Title: FlyingBIZKIT's Top 50 v. The End is Nigh
Post by: FlyingBIZKIT on April 12, 2014, 09:42:10 AM
Now I know some of you followed my Top 20 Breaking Bad Episodes thread, and noticed I got about halfway. So I'm probably infamous for not finishing what I start, but I damn guarantee you all I will finish this AND (for those interested) The Breaking Bad thread. It's kinda like when I watch a show and I take a break for two days and I just never get back on it, because I'm lazy and forgetful. Anyway, I've been wanting to make a Top 50 albums list for a while. This will be my first one, so it's highly doubtful that there is stuff on here that you guys haven't heard. I haven't really explored the musical mountain so much, so when I look at lists like Zantera's and others, it really makes me feel like I haven't listened to anything at all :lol But here goes nothing.

I limited this Top 50 to 2 albums AT MOST, per artist/band. So unfortunately, my top 12 albums are not going to be all DT. Sad, I know. But to be more clear, If I wanted to have 2 albums by DT, and 2 by LTE, that's accepted. I'm just trying to put as much variety in here as I can. I will post my first 3 albums in just a little bit, so stay tuned. I hope you guys enjoy! :tup

Let's get going.

#50. All I Was - Tremonti (2012)

Years ago, my brother showed me the band Alter Bridge and he went on praising how great of a guitarist Mark Tremonti was. So I checked them out, and I loved it. As soon as I heard he was releasing this solo album, I bought it immediately. Mark Tremonti is definitely one of my favorite rock/metal guitarists out there today, and shout out to Accelerando, because I know he is a die hard Tremonti fan. This album is pure aggression, as heavy and fast riffs are just thrown in your face right from the beginning. His vocals are also a nice fit to the heaviness. This record surely displays the amount of talent and musicianship Mark beholds. It's nothing over the top or fancy, but it still delivers that same punch every time I listen to it.

Favorite Track: Doesn't Matter

#49. Texas Flood - Stevie Ray Vaughan (1983)

Speaking of great guitarists... MAN! SRV is certainly one of the greatest of all time. Blues Rock may not be for everyone, but you cannot deny how great of a musician Vaughan is. Texas Flood is probably the greatest blues rock albums of all time. While I'm not too familiar with this genre, I'd love to keep delving deeper into it. His playing on here is phenomenal, and there's no other guitarist like him. Some of the songs are really laid back, such as the title track and Dirty Pool, and some are just insane, such as Rude Mood. Rude Mood has got to be one of the most complex guitar performances I've ever heard. It's a shame Stevie is gone, because the world lost such a talented musician. RIP :metal

Favorite Track: Texas Flood

#48. Epicloud - Devin Townsend Project (2012)

I have just recently gotten into Devin's music, and I can't believe I've waited so long. I was a bit skeptical for a while because I guess I didn't quite understand him, and how he can add so much goofiness to his music. Well, I still need to hear more Devin, but this album has definitely been a fun listen. All the songs are catchy, and it only took one listen for this album hook and reel me in. It's a really loud album, and it's almost like a giant wall of sound. It somehow really fits though with his style of music, and I quite like the production. Lucky Animals is certainly annoying, in a good way of course :lol What amazes me about Devin is how diverse his music can be. Some of it is really emotional, and some really just wants to make you laugh. Epicloud is definitely an amazing journey, that I'm pretty sure everyone here has already heard. :lol I'm just late to the party, but better late then never, right?

Favorite Track: Where We Belong

Please excuse my write ups. I'm doing them as I post. I can't really write them ahead of time because I just write better as I'm doing. These write-ups are not going to be very long, and they may seem disjointed. So sorry about that.

I've always thought SRV looked like an ape on that album cover because his hand and nose are so big, his skin is kind of dark, and his sideburns.

Whilst I can't say anything about Tremonti because I have no idea who or what he is, the other two are a fine pick to start off a top 50 list!

Good to see SRV get a mention - not a big follower of Devin or Tremonti but always happy to give them another go.  I remember buying Steve Vai's Sex and Religion when Devin was plucked out of relative obscurity ......showing my age  :\

Here are two more!

#47. Animals As Leaders - Animals As Leaders (2009)

Animals As Leaders is quite an interesting project, and Tosin Abasi is an incredibly talented guitarist. What's cool is I live an hour away from Atlanta, and I recently found out that Abasi went to school at the Atlanta Institute of Music. I was actually really interested in going there, but I changed my mind, and well I didn't even try applying :lol This band is instrumental, and that's probably for the best, because I feel the guitar does all the talking. I'm not much of a guitar guru because I'm only a drummer but I think Tosin uses an 8 string guitar on here, allowing a wide variety of tones. The playing is technical, and it's pretty heavy, making it an awesome and fun listen. It's one of those albums I really have to be in a mood for, but when I am, wow, it's amazing.

Favorite Track: On Impulse

#46. I Get Wet - Andrew W.K. (2001)

When I was maybe 10 years old, my brother showed me this album. At the time, it was really funny to me, and it just seemed like a silly album. Well 9 years later, I still think it is. The best thing about this album is the presence of high energy. Andrew W.K. is an eccentric dude, and I've only heard this album of his, but this guy sure can rock. It's simple, straightforward hard rock, with some vocal melodies that are just plain fun to sing along to. The lyrics, strangely enough, are somewhat relatable. I feel down the road, this might be one of those real nostalgic albums for me. The song writing isn't like your average Pink Floyd, but this is one of the must fun albums I've ever heard, and it never fails to put me in an amazing mood. That's why it deserves a spot on this list.

#45. Mylo Xyloto - Coldplay (2011)

One thing you'll notice about my Top 50 is that it's a bit varied. You might all of heard of the 50 albums I post, but as far as genres go, they vary quite nicely, I think. This one comes off as a guilty pleasure but I think not. I'm not ashamed to admit that I have a really great liking for this band's newer material. I've heard such bad reviews of this album, and I cannot understand why. This album is one of the most upbeat albums I own, and it really gives off a lot of positive energy, like Andrew W.K., but not like Andrew W.K. There are some miraculous songs on this record, one which includes a nice guest performance from Rihanna. I listened to this album quite a bit junior year of high school, and it brings back so many memories every time I hear it. This one might create a few laughs, but I don't care. The album definitely holds a place in my heart.

Favorite Track: Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall

#44. Machine Head - Deep Purple (1972)

Definitely one of the best classic rock albums I've ever heard. Deep Purple is popular, but I always feel like they've been overshadowed to some of the bands like Floyd, The Who, and Led Zep. The guitar playing in this album is stellar, but I really really love the drumming, and the keys. Well, I guess I love it all. It's fairly short, being only 7 songs, but all of them have their own identity, and of course, one of them is Smoke on the Water. Gillan's vocals on this album are top notch, and he definitely shows his presence in all of these songs. It really sounds like they had a lot of fun recording this album, and that's what music should be about. Maybe I'm blind, but I haven't found many Top 50 lists on here that have included this album. I feel it's a bit underrated, 'cause it's surely a classic. :metal

not only is this the first mention of Machine Head, but this is the first Deep Purple album to make a current top 50 list (Scorpion had Made in Japan in his v1, but it was removed in his revised list).

#43. Impermanent Resonance - James LaBrie (2013)

I had only heard very little of James LaBrie's solo work when I bought this album, but I definitely made a wise purchase. Seneca influenced me to buy this, so props to him. Every song on this album has a catchy chorus, making it very memorable. LaBrie has his fans, and his haters. I've always enjoyed his vocals with Dream Theater, and it's nice hearing them in a different musical environment such as this. Instead of longer progressive metal, it's more just straight-forward metal. Someone mentioned there were some cheesy moments on this album, which is probably true, because that's just James LaBrie. It's a wild ride listening to this, and I always catch myself singing along to all the tracks. The drumming by Wildoer is the perfect amount of aggression and precision, too.

Favorite Track: Holding On

#42. Black Holes and Revelations - Muse (2006)

One of the first albums I bought and really got into. Muse has always been such a fun band to listen to, and this is definitely my favorite album by them. All the songs are wonderful, with the exception of Supermassive Black Hole. My favorite thing about Muse has always been the vocals. Matthew Bellamy is incredibly talented at what he does, and he's among my favorite singers. This album fuses styles such as electronic and hard rock. This album is a must-listen!

Favorite Track: Map of the Problematique

#41. Blak and Blu - Gary Clark, Jr. (2012)

One of the most diverse albums I have ever heard. This album contains several elements of blues, rock, R&B, pop, and even a little country. I recently discovered Gary Clark, Jr., and this is his first and only album. I'm not sure if he plans to continue a solo career or play with others, but he is one of a kind. Some of his playing really reminds me of a new-age Stevie Ray Vaughan, in songs like "Numb" and "When My Train Pulls In". I've heard mixed reviews on this album, with the bad ones discussing how it's not cohesive, and it's really jumbled. I look at it as him just showcasing his range as far as his musicality goes, and maybe in future work, he'll focus on a certain area of playing. Gary Clark, Jr. makes this album easily accessible by the wide variety of song styles, so it's not exactly a hard album to get into.

Favorite Track: Numb

#40. Boston - Boston (1976)

Quite possibly the greatest rock album of all time. Boston never did put out a whole lot of music, but this album is the definition of a masterpiece, and I feel bad for not putting it higher. Everything about this album is perfect, and it's got a certain magic to it that not many others have. There's really not much else i can say about this album besides that it is glorious in every way. Maybe my version 2.0 list will have it higher. IT'S BEEN SUCH A LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG TIIIIIIIIIMMMMMMMMMME.

#39. Lonesome Dreams - Lord Huron (2012)

I just heard this album maybe 2 weeks ago, and it has already found its place on my Top 50 list. Might be a bit quick to judge, but I really enjoyed this album, and gave it several spins. I was searching on Sputnik and found this, and I don't think there's a thread here for it. Another really happy, almost dreamy album; It's one of those albums you can just put on headphones and drift off. That's what I did and it was quite a wonderful experience. Not sure if anyone else has heard this, but it's a really solid album. Something you really have to be in the mood for, but it's some of the most beautiful music I've heard in a long time.

Favorite Track: The Ghost On The Shore

#38. Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends - Coldplay (2008)

Yeah yeah, I get it. This band sucks major donkey dong. Well, this is the last you're gonna see of them :lol This album is easily my favorite Coldplay album (is that really saying anything?). Of course it is. This album is haunting in a very gorgeous way. I probably can't explain why I like this band, but I guess I don't need to. This is a band I can listen to , and it really helps clear my mind, and positive thoughts start rushing through my head. The final track is simply amazing, and it never fails to give me chills. Every time. Gah lee. I can just see you all with face palming as you read this. Anyhooooooooooooo, See ya Coldplay.

Favorite Track: Death and All His Friends

#37. Flying Colors - Flying Colors (2012)

As soon as I saw this "supergroup" of Portnoy, Steve, Neal, and others, I knew I had to get this. It really intrigued me because it wasn't a prog rock project, like I thought. It turned out it was basically a rock/pop kinda project, which was cool and new to my ears, especially from these guys. I spun this album countless times as soon as I got it, and it was in heavy rotation for months. Great musicianship on this album, and Casey is just an outstanding vocalist. I really wanna see these guys live, because I'm sure they can put on a great show. One thing on this album that makes me laugh is the end of Shoulda Coulda Woulda, it's like Portnoy forgot he wasn't playing drums on Train of Thought. Very fun album, and I had to have it in my top 50.

Favorite Track: Everything Changes

#36. Peace Sells...But Who's Buying? - Megadeth (1986)

Talk about some of the best metal in existence: classic Megadeth. Megadeth was the first heavy metal band I got into, and I still listen to them to this day, especially their older material. I've always thought they were light years ahead of Metallica. It took me a bit to get used to Mustaine's vocals, but I've really come to appreciate them, as they come off very angry and emotional. Megadeth's songs are basically extreme riff-fests, and they've come up with some really brilliant guitar parts that'll make your head spin. Megadeth was a gateway band for me, but that doesn't mean they leave my rotation. They are always a fun listen, and they never seem to get old.  :metal

And you'll get no flack from me for Coldplay because I don't think I've ever heard one of their songs  :lol

that was a great point by Doc above.  When one only has 200 albums, that means 25% of the collection HAS to make the list.  So, in essence we can't fault you too much for including Coldplay (twice), as you just haven't explored enough.  We can fault you for how/where you rank them.   :D

Flying Colors is a great album... but only the 2nd best album from 2012 that featured Neal Morse and a former DT member.

Yeah this is really just a preliminary list to really get my feet set, and as time goes on, maybe a year or two from now, I'll make another one. And I'm sure it would be a lot different than it is now. That's why I was a bit hesitant in starting a top 50 because I didn't really feel "ready".

Ready or not, it's fun and I'm glad you're doing it.

At the very least, you'll be able to look back at it down the road, smile to yourself, and secretly agree with past me for making fun of past you for including Mylo Xyloto.

#35. Vena Sera - Chevelle (2007)

Chevelle was one of the first rock bands I got into, and I still listen to them here and there. Vena Sera is an incredible display of Chevelle's best stuff. Chevelle often gets hate because they tend to follow the same formula on every album, resulting in a common sound. While this is true, I feel Chevelle really hit the spot with this one, and I don't think they'll ever replicate something as good as this again. If you like good rock music that can really create some beautiful songs, like Saferwaters, this is an album to check out.

Favorite Track: Well Enough Alone

#34. The Social Network OST - Trent Reznor And Atticus Ross (2010)

The only movie score to appear on this list, and it's a damn good one. If you're not much of a Nine Inch Nails fan, you're most likely not gonna like this album. It's got a NIN vibe to it (duh), but all of it is instrumental, and it's one of the most haunting scores I've ever heard. The movie itself was pretty good, but the best part is definitely the soundtrack. There's a good selection of tracks on here, and it's a nice mind bending journey. If you don't care to see the film, I still highly recommend the soundtrack.

Favorite Track: Intriguing Possibilities

#33. Welcome to My DNA - Blackfield (2011)

I don't care what people say about this album, I find it magnificent. Blackfield is one of my favorite bands, and I feel Geffin does not get the credit he deserves. Steven Wilson does his fair share on this album with some great tracks like Waving, Glass House, and Far Away. For some reason, this album isn't received well, especially on here. I know people say "Go To Hell" is a laughably awful track, but it has grown on me. Yeah, the lyrics are still silly, but the music is great. Blackfield doesn't necessarily give off positive vibes, but it does hit home in a lot of songs. Aviv is a great vocalist, and his work with Steven Wilson is truly great.

Favorite Track: DNA

Sorry for the short delay, It's time for finals, so I've been busy.

#32. Moving Pictures - Rush (1981)

Rush has never been one of my favorite bands, but I do like them a lot. Moving Pictures, to me, is their greatest work, because every song on it is pure genius. I still have not heard all of Rush's albums, but maybe this will change one day. They have created a lot of great music, so there's a lot to listen to. Peart's drum work on this album is some of the best you'll ever hear. Not much I can say about this one since everyone has heard this, but yah.

Favorite Track: The Camera Eye

#31. Office of Strategic Influence - OSI (2003)

Man, I absolutely love this band and how unique they are. It's hard to find another band that sounds quite like OSI (Excluding Chroma Key). When I first heard Kevin Moore was doing vocals for this band, I was like "WHaa?" But they fit so perfect with the atmospheric rock/metal sound. If I were to describe OSI, it'd be very hard, so it's best just to listen for yourself. Once again, though, I'm sure everyone has heard this. Oh, and I find a really similar vibe with ShutDOWN and Hex Omega by Opeth.

Favorite Track: ShutDOWN

#30. Lizard - King Crimson (1970)

King Crimson is incredible at what they do, having that aggressive prog rock sound. This album is nearly perfect, and the laughing at the end of Indoor Games is really one of the highlights. This album's mood is dark, and nearly psychotic. It's not a very long album, and there aren't many tracks...but it does have King Crimson's longest song IIRC. The title-track is one of the best songs I have ever heard, and having Jon Anderson doing guest vocals really makes the song even better. I know my list has had a lot more modern stuff on it, but I think down the road when I make another list, it will have more classics like this.

Favorite Track: Lizard

I prefer ITCOTCK and Red, but that's okay.

Moving Pictures is hard to argue with. Not my favorite Rush album, nor top 3, but that's less to do with how much I like MP and more to do with how much I like Farewell to Kings, 2112, and Hemispheres.

I really should ask this for every list, or people should just start divulging it when they start.  How many albums do you own/know enough to consider for your list?  Being the science guy, I need to know the sample size to properly known when to praise and harang you.

And you'll get no flack from me for Coldplay because I don't think I've ever heard one of their songs  :lol

If you were a real scientist, you would instead be telling us that this method of determining how knowledgeable the list-maker is is fatally flawed because each person's list would suffer from massive survivorship bias.

You can listen to thousands of albums, but decide most of them aren't worth purchasing.  So one explanation for a different size catalog is how selective one is, rather than how knowledgeable they are.

I don't think we should be criticizing people for their lists or perceived lack of expertise.  I think we should be appreciating that they're sharing them with us.  And I think that's what I see in this forum 99.9% of the time and that's great.

nicmos,

First off, look in what you quoted me.  I said, "How many albums do you own/know enough to consider for your list?", thus implying that he could have albums that he knows and doesn't own.

Secondly, it was not an attack, and I'm pretty sure Luke knew it wasn't an attack on him.  If you were more of a regular you'd know I tease everyone here, and the general rule is the more I like someone the more I get on their case.

Bitch, hold on. Alright, sorry bout that. You know how I am. Unreliable.....and there might be some SW in this list.. so sorry to whoever is following and doesn't like Steven Wilson. I believe Mason is the anti-Steve guy on this forum, am I right?

#29. Blackfield II - Blackfield (2007)

Blackfield's best album, easily. Every song on here is short and sweet. That''s the one thing about this band I really love and appreciate, as it's nice to listen to them and "breathe" after listening to a lot of the music I usually hear. The albums aren't very long, and about every song they've made is really catchy and gorgeous. Steven Wilson and Aviv Geffin are a great tag-team, and together, they both can create some quality music. My first discovery of this band was on Pandora, which I rarely use. I believe I was listening to PT radio, and the first BF song I heard was Christenings, which was on this album. I'm glad I made this discovery and many on this forum seem to like them too. Cool.

Favorite Track: Some Day

#28. Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine (1992)

RATM is one fun band to listen to, and probably the closest thing to rap music I'll ever listen to. I guess you can define their music as a great combo of Metal, Rap, and Funk. Unfortunately, they only had 4 albums, but I think all 4 ended up being really great albums that still hold up to this day, especially the self-titled album. RATM is one of those bands you really have to be in an energetic mood to listen to, well, for me at least. Great guitar work on this album, and the vocals are well-done and certainly fit the music very well. This sentence right here is only filler, and it's use is to make this write-up actually appear longer and more interesting. Great stuff!

Favorite Track: Settle For Nothing

#27. Storm Corrosion - Storm Corrosion (2012)

Probably a surprising pick, but then again, probably not, since it's Steven Wilson. This is a very weird project, but a good one. There are actually no plans to make a second album, which is a bit disappointing, but who knows what'll happen. Storm Corrosion brings a lot (or little) to the table with such ambient, atmospheric music. It's very dark and haunting, but peaceful and calm at the same time. The title track and the final track are some of the most spectacular pieces of music I've ever heard. Mikael and Steven make a great pair, but what they've created here sounds nothing like Porcupine Tree nor Opeth. That's why it's awesome.

Favorite Track: Ljudet Innan

#26. Blood - OSI (2009)

OSI has given their best effort here, and it's their heaviest album (I would say). I love Mike Portnoy and Gavin Harrison, but I always felt like Harrison's drumming really clicked with the music more for this band. His drumming is more aggressive, at least in this project. There aren't really any long songs on here, with the lengthiest being just under 7 minutes. Matheos really displays some awesome work here, writing some brilliant riffs that shine on their own, or backing up Kev Mo's vocals. This is easily OSI's darkest album, and it's their best.

Favorite Track: Blood

Yeah, only one update. Cause that marks the last album before my ultimately amazing Top 25.

And here we are, my Top 25!

#25. The Raven That Refused to Sing (And Other Stories) - Steven Wilson (2013)

What an album! Wilson has 3 solo albums, and all of them sound different. This last one feels like classic prog, mixed with some modern sounds. Most of the songs on here are longer, but there are only six tracks. I first heard Luminol on the Get All You Deserve blu-ray, and I thought it was the most fantastic and energized song he's made as far as his solo efforts go. There's a great amount of musicianship on this album. Steven Wilson and his usual beautiful layered vocals. Marco's drumming is perfect for this album: over the top and everywhere. Also not to mention Govan's badass guitar work , especially his solo in Drive Home. The Raven is full of incredible journeys, but the end of this album is really what makes it special for me. I always thought Wilson was a very good vocalist, and this song really supports that. Everything about the title track is beautiful, and is one of the best songs Steven has ever created.  :heart

#24. The Mountain - Haken (2013)

When awaiting this album, I was expecting something more along the lines of the first two albums, but this one is really different. Same band, same style, but I felt this was the most mature approach, yet. I thought it was pretty cool at first, but it took a little while to really click with me, unlike the first two, which clicked instantly. I've seen people compare Haken to DT all the time, and I just don't see it. Sure, they're both progressive metal, but these bands sound a lot different from each other. I'm really curious to see how the future for Haken looks, as they've got a lot of potential to be one of my favorite bands of all time. Anyway, The Mountain has a lot of variety: Absolutely beautiful tracks (Because It's There), and quirky ass metal (Cockroach King). One thing that really needs to be mentioned is the chorus of Falling Back to Earth. That has to be one of the best choruses I've heard in a song in years. SAY YOUR LAST GOODBYYYESSS, I WON'T BE BACK AGAINNNNNNNN

I remember right around The Mountain's release, everybody adored it yet blasted Cockroach King. Never understood why. It's a killer song, one of my favorites from the album in fact.

#23. Blackwater Park - Opeth (2001)

It took me a little while to get into really heavy music, and it was always the growls that really pushed me away from it. It always interested me, the presence of heavy music WITH heavy vocals, but I couldn't find the right bands. I think recently I've gotten into more metal, and it's been a fun ride. Opeth is a grand example of progressive and death metal combined. Blackwater Park was the first album by them I've ever heard, and it just really punches me in the face every time I hear it (If you don't believe me, I'll show you the bruises). Opeth surely isn't like other metal bands, the amount of melody and aggression they put out on these albums is insane. Mikael has some of the most haunting vocals I've heard, out of any band. I know Opeth is really big around here, so I don't have to say much more. This album is a classic.

Favorite Track: Blackwater Park

#22. Pulse - Thomas Giles (2011)

While BTBAM is certainly a very heavy band, the vocalist sure did put out a very different solo album. Pulse is only the first album from Tommy, but a new one is supposed to be here by the end of this year, I think. One thing I've always loved about the band was Tommy's clean vocals. I was curious to hear an album where it's nearly all clean vocals, though, and I could never get that with a BTBAM album. Pulse is the perfect response to that. This album was written and composed completely by himself, with the exception of one song. While everything on this album sounds nothing like BTBAM, these tracks really are simplistic, but beautiful at the same time. His vocals shine on this album, in really just about every song. Two songs, Medic, and Catch and Release, involve some of his heavier vocals. Pulse is a very experimental work, and I can't wait to see what he brings to the table next time around.

#21. The Whirlwind - Transatlantic (2009)

This band is magical. This album is magical. I've always adored the Portnoy/Morse combo, and I think Roine and Pete are so gifted at what they do. One of my favorite parts about this album is actually the production... you can hear everything (even the bass) perfectly. Unlike TA's first, second, and fourth albums, this one has several tracks. I guess it can be considered one giant song, but I don't really look at it that way. This album is really rocking and grooving all at the same time (On the Prowl, Evermore), and some are just dazzling (Rose Colored Glasses). The Whirlwind, I think, is easily the most accessible Transatlantic album, it's got a bit of everything in it. It has been a long time since I've last listened to it, so I think I'll go do that now.  :metal

#20. The Afterman - Coheed and Cambria (2012-2013)

Yeah, I know, they are two separate albums, but they are one story, so I always listen to them as one. I actually bought the signed version of the complete 2 disc version a while back, and it's beautiful. Coheed and Cambria is a band that took a little while to really swallow ( :yeahright) Once they clicked, they became one of my favorites. I haven't listened to them much recently, but just doing this write-up makes me wanna run through their discography again. I don't really know which disc I would say is better, as both are great. I'd probably just say Descension..it has more of my favorites. All Key Entity Extraction songs are really great, and there are a lot of other great random ones. Coheed, while maintaining that same form over the course of their albums, I feel like their sound has changed over time, which is good, in this case. It sounds nothing like their other albums, and that's what I love about it. After the somewhat disappointing Year of the Black Rainbow, it's nice to see them step their game up again.

I still haven't listened to the Whilrwind, but I can appreciate your choice of The Afterman. Although, I'm not entirely sure I would agree with you that all the Key Entity Extraction songs are great. Holly Wood is probably one of my least favorite C&C songs; it's got the most unpleasant vocal delivery I've ever heard from Claudio.

Transatlantic is a band I've bought a few discs from and not got around to yet (classic style prog rock not being my thing I'm not sure how I'll react to it ) but the others I've tried and (mostly) failed to like.   The only track on Blackwater Park that did anything for me was Harvest (I rated it very highly) and I liked (but wouldn't rave over) about half of Damnation so I suppose that says something about my taste there.  They're the only albums by Opeth that I have.

C&C I've sampled plenty and never found much to like - will try your recommend track though.  I will likely recover my enthusiasm on the return of some classic rock and metal :)

#19. The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion - dredg (2009)

I actually listened to this just a couple hours ago, and I forgot how great it was. dredg has a really clean sound to them, especially on this record. There are many tracks, but some of them are merely transition tracks and it allows for the album to flow really well. The whole album is very good, but it really picks up at Cartoon Showroom. Those last four tracks are just perfect, and it's one of the best ways to end an album. The first song I heard off this was Gathering Pebbles and I thought this was just the coolest band. I think Gavin Hayes looks a lot like Mark Ruffalo. Anyway, I've seen them get a good bit of recognition on here, and it's well deserved. I actually have Catch Without Arms and El Cielo, but this one stands out to me the most.

#18. Metropolis Pt II: Scenes From a Memory - Dream Theater (1999)

I won't go on too much about this one, for obvious reasons. Scenes has it all: A good concept and great music. Rudess makes a wonderful debut on this one, and James sounds fantastic on here. For a while, I hated Home. Which is funny, because now, it's one of my favorites. This album took some time to grow, but it really paid off. It's a very good winter album, I think. Anyway. Yeah.

#17. Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through The Eyes of Madness - Coheed and Cambria (2005)

Coheed's best album easily, for me. When I first wanted to get into this band, I remember just blind buying two albums. This, and In Keeping Secrets. Turns out, I chose the right ones. That was before The Afterman was released, of course. My first spins of this album, well I thought I had wasted my money. The vocals were really not up my alley, and it just felt weird. Though one night, this album just clicked. I was falling asleep, and it just really hit me. It was beautiful. This album is full of amazing songs, and of course has what is probably their most popular song, Welcome Home. Coheed and Cambria is a band I like to listen to during the Summer, so maybe that's why I've been in a big mood to listen to them.

Favorite Track: Apollo II: The Telling Truth

#16. Rust In Peace - Megadeth (1990)

This is the first metal album I heard. Before this, I didn't listen to anything close to metal, and I never thought I would. This album will always be high in my rankings due to the fact it still holds up and that it was a gateway album for me. I still go back to it a lot, and it just did a great job of opening me up to more metal. And not just metal, but more rock. I really feel like I would have never heard of Dream Theater if it were not for this album, and that means there would be no top 50 list from me (THANK GOD!). This is by far the best thrash metal album I've heard, with Peace Sells being a distant 2nd. Metallica just doesn't do a whole lot for me, and I feel Megadeth (at least the old albums) is the king of thrash metal. This album has some of the best solos and riffs I've ever heard, and I just love Ellefson's bass playing throughout the album. This is a classic, and I will always love it. Oh, and for those of you that haven't heard it and are interested, listen to the original version. The remastered version REALLY bothers me.

#15. Ghost Reveries - Opeth (2005)

I've already done this, but I'd like to, once again, thank _floyd for really getting me into this band. I had wanted to listen to them for the longest time but just had no clue where to start. The first song he recommended was "Bleak" from Blackwater Park, and I thoroughly enjoyed that song and album. The 2nd Opeth album I really got into was Ghost Reveries, and I found it to be even better than BP. Ghost Reveries has a great prog and metal blend that just works so well. I love how songs like "The Grand Conjuration" can just be so heavy and make this a bad ass album, and I also love that GR has one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in a long time, "Hours of Wealth". Opeth is certainly good about being able to write in a variety of styles, so props to them for that.

#14. We're Here Because We're Here - Anathema (2010)

When I first joined this forum (3 years ago today!), I heard nothing but constant praise about this album and the band. I had never heard of Anathema and I didn't know what they sounded like. I remember giving this album a spin a while back, but didn't really think much of it. I guess I was in my big DT fanboy phase at that point, so I was stingy when it came to other music. A year or so later, I tried again. It worked, big time. Anathema has to be one of the most beautiful bands I've ever heard in my life, and WHBWH does an outstanding job of making me feel happy. This is one of the only bands I can really listen to, where no matter what is going on, I can just be happy. The lyrics, the music, it's just simply gorgeous. I have yet to hear a lot of their earlier material, and I know it's different from the music they've put out recently, but I'm very curious about it. Dreaming Light is probably one of my favorite songs I've ever heard in my life.  :heart Oh, and I can't wait 'till the new album comes out! :tup

#13. Terria - Devin Townsend (2001)

The first album of his I've ever heard, and that was about half a year ago. This shit is great. This is the perfect blend of his heaviness and his mellowness, unlike Ghost and Deconstruction. I've heard a lot of complaints about how the album doesn't get good until the third track, Earth Day. Well sir, I think Olives and Mountain are fucking fantastic! The first DT song I actually discovered was Canada, and that surely was a fine choice. Terria just has so many epic, tear jerking moments. Nobody's Here is just gorgeous, the lyrics, the music, everything. This album isn't super technical, and it just flows with pure emotion. And Stagnant...so catchy, just an awesome chorus. I feel like a fanboy here, but man, this is just an incredible album. I hope everyone gets to hear this who hasn't already. I know I'm a bit late to the party, but at least I made it.  :metal

It's one of those albums where you really need to experience it as a whole, with a lot of focus. Definitely one of the albums that needs to be heard before death. So much inspiration can be found in this album, it's crazy. This album never gets old, what a masterpiece!

Terria is a hard one to get into, plus the sound isn't that great, but on the whole it's my favourite Devin album by a long shot. The atmosphere is just unbeatable.

Is the atmosphere comparable to Ki, or completely different? I've always loved the atmosphere on that one.
Title: Re: FlyingBIZKIT's Top 50 v. New Update, yo.
Post by: Scorpion on May 23, 2014, 08:46:13 PM
I kinda suck at describing atmosphere, but Terria definitely has more ambiance than Ki. It also feels more... I dunno, at peace with itself? Ki has that sort of underlying tension, that threatening vibe under the surface, that's only waiting to break loose, you know what I mean? Terria doesn't really have that.

Can't really describe it better than that. Though, to be honest, I know no one who likes Ki and doesn't like Terria, so I'm pretty sure that you'll like it?

Sounds promising. I definitely get what you're saying about the tension in Ki, but I've always felt so at peace in listening to that album. Maybe that goes back to my first couple listens, when I was really exhausted. I do think there's something to be said for the impact of the circumstances of the initial listen through an album. There's a sort of residue left there, depending on state of mind, that affects later listens. That's just my two cents...

But with your blessing, and Luke's, I'll definitely put some time aside for a listen through Terria. Hopefully soon.  ;D

You'll hear similarities between the more ambient tracks from the two but as a whole, Terria sounds very serene though immensely heavy at certain bits and rather catchy on others. It's probably his most diverse album so even if you don't like it in its entirety (which isn't likely if you're a Devin fan honestly :lol) I guarantee you're gonna find some songs that you'll love to no end.

I think Earth Day is one of the best things Devin has ever done, but as a whole I just don't get the enjoyment out of Terria that I do out of say OM:B or Synchestra.  But I'm not complaining-- Terria's a very good listen.

#11. Visions - Haken (2011)

Haken's best album. The first Haken song I discovered was the behemoth of a song, Visions. It is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard in my life. Haken is one of the only bands I've ever heard that instantly clicked. All my favorite bands, well, I didn't instantly like them. I started loving this band right away. They only have 3 albums so far, but all 3 are fantastic, and I can't wait to see what they pull out of their asses next time. Every track is gold on here, and it flows so well. I bet you don't REMEMBER ME. Haken is fairly popular around here, but to those of you that have not heard them, listen to the song, Visions. If you don't enjoy it, well, u crae crae.

Favorite Track: Visions

#10. One Day Remains - Alter Bridge (2004)

I can thank my brother for this one. He bought this right when it came out...and I was 9 years old. This is an extremely personal album to me, especially as of late, considering the hardship I've faced last year. A lot of the songs didn't really do a whole lot for me, until recently, and now, they mean so much. In Loving Memory, Shed My Skin, Down To My Last, Broken Wings, and Open My Eyes are all extremely beautiful songs. The overall theme of this album may be cliche, but I find it very inspiring. The album title refers to living life like there's only one day left. I feel like many days I've wasted, just because I mourned over things, and didn't feel motivated to do anything. Then, this album really hit. I feel great. It's a sad listen every time, but the message behind it really does guide me. Myles Kennedy and Mark Tremonti are so good at what they do, and are some of the best musicians I've had the pleasure of hearing. I find this album to be more enjoyable than AB's later albums. While it's not as heavy, it doesn't need to be. The theme and music are both perfect to me.

Favorite Track: In Loving Memory

Both are good albums, but not my favourites by their respective artists. Visions is good (DEATHLESS :heart) but I think that The Mountain is on a whole different level, with Parodeilia being my favourite Haken song ever (the BREATHE IN THE PAIN section is godly).

Similar, while I like One Day Remains, it's a little Creed-y for my tastes, and my favourite is Blackbird, which I consider to the album where they first found their own sound, as opposed to sounding a lot like Creed with some additional sprinkles thrown in. Plus, the title track on that album and Watch Over You are probably the best things that Alter Bridge have ever written.

#9. Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd (1975)

Pink Floyd's best album, fo sho. First Floyd album I heard, and it still remains my favorite. Shine On You Crazy Diamond might just be my favorite song of all time. At least it sure feels like it when I spin this album. Only 4 songs on here (if you combine both Shine On tracks) and all 4 are completely different, and perfect :heart Wish You Were Here is one of the most emotional albums I've heard, and it can bring me to tears, unlike a lot of music. The title track sure brings back a lot of memories, and it's a song that never gets old. This is the 2nd album of the "Big Four Floyd Albums", and I think it's the best, by a good margin. I love Dark Side and Animals as well... I find The Wall to be a bit overrated, but it's still nice. Anyway, on to the next

Favorite Track: Shine On You Crazy Diamond

#8. Grace For Drowning - Steven Wilson (2011)

Beautiful, just beautiful. Some may consider this album a bit long, but it's just amazing. It seems most people prefer The Raven to Grace, but Grace really outshines the others, I think. So much variety on this album, and a lot of influence, especially from KC's Lizard. Grace is one of those albums I put on when I don't know exactly what I'm in the mood for, because this album has it all. There heavy moments in tracks such as Raider II and Remainder the Black Dog, and some more mellow moments in songs like Postcard and Like Dust I Have Cleared From My Eye. I guess if I had to pick between the first disc and the second, I'll just go with the first, but both are outstanding, and so different. This album really is a work of art, and it really made me okay with PT being on an indefinite hiatus. I can't wait to see what he brings next, because I know it'll be great.

I'll admit I generally struggle with music that is as "laid back" as these two...........I do love Shine On etc...... so Gilmour often has a way of drawing me in despite my usual tastes whereas Wilson usually doesn't quite manage it.  I've sampled a few tracks off GFD and, although I certainly don't actively dislike it , I'd really have to be in the mood for it.

#7. The Fragile - Nine Inch Nails (1999)

What a long album, but a great one. Never in my life, would I have imagined a Nine Inch Nails album being one of my all time favorites. That was probably because I had no idea Reznor had this kind of awesome ability. While The Downward Spiral is considered the best NIN album, I don't think it even comes close. Neither does Pretty Hate Machine. While those are good, The Fragile is a completely different machine. I blind bought this at Best Buy, and I had no expectations as to what this album was going to be like. I figured it'd be cool. So the night I purchased it, I decided to give it a spin. Well, after the first 3 songs, I got tired and went to sleep. It's very overwhelming, especially when there are two lengthy discs of music. So I just took it one disc at a time. I listened to disc one for a long time, and I just absolutely loved it. I almost forgot there was a disc two. Then I started listening to that, and was amazed just like I was with the first one. The thing I really love about Trent Reznor is that nobody else sounds like him. His creations are so unique, and they are very memorable. I have a feeling a lot of you haven't heard this album, but I strongly recommend it. It's nothing like The Downward Spiral (Which can be really chaotic). This is a perfect album.

Favorite Track: The Big Come Down

#6. Colors - Between the Buried and Me (2007)

Funny story about my first experience with this band.. My friend Matt and I were searching for some new music to listen to, and we came across BTBAM. We started Prequel to the Sequel, and we were thinking "WOW! This is so cool!" Then the vocals came in, and I remember saying "Next!". Wow, was I stupid. I was very bullheaded and didn't want to expand my musical tastes. I finally went back to this band later, and slowly got into them. The first song I really liked was White Walls. Of course, the heavy vocals really threw me off. I only truly enjoyed Tommy's clean vocals, but as time passed, the heavy ones really grew on me. Now, I fucking love them. _floyd and Seneca sure know my love for this band.. :lol Something about BTBAM just really clicks with me. Colors is one hell of a ride, too. It flows so smooth, and it's just a great listen from start to finish. Several highlights in this album, I can't even begin to name. RE BUILD RE BUILD RE BUILD RE BUILD.  :metal What can I say? I'm wubsessed with this band.

Definitely agree about Shine On You Crazy Diamond. I'm not sure I have an all time favorite song, but that one has to be way up there. :heart

And Colors. :metal My favorite BTBAM album. Just amazing front to back. The last couple minutes of White Walls is probably one of the most epic, emotionally-driven moments in music history.

#5. Signify - Porcupine Tree (1996)

A year ago, I would have had this in the bottom half of my Porcupine Tree album rankings, but now, it's at the top. I don't know, and I can't explained what happened with my relationship to this album, but it clicked like a son of a bitch. I always thought The Dark Side of the Moon was the best album to listen to with headphones in the dark, but this tops it. Signify holds a very important position in PT's history, as it was the bridge between the psychedelic (early side) and the more modern (later side) sound. Signify is a very mellow album, and very dark, but it is unbelievably beautiful. I think Dark Matter holds the spot for Porcupine Tree's  best song. They've never made anything else like it. Many songs on this album took a long time for them to grow, such as, well, all of them. I guess I never really understood this album. And now that I do, I'm glad I did, and it's just spectacular.

Favorite Track: Dark Matter

#4. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence - Dream Theater (2002)

Used to hold the #1 spot for my favorite album, for a couple years. Over time, I wouldn't say it has really fallen, but others have just surpassed it. Not gonna go on a whole lot about this for obvious reasons. SDOIT is by far my favorite DT album. SFAM is 2nd, and it doesn't even come close. All 6 songs on this album are magnificent. I remember doing a top 50 DT songs list, and all songs from this album made my top 10. That was a while back, but I still think it applies nowadays. Love it.

#3. Weather Systems - Anathema (2012)

I always enjoyed We're Here Because We're Here, but Weather Systems really appeals to me even more. This album contains some of the most precious music I've heard.. both Untouchable songs are great, with the first part being more upbeat, and the second, more chill. Vincent Cavanagh can really sing is heart out too, along with Lee Douglas, and of course Daniel Cav. Lee's performance on Lightning Song is just outstanding. The Storm Before the Calm is just the definition of gorgeous, at the end of the song. Internal Landscapes is one of those songs that can really take you away, and all you feel is happiness. I don't know how many times I've heard it, but I get the same feeling every single time. I feel like most people like WHBWH better, but I just can't see it. This album is a jewel. Also, can't wait! Distant Satellites is coming out very soon.

I can certainly see how SDOIT could be in your top spot.  That album shows DT's peak creativity and skill.

Weather Systems is a really enjoyable listen for me when I'm working.  It is great at what it does.  In some ways I think it is superior to WHBWH, but not all ways.  Not the type of thing I would put in my top 50, but I like it a lot nonetheless.

#2. The Parallax II: Future Sequence - Between the Buried and Me (2012)

Holy shit. What an album. I debated putting this at #1, but I had to settle for #2. So now you don't have to kill me, Nelson. Also, no drive-by from Mason. This album is intense, and I can't even begin to describe how intense. It starts off beautifully with "Goodbye to Everything", a slow paced, acoustic driven intro track. Tommy delivers some very beautiful clean vocals, and it sets up for the next track, "Astral Body". Astral Body is probably one of the more accessible (if you want to call it that) songs by BTBAM. It's not too lengthy, but still delivers the same punch. "Lay Your Ghosts To Rest" is an outstanding track, hitting you in the face from the get-go. It's just over 10 minutes, and doesn't disappoint. The chorus is one of the best in their discography, as it's very memorable. Then follows a mellow section, with an awesome bass performance. Then hits, "THE END STARTS NOW!". After this ride, there's a short breather, "Autumn", with some weird ass alien noises. Then begins the keyboard intro of "Extremophile Elite". This one has been in my rotation as of late. The intro is the definition of badass. Great riffs, drumming, and everything. I really love Tommy's vocals on this song, he doesn't hold back. One thing I like about this song is that it pays homage to The Parallax: Hypersleep dialogues. Another breather after this heavy hitter: "Parallax". A spoken word track, which then leads into "The Black Box". A short, but awesome vocal and piano performance from Tommy. Next is probably the most intense BTBAM song I've ever heard: "Telos". Tommy sounds legit angry in this one, and it sends chills (throughout my body). The chill solo ambient section in the middle of the song is one of the major highlights of the album. The guitar solo is just sick. Tommy then emerges with more clean vocals, really shining. After this, it picks up the pace again and he sounds pissed again. "Bloom" is one weird track. It's got a bit of a "Surfer Death Metal" vibe to it. I really like where they went with this one. It's very different from their other stuff, and it's a very fun track. "Melting City" was the only song on this album I didn't appreciate when I first got this album, but now it's incredible. Has intensity, but also has the most beautiful part of the entire album, starting with the flute solo. That part actually makes me feel as if I'm in space, drifting. "Silent Flight Parliament" is the longest track of the album, clocking in just over 15 minutes. Being that long, it goes through several changes, but reprises much of the earlier moments in the album. It's great. "Goodbye to Everything Reprise" is the final track of this brilliant album, as it fades out. When this came out, I loved it. However, it has ONLY gotten better. BTBAM really was a band I wasn't fond of at the beginning of my musical search, but they have clicked like a World of Warcraft player getting his new gaming mouse. This album makes me feel good.

Favorite Tracks: Lay Your Ghosts To Rest, Extremophile Elite, Telos, and Melting City

Maybe a stupid question considering what BTBAM is about, but does this album contain lots of growls?

#1. Lightbulb Sun - Porcupine Tree (2000)

This album is pure nostalgia for me. This is the one album I can go back to, no matter what. I feel I can really relate to a lot of what's on here. Relationships, childhood, etc... it just hits the spot. This probably isn't a very surprising pick, but yeah, it's my favorite. There are some songs on here that aren't regarded very highly such as "How Is Your Life Today?" and "Four Chords That Made A Million", but I love them as well. There's a certain magic to this album that I've never heard in another album. It's unique. The title track starts the album off in a really comfortable way, and the lyrics are basically about childhood and staying home from school some days just because. I remember doing that. I had like, 15 absences one year in middle school, and I was sick maybe 3 of those. Not skipping just to skip, but I'd always go off exploring into the woods or something. I felt really independent, it was fun. "Shesmovedon" and "Hatesong" really remind me of a special someone, and they're two totally different songs. "Hatesong" has the badass hard groove throughout. "Last Chance To Evacuate Planet Earth Before It Is Recycled" is just outstanding. It starts and ends in completely different ways. Almost like a little ballad at first, but gets in this spacey atmospheric vibe as it goes on. "The Rest Will Flow" is short but sweet, giving off great positive energy. "Where We Would Be" really hit me hard recently, and I didn't realize how beautiful it was. I love the pace, and the relaxing mood, until the messy solo. But I love the solo, it's so out of place in the song, but it fits so well. If that makes any sense. It has my favorite line of the whole album: "Strange how you never become the person you see when you're young." "Russia On Ice" was my first Porcupine Tree song, and it still remains one of my favorites. It's the longest track, and it's just gorgeous. Slow, moody, dark. "Feel So Low" is fantastic, and closes the album on a really dark, melancholic note. The thing I really admire about this album is that it's an emotional roller coaster. When the album starts, I feel happy and upbeat. When the album ends, I feel a little down, BUT satisfied. It's a bittersweet kind of thing. Anyway, that's it.

Favorite Track: Where We Would Be

Good idea getting in before we got a chance to do any more guesses  ;D

Thanks for a cool Top 50 - lighter prog rock isn't really my thing so I couldn't relate to a lot of it but I found it an enjoyable read ,  and tried out a number of song samples................I will do the same from your #1 as I haven't heard that album.  Some of the stuff on Signify I found decent so there's hope  ;D

Wow! I didn't expect that ending. I prefer Colors over The Parallax, by quite a large margin and Lightbulb Sun isn't even nearly my favourite PT album, but oh well. Nice list though :)

Lightbulb Sun, that album has a very Wilson-y feel to it for sure.  I know what you mean about nostalgia.  While I wouldn't put it at the top of my list, Rush's Roll The Bones has that place for me, I will always love it even if it's not the best album.  Reminds me of the time in my life when I was discovering non-pop music for the first time.  My brother made a cassette of it from his cd (I didn't have a cd player yet) and I wore that cassette out.  The cassette had a small jump right at the end of Dreamline where it repeated the last chord of that song twice, I can still hear it in my head 23 years later.

It's always good to have something in your memory you can draw on to help you remember certain times in your life.  The older you get the more treasured your memories will be.

great list, thanks for sharing!

Don't often hear people whose favorite album is Roll the Bones, that's for sure! Great album though, and coincidentally I think it would probably rank around the same spot as Lightbulb Sun for me.

well, actually I didn't mean to imply it's my favorite album.  sorry if that was confusing.  I just mean it has a special place in my heart.

I will be starting my top 50 list later today, so you'll get to see what my real top album is.
