty immediate impression.
And, uh... I guess that's everything. Let me know if there's anything I missed. Sign up is now open, and I don't have any real restrictions on the number of participants either. If things become overwhelming, I'll eliminate some of you.

Put me on that list, let's see where does this goes :coolio.
-
You got it. :tup
-
Sign me up, I've got some cool stuff to show ya. ;)
-
I'm in
-
I'd like to play, if you'll have me! :)
-
Got all of y'all.
-
There's enough melodic rock and metal on the list to indicate I may not be out of my comfort zone. I don't really do "weird" ;D
I'm in if you're ok with that.
-
I'm down with most kinds of music, non-weird included, I just want to make sure people don't exclude something because it's "too weird", because it most likely isn't (though I have been wrong before).
-
I'll join ;D
-
I'll join :)
-
Gotcha.
-
I'll pass, and let others have a go. Just wanted to say :tup :tup to having Mind's Eye and Triosphere on the banned list. Not nearly enough love around here for either.
-
Man, Triosphere is awesome. I wish there were more female vocalists with voices like Ida.
-
Man, Triosphere is awesome. I wish there were more female vocalists with voices like Ida.
There are a few.
How many people were you wanting in this thing anyway? You should put YtseBtsySpider on the list... he's been jones'g to get into a Roulette, and publicly stated so in the tracker thread.
-
I ain't putting a limit on it. I'm taking anyone who wants in.
-
I've been thinking for a few months now that I would like to join your roulette, but I was only going to do so if it was theme-less. :lol What are the odds? Count me in.
I don't think I have much on the metal side to offer you though, so the majority of what I send will probably be electronica/synthpop/shitlikethat.
-
I need to get into more of that stuff, so I think this will work out beautifully.
-
I might even send one of my own pieces of music. Surely they wouldn't be banned. :lol

ROUND 1 RESULTS
Scorpion - Anciients - Raise The Sun - 8 points
I really liked this track. As I mentioned before, the opening of the song reminds me a bit of Agalloch, although that impression is dispelled later on when the riff and vocals come in. Both are still great, however. The harsh vocals are really nice, as is the instrumental section near the end, which seems like an actual composed instrumental section, rather than just solos. I don't really have any complaints about this song. Very nice, definitely interested in checking out more of their stuff.
Sacul - David Maxim Micic - Wrinkle Maze - 7 points
I've heard of this group or artist (not sure which) before, but this marks the first time I've heard any of their/his music. To be honest, it's not quite what I was expecting. I'm actually not even sure what kind of music this is. It's instrumental, it's slow building, it's quite beautiful at times. I suppose it might be post-rock, but even that doesn't seem to quite fit. Whatever it is, though, I really enjoyed it. Thanks for this one.
adace - Alcest - Autre Temps - 8 points
I've heard a bit of Alcest before, but never listened to them extensively. I suppose I should rectify this, if this song is any indicator of quality. It's beautiful, calming and ethereal. I don't really have that much to say about this one, other than that's it was really good.
Nekov - Subsignal - My Sanctuary - 7 points
I've heard of Subsignal before, but never taken the time to actually check them out. This song surprised me with a great, major-sounding guitar riff, and the rest of the song maintained that positive vibe. The singer has a really great voice, although I don't particularly for the harmony parts, I prefer the sections where it's just one layer of his voice by itself. The best part of the song for me, though, is the guitar solo, which is absolutely amazing, though I wish it was a bit longer. So yeah, I liked this one.
senecadawg2 - Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name - 5 points
There is a reason Iron Maiden wasn't on my banned artists list. Despite their status in the world of metal, I've really just never cared for Maiden. This song, unfortunately, wasn't much of an exception. The guitar work is pretty cool, but I've really never been big on Bruce as a vocalist, and I don't find the melodies all that interesting. I feel bad for this, since I know a lot of people really love Maiden, but I just ca'nt get into them. Sorry. :(
bl5150 - Conception - Roll The Fire - 7 points
Man, Tore Østby is awesome. It's a shame he doesn't do much these days. His guitar work is fantastic as usual here, though I suppose the real standout is Khan. It's interesting to hear him in this context, he seems a less restrained than he was with Kamelot; he hits some pretty high notes here. I suppose my only complaint about the song is that, despite Khan's greatness, a few of the melodies don't sit very well with me. Still, it's a minor complaint, as this was a great song.
Lucien - Shostakovich - Symphony No. 5 Finale - 8 points
I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from this initially, as I don't listen to a whole lot of classical music. I really enjoyed this piece, though. The near manic pace of the beginning is a perfect contrast to the slower ending. I can't really compare it to anything else, because as I said I don't know a lot of classical stuff, but I definitely enjoyed this one.
LieLowTheWantedMan - Built To Spill - Randy Described Eternity - 9 points
I think this is the only submission where I had never even heard of the group prior to this. This song was really amazing, I've never really heard anything else quite like it. As you said, the guitar layering is fantastic, and really adds a lot to the song. I can see some people being rubbed the wrong way by the vocals, but I think they're fantastic and suit the song perfectly. I don't really have much else to say here, except that I'll definitely be checking out more of their music.
Bolsters - CHVRCHES - The Mother We Share - 10 points
Oddly enough, I'd heard the name before, but just assumed they were some black metal type thing (the kvlt-y spelling is what caused that :P ). What this song turned out to be, though, is a fantastic, catchy synthpop track. I really don't have much to say here; the song is perfect, the instrumentation is perfect, the singer is perfect, the whole thing is just great. Send me more stuff like this. :P
Onno - Leprous - Forced Entry - 8 points
Leprous have been recommended to me on multiple occasions, but for whatever reason I've never gotten around to checking them out. They remind of Haken a little bit, in that they put their own twist on the usual progressive metal mold. I really enjoy the vocalist (not sure if it's the same guy doing clean and harsh?) and the instrumentation is fantastic as well. I'm sure I'll be checking them out more in the future.
So, here are the standings thus far:
Bolsters - 10
LieLowTheWantedMan - 9
adace - 8
Lucien - 8
Onno - 8
Scorpion - 8
bl5150 - 7
Nekov - 7
Sacul - 7
senecadawg2 - 5
ROUND 2
Same rules. Send music. Hopefully good music. :P
-
Glad you liked Leprous! I really have to give big props to Lucien here though; sending Shostakovich is pretty fucking amazing!
-
the song is perfect, the instrumentation is perfect, the singer is perfect, the whole thing is just great.
Send me more stuff like this.
No pressure... :lol
Definitely check out their album. That song is very representative of what's on it, so pretty much the whole thing should be a hit with you. Also, Round 2 dispatched.
-
Glad you liked it so much. I think you'd love the album that it's on (Perfect From Now On) in that case.
-
:lol not what I was expecting. I should've know better
-
Seems it was a good round for you, not so much for me though :P. Will send something later.

Maybe you should've sent Can I Play With Madness 'dawg. :lol
-
Hallowed Be Thy Name = lowest score.
Does. Not. Compute.
Thank you! Frankly, I was shocked. I mean, I get it- different strokes for different folks. But still... In my experience it seems like most folks enjoy the song a little bit even when they aren't IM fans.
Then again, the fact that it wasn't on the banned artist list is pretty telling. I just figured maybe he hadn't ever checked them out seriously, like myself up until a couple years ago. Oh well :)
-
I'm actually not even sure what kind of music this is. It's instrumental, it's slow building, it's quite beautiful at times. I suppose it might be post-rock, but even that doesn't seem to quite fit.
It's a great blend of DT, Devin Townsend, The mars volta, and lots of djent and math rock. It happens that this song is one of his more melodic stuff :coolio.
PS: Sent.

Glad you liked Leprous! I really have to give big props to Lucien here though; sending Shostakovich is pretty fucking amazing!
It's one of those pieces I use in almost all of the roulettes. Sometimes I get a 9.5, sometimes I get a 3. ;D

High risk, high reward
-
Sent for round 2.
-
Perhaps I should have issued a warning for anyone trying to send Maiden. :lol
For some reason I've never been able to get into them. I live in hope that the right song will manifest itself, though.
-
meh… no problem with you not liking them. And if Hallowed Be Thy Name isn't doin' it for you then my guess is that nothing will.

ROUND 2 RESULTS
Scorpion - Amon Amarth - Embrace Of The Endless Ocean - 8 points
I'm pretty sure this song wins the "coolest song title" for this round. Unfortunately that award doesn't actually exist. Alas. Regardless, this is a fantastic song. Perhaps it's because I already know the song is nautically themed, but a lot of the thundering riffs remind of the raging ocean. Also, you were right about the lyrics, they're really fantastic. Harsh vocals are usually used in an angry sort of context, but I always find it interesting when people manage to utilize them for different purposes, like here, where they instead sound mournful in a way. Good submission.
Sacul - Infected Mushroom - Becoming Insane - 9 points
Holy crap man. Holy crap. It's like you're in my head. This song was basically written for me. Weird, trance-style stuff with Latin guitar randomly interspersed? Incredible. This song probably had me banging my head more than any other this round, and it's just so darn fun to listen to. The vocals I really liked as well; as odd as they were, they really fit the song. :lol
adace - Mono (Japan) - Dream Odyssey - 10 points
I'm a fan of post-rock, though I'm not familiar with many bands in the genre other than the obvious ones (I'm assuming this is considered post-rock). I don't know that I've ever heard of this band before, and certainly that is my loss. This song is incredible. It's a beautiful, slow-building masterpiece. Also, the video really suits the song well, as it does give that feeling of drifting away in space. The climax of the song is pretty much the greatest thing ever. So yeah, I liked it. :lol
Nekov - Pagan’s Mind - God’s Equation - 6 points
This is some pretty good prog metal. The riffs are good, the drums are good, and the song’s perfectly good, but I suppose I’ve heard too much prog metal for a band to impress me without having something really unique about them. The singer is really good, though, I really enjoyed both his performance and the melodies.
senecadawg2 - Kayo Dot - The Manifold Curiosity - 8 points
Yeah, this one’s definitely more to my taste. I think I listened to Choirs Of The Eye once, but I don’t really remember it, so I figured this was all right. The song is definitely strange, but I expected that considering that it came from Toby Driver. I’ve heard Kayo Dot described as sort of “maudlin without the metal”, and this song seems to back that up. I really love the saxophone/clarinet/whatever it is bits as well. I actually really don’t know what to say about this one except that I really liked it. :lol
bl5150 - Joe Satriani - The Forgotten (Part Two) - 7 points
I’ve never checked out any of Joe’s stuff, because I usually expect guitar albums to be the typical “guitar hero” kind of stuff. I suppose there’s a bit of that here, but he mostly seems focused with great sound and melody rather than just showing off. I do tend to prefer instrumental that more “composed”, rather than just a backing band with the guitarist soloing, but this was honestly quite good, and definitely exceeded my expectations.
Lucien - The Enid - Tripping The Light Fantastic - 7 points
I’ve never done drugs, but somehow I think if I did, this is what it would be like. :lol This is definitely unique, I’ve never really heard anything quite like it. I really enjoy all the different sounds and instruments used (or maybe it’s just a synthesizer? I can’t tell). I guess my only problem with the song is that I don’t imagine I’d always be in the mood to listen to this kind of thing.
LieLowTheWantedMan - Massive Attack - Teardrop - 8 points
Oddly enough, I thought I’d heard this song before, since a bit of it is ostensibly used as the theme song on the show House. As it turns out, however, due to some copyright thing, the song they play on Netflix is something different, so I actually haven’t heard any of this one before. :lol I really liked the song. I’ve being more into trip-hop and related stuff lately, so this was right up my alley. I don’t really have much else to say here, but good choice.
Bolsters - The Naked And Famous - I Kill Giants - 8 points
This one isn’t quite as good as your last submission, but that’s ok since expectations were impossibly high. :lol I really enjoyed this song. I love the singer’s voice, and the whole thing has a great, dreamy sort of atmosphere about it. I’m not really sure what’s going on in the video :lol but it was still enjoyable to watch. Great submission.
Onno - Shining - Fish Eye - 8 points
I’ve heard a bit of Shining, but I’ve never heard this particular song. The first thing I noticed the drum sound, which is huge and fantastic. Then the song turns into… I have no idea what, but it’s amazing. The band is like a black metal/jazz/electronic/experimental something or other, and it’s fantastic. :lol I especially love the unusual-ness of the vocals. Excellent submission.

ROUND 3 RESULTS
Scorpion - Nevermore - Born - 8 points
I believe I've heard two Nevermore songs before, one that I quite liked and another that didn't really do much for me. Initially, this one felt like it was right in between, with some parts I liked and some parts that I didn't. The vocal style during the verses kind of put me off initially, though the chorus was pretty much the greatest thing ever. The more I listened to the song, though, the vocals started to grow on me a bit. I read somewhere that Warrel Dane was once trained as an opera singer? I can definitely hear some of that in his voice. Also, you seem to be stuck at 8 points. Sorry about that. :lol I swear it's not intentional.
Sacul - Burial - Raver - 5 points
I feel the same way about this song as I do about most dubstep, in that it feels very incomplete. The song starts with some cool beats and interesting ideas, but instead of developing them, the song seems to just repeat them randomly until it ends. Maybe I'm just missing the point of the song, but there's definitely something being missed by someone here. It wasn't horrible, but it really does nothing to change my general view in dubstep, which kind of disappoints me, actually.
adace - Hammock - Breathturn - 8 points
This song is quote beautiful and calming. I really like the vocals, they sound sort of synthetic in a cool way. I don't really have much else to say on this one.
Nekov - Pure Reason Revolution - Bullits Dominae - 8 points
I've been meaning to check this band out for a while, but just never got around to it. I will probably get on that more promptly now, as I really enjoyed this song. I'm actually not even sure what kind of music this is, but I really like it.
senecadawg - Dornenreich - Eigenwach - 7 points
This is.... pretty strange. :lol The vocals were definitely a turn off the first time I listened, but their bizarreness has really grown on me since then. I really like the short break in the middle with the violin. I do wish the production were a bit better, though. I realize that's sort of a thing with black metal, but it sounds a bit mushy.
bl5150 - Vanden Plas - Rainmaker - 6 points
I actually am familiar with Vanden Plas, but I've never heard this song, so no harm done. Unfortunately, while the song is performed perfectly well, there's very little to separate it from most other Dream Theater-esque prog bands out there. I do really enjoy Andy's voice though, which brings up my opinion of the song.
Lucien - Pendragon - Indigo - 7 points
This is sort of an odd one. I'm not a big fan of the singer's voice, and around half of the melodies do nothing for me, but the instrumental sections of the song are absolutely amazing. The guitar work is particularly fantastic. Even with my lukewarm thoughts on the vocalist, the instrumentals are good enough to interest my in checking out the band's work further.
LieLowTheWantedMan - The Drones - I See Seaweed - 9 points
I remember checking out this album a while back, based on the recommendation from crazyaga's thread (miss that dude, btw). I actually really disliked it then, the vocals were just not to my taste at all, despite me really wanting to like them. Oddly enough, however, when I listened to it again for this round, I found myself really liking the vox, and then liking them even more with each successive listen. They're definitely still strange, but it's strangeness that I like now. Good choice. :D
Bolsters - Hybrid - Break My Soul - 8 points
I don't think I've ever heard anything quite like this before. I'm actually not sure what it even is. But whatever it is, I really like it. The singer has a great voice.
Onno - Destrage - Destroy Create Transform Sublimate - 9 points
Whoa this is awesome. Awesome riffs, and drums, ridiculously awesome vocals, and I really never have any idea where the song is going. This is just plain fun. And then for the last for seconds, the song goes into a ridiculous trance/dubstep/electro freakout thing which makes the song even more awesome. Definitely going to check them out further.

Bolsters - Hybrid - Break My Soul - 8 points
I don't think I've ever heard anything quite like this before. I'm actually not sure what it even is. But whatever it is, I really like it. The singer has a great voice.
I don't listen to all that much electronic music, so I kind of suck at guessing electronic subgenre labels (there's a lot of them and often very little separating them :lol), but I am pretty sure this is Big Beat. However, this song (and the whole album) is fairly unique compared to all the other Big Beat stuff I've heard - this is much more melodic, slightly progressive, they have a good singer who sings on almost all of the songs, there's variety in the dynamics, and unlike most other electronic artists all of the symphonic elements on this album were recorded live in the studio - no samples here, which I think helps to give the album a more organic sound.
Round 4 dispatched.

I'd say it falls under prog metal but as you listen to more of them you'll see they're not your average band ;)

Bit of a heads up, the internet here has been offensively abysmal, and I haven't been able to listen much. Hopefully that will improve soon, and thus we will see results before the end of the world.

Well, he doesn't have to listen to all the songs. :P
But seriously, I wouldn't be surprised. The internet is so horrific here, after a rain shower it dies completely, then routinely craps out or runs at the pace of sloth wading through molasses for the next few days.
It is truly awful. But things seem to be running better now, results should be up sometime tomorrow.

ROUND 4 RESULTS
Scorpion - Dark Empire - The Forgotten Sin - 8 points
Whoa Scorp got 8 points never saw that coming
Seriously though, I'm not doing this on purpose. :lol As I said before, the vocalist is my favorite part of the song. His growls and cleans are great (though he doesn't do much growling in this song, shame about that), plus he can do a clean-but-metal voice that a lot of mixed vocalists don't seem to do. The song has a fair bit of prog to it, but never to where it seems slef-indulgent, excepting the one widdly section near the end, which I didn't really care for. Other than that, though, this song was great.
Sacul - Nils Frahm - Toilet Brushes-More - 8 points
Dude, where do you even find stuff like this? :lol This is pretty amazing stuff. Unconventional stuff like this can be really great if done right, as is exemplified by this song. I don't know exactly what it is, if it's the way things are mic'd, but I really love the huge, reverberating sound the piano has. The only real complaint I have with this one is that it does seem very long, considering the song doesn't change too much. But it's a rather minor complaint, all things considered.
adace - Isis - Ghost Key - 8 points
I've been meaning to check out Isis for a while now, but just haven't gotten around to it. I guess this is considered "post-metal"? Lots of it are definitely similar to what a post rock band would sound like if they played metal. I especially love the vocalist, his cleans are really good, plus his growls are amazing and really unique. I don't think I've really heard that style before. All in all, good submission.
Nekov - Arena - Cutting The Cards - 8 points
OK, at some point someone's going to get something other than 8 points. But not yet, apparently. Of all the songs sent, this one probably grew on me the most. Initially, I really didn't like the vocals at all. Later on, somewhat inexplicably, I decided they were amazing and really enjoyed them. Not really sure how it happened, but I'm glad it did. The guitar work is really cool as well, is that John Mitchell (of Frost*)? I know he came from some English prog band, but I can't remember which one.
Also, if I awarded extra points for coolest album cover, this one would have gotten it.
senecadawg2 - David Gray - Please Forgive Me - 10 points
These are the droids you were looking for. This was my favorite song sent this round. I've heard of David Gray before, as you've expressed your love of his music several times on this forum, but somehow or another, I never got around to listening to him. I was actually expecting his music to be more "singer/songwriter acoustic-guitar-with-singing" kind of thing, and though I wouldn't have minded that, I definitely like this more. I guess I can see how his voice might be an acquired taste? But I really enjoyed it right off, so good choice with this one.
bl5150 - After Forever - Cry With A Smile - 8 points
I've tried listening to After Forever before, but generally it didn't stick because, beyond Floor being awesome, the music didn't interest me much. I suppose that's true to extent for this song as well, but for one thing, Floor is even more incredibly awesome than usual here, plus the acoustic guitar bits are really nice as well. The synth parts are nice, though I can't help thinking a band with Joost van der Broek as keyboardist ought to utilize him more (I'm assuming that's him? I know he played with them at some point). Anyway, overall I really liked this song.
Lucien - Alexander Borodin - Polovetsian Dances - 7 points
This piece is nice enough to listen to, but the beginning of it does illustrate the problems I have with a lot of classical music, in that a lot of the time it seems a bit too... sedate? I'm not entirely sure if that's the right word. It does pick up a few minutes in, though, and I enjoy the song a lot more then. It's possible my issues with the song stem mostly from unfamiliarity with the style of music.
If I awarded extra points for "composer with the best mustache" this one would have won.
LieLowTheWantedMan - Low - Words - 8 points
This does remind a quite a bit of RHP, especially the guitar sound. I really love this sort of downbeat music. I actually don't have that much to say on this one, I just really enjoyed it. Good choice.
Bolsters - BT - Suddenly - 9 points
I'm passingly familiar with BT (I actually sent one of their songs in Lucien's roulette), but I'd never heard this song before. And as it turns out, this song is amazing. The chorus is basically the best thing ever. Probably the only thing keeping this from being a 10 is that I think the song goes on just a bit too long, but in the grand scheme, that's a minor complaint.
Onno - Rachmaninoff - Piano Concerto No. 2 Op. 18 - 7 points
You said you were taking a risk, and I suppose it didn't entirely pay off. Hopefully that doesn't discourage you from taking risks in the future, though, because a lot of times I end up liking things I wouldn't have expected to like. This piece is actually quite good, I just find that with a lot of classical music, this included, there are a few amazing sections, and the rest is just good or ok. The pianist was particularly impressive, though.

ROUND 5 RESULTS
Scorpion - Shpongle - Star Shpongled Banner - 7 points
Well, you finally got something other than an 8! :neverusethis: This song is pretty strange. I particularly like the Eastern-sounding instrument that's somewhere between a saxophone and a cat on drugs. Speaking of drugs, I imagine doing some sort of hallucinogen would be comparable to listening to this song (this is not a criticism, btw, I like that stuff :P ). Overall, I like the song, but it does feel a bit rambly and incomplete. Or maybe that's the point? I'm not sure.
It should be noted that this song won the "Motherfucking Best Song Title Ever" award, though unfortunately this award comes with no prize and is basically bullshit.
Sacul - 5inapsi5 - Summer's End - 7 points
This is a pretty interesting piece. The piano section that opens the song is quite nice, and is probably my favorite part of the song. The following guitar-driven section I like a bit less, but it's still pretty good. All told, I do think the song goes on a bit longer that is justified, though.
adace - Accept - Stampede - 8 points
You know, I really should be more familiar with Accept. I heard Teutonic Terror when it came out, though "Whoa, this rocks!", heard Stalingrad (the single) and thought the same, yet somehow never listened to anything beyond that. This song didn't make quite as much of an impression as the other two I mentioned. For about the first two minutes, up until the chorus, the song just seems kind of average, though fortunately it picks up quite a bit after that. Overall, I really liked it. Maybe I'll actually get around to buying one of their albums. :P
Nekov - Von Hertzen Brothers - Insomniac - 9 points
This was my favorite song sent this round. The vocals are good, the song is well written, the chorus is great, basically everything is great. Good choice.
senecadawg2 - Clint Mansell - Death Is the Road to Awe - 8 points
This song was really great. It does take a while to get going, but I suppose that's the entire point of it. It sounds very cinematic, I'm assuming it's part a score? I'm definitely interested in hearing more of his work.
bl5150 - Enuff Z'nuff - 6 points
This song is all right, but it doesn't really do anything to interest me or make me want to relisten.
Lucien - Lucien - Seismic Disorder - 7 points
I actually quite liked this piece. The sections are distinct, but still definitely parts of the whole. The song does seem a bit long, though, and some parts don't hold my attention as well as others. Still, a good submission.
LieLowTheWantedMan - Unexpect - Desert Urbania - 7 points
This is a strange one. Not saying the song's strange (though it certainly is), but rather that it's strange I don't like this song more than I do. The respective parts, and all the vocalists are great, but the whole thing feels just a bit too schizophrenic. I get that that's their thing, and it didn't bother me on some of the other songs I've heard from them, but it just didn't click with me here. Not to say I didn't like it, because I did, I just would have expected to like it more, as this is pretty much a textbook example of the kind of music I like. Can't win 'em all, I suppose.
Bolsters - Afro Celt Sound System - Deep Channel - 8 points
I'm not really sure what kind of music this is, but the beginning is quite ethereal and very nice to listen to, and the second, more upbeat part is really great too. Not a whole lot to say here, good choice.
Onno - Chopin - Waltz No. 1 in E flat major, Op. 18 "Grande valse brilliante' - 8 points
The names on these classical pieces are really killing me. :lol This is probably my favorite classical song I've received so far. I have a bit of a soft spot for solo piano pieces, and the constantly changing tempo keeps the piece interesting all the way through.

ROUND 6 RESULTS
Scorpion - Kalmah - The Trapper - 9 points
Dude, this crap is amazing. It started out good, but when the vocals came in, holy crap. That's one of the best growls I've ever heard. I think you've shown me some Kalmah stuff before, but this is definitely the best thing I've heard from them so far. Excellent submission.
Sacul - Ruined Machines - Karma In Remission - 7 points
I wasn't too crazy about this one the first time I listened to it, but it's grown on me a bit since then. It's a pretty unique sound they have, plus Ruined Machines is an awesome band name. The song does really feel like it could use vocals, though. I don't normally feel that way about instrumentals, but for some reason this one came across that way to me. Still enjoyable, though.
adace - Sigur Ros - Svefn-g-englar - 7 points
adace originally sent Varúð, but that's one of the only Sigur Ros songs I heard actually already heard, so he sent this one instead. I don't like this one quite as much as Varúð, though. The song starts out well enough, and is quite beautiful, but the part where Jonsi sings "it's you" (that's probably not actually what he's saying, that's just what it sounds like) really grates on me for some reason. It's not enough to ruin the song, but it does hamper my enjoyment of it somewhat.
Nekov - Aghora - Mind's Reality - 8 points
It's odd that I haven't heard this before, Sean Malone being almost my favorite bassist (number 2, for anyone who's curious (i.e. nobody)). It's a sort of odd combination, the sort of tech music they play along with the female vocalist, but it actually works out surprisingly well.
senecadawg2 - Ne Obliviscaris - Forget Me Not - 8 points
Violin, man. Violin as an integral part of a black/power/progressive/whatever band. Why has no one done this before? They should have. I've been meaning to check out this band forever, but (once again) never got around to it. I suppose the only complaint would be that the song's quite long, but even that's a pretty minor issue.
Also, awesome album art.
bl5150 - Freak Kitchen - Jerk - 7 points
Yeah, the lyrics to this one are pretty hilarious. The song's pretty cool, and the band have a pretty interesting sound. Overall, I enjoyed the song, but it does seem to lack something to push it to the "next level", whatever the heck that means.
Lucien - Mad King Corduroy - Reflections - 6 points
This one starts out with some really cool, spacey synth sounds, and it's quite atmospheric, but unfortunately the song never seems to go anywhere else. It's pretty relaxing to listen to, but it's not really the kind of thing I imagine I'll go back to.
LieLowTheWantedMan - Sigh - The Transfiguration Fear - 8 points
I've heard some Sigh before and enjoyed it, and this song was no exception. The chorus-ish thing with the choir of weird voices is fantastic, and mixed with the insanity of the rest of the song, it's quite an experience. The saxophone solo is the best part though, as all good saxophone solos are the best part of their respective songs.
Bolsters - Mree - Into The Well - 8 points
This is a really beautiful song. Not much to say here, I really enjoyed it.
Onno - Dave Brubeck Quartet - Take Five - 8 points
I actually really enjoy jazz whenever I hear it, for some reason though, I hardly ever seek it out on my own. Anyway, I really enjoyed this piece. It was very laid-back, but the musicians still managed to impress me, especially the drummer. Mostly because I really love jazz drummers. Anyway, great submission.

ROUND 7 RESULTS
Scorpion - Flaming Row - Rage Of Despair - 8 points
This band has been on my check out list for a while now (I think you've recommended them on several occasions, and I think jingle.boy recommended this exact song at one point), but like many others, never quite got around to it. My mistake, as it seems this is rather great. I can't pin down exactly how many vocalists there are in this song (4? 5? 100?! ), but they're all great. The harsh vocalist is my favorite, though. The guitar work is quite nice as well, especially the opening riff.
Sacul - Last Crack - Energy Mind - 7 points
This is kind of different. The song's quite good (I particularly enjoy the vocalist), but it does seem to lack something to push it to the next level. I still enjoyed it a fair bit, though.
adace - Lantlos - Melting Sun I: Azure Chimes - 8 points
I was sold on this by the first note. The song feels very post rock-ish, so I was a bit surprised when the vocals showed up, as I expected the song to be instrumental. As it turns out, though, the vocals were quite good, and I liked the way they sorted of melded with the music instead of sitting out front.
Nekov - Yargos - Peace Of Mind - 9 points
As soon as I saw Andrew MacDermott's name, I knew this was going to be great. Vocals are great, chorus is ridiculously catchy, and the solos are awesome. Great submission.
senecadawg2 - Headspace - Daddy Fucking Loves You - 8 points
I'm honestly at a loss to explain why I don't own this album. I was interested to hear how Damian sounds as the sole vocalist, as I've only heard him before in co-vocalists roles. As it turns out, he's awesome. His light, lullaby like delivery at the beginning is incredible, and he actually really suits the heavier sections as well. Overall, excellent song.
bl5150 - DC Cooper - The Union - 7 points
I think the only time I've heard DC Cooper before was on his guest appearance on one of Voyager's songs. I really like his voice though, and he sounds great on this song. The guitar work is great as well, although the song does feel like it goes on a bit too long.
Lucien - Final Fantasy XII - The Dalmasca Estersand - 7 points
This reminds me a bit of some of the music from Fire Emblem. Although, maybe it just reminds me of Japanese RPG soundtracks? I don't know, I'm not overly familiar with the style. Still, I quite enjoyed it.
LieLowTheWantedMan - Cardiacs - Tarred And Feathered - 8 points

Bolsters - Kishi Bashi - The Ballad of Mr. Steak - 9 points
This is amazing. Every time I've listened to it, it vaguely reminds of something that I can't quite place. Another thing I can't place is exactly what kind of music this is, but I ought to listen to more of it.
Onno - Ludovico Einaudi - I Giorni - 8 points

WHOA RESULTS NO WAY
here we go

Scorpion - The Human Abstract - Patterns - 9 points
It seems like a lot of times, bands with both harsh and clean vocals tend to be weaker on the clean side, which makes it all the better when you come across one that excels in both. (i.e. this one) The guitar work, the melodies, the lyrics and especially the vocals are all excellent. I'm adding this band to the "check-out" list. (though they may already be there. I have a hard time keeping track of things :P )
Sacul - Saviour Machine - Carnival Of Souls - 9 points
I've known of this group for a while, and tried checking them out a few times after hearing their vocalist on THE, but none of the songs really did much for me. I'm not sure if it's a consequence of my tastes evolving, or just that I listened to the wrong songs, but I really enjoyed this one. The song has a really great, "open" sort of feel to it, and Clayton's vocals are fantastic. Thanks for this, I may actually be able to get into the band now.
adace - My Bloody Valentine - Sometimes - 8 points
For some reason this band and Bullet For My Valentine have always been the same in my head, which I guess is why I never checked them out (I guess it's because both have "valentine" in the band name? Who knows. My mind is a weird place). I guess this is shoegaze? I'm not super familiar with the genre, but it sounds that way to me. Actually, more than anything it reminds me of what the Red House Painters would sound like with more distortion. Overall, great song.
Nekov - Beardfish - Green Waves - 8 points
For some reason, the first few times I listened to this, I didn't really like it at all. Fortunately, it's grown on me. Musically, it's pretty good, if not particularly exceptional (not necessarily a complaint, not everything has to be), but my favorite part is the vocalist. He's got a great voice, and seems really versatile. I guess my only complaint is it seems a bit too long? Not that big of a problem, though.
senecadawg2 - Gallowbraid - Stone Of Remembrance - 9 points
So, first thoughts, this reminds me a lot of Caladan Brood. Caladan Brood is extremely awesome, so this is a good thing. The black metal vocals are awesome, the clean vocals are awesome, the Irish-sounding section is awesome, basically everything is awesome. This is a terrible writeup, but who cares. This rocks. :metal
bl5150 - Thank You Scientist - Suspicious Waveforms - 8 points
Nah, you'll have to send something a lot weirder to freak me out. :D This was pretty awesome, though. When it started, I expected it be a kind of jazz thing, and I guess it kind of retained a jazzy sort of feel throughout, but it definitely had a lot of more "out there" stuff with the violin and the other instruments. I've actually never heard anything quite like this, I'll certainly be checking out more of their stuff.
Lucien - Lucien - The Scaly Wings of Lightning - 5 points
Can't say I enjoyed this one as much as your other piece. I think I get what you were going for with it, but overall it just didn't really work for me.
LieLowTheWantedMan - Fire! Orchestra - Exit! Part One - 7 points
Holy crap. :lol Where do you even find stuff like this? It's so bizarre. It's also pretty enjoyable to listen to, with all the strange vocals and random squawking instruments. Though I suppose I'd have to be in a certain mood to want to listen to it.
Bolsters - Celldweller - Birthright - 10 points
I'm considering hiring you to just send me music constantly. Of course, it wouldn't work because I have no money. :(
But anyway, about the song. :lol This is ridiculously amazing. From the incredible synth-y bassline to the vocals to the electro-dubstep-whatever elements, this is just plain amazing all the way through.
Onno - Tchaikovsky - 1812 Overture - 8 points
So this song has cannons. That pretty much ensured it a good score. :lol Seriously, though, I really liked this piece. I've never heard it in full before, but I've some of the themes in various contexts in the past (I think we might have played a bit of it in band once? I can't really remember. Anyway...). I don't really have a whole lot to say because I'm writing this at 1 in the morning and my brain isn't working that well, but I really liked it. Good choice.

Pretty much every song you sent was a home run, and almost every group is probably going to warrant further investigation on my part. So, thanks for playing!
And everyone else, thanks for playing as well. All of you sent me some great music, and I really appreciate it. I had a lot of fun running this, and hopefully you guys enjoyed participating. See you guys whenever I do this again (probably this time next year :P ).
THANKS AGAIN EVERYBODY!!!!

Haha............and he rockets out of last place for the first time in the final round. :metal And I had to send the weirdest stuff in my collection to do it. :hat
Well done on your roulette - I was like a fish out of water in the music dept for the most part but had a good time anyway.

Awh I thought I'd score higher with that one, but oh well. Glad I got to show you more weird shit. :tup

It's certainly a song that I could see growing on me more in the future. I suppose one of the problems with roulettes is a lot of the songs that would ostensibly be "growers" often just don't have the time to grow.
Glad you liked that one! Thanks for me having me in your roulette. I'll definitely sign up for your next one if you decide to have it.
Congrats Bolsters :tup
Thanks for running this roulette SN, it was fun
You're welcome!
I will try harder next time, but anyways, this was a fun roulette. Well done Bolsters :tup
Trying is overrated. This thing is mostly a crapshoot anyway. I figure the best way to go is just send stuff you like and hope for the best.
