Title: What's your ideal Dream Theater concert?
Post by: Zyzzyva17 on January 16, 2014, 11:46:45 PM
If you could choose the setlist for a Dream Theater concert, what would it be? The only rule is that it should be less than 3 hours of music.
Mine is as follows:

1. A Nightmare to Remember
2. Blind Faith
3. Lines in the Sand
4. Ytse Jam
5. Surrender to Reason
6. Far from Heaven
7. Breaking All Illusions
__________________________________________

8. In the Presence of Enemies, Pt. 1
9. Scarred
10. Vacant
11. Stream of Consciousness
12. Take the Time
13. The Spirit Carries On
14. In the Presence of Enemies, Pt. 2
__________________________________________

15. Octavarium

(I went with the "one thing from each album" approach)

Hmm.. While these aren't necessarily all of my favorite songs (some of my favorites have already had decent live coverage), they are among songs that are my favorites, plus songs that I'd particularly like to see live aswell as song's that I feel DT haven't played in a while (and should), but also in a format that would flow well for DT (imo at least) to make my ideal setlist that reflects what I appreciate in Dream Theater at this moment in time:

Opening:
1. Behind the Veil
2. Panic Attack
3. Lines in the Sand (Rotate with Trial of Tears)
4. Breaking All Illusions (Rotate with In The Name of God)
5. The Count of Tuscany

Second Set:
6. New Millennium (Rotate with A Rite of Passage)
7. Constant Motion (Rotate with Honor Thy Father)
8. The Killing Hand
9. Blind Faith
10. Wither (Rotate with Along for the Ride)
11. The Answer Lies Within
12. The Ministry of Lost Souls
13. Surrender to Reason (Rotate with The Bigger Picture)

Encore:
14. A Mind Beside Itself (Rotate with Illumination Theory)
15. *insert Images and Words song here*

That'll make a 2 and half Hour show and most rotated songs are of similar length.  :D

First of all, the band would either be in its 1991-1994 or its 1999-2010 layout.
The lights & stage would probably be laid out and programmed in a manner similar to PN09/2010 or the 2011 Europe summer shows. Complex light shows, yet with a theatrical touch of subtlety. And none of that garish spotlight backlight crap, either.
And no click tracks!

False Awakening Suite (Intro Track)
A Nightmare to Remember
Ytse Jam (w/drum solo)
Home (Opening chord is Ytse' Jam's Last chord)
(Welcome)
The Looking Glass
Breaking All Illusions
The Bigger Picture/
Through My Words/
Fatal Tragedy
Piano Solo/
Sacrificed Sons

Hell's Kitchen (Intermission House Music)/

Lines in the Sand
Goodnight Kiss/
Solitary Shell (Extended)
Voices
Eve w/ Samples
Space-Dye Vest
Wait for Sleep/
Learning to Live
-----
The Count of Tuscany
A Change of Seasons

3 hours, 6 minutes, plus intro/intermission.
I must have calculated wrong.

FAS
Misunderstood
Behind the Veil
Trial of Tears
The Bigger Picture
You Not Me
Home
Sacrificed Sons

Overture (SDOIT)
A Fortune in Lies
As I Am
Wait for Sleep
One Last Time
In The Name of God
The Ministry of Lost Souls
ITPOE 1&2
Breaking all Illusions

Finally Free
Illumination Theory
Metropolis Pt.1
Octavarium

Something like that.  The orders all messed up and I don't have time at the moment to add up the run times.  Sorry OP!

Mostly I'd just like to hear You Not Me, Misunderstood, One Last Time, Finally Free and Behind the Veil.  As long as those are there I can't really complain!  There is so little available as far as live performances of YNM and Misunderstood it should be a crime.  Everyone might not like them, but they deserve more play than essentially none.  :sadpanda:

This time I went with one track from each album. Due to having to be under 3 hours these are not all my favorite songs from each album. By the way I think ToT would be a cool way to start a show.

Trial Of Tears
Beyond This Life
Learning To Live
The Count of Tuscany
In The Presence Of Enemies Pt.1
In The Name Of God

Behind The Veil
Lie
The Killing Hand
The Glass Prison
Breaking All Illusions
Octavarium

A Change Of Seasons

My list can be slimmed down by replacing TCoT with TLF + Extended jam at some point in the second set.

I won't have an hour limit, as this is just fantasizing ^^
The current intro with the video is awesome, so I'll keep it:
-FAS
-TEI
All of us would love some heavy things going after that intro, this means I'd pick:
-The Dark Eternal Night/Welcomes, greeting of the band and the fans
-Scarred
Then something lighter and an instrumental to keep James going:
-Hollow Years(with a magnificent solo like at Budokan)
-The Enigma of Eternity (Even though JP hates medleys so much, I made this up in my mind, don't kill me! :D )
Another kickass song or 2 to get the crowd jumping, just before the 20 min intermission:
-Beyond This Life
-Misunderstood

Intermission with Hell's Kitchen and YouTube mixes etc

2nd set will be something heavier and longer, starting with an epic:
-TCOT
After the first epic of the concert, shall we move on to some crowd singing?
-The Silent Man
-Forsaken
James should be very comfortable by now, so we shall get some tough songs!
-LtL
-The Ministry of Lost Souls
-TSF/TGP
And a long instrumental to rest our old pirate:
-SoC
I just couldn't do without adding this beauty before moving on to the set closer:
-Outcry
And the 2nd set's closer ITself:
-IT ;D

10 mins piss break for both the fans and the band, then the grand encore!

Encore:
-Under A Glass Moon
-TBP
-I Walk Beside You
And finally, the concert finisher which will make the band fade away:
-The Spirit Carries On

Hope you all like it!

Rotations? I haven't thought about them much. Maybe at a later date ^^

Title: Re: What's your ideal Dream Theater concert?

Ill give it a stab:

The show would at a place like Beacon Theater in NYC (which has become my favorite venue) or similar (a nice Opera house style with great sound and great views) although id gladly take a sold out football stadium but ill be realistic...

It would have to have a great stage show sort of like this tour, but ill go further and add pyro technics.... to every song.... well more realistically pyros to the bigger parts of the best songs is fine.  This show would also have guest appearances with former DT members (I wont go crazy with guests from other bands)

Set 1:

In The Presence of Enemies Pt 1
The Glass Prison
Blind Faith
The Mirror
Lie
Lines in the Sand (with DS)
Wait for Sleep (with KM)
Learning to Live

Set 2:

A Nightmare to Remember (with MP)
Lost Not Forgotten
Hollowed Years
Home
Solitary Shell
Afterlife (with CD)
In The Name of God

Encore:

A Change of Season (somehow with all previous members)

Didnt clock that so not sure if its over 3 hours or under for me to squeeze a song in, but i think id die if i saw this.
Title: Re: What's your ideal Dream Theater concert?
Post by: TheAtliator on July 23, 2014, 04:23:33 PM
Partially taking into account what I've already seen-

Light Fuse and Get Away
Surrender To Reason
-
This Dying Soul
Take the Time
Beyond this Life (with jam session. Mangini would be a great addition to this)
Just Let Me Breathe
Blind Faith
In The Presence of Enemies

--intermission--

The Glass Prison
Build Me Up Break Me Down
-
A Change of Seasons
-
Caught in a Web
Small piano solo/ Anna Lee
Outcry
The Killing Hand (complete with G5s. James can totally do it again now. Also, it's not f*cking Christmas  :lol)
Octavarium

I don't really like encores, so no encore. Over 3 hours, but under 3.5 hours.

That is unbelievably perfect

Something like that. Clocks in at 3:19, so it'd be something like 3:45 in real life. SHUT UP I CAN DREAM OKAY

1.   The Enemy Inside
2.   Blind Faith
3.   This Is the Life
4.   Peruvian Skies
5.   Voices
6.   Behind the Veil
7.   Surrounded
8.   Fatal Tragedy
9.   Speak to Me
10. Scarred
11. Disappear
12. Take the Time
13. Breaking All Illusion

--- intermission ---

14. Trial of Tears
15. Eve (with samples)
16. The Spirit Carries On
17. Space-Dye Vest
18. Hell's Kitchen
19. Lines in the Sand
20. In the Name of God

--- encore ---

21. The Root of All Evil
22. A Change of Seasons

I'm testing it out right now, and I think that it would flow really sweetly. The transition from Trial of Tears to Eve is a really good one, and I can totally see TROAE as the first song of the encore... imagine the lights down, you can't see anything, then that drum intro comes in, and when the main riff enters, BAM! lights go on. How sweet would that be?

EDIT: Whelp, just saw the 3 hours rule. I guess I'd cut... Scarred, The Spirit Carries On and... This Is the Life, I guess? I dunno. That would bring it below 3 hours.

My ideal DT concert? Easy, one where I've got front-row centre tickets. Preferably in a smaller venue, ideally close to where I live.
said it before - I'd love to see the band play an acoustic, unplugged style show. Yes, I know, I always get shouted down by people telling me that's not what DT are about, but that's precisely why I think they could rock it.

Setlist wise - a good combination of favourites and songs I've not seen before:

The Glass Prison
Under a Glass Moon
Peruvian Skies
The Killing Hand
Burning My Soul '96
Home
Through Her Eyes
~~~~~
Erotomania
Voices
The Silent Man
Misunderstood
The Bigger Picture
The Count of Tuscany
~~~~~
The Spirit Carries On
Learning to Live

I know I just did this yesterday (7/26), But I Wanted to amend a few things. I meant to include more from "Awake," but I forgot. Also I wanted to put something together that is more reflective of the current tour, sort of "Along for the Ride: The 2nd leg." I will include as much varied material as I can, which may or may not be to everyone's liking. So Here goes:

SET ONE:
1) Surrender to Reason
2) Overture 1928, which would segue straight into...
3)...Just Let Me Breathe
4) Keyboard (piano) solo/About to Crash
5) The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun
6) One Last Time
7) Constant Motion

The following would be an all-acoustic set played on REAL acoustic instruments-Mr. Petrucci would play acoustic guitar or guitars, Mr. Rudess would play a real (probably small) piano, Mr. Myung would play either acoustic bass guitar or back-up to Petrucci, and Mr. Mangini would play either a small acoustic drum kit or percussive instruments such as conga, bongo, tambourine, triangle, etc.

8) Medley: Space-Dye Vest/The Spirit Carries On/Carpe Diem & Another World (from A.C.O.S.)
9) Another Day
10) Hollow Years
11) Solitary Shell
12) Medley: The Bigger Picture/Only a Matter of Time/The answer Lies Within/Forsaken/This Is the Life
13) Along for the Ride (I think this song would sound beautiful "unplugged.")

There might have to be a break while moving between electric and ascoustic instruments and back again, but I think it would be worth it...

Anyway with apologies to Mr. Petrucci the 1st set would conclude with the 2nd of three medleys-

14) Awake Medley: Lie/Erotomania/Voices/Innocence Faded/Scarred/6:00

SET TWO:
1) The Count of Tuscany
2) Lost Not Forgotten
3) Learning to Live
4) About to Crash (Reprise)/Guitar Solo
5) As I Am/Drum Solo
6) Behind the Veil
7) Scenes from a Memory Medley: Strange Deja Vu/Fatal Tragedy/Home/The Dance of Eternity/Finally Free (with the extended jam/closing section from the L.S.F.N.Y. Version)

ENCORE:
1) To Live Forever
2) The Root of All Evil

Something like this: (going with a 3 hour limit since that feels logical with DT)

1. Beyond This Life
2. 6:00
3. Caught in a Web
4. Metropolis Part I - The Miracle and the Sleeper
5. Breaking All Illusions
6. In the Name of God
-----
7. Fatal Tragedy
8. Lines in the Sand
9. Voices
10. Under a Glass Moon
11. Home
12. Disappear
------
13. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
-----Encore-----
14. A Change of Seasons

That was tough and I had to leave out many great ones tbh. I'm aware that it's a lot from the same albums. I could do one with something from each album as well. I need to think about it though.

If I could I'd give you my New York experience, although you'd be behind a disgusting 20-something Asian couple kissing and fighting the whole time. Still better than Tick's though.

Do you really want Charlie runing A Change of Seasons like that

I totally didn't think of that

How about this instead:

---Encore 2---
***JP, JM, JLB, JR, MM, KM, MP, and DS beat Charlie into submission so he can't sing the next song***
A Change of Seasons (w/ Derek, Kev, and Mike, but not Charlie, because he sounds better when he doesn't sing, and every DT fan wants to forget he ever existed)

Am I supposed to be typing in a different color? I'm new to this forum....

haha, I think it would be fun to hear Charlie perform some stuff he's never done before! And since we already have a "normal" live version coming with the next live DVD, I thought a Charlie version would be neat. Although I was debating between SDV and Eve for the Kevin Moore song, so maybe that would make more sense.

I also think Charlie would be great on LitS, doing Pinnick's parts, and maybe trading lines or whole verses with James. I personally love Charlie and thought he did a great job in 2004, I would love to see more of him and DT together.

The idea of a 30 year anniversary setlist is kinda neat, but IMO it lacks maybe a few too many of the BIG songs. No Octavarium? No Metropolis Part 1?

Those both were done on Score, the bands 20th anniversary so I could see them skipping those altough that in no means that they arent important songs in DTs catalog, but with the amount of material they have, somethings gotta give.

Post by: chaossystem on July 30, 2014, 06:07:57 PM
Okay...okay! I Know I've already done TWO of these, but I didn't really "clock" either one of them, and I wanted to be a little more realistic in my selections. Also I wanted to correct some mistakes that I made, especially regarding some songs that I wanted in the show, but forgot about and put the "wrong" ones in instead. Best of all, this time there will be NO medleys! The total playing time clocks in at about ten minutes shy of three hours, unless the band were to do some extended jams/instrumental passages. Now, some people might think that I'm "pandering" or "going for the obvious"  or "being too commercial" with some of my selections, but you'll never please everybody, no matter what you do. As Mike Portnoy once said about the release of one of their albums "We could deliver the second coming of CHRIST and still not please everybody!" Another thing that some people may not like is that this show is planned as a retrospective of their ENTIRE CAREER, with at least one song from every album More or less in chronological order. But at least they're all FULL-LENGTH songs, the shortest one being just shy of five minutes!
But since we are still on the "Along for the Ride" tour I wanted to include a few extra songs from the new album, and fortunately MOST of those songs are SHORT enough that they'll fit in with my format.

Anyway-on with the show!

First Set:
The Intro Tape will be "eve"
Opener>
1) Surrender to Reason
2) Lost Not Forgotten>
I thought it would be fun to start by inverting a couple of newer songs like they sometimes do anyway. Also I wanted to include an extra song from "Dramatic" because it was the first DT album that Mr. Mangini played on, so he can be in more "familiar territory." So after the first two songs, Mr. LaBrie would give a little speech thanking the audience, welcoming them to the show, and explaining that tonight's show is going to cover the entire history of the band (or something to that effect) Starting with
"When Dream and day unite:"

3) Only a Matter of Time>
More or less my favorite song off the album. The "Budokan" version was excellant, so I'm sure it'll still sound great.
4) Metropolis> This is one song the audience never seems to get tired of, and I guess I really don't, either.
5) Scarred>
I know this song was in the previous setlist, but it's still thev 20th anniversary of "Awake," so why not keep the longest single song from that album in the set?
6) Just Let Me Breathe>
I kind of wanted to include a more "epic" track like "Lines in the Sand" or "New Millennium" but I think this onev fits better time-wise. Besides, I don't think they've played this song since "Metropolis 2000."
7) The Spirit Carries On>Another song the audience never seems to get tired of, and is also the right length to fit my "format"
8) Keyboard Solo>
Mr. Rudess could maybe play some samples from the original "Overture" and/or expand the piano intro by at least a minute or two, going into...
9)...About to Crash>This track fits my idea because of the strong guitar and piano parts in it, it would make a good segue from- Keyboard Solo-to itself-to...
10)...Guitar Solo> a good way to come out of "Crash." Mr. Petrucci normally plays a 7 or 8 minute solo, but maybe this time he could play a shorter (like around 5:00), heavier solo that would fit in perfectly with the heavy "fuzz-tone" intro to...
11)...As I Am>
After the heaviness of that song we'll conclude the first set by "bringing it down" and "mellowing it out" with the song that the tour is/was named for. That way we ease the audience into the intermission instead of just throwing us/them into it. Also I thought it would be a good idea to "bookend" the first set with a couple of songs from the new album. And so we finish Part One with...

12) Along for the Ride

                                                                                           INTERMISSION:
When I saw the A.f.t.R. show at the Mesa Arts Center on Easter Sunday of this year, they showed some hilarious videos from youtube or whatever of people making fun of the band, the band making fun of themselves, etc., during the intermissiopn, but it was only for about ten minutes. I would like to see more of this, and when I mean more, I would like it to go for at least 15 min., maybe 20.

Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled program!

Second Set:
1) Sacrificed Sons> I don't think they've played this song since the "Octavarium" tour. I don't like a lot of James LaBrie's lyrical contributions to the band, but in this case he nailed it! This song strikes an emotional chord with a lot of people, and I think it's a pretty good representation of the album. Also, I think the slow intro is a good way to ease the audience (and themselves) back into the show...
2) Forsaken> The only thing that made it easy for me to pick this song was it's length. I do like this song, and a lot of us like horror/vampire stories, so I'm not unhappy with it. But...I would like to maybe have included "Constant Motion." However, without Mr. Portnoy there to sing his part of it, it just wouldn't sound as good. I don't like overdubs-especially vocals-at live shows. There's already too much of that in the "Luna Park" video.
3) A Rite of Passage> On my previous list or lists I included "The Count of Tuscany" because for some stupid reason I clean forgot about this song. It's pretty much my favorite (other than "The Shattered Fortress"and their fantastic cover of "Stargazer") off of B.C.&S.L. It's a cool song about a controversial subject, has great instrumentation, and a very singable chorus. What's not to like? And it would be a great segue-way into the...
4)...Drum Solo> A lot of people like the extended jams/instrumental pieces, so you might like my idea: The Drum Solo would go straight into...
5)... Enigma Machine>...Which would incorporate a lead/solo bass jam by Mr. Myung for about two or three minutes, expanding a six minute instrumental to about nine. Also, I wanted to spread the new tracks out instead of cramming them all into the first set or at the end of the show.
6) On the Backs of Angels>Lyrically, this is more or less my favorite song from "Dramatic." It seems to have something to do with conspiracy theories, and I'm somewhat of a conspiracy buff.
7) A Change of Seasons> Yes, that's right! The first big one, in it's ENTIRETY! Another song that has been MIA for WAY too long! I think it's been about ten years since they've played it, and I'm sure Mangini has never played it at all. I thought it would be interesting to place it here in the set, instead of having it be the VERY last song, or put in too early, because at this point in the show, the band would hopefully be a little more relaxed and not want to "rush" through it. BUT...the audience would probably think that was it. But wat!...There's more! First there's ONE MORE SONG ito conclude the second set:
8) Behind the veil> I think this song is the most interesting song lyrically from the new disc. I've always liked songs and stories about the conflict between good and evil, and this one is kind of like a condensed version of "In the Presence of Enemies."

So there we have it: Two sets that when I added them up totaled about 80 min. each, thus fitting into the "less than three hours format."

What's that you say? "What about an ENCORE?" No encore? Would I do that to you? Of COURSE not!...And you KNOW that there's only ONE way we could properly wrap this thing up. If you peeked at the end (And SHAME ON YOU if you did!) then you ALREADY KNOW...that the encore is....:

PULL ME UNDER!!!>
I swear I think I'm the only one who included this (Their best-known song!!) in my "perfect set list." I can understand why. it's been "done to death," and they don't do much with it when they play it live. But...a lot of us still love this song. It's the one that put them on map! So to speak. I really think that after the more than two-and-a-half hours of over-the-top insanity that I've just served you with, concluding with this song would be THE way to satisfy the most number of people. I think it would probably do it for me.

Anyway, my friends, thank for your patient indulgance if you've borne with me up until now. I hope you enjoyed my selections and my comments, and asny feedback would be MORE than welcome!

And so...until I change my mind again...

As I Am's intro is on bass.

Sacrificed Sons was done in '09-'10.

Put ACoS as the encore and PMU in the second set and it'll work a lot better. Or swap ACoS and Behind the Veil and replace PMU with LtL (with or without Wait For Sleep), Octavarium, The Count, BaI, etc.

Pull Me Under should never be a set closer or encore.  For one, the intro is too difficult to play well live, so it comes off too limp to start with at that stage of a show.  The way they did it on the Awake tour was perfect: it opened the show, and the first 55 seconds was from the CD and played as they came on stage, and then as soon as the song kicks up a notch, they all start playing it live.  That is the perfect way to do that song.

I agree. But they could really place it anywhere WITHOUT the intro, similar to what they did with Home in 2010.

Pull My Metropolis worked fine as the set closer in 2010. I don't think that Pull Me Under would benefit from having its intro castrated.
Title: Re: What's your ideal Dream Theater concert?
Post by: KevShmev on July 31, 2014, 11:17:30 AM
I think it gets castrated when they play it live, since it's nearly impossible for JP to get the right amount of both echo (or whatever that effect is) and power during it for it to sound not limp live.

They did it with PMU itself in 1998 and at least once in 2002. Especially efficient to get the crowd pumped.

Actually, Pull me Under WAS the encore of the second show at Luna Park. I thought it it sounded fine in that spot. but the version of Metropolis from the first day was better. Anyway, a lot of people don't seem to feel they've gotten a complete DT show unless they hear that song, and I'm sure that a lot of other people in the audience would love to hear it as an encore.  I always wondered why they never used it for an encore until the "Dramatic" tour. Now I guess I know. As for anything else I may of gotten wrong, I DID say things like "I don't think," or "As far as I know." And yes, I also know that there were a few spelling errors. I just listened to the  Luna Park version of Pull Me Under while I was writing this, and I found very little to be wrong with the way it sounded. A lot of songs, even by them are going to have vocal or instrumental parts that don't come off that well live. Also, even if I'm wrong about As I Am's intro, I STILL think a heavy guitar solo would be a damn good bridge between the end of About to Crash, and the beginning of that song. One of the biggest problems with way too many of you people is that you want to suck the life out of everything my making it too technically precise until it becomes your version of perfect. PLEASE try to remember that this is a ROCK band.!!! They don't always do everything the same way every time, nor should they be expected to! They probably make little changes in the way that they play and sing the songs because they get BORED doing the same s**t day after day, week after week, month after month, YEAR after YEAR! As John petrucci himself has actually said in one of their videos "we are NOT machines!" If you want the songs to stay exactly the same, stay home and listen to their albums. Don't GO to their live shows or listen to their live albums or watch their concert DVDs! Maybe some of us who do would LIKE to hear something a little different! And we don't mind a few mistakes now and again, because, like I said, it reminds us that they ARE human beings, and not just a buch of f***ing machines!!! Try to have a sense of humor about it, would you please?

When I made my second attempt at this I kind of got carried away. cramx3 was right to ask that question, but the FOUR (not three, as I mistakenly said before) was the only way I could think of to get the variety that I wanted, and represent the band's overall output. Still, I think I did a pretty good job on my "third draft" of creating a far more realistic and "doable" concert.

In the name of your preferred prophet, settle down!

And as far as the whole thing about them doing rock variances, they kind of gave that up with the arrival of MM if you haven't noticed. But I get that it's an ideal show, and my ideal show would have variety too. I was just offering my two cents.

I think what makes the Score anniversary so great is that it has both surprises like Another Won and Raise the Knife, it has epics like 6DOIT and Octavarium, and a few "must have" like Metropolis and The Spirit Carries On. It's perhaps not a perfect setlist since it's a little bit more to the Octavarium side of things, but overall I think it's fairly balanced. Some new surprises, they tried getting something from each album and also include some fan favorites.

I'll admit my knowledge of what songs they have performed live and not is not the best, apart from Space Dye-Vest which they did recently. Are there any other major stand-outs that hasn't been played live? If so, that could be something truly special for an anniversary setlist.

The Best of Times would probably make for a really special live song if played on an anniversary. But it was written by MP right? So the chances of them playing it (because I think it was a very personal song for him?) feels slim at best. Maybe if they manage to smooth over the rough relationship with MP and get him to join them on stage for that song, who knows.

It has to do with compression. The way you're probably editing re-encodes the video to a higher quality, but encoding videos multiple times degrades quality.

My ideal  concert is an Evening with...show in Southeast Florida,...hell, anywhere in Florida. I would've driven the state to see them as I've done numerous times before. Any list of songs would do. Obviously, for whatever reason (promoters, asking for too much money etc etc), this is NEVER going to happen. I'm sorry DT, but I cannot and will not spend my hard earned dollars to see another half-show filled with medleys and other bands I could care nothing about. It is simply not worth my money or my time. Extremely disappointed in Miami.

Considering how many times I've managed to see the band, the only things that I'd really say would be included in my ideal DT concert would be:
• an Evening With (preferably 3 hours of music or more, not including intermission)
• whatever new songs I haven't seen yet
• 2 or 3 older songs I have yet to see live (any of the Majesty demos other than Another Won, Don't Look Past Me, You Not Me, Hell's Kitchen, Repentance, Wither, The Best of Times, The Bigger Picture, Behind the Veil, Surrender to Reason)
• a new Instrumedley consisting of song bits not in the first one (perhaps based around the 12SS)
• several of the other songs altered to varying degrees in comparison to the album versions (my biggest issue with DT live since MP's left, besides the static setlists)

I'm assuming your post is in reference to my complaint about the lack of variation in the songs post-MP, correct? If so, according to your comments, you're speaking about what MM did (not the band as a whole) on a song that was performed one time and with guest musicians - and one that I might add that I haven't heard yet. And in hindsight, admittedly there have been a few other things, such as the mini-improv at the end of Metropolis on L@LP, the 8v ending tacked on to TRoAE and the improv they added to the beginning of ToT on the 2014 tour. But, such things were not played at all the shows (none of the 6 post-MP shows I've seen) and in the case of Metropolis and ToT, were only added at the end of the tour.

I'm talking about stuff like the reworked versions of Surrounded (in 2007) and Caught in Alice's Nine Inch Tool Garden, the A Crack in the Mirror intro to The Mirror, the extended versions of The Killing Hand and Hollow Years, the Tool jam in Lie, the different/additional instrumental sections added to Metropolis and Learning to Live, etc. That is what I'm speaking of - it's one of the things that I loved about DT, spicing up older songs so that they weren't just being performed exactly as they always had previously. That's what's missing. Hopefully on future tours there will be some of that sort of thing, but I'm not holding my breath.
Title: Re: What's your ideal Dream Theater concert?

Hopefully any future performances of Hollow Years resemble the "live" vesrion, and do not revert back to the studio version. That would be a travesty.

I came up with this setlist for a hypothetical 30th anniversary tour and DVD/Bluray - I think it's a good mix of "hits", fan-favorites and a few rare treats:

False Awakening Suite
1. The Enemy Inside
2. Panic Attack
3. Don't Look Past Me
4. In the Presence of Enemies Pt. 1
5. Another Hand/The Killing Hand
6. Wither
7. Take the Time
8. Home
9. The Bigger Picture
*intermission*
10. The Glass Prison
11. On the Backs of Angels
12. Voices
13. Hollow Years
14. Stream of Consciousness
15. Learning to Live
encore:
16. A Change of Seasons

I included OTBOA and TEI due to the Grammy nominations, but for the most part I tried to avoid songs that have appeared on recent live releases.

I would probably replace OTBOA with something like Honor Thy Father or Behind the Veil, but I would keep TEI for sure since it's such a great opener.

It's official. No more "Along for the Ride" tour dates...No Florida dates.. No Texas dates.. No dates in the south at all....I guess it was more important to tour some 3rd world country's than to tour Florida and Texas....No smart.. You have pissed off a very large and loyal fan base here in Florida. Next album better be very good..

This made me vomit a bit in my mouth.
I would be really pissed off if DT skipped my region entirely, but... really?

Yeah I live in Florida and I agree that was a little uncalled for. Every fan deserves to see a band they like, no matter where they live. And that's just disrespecting all the countries they toured in last year.

Even though they announced they were working on a new album I ay as well take a stab at this

Set I

False Awakening Suite
The Enemy Inside
Don't Look Past Me
Another Day
Hells Kitchen
Lines in the Sand
The Looking Glass
The Ministry of Lost Souls
The Bigger Picture

-Intermission-

Set II

The Glass Prison
This Dying Soul
Wither
Behind The Veil
Surrender to Reason
Illumination Theory/Octavarium

-Encore-

A Change of Seasons
Eve? (or something that would be easy on James while keeping the crowd entertained because the next song is...)
Take the Time (Full, non abridged)

No idea how long it would be, I slightly based it off of this tour's setlist. I also think I could fit a ADTOE song in there somewhere...

Hi there,

I've been lurking around a while. Good to see an active DTF. Ideal or not, but considering the last few tours, the set list flow, James' stamina and even 'musiciany' things like guitar tunings and stuff: I’d like to see something like this right now. Tomorrow it might be different though. With the new album it will change again as well. But whatever DT comes up with will be fine. So, for what it’s worth, my two cents!

An Evening With (without album #13, about 174 minutes)
1. A Nightmare To Remember 16:10
2. Behind The Veil 6:52
3. Innocence Faded 5:42
4. Erotomania 6:44
5. Voices 9:53
6. These Walls 7:36
7. Beyond This Life 11:22
8. Wither 5:25
9. Lost Not Forgotten 10:11
10. Surrender To Reason 6:34
11. Take The Time 8:21
--------------------------
12. The Glass Prison 13:52
13. This Dying Soul 11:27
14. Misunderstood 9:32
15. Home 12:53
16. As I Am 7:47
--------------------------------
17. A Change Of Seasons 23:09

Festival Set (about 101 minutes, headlining set 132 minutes)
1. As I Am 7:47
2. This Dying Soul 11:27
3. The Enemy Inside / New Song /  Under A Glass Moon  6:17 / around the 6 or 7 min. mark / 7:03
4. Innocence Faded 5:42
5. Erotomania 6:44
6. Voices 9:53
7. These Walls 7:36
8. Behind The Veil 6:52
9. Wither 5:25
10. Home 12:53
11. Breaking All Illusions 12:25
12. The Bigger Picture (if headlining) 7:40
13. Take The Time 8:21
14. A Change Of Seasons (encore: if headlining) 23:09

I put in The Enemy Inside because I think the kinda 'have to' play it (commercial/record company wise). I'd rather see a new song or Under A Glass Moon though. To me this is a feisty little set, with lots of energy and enough gentle spots. Also, I'm really into Wither these days. A really good song, with nice hooks, good short guitar solo, an overall cohesive sound and very suitable for James voice. Hope they'll pull that one out. As well as Take The Time which I haven't heard live in a while. Cheers!

I am basing my dream concert around the Dance of Eternity show from the Limelight back in 1993 with some changes here and there. That's one show I wish I had the pleasure of seeing.

I hope the guys drink their rock juice beforehand for this one!

Metropolis Part 1
Mission:Impossible Theme/Afterlife (instead of AFiL)
Voices
Under A Glass Moon
Surrounded
Instrumedley (instead of Ytsejam, new and improved)
To Live Forever
Take the Time
The Great Debate
Breaking All Illusions
Learning to Live

In The Presence of Enemies I & II
Keyboard solo/Lines in the Sand
A Crack in the Mirror/The Mirror/Lie
The Bigger Picture
Surrender To Reason
Another Hand/The Killing Hand
The Count of Tuscany
Amazing Grace/The Spirit Carries On
Finally Free

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

A Change of Seasons

Eve (outro)

Yeah it's about 5 hours.   :lol

To be perfectly honest, my ideal Dream Theater concert would be to have them invite me onto to the stage to play "Under a Glass Moon" on guitar with them.  Dream big, folks.  :P
