DREAM THEATER
--GRAMMY-NOMINATED PROGRESSIVE METAL TITANS--
INVITE THE ESTEEMED BERKLEE COLLEGE OF MUSIC
TO JOIN THEM FOR A ONE-OF-A-KIND SHOW
AT THE BOSTON OPERA HOUSE ON TUESDAY, MARCH 25, 2014
THIS EVENT WILL BE RECORDED FOR RELEASE AND IS PART OF THE BAND’S “ALONG FOR THE RIDE” NORTH AMERICAN TOUR LAUNCHING MARCH 20 IN SUPPORT OF THEIR NEW SELF-TITLED ALBUM
TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE HERE: https://HTTPS://TINYURL.COM/N2FWVDX
THE BAND RECENTLY EARNED THEIR SECOND GRAMMY NOMINATION
FOR “BEST METAL PERFORMANCE” FOR THEIR SINGLE “THE ENEMY INSIDE”
DREAM THEATER--Grammy-nominated progressive metal titans--have invited the esteemed Berklee College of Music to join them for a one-of-a-kind show on the band’s upcoming “Along For The Ride” North American tour, when they visit the Boston Opera House on Tuesday, March 25. Tickets for this event start at $35 and are available here: https://tinyurl.com/n2fwvdx.
DREAM THEATER was founded in 1985 when founding members--guitarist John Petrucci, bassist John Myung, and former drummer Mike Portnoy--attended the Berklee College of Music.
Also adding to the significance of this collaboration: Mike Mangini (drums), who joined the band in 2010, is a former faculty member of the Berklee College of Music.
This special homecoming will be captured and recorded for a later release. DREAM THEATER will be joined by special guest ensembles the Berklee World Strings and the Berklee Concert Choir for the second half of the set. The ensembles will layer distinct dramatic elements to DREAM THEATER's production. The World Strings are an international group of creative improvisers who play with rhythmic qualities seldom heard from string instruments. The Concert Choir stretches its repertoire from traditional and contemporary music through a wide range of genres.
DREAM THEATER recently earned a second Grammy nomination for “Best Metal Performance” for the single “The Enemy Inside” from their current self-titled worldwide smash album (released September 24, 2013 on Roadrunner Records).
“DREAM THEATER” made a spectacular debut this past fall, topping Billboard’s “Hard Rock Albums” chart while simultaneously entering at #7 on the overall Billboard 200. The extraordinary chart position marked the group’s third consecutive top 10 debut, and also saw "DREAM THEATER" making top 5 chart debuts in Japan, Germany, Italy, Canada, Argentina, Switzerland, Holland, and Finland, as well as top 10 debuts in Denmark, Austria, and Norway, with career high debuts in the United Kingdom and Australia.
The band recently announced new tour dates for their North American headlining run which will pick up on March 20th in Toronto, ON following the band’s European tour.

OK, Finally!!
Don't know where The Opera House is, but I guess I'm gonna find out. Taking the little TACs to this show as well.
Now if I can figure out the Presale...
-
Presale now open for Boston. Order through the DT site via Crowdsurge. Only Orchestra Left and Orchestra Right available at regular price. VIP tix get you Orchestra Center
-
I'm trying to order, but it won't go past the sign up page..WTF??
-
Orch Left Center, Row I Seats 5-7-9-11
:metal :metal
-
10th Row, center. This will be my 37th show, and my girlfriends first.
-
37th? Great effort.
-
Thanks! It will be 39 by the end of NA leg, including Riverside and Los Angeles (Gold and Platinum tickets, respectively).
BTW, Riverside VIP's are selling like hotcakes. I was shocked that I was only able to get Row N (gold) within the first half hour of ticket sales. Thought I'd at least get Row E or G.
-
Finally DT seems to have ditched the awful Orpheum as a venue. However, now they're playing in the "Opera House". Has anybody ever been, is it any good?
-
Years ago Rumbo I took my wife there for "The Sound Of Music" featuring Richard Chamberlin. I was in the second row and it sounded great but the orchestra was underneath the stage so I don't know how a rock concert sounds there.
-
Interesting that the Crowd Surge site is only offering tickets from rows A and up. All the seating plans show that the first ten rows start in the AAA, BBB and move to AA before finally starting on the A's. So I'm not sure if I got fourth row (D) or twelfth. Its a Gold VIP ticket, but even the Platinums did not offer AAA. Scalp sites seem to be offering row AAA, but I'm not sure if those are just phantom tickets. Perhaps it is just the way they mapped out the seating chart. Any ideas?
-
Finally DT seems to have ditched the awful Orpheum as a venue. However, now they're playing in the "Opera House". Has anybody ever been, is it any good?
No shit. The Orpheum is one step above the Palladium.
The Opera House looks nice. Since we're taking the kids, at least if we need to take them to the lobby for a break, it will be much better than the other shit hole.
Does this show really start at 6;30??
-
Just picked up tickets - this will be my wife's first DT show. Can't wait - I've seen a few shows in 'opera houses' locally (Bonamassa in Hartford) lately and the acoustics were stellar. Hoping this will be even better.
-
Got my 2 tickets. See you folks there!
-
Got my 2 tickets. See you folks there!
Awesome. Is Mrs. King going?
-
Got my 2 tickets. See you folks there!
Awesome. Is Mrs. King going?
Now my drummer friend who I was with the last tour.
-

Dude, let her out of the house, will ya?
-
:lol
The old maid doesn't want to ask her boss to get the time off. I don't get it either but her boss is a maniac.
-
So, I just bought the platinum VIP thing for $200
Ain't I supposed to get access to some good seats now?
How does this work?
Do I just buy a ticket like every other schmuck?
-
Fuck it, I bought a ticket to the mezzanine - Row A seat 12. Yes, I will be able to sit for the entire show :hat :tup
-
And you get to meet the band!
VIP seat tickets for Boston sold out in the second day I think. As it turns out, that block of tickets was not that good anyway. The best seats were released to the public in the presale by another vendor. I purchased Row D in the orchestra via Crowd Surge.
-
Petrucci hints that something "especially special" will happen at this show!
-
Probably not it, and I'm only going on the pics from their site, but a performance at this venue would look amazing on blu-ray
-
Well this show sounds pretty special. Explains the venue choice as well.
-
I'm going to be there, assuming I don't screw up in my old man's eyes.
My old man has angry eyes.
My school releases grades at horrible times.
-
I would like to go if I can get a good ticket. Their seem to only be mezzanine seats left. If anyone has a ticket in the pit or orchestra sections, please let me know. I will take up to three tickets, but if only one is available I will take that.
-
I'm 95% in for this show. Just have to get confirmation that my gf can take off and I'll be buying tickets.
-

Awesome!

I'm 95% in for this show. Just have to get confirmation that my gf can take off and I'll be buying tickets.
Awesome!
Well, looks like we'll finally meet! :D
Bought tickets up near the top, but dead center and on an aisle.
-
Cool! :tup
-
Tim, are you heading down early? I'd like to get us together for a meet up. Let me know.
-
Tim, are you heading down early? I'd like to get us together for a meet up. Let me know.
The Lovely Mrs TAC, as well as TAC Jr. and TAC III are also coming so a meetup will be tough. We're going to try and find some pizza nearby before the show.
We'll be hanging in the lobby a bit too so if you see us, please say Hi.
Same goes for you, Nick. I'll have my eye out for both of you.
-
Awesome. We'll get there a little early in the lobby then.
-
Man... missing this by one week! Stupid conference I go to every year in Boston is on the 19th.
-
I plan on getting some photos of this show. These wouldn't be considered leaks or anything of that nature and banned here, would they?
-
Since the show is being filmed and released as an official DVD, I would avoid sharing personal recordings. In this case, I ere on the side of letting the band first present the show as they intend.
-
If my friend decides he wants to take the trip, then I might be heading to the show too.
-
That would be cool, If you do pm me John.
-
That would be cool, If you do pm me John.
Definitely
-
I just bought my ticket, and this will be my first time seeing them live.
I wonder if they will change the setlist to make more use of the strings and choir.
-

But still photography?
-
Well, we know the band doesn't want you to take photos, if that answers it for you. I anticipate the venue's employees to be especially vigilant at this show. Just an assumption, though.
-
Well, we know the band doesn't want you to take photos, if that answers it for you.
Okay, that's what I really wanted to know.
-
Strings? Choir? Live DVD? One of a kind? They're gonna play Six Degrees. It all adds up harmoniously. Ive got tickets in the mezzinaine so I guess ill find out.
-
Strings? Choir? Live DVD? One of a kind? They're gonna play Six Degrees. It all adds up harmoniously. Ive got tickets in the mezzinaine so I guess ill find out.
Probably not. They're most likely to play the set they've been playing in Europe these days.
-
Strings? Choir? Live DVD? One of a kind? They're gonna play Six Degrees. It all adds up harmoniously. Ive got tickets in the mezzinaine so I guess ill find out.
Gawd, I hope not.
-

It's been done on Score, so that's not exactly one of a kind. ;)
Plus, it's too much new material to learn. I'd be very surprised if they deviated from their current setlist.
-
They won't play 6 Degrees. That doesn't make sense.
But I would still be surprised if the setlist is not tweaked. I'm trying to figure out how they would incorporate the strings and choir into the current 2nd set, other than Illumination Theory and maybe Space Dye Vest. I'm sure they are not there for one song.
-
Well, I think, if things go as I plan I can go to the show. I have a feeling this show can't be missed. Hope I can make it.

Thanks. Turkey, Istanbul. Will be here a week ago for a work meeting. If things go well I can make it.
-
Hurrah! Things lined up properly, and I just bought tickets for myself and my kids (18 and 23--this will likely be our last DT road trip all together)! We're way up in the balcony (that's all that's left), but in an opera house, those will still be decent seats. :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :tup :tup :tup :tup
-
Nice.
-
Can this show come any faster please?! :lol
-
I visited Boston Opera House today. It's mind blowing. I hope to see / meet all there!
-
Yeah, the I
Ages online make the place look stunning.
Eren, let me ask you this. Do you know where you will be situated on the stage?
-
Well, i heard they are going to do something extra special for the DVD recording. Heard they're gonna play set 1 and set 2 + the encore as most of us know 'em + a 2nd encore (or an added song to the encore). Wether it's true is something i can't tell you but that would be very cool.
If it's true, what would it be? What would you like to hear? ACOS (although i wonder how that song would work out with an orchestra, but DT can make everything sound awesome)?
-
Hopefully it would be 8V.
Where did you hear this?
-
I just noticed a bunch of seats now available in side orchestra sections. Didn't see these last few weeks, so maybe Live Nation made available another clump of tickets? These are REALLY DECENT seats, so if you haven't purchased your tickets yet to this historic show . . . now is the time.
-
What the fuck? I'm getting pretty sick of good seats becoming suddenly available.
-
Yeah, the I

Eren, let me ask you this. Do you know where you will be situated on the stage?
We'll be in the pit in front of the stage, with cameras looking at us.
I don't know if they are planning anything else than the current set but what I was informed is the set will be the set and we'll be a part of it.
-
Cool, thanks Eren!
-
So has this definitely been confirmed as being recorded for an official DVD?

The telling line from the DT blog is "This special homecoming will be captured and recorded for a later release.".
I may be wrong, but I interpret "captured" to mean "filmed". However, I don't know if "later release" necessarily means "DVD / Blue-Ray".
-
It sure does to me. Either way, this will truly be a Night
mare to Remember.
-
What the fuck? I'm getting pretty sick of good seats becoming suddenly available.
I'm pretty sure the new seats were released to accompany the "free trip to Boston show" contest that DT announced a few hours later on facebook. The contest blurb mentions that tickets are available, and thus spake zarathustra: "Let some good seats appear."
Of course, I like to think these new seats are meant to accommodate the family members of the Berklee students performing.
-
Ugh. I just found out that my friend will be attending this show. I am jealous enough to still feel envious. :sadpanda:

I can't wait for my first DT show!! I have been listening to them for awhile now as I am a big prog fan (also a big fan of improvisational acts like Umphrey's McGee and Phish). Will people be standing/dancing at this show? I don't really love sit down affairs but can understand why this might be one given the formal/stuffy nature of the venue. In any case I am psyched for my first show and feel like I am getting spoiled rotten with the setlist (particularly the SFAM stuff in the encore and tracks like Enigma Machine and IT from the new album). The inclusion of the Berklee Orchestra/Choir is just a cherry on top. Who knows, I may try to see them again in NY/LI the following weekend to experience a "regular" show. Happy to join this board and get immersed in such a talented band. DT have put themselves on a level with Gentle Giant and Umphrey's McGee in my ears as one of the tightest/most talented bands I have ever heard. Their virtuoso chops and stop on a dime changes are really what do it for me. That and I am a sucker for a good ballad after a band flexes it muscles in odd signature or extremely technical sections (makes for a nice contrast and provides the listener with a breather)... I hope to meet some folks on this board at the show. Sorry for the ramble!!
-
Just got my "Tickets Dispatched" email!!
-
Sweet. I got my tickets from Ticketbastard a month ago. I am excite!
-
Yeah cant wait! Two more weeks!!
-
I am flying over from Seattle for this show. I wasn't originally going to cause I couldn't find decent seats, but a few good seats went on sale on ticketmaster about a week ago so now I'm row Orch Center Row B! Super excited. Do you guys thing they are going to mix up the setlist at all for the special show?
-
I think I saw in an interview with JP that the setlist won't change at all this tour ( fine with me). I guess if they were to tweak it at all, this would be the show that they would do it for though...
-
There isn't any changes to the setlist, but there's a great amount of music that will include the orchestra.
-

That's my thought, I won't complain about the setlist at all, since it's a monster set. But I'm seeing them a few times this tour and wouldn't mind a few other songs for the Boston show, plus I'd be curious if they'd add or change any songs to fully take advantage of the orchestra. Like I think TSCO would be really cool with a choir! Or maybe they'd throw in 8VM, but I'm probably just wishful thinking lol!

I'm looking forward to hearing the contributions from the orchestra. I'm sure it's going to be great! Good luck to you, and have fun.

He composed / arranged the strings on DT12, The acoustic break on LALP, and is the one arranging the string parts for the Boston Show (Correct me on terms if I'm wrong)
-
oh neat

Who do I have to pay to hear TCOT at the Boston show? I would literally start bawling if I heard that.

Sorry, not gonna happen :-[
-

Pay for my ticket, hotel, food and airfare and I will make sure you hear TCOT at the show. I can't guarantee it will be live but I'll make sure you hear it :D

-
I guess you don't want to hear TCOT.
Oh well... offer retracted :P

On another note, It's been 10 years (at least according to setlist.fm) since they've played ACOS. Maybe time for another play during the Boston show?? :metal
-
Sorry, not gonna happen :-[
-
I saw ACOS live just a couple of weeks ago, umm, part 1 (that is) . . . performed by Portnoy, Chris Broderick and Billy . . . so . . .
yeah, not gonna happen on this DT leg.
-
Boston peeps, I plan on arriving in the city around 10am. Between then and meetup my girlfriend and I would like to do a walking tour, and a museum. For museums we are leaning towards the Natural Science Museum or the Science Museum. Others will be considered if you folks think they are really good though. And any recs on walking tours would be greatly appreciated.
-
Have you done the Freedom Trail? If not, do that. It's the Boston first time tourist thing to do.
-
Yeah, that's what we're looking into currently. As of now she downloaded audio for each stop, and I think we'll just grab a map and walk it ourselves.
-
Yup. They give out free maps at Park Street, where the walk starts.
-
Anybody interested in a pre-show beer somewhere around the venue?
-
Yes. I'm coming up and so there better well be a DTF dinner before hand!
I leave it to you Bostonians to decide when and where.
-
I'll work on it this week and post a few places locally. Then we can all agree on a few spots and pick one we can all agree upon.
-

Will this be open to anybody? Since I'm flying in I wont know anybody or have really much to do!
-
Sure! Well post a few different spots and see what people would like to hang out
-
Here is a couple Restaurant/Pubs close to The Opera House. Let me know if either you folks like them. Her is a link to both.

-
The Intermission Tavern looks awesome from the outside. My vote is on that one.
-
Cool. Everybody pick and we will all meet up there if you like it!
-
That place definitely looks neat. My only concern would be if it's TOO close to the venue and on the smaller side, might be hard to get a group in there.
-
We could get a head count and call in advance.

ok no I won't...

and you're going to LA show Jay? Riverside??

Tickets. Have. Arrived. :metal

No, bringing my wife and kids. I know Joe, and I'll definitely recognize Nick. Hopefully I'll run into them in the lobby.
Not sure what you look like Rumbo, but if you see a family there might be me. My twelve year old is as tall as me.
-
Tim, we will have to meet up at intermission. I'm pm my cell.

Got it. Hopefully before the show. We may be watching the Intermission video. It's supposed to be pretty funny.
-
I forgot about that. Yeah, so call me. I know you'd like to meet Nick.
-
and you're going to LA show Jay? Riverside??
Odds are against it.
-
Visiting the city just for the day, so with hotel check in, etc. I don't think I'll have time for meet up. Me and my GF will be in orchestra section, 10th row middle. It's her first DT show.
-
You know, the first time always hurts.

Especially when Evening Withs are DT going in dry.

Yeah, starting her off with an Evening With, plus orchestra/choir accompaniment will be something to remember for sure. #spoiled.

As am I (or is at As I am). My buddy who once was a touring drummer who now is a personal trainer will be with me.
-
Anyone going to Salvatore's Next door before the show ? IVe never been to the opera house but know that it is right next door not sure if it has a bar type area or just a restaurant?
-
Following.
-
Maybe is already clarified somewhere here in the forum and I missed, but anyone knows if it was confirmed that it will be a DVD filming from this show?
Thanks!
-

It's being filmed and recorded, but it's not necessarily the official DVD of the tour. It might just be a special show they want captured. It could definitely be the official one of this tour though.
I'm thinking this will be a special show, and then they could maybe film a special show fot their 30th next year a la "Score", though they might not want to to do the same thing again.
-
As per DT's home page. So as you can see in the bolded section that this show will be released at some point. How they release it I'm not sure.

Thanks to kingshmegland for the facts!
Thanks, guys! Let's hope for an official bluray release :metal
-
And a CD version. Or at least a DVD/CD package available in my country ::)
-
Back to the meetup really quick, if it's just Rumby, King, me and +1 then Intermission should be fantastic. What time would you guys like to get there at? Just trying to plan my day in the city and need to know when to be where.
-
I figure I and be in Boston by 4:30 so Rumbo what time is good for you?
-
I would definitely get some food at Intermission, so yeah, I could probably be there 4:30-5pm.
-
5pm should be good for me. And even that might be a little early as show isn't till 7:30.
-
This is gonna rock. How I will focus on my math quiz is beyond me.
-
Sounds like a plan. My drummer buddy will be with me. See you at 5pm.
-
Were are you meeting before the show?
-
Check the whole thread. I posted a link to the place.
-
If its anything like last time with LALP, then I cannot wait to watch and hear this on Blu Ray in June 2015!! :yarr

:lol

I REALLY hope it's not delayed like that again. If they put it out on schedule, I'd imagine it'd be released somewhere between Oct-Dec.
I looked at the seating chart according to ticketmaster and according to them there's only 5 seats left for this show, and they're in the corners of the top of the theater. It's going to be a packed show. Should have some great energy.
-
I don't know, it seems to me that us Northeasterners aren't exactly known for being so energetic. I suppose it depends on the venue. The Palladium has a much more energetic atmosphere (if for nothing else than its lack of air conditioning in the heart of July) than an all seated proscenial v venue like the Oakdale or an opera house. Hopefully I'm wrong and just rambling on out of my ass like the talkative nutjob I am, though.
-
I kinda wish they didn't play seated venues in America. I hate sitting down at concerts and if everyone behind me is sitting I'm the ass in the way >:(
-
Where: Intermission Theater
When: 5pm
Who: Nick+1, King+1, Rumborak
Anyone else want to come out? Also, who is in charge of calling in the reservation?
-
I'll call tomorrow after I get out of work. We'll see how many else post until then and see if they need reservations.
-
I'll see you all this Tuesday! It's sounding great!!

Dude, you do you. I went to the Toronto concert and some people were sitting or recording behind me but I don't give a damn. I paid good money to enjoy it 100% and that's what I did. This ain't church to sit down.
-
Maybe not, but it is a place o of worship.
Seriously though, I find it more enjoyable if I'm around people that are pumped. I'm probably self-conscious about making an ass of myself or something.
-
The suspense is killing me!!!

Except the world doesn't revolve around you. If the will of the people is to stand, you stand, if it's to sit you sit. In most cases I prefer to sit, but will do whatever is appropriate. You determining what everyone else should do based on your own personal preference is rude and arrogant. And everyone else paid good money too, and you don't seem to care about their enjoyment of the show.
Seriously though, I find it more enjoyable if I'm around people that are pumped. I'm probably self-conscious about making an ass of myself or something.
I too prefer this, though I seem to be in this weird world where you can sit and still be into the show and pumped. It only happens rarely, but it's awesome when it does. For Haken's 2nd show on Progressive Nation at Sea they played a weird venue. There was a barely raised stage and like a dance floor with a crescent moon of seating on the same level around the outside. Now if the dance floor people stood, the people sitting would not be able to see anything. So the guys on the dance floor sat down, and stayed down to my surprise. There were hands in the air, and people were obviously so into the music. Yet everyone in the place sat and was comfortable. It was perfect.
I'll see you all this Tuesday! It's sounding great!!

Looking great, honestly a lot more pieces than I was expecting, which is awesome!

A concert is not made for you to go sit your ass and be a bore. That's what church and school are for. "The will of the people" That's a term for tools that don't have a spine to do themselves and do what everyone else is doing. I paid good money to see them perform and enjoy myself. I hope others enjoy themselves too, but if to do so, I have to conform to what you deem "appropriate", then you've got another thing coming. Also, I don't expect everyone to do what I like, hence I didn't go around telling people to stand up.. but again, if in order for you to enjoy the show I have to sit down or work around your recording of the show, you have another thing coming.
"if everyone stands, you stand, if everyone else sits you sit" lol Nope, sorry, that's not how I live my life.

I'm not saying you should do what I think is appropriate, you should do what the audience of the show deems appropriate. Everyone there paid good money, and again, you are only thinking about yourself. You claim to hope other enjoy themselves, but don't care if your standing in their way leads otherwise. Actions speak louder than words. And finally, it again isn't up to you, I, or anyone alone to determine what is appropriate for where.
In the end, you can do whatever you wish, but if you're one of the only people standing in a large seated crowd, and you wonder what "asshole" had security come to give you the choices of taking a seat of leaving (the policy at 90% of venues where everyone has chosen to sit), and I'm there, you can bet it was me. :D
Edit: Grizz, while I agree with your point (and now deleted comment), please don't personally attack other users with your comments.

I have to agree with the sentiment though that "only seating" venues make the concert a lot less exciting.

Yes, typically that is an unfortunate side effect most of the time. I'm usually banging or tapping something an entire show or singing along, but tend to be in the minority. While I think that's generally fine for Dream Theater, and for this show with the strings coming in seating seems right, in the future I think for live releases they should definitely resort to standing room venues, at least up front.

Metallica's S&M comes to mind, some people tried to do the head banging and rocking out but it just doesnt work in that setting.
As for the thread, I am super jealous of the people going to this concert. If it had been a weekend, I would have tried to make the trip.

A prog metal show deems people stand. A jazz club get your seat on.
24 hours from now food, beer and conversations shall be had!

Where: Intermission Theater
When: 5pm
Who: Nick+1, King+1, Rumborak
Anyone else want to come out? Also, who is in charge of calling in the reservation?
Do you mean Intermission Tavern? I may head there depending on when I get into the city.

This. I really would rather everyone standing because that's how I feel a rock show should be, but I'm not going to block everyone else behind me just because I want to be selfish and stand. When they first come out with TEI/The Mirror/Overture 1928, I'm not gonna help it and am gonna cheer and jump up. But I won't stay up for the whole show. Unless of course everyone decides to stand and then it's a real party
-
My wife can't make the show tonight and as such I have an extra (Orch Left Row S). I am happy to give it away to anybody who needs an extra. Preferably somebody who wants to stand and dance like me... ;) In all seriousness, I hope the folks in the Orchestra are standing and rocking, but if the vast majority of people are seated then I will acquiesce and sit down. I can't wait for my first DT show regardless!! Let me know if anybody needs an extra ticket...

Hey everyone,
I'm a little lot late to the party here, but I wanted to find out about any formal gatherings before the show. I'm also too lazy to read through the previous pages. I anticipate coming in via the T around 5:30 at Park Station.
Thanks in advance. I'd be nice to meet some fellow DT fans (for a change)!
-
PolishFalcon,
it's not a "formal" gathering, but a bunch of us will meet from 5pm on at Intermission Tavern.

Cool, that's where I'll head then when I get in.
Thanks!

Hopefully the place isn't super-packed. Other than Shmeg I don't know what any of you look like!
-
So is there going to be a barricade to separate the ensemble from the crowd?
-
Yeah, I wonder. Doesn't that also mean nobody actually gets close to the band?
-
Being an opera house, does it have a proper orchestra pit?
EDIT: Answered my own question. I suppose it'll be set up like this

-
Hey everybody, there is not reservations at the Tavern. first con=me, first serve. I would think a Tuesday night will not be too bad. See you there!
-
I'm really confused on the set up. I feel likey 9th row seat just got further away.
-
The two images don't seem to match up at all.
-
Not at all.
-
Not at all. Could the first one be a rehersal hall somewhere in town?
-
My best guess is that the first image is from another venue they used for practicing with the ensemble. Here's another image of the Opera House:
https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2718/4112619906_756c31f04d.jpg
So yeah, 9th row might be still a good distance away, TAC.
-
That's not too bad. As long as my kids can see.
I see Eren in the thread. Eren, where in town did you guys rehearse?
-
The two images don't seem to match up at all.
The first image is from House of Blues in Boston.

Venue looks nice. I get more jelly every minute.

To everyone that's going: have fun! Should be great!

Pretty sure i read the orchestra area is semi under the stage
-
Nick is posting from the Freedom Trail. Bostonians beware.
-
Just ran into Jordan strolling by our hotel by the opera house. ...could not have been nicer to my wife and me. Very stoked for the show after hearing how excited he is.......
-
The first picture is my rehearsal with orchestra only at a Berklee facility. Second one is from yesterday, rehearsal with band at House of Blues. Tonight, opera house!!
We ran through our part yesterday so smooth it was awesome. Everybody was really happy. I have no doubt you will all love it tonight. The venue is gorgeous as well.

My setlist prediction:
Everything the same except
1-Adding Spirit Carries On After dance of eternity
2-Remove Lie from the setlist
3-Swap Along for the Ride with Space Dye Vest in the setlist order
-
JP just posted a pic of a camera on facebook, a camera as in a film camera for recordng a DVD!
If they change the set at all, i hope they just add more from DT12.

I heard from a source they wanted to really make it a truly special dvd, so they will be playing The Spirit Carries On, and WIMH/TTTSTA. Because no Dream Theater dvd is complete without those three songs.

Haha are you serious? They played The Spirit Carries On to death (Dramatic Tour of Events, Black Clouds tour, Chaos in Motion tour and also the Octavarium tour) and also appeared on Live at Luna Park.
I wonder what they'll do with OTBOA and BIA since those songs also appeared on LALP.

:hat Sarcasm green would have been too easy ;)
That's actually the best thing about this DVD (the fact that those three songs aren't on it :lol).
Apparently OTBOA and BAI are the new consistent repeats.

Whoever designed the concert program can't spell Massachusetts :)

:lol
Great venue
-
Is this the show that was going to be filmed for the DVD?
-
I just know that some poor soul has stayed away from the setlist and YouTube videos and just had the entire setlist spoiled for him when they opened that booklet :lol
Also, at least people won't be clamoring for setlist updates, as we know that it is the same already.

They are absolutely crushing Trial Of Tears right now.
MM and JM are in the zone.

Did the orchestra play FAS?
-
I'm standing behind the mixing desk looking at the split screen for the video editing. This DVD will be gorgeous.
Finishing Lie now. Setlist is the same.
-
Will this be an official release or part of the Official Bootleg series?
Also Im assuming The orchestra only played FAS with DT correct?
-
Which song(s) does the ensembles perform with the band? Judging by JR's video clip I saw earlier today, at LEAST "Illumination Theory".
-Marc.
-
I assume the guys are all busy watching the show, and we'll get all the details after the show's over.

IT, and all of the SFAM tunes.
Awesome concert. Everybody was dead on.

Oh God, such anticipation to see if James hit the F5 or not at the end of the video and it ended just seconds before :lol Did he sing the F5?
The orchestra section gave me so many chills, though. It was absolutely beautiful :hefdaddy
-
The orchestra played on
FaS IT and SFaM.
It was fucking tits.
Now if you'll excuse me it's ringing deep inside my head.
-
BTW, I fucking better be on this DVD. I had a prime spot on the mezzanine level, and probably the only person with a blue shirt.
-
Nobody gets on a rock video with that sweater Ralf. Not metal enough. :lol
-
I put the nerd back into nerd metal! :lol
-
The orchestra's sounding great, but you stopped recording at about the worst time, rumby. :lol I wanted to hear the high bit, dammit!
-
I'm speechless! What a show. The band sounded great. James was nails...confident, and hitting the notes with conviction.
Same setlist, but just fantastic. The video content, the lighting and stage design, the orchestra and choir were all incredible. My prediction is "Live from the Boston Opera House" will be the 2nd best live DT DVD behind Score.
I'm inspired and content....and going to bed! 'Night all.
-
They did sound great. So from IT and the SFAM encore the strings and choir played with DT.
BTW I could see DT play BAL on every tour. What a great song live.
-
I liked the cameras that were hung on a line. Cool placements for them.
Jordan looking at his keyboard camera was hilarious.
-
Forgot to say I'll post some pics tomorrow.
-
The orchestra's sounding great, but you stopped recording at about the worst time, rumby. :lol I wanted to hear the high bit, dammit!
I knew my phone's microphone would crap out once the band kicked in, so I stopped :lol
-
Amazing show! Whole band was on fire. James hit absolutely everything, and everyone was playing with intensity and passion.
As others have mentioned, the Orchestra and Choir were very low in the live mix. Nevertheless, there were some great moments from them. My seats were in a position where I couldn't see the orchestra pit at all, but it seemed to me that they were playing throughout the Awake set. as well, though perhaps not used as much as some may have thought they might be. Choir didn't come on stage until Illumination Theory, and was most effective there and in Finally Free.
Highlights:
-Trail of Tears
-Enigma Machine drum solo
-Along for the Ride
-Space Dye Vest
-Illumination Theory
-The Dance of Eternity
-Finally Free. The moment when the final "This feeling inside me" explodes in with full band, orchestra, and choir was unreal.
-
Sound-wise it was okish I thought. The PA system was overtasked with the volume quite often, making it jarring without ear protection. The ushers all stayed outside.
-
I was right under you Ralf and at times it was ear piercing. I assumed it was bouncing off the ceiling over me.
-
Show was spectacular. Venue more breathtaking in person. Got picture with frank solomon (before show) and eren signed my playbill (after show). Bravo eren! Orchestra played fas, il and scenes encore. Choir stood before screen on stage and elevated the songs to majestic heights. Kinda disappointed that orchestra was hidden in pit, so only front row could see the performance. Guess we will wait for dvd to see it. Funny how this thread revived the stand v. sit debate earlier. Ive always advocated standing at rock shows but tonight would have benfitted from everyone sitting during orchestra section as the audience would have at least seen eren conducting. Glad to chat with others who traveled far (seatle, los angeles). special tshirts commemorating tonight sold out fast, hope avail elsewhere.
-
Aww, I thought the orchestra would play on the Awake songs as well :-\ Anyway, can't wait to see/hear the recording of this show!
-
Ok...I'm an idiot... what is "FaS"?? :loser:
-

This. I was totally hoping we'd get an orchestrated version of Scarred. The ending just sounds epic in my head with choir and strings.
-
Ok...I'm an idiot... what is "FaS"?? :loser:
False Awakening Suite, ie. the intro music for the show.
-
Sounds absolutely incredible. Yes, Finally Free was made for an orchestra. I was always a little disappointed in the obviousness of their song choices with the Octavarium orchestra - it was still badass, and I know they didn't have time for more, but playing a symphonic Vacant and not following it up with a symphonic Stream of Consciousness feels like such a tease. That song would've been beautiful with an orchestra. There's something quite symphonic about it already, moreso than any of their other instrumentals - False Awakening Suite notwithstanding! Scenes from a Memory has a similar quality, and while I'm always a little split on The Dance of Eternity, The Dance of Eternity with a full orchestral complement sounds like beautiful chaos. DVD's going to be incredible - roll on 2016.
-
Do we know who recorded? I hope and pray that it wasnt OtE...
-
SFAM was the perfect choice, some of those melodies lend themselves so well to the symphonic treatment.
-
The question is, did JLB hit the money notes in IT, Scarred and The MIrror? :)
-
The other question is, did JLB at any point state that they were filming the show for DVD? I cannot work out why they didnt announce it officially (other than that little one line in the News section a month or two back). They made a huge deal about filming LALP. This didnt seem to be as big a deal for them :\
-
Yes James did announce it plus there was a billion cameras and microphones set up everywhere.
-
The question is, did JLB hit the money notes in IT, Scarred and The MIrror? :)
Let's put it this way, James was convincingly spectacular the entire show! Yes, he hit "SalVAAAtion" in IT and offered a very strong vocal performance of the Awake and SFAM commemoration segments as well.

I agree there was not much fanfare about the filming of last night's show. Whereas the filming of Luna Park was well advertised.
Yes James did announce it plus there was a billion cameras and microphones set up everywhere.
Early on in the first set, James clearly stated they were making a DVD of the show. I noticed 2 camera booms, one mounted/controlled from stage left near JM and JR, the other mounted/controlled from the right aerial box (this camera often was lowered to within inches of my head 5th row JP's side :lol)
-
Amazing show! Just wow!
-
Yes James did announce it plus there was a billion cameras and microphones set up everywhere.
So maybe they can get a good recording of the crowd noise this time?
So the orchestra only played for the end of the set? THey didnt play along with anything until IT? That stinks, i didnt expect the whole show with them (Although it would have been awesome), but I was hoping for at least the whole second set/encore.
-
Do we know who recorded? I hope and pray that it wasnt OtE...
According to the Playbill, the Concert Film was directed by Pierre and Fracois Lameroux. Not sure if they were in chage of the production per se, or if they are charged with filming the DVD. Either way, the film shots I was watching were breathtaking. This DVD will kill Luna Park.
-
Amazing show! Just wow!
Agreed. I thought each members performance was flawless. My 1st time seeing them in over 10 years and my wife's first time. We're both still stunned at how perfect they play
-
You can really tell how much JM loves playing with MM. JM is hard to read, but he cannot hide this.
-
Tim I was looking for you before the show but I couldn't find you!
-
Got there at 7:20 went right to our seats
-
You missed some good pre-show beer!
-
He had his kids. Not bad food either for a dive!
-
Was a great show , 6th row orchestra in front of JP made my night! ( thanks Sad Wings)
Sound was good but they were having a problem with one or some of the PA , even the orchestra was was buzzing at times but over all one of the best sounding shows I heard since I seen them at Berlkee , Cant wait to hear the mix on DVD!!!

You missed some good pre-show beer!
Ended the night with some Trooper beer when I got home!

No prob. I agree about the sound. MM's snair sounded far too hissy and rattley, particularly toward the end of Trial of Tears. I could say the same for some of the YouTube clips I've seen, so I think it may be his drum setup. Aside from FAS and Illumination Theory, the orchestra and choir didn't add much, but that's not a huge surprise. This blew the Score show away, if by the Awake section alone. It was the best I've seen them and makes up for the disappointing and lopsided shows I attended on the SC tour.
-

Who'd you talk to from Seattle? I flew from Seattle also to see them last night. I'm curious if it was me you were talking to haha! I
-
Kinda surprising the Orchestra/Choir wasn't in on the Awake set. Sure, The Mirror and Lie don't really setup for it, but LSOAD/Scarred/SDV are perfect for it. WTH??
-

Pierre and Francois Lameroux are part of the Fogo Labs production company. They were the ones that were involved in Rush's R30 and Snakes and Arrows Live DVDs which BTW were nicely filmed IMO. I agree with you, this DVD will blow Luna Park completely.
-
This show topped the Palladium show as my favorite DT concert. Incredible set, they were flawless all night.
Had 3rd row, Orchestra Left. The 2 rows in front of us sat for the first set which was a little weird, but maybe I'll get on the DVD because of it. There was some guy that must of been a Berklee teacher that kept coming down the aisle watching the orchestra. JP saw him and gave him a big smile. Older guy, balding on top, long gray hair in back.
Ushers had no issues with people taking pics, but they would not allow videotaping.
And what a gorgeous venue for a show.
-
Indeed, there were some PA issues. Seemed to be harsh distortion on the tweeters, most noticeable during SDV, which sounded like my beginner's Yamaha keyboard on "Brite Piano" going through my beginner's guitar amp on overdrive.
A saw a few older ladies which surprised me because there were no men with them. :lol
Berklee parents?
Here are some sick photos, and maybe a video of IT after I edit the parts in which I hid my phone in my pocket to stand and cheer:

I'm so glad that this got to be my first DT concert! It was a fantastic show, and I'm sure it'll only be better once the DVD comes out and some of the kinks caused by how freaking loud it was can be worked out. I think Trial of Tears was the best song to be honest. They just nailed it and it really is one of the best songs to showcase every single member of the band. My favorite one single moment might have been in Space Dye Vest when James came in absolutely slaying "There's no one to take my blame!" That was goosebump city. I really can't wait to see how Illumination Theory comes out on the DVD because I'm sure that it'll end up being my other other favorite moment ;D

Call me a spoil sport, but the whole playing with an orchestra or whatever thing is kind of a "been there, done that" thing for DT. If they were gonna do a special show that was a bit different, I still wish they'd consider doing some stripped down shows again like the Rotterdam one from 5YIAL. That kind of thing is waaaay overdue.
-
Aww, I thought the orchestra would play on the Awake songs as well :-\ Anyway, can't wait to see/hear the recording of this show!
This. I was totally hoping we'd get an orchestrated version of Scarred. The ending just sounds epic in my head with choir and strings.
Agreed. Any chance that they were in fact playing but it was mixed too low end the PA was overtaxed? Might the sound be better on the DVD? I'm also surprised that they didn't do an improv jam or extended intro to Scarred as they have on previous tourss. Such an intro could've been boring, yes, but it also could've been fun. Will be very curious how it comes out on the DVD as it's my favorite tune from them and none of the live versions that they've released have been that spectacular.
-
JP and JLB have really similar shirts! I see they all generally favor the JM-look now (almost all black) :lol
I remember the good ol' days when JLB had yellow pants and JP had blond and orange highlights, and of course Portnoy's colored beards :lol

They only did it throughout the entire Dramatic Turn of Events world tour! It makes up like four whole songs on Luna Park. Rotterdam did have a pretty special vibe to it, I bloody love that set, but I think any attempt to channel that specific vibe would be both "been there, done that," just like you said, and doomed to failure anyway. Never repeat a holiday!
I think an orchestra was just plain logical, given the album they just released. And it sounds a lot, lot tighter than Score - and more creative. The Octavarium Orchestra was basically session musicians, doing a pretty good job with limited rehearsal time. This time, they've got Eren Basbug on the case, who's been collaborating with the band for quite a while, now, and from what I gather they've had a lot more time to practice. Eager to find out just how they used that choir - that's brand new.
-
There was some guy that must of been a Berklee teacher that kept coming down the aisle watching the orchestra. JP saw him and gave him a big smile. Older guy, balding on top, long gray hair in back.
That was likely Frank Soloman, the band's manager. He was all over the place last night.

I agree with Shmev to an extent. The only songs where the orchestra and choir made a huge impact last night were FAS and Illumination Theory. I enjoyed last nights show far more than the score show since it had a much stronger set list, but thought we could've gotten definitive versions of the last three awake songs, and I'm not sure that we did.

Erm, no, I think that stripped down means "sans production team." The closest thing to that done in recent years was the 2010 tour, including the one-offs and openings.
Everyone keeps saying that the orchestra played FAS. Did they really? I didn't think that they were even in the pit until at least the second set

Im wondering that too, but we all know the orchestra can play it from the youtube video so it would make a lot of sense for them to be doing it.
-
FAS was just an intro tape.
I was able to see the orchestra pit the whole show, and I can confirm that they didn't start playing at all until IT.
-
Bummer :tdwn

Well, they weren't even in the pit until after intermission :lol
BTW, that guy who posted recently on DTF about his tribute band (the one that tries to look like DT): Let's be honest, after all those great tributes in that video segment, their band was put there for comedic relief. Everybody around me started laughing, saying stuff like "Oh god" and the like.

So, I was in the bar/restaurant next door and Right Mezzanine, Row H, seat 14. Did I nearly meet anyone?

They turned off the video screens, they dialled the lights right down, how little production team do you want? That's about as sans-production-team as you can get without turning the amps off!
-

I was next door eating dinner and had a couple ale's before I went in the lobby.
-
I think realistically, what is Dream Theater, a band that has been continuously touring for 25 years, still going to do that is completely new?
What they *could* do though is do something like Pink Floyd did with Live At Pompeii, i.e. a concert at an unusual venue.

I think that the OP had something more along the lines of static lighting & an unusual setlist in mind

They should play on a barge in the middle of a river...
wait.... nevermind.

They could do like Maiden and do tours focusing on specific eras. IMO, the anniversary blocks on this tour were not publicized enough. I spoke to quite a few people who had no idea that large portions of the show would be dedicated to Awake and SFaM material. The Awake block is a much bigger draw to me then the orchestra, especially given how little play the last three songs have gotten over the years. are they worried that publicizing the anniversary blocks might turn some people away?

1. The "blocks" aren't supposed to be the centerpieces of the set -- the reason for the tour is to support the new album, but with this being the anniversary of two seminal DT albums, the set pays tribute to those albums in a comparatively small way. The "blocks" were a surprise, too -- we only found out about them on the first night of the tour. Obviously, the bits of Awake and SFAM are not supposed to be the reasons you see the show.
2. How would you publicize that? "We're going to perform a fraction of Awake and SFAM on this tour"? It's like a half hour of the first and twenty-five minutes of the second -- it's nothing game-changing like performing all of Awake or all of SFAM would be.
-

I agree with Kev too on the Orchestra it wasnt a big deal to me either its all been done as far as i was concerned im not big with rock bands playing with orchestras anyway.
Id love to see a stripped down show too, although this was NOT the occasiion for it. Perhaps a Holidays tour would be cool like in 1998
And Sad Wings, i think we DID get definitive live versions of the Awake songs.
Though, I think there was a missed oppurtunity with the orchestra there to possibly do a second encore and get a definitive version of The Count Of Tuscany. The strings and choir wouldve been a great complement to the song.
And i just cant say how good this band is. Really, its incredible . The last two tours have been two of my favorites. Last nights show was one of my favorite all time concerts by ANY band, and it had nothing to do with the orchestra. The band was spot on. The stage and screen was incredible. Not sure how DT will top this tour.

That's still merely an hour of material or almost half the show. Why not just say we'll be doing quite a bit of material from one album that's 20 years old and one album that's 15 years old this year. Similar to what Maiden did in 2005 when they stated they would be playing material from the first four albums. I could see them not wanting to do that as it could make them look like a nostalgia act, but it would give fans a better idea of what to expect.
-
Well yeah, that Maiden tour consisted entirely of material from the first four albums. That was the point of that tour. The point of this tour isn't to see a bit of music from Awake and a bit of music from SFAM, so DT isn't publicizing it that way.
-
On interviews they ARE saying that they are playing several songs from both Awake and SFaM because of their anniversaries, though. I mean, not everyone who is going to see the shows watches those interviews but they have stated it countless times, and they even said it before the tour started iirc. If the point is that they're not advertising the show as part DT12, part Awake, part SFaM, then yes, that is true, most likely because they're aiming at having this tour be DT12's tour and because they're playing songs from other albums (BC&SL, FII and ADToE) as well, but it's not like they're keeping the anniversary nods as an absolute secret.
-
I think it's pretty brilliant that they're doing the "cover music from albums 15 and 20 years ago". It usually means you get something you know you'll like. Hell, the tour for the next album is likely to have a good number of SDOIT and FII songs on it. Works for me!

Well, I dunno. They may not be plastering it on billboards, but considering they play 5 songs in a row from one album, and 4 from another, I think that's pretty significant. Add to that fact that songs from only 6 albums are played, with 9 of the 18 played songs being from the anniversary spots (50% of the setlist by number, if not by length), I'd say that many people are coming to see the anniversary sections.
-
The part I didn't understand during the orchestral section is, why was JR playing along? I would be bummed if half of what I heard was keyboard strings.

Thanks Grizz. Nice to have a taste of the DVD. I'm not a huge fan of overdubs, and JLB mostly sounds amazing, but I hope they fix the "money" after "Salvation" (his voice cracked a bit). Everything else was spot on!
-
I don't see JR playing; I think it's just part of the PA issues. The audio came out surprisingly clear; to the ear, it was a bit harsh, distorted, and muddy, and I could hardly hear Berklee.
Sorry for any viewers with motion sickness, or without the desire to hear my dad screaming, me shouting, or me straining my voice to sing harmonies. I use a Galaxy S4. Check back tomorrow; it should be in full HD.
I'm willing to bet that there will be some overdubbing; there were some shaky spots, particularly in The Dance of Eternity.
-

How weird. I just checked my own video, and yeah, you're right, Jordan wasn't playing. There was some other song though where he was playing along with the orchestra.
-
Just got home, still have unpacking to do, but let me post my quick thoughts.
Performance and setlist wise this was an AWESOME Dream Theater show. However it was a terrible special event, and the sound had major issues. Starting in the first set JP was WAY too loud, and the whole band in general was a bit too loud. Come the 2nd set the choir was BARELY heard at times, and the strings were non-existent. In the end, this was nothing more than a Dream Theater show with some more people to look at. And how they utilized the strings... dreadful. Instead of having them play parts of songs from Lifting Shadows forward, they had them (I believe, again, couldn't hear them) play all/most parts on everything from Illumination Theory on. It would have been especially good if they had switched out Mirror/Lie for Trial of Tears or Breaking All Illusions to make even further use of the strings. There are pros and cons of Mike being out of the band, a con being they likely wouldn't play Space Dye-Vest, but a pro being I am sure he would have made much better use of this opportunity.
That aside, everyone sounded great, with James sounding near the absolute top of his game again. Had this been a local show I would have been more than pleased, but as someone who traveled a good distance for a special event, I'm definitely a little disappointed.
-
After being at their last American special event (2012-07-19 - To Live Forever, Paradigm Shift feat. Tony Levin, & 21st Century Schizoid Man feat. Crimson Projekt - Paramount, Huntington, NY, US) in which I could only hear Petrucci (and his reverb off the wall behind me), I didn't think it was particularly bad for the most part. Why Space Dye Vest sounded like it was through my Johnson Amplifier is beyond me though.
-
Call me a spoil sport, but the whole playing with an orchestra or whatever thing is kind of a "been there, done that" thing for DT. If they were gonna do a special show that was a bit different, I still wish they'd consider doing some stripped down shows again like the Rotterdam one from 5YIAL. That kind of thing is waaaay overdue.
A stripped down set won't make sense in a tour supporting an album where the centerpiece is Illumination Theory.

You could say that about every album. I think a one night show can be whatever their hearts desire.

Not really. In DT12, Illumination Theory is the definitive centerpiece. So if you tour for the album, people would be anticipating to watch IT played live. For a lot of them, they would be hearing and watching it live for the first time. And it would be such a disservice to the audience if IT is not played in its full glory because of a stripped down show. Which is why I don't think it is appropriate for this tour.
Stripped down shows would work. But not when IT is the centerpiece of the show.

What section? He may have just been playing along because that's how his patches are set up, and he needs to keep up the order and routine to keep the spot, but they probably won't mix them in for the DVD. That would be my guess.
And so is it confirmed that the orchestra did not play FAS? Were people confusing it with the orchestral only backing tape they're using?

Exactly. And I don't even mean doing such a show in the middle of the tour. Hell, they could do a few shows after the tour, just to do a few stripped down shows or something else different like that. That would be neat. But that doesn't change the fact that I still love this tour's set list and am thrilled to be seeing them next weekend for the first time in 10 years. :metal
-
Sorry guys, my video got removed and there's no option that says "I don't own this recording but neither does WMG."

From what I remember, the pit was empty and the upstage barren until intermission, when risers were added and the orchestra may have entered. After Awake, the choir entered the stage and they played along to IT and SFaM. IIRC the FaS was an orchestra-only intro tape like 6DoIT.
-
And so is it confirmed that the orchestra did not play FAS? Were people confusing it with the orchestral only backing tape they're using?
I was expecting them to play it. I mean, wasn't that the point of them being there?

Yeah, this was an overall disappointing use of the opportunity Dream Theater had. FAS should have definitely been played by the orchestra/choir, as well as some of the Awake tracks (why the heck was this not done???).
-
But that doesn't change the fact that I still love this tour's set list and am thrilled to be seeing them next weekend for the first time in 10 years. :metal
Has it really been that long? Wow!
You will be blown away!
Enjoy!

It wouldn't have been practical for them to play one song (which would have been more trouble to sync for video), and then leave, and then come back for the later set. And FAS is already a tour exclusive orchestral only recording conducted by Eren, so I don't think it was necessary. It wouldn't have gained as much as having them playing on other songs.
-
I understand, Blob, especially the syncing part. I guess it was an expectation I had.
-
It's wasn't a far out expectation given that FAS is perfectly suited to orchestra, I think it's just logistics more than anything. If they were able to use the orchestra for the entire show, it probably would have happened.
-
I agree Blob. I really wasn't expecting the orchestra to be used for FAS exactly for logistical reasons. However I guess my expectations/hopes were they would play for the Awake songs. I did observe the orchestra members take their places with their instruments just prior to the start of Act II. However, I was definitely surprised that they just sat waiting and did not appear to accompany during the 5 Awake songs.
BTW, awesome job with the opening album cover video, as well as the taxi scenes....Outstanding job!!! :hefdaddy
-
Yeah, Blob, your videos looked great as always, and it was great to see so much of your stuff featured in intermission.
On that note, THANK GOD they got rid of that ridiculous cube system and went to a normal video screen for this tour.
-
I actually thought the Cube thingies were pretty cool as it was a nice departure from what they had done before.
But the current large screen was unbelievable. And the whole backdrop as well was spectacular.
I loved when the put the Graffiti style still image on the screen so it blended in with the backdrop. I thought that was neat.
-
+1 for Blob's vids
-
I actually thought the Cube thingies were pretty cool as it was a nice departure from what they had done before.
Cube things were different, they were stylish, and they were also completely horrible to watch videos on. Cool concept, just didn't work well I thought.

I liked the primary plus dual secondary screen concept they used in the past.

I knew it's gonna be perfect.... :tup

This 1000%.

The new screen is 10 times better than the cube screens.
-
Glad I got too see a couple of great moments over again till youtube took em off thanks to all posted those I'm still talking about this show to whoever will listen feels like the old days lol!!!!
-
I wasnt crazy about the cubes either, but they were cool for a tour. Something different and gave the set some personality. But yea, Im good with one and done with the cubes.
I have really tried not to watch videos or see pics from this tour so i dont spoil myself withe how the set looks and the videos for the songs... but i did see the screen they are using and it looks very big and nice. Im pumped to finally see them tonight and then again on monday.
-
Some of the closeups are stunning on the big screen. JP has a GoPro mounted on his mic boom stand, that allows for some really cool solo closeups.

I agree 50%.
Blob, which videos did you work on this tour? Which songs? [Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere here]

I did the False Awakening intro video + the taxi videos (intros to DT12 songs + Along For The Ride)

Nah, I never finished making that one. :neverusethis:

very cool, Blob! Well done, indeed.
Further reflections on the show: I was surprised by how well "Looking Glass" works in a live setting. Not my fave track on the album, but it really grabbed me live. So enjoyable to watch the tight live performance of DT firing on all levels.
Also, I can not emphasize enough how much Space Dye Vest added to the setlist, truly a highlight of the tour. It really infused the evening with so much emotion. Its slow tempo is a tangible dynamic that stands out in the high energy show that is Dream Theater. It really gave the setlist room to breathe and grow.
I would urge DT to consider playing Anna Lee and Wither in future setlists to capture this same dynamic. I think they will create a positive and powerful reaction in most cities.

I bet the 2nd run through may also have a unplayed gem. It would make sense.
And yes, Knife, Space Dye Vest was a stunning moment in the concert.
I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed The Shattered Fortress live

I think the setlist as a whole worked really well. I mean sure its heavy on three albums, but the flow and song choices worked well IMO and still gave a good sense of the overall feel of what DT sounds like. And yes, SDV worked really well in the set and I was a bit surprised as to how good it was live and the Petrucci spot at the end was really powerfull.

BTW, I had forgotten what a sausage fest DT concerts are. Holy crap :lol
That's interesting, because according to Mangini a LOT more girls are showing up. Maybe only in Europe though, they obviously have better taste in music over there judging by the turnouts at metal festivals.

Oh man not again . It would be nice for once if the next DVD had a nice balance of all instruments. Someone besides JP needs to be in charge of the sound editing.

There was a significant amount of females at the NYC show. Very surprising to me.

My dad jokingly pointed to the stage-left choir and said "That's the highest concentration of females at any DT show."

The live mix has nothing to do with the DVD mix.

OK, but I'm noticing a trend. If DT believes in "WWRD", they would know Alex Lifeson would never be so loud so as to drown out Neil and Geddy.

Little snippet of DT and Berklee folks practicing TDOE. Really cool, cant wait to see this DVD.

Oh, by the way, how long would you expect we would have to wait for the BR & stuff?
End of Summer?
Or directly for XMas?

I am anxiously waiting for the official announcement. Richard Chycki wrote in his official page some weeks ago he's working on the postproduction. I hope the guys make an official statement about the release around June. Can't freaking wait!!

Listening to the bootleg now. The snare and the
drum cymbal sounds in general don't suck. (EDIT: Just got to Enigma Machine. The toms actually do sound like detergent bottles.) Let's hope they aren't overprocessed.
I also hope Petrucci isn't too high like he was live and on Luna Park.
NOW FOR SOME SPOILERS:
It's raining on the streets of Boston city

The addition of another live release, perhaps on 2015, to compliment Boston Opera House with the songs from the 2nd European Leg, would be just incredible.
Anyways, my biggest concern at this point is how good production will be soundwise. I enjoyed Luna Park and believe it's the best sound MM has had on DT up to this point. I just expect this Blu-Ray to sound as good, if not better.
-
So long as they don't bury the keys like they did at times on the Luna Park release, I'll take another one that sounds like that. :coolio
-
The audience was quiet enough in Boston. No need to mute it.
-
Any news on this DVD?

There will be news...
Soon.

Tomorrow is August 1st. I think "soon" has come and gone. Any news?

Calm your spirits and prepare yourself for a LALP-level. If things go differently you'll be pleasently surprised.

From MM's Facebook page
"Cheers to everyone that had fun with us during on of our shows thus far on tour. I already want to get practicing, but a couple of days of not playing at all is good. I did a quick check on our Boston DVD footage. I am stunned about the look and sound of this current tour's performance being captured like 'that' is all I'll say. The release of it is moving very fast. Really fast. Those in the Southern and Pacific Rim areas of the World will get to see this production in person next.... Check the DT FB for announcement dates on both. I do not know them."

:caffeine: appropriate?

I still stand by my Christmas guess, even though the fact that he was give something reasonably finished to see is... Interesting.
