I couldn't believe there wasn't a thread for this great band. I've always loved them. I've been hooked on them the past couple days. Their music went beyond the synth stuff of the 1980s and was very thought-provoking. I love Roland's voice. They've been working on a new album for the past year. It will be the first in like a decade, I think. Can't wait. From what I read, it's "dark." Let's appreciate this band!
-
I was so happy to hear that Tears For Fears were working on new material. Their last album, Everybody Loves a Happy Ending, produced two of their best songs ever in my opinion: "Secret World" and "Closest Thing to Heaven." Such a fantastic group!
-
The Seeds of Love is one of my favourite pop albums ever! I once heard the near-title-track described (very accurately imo) as "The Beatles + ELO". Woman in Chains has a great crescendo of sound leading to a late drum entry. The whole album is just ambitious and wonderfully composed.

I actually haven't listened to that album as much as the others. It didn't grab me much when it came out. I felt like it wasn't as dark and emotional as some of their earliest stuff, which is what drew me to them. But I'm giving it another listen now with fresh ears!
-
Love Tears For Fears. Head Over Heels is one of my favorite songs ever
-
Damn! I didn't know they were working on a new album. That's awesome! I absolutely love Tears and grew up on them. They were one of the first bands I remember hearing and the first band that got me invested in music to begin with.
By far and away my favorite album is Raoul, but I like The Hurting a lot more than Elemental overall (despite still really liking Elemental); I think the pre-breakup era has it's classics but overall I love Raoul so much that it kinda overshadows everything else. In summation, everything is awesome. Kinda weary on albums after such a long hiatus, but that could also be a really good thing I think so...I'll just hear it when I hear it and see how it is. Not expecting it to even come close to reaching levels of the past but then again nostalgia will make sure that never happens.
-
Seen them a few times in the 80'sand love this band. There last album, Everybody Loves A Happy Ending was incredible.
-
Great band
Woman in chains is my favorite song by them.
-
I only mentioned The Seeds of Love in my last post here. I also have to mention Shout. Probably the most epic pop song of the 80s. 6:30 of fist-clenched ambition.
-
Is it them that did "ordinary world" ? Or is that Duran Duran ? :lol
Plus I like their Donnie Darko song...
Beyond that I don't know much about them.
-

Umm.....that's Duran Duran.
And, the song Mad World came out a long time before the movie. The one that was used for the movie was a cover.
-
Yes i know that... I meant the original. I knew the one in the movie was a cover the whole time.
-
I actually think my fav TFF album is Elemental. There are some solid tunes on that album. And has any listened to Roland's solo album from the early 2000s called Tomcats Creaming Outside? Mmm, that is some good stuff.
-
Yeah that's a great album and might as well toss some love for Raoul And The Kings Of Spain.
-
God damn, I really love Elemental. Haven't listened to it for a while and forgot how many classics there are. Even the more mellow songs I absolutely adore; Gas Giants and Mr. Pessimist are amazing. That album will flip flop with Raoul for eternity.
-
+1 for Raoul And The Kings Of Spain. I saw them on this tour in San Diego. It was amazing!
Elemental is also a great album.
-
Finally checked out Everybody Loves a Happy Ending. Definitely some really good tunes on that one. :tup :tup
-
I picked up the vinyl of Songs From the Big Chair a while back. Good times!!

One of my favourite vinyls to spin. Working Hour <3

Pretty good band, definitely haven't gotten the attention they deserve. Fantastic songwriting.

Loved this album. I wish they has a follow up!
I had Call Me Mellow and Who Killed Tangerine? both stuck in my head all day at work. :coolio
-
How are the two albums from the 90s?
-
Very different but a little proggy. I love them. Worth checking out.
-
I never got around to checking them out, but I always meant to. What I've heard from those albums is great.
-
I'm liking the newest album and the songs from ...Big Chair I had never heard before to want to keep digging. I had Seeds of Love on cassette at the time, but have zero recollection of it outside of Sowing the Seeds of Love (which is still one of my all-time favorite tunes).
-
I haven't heard much by them but I like most of what I've heard. I'd heard "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" before, which I don't care for, but my formal introduction was the Elemental album, which I think is great. "Shout" and "Head Over Heels" are good songs too.
-
I love this band and thanks to this thread I am listening to them right now for the first time in a while :lol

Kev here are the 2 singles from the 2 albums that were only with Roland. I think you'll like them.

Good songs. I guess I'll be spending more money here soon. :lol
-
Elemental was only 5:99 at iTunes.
Bought. :tup :tup
-
Sweet! I bet you'll like the albums Kev.
-
I'm sure I will. This band is definitely more than just another pop act.
-
Year of the Knife from The Seeds of Love album...wow. Fantastic tune. :hefdaddy
-
Just want to say that this post...
There last album, Everybody Loves A Happy Ending was incredible.
...is pretty much spot on. I am shocked by how much I am loving this record. Every song is a winner. :hat
-
I happened to listen to it Monday!

:coolio

I wonder what's happening with their new album. Haven't heard anything.
Also, I didn't know TFF played on Jimmy Kimmel a few months ago! Link: https://consequenceofsound.net/2014/11/tears-for-fears-perform-the-hits-on-jimmy-kimmel-live-watch/

And on drums no other than Nick D'Virgilio!
-
bump.
I never really checked out these guys other than having that Tears Roll Down greatest hits over 20 years ago. But I've always liked their hits of course, and it's scary as when I went apeshit for Toy Matinee a little over 10 years ago, I often likened them to Tears For Fears. But I never went ahead and checked out the TFF catalog, despite that.
And Curt Smith guest starred on 1 of my favorite TV Shows Psych, multiple times, lol.
Like a month ago, I checked out Songs From the Big Chair and really loved a lot of it (beyond the hits).
So today I decided to take the plunge and start getting an idea about more of their catalog; with The Hurting, SFtBC, Seeds of Love, and Elemental on my playlist.
The Hurting I had on this morning and I am definitely enjoying it, although I'm really taken aback in many ways how much Roland's voice reminds me of Kevin Gilbert (or vice-versa) and at points Andy Partridge; and a lot of textures and instrumentation, key patches, guitar tones, percussion, etc, while a product of the time, sounds a helluva lot like Kevin's band GIRAFFE, LOL.
I likely will spend the next week or weeks/months getting to know their catalog well. A bit like my recent attachment to XTC actually.
I'm really surprised it took me this long..but of course better late than never.
-
Cool! Enjoy the back catalog. I've always seemed to love Elemental the most.
EDIT: When the heck is the new album coming out? I first heard about it like well over a year ago. If anyone hears anything, please share!
-
Hell yeah! Some of my favorite songs by the guys aren't featured in any of their greatest hits (per norm for me with most of the bands I adore). I grew up listening to Raoul And The Kings Of Spain and Saturnine Martial & Lunatic, so those will probably remain my favorites; but some of their earlier works are really interesting and groovy (I'm lookin' at you, Mothers Talk, Ideas As Opiates, Change and Pale Shelter).
Saturnine has some especially insanely awesome songs like Lord of Karma, Bloodletting Go, Ashes To Ashes (one of my top favorites of the band), and My Life In The Suicide Ranks.
Such a plethora of really diverse, ominous, dance-able, groovy songs. To me, Saturnine sounds like it came out of the mid-80's instead of the mid-90's and I really love it when bands have that sound that, whilst they release it in a later year (or decade), it sounds like it came from long before. Really cool stuff, enjoy the ride!!
-
The Hurting is the only 80s album I've listened to and it's alright, but I'm really into the 90s records that Roland recorded solo. Elemental is awesome!
-
I still can't believe how terrific Everybody Loves A Happy Ending is. 12 songs, and every one of them is a winner. :tup :tup
-
They need to release another album!!!
-
I agree! I'd love to hear what would come next. :coolio

Wow, I don't get the Kevin Gilbert connection at all. But then I only discovered Kevin Gilbert in 1994.
I haven't bothered with anything after Saturnine, Matial and Lunatic. What came after that?
-
Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I just wanted to confess my love for the band's music. I discovered them in 2005 (of course, by listening to "Shout" and "EWTRTW" on the radio/MTV), and later I become obsessed with their albums. I was in a huge TFF phase in 2008/2009 - specially with The Seeds Of Love and Elemental (my two favourites). I've always thought of their music as 'progressive pop'.
I haven't bothered with anything after Saturnine, Matial and Lunatic. What came after that?
In 2001 Roland released a solo album called Tomcats Screaming Outside, an electronica/drum&bass album (that I have yet to check).
Then, in 2004 the band released Everybody Loves A Happy Ending (the 2005 special edition includes 2 extra songs). It's a simpler, more conventional pop album ("Call Me Mellow" is perfect).
2006 saw the release of a short live DVD/album called Secret World, recorded the year before in Paris. The CD edition includes "Floating Down The River", a leftover from the last album (and, if I recall, somewhat similar to "Sowing The Seeds Of Love").
In 2013 they uploaded a few covers by current artists, and since then they have been recording a new album.
-
Tomcats Screaming Outside is a wonderful album. I highly recommend it.

I'll check it out then.
-
Hmmm, I'll have to check that album out, too.
Still can't believe how good ...Happy Ending is; Songs from the Big Chair is so great, too.
Has there been a more epic, fist-pumping pop rock song than Shout?
I've love to see them release more new music. :hat
-

I agree about "Shout", and according to a recent interview, they should be releasing the new album (or at the very least a few new songs) around the summertime (when they play some festivals).
-
Good to hear. Should be interesting to see what they come up with.
-
Just listened to .. Happy Ending this week. I can never get sick of that album.
-
Yep, it really is a fantastic record. 12 songs, and every single one is catchy as hell. The chorus to Ladybird is one of those ear worms that will be stuck in my head all day if I even think about it. See, there it goes... :lol :lol
-
I just sent that song in one of the Roulettes!
-
Nice! That should suck anyone in right away. :coolio
Listening to The Seeds of Love right now. Pretty ballsy and daring effort, when you consider the time period and the popularity they had attained due to their pop sensibilities.
-
When I heard that song and then Happy Ending you can hear their love for the Beatles.
-
Since I last posted in this thread, I've bought Songs from the Big Chair. I was familiar with the hits already. I must say, Listen is quite an incredible closer for the main album. This version also includes B-sides, and I absolutely love Sea Song, which I later found out to be a Robert Wyatt cover. For some reason, it sounds familiar from way back when, but I don't think I'd heard it until I got the album.
-
Just dropped in to say their version of Mad World was aeons better than the Donnie Darko Gary Jules version.
-

For sure. Not sure if you are familiar with Wilco, but they did a record called Summerteeth, that was very Beatles-esque at times, and to me, the verses of Ladybird sound like Wilco sounding like the Beatles. That will make sense if you know Summerteeth. ;)

I'll have to find that tune. That record is so good from start to finish.

I don't know if you were speaking of the original or the cover, but the cover also appears in Saturnine Martial & Lunatic, together with Bowie's "Ashes To Ashes" cover.

Ditto. It's their best song after all.

Hmmm, I like it, but I can't call it their best song. For me, Sowing the Seeds of Love is still hard to top. I listened to that song so much back in 1989 and 1990, while reading the lyrics along in the cassette booklet (yes, cassette :lol), that I can not hear it for years and still know it word for word when I turn it on. Those lyrics are ingrained in my head forever. :corn

The TFF cover. I listened to the 90-second snipped of it on iTunes. Sounded nice. I'l probably spend $1.29 on it. Why not? :lol
-
Everybody Wants to Rule the World is one of the earliest songs I remember listening to in my memory, back when my dad was a full time professional musician and spent all hours listening to the likes of 80s Rush, The Police, and Mr. Mister.
-
For me, Sowing the Seeds of Love is still hard to top.
This. Or Swords and Knives from the same album.
-
Oh, I've never thought much about favourites. It's been a long time since I last listened to the albums in full, but as far as I recall, they are:
- The Hurting: "The Hurting"
- SftBC: "Mothers Talk" (this one is hard because at least 4 songs are excellent to me)
- The Seeds Of Love: "Year Of The Knife"
- Elemental: "Brian Wilson Said" (another tribute to the 60s; the slow verse after the guitar solo is gorgeous)
- RatKoS: "Falling Down"
- ELaHE: "Call Me Mellow"
- sung b-side: "New Star" (cool Oasis-ish song; Roland's vocals & effects remind me so muh of Robert Smith)
- instrumental b-side: "The Big Chair" (I felt so happy when our psychology teacher made us watch Sybil in class, because I already knew about the story/samples. This track, to me, is as creepy as the film.)

The Police's Synchronicity was the first vinyl I ever owned. :coolio

That's a good one, too, but they just have too many other good ones. The Seeds of Love is just an awesome-sounding album. Crank that on a good stereo and it sounds fantastic.

Well, after a while I stopped caring about "Everybody wants...". And I don't remember ever enjoying "Listen". To me, it sounds much more like a b-side, not an album track. It just drags on for 6 minutes. Such a shame, because it's the closer of a very strong/concise album.
I agree with your comment on The Seeds Of Love, though. I like its sound much more than the sound of SftBC. The same goes for Raoul - it sounds much more organic to me than Elemental (although I think the songwriting in Elemental is far better).
-
See, I think Listen is a great closer. It just kind of lulls you into dreaminess as the album ends. Very effective.
I need to check out Raoul and the Kings of Spain; I still don't know anything from that.

Well, it's great that you like "Listen". Maybe I should give at a go - it's been a long time...
About Raoul: if you liked ...Happy Ending, maybe you'll like that one - it's a 12-song type album of simpler, catchier material. Roland recorded right after the Elemental tour, with the backing band, so it sounds different than the rest of their albums - much more direct, with more emphasis on the guitar (both acoustic and electric). I don't remember much keyboard/synth throughout (there is some, though).
In my opinion, there are some good songs, but many weak ones. When he goes into rock-star mode, it sounds really cheesy. But, you'll probably find something to enjoy.
Maybe you'll like that Oletta Adams, who guested in The Seeds Of Love, also guests here. And, the bass playing is by Gail-Ann Dorsey, who would go on to play with Bowie for some time (you liked Bowie, right?).
-
Yep, Bowie was great.
I am sure I will get around to that album sooner rather than later.
-
It is a fine listen Kev. Totally worth owning it.

Nice post! Let me add my 2 cents. I have almost everything TFF released - and their solo works - and Graduate!!! (I´m only missing Curt Smith´s last solo album) So I would like to give some suggestions:
Roland Orzabal - Tomcats Screaming Outside: Nick D'Virgilio on drums, a strong album, some very memorable tunes. The "A-Side" is upbeat - "For the Love of Cain" is basically a hit song - the "B-side" is introspective, tending even to sadness.
Curt Smith - Halfway, Pleased: Ah, this album is something. Very few people have heard it. It´s even more introspective than TSO, it´s verging on being bleak, even the more uplifting songs seems a bit desolate. You could check "Seven of Sundays", "Aeroplane", "Who You Are" (TFF re-recorded this song in ELAHE) and "Where Do I Go?". But the most potent song is "Addict" – 7m50s, with Smith repeating the same sentence over and over - "I know something about it". Quite beautiful.
Even though the albums were released with a 7-year difference (TSO on 2001, HP on 2008), they seem to be on a similar mental level. They are serious. It´s not A.O.R., but it´s music for mature people, in my opinion.
Sometimes I great angry ´cause TFF is everything but prolific - 6 album in 30+ years - but they are always original, and always do their own thing. They never, ever, did a single note trying to please labels or public or anything like that. They have a decency very few bands have.
-
Bump!
I have been on a huge TFF phase for the last weeks.
These guys were (are) true master pop-songwriters.
Love this band.
-
Me too!!
Songs From The Big Chair and The Seeds of Love are Masterpieces!
-
I still can't believe they haven't released a new album. I feel like a couple years ago they were reported to be working on one. I wonder how far along it is now.
-
I'd love to hear a new album by them.
10 days till I see them in concert!!
-

-
Great show from the band last night!
-
How long does each group play? I saw one hour for Tears and 1.5 for H&O. I just wasn't sure if that was true for all shows.
-
Obviously their Mad World was a fuck load better than the Gary Jules version.
-
75 minutes for Tears, 90 for H&O. Both played 14 songs.
Tears was much better. They played all of their hits (minus Women in Chains), plus two songs from ELAHE!! H&O was good, but leaving off three of their biggest hits and having slightly different arrangements of some of the hits they did play, was a bit odd.
-
They didn't play Rich Girl at your show!?! They did two nights before. That's too bad
-
Nope. No Rich Girl, Private Eyes or Kiss on My List.
Also, the setlist.fm set lists are off. The Tears for Fears set has all of the songs correct, but the order is not.
-
The guy reviewing the concert for the Dispatch must have just copied and pasted the setlist because he says they did play Private Eyes and Kiss on my List
-
Hmmm, I saw that. It looked like it was over when they were waving to the crowd and I could swear some of the house lights came on, but I suppose it is possibility we jumped the gun and missed the encore of Kiss on My List and Private Eyes. Oops. Oh well, I was there more for Tears for Fears anyway. :hat
-
Me too and every review, both personal and professional, have said Hall and Oates is okay, they tinker with their hits too much. However, everyone has loved Tears for Fears
-
That's because Tears for Fears is easy to love. :tup :tup
The thing with some of H&O hits is, some of them are really knee deep in the 80s sound, and that can be hard to channel in 2017.
I Can't Go for That retained the same vocal melody and that main keyboard line was in there somewhere, but it was sort of buried underneath everything else going on. That intro is one that would slay the audience. Instead, it was like, "Oh, a different arrangement."
Leading off Maneater with a new guitar riff kind of took away the slick and smooth feel of the song. They had an 8-person band, but all you really need for that song is Hall's voice, bass and drums for the rhythm that drives the song, the sax, keys, and Oates doing the jangly guitar. But that would leave two people doing nothing (three if Hall does the keys and singing). Can't have that, I guess.
Also, that main piano lead in One in One was non-existent.
-
Jeb, what 2 songs from ELAHE?
-
(https://r.fod4.com/c=sq/s=h250,pd1/o=80/https://p.fod4.com/p/channels/utvoa/profile/wEVFAVepQOuHTlNAJRda_Jeb.jpg)
:lol :lol
Title track and Secret World.
-
:lol
How the fuck did Kev auto correct to Jeb? :lol
I had to look this time to make sure Kev came up! :lol
-
Haha. Break It Down Again was one of the highlights for me (3rd to last song). 10 of the 14 songs were from the first three albums, with the rest being the two ELAHP tunes, Break it Down Again and they covered Radiohead's Creep.
-
Break It Down Again? Awesome!!!
-
It's hard not to sing along to their major hits, but Break It Down Again had me singing along and rocking out like you wouldn't believe. :coolio
I still need to get Raoul and the Kings of Spain.
-
Just saw TFF live last night in Austin. They did not co-headline with Hall and Oates in this show. Roland is great at the guitar. Man, had a great time. Below is the setlist.
-
Below what? :P
-
Below what? :P
LOL
Don't get me started! I tried pasting the setlist from setlist.fm and I started to get messages that I couldn't post here due to the IP's firewall settings and eventually my IP was blocked for trying several times.
Here's the link to the setlist

-
Dang, you got Woman in Chains and another song from ELAHE that we didn't get in May. I am jealous. :lol :lol
-
I could do without the Radiohead cover.
-
same here.
if anything, Radiohead should be covering them, lol.
-
With the exceptions of the three big hits from Songs from the Big Chair, Creep got the biggest applause at our show back in May, and I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case in most other cities, so I get why the band would want to keep playing a cover they obviously love and that crowds cheer loudly for.
-
Why not? Creep is a magnificent song, one of the greats of our time.
-
I like the song, I'm jut not a big cover guy for bands are established and have a big catalog of music. I didn't like when Rush did it. I didn't like recently when Toto did a Hendrix song. I like cover albums but live, i want to see them do their own songs.
-
same here.
if anything, Radiohead should be covering them, lol.
With you both, 100%.
-
New song:

Sounds pretty good after one listen.
-
Man it sounds like 80's TFT!!

For sure. The song is available on iTunes for $1.29. BOUGHT! :hat
-
I believe there are 2 new songs.

the song title is "I love you but I'm lost."
-
I found it on Spotify. Not 100% on it atm. Chord progression is pretty generic. They're capable of more inventive stuff on that front.
-
I've listened it a few times now!
I don't know about you, but i love this new song! Hopefully there will be a new album!
-
Finally! :)
I didn't like the song a lot. Here's the other one, sung by Curt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utbysyCpGpo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utbysyCpGpo)
Also weak to me. I was expecting something mind-blowing after so many years of waiting. I liked "Floating down the river" a lot, so even something like that I would have loved. Let's see what the albums sounds like next year...

The Seeds of Love is such a bad ass record. And the sound of it is immaculate. :hefdaddy :hefdaddy

A little generic electronica maybe, but good to hear the voices again. Will look forward to checking this out when it’s released. Roland looks like Gandalf now!
-
I am all over this. Roland's full gray look stunned me, but his voice still sounds very good. Such a good band.
-
new song is mesmerizing.

Sounds pretty good after one listen.
Thanks for sharing! I hadn't noticed.
This is actually very good! I didn't care too much for the 2 new songs they included on their 2017 compilation. But, this one was a nice surprise.
I've been waiting for this album for almost 15 years. It's great to know that they finally have a release date.
EDIT: Just realised that next month marks the 40th anniversary of the release of "Suffer The Children", their first single.

Enjoyed that a good bit more than the first single. I like how Roland sounds in that lower register.
-
that was real good, I love when they let their Beatles flag fly (that's what it sounded like to me)
-
Seeds is one of the greatest pop albums I know but I don't know the following albums very well (have heard Raoul twice or so). I am very excited for the Tipping Point and I think I will check out their later albums in preparation of the release!

I really like both Elemental and Raoul. Everybody Loves a Happy Ending is good too, but I probably like the other two better.
-
The guitar-driven sound of Raoul and Elemental albums is interesting compared to the huge production of Seeds, but I feel like both albums are lacking Curt's influence. I'm not sure though who of the two brings in which influence as I'm not as knowledgeable about them as I am with f.e. Steely Dan.
I am excited to hear Everybody Loves A Happy Ending as Curt was back in the band for that album.

See, for me I kind of got the sense that Roland was 90% of what made Tears for Fears great. He wrote most of the songs on Big Chair and Seeds of Love, and Curt only sang lead vocals on one track on Seeds of love, so by that time Roland was the biggest contributor to their sound. I think Elemental and Raoul both hold up well against the earlier TFF albums even without Curt, though there is more of a 90s style to them of course.
-
I thought Raoul was okay, but liked Elemental quite a bit. That said, I listen to the 80s album and Everybody Loves a Happy Ending (which is fantastic) a ton more.
The new song is really nice. Looking forward to this.
-
Elemental has a really great closing trio of songs with Power, Brian Wilson Said, and Goodnight Song. I also think Break it Down Again is one of their better pure pop tunes.

Really good song! Gonna be great to get an album of brand new material from them. :tup :tup

I have been listening to a lot of TFF recently, so this new album could not come at a better time! :tup
Break the Man is awesome, as is The Tipping Point!
-
Can't wait to see them live. It's been 35 years since I've seen them live. Crazy to think it's been that long apart.

Damn. A little bummed they aren't coming here this year, but I did see them a few years ago on that joint tour they did with Hall & Oates. That was pretty sweet. :tup :tup
-
That would have been cool. I saw Hall & Oates with Chicago in the early 2000s.
-
Was Oates still sporting his 80s porn stache? :lol
It was long gone when they were here a few years ago.

It was gone. Lol

that was really sweet! Although while I understand their promoting the new record it kind of irks me that every article or interview kind of erases Everybody Wants A Happy Ending, that was the REAL reunion album but it feels like it never got as much promotion. They jump from Curt leaving in 1991 to now but they say this is their first new album in 17 years leaving people to do the math.

Truthfully, it’s been longer since Happy Ending (18 years) than the time between Happy Ending and Seeds of Love (15 years). So this does sort of feel like another reunion album even though they have technically been together all this time.
Having poked around YouTube a bit to find footage of Nick D’Virgilio performing with TFF, there were quite a few high profile TV performances in promotion of Happy Ending. Late Night, Good Morning America (I think?), several UK shows I’m not familiar with. I’m not sure why it didn’t get a little more traction, since it was a nice fit for it’s time musically I thought. But it may have been just a few years too early for some of the more recent nostalgia that’s helped older bands thrive again.
-
They had tours between those years. They just never recorded a new album.
-

Right, and they’ve recorded the odd song for compilations here and there. Still, I personally didn’t really think of them as an active band over the last 18 years.

Well observed. For whatever reason the timing wasn't quite right. I really like that record though, but it does seem like on that one they rekindled their partnership by going full Beatles and that can only take you so far. This new one seems to come from a purer place, if that makes any sense
-
Anyone listened to the new album? Any good?

Anyone listened to the new album? Any good?
Started on it last night. It’s a bit… bland? I don’t dislike it, but the arrangements are very straightforward and the music is very electronic, but it feels more like an imitation of their 80s style without the warmth or energy of those recordings. Just seems to be missing something.
-
I'm liking the new album a great deal! It's very moody and perfect for the times, and I'm happy to see that it's getting such glowing reviews. Every song has something to offer, with my current favorites being "The Master Plan," "End of Night," and "No Small Thing."

Just picked back up with Rivers of Mercy. Now that’s a really beautiful song, with a more lush arrangement that recalls Seeds of Love a bit.
-
it's kind of new agey, almost a little more than I'd prefer.
I am going to give it a little more time, however when hearing the title track last year, I suddenly became really excited for this record. But I don't think there's another song like it on the album, nor a song I prefer to it, still, which ends up leaving me a little disappointed.
-
I was listening to the first track (no small thing ) on apple music through a dolby atmos system and there were some good surround effects, especially towards the end
-
they've been doing a lot of promotion. This performance of Break The Man for the Colbert show honestly sounds better than the album to me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVHqaESW8Ug

Listened to the album. Thought it was just ok on first listen, hopefully it’s a grower.
-

After about three listens now, I’m glad to report that it has been a grower for me. Still think the back half is stronger than the first, but it’s all starting to click pretty well.
-
Haven’t watched this yet, but Everybody Wants to Rule the World gets the “What Makes This Song Greay?” treatment by Rick Beato:

-
Definitely a grower. First listen was nice, but nothing really stuck with me. On the second go around, there's more coming out.
-
It's definitely a grower. I enjoyed the heck out of the album more today than a couple of days ago.
-
It is indeed a grower. I like it a lot now. :tup
-
I will be getting this later this week. I held off getting it right away as I did not want it always associated with a certain personal event, but I will be ready for it by this weekend. :hat
-
my current favorites being "End of Night"
I love that one. Great production.
-
Their performance of Everybody Wants to Rule the World on Colbert was really enjoyable.

Finally got the new album and gave it a whirl. Sounded good. A few songs stood out, a few did not, but I have read that it is a grower, so I am sure future listens will reveal more layers. :hat
-
Listening to this atm. I only know their hits but this is working for me so far. Reminds me of both the later Manics and Minor Earth Major Sky / Lifelines era a-ha quite a lot.
-
The album is a grower for sure. My fav song is "The Tipping Point," and I think it could've been a great opening track. One little thing that bugs me though is how the guitar playing toward the and of "River of Mercy" is the same as the guitar in "Woman in Chains."

I’m loving Rivers of Mercy, though I did spot that similar guitar part as well. Not sure it’s exactly the same, but there do feel to be a few call backs to earlier songs/styles throughout the album.

After a bunch of listens, the new album is good. Very good at times. Uncanny how they managed to recapture their 80s sound so well on some of these songs. While I loved the different direction of Everybody Loves a Happy Ending, which is fantastic, this one feels a lot more instantly familiar. Nothing wrong with that. :hat :hat
-
The band just started their tour and it looks like they are playing most of the new album. :tup :tup
See, that's how you do it. The older bands who release a new album and then play one or two token new songs and then nothing else from the last 20-30 years, it's like, what is the point in even releasing new material if you have so little faith in it to where you don't play most of it?
-
Thanks for that Rick Beato EWTRTW video! I truly love that song. I always seem to include it on my Playlist. To me, it's summery and bright and takes me right back to the 80s of my youth. So cool that Rick loves it too and is able to break down all the cool things that are going on.
-
Talk about bad luck. Curt Smith recently fractured his rib, and the band had to cancel the rest of their UK tour as a result. How awful, considering how well this album and tour were apparently both doing.

I did! it’s excellent, I’m not a guitar player but the level of technique involved is probably deceptively difficult. Just keeping the rythm steady alone is quite a feat

Yeah, it’s the bass notes and ability to keep the whole song moving at that tempo without any deviation that are really blowing my mind. I’m only a very rudimentary guitar player, so a lot of things impress me though!

TFF concert in Laval, Quebec last night was an absolute blast. Roland and Curt haven’t lost a step and their backing vocalist on this tour (Lauren Evans I think her name was?) is also amazing, Woman in chains followed by Badman’s song was a showstopper

While I would have loved more from Everybody Loves a Happy Ending, I get that it's not realistic at this point, but it's a well balanced set list. We got 18 songs - 6 songs from the newest album, 3 from each of the 80s albums, the 1 big 90s song, 1 from ELAHE and 1 cover (Creep). I am still surprised at how well they are drawing. It seems like so many bands from that era now have to play smaller venues or do package tours with one or two artists to sell tickets, but they played our biggest outside amphitheater (that has a capacity of close to 20K if the lawn is jam packed), and I would guess there had to be 12-15K people there.
