30 years old, and still fresh and crisp, not a sign of wear and tear so many comedies from the 80s show.

To this day I have never seen Ghostbusters 2.

Given your age, I am not surprised.  It seems like a lot of younger people do not "get" a lot of 80s movies, and by 80s movies, I mean "80s movies."  I've seen some younger folks talk like Fast Times at Ridgemont High was the most boring movie ever, and I am always like :eek :eek :eek :eek.  Some movies just have that "you had to be there" thing going on.  I don't think Ghostbusters is the funniest film ever, like some do, but it's still pretty freaking hilarious, and seeing it in the theater back in 1984, at the age of 10, was pretty damn amazing.

I don't like when obese people get cast as "obese person" and the whole film is them being "obese person who makes fun of the fact they're obese" .

Every scene is like  - here's a situation and something funny happens because fat.

Moneymaking 101. Just look at Jurassic World last year.

I don't think making reboots or remakes (or late sequels) are a bad idea, it all comes down to the people behind it, their motivation and their execution. It's all about how you do something, and sometimes they manage to make a good movie out of it, and if they don't, you still have the original. The problem with this one, at least judging by the trailer is that it's all things you recognize combined with the lowest form of comedy ever put to film. Even though they toned down Melissa Mccarthy, they still managed to get the stereotypes with the worst being a loud black woman who is yelling for half of the trailer.
Title: Re: Happy 30th Anniversary, Ghostbusters!
Post by: Cool Chris on March 07, 2016, 12:39:21 PM
The issue I have with most reboots/remakes is that they are usually just gravytraining on the name of the original. If this new Ghostbusters moving came out, without the precedent, and the name, of the original, it would look like a generic, all-girl cast buddy movie, with Melissa McCarthy doing her shtick, Kristen Wiig doing... whatever people find entertaining about her, and a few gags that we've seen over a dozen times. Look at the first 30 seconds of the  trailer. All is it is call-backs to the original. But attach the Ghostbusters name and franchise to it, and it becomes one of the most anticipated movies of the year, and an automatic hit at the summer box office.

Quite. Which is why they're doing this instead of writing their own movie with the same cast and crew. It'll make some money on brand recognition alone.

I think Star Trek 2009 tried to do something different with it and even wrote the script around being able to take it in a new direction. . . Which is what makes Into Darkness all the more confusing.

If Paramount hires you to do a new Star Trek movie - do you turn it down because you think there's been enough Star Trek movies already or do you accept it because you think you could do something

new with it ? I think 2009 managed that.
Title: Re: Happy 30th Anniversary, Ghostbusters!

I agree with you on Star Trek Into Darkness. The prior movie did a great job of setting up and re-establishing the characters, that ID just felt like a step backwards into fan-service territory.

That's why I'm glad that the next Star Wars will be taken on by a different director. I think JJ Abrams' strengths are in the initial set up of the show/movie, but it's better when he then takes a step back.

On Ghostbusters, there's just no reason for this movie to be remade, other than cold hard cash. Similar with the new Point Break, Vacation, Total Recall, ... (Insert 80s / 90s movie du jour here). The originals were definitely 'of their time', and should just be left alone. :)

Well, the trailer kind of leads you to believe that is a sequel/follow-up to the original.  However, the director has vehemently denied this, and says it is a complete reboot and the originals never happened in this "universe".

So, whatever.

He's fucking with us.  He wants to create confusion about the whole thing (is it a reboot, a remake, a sequel, or something else?) to try and get more people to go see it.  He's hoping that at least some people who might not have checked it out will at least see it out of curiosity, to find out what the deal is.

I'll still wait until it shows up on cable, and I'd still need to be pretty wasted to even bother.

So the idiots crying "sexism" just wont consider the possibility that maybe, just maybe all the hate and general dislike might be because the movie just looks terrible? I generally don't find female comedians to be funny at all, and based on the trailer, it's still true. That being said, if the cast was replaced with men, it still wouldn't be funny. As someone said, this looks like one of those shitty spoof movies ala Epic Movie. And yeah, screaming isn't funny. The movie just looks cliched as fuck, and it might as well have been written by Adam Sandler.

Why is it that some people pull a Belushi and say they don't find female comedians funny?

Is it basically the South Park queef episode? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEl0XlbEbW8)

Because some people don't find female comedians funny.

Ellen can be funny on her show, but any stand up I've ever seen from a woman was terrible.

The clip I saw of Tammy just reeked of both shouty comic who thinks shouting is funny AND "i'm fat so every joke is about how fat I am "..

That's all they have.

To me, she's a 'big girl" cliche like Rebel Wilson. That's what I got from the Pitch Perfect trailers. According to my brother, Wilson has more to offer in those movies, but that's just what I see. I'm not knocking over weight people. Chris Farley was pretty entertaining, even though he was the shouty fat guy. Some people have it, some don't. It doesn't matter what gender, but typically, I just don't find female comedians funny. More so with stand up. They can be funny in sitcoms, but there hasn't been a decent sitcom in decades.

I get the lame calls of sexism, but .....

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is extremely funny in Veep (among other shows)
Jane Lynch is hit and miss (for me), but quite a few people find her top notch funny.
Tina Fey was funny in 30 Rock
Amy Poehler was funny in Parks and Rec (along with the other females of that show)
Madeline Kahn was great in her Mel Brooks' movies - History of the World / Blazing Saddles
Tamsin Greig cracks me up in Showtime's Episodes

I liked Dreyfus on Seinfeld.
Jane Lynch is amusing in the "stoner comedies", but not LOL funny.
Tina Fey and Amy poehler are overrated as fuck. Fey is likable, but Poehler is abysmal.

I'll add Amy Schumer. She's fucking awful as well. John Cena is funnier than she is.

I find Schumer horrible as well.  And many female comedians are crap.  As are most male comedians.

And I absolutely love comedies.  As much as I love deep dramas or sci/fi or .... comedies really are my fave form of entertainment.  Good comedy puts you in a great frame of mind.

Hot Rod was okay. Samberg was actually pretty endearing and it's always nice to see Ian McShane. The falling down the hill scene was great, but a lot of the rest of the movie just fell really flat for me.

I love comedies, I, fortunately, find a lot of movies funny enough.

Though I think the last movie I laughed at intensely was Deadpool. I did NOT expect to laugh at all, yet god damn that was a funny movie.

Yeah I agree. It feels like all she ever does is being clumsy and falling down a lot. And yelling hysterically. There's nothing subtle or clever about her comedy in any of the films I've seen her in. But judging by the trailer, they took all her traits and gave to Leslie Jones instead. She is the clumsy and loud one, because every comedy needs THAT character. Urgh.

The beauty of the original Ghostbusters is that they guys were 100% serious, and to a great extent actually knew what they were doing.  The humor came from the ridiculous situations they found themselves in, how they reacted (which was still in character, no schtick (well maybe Bill Murray a bit)), and the results.  It wasn't because they were "being funny".  You can't just assemble a bunch of comedians, throw together a script, and expect the results to be funny.

That is such a great point. They didn't play it like a comedy. There was no need to. The comedy was built in to the script. The actors were the fulcrum, not the level. The more obvious example is Airplane! Everyone played that movie like it was a serious situation where a plane could crash and hundreds of people could die. That made the humor all the more hilarious.

I saw a video where Max Landis made that point. He also brought up a film like Kingsman, which similar to the original Ghostbusters wasn't a comedy, but had comedy in it. Where Kingsman was a spy movie that happened to have a lot of comedy in it, Ghostbusters was more of a catastrophe/supernatural movie that happened to have jokes. Compare that to the new Ghostbusters which looks like it's a straight up comedy.

The best analogy I've seen so far is that the new Ghostbusters looks like an SnL skit.

The new movie looks like the same comedy people palling around trying to be funny, which just happens to be within the situation of a world with ghosts. The Ghostbusters part almost looks like an afterthought to make money for a weak comedy movie.

I'm really glad you put the Bill Murray exception in.  Because that is the essence of a successful comedy ensemble.

Seinfeld, while funny, was nothing compared to Cosmo or George.  And if he were, the show wouldn't have worked.  There have to be some people that are playing it straight (but still funny) to make the goofball funny as opposed to just annoying.
Title: Re: Happy 30th Anniversary, Ghostbusters!

True.  Otherwise there's no contrast, and the root of comedy is in contradictions.  What we see versus what we expect, how people act versus how they should act, etc.

I liked Kingsman, and part of it was because it occassionally went over the top and me go "what the fuck!" but in a good way.  It was straight enough to take seriously, but had satirical elements to it.  Some said that the results were inconsistent and left them not knowing whether it was supposed to be serious, comedy, satire, or what.  If the movie is well made, that almost doesn't matter.  Just enjoy the ride, and I did.

The original Ghostbusters were scientists, guys with PhDs and the like.  Ackroyd explains how the storage containment system works with enough detail for us to take it seriously, and know that it would be a very bad idea to just shut it down.  That would be like opening all the cages at the zoo.  "Don't cross the streams" and stuff is rooted in science.  Science that's all made up, of course, but it sounds plausible and works within the film.

Ultimately, the best comedy IMO has enough "serious" in it to ground you, so the ridiculous stuff stands out and is funny.  With SNL skits (good analogy, by the way), it's satire to begin with.  When it's funny, it's funny because it's making fun of the real thing.  How can anyone take the Ghostbusters remake seriously when it doesn't even appear to take itself seriously?

Rant time! I'm going to expand on my previous comment about Ghostbusters looking awful. I was willing to look at this film and try to watch it as its own movie, rather than a successor of two other greats. Then I saw the trailer.
I can already see (I think) what this movie's problems will be. It's too forced. Everything in the original was funny because all the dialogue and situations were a result of normal people being placed in paranormal scenarios. Venkman's dialogue felt like something a sarcastic ass would really say. Stantz was written well as a naive and overenthusiastic Ghostbuster with heart. Spengler was a great nerd and Zeddemore was your every-man.
I think that will be the biggest difference between the movies. The original had characters; this one has caricatures.

Okay, now that we've established that the Ghostbusters remake looks awful for completely non-sexist reasons, I'll go ahead and give my 100% sexist reason for not wanting to watch it.  Kristen Wiig is alright, but other than her, I don't find any of the other leads even remotely attractive.  Kate McKinnon is okay I guess.  But like it or not, there is a double standard.  I don't care how attractive or unattractive a male star is, because I'm not attracted to guys.  Unless they're so godforsaken ugly that it's distracting, I don't care.  What matters is that they can act and portray a believeable character.

With female stars, whether or not I'm going to sit and watch them for two hours will depend at least in part on whether or not I find them attractive.  If they're alright, we'll probably be fine, as long as they can act and the movie isn't complete shit.  But if the movie isn't great and/or the acting is crap, then I'm out of reasons for watching a movie with females in it that I don't even think are hot.

But the only victim there would be male actors  :xbones  If movie is bad, then stop watching, unless perv gene *rises*.

It isn't sexist.  A clear memory for me is watching the Kevin Costner Robin Hood movie.  There was a group of young girls about two rows in front of us and every time Christian Slater came on screen, they screamed in ecstasy and even made motions with their hands (a silhouette or Mystery Science Theater 3000 version for me) to grab and hug the image on screen.

To kind of expand on what Orbert said, I don't tend to find female comediennes as funny as guys for the most part. I don't know why. I mean, even the attractive  ones. I can't explain it. They have to be really fucking clever for me to laugh. Now there are a couple of exceptions. If they were to make this movie with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, I'd probably find it funnier.

I think part of the issue is that movie studios today seem to want to pigeon hole movies for their target markets. This one is a horror/romcom/buddy comedy/action movie.

Someone made this point earlier. Movies like Ghostbusters, and some of the other movies of the time (Gremlins is another one), didn't fit nicely into one single genre. They successfully mixed together elements from different genres to great effect.

TLDR - movies today are too homogenised.  :P

Also, I read today that a lot of the dialogue in Ghostbusters was ad libbed on the spot, which was pretty cool. I'm guessing Bill Murray had a lot to do with that.

On the comedian thing (btw, do we say comedienne because I thought we were supposed to use the same description when it is gender is neutral to begin with).

Whitney Cummings (the creator of such high brow shows as Two Broke Girls) is the female equivalent to Andrew Dice Clay.  They both had some success.

But it could be brought up that Andrew Dice Clay was constantly *mobbed* for being a sexist.  We talk about Whitney Cummings being lowest common denominator humor, but has she ever been banned anywhere or even protested to any serious degree?

So there is a double standard, but not how it is presented.  What MetalJunkie is talking about is probably the simple ability to relate to comedy situations of men (that kinda happened to me once!!) and less so with the female comedian.  If it is simply that, that isn't really sexist.

BTW, how fun that everything always has to turn into a race/gender/orientation debate.  We will need a female critic to review this movie.  And a black female critic for the Leslie part of the review.  Otherwise intent is suspect.   ::)

I am not necessarily wishing this movie bombs, but from a creative standpoint, I kinda hope it does, if only to send the message to the execs that you can't just slap a franchise name on a new film and expect to rake in the millions. Even though apparently you can.... so, never mind.

I'll wait for it on cable.  But I'm hearing that it's not as horrible as most people feared, and even a theory that all the "controversy" was just a strategy to hype what was shaping up to be a rather mediocre movie.

I enjoyed it! I think everything that led up to it was ridiculous and misogynistic. Paul Feig is a good, proven director. This movie was good and I think many fans of Ghostbusters will enjoy it.

No doubt there was some misogyny going on because people are stupid, but for me it just looked horrible. I've also seen some very mixed reviews, basically saying it wasn't as bad as the trailers made it look, but it still wasn't very good, and then you have Angry Joe who absolutely hated it. I'll catch it on Netflix or maybe not. I already spoiled it for myself.

Rebooting a loved movie is always going to get a lot of hate. Rebooting a loved movie and making huge changes to the main characters is going to get even more hate. Rebooting a loved movie and having it look like unfunny garbage that retains none of the charm or humour of the original is even worse.
The fact the main cast happens to be all women is being turned into a marketing gimmick, and is being used by some as a deflection for legitimate criticism aimed towards a movie that looks awful regardless of gender. I'm sure my response to the movie so far would have been the same even if the cast was all male. Ghostbusters didn't need to be remade.

This pretty much sums up exactly how I feel as well.

But I will go further and say it DOES bother me a bit that they cast all the leads as women.  But there is nothing misogynistic about that, and it isn't that I somehow think women can't be leads in movies.  That has nothing to do with it.  I would have the same reaction if, say, they did a Golden Girls remake with a bunch of old men.  What bothers me is drastically changing the nature of the core characters, and basically doing it as a marketing ploy, as Blob said.  Sorry, but it just doesn't sit right with me.  But then again, it all comes back to quality.  I suspect that, despite the initial reaction of disapproval of doing that the characters, I would get over it quickly if the movie actually looked good.  Problem is, it doesn't.

I agree with blob :hifive:

They could have made their own movie with the same cast ( not even Ghostbusters ). And nobody would have cared. But then they wouldn't have THRIVED on the publicity they got from it.

Also I wonder how many of those 4 star reviews are just awarding it so highly out of fear of being inundated with hate mail...
Not saying that's what's happened but you never know

And yes judging from all the clips - the acting is bad and the jokes are all very low brow.

I've certainly no problem with the idea. But they should have made their own film and not called sexism literally any time anyone said the FILM looks bad ( which it does ).

Our criticisms aren't warranted because we're just misogynistic sexist pigs.

Or Ghostbusters shouldn't look like the live action Scooby Doo movie.

And it should be funny.

I went and saw it yesterday. It was a great movie and laugh-out-loud funny! The best part was that they didn't try to remake the old movie or even the characters. Some of the ghosts were downright frightening which really added to the humor, I think. They went so over the top with gadgets and ghost combat that it was just the right amount of self deprecation. Probably the low point was Chris Hemsworth's character was a bit dull and some of the "he's so stupid but who cares" stuff got old, but really that's just niggling.

The Blu-ray for this movie will sit proudly next to my Blu-ray for the original.

I don't give a toss what some guys whose JOB it is to rip movies apart.....

I'm actually starting to get annoyed with Redlettermedia. Mike has just gone overboard with his dislike of anything that isn't schlock. I just can't take his opinion seriously anymore. If it's dumb and silly, he likes it. If it's not, he hates it. I'm starting to think his Star Wars reviews were just a fluke of brilliance.

Honestly, I'd much rather watch Rich and Jay do their thing. At least they seem mostly open minded and don't hate everything.

Oh yea, I still need to see that. I also tend to like those weird artsy movies that most people hate.

Anyway, not surprised they don't like this. Actually, maybe a little surprised Mike didn't since the movie came off as a "so bad it's good" thing. Which I guess it's not after all.

Honestly, I feel like the majority of the reviews have been "it's fine" which seems largely reactionary to how bad everyone thought it was going to be. So most people give it a C or so. I wonder if the movie didn't have all the bad predictions if they would like it less. It seems finding it okay is mostly because it's not as bad as they thought it'd be.

Jay is more analytical and less forgiving of big summer movie stupidity. He's a hipster and he likes indie movies and weird, dark stuff (see: Eraserhead) but I feel he's usually pretty good at articulating why he doesn't or does like something.

Rich is a giant fanboy nerd. He usually has insightful things to say but a lot of it is couched in outright nerdery. Like, a few times during the Ghostbser's review it almost felt like he was about to criticize the movie simply for not being the original rather than how it fails on its own merits.

Mike is a drunk who loves schlock. Honestly, given the fucking awful movies he's given semi-positive reviews to lately (Jurassic World, ID4:R), I was pretty surprised he didn't end up loving this one, but I think nostalgia and his attachment to the original allowed him to be a bit more... wary. I honestly don't get his taste anymore, I think he's just watched too much terrible cinema that the analytical part of his brain has rotted away and has been replaced by a hardened nugget of pure schlock.

I think they all often bring up interesting points about movies, but Mike is the one I trust the least out of the three.

That said, I have no desire to go to the theater and spend $12 to watch this. Maybe when it comes out on Netflix. Maybe.

Ghostbusters 2016 wasn't horrible. It had its amusing moments, but it seriously needed a rewrite. All the controversy surrounding it was stupid to begin with, but after actually watching the movie, one thing is clear: everyone got their panties in a wad about nothing. I wouldn't say this movie was a waste of time, and I don't regret watching it, but after all the chaos Ghostbusters 2016 brought forth, I wish I could have gotten something more out of it, good or bad. It's just kind of there.

I think, too, that people not wanting to see women in the part had more to do with the change in direction from the original. It wasn't so much a "women can't do it" thing, but a "why not just continue the original story" thing. If it was the same all girl cast, but they lived in the original's universe, most people wouldn't have had a problem with it. Tie in the original cast's cameos as former Ghostbusters; Venkman maybe hangs around the firehouse doing nothing poriductive and annoys everybody, Ray and Egon are still the brains but don't fight ghosts anymore, Winston runs for Mayor... whatever, you get the idea. But, unfortunately the direction they decided to go just wasn't popular.

:lol  I see what you did there.

I agree about the whole "manufactured controversy" idea.  That is why I objected to strenuously to calling those that were opposed to the movie as "misogynists."  For most, there was not argument whatsoever that women couldn't be the leads or that the movie was somehow inferior because women were cast in the lead roles.  That wasn't the issue at all.  But no point in beating a dead horse.  By now, it should be self-evidence why many did not like the film.  For those who did, great.  Enjoy it.  Moving along...
