Title: Web's Rookie Roulette! *FINAL Results!*
Post by: WebRaider on April 11, 2014, 06:34:05 PM
My intention for wanting to do a roulette is almost solely to find new (to me) music. There's lots out there (new and old) that I haven't really taken the time to get more into or just haven't come across yet and this as you all know is a great avenue to take the time and discover new music. So as basic as can be, my judgement will be based on what I think of the musician/band/songs that are sent but I prefer it to be something that I haven't really listened to much, if at all. It can come from just about any generation and genre if you feel confident in it.

There's been so many interesting ways of running these roulette's, determining a way to go about it has been a struggle. I love the themes but I feel like themes sometimes get in the way of choosing a band/song, so it will be quite vague in those terms but you'll be able to send the best of the best throughout.

I know there have been bands I've missed over the years some really far back so for the rounds with theme's I'm breaking it up between two 30 something year periods of modern music. Wanting to find older and some very new bands as well and feel this can help, also some of you tend to know older bands better than new and some know the newer bands a bit better so it somewhat evens the playing field.

Rules and stuff:

Rules are, I make the rules as I go along...lol...

Hoping to have 10 contestants and 10 rounds... I'll move quickly so if you join please be willing to be timely with submissions. Once a musician/band has been used it can't be used again. If a band can't be used or whatever and it's sent I'll notify and allow for a change. Scoring will be 1-10 with .5 increments as well.

I don't really want to eliminate anyone along the way but it helps to keep the competition fierce and with the scoring reseting after elimination rounds the final 6 contestants should all be in the game as we come down to the end!

Submissions can be sent to my email at musicnut77@gmail.com . Youtube would be preferable but if you need to send in other ways just let me know, sure it will be fine.

Round 1: Free Round

Round 2: 60's-80's

Round 3: 90's-10's

Eliminate Bottom 2 contestants (SCORING RESETS)

Round 4: 60's-80's

Round 5: 90's-10's

Round 6: Free Round

Eliminate Bottom 2 contestants (SCORING RESETS)

Final 6 contestants will compete in 4 final rounds but I won't reveal the final themes till we get to that point.

Round 7: 60's-80's

Round 8: 90's-10's

Round 9 and 10 ??? Mystery Rounds ???

hhhhmmmm... Upon review of your last.fm, seems as though your musical tastes are a few degrees sideways from mine.  This shall be fun and interesting.

I like the decade segmentation for the rounds.  Will be reviewing my options over the weekend.  Don't think I'll have any problem in finding bands you don't know whatsoever.

You can go ahead and kick my butt, but ....

Say, Raider... are you wanting tunes that will lead you to explore the band, or just wanting excellent new music - meaning, one-hit wonders would still appeal to you?

one more question - what is the cutoff for how many plays a band has in your last FM that can be sent?  Over half of the artists have less 4 or less plays, and another 15% are at less than 10 plays.

oh ffs.  Can I ever get in a Roulette without you so I can use the material you've introduced me to?   :rollin

Every now and then I might not play so ethically.   :P

I give you free reign to use what you wish. Based on his last.fm taste, most of what I'll be sending here isn't from the stuff we mutually dig anyways.

Say, Raider... are you wanting tunes that will lead you to explore the band, or just wanting excellent new music - meaning, one-hit wonders would still appeal to you?

If I'm being honest, songs from bands that I will really get into is what I'm looking for. I want the roulette to lead me into new bands, musicians that maybe I haven't had time to listen to or really considered in the past. I figure this will force me to really take the time to evaluate some bands I haven't given a chance or that I don't even know.

one more question - what is the cutoff for how many plays a band has in your last FM that can be sent?  Over half of the artists have less 4 or less plays, and another 15% are at less than 10 plays.

There's a lot I listen to that might not have made it on my Last.fm or is on there very little. If it looks like I haven't listened to the band very much and you think I'd dig it then feel free to send something. As I noted above I'm willing to allow for another submission if I can't really accept the first one sent.

I think we have all but one slot filled for this roulette! :tup

Web's Rookie Roulette: Round 1

First want to say everyone did a superb job right out of the gate. There was nothing anyone sent that I didn't at least like. So I feel like I'm going to really find lots of music from this roulette! I know the write-ups aren't all that in-depth but I want to spend the time listening to the music and really taking in what I think of it. If you all have any questions afterwards feel free to shout at me about it..lol

senecadawg2

Beyond the Bridge - Where The Earth and Sky Meet (7.0)

Really quite a beautiful song. I love rock music that incorporates piano. The guitar solo midway is nice and the choir vocals really help bring the song along. This seems like a tune that would be even better in the context of an album. Overall its a nice song with an epic sound, that while I feel where they were going lyrically, just seems to meander a bit.

Big Hath

Redemption - Walls (8.5)

Killer intro! Awesome percussion and bass. Really got my attention from the start. Seems very DT-like musically. I see that Ray Alder is the vocalist for the song and I've just started to get into Fates Warning not too long ago (still haven't delved far into that as of yet). He sounds really nice here!

lonestar

The Omega Experiment - Gift (8.0)

Put a smile on my face immediately. Playing right into my wheelhouse with the wall of Dev sound and the layers. Doesn't quite have the strength vocally of Dev, though it doesn't have to. I like the heaviness of it while it retains nice melodies.

Evermind

Vanden Plas - Vision 9ine: Soul Alliance (7.5)

Dig the big sound the song has. Keys are well placed and give the song nice depth. Like the driving bass and guitar in the verses. I enjoy the vocal melodies.

jingle.boy

Flaming Row - Rage of Despair (7.0)

Love the guitar and riffs throughout! I think I enjoy the music more than the vocals. The story the song goes through is very interesting and gives a definite reason for the aggressive vocal. I like the interplay between vocal styles.

orcus116

ISIS - Threshold of Transformation (6.0)

Comes in with a bang and I like the dark, barren vibe it carries through. I like harsh vocals but usually prefer them to vary pitch or break it up some, or for me it begins to drone (which I guess is the idea here). I really like this musically though.

Nekov

I Mother Earth - Juicy (8.5)

This has so many bits I enjoy about "alternative rock" music. It's not a straight up rock song but it's definitely rocking. Really like what I hear from the vocalist in the song. I'm actually slightly shocked I've never heard of the song or band.

Dr. DTVT

Evergrey - Recreation Day (7.0)

Another song that kicks right in with the riffs! I like the building vocals at the start. I really like the music, guitar and the singer's voice. They kind of lean on the chorus a bit, but apart from that I really like it.

Lucien

Shostakovich - Symphony No. 5 (6.0)

I was wondering if someone might throw a curve at me in the free rounds. Although I don't find myself listening to classical music often I do appreciate it and for the most part enjoy it. This piece really moves. My favorite part is when it slows and darkens and then rises again towards the end. Not a bad choice for a curveball.

Ultimetalhead

Rishloo - River of Glass (7.5)

I had heard of this band somewhere else when someone asked for bands sounding similar to Tool. I hear that some but they definitely have their own unique sound. I like the fire that the singer has even though his vocals sound off here or there. I actually think if they pulled them back some in the mix it wouldn't even really be an issue at all. Regardless it does give it a raw feel which I like, the music is great and overall I enjoy the track!

1st Round Results

Big Hath: 8.5
Nekov: 8.5
lonestar: 8.0
Evermind: 7.5
Ultimetalhead: 7.5
senecadawg2: 7.0
jingle.boy: 7.0
Dr. DTVT: 7.0
orcus116: 6.0
Lucien: 6.0

Round 2 will be limited to bands/musicians from the 60's-80's! Keep sending the good stuff guys!

Don't feel bad about it.. it's not very far back at all. All scores were pretty close together. As I noted, I liked everything that was sent just to different measures. It's when someone sends something that is way off the mark I guess would be reason for concern and even then its just a game. I was very pleased with the submissions in the first round! Keep it up!  :metal

Yeah I've heard of ISIS before and I know they are similar in style to some other bands I listen to as well. I don't HATE the vocals it's just I guess I'd prefer the pitch change or get broken up a little more (as I noted). I don't mean to be a cheerleader but really everyone did a good job in the first round and I at least liked everything.

Round 2: 60's-90's

Another solid round overall. I know it gets a bit more difficult to find some older bands or material that I may not have heard but in many cases here its definitely worth the effort.

senecadawg2

King Crimson- 21st Century Schizoid Man (7.5)

Obviously this is a band and album I've heard of before. It's one I've long intended to give a listen to but have just not gotten around to. I've heard of this song before as well but this is my first full play through. My immediate reaction is to the power of the music, the quality of the musicianship and the manic frenzy composition. Extremely hard to believe this was released in 1969.

Dr. DTVT

Marillion - Sugar Mice (6.5)

This song caught me off guard. For some reason I thought this would be much more proggy than it turned out to be. This had a touch of pop and definite late 80's radio sound. I like the lyrical story of the song. I like the music and particularly the guitar quite a bit. Get a Mike & The Mechanics vibe from this song. The vocals seem strained to me a little like he's wanting to go bigger but keeps holding back.

Big Hath

Al Di Meola - Suite Golden Dawn (7.5)

Whoa! Was expecting total jazz type stuff but there's lots of groove and of course the playing is impeccable. Reminded me lots of Zappa material without so much of the insanity. Being a longer instrumental the groove behind keeps my attention and flows well with the stellar leads.

Nekov

The Waterboys - Rags (6.0)

Liked this a bit more than I expected I would. The horns are quite an interesting addition in the song and it works really well IMO. Like the strong vocals for this type of music. Most vocals in this style of song and from this era tend to be very frail from my perspective.

UFO - Rock Bottom (7.5)

I've heard lots about this band from the biggest fan on the planet I believe in radio and tv's Eddie Trunk, but this is my first listen. Love the catchy riff right out of the gate. This is a straight up driving rock song. Schenker's solo is pretty smoking (no surprise!) and really takes the song to another level.

Evermind

Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms (6.5)

My brother had this album when I was young and played it often but I only remember the hits "So Far Away", "Money for Nothing", and "Walk of Life".... and I enjoy those but I really don't know a whole lot about the band beyond that. Well, I take that back I've heard lots of people talk a lot about Mark Knopfler's guitar playing and that's exactly what I take from this song. Really love the great slow building guitar throughout.

Ultimetalhead

Yes - South Side Of The Sky (7.5)

Here's another band that obviously i'm going to be to some extent familiar with. I know a number of their hits and what's been played on classic rock radio, and enjoy those songs but hadn't really explored their catalog. Ulti made sure to send me a deeper cut to check out so that I could get more familiar with this legendary band.

What I really like most here is the edgier sound and the slightly darker vibe than some of the radio songs have (not that I dislike them, just that this shows a different side). The band is just as tight here as they are in the songs I'm familiar with. Clearly great musicians!

orcus116

Death - Politicians In My Eyes (7.0)

Well first off pure punk music hasn't really appealed to me so I was hesitant from the beginning. The sneaky groove and jam that is found here really sold me. Fairly simple and quite raw in the way punk music should be, but the chorus was very different than you'd usually find. Found this interesting and enjoyable!

jingle.boy

Winter Rose - Asylum City (7.0)

Surprise! I somehow was unfamiliar with the backstory that included Sebastian Bach and James LaBrie being in this band and jingle.boy bounced through a couple submissions before enlightening me here. Ripping right from the start and yep thats our boy LaBrie! Actually really enjoy the tune and LaBrie's vocals and maybe I'm influenced slightly from what I'm used to hearing him sing but the two styles don't really seem to mesh when he really takes the higher vocal parts. Of course being a bit of a hair metal fan I really like the guitar and music so thats a bonus!

Lucien

Vangelis - My Face In The Rain (5.5)

All I really know of Vangelis is the classic composition for the movie "Chariots of Fire". Almost anything athletic related seemed to have "Titles" played somewhere in the 80's.

Now on to "My Face In The Rain"... I like the almost ethereal quality to the music and enjoy the synths and or keys he uses here to create the feeling of almost standing in the rain. I have to assume the vocal style is specific to create a mood of being alone but it just doesn't do much for me.

King Crimson- 21st Century Schizoid Man (7.5)

Extremely hard to believe this was released in 1969.

No matter how many times I listen to that song I always think exactly the same thing.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner on this question but I don't think there should be. I mean unless it ventures into 20-30 min territory I guess it could be considered an album side lol.

Yeah… There are a couple songs I was thinking about at around the 20 minute mark, but I figured it might be best to hold off on that. I feel like it's really difficult to rate songs of that scope next to the shorter songs, and not entirely fair to either.

Round 3: 90's-10's

As I imagined, the competition here is very tight. Coming across some nice musical discoveries and no one is really sending anything way out of my interests.

senecadawg2

Brand New - Luca (7.5)

Really like the melody of the music and vocals. Interesting song writing with regards to metaphorical lyrics etc. Reminds me of dredg or Thrice to some extent. Really powerful finish!

Nekov

Demains - Naive (7.5)

Oh wow! I really dig the intro of this song going from the nice acoustic to powerful electric guitar. Decent vocals, I caught a hint of an accent and looked up that the singer is French... it's not distracting, just noticed it. I Like the uplifting tone and lyrics.

Big Hath

Bruce Dickinson - Book of Thel (8.0)

Although I do know much about Dickinson through Maiden, I haven't gotten very far into his solo career as I've only heard "Balls to Picasso" in the past. Awesome guitar intro catches my attention right away. Definitely seems to be a much more aggressive vocal approach from Bruce here which isn't bad, just a little different. Nice riffs throughout, VERY cool drums little over halfway. Good tune!

lonestar

The Deadstation - Subsistence Defined (7.0)

Bam! Not sure I was ready for that scream at the start..lol. Can hear many influences on the band in this song. The vocals feel a little strained to me at times but when the music quiets down he really shines IMO. There's lots here I like musically but it seems a little by the numbers for this style and that's the only real knock I have on it.

Ultimetalhead

Foxy Shazam - Oh Lord (7.5)

Have heard lots of people talking about this band. I really like the boisterous type style. The vocals while good, seem raw at points but I guess it's just part of the style he's going for. It wouldn't be necessarily fair to expect Freddie Mercury just because the look and style seem similar...lol. I enjoy the upbeat lyrics and catchiness of the song.

Evermind

Kamelot - Nothing Ever Dies (7.5)

"Power metal" style bands can be hit or miss with me but you guys have been pretty good finding good tunes to send. Like the big vocals, nice riffs and solo here. Lyrically it seems a bit scattered but I really enjoy the tune.

jingle.boy

WarMachine - Dust to Dust (6.0)

I really like the guitar here throughout but the vocals throw me off. I don't think the singer's voice is bad or anything, just his phrasing in this song maybe?

Dr. DTVT

Enslaved - Death in the Eyes of Dawn (7.0)

Interesting to hear the acoustic guitar underneath behind the whole song. I am still coming around to growls and find that I like certain styles better than others. I honestly am a bit off-put by the growling vocals here but as I mentioned before I like it when its not just that way through the whole song. And as it turns out I REALLY like the clean vocals in this song so the fact that they mixed it up definitely helps.

orcus116

The Dandy Warhols - Bohemian Like You (6.0)

This is kind of laid back alternative. Not a bad song but not a lot stands out. Its a little straight forward for my tastes in this style of rock. Its a little poppy and catchy.

Lucien

The Enid - Tripping the Light Fantastic (8.0)

Wow! Don't even know how to describe the sound of this. It's like Pink Floyd and a Disney film soundtrack mixed together... Really very neat!

Standings after round 3:

1.Big Hath: 16 (8.0) = 24
2.lonestar: 15.5 (7.0) = 22.5
3.Ulitmetalhead: 15 (7.5) = 22.5
4.senecadawg2 14.5 (7.5) = 22
5.Nekov: 14.5 (7.5) = 22
6.Evermind: 14 (7.5) = 21.5
7.Dr. DTVT: 13.5 (7.0) = 20.5
8.jingle.boy: 14 (6.0) = 20
=============

9.Lucien: 11.5 (8.0) = 19.5
10.orcus116: 13 (6.0) = 19

As I noted we have to whittle down the field as we get further along so that the competition is much tighter for the finals. Want to say thanks so much to Lucien and orcus116 for their submissions.

Lucien provided a discovery of The Enid with an exceptionally enchanting song "Tripping the Light Fantastic" and orcus116's submission of Death's punk song "Politicians In My Eyes" was really quite cool. Thank you very much guys!

Round 4: 60's-80's

Competition is getting tougher and maybe the scoring is too? Or maybe I just had a bad couple of days lol... seriously some interesting selections on the whole, just a little off from the beginning rounds but found some good stuff here too :)

Big Hath

Tower of Power - Squib Cakes (8.0)

Mmmmmmmm nice break beat intro and then come the HORNS! I've always heard lots about the quality of TOP's music and it's absolutely here. Although I'm a big fan of certain R&B, Soul and Funk I don't listen to it nearly enough. Obviously superb groove throughout here and that organ is getting busy all over this song.

jingle.boy

Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Karn Evil 9 (1st Impression Pt.2)  (7.0)

I've heard bits of this song on classic rock radio and honestly didn't know it came from this group. Classic intro before Emerson goes to work really carrying this song but I enjoy the drums a bunch here as well.

Nekov

Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays - Ozark (6.5)

Very upbeat piece. Really enjoy the interplay between the guitar and piano. Particularly impressed with the piano performance.

senecadawg2

Electric Light Orchestra - Sweet Talkin' Woman (5.5)

Ok here's a slightly funny little backstory... As you can see above jingle sent me ELP and when he did I emailed back with the wrong acronym of ELO and he responded...

Emerson, Lake & Palmer > Electric Light Orchestra.

SO,does that hold true in this instance for me?... I think it does :/

My brother enjoyed ELO quite a bit when we were growing up and there are a few songs I do really like by the band (Turn to Stone, Evil Woman, Don't Bring Me Down, etc.). I was hoping a deeper cut would give me a different insight into the band but this particular song just doesn't really do much different than the songs I know by them and doesn't do it any better IMO.

lonestar

Triumph - Headed For Nowhere (6.0)

Saw that Steve Morse played on this track and kept waiting to see where it would take off. It finally did towards the end and it really saved the song for me. The song was a fair tune but I'd probably had preferred to listen to the guitar track the whole way through cause that was quite sweet.

Evermind

Jon Lord - Sarabande (6.5)

Nice, nice groove and mellow guitar to start. The synths and percussion really stand out in this track. Probably would have enjoyed it even more with some Coverdale vocals somewhere here lol, but aside from that very nice composition overall.

Ultimetalhead

Candlemass - At The Gallows End (7.5)

Definitely has a Sabbathy vibe music-wise. The singer clearly pushes the limits a little considering his vocal abilities but it's not bad. Really right down my alley with the riffs and guitar though. Pretty cool!

Dr.DTVT

Worlds - The Fifth Wheel (6.5)

Comes in with an interesting mystical-like sound to begin which I thought was neat and then picks up. Actually reminds me of 80's prog style, almost Queensryche-esque. Musically lots going on underneath through the course of the song and it works.

Current standings after Round 4:

1.Big Hath: (8.0)
2.Ulitmetalhead: (7.5)
3.jingle.boy: (7.0)
4.Dr. DTVT: (6.5)
5.Evermind: (6.5)
6.Nekov: (6.5)
7.lonestar: (6.0)
8.senecadawg2: (5.5)

Thanks a lot guys for that compliment. That's definitely been my intention. To be fair several other roulettes (especially Seneca's as a recent example) really have done nice in depth write-ups on the songs. I try to just focus on scoring the tunes and enjoying the material you all are sending. As I mentioned before, if anyone has questions afterwards about the song they submitted that I didn't really cover by all means bring it up and maybe I can help. As you guys noted, the contestants here have certainly been on the ball to help keep it rolling. Thanks for that  :tup

Yeah, I've wanted to speak on the scoring a little more. I tend to be a person who enjoys a lot of different music types and it's hard to score real low based on style of music. At the same time I want you all to be able to really tell and be rewarded when you blow my socks off with a song. Like I've said you all haven't sent a "bad" song as of yet and I don't see that coming. Mostly I'm enjoying all the goodness and anticipating the songs that knock it out of the park with me.

Round 5: 90's-10's

Woooooo!!! After the last round where scores dipped a little you guys all roared back in a big way. I've been jamming pretty good the past few days with these songs. Some higher scores for some really nice songs. Good job!

Evermind

Seventh Wonder - The Black Parade (7.5)

Instant headbang! Very nice start and strong vocals. Really like the atmospheric keys and the guitar playing here is quite nice all over.

Nekov

The Pineapple Thief - 3000 Days (8.0)

BAM! Easily grabbed me with the beginning of the song. It's such a strong entrance that vocally it's a bit hard for the singer to really fill in over the music but maybe that comes with listening to the band more? Regardless I'm loving this musically, very powerful and a bit off-kilter at times which keeps me interested.

senecadawg2

Agalloch - Limbs (7.5)

Powerful, slow building song. Strangely (to me) combines Post Rock, Folk Metal, Black Metal sounds which is pretty cool. Like most metal bands of this nature I REALLY dig them musically, but I struggle coming around to the vocals. If it was used to accentuate a particular part of the song I think I'd be more accepting. Still a strong tune.

Big Hath

Karnivool - Themata (8.0)

Absolutely feeling the riffs and groove in the song and definitely get the Tool vibe because of that. I'm sure it's just in the interest of giving the song a different feel, but I like the vocals much better when he's singing instead of almost rapping the lyrics out.

Dr. DTVT

IQ - The Seventh House (7.5)

Whoa 14 min song... and this one absolutely carries you on a journey. Can certainly feel the "story" of the song. I was wondering with how slow it starts out, how it would progress but it picks up and has numerous varied parts that keep it from getting too daunting at its length. Really pretty song overall with some very nice melody.

Destrage - Destroy Create Transform Sublimate (9.0)

Holy crap! The music here was just straight up killer! The vocals were so crazy but right about at my perfect growl, clean, scream ratio. Sometimes I have issue with more free-form lyrics (where not a lot rhymes) but this just works so well. There's so much here... melody, guitar, wackiness, etc. I like it! I like it!

jingle.boy

Kiss - You Wanted the Best (7.0)

Ok, clearly I'm familiar with Kiss. I'm accepting this submission because I barely had any plays on my last.fm and I haven't really heard any material from the band past "Revenge"; so for me I can accept it just to see what they've done past that album.

I don't think the harmony vocals are bad, but I think I'd have preferred to hear a newer song with just Paul or Gene taking the lead instead of so much switching off here but I get what they were going for considering the song kind of points to all of them. The music is cool but what I really like here is the guitar solo!

Ultimetalhead

Dir en Grey - Different Sense (7.5)

Ok I'll admit I was a bit hesitant with Ulti's description he gave ahead of time. I hear all the things he talked about in the song. I really enjoyed the melodies, the music and the acrobatic vocals. The craziness, music and hectic pace is similar in some aspects of the song I gave a 9.0 to above from Destrage.

The only real issues I have with the song is some of the growls are just not my thing and the fact that the song is in Japanese. So basically if I was smarter and understood the language the song would probably score much higher.

Current standings after round 5:

1.Big Hath: (8.0) + (8.0) = 16
2.lonestar: (6.0) + (9.0) = 15
3.Ultimetalhead: (7.5) + (7.5) = 15
4.Nekov: (6.5) + (8.0) = 14.5
5.Dr. DTVT: (6.5) + (7.5) = 14
6.Evermind: (6.5) + (7.5) = 14
7.jingle.boy: (7.0) + (7.0) = 14
8.senecadawg2: (5.5) + (7.5) = 13

Next up is a Free Round, so you all send some of your best as it's also an elimination round! Scores will also reset afterwards once more for the final four rounds of throwdown!

Round 6: Free Round

Sorry for the delays this week. Knew I'd be a little behind with Mother's Day festivities but then my computer crapped out on me for a couple days. Got things back rolling for the time being (crossing fingers).

Nekov

Pure Reason Revolution - The Twyncyn / Trembling Willows (8.0)

This song is really interesting. Have heard the band name before but never listened to anything from the group before. Like the building and kind of psychedelic elements early and then it breaks into the groove riff. The vocals don't really stand out a whole lot above the music but it doesn't have to.

senecadawg2

Ne Obliviscaris - Forget Not (9.0)

Stellar, beautiful intro. Just breath-taking IMO. The music throughout is so phenomenal here! This is freaking amazing. Beautiful but beastly... melodic but freaking roars! Clean vocals, growls to the back and used to emphasize. LOVE IT!

jingle.boy

Epysode - March of the Ghosts (7.5)

Certainly like the music and the almost symphonic type sound with the keys. The vocals were mostly nice throughout and the guitar solo was quality. My only real issue was it sounded a little disjointed and almost too crowded vocally?

Evermind

Intervals - The Self Surrendered (7.0)

Obviously I'm a big fan of "Djent" and bands of that nature. I've heard of Intervals before but not actually heard their music before. I enjoy the song, the music and guitars and the vocals were not bad at all. Liked when the music quieted, vocals came back in and built back up and the choral part at the end was very cool but the vocals were a little bland for me and the music was pretty much by the book djent (not a bad thing but as I said I listen to a lot of it so I prefer it to stand out a little). The end of the song was quite nice as it added something a little different.

Ultimetalhead

Dog Fashion Disco - The Hitchhiker (7.0)

I believe I've heard one tune by the band before and their unique style. I really enjoy the off-beat approach of the song. Nice groove underneath the vocal through the first part of the song. Cool elevator music breakdown :p . It was interesting, but doesn't really grab me considering the uncommon path they take. Little more passion in the song might have given me a different feeling.

Big Hath

Nightingale - Scarred For life (6.5)

Music really sounds big with the keys behind. I like the singers voice but it sounds slightly stale. Honestly it's like the song was out of a commercial. Not a bad song, It's just too safe. I keep wanting the song to not be so restrained.

Dr. DTVT

Effloresce - Zorya's Dawn (6.5)

Prefer the singer when she's not singing almost operatic. I think I've heard that style too much (maybe it's Evanescence?). The female growls are kind of cool. The music was quite good if not a little drawn out.

lonestar

Thoughts Factory - No Way Out (7.0)

Musically show off their influences like Dream Theater and company. The vocalist has a unique (to me) sound in his voice which is a positive. Neat harmony vocal parts but I don't like the spoken section here (little jarring). Some jamming riffs and like the keys.

Current standings after round 6:

1.Big Hath: (8.0) + (8.0) + (6.5) = 22.5
2.Nekov: (6.5) + (8.0) + (8.0) = 22.5
3.lonestar: (6.0) + (9.0) + (7.0) = 22
4.senecadawg2: (5.5) + (7.5) + (9.0) = 22
5.Ulitmetalhead: (7.5) + (7.5) + (7.0) = 22
6.jingle.boy: (7.0) + (7.0) + (7.5) = 21.5
=============
7.Evermind: (6.5) + (7.5) + (7.0) = 21
8.Dr. DTVT: (6.5) + (7.5) + (6.5) = 20.5

With this round's conclusion we have to say goodbye to two more participants. It was an exceptionally tight competition through this set (as I assumed it would be) with some great song choices by pretty much everyone. As you can see the scores were only 2 total points different from top to bottom overall, although I'm not sure that's much to console the eliminated parties. Thanks so much to Evermind and Dr. DTVT for participating and sending some awesome musical selections! :tup

With the last elimination round complete we move to the finals and scores reset so come out swinging hard fella's!

Round 7 is one more time in the 60's-80's! Find me some good stuff I missed from back when!

thanks! I honestly thought that I was going to be eliminated. I sent one of the most potent songs in my arsenal because I didn't have a choice, normally I would have liked to save that one until later (especially since the sores reset). I'm glad that it panned out.

Now back to the 60s-80s- same old spot that got me into that hole to begin with.  :-\ I'll send shortly.

I liked the vocals too! I meant more in the production of the song, it seemed they were set back a little and the music stood out more for me.

Round 7: 60's-80's

jingle.boy

Max Webster - Battle Scar (8.5)

Hehe, kind of cheating here with the Rush combo song (jk). Man this is a nice, nice powerful grooving song. I never was aware of this tune or the grouping for this album. I'm not sure it will help me find a new artist to get into but it definitely scores as a song with me. Good selection!

senecadawg2

The Cure - Pictures of You (7.0)

I've heard songs from The Cure before and it's not really my favorite style. Given that I wasn't sure what I'd get from this song. I like the musical melody through the whole song. It's got a simple but magical quality about it. The vocals weren't as dramatic as I remember some of the songs I've heard from the band.

lonestar

Montrose - Space Station #5 (7.5)

I've meant to listen to some of the music from this band for a long time and glad to have it sent as an submission. Interesting intro before a roaring, rocking band entrance. Lots of straight up 70's hard rock here but theres some other elements that give it a bit more depth. I like some of Hagar's work through the years but I imagine if he could have held it together with this band, they would have done some more great music down the line.

Nekov

Eloy - The midnight flight/The Victory of mental force (6.5)

Dig the really heavy 70's prog sound. The vocals definitely would have to grow on me some over time but it fits the music. For the song to be eight minutes long it really moves. The dry sounding mix of the song is kind of cool (very 70's).

Big Hath

Pentagram - Sign of the Wolf (6.5)

I'm not a huge fan of the production here and the vocals in this song feel a little flat but I get thats the style. The riffs are nice and I can hear the influence that this band may have had on numerous metal bands throughout the 80's and 90's.

Ulitmetalhead

Frank Zappa - Peaches En Regalia (8.0)

The limited songs I have heard from Zappa have been quite interesting and marvelous. Honestly there are some songs I just have a hard time getting past some of the cheesiness but I think most realize his musical genius. Having not really heard this song before I was curious as to what path he would take as you can never be sure with Frank... Another song that it's almost hard to believe was released in the 60's. I know it's '69 but it sounds and feels so ahead of it's time for that era. Really nice instrumental effort from Zappa and his crew.

Current standings after round 7:

1.jingle.boy: (8.5)
2.Ulitmetalhead: (8.0)
3.lonestar: (7.5)
4.senecadawg2: (7.0)
5.Big Hath: (6.5)
6.Nekov: (6.5)

Very sorry folks... computer issues once more and have solved it this time with a new setup! I was jumping on the other day with a relatives system but didn't have time to pull together a write-up unfortunately and thought I posted something about it in here. I apologize for the hiccup but will squeeze out these final few rounds in no time!

Round 8: 90's-10's

It's been a tough round to judge because basically everyone really sent some awesome stuff! After you guys see the scores I'm gonna hear "Are you serious?!?".. :P

Nekov

Von Hertzen Brothers - Insomniac (8.0)

Really like the style of the band and the approach feels like something I would love. The song doesn't really feel like it stretches out as much as the band sounds it's capable of which isn't a knock so much as a compliment of the band. I really do like the song but I feel like I like the sound of the band even more.

Big Hath

Opeth - Bleak (8.0)

I've been waiting for someone to send me some Opeth. This is a band that as often as they are discussed in such high regard I've felt I should eventually come to at some point. The growls will be an issue for me. I just have a hard time with growls as a constant vocal style instead of more of an accent. The music is superb as I knew it would be and the growls don't make me want to immediately cut it off, but I keep thinking how great the music would be if it wasn't full on growl for minutes at a time. The clean vocal section was very, very nice. I will be looking to dig into the band more.

Ulitmetalhead

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Sleep Is Wrong (8.0)

I expected a little quirkiness with a band name like Sleepytime Gorilla Museum... and I certainly got that and more here. Very interesting musical approach. I really like the uniqueness of it but it seems focused on being unique instead of the catchiness of the song but it works

lonestar

The Hive-Mind - Sparks (8.0)

Very nice modern, progressive and jazzy sound in this track. I love the use of the piano throughout of course. Does the band have a vocalist or are they purely an instrumental band? I really think I would enjoy this bands material and I'll have to check it out.

senecadawg2

The Contortionist - Exoplanet (8.0)

I've been meaning to check into this band for a while. Immediately struck by the melodic aspect before the growls kind of tear into the song. Like that it's kind of a journey instead of just being beat over the head with growls cause they somewhat take over but then the beautiful arrangements throughout bring it into focus.

jingle.boy

Star One - Master of Darkness (8.0)

Yet another band I've meant to listen to. Love the heavy but melodic quality here and obviously the prog sound as well. Listening to the lyrics I see why you asked the questions about movies but can't say I'm certain as to how it works in a song. The guitar is quite nice and I really like the concept musically overall. I think I would enjoy more from this group.

**** SIDE NOTE****

Wanted to say that the reason the scores were like they are is because it seems everyone is right on the path to exactly the things I like now. There were only minor gripes on my part as to why the selections didn't score even higher. Just wanted to express that much to you all.

Current standings after round 8:

1.jingle.boy: (8.5) + (8.0) = 16.5
2.Ulitmetalhead: (8.0) + (8.0) = 16
3.lonestar: (7.5) + (8.0) = 15.5
4.senecadawg2: (7.0) + (8.0) = 15
5.Big Hath: (6.5) + (8.0) = 14.5
6.Nekov: (6.5) + (8.0) = 14.5

Round 9 and the first mystery theme round will be.....

Now to throw everyone for a loop... I grew up with parents who listened to R&B, Soul, and even beach music (not beach boys) along with my Dad being a prog, heavy music fan. I have a part of me that absolutely loves those styles but I'm usually very picky about it. I would love for a great R&B, Soul, Funk, etc. selection in this round. Due to the fact that I know some may not listen to a lot of that, I'll even accept songs tinged with some GREAT GROOVE from other music genres.

Lol, we were getting ready to boycott your roulette  :P

And crap, I already had something in mind and this theme just ruins everything for me, I'm sure I'll get a low score

Inb4 Chad complains about the theme too

He's alive!!! yay! The wait itself wasn't necessarily so bad, especially considering how fast the first few rounds flew by, I was just worried that the roulette was never going to get a proper conclusion.

I'm glad you enjoyed my submission, and everyone else's too!  :lol

I don't know a thing about grooves, so this will be fun

Inb4 Chad complains about the theme too

No complaint about the theme itself, just that I now have less than 24 hours to try and figure this out from a very limited set of tunes.  Well, I can always find something 'funky', and know a default song that I can go to.

How about something that would be considered more 'jazzy' if I find myself in a bind?  Would that suffice?

Seeing the theme for round 9, I'm kinda glad I've got eliminated.  :D

You described my feelings about growly Opeth pretty much spot on. I've bought all their albums because the music is so great, and I keep spinning them sometimes, but Damnation and Heritage are the ones I spin the most. Just can't get into all the growls.

Round 9: R&B, Soul, Funk, Something that GROOVES!

Should have figured most would go the R&B path but that's not bad at all. I was wondering if anyone would step out with some funk, soul etc. Fun round!

jingle.boy

Gary Moore - Still got the Blues (8.0)

Certainly quite familiar with Gary Moore from his excellent work in Thin Lizzy. I've long meant to dive into his solo work. This is really exactly what I'd expect from him. The vocals are subdued as they are not really the focal point of the music... it's the guitar we all know we're here for! The song writing itself though is really nice. Fits in the rhythm and BLUES theme area of the round.

Ultimetalhead

Sigh - Ecstatic Transformation (7.5)

At first from the initial description from Ulti "funky Japanese avant-garde black metal" I was kind of skeptical to say the least. It turns out that there is some nice groove intertwined with the avant-garde and black metal styles. You'd never guess but to me, it's quite catchy as well. The vocals at length aren't necessarily great for me but the song's fun nature keeps me from focusing on that much. I really enjoy the quality surprise here.

Nekov

Sting - Heavy Cloud No Rain (7.0)

There's some modern jazzy, blues feel here so it fits. I like the music here and I get the idea for the story in the song but it's a little off-kilter feeling to me. The song doesn't have a feel of taking itself very seriously but I guess it doesn't have to. It's sort of being metaphorical and symbolic in a silly way.

senecadawg2

Gotye - Don't Worry, We'll Be Watching You (8.0)

I've been interested in digging into the catalog of Gotye. This song has some nice R&B elements obviously in a more pop, triphop, electronic tinged way. Very laid back throughout but it should be with that smooth slow bassline behind. Feel like it's past time I look further into this artist.

Big Hath

Graham Central Station - The Jam (8.0)

This was more of the style I kind of expected to have sent (that's not a knock on the other submissions). I really enjoy this musical selection... I know you told me to mostly ignore the lyrical aspect as it's just them introducing and being sily, but I kind of like it as a mood setter for the song too.

lonestar

Robin Trower - The Turning (8.0)

I am familiar with some of his "Bridge of Sighs" work which I really liked but haven't listened to anything outside of that. This is really nice! Much like the Gary Moore selection above, the vocals aren't really the focus.. that rich guitar sound is and I love guitar!

Current standings after round 9:
1.jingle.boy: (8.5) + (8.0) + (8.0) = 24.5
2.lonestar: (7.5) + (8.0) + (8.0) = 23.5
3.Ulitmetalhead: (8.0) + (8.0) + (7.5) = 23.5
4.senecadawg2: (7.0) + (8.0) + (8.0) = 23
5.Big Hath: (6.5) + (8.0) + (8.0) = 22.5
6.Nekov: (6.5) + (8.0) + (7.5) = 22

Round 10 - FINAL ROUND: One of the most important aspects for me from a band or musician is being varied while maintaining their unique sound. I love bands that stretch the boundaries of the genre that they are a main part of. Send me two really good songs from an awesome band (not already listed) that are in different spectrum's of their genres.

Everyone is within range of taking it all! Good music throughout but send me your best shots here!  :tup

Just out of curiosity, and I doubt it will really make a difference in the final round, but didn't everyone score 8's in the last round…? Also, glad you enjoyed the Gotye track. I wasn't sure how it would be received, given that it's a relatively simple and repetitive song.

Now for the final round. I'll need to think on this one…

Yep in round 8 everyone scored 8's. I feel like this is a result of everyone keying in more to my likes.

It's gotten better and better from round to round as I would expect.  I want people to take their time with the final round if they want (obviously not too long but you get the idea) as everyone is in this and will have a shot.

Round 10: FINAL ROUND - 2 songs from a band that show off different spectrum's or styles.

First, I'd like to thank everyone for participating and being so great about the timing and scoring and the competition of it all around. This forum is so great and I'm very thankful to you guys for some awesome new musical discoveries!

Ultimetalhead

maudlin of the Well

"They Aren't All Beautiful" (7.5)

Have to say the vocals were a little startling lol. Maybe I'll fully come around to growls one day! I like the staggered riffs and the passionate nature of the song. The nice little groove breakdown near the end complete with horns was exceptionally cool.

"Geography" (8.0)

And then this song starts with almost placid clean vocals and acoustics...keep waiting for the explosion (will it come?). The nice melody in the acoustic guitar carries the song a little better than the vocal but the vocal isn't bad. The song has a slight unsettling nature underneath it's calm.

Nekov

Frost*

"Hyperventilate" (8.5)

Begins sort of like some later Pink Floyd material with the sullen but beautiful keys/piano and then wham! The way the song builds and all the instrumentation really hits all the right spots for me. Becomes quite orchestral towards the end, reminds me of some Steve Vai material actually and of course Dream Theater in ways. Superb instrumental piece!

"Welcome to nowhere" (9.0)

Piano/keys intro again but this time with some electronica feel. Interesting vocal effect at the beginning. Another hammer to the face moment after about a minute but I love those! Sounds like there might be two singers in this song? Some nice vocal melodies here. Like the many different qualities this song has. For me this song has just something magical about it that really reaches so many of the things I enjoy about music at the moment. Quite impressed with this band!

Big Hath

The Sword

"Cloak of Feathers" (8.0)

This is a band I've intended for a while to try and get into. Obviously love their sound being a big Sabbath, Zep fan and they carry that torch well. This is right in my wheelhouse.

"The Chronomancer I: Hubris" (8.0)

Really love the incorporation of the massive riffs and grooves, I think both you and I are fans of that. Musically this is just awesome stuff. Vocally could stand out a little more or they could stretch the musical approach some (sort of like how Mastodon progs it up a little) but staying true to who they are, they really have a killer sound!

senecadawg2

Sigur Ros

"Hoppípolla" (7.5)

Really do get the uplifting vibe from this song. The piano and orchestration are quite pretty and as it builds it definitely carries you upward. Although I don't understand the vocals they are nice and set the mood for the song, as if you can hear a smile in them.

"Untitled 8" (8.0)

The slow slightly howling entrance here gives a chill. From the start it does give the impression of a cold barren surrounding. They do a very good job of establishing a feel with all the aspects of their music. I can almost picture someone mentally falling apart here (could just be me lol).  This band creates some excellent mood music.

jingle.boy

Frameshift

"Human Grain" (7.5)

Very shocked right away to hear Sebastian Bach singing here. Never really placed him singing prog-type music, not that he couldn't handle it clearly. He stretches out in front of the music here very well. The lyrical story is very interesting and I'll have to check out the theme of perspectives on violence. The song is a fairly straight forward prog-metal sounding song.

"La mer" (8.0)

Ok what is it with Bach and LaBrie? LOL! Very interesting they've worked in similar projects considering they don't really seem the same style although both are great vocal talents. Definitely a LaBrie ballad. His voice sounds really good here. I guess musically it's a little more restrained than work with Dream Theater but the piano sells it well with me of course.

lonestar

Karnya

"A Paraphreniac Menticide" (7.0)

I can tell from this piece that this band is a really high quality prog band. Musically they have great players and a strong vocalist. Some of the newer prog bands sometimes struggle to find a center and meander a bit while showing off their chops and I kind of get that vibe here. I feel like a little more focus could have strengthened the tune.

" Where the Silence Remains..." (8.0)

Like the immediate emotional feel from the vocal here and then the nice keys/synths intro. This song really carries me with the keys and guitar. This song just felt more passionate throughout and that always wins with me. That's not to say the previous tune didn't have it maybe this one just spoke to me more. Regardless, my interest turned up a great deal after hearing this. Nice one!

FINAL Standings:

1.jingle.boy: (8.5) + (8.0) + (8.0) + (7.5) + (8.0) = 40
1..Nekov: (6.5) + (8.0) + (7.5) + (8.5) + (9.0) = 39.5

2.Ulitmetalhead: (8.0) + (8.0) + (7.5) + (7.5) + (8.0) = 39

3.Big Hath: (6.5) + (8.0) + (8.0) + (8.0) + (8.0) = 38.5
3.lonestar: (7.5) + (8.0) + (8.0) + (7.0) + (8.0) = 38.5
3.senecadawg2: (7.0) + (8.0) + (8.0) + (7.5) + (8.0) = 38.5

(please check my scoring and math!)

Most sincere apologies for errors. Only thing worse than my math skills seems to be copy and pasting which caused my final scores to be loopy.

So.... Nekov absolutely roars back just a little short with a great band submission at the end. jingle.boy really brought it in the finals with strong selections through the 4 final rounds for the win.

I'm glad to have made it past all the eliminations, especially considering my collection of 60s-80s music is so damn small and I was competing against fogeys with much more sizeable collections. Congrats jingle.boy!

Quality roulette man, glad to be a part of it. Very pleased with my finish considering all my submissions were gut instinct and totally sent on the fly. Thanks for putting up with my brevity.

Chad- congrats, and suck it man.

Again, my apologies for the errors... my mind has been in a million places recently and the only escape has been the wonderful music you guys have sent. Everyone really sent something that I have loved or will definitely be digging deeper into in the months to come. I was most certainly the winner in that way. Thanks so very much everyone!

Going even further on scoring, I got a 7 a couple rounds back, not a 7.5 so Chad's victory is a bit more ample.

Chad, not getting any compliments from me on this one, I'm a sore loser.

I like my victories 'ample'.   ;D

No worries, I'm a terrible winner!

I've lulled you all into a false sense of security with my last place finishes. Now, you're all playing for second place, bitches!

Guess I should thank WR for the format of this roulette too, otherwise I'd have finished middle of the pack.
