Thanks to wolfking, I just started listening to them. I'm loving what I'm hearing so far. I feel like I hear some old Amorphis influence, among other things.
Insomnium, Omnium Gatherum..............what's up next? Trivium?
I'm working my way backwards and so far have gotten really familiar with the last two, Shadows of a Dying Sun and One For Sorrow. One For Sorrow is my fav from the two, Through the Shadows is one of the greatest songs I've heard in a while.
I just started listening to Across the Dark today and it could be better again.
First trailer for Winter's Gate is out.

Yeah. Anyone who is into extreme forms of metal around here should check out Winter's Gate. It's getting considerable acclaim right now.

Winter's Gate is pretty great. Wouldn't call it a masterpiece though. Maybe after a few more listens.
I think it's something you have to be in the mood for.
I think it's something you have to be in the mood for.
Doesn't apply to me by any means ;) On a couple of occasions it's the darkest and most brutal music they have ever released so that can play a part, on top of the obvious fact it's a 40 minute song. It has a few dynamically recurring themes and I knew to expect that kind of stuff, but it may not be as obvious to some other listeners. I certainly wouldn't consider it something to play in the car on initial listening, and it may be a "wintry" album for some.

Yeah, it's cool indeed, but I'm not getting the masterpiece status either just yet. I'm finding it quite hard to get into if I'm going to be perfectly honest. I think it's something you have to be in the mood for.
Why hasn't no one told me about this band before?
Why hasn't no one told me about this band before?
They seem really underrated and definitely not talked about as much as they should.
What would be the next record I should check out?
Yet another band I stumbled upon on Spotify and now i've ordered Shadow of a dying Sun. :tup
Yea will definitely check out their disco, thought I would start with SoadS since that's the album that got me hooked. :)Yet another band I stumbled upon on Spotify and now i've ordered Shadow of a dying Sun. :tup
My favs are One for Sorrow and Across the Dark. Shadows is awesome though.
I came to know them with Winter's Gate which is still a great record. Then I bought One For Sorrow and I like it a lot. Next up is Shadows. This band seems to be right up my alley.

So far I'm slightly disappointed to be honest, an Insomnium album is usually more captivating than this already after a couple of listens. Jani's vocals don't mix in "And Bells They Toll", and it feels like Markus pulled the wrong kind of "Insomnium Gatherum" with The Offering. So far it's "ok good".I'm loving it so far. Incredibly melodic which is my favourite side of their music, and the sound is probably the best they've ever produced.
This already could become my fav album from them, it's amazing. The melodies all over this are incredible. The title track though makes me laugh as it's Weighed Down With Sorrow 2 really. But so fucking emotional and epic.
I still haven't listened to these guys, I'll check it out.
Listened alot to the new album in my car recently, I can't say it's grabbing me like previous albums but it's cool, still a great album though. I honestly think Pale Morning Star is my favourite track on the album.
... I can't say it's grabbing me like previous albums ...
Yea that's good stuff. Having a supporting guitar melody contrasting the harsh vocals is a simple idea yet Insomnium does it so well one could call it genious how effective it really is. After seeing a bunch of reaction videos for Insomnium alot of them seems to really be intrigued by that.Listened alot to the new album in my car recently, I can't say it's grabbing me like previous albums but it's cool, still a great album though. The guitar melody around the 3:30 mark is just so beautiful and emotional I could cry.
That and streaming services paying fractions of cents per play (which they still split with the record company).
... I can't say it's grabbing me like previous albums ...
That's where I am at the moment. I've shelved it for now and I'm a little bit disappointed, especially the first half doesn't grab me. It gets better towards the end but not enough to excite me.
I may do an Insomnium deep dive after the Riot Thread is over.
Heart Like a Grave re-entered the Finnish physical albums chart at #3. Great response of support for their financial troubles.
Apparently we're getting a new song tomorrow...
Well here it is for those who are in Friday already: The Conjurer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oH3hs6Fuwwc)
Almost a power ballad by melodeath standards.
:o :metalI see your :metal and raise you :2metal:
Absolutely beautiful song. I adore this side of their music so much.
I hope this means a new album is on the way, even though it doesn't seem like very long ago since Heart Like a Grave came out.
Another new song, The Reticent (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4HBEQRX4Cw)
It's a fairly mellow number once again, written by Friman this time.
+ I've been looking for band that would generate the same feeling/vibe but it's hard to find. Glow by Countless Skies and Despartire by Cloud (slower and more doom but still great melodies and emotion) worked for me but other than that not much. Feel free to recommend some more! It's surpringly hard - Insomnium aren't exactly unique stylistically speaking, but there's something really special about how they craft their songs with such beautiful melancholy that no other similar bands quite compare.

Another band that comes to mind that I love for similar reasons is Enshine. Their two full lengths are definitely worth a listen. I'll have a think about whether there are any others.
In Mourning - especially their last couple of albums.

Yeah Enshine are great and the various offshoot bands/projects that it has produced.
Go back even further to Finnish band Rapture (active 1999 - 2005) who made three thoroughly depressing brilliant albums in that same sort of style.
Yeah Omnium Gatherum have their moments for sure, and of course are a sister band to Insomnium. But definitely not as rich and melancholic in their sound.
and hopefully the mighty Atoma will finally release their second album this year.

A couple of other bands that have similarities, maybe slightly on the heavier/darker side:
In Mourning - especially their last couple of albums.
Shylmagoghnar - especially their album Transience. Not as consistently "pretty" as Insomnium, but has some grand and really beautiful stuff.

+1 for Enshine
Also agreed on Countless Skies...
Insomnium's first couple of albums had some influence from Amorphis' Tales from the Thousand Lake album, I think. That's a top, top album for me, so if you haven't heard it yet, definitely check it out.
Omnium Gatherum's New World Shadows too...they are more on the death metal end of the "melodic death metal" genre, but they do have that melancholic streak that makes them not too dissimilar in mood. I wouldn't say that of all of their albums, but...Shadows kind of fits that mold. Plus, it's excellent, so it doesn't hurt ;)
Another band from Finland that really nails a similar, melancholic mood is the now-defunct Rapture. They have three full-lengths, Futile, Songs for the Withering and Silent Stage. All very, very good. The debut is maybe more in the vein of early Katatonia (think Brave Murder Day). Some former members have come back as Counting Hours. They released an album in 2020, The Will, and that's great as well.
I'm a sucker for this kind of sound, so I'll think a bit more on it...

True, but Beyond and New World Shadows are incredible.
I met these guys at a Lacuna Coil and Epica show back in 2017.
A group of fans (most of which were shitfaced drunk) stopped and wanted to take pictures with them, so I stepped aside. As I did, one of the women in the group said "no, no, no, I want *all* of you in the picture with us!!", then yanked me into the shot. I told her I wasn't in the band, and the Insomnium guys confirmed it. After that, she said "well, then you must be in Epica". I told her I wasn't, but she insisted I had to be, and wanted me to add her on Facebook, so I did.
She's still on my Facebook today, and for all I know, she might still believe I'm a member of Epica.

One of those rare occasions where I would call an Insomnium song straight up boring, unfortunately.
Lots of new music today!
The Witch Hunter (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyXHvjS_8d8)
EDIT: Back to the usual quality, with some nice changing time signatures towards the end!
Can't stop listening to Anno 1696, this band has everything. So much emotions cramed into one album it's haunting, aggressive, beautiful, atmospheric, sad and powerful.

Really nice album.
Yeah, that's from the bonus EP that is tagged with some editions of the new album. The three songs are a little bit different but are really nice.
Many of you have been asking where Jani Liimatainen is and why there has been no update about his status in the band. The answer is weirdly simple: For a long time we didn’t know where he was and we could not reach him by any means.
The reason why we did not address this situation publicly was that we hadn’t given up hope yet. Obviously, Jani has been a close friend and much-valued member of this band for years. We wanted to allow him to either solve the situation or at least provide a statement to his fans.
Sadly it is now evident that Jani and the rest of Insomnium have different priorities. We have hence agreed to go separate ways and Insomnium will continue as a 4-piece unit from here on.
This will not affect any of the forthcoming live shows: Ville Friman will be joining for the Finnish shows, Brandon Ellis (The Black Dahlia Murder) and Nick Cordle (Omnium Gatherum) have agreed to fill in the second guitar during the forthcoming North American tour.
We wish Jani all the best in the future and want to thank him for the past years spent with Insomnium.
