Title: Presenting Obfuscation's Most Awesome or Most Disappointing Song Roulette Ever
Post by: Obfuscation on February 26, 2014, 07:45:27 PM
Okay guys, so its the most popular user on DTF.org's :\ turn to do his second roulette. Will it be a success or a disaster? Will be worth our time or waste of our time? Who gives a shit and lets just get this started already.

So whoever ends up participating probably won't know me too well since I disappear for some time form here cause of other time consuming things and then just reappear and drop in uninvited to do things like this. With that point, I hope people will still want to play in this and help me discover music. To help you with your choices, I will be posting a banned band's list of course and the link to my first roulette so you can skim through and get an idea of what I like or how it went last time. I'm too proud of how I ran it last time so hope to host this one better.

Song Roulette v1: https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=27848.0

Differences between this roulette and my last one is that I will use a rating score of 1-10 instead(and tally up the points more carefully as well  ;D).

How many people I would like to participate?  I'm not sure yet(if anybody even wants to be in this one) but anything from 1-10 is good for me and for the sake of this thing moving at a good pace.
How many rounds will this be? No exact number yet but probably between 5 or 7. All I know so far is that the first and last round will be open so that way we can see how you change in how you choose what to send during the time of this roulette. Unless any of you have a better idea for a last round, I'm all ears.
Send your choices through either PM's or email, whichever is easier for you, and send me links of either youtube(so I can know what song it is in case I get it someway else)or spotify.
Yeah so I wrote way more than I should or thought I would but lets get started and see who wants in on this.  :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal

Yo so I think I will just keep the number of participants at 8. I believe that's a good number of participants and should allow me to give a good amount of time to each song I get from each person. So far I get 6 people to sent me theirs already. Only Lucien and adace left. Meanwhile I've been already jamming out to some of the songs sent.   :metal

Quick question for feedback or suggestions. What do you guys think of a round where it would be like a group round I guess you can call it where we split some of you guys into groups and between you guys, you choose what to send me for that round. It would be more than 1 song per group of course and the rest of the details can be worked. Just let me know what you think. Whether you like it or hate it or think its stupid, just tell me. Trying to come up with an interesting round idea is all.

It would work if the pairs know each other well and have similar tastes in music so they could quickly come to a consensus.  But it would essentially be one person picking a song and the other person going along with it, even if the second person really likes the song because while it is possible, two people picking the same song on the first try would be rare.

I personally don't like the idea of pairs/teams. But it's your roulette, and I'd be happy to go along with it.

The more basic something is, the more I'll probably like it. I generally prefer just sending a song, getting a score, rinse and repeat.

Like the others said, though, it's your roulette. You can do what you want, and I can roll with it.

After further review, the call on the field is I won't do it. I was just wasting time trying to come up with a fun round idea and to make this more competitive for no reason but didn't think it thoroughly enough and that's why I asked for your opinion.

A good pairs idea is that (as Doc mentioned), for people with relatively similar tastes, one person picks the band, the other person picks the song.

That is a good idea but not sure how the rest of the participants feel about it.

Also the results should be up later today. Just need to give a couple of songs more listens. To keep this rolling though, you can send me your round 2 songs. For round 2, I want to learn more about you guys so send me your favorite song. It can be of either all time or the one you've been enjoying the most lately.

Okay so this round was great all around and you guys did a great job. I will post the results here in the order I received them instead of highest to lowest or vice versa. If the scores keep on being like this in all the rounds, seems like we will have a tight race until the finish line.  :tup

Sorry for any grammatical mistakes in advance.

lonestar - Intervals: The Self Surrendered

This song started firing off right away and making me headbang to it and I continued for the first 3 minutes or so. The guitars, well pretty much everything instrumental, in this song was really kickass and reminded me a bit of Periphery in their last album. I would say the weak link in this which surprised me after I found out who it was, is the vocalist. He isn't bad but I felt for some reason he brought this song down a notch and I felt like listening to the instrumental version instead at time. Also another con for it was the length because towards the end, it started to feel like it dragged a bit but that's maybe because the 2nd half of the song felt a bit like from other songs I heard and wasn't on par with the 1st half of the song. Score: 8/10

Shadow Ninja 2.0 - Dan Swanö/ Uncreation

I've listened to this guy in other projects before. Mostly Bloodbath and never his solo work. I have to say I really like how he keeps this song heavy with the guitar riff and drum rhythms used and decent vocals while using, in my opinion, a happy keyboard song or something you would hear in an uplifting song. I wouldn't consider this a uplifting song though neither a debbie downer of a song either. Also this song really reminded me of a snog that I've enjoyed lately of a new release because of how similar I thought certain moments sounded like. https://youtu.be/pF_42zfAEOM?t=25s and  https://youtu.be/aZPipw548tU?t=2m8s are what I think sound familiar and I really like those moments. Its the rhythem the drums play and I guess I just like it and like playing it to since I'm a drummer. Maybe its just me that hears that similarity. Song has a great guitar solo as well. Score: 8/10

Ben_Jamin - Armin Van Buuren: Beautiful Life

I wasn't expecting this in a open round and in the first round too but got nothing against it since I like music like this too especially when done right like this was. It has a simple beat to it that is good for making you feel like dancing to it with a just a small amount of effects used to add a bit of variety to the song which is better than want some people do nowadays with a bunch of overkill added to the song. The singer in the song has a really good voice too though not the best I've heard in a song like this but her's works in this song. Only thing is for some reason I don't find myself listening to this song that much later on but I am be wrong and I feel like its because I'll get tired of it quickly since it sorta repeats itself 3 times in one play. But that's just me. Score 7/10

Dark Castle - Allegaeon: Behold(God I Am)

Okay, so this song starts off with some nice soft guitars with a nice melody and I thought ok, this song has a good intro so what's next? Then came the in your face drums blasting away letting you know to prepare yourself for the rest of the song. Then the song starts kicking some serious ass with its cool guitar riff(and great guitar tone as well I must say), good vocalist, and good drumming. It has a number of guitar solos but I wouldn't say that I went crazy for any of them. They were just okay. Also it keeps a good pace throughout its 7 minutes and I liked the ending which I thought was strong and liked it more than the Intervals one(sorry lonestar). Score: 9/10

senecadawg2 - Dir en Grey: Vinushka

Man did you get lucky with this pick. Reason why is because I know of this band but never checked them out enough and this was probably the 1st song I heard from them but that was more than 5 years ago??? and didn't remember it. Why I didn't I have no idea because this song is amazing. Maybe I still had bad taste in music at that time. In 9 minutes, this song manages to explore and play a whole range of atmospheres and ideas and mix them up to create this masterpiece which is a word I rarely use on anything. Like I mentioned before, the atmosphere this song starts off with I really like with the great guitar riffs and nice drum work. The singer has a great vocal range which goes every single change that happens in the 9 minutes. I would to describe it differently, I would say its like a story told in 9 minutes from beginning to end with all the different steps a movie takes like the introduction, the conflict, the climax, the falling action, and then the end with it firing off on all cylinders. Score: 10/10

Dr. DTVT - Spiral Architect: Spinning

I have never really listened to music of this type with clean vocals which is a refreshing take on it especially when the singer is pretty good too. THAT BASS LINE and upfrontness(not even a word) of it is what I like to hear sometimes especially from bands like these. One thing I would like to change of this song is its length since it felt somewhat short(remind you of anything Doc?)and that's probably because of the flying fingers and riffs moments in the song. I know this music is about this and all but there were moments were I felt like it changed time sigs or whatever too often but that's probably just me and weird feelings I get from some songs cause once I found myself rocking out to a part of the song, BOOM it would change besides the ending which doesn't do and like it for that. Score: 8.5/10

adace - Ihsahn: The Paranoid

Only Ihsahn work I have really listened to before is Emperor's last album which I like. I had heard his solo work was quite a bit different from it but maybe this song is one of the few that isn't though it does have a different feeling from his Emperor work. I like how this song pretty much just hits it off right away and everything is just working and fitting together perfectly. The when it changes to the chorus, its still rocking albeit in a different way but it still manages to work with the rest of the song. It gets even more intense as it goes on which is always welcome in my book. The huge sounding ending with the trumpets and all is awesome too. Score: 9/10

Lucien - Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony 5 Mvt. 4

Along with Ben_Jamin's pick, this was different in a big way from everything else which is cool. Maybe my banned bands list didn't show but I'm a fan of classical music too but not all cause some honestly bore me. This one is not one of those boring ones. Maybe because of its mostly fast pace(also what's up with those youtube comments on the video I saw saying its too slow, goddamn son of a bitch sounds fast to me and would sound too crazy if done faster. Maybe I just need to hear whichever version they're talking about.)that leads to its quieter section which sounds like it could be put into the soundtrack of an epic movie. Preferably a fantasy one. Also would've like to have seen one of those Looney Tunes Merrie Melodies episode, if you guys know what I'm talking about, and seen what they could have created with it since I like those. See I spent more time talking about things this could have been used in instead of the instrumental work because it caused me to come up with ideas and use some imagination which I think music like this should do and like having occur. Nice ballsy pick that paid off. Score: 9.5/10

lonestar - 8

Ben_Jamin - 7
Dark Castle - 9

Being in three roulettes is confusing. I can't remember what the heck I sent in this one. I hope it was good.

Sorry for the long wait. I hope it was worth it though for you.

Being in three roulettes is confusing. I can't remember what the heck I sent in this one. I hope it was good.

That adds a bit more of suspense for you.

So now I will finally post the results for this 2nd round though I still wish I had a bit more listening time for these songs as some were long and some need quite a number of listens to get through its layers. Still in avoidance of letting this get stale, I must move on and prevent you guys from getting mad at me. :coolio

Seems like the main subjects of my terrible write-ups this time are intros and melodies. I also like I wasn't fair enough on some songs and the scores I gave them but I couldn't help giving some of them higher scores or lower scores at this moment or else I would take longer doing this. Also I knew these your favorite songs and I didn't let you send something you think I would like. I did this to see what are the musical tastes participating in this roulette and what each of you like. Also I always like finding out about people's favorite songs so yea.  We still got more rounds to do anyway. Forgive me for any grammatical errors in them too. Didn't have time to skim them for all of them.

Shadow Ninja 2.0 - The Ocean: Abyssopelagic II: Signals of Anxiety

You know I only heard this album once so I let this submission slide but I can sorta remember hearing this song and not digging it too much. Good thing I let you use it cause now I like it much more than I first did. Maybe its the way it started off and took a bit of time to get what I consider the good part but now listening to it more, I like the beginning a lot more now too. Thought I will say this that the vocals in those part I think are the weakest link of this song. I just have a love/hate relationship with the vocals of the singer so this band. Once we get the whole band playing, it makes the melody of this song sound much nicer and the vocalist gets to shine in those parts because he fits it very good. I wish they could have done more with this song though like make it longer and explore more ideas with the main theme in it. I just feel like it doesn't do much and had the chance to do much more. Score: 8/10

lonestar - IQ: The Seventh House

At first I was expecting this to be an epic song with lots of changing moments that sound like they could be different songs just put together. Sometimes that works but lots of times it doesn't. Good thing about this song is that it plays it safe and doesn't do many drastic changes but keeps it simple compare to other long songs but it works because of how good the music written for this song is. The intro though being something like 3 minutes long, actually feel long which is good and I like it. Plus the singers voice is really good and goes well with the intro. When the whole band kicks in, the song starts kicking ass in how I guess I will say, groovy it feels. Also the instrumental section is really well done and has a great ending too. Maybe I was expecting more "technical" or "complex" sections which aren't in this song and maybe that's why I feel like its missing something but that's just my opinion and should be disregarded since I probably still need to listen to this song more since each time I listen to it, the more I like it. I also criticized this song as if it were longer than 14 minutes because what it does in 14 minutes is impressive. Score: 8.5/10

senecadawg2 - Kayo Dot: Marathon

After the great submission you sent me last round, I was really looking forward to your song for this round. Your submission was really one of the more interesting ones in how it was different from everything else. I feel like my score for this song won't be too fair since I agree that its one that takes multiple listens and I don't think I gave it enough yet. I still haven't gotten used to the intro or should I say like it too much even though I think its sets the song's mood right away which is a good thing. But the first half of the song just feels like a long intro and then when the ambient section of the songs starts, it feels like an entirely different song almost. Maybe I still haven't made the connection and need to listen to it more. Score: 6.5/10

Dark Castle - The Red Chord: Fixation on Plastics

So again you send me a song that wants to melt your face and does one does that as well. I'm going to go ahead and say I like the one you sent me in the first round more though. This one gets the ball rolling pretty much right away and tries to make me break my neck headbanging to it. With the fast pace it keeps up, a complaint I have is that it makes the song feel too short. Wish it was longer and also the ending is a bit unexpected and not sure why it finished that way since it doesn't make much sense in the context of the song. Maybe it leads to the next song but I haven't hear it yet as to just focus on this one and the rest of the songs for this round. Score: 8/10

Lucien - Rush: Clockwork Angels

Rush, familiar with them, but only a bit of their work. This song makes me want to listen to them more. Another song in which I have to point out the intro because the one for this song is great. Every instrument does a great job playing their role in it and once the guitar kicks in with the bass, it gives this huge sound which I love. Like the drum beat played and also like how Geddy sings in this song. It has some good melody in it and a good upbeat feeling to it. Pretty much the only complaint I have about it is the section after the guitar solo which I feel like it makes the song lost a bit of steam and leaving me with wanting to go back to the main melody or sound I guess I would call of the song but that's just me nitpicking and maybe it just needs to grow on me a bit more. Score: 9/10

Ben_Jamin - The Arkitecht: Face Thief

Man you didn't make this round easy for me with this 32 minute song. I'm not going to go into much detail of the song since I would probably write an essay at this rate for it to talk about various parts of it. Lets just say that besides the fact that I probably need to listen to it more, I think it has an interesting concept and so many great moments. One obvious downfall for it is not the bands fault for not being able to have a live orchestra play for them in this song with the obvious midi files but the orchestra sections are great and give this song an epic feeling throughout. It has many solid riffs and solid drumming. I think the vocalist has a bit more growing to do on me or something because I still can't dig his voice in some parts. Maybe because I'm still not too familiar with the song, yes I know its 32 minutes but at times it felt really long and daunting to keep listening to it. I've had other 30 minute songs feel quicker for me but who knows what it is. Maybe its the breaks the song takes in some parts with the choir sections even though they're good. I know for sure I will keep listening to this song though and will probably like it more with each listen. Score: 8/10

adace - Soilwork: This Momentary Bliss

So I have listened to some songs off this album, not all, and have enjoyed them so was expecting good things from this one. The vocals in this song are great and really work with the amount of clean and harsh vocals it has. The chorus is as strong or good as some other songs I've heard from the same band or album. I really like the melody the guitars start off with and the drums are badass as they always are with their drummer. I just felt it as a good song but not a great song. Score : 7/10

Dr. DTVT - Enslaved: Death In the Eyes of Dawn

Good thing you weren't able to send the first song you wanted to so you could send this one. This song is one of those you can easily lose yourself in it with the atmosphere it has with the not-exactly slow but wonderful riff that sounds I guess the only word I can come up with at this late hour is smooth with the nice volume the bass has in this song. The vocals are also great though I would like the growling to be a bit better but maybe I'm just not that used to his voice yet. I like the changes this song does throughout from the main melody of the song to a more slower kinda darker feeling part to a more heavier and faster section. It just all fits and compliments each other well. I think the acoustic guitar ending is good too but I think I prefer the song to end with the band playing it to the end but that's just because that's how much I like that riff. Score: 9/10

Seems like scores were less higher than last round and was obsessed with using the number 8 as a score this time. Got a tight race going on, just how I like it.

Scores
lonestar - 8 + 8.5 = 16.5
Shadow Ninja 2.0 - 8 + 8 = 16
Ben_Jamin - 7 + 8 = 15
Dark Castle - 9 + 8 = 17
senecadawg2 - 10 + 6.5 = 16.5
Dr. DTVT - 8.5 + 9 = 17.5
adace - 9 + 7 = 16
Lucien - 9.5 + 9 = 18.5

Round 3 theme will be to send me the most emotional song you know of. Could be either one that makes you feel really happy or really sad or both or so many different feels in it. If you think this theme sucks, LET ME KNOW YO! I WANT TO PLEASE YOU TOO! ;)

Cool, glad it struck in the right way with you. It's such a grower too, I've heard it a bajillion times, and still have days where I will listen to it multiple times in a row, the last five minutes is musical perfection for me.

Now, an emotional song, huh? Looks like you're gonna get my second favorite here...

Oh well, I guess I can't blame you given that I probably would've rated it similarly with so little time. I think it also hurts that it had to be removed from the context of the whole album. Don't worry, the next one is more simple

I knew I'd end uo hurting my score a bit due to length. I agree with you about the orchestra as well. I believe that album was made by one guy with guest vocal grunts and solos, his first album attempt, its not bad at all. You'd like the album because the rest of the songs are their own concept.

Saddest song....hmm....I'll have to dig.

Yeah that's an issue with songs like this in which you really need to give them a god number of listens and listen to the album entirely. I will listen to the album though and see how much better it works that way.

For his first album attempt and all, its freaking amazing, especially since it was mostly just one guy. I had the hardest time giving your song a score because I knew if I would listen to it more, I would like it more and give it a higher score but at the time I wasn't there yet.

I don't have any cookies sorry. Anyway here are the results. Not that great of write-ups since they were rushed due to lack of time but hopefully it at least shows what I thought of each song and each score they got.

Dark Castle - Nobel: Wild Dream

Well I certaintly didn't except this from AJ of The Human Abstract. Good thing he actually is doing something like this cause it actually is pretty good. Of course the main thing that makes this song enjoyable is that the girl has a good singing voice that matches the sound of the music. I think the real star of this song though are the strings. It just sounds beautiful and makes you feel warm and happy inside. Also talking about lack of sleep and wild dreams, which I think is she is singing about, I experience that just about every week. Score: 8/10

lonestar - Marillion: Sugar Mice

So songs like these are usually a hit or miss and thankfully this was a hit. I didn't get the urge to skip this song which I sometimes do with songs like these and I guess its because it gets right to it with Fish's vocals. Now the lyrics and story behind the song is one that I'm sure many people can relate to and its happening all the time. The vocals make this song sound personal to anybody listening to it and when the section with "'Cause I know what I feel, know what I want I know what I am, Daddy took a raincheck" it just hits you thanks to those great vocals. Score: 8/10

senecadawg2 - David Gray: Falling Free

So this time you decided to play it a bit more safe with a simpler song. I would still that's a risk cause a song has to be really good to keep the interest of somebody, espcially if they are going to listen to quite a bit. Good thing I found the piano playing nice and soothing I guess I'll say. Seeing with those first 2 write-ups, a point of emphasis for me in this round was the vocals more than usual and this guy as well has a good one. Score: 7.5/10

Shadow Ninja 2.0 - John Wesley: Thirteen Days

Another great singer in my opinion for this round and another good song. I liked the guitar playing even though it was just a circle for most of the beginning so I think it was really good the song has other instruments in it and the whole band kicks in for the awesome climax part. The song has in what I think to be some lrics that make up a really sad and dark story but which goes really good with the music. Score: 8.5/10

Ben_Jamin - Immortal Technique: You Never Know

So I know about Immortal Technique but only one of his song which everybody probably already knows which is Dance with the Devil. If you haven't, listen to it cause that song is emotional as fuck as well. Anyway moving on to this song. Thing I like about this guy is that he raps clearly and tells a story. The beat is solid and the right one for this song. Regarding the lyrics, getting to the end I knew how it would before I heard it before the way he describes everything really makes you connect with him and feel all these sad emotions for what happens which is how things should be done to make you care about it and connect with it. Score: 9.5/10

Dr. DTVT - Kevin Gilbert: Song For A Dead Friend

Now this song was really emotional regarding how sad the subject matter is. Right away with the piano playing and just how it sounds gives it that atmosphere of knowing this song really is something and sounds like you are in the room with him. When he starts singing and you listen to the lyrics, man does it touch you. I also like with this song and the Immortal Technique one, how its basically telling a story and you know what they are singing about and not having to figure out what they really mean with the lyrics of the song. Or maybe I'm just lazy tat way but I also suck at finding out song meanings sometimes. With his sincere voice and lyrics, you really feel sorry for the 2 guys involved. The one who died and the one who is dealing with the death of his friend. I just think its a song everybody should listen to, not because of its sad sound and content but because even though that's what it is, music like this is beautiful if you understand what I'm trying to say which you probably do. Score: 10/10

adace - Boards of Canada: Dayvan Cowboy

I'm going to say this was pretty different from all the other songs I got but that in no way is a bad thing. Instead of making me feel sad and all compared to the rest, the feeling for some reason I got from this song was the feeling of nostalgia. I would get the feeling of not thinking about anything else but this song while listening to it which I always like when songs do this. The song is just get throughout though I will say I wish they did a bit less of those drum effects going on but when thinking about it, it just fits. Wish it was longer though because even though its more than 4 minutes long, it feels short to me for some reason. Maybe its because of how I get into it I don't notice the time passing by. Score: 9.5/10

Yes lots of the scores are tied and close to each but all the rounds have been great so its all your fault. But anyway I'm pretty sure there won't be as many tied scores like there is right now as we move one. So for round 4 the theme will be to send me a really catchy song.
Scores
lonestar - 16.5 + 8 = 24.5
Shadow Ninja 2.0 - 16 + 8.5 = 24.5
Ben_Jamin - 15 + 9.5 = 24.5
Dark Castle - 17 + 8 = 25
senecadawg2 - 16.5 + 7.5 = 24
Dr. DTVT - 17.5 + 10 = 27.5
adace - 16 + 9.5 = 25.5
Lucien - 9.5 + 9 = 18.5

I went with options 2 & 3, with a side of "I'm submitting this band before someone else does" and a heaping dose of "I don't want to send him the same song I sent Seneca in consecutive rounds, even though it totally would have worked here".

Okay, so a quick update here for the roulette since Lucien rose up from the dead this week and I let him still be part of this roulette and send me his song for the last round and I'll go ahead and post his score for it. Don't worry Lucien, yes you sent me the song some hours ago but I've listened to it at least 5 times already in order to be fair enough with it and get a good feel for it as well.

Lucien - Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep & 358/2 Days OST: Vector to the Heavens

I'm familiar with this video game series but only because I played the first game and none after that. But I'm also a huge Final Fantasy fan which this game is related to in many ways and Square Enix always has good OST for their RPG games. I had never heard this one OST since I never played this game. The song you sent me is just piano and a string section but it sounds great. It has good melody to it and the tome of this is I think a sad one which I can picture it happening in one of the sad scenes of the game. The biggest issue I have with it though is the speed of the song. I just felt that it was too fast or had that sped up feeling to it. I wish it was slower and think it would sound better that way too. Maybe give it more of an epic feeling if you understand what I'm trying to get at. Anyway, still a great song. Score: 8/10

Hear, hear! Here are the results for this last round and let me state a few disclaimers first. Even though all of the rounds have awesome so far thanks to you guys and I've enjoyed most of the songs and all, but this round I just had more fun listening to the songs. DAT CATCHINESS!  ;D Another point is that there were a couple of songs that were sent that were just  :metal but not as catchy as the rest and as I would've liked. That's why they got lower scores than they probably would've had the theme been different. Also maybe because I have a hard time rating things, that's why usually all the ratings have been very high in every round cause it also bothers me to give low ratings but I really haven't needed to with all the songs I've gotten and have enjoyed. Anyway, enough blabbering on to the really important stuff.

Shadow Ninja 2.0 - Keldian: The Last Frontier

Right off the bat we have a great and catchy song indeed. Songs of this genre can sometimes be a hit or miss for me, but thankfully this one was a hit. I mean just everything about this song would get stuck in my head after listening to it. Of course the most catchy part was the chorus, "The storm is here, we will show no fear, we will lead the way, across the last frontier". I would sing it everything time it came up and would randomly sing it when not even listening to the song or any music. I think the vocals really helped in how they perfectly fit the song both male and female ones. Score: 10/10

senecadawg2 - Coheed and Cambria: Mother Superior

So the only experience I have had before with this band is the song everybody else has heard before which is Welcome Home. So I was looking forward to hearing how a catchy song from them would sound. The verdict is that it sounds good. I've seen people say they usually have an issue with Claudio's vocals, lucky for me that I don't and I actually really like them, especially in this song. It does have a good chorus but I wouldn't consider it to be as catchy as I would like or compared to some of the other songs I got this round. I also think it would've been somewhat more catchy if it was a tad bit shorter but that's just for the sake of being catchy, not cause of how good of a song it is. Score: 8/10

adace - Amaranthe: 1,000,000 Lightyears

Hey that guy turned into a girl in the beginning. Jokes aside I felt like this song was a good song and all but not something I would probably listen to regularly but that's not what we're judging right now. I like the sound of song and singers in it though felt the harsh ones were a bit eh(actually listening to the song while writing this I think they are better than what I make it sound like) but they fit with the song. Chorus I thought was okay and can hear and feel it being catchy but it doesn't really grab me or stick with me and just felt like it was short to help it be more catchy than it could have been.  Score: 7/10

lonestar - Destrage: Destroy Create Transform Subliminate

Hmmmmm so one of those songs I really had a hard time giving a score because of how much I liked it and thought it was good but didn't feel like it lived up to my I guess I'll call it for right now, standards of it being a catchy song. So I really like this song like I previously mentioned because of awesome musicianship and great vocals in it. Really like the guitars throughout the whole song, the playing of it and sound of them. Problem I have is how it has what I consider to be quite a number of changes in it and thinking the chorus was okay. If this was in any other round, the score would probably be higher than it is by far. Also that unexpected ending yo! Badass. Score: 8/10

Dr. DTVT - Seventh Wonder: Alley Cat

You sent one of those songs too that were really good and all but hard to give a justifiable score under the theme of this round. Seventh Wonder is a band I have heard mentioned a number of times in this forum but never checked them out. Now I know I should and will after listening to this song. I liked it and can see why many people here like this band and feel like I will too. Good singer, great musicians, and great results. Sadly though I can't score it as high as I would like because you sent it cause you found "the chorus catchy as fuck". Bad luck for you that I didn't find it catchy as you do. I thought it was good and all but something that'll stay in my head and I'll find myself singing along to whenever like I would with The Last Frontier. Score: 7.5/10

Dark Castle - Lady Gaga: Summerboy

My Lady Gaga experience so far has only been really the singles that would be heard everywhere I go when they are released. I never really tell anybody that I actually like some of them or find them to be good cause I never thought or had a reason to bring it up. Therefore I didn't know what to expect from this song and good thing you thought of sending this. So focusing on what I thought worked for this song was Lady Gaga herself. The way she sings in the song and especially the chorus just really hit me in that I thought it was great and catchy and something that instantly stuck on me. Yes the music in it is great as well and really helps the catchiness of the song. Score: 10/10

Ben_Jamin - Pendulum: The Island Pt.1(Dawn)

So you had a hard time figuring out what I meant by catchy and what to send. I didn't think anybody would have that problem and is a reason why I picked it as the round theme. Good thing you found a song to send. I have listened to Pendulum songs before and this album but only select songs off of it. You managed to pick a good one from it. I really like the beat it has and the melody played by synths and all. The vocalist is good too and is typical of what you hear from music like this. This had a dose of catchy in many parts of the song and with both the music and the vocals. Not as strong as some of the other scores but good enough. Score: 8.5/10

Lucien - Frost*:Toys

By the goodwill of my heart, you were able to get back in this roulette and send me songs. You've done a pretty good job so far as has everybody else and you did it again with this song. Frost* has been the same with me like it has been with Seventh Wonder in which I've seen them be mentioned but enver checked them out. I most def will now thanks to this song. I just liked everything from it, the sound, the playing, the singing, the chorus, the upbeat feeling to it. It just worked and I really liked it. Only reason why its not getting a 10/10 is because I just felt like it fell short of being as catchy as the other 10/10's from this round but I know its a song I'll keep listening to again and again. Score: 9.5/10

Scores
lonestar - 24.5 + 8 = 32.5
Shadow Ninja 2.0 - 24.5 + 10 = 34.5
Ben_Jamin - 24.5 + 8.5 = 32.5
Dark Castle - 25 + 10 = 35
senecadawg2 - 24 + 8 = 32
Dr. DTVT - 27.5 + 7.5 = 35
adace - 25.5 + 7 = 32.5
Lucien - 26.5 + 9.5 = 36

Next round is to send me an instrumental song booyah!

If you liked that one, I'd recommend you check out the rest of the album, Journey Of Souls. The Last Frontier is probably the catchiest, but the rest of the songs are solid, and one or two I would say are even better than The Last Frontier.

Also sent.

Fair enough, for me catchy refers to one you can't stop listening to, and I literally spun that one for four days straight. :lol

Anyways, glad you liked it, and check out the album, it's equally as solid beginning to end. Brilliant stuff!!!

I gotta give this album a spin or two to figure out what to send, might be a day or two...

You guys just want me to spend all the money I don't have. Saw they have it for free on bandcamp so I got but will probably buy another album from them if I actually like this one and want to check the other ones out.

You know what, you have a point there. I can see myself and probably will have times where I'll keep on playing that song a few days in a row but I had my requirements for it a bit differently this time. But thank you for sending it and I'll ch-ch-ch-check it out.

Okay so I'm liar for not posting the results up when I said I would. Please forgive me but look on the bright side, we only got 2 rounds left so this will be over soon and you won't have to be waiting on me anymore. Anyway results time.

Shadow Ninja 2.0 - Jon Gomm: Topeka

I swear I have heard and watched a video of this guy playing before because he seemed very similar but can't remember if I really did or not. Anyway, this song was really nice and all the things that he does with the guitar with the playing and beating on it and all. Also the sound of his guitar is just awesome and especially how the bass lines he plays on it sound. I think the length of the song is perfect because it doesn't overstay its welcome and it just makes me feel happy. Score: 8.5/10

adace - Scale the Summit: Odyssey

A band I've heard a couple of songs from but hadn't taken the time to delve in deeper. I really liked this song. The melodies and riffs the guitars play are nice and wonderful with the bass really helping those riffs have a much fuller and thicker feel. The title of the song is perfect for it because it is one of those that have that feel of thinking you on a adventure/journey/odyssey. The ending with the guitar at first I felt that it was kinda out of place but grew to get used to it because I felt that it could have been its separate track instead. Score: 9/10

senecadawg2 - Gordian Knot: Muttersprache

This was a song that took quite a couple of listens to grow on me with the first couple of listens now really doing much for me. At moments I just wouldn't pay much attention to it I felt like and felt like it was longer than it actually is. Now that I listen to it again and again, I like it and start appreciating each section of the song more. It starts out pretty groovy with some nice riffs spread out through the song. I also felt like it would get better the more the song went on and was working its way towards the ending. Score: 8.5/10

Dark Castle - Baroness: Cockroach En Fleur

Another song pretty much just dealing with an acoustic guitar. It starts off with the guitar playing what I find to be a haunting, finger picked melody and it leads to a bluesy riff that sounds like a natural progression for the song. Which then leads to another melody being played which ups the tempo more and more to start making the song start to sound like its going into a frenzy leading to that soft and mellow ending. All that in less than 2 minutes on 1 instrument. Consider me impressed. Score: 9.5/10

lonestar - Exivious: Deeply Woven

So there was lots of pressure riding on this song with the way you were excited to share with somebody and being all giddy about. Right away from the intro of the song I can see why. This song just starts off in a badass way with all the instruments doing each their own part to contribute to the awesome riff they're playing. And the guitar playing reminded me as well of Cynic which ended up making sense since one of the guitarists and founders of this band was in Cynic for the Traced in Air LP(which I love). Then we got to the guitar solo section which I thought was the weakest part of the song but still good. Add in the saxophone for this song and it gives it more of a dynamic feeling and works for this song. Score: 9.5/10

Lucien - The Enid: Tripping the Light Fantastic

This one I had the hardest time figuring how much I liked it. The production I like in the song because you can hear every detail of every instrument playing and gives it that live feel. The orchestral section are interesting and I really enjoy them. So the problem rest in the moments where its just the other instruments and mostly the guitar being the main focus. I find those parts to be good but a bit dull sometimes and a bit long to get anywhere compared to how the song moves like it does in the orchestral sections. Also felt it was a tad bit long thanks to those sections which just didn't excite as much as the others. Score: 7.5/10

Dr. DTVT - Scale the Summit: The Great Plains

Another Scale the Summit song and another decent one as well. I liked Odyssey more than this one but that's not to say I didn't like this one either. Partly due to the progression the band has taken, I didn't feel this one take me on a grand adventure like Odyssey but it sure has lots of other things going for it. There many great guitar moments in this and I feel like I like the solos in this one a tad bit better. This song jumps more from place to place as well but it fits together nicely. Score: 8.5/10

Ben_Jamin - Travis Larson Band: Fuzzy

I usually prefer to listen or see bands that play music like this live cause it just makes the listening experience so much better. This song is strong and works like this anyway. The main riff played is really groovy and which helps keep the song moving during the solo sections. The guitar solos I found to be okay but that each one that came after the other one was better. Also that melody the guitar would play between solos was nice. Gotta point out the fretless bass solo which was good as well. Bottom line is the song was good but nothing that really grabbed at me or that I found to be outstanding. Score: 8/10

Scores
lonestar - 32.5 + 9.5 = 42
Shadow Ninja 2.0 - 34.5 + 8.5 = 43
Ben_Jamin - 32.5 + 8 = 40.5
Dark Castle - 35 + 9.5 = 44.5
senecadawg2 - 32 + 8.5 = 40.5
Dr. DTVT - 35 + 8.5 = 43.5
adace - 32.5 + 9 = 41.5
Lucien - 36 + 7.5 = 43.5

For round 6, send me a song that you find to have anything that sounds beautiful to you like a chorus or melody or singing. If you guys have trouble understanding what I mean. Let me know so I can change the theme of the round. Gracias.

I will say that easily this was and will be one of my favorite rounds in this roulette and that you guys surely did not disappoint. But anyway, one to my bad write-ups as usual.

Shadow Ninja 2.0 - Sigur Rós: Varúð

Wow, what can I say since I don't know what to say for this song besides it most definitely being beautiful and an amazing song. Everything in the song is just done right, the piano playing, the melody, the guitars, the choir, and especially Jónsi's voice. His voice is what hits you the most and just has a wonderful feeling to it. I get the feeling of him more like howling like a wolf towards the sky(if that makes any sense to anybody else) in some parts and it just gives this very emotional feeling to the song. I'ma just go ahead and give the score to this song instead of blabbing about it and not doing a good job. Score: 10/10

Ben_Jamin - Pain of Salvation: Vocari Dei

So I was a bit weary at the beginning of this song thinking it would just be all these messages of people sending to God with the music just being more like background music. As the song progresses on, the music starts to come a bit more forward and more instruments playing. The melody the instruments are playing is a nice one and very enjoyable even without the voices. It never overtakes the messages though which would cause me to start thinking lots of thoughts regarding the subject it was about which I kinda wished it didn't happen at the moment so I wouldn't be distracted by my thoughts instead of listening. But the mix of the people's messages to God really get carried with the music to add more emotional depth to them. Overall very enjoyable but wish the messages ended when the music did. Maybe it leads to the next track of the album which I haven't heard. Score: 8.5/10

senecadawg2 - Ulver: EOS

One of the bands I discovered about in these forums and one of the longest that I've been meaning to check out but haven't yet. Thanks to senecadwag2 again, I will finally delve into their discography with the motivation I received from this amazing piece of music. I certantly considered this to be a beautiful song just about the lines of Varúð but with a more eerie and dark atmosphere. Which is great and I like(considering one of my favorite bands is Godspeed You! Black Emperor and their music is full of that), and is taken to great use in this song. The singer's voice is just great in this with it being all smooth and deep with a warm feeling to it while singing those lyrics giving off a sad image. Score: 10/10

Lucien - Maurice Ravel: Daybreak

I was expecting a song like this from you and gladly I was correct. First off I won't consider it to be as beautiful as other types of works with orchestra I've heard before but this is one is good too. This piece I feel like I might have to give more listens to as well though and would like to see it in a ballet since that's what it was written for even though I've only seen like one ballet before(The Nutcracker)and that was many years ago. I got more of a love feeling from this work than from any of the other songs but one that goes through many stages of love. The last half has moments that feel much darker than the first half and I feel like the section that has the more beautiful sounding moments added to the this piece is the wind section. The core is probably brought down because I just didn't get those moments or feelings of it being beautiful as some of the other songs in this round. Score: 8/10

adace - Katatonia: The Racing Heart

A band with a similar experience I've had with Ulver besides the fact I have at least listened to a song from them before and liked it. Enough of talking what I've heard and not heard from them. It does have that feeling of being a song of being beutiful and depressing at the same time. I think the strongest part of the song is its chorus which picks up from the mood set by the verses before it especially thanks to Jonas' voice and singing. I just don't find this chorus to be as strong as other songs along the same vein or style of this type of music. Score: 8.5/10

lonestar - Yes: Turn of the Century

Yes, heard of many times, have only listened to Machine Messiah, which I liked. Any way, you said in your message, "it's pretty far out of what's been sent in the roulette", which I want my roulette to be about and it has in almost every round, especially from Lucien, and that's what I like and hope helps me expand my music listening even more. This song will help with that since it does fit in the beautiful music category. The story of the lyrics for this song which you graciously explained to me is a very touching one and is put with the correct music for it. I really liked the moments in which Jon's vocals and the guitars played the vocal melodies together and enjoyed the vocals overall even if I don't don't think they reached the level of hitting me as the Sigur Rós or Ulver ones did. Also I feel like instrumentally they might have refrained too much for my own tastes and wanted some drums to keep in that middle musical section. But hey, you can'y have everything how you want if you didn't write the song which is great anyway. Score: 8/10

Dark Castle - Grimes: Visions

I cut you some slack with this song since I recently listened to this album for the first time like a week ago but mostly only have paid attention to "Oblivion" so far. Damn is this song beautiful and gives you a happy and warm feeling inside. That almost hypnotizing synth melody played with extra instruments added in the background until the drum beat kicks in is awesome way to begin this song. Add the vocals which sound great singing, "My heart will never be, will never see, will never know...." is add like adding the cherry on top. I don't know man, I just find it hard to explain more of why I like this song and think its beautiful but I do and that's all that needs to be said most of the time. Which it was longer though but thankfully we can use repeat. Score: 9/10

Dr. DTVT - Epica: Solitary Ground

So easily the best thing from this song are the vocals. I don't think anybody can deny that she has a good voice and it works for songs like these. Considering that and how obvious for me it is in songs in this category for the vocals to be beautiful sounding, somehow this song falls short of the other ones. I would say some of it has to do with the music which is good but feels like something I have heard many times before so isn't something that will wow me. What carries this song is what she does with her vocal melodies and good range to portray different feelings throughout the song. Score: 7/10

Okay so we've gotten this far and now we move on to the last round of this roulette. It will be an open one again to close things off and to see if the way you decide what to send me has changed from the first open round to this round. Thanks in advance for sticking and dealing with my bad write-ups, usual high score(that's your fault guys anyway for sending good songs), lengthy times between rounds, and shortcoming. But anyway, lets move forward shall we.

Yeah, my only complaint is that I'm not winning.

Amen.

Also, do I get extra points for having an incredibly hard time deciding between EOS and Varúð?

Last submission coming up!

Thinking about it, you should but look at the bright side. you would've gotten 10 points either way. So I still need a submission from Doc, Ben_Jamin, Lucien, and adace. Thank you.

:millahhhh :'( Today is a sad day because we have come to the end of this roulette in which you guys had to deal with weeks of using up your time to send me songs and me telling you what I thought about them. But man am I glad that you guys did and that we all went through this. My music listening has grown and I've discovered so many new talented music makes out there which for me is one of the best things I like to do and will always want to do.

Regarding this round, as usual, another solid round from you guys just like they all have been and will be obvious from all the usual high scores as well. So lets move on to the scores instead writing all this unnecessary crap.

Dark Castle - Enslaved: Roots of the Mountain

Another song from this band and album in this roulette and thank goodness I've been pushed to listening to this band and this song of course. Man that in your face black metal style opening is great which leads to I guess I will use progressive type section with the clean vocals is just one the best changes in a song I've heard in a while and I don't get tired of it. And that's just the beginning of the song. The rest of the song goes on with some nice guitar playing and riffs with the chorus popping in occasionally that just sounds nice mostly thanks again to those clean vocals. Not only is nice guitar(good solos as well) and vocal work, but some nice layers in the background with the keyboards or synths whatever you want to call it. The song with its 9 minutes length just moves and changes in  great ways with a just drum and bass section and later on to more full on black metal sections. I mean this song is just the bee's knees man. I dig the lyrics too. Score: 10/10

Shadow Ninja 2.0 - Diablo Swing Orchestra: Voodoo Mon Amour

So this was a band I was introduced to in my last roulette and liked what they were doing but I guess I forgot about them afterwards and never listened to them again. I now know that I should since I really enjoy what they are doing especially in songs like this one. I like the swing groove to the song and great horn section playing and sound mixed with the strong female vocals. I mean this song is just groovy, enjoyable, happy(besides the lyrics), and just catchy as well. Oh yeah and a cello break, now that's badass man. Score: 9/10

lonestar - Absolute Priority: Fear of the Night

I first when I read your message I read the title track as Fear of the Dark and started playing Iron Maiden in my head but that's besides the point of this write-up. Good intro that leads to a piano section and I kinda like the guy's vocals but aren't as strong or powerful I would say as others I heard in this genre of music but it works and it fits the song. I really focused on the vocals in this song cause there's a lot going on with them with all the layering and melodies and great chorus singing and I mean I really enjoy that chorus and his singing in it. All the instruments are solid, drums, good and discernible bass lines, nice guitar playing and solos, and keyboard work with some good solos as well. In a nutshell this song has everything that bands like these offer and make them enjoyable. And finally the ending of the song which I really like and feel like it has almost an epic feeling to it although the story behind the song lyrics I guess we can agree isn't epic. Score: 9/10

senecadawg2 - Gallowbraid: Stone of Remembrance

Another song with black metal elements in this round which is great when it works and is good of course. Now this is black metal mixed with folk which gives this song the feeling of going on a journey(Imagine Bilbo Baggins listening to this as he's traveling through Middle Earth)and gives off vibes from bands like Agalloch which is good and I like. I also liked the variety of the vocals and the production with the full bass sound which makes it sound much bigger in my opinion. I might've not described this song as much as the other ones but that's because its just a solid enjoyable song for me and it would make all these write-ups start sound repetitive. As long as you get the gist is what's important. Score: 9/10

Ben_Jamin - Foxy Shazam: Oh Lord

Man oh man or should I say Oh Lord. After hearing this song for the first time, I just kept repeating it cause I was just having fun and enjoying my time listening to it. The main reason why easily was cause of the singer. Man what a voice this guy has and the great melodies sung in parts with the piano I just smiled at the first time I heard them. Then there's the chorus which is just amazing and fun as hell to sing along with. The instruments in the song are good of course and help back up the great singing in this song with the added help of the choir too especially to make that chorus just full of great moments. I mean I could keep talking about this song but you should just listen to it and check out those vocals and I'ma give it a really high rating cause that's how much I liked listening to it. Score: 10/10

adace - Thrice: Digital Sea

Familiar with the band as in have heard mention of them many times but never listened to. I have to say that this was the song I had to listen to the most quite a bit since it turns out this was a grower for me. The first couple of listens I was pretty underwhelmed by it and wanted to give it more chances. I like the simple beat it has and somewhat what they tried to do with the vocals. The atmosphere of the song is also pretty interesting and good but as grabbing as it could be. Overall for hard to explain reasons, I just didn't enjoy this song as much as the others. Score: 7/10

Lucien - Mad King Corduroy: Rain at Night

So this was one of the more interesting submissions in this round and a good at one at that because I usually dig music like this when it works. "A very cyberpunk feeling bit of synth music. This would feel right at home in a cheesy but well done sci-fi from the late seventies." is how its described on YouTube which makes lots of sense because also works as a stand alone song without having to make any connections to anything else. I like the synth rhythm it has and the synth soloing I think is okay but not great but does fit the tone and feel of the song I would say. Not much to say since that's pretty much all that happens in the song but I liked and thought it was good. Score: 8/10

Dr. DTVT - Silent Memorial: Fear

Lets gets right to it. This song has some solid riffs and guitar solos. With the drums and bass doing a good rhythm section. The singer I almost feel like is the weakest link in the song but not that he's not good. He is but not great and the chorus I just didn't feel it to be strong as others in this round but does have a catchy vibe to it which ya'll already know I like. One big disappointment in the song is the orchestral break with all those midi strings going on which sounds cool but the sounds just don't do it justice and kinda let you down but its not really the band's fault that that is the approach they had to take. Overall a solid song at most. Score: 8/10

Scores
lonestar - 50 + 9 = 59
Shadow Ninja 2.0 - 53 + 9 = 62
Ben_Jamin - 49 + 10 = 59
Dark Castle - 53.5 + 10 = 63.5
senecadawg2 - 50.5 + 9 = 59.5
Dr. DTVT - 50.5 + 8 = 58.5
adace - 50 + 7 = 57
Lucien - 51.5 + 8 = 59.5

Congratulations to Dark Castle for winning this roulette by 1.5 points more than Shadow Ninja. By all of you should high five yourselves for great job you guys did and great song that you sent me. Just cause this is over and we have a winner doesn't mean you can't keep sending me music you want to share with somebody else or if you think I'll like it. If not, then its all good too anyway.

Here's a song for you guys whether or not you have heard it because its what I listened to after finishing this to celebrate this roulette. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_spVxhWEQWc

Congrats Dark Castle, and thanks Obfuscation for running a class roulette.

And if it makes you feel better about the lyrical content of that song, in the last track of the album they fry him in the electric chair. I highly reccomend Hunter, one of the best concept albums I've come across in a long time.

I'll say that it's Top 5 material for sure (of recent concept albums).  Was just listening to it earlier this week - along with many of the other concepts you've introduced me to over the years.

Damnit I usually send Enslaved, but you weren't hot on my harsh vocal song so I backed off of them.

Yeah I will check it out since I checked the the next track since the one you send me lead right to it and talk about a concept album with a grim ending.
Damnit I usually send Enslaved, but you weren't hot on my harsh vocal song so I backed off of them.

Well with the Enslaved song you sent me should have giving you confidence to send it. Also which harsh vocal song was that? From what I remember, the ones I wasn't as hot for were ones with clean vocals.

Also nice to see that everybody enjoyed the roulette and adace, I already signed up for another one so keep your eyes open for whenever its my turn again.

Yeah, the last track is grim, but the guitar solo in it is just fucking insane. Had it for my phone ringtone for a while.
