Title: The Singing Game
Post by: TheAtliator on November 06, 2013, 09:03:33 PM
For singers and non-singers alike! A very simple game- one person names a line in a DT song, and everyone who wants to participate shares a small piece of audio or video of them singing that part. The person who came up with the line chooses a winner and that winner names the next line. The winner you choose is entirely your choice; it can be the person who sang the line the most on-key, most entertaining, most professionally, the funniest, most like the original, best overall- whatever you want!

You can upload your video or audio to whatever site we can all easily access and hear. Also, if you'd like to choose a line that's already been done before, that's perfectly cool if there's more people who want to try it, or want to try it again.

First line..... "Shaman take my HAAAAANDD!!"

Go!

Yeah, that's the thing. I'll definitely participate... SOMETIME... I'll probably record it tomorrow night. Even though I'm sick, but who knows how that'll turn out. Maybe it'll sound cool.  ;D

No one wants to be the first one to subject their singing to DTF's critical ear?

Fine, I'll go first.

Just a few things:
1. I am not at all a singer. I have had no vocal lessons or anything. My singing experience is entirely "singing along with music I like." Just wanted to clarify exactly where I'm coming from.
2. This is the best of several tries. Whenever I do record my voice, sometimes I think it's fairly good and sometimes I hate it. I can't always find a singing voice that sounds good to me. And I think this is also demonstrated by the fact that some people have complimented my singing voice and others have insulted it. Again, I'm not at all a trained singer, so my voice is very inconsistent.
3. Please please please for god's sake be honest. Like if this completely sucks tell me that (obviously tell me why it sucks so I know what to improve, but definitely tell me it sucks if it does). I don't want to wind up being hopelessly deluded about my singing abilities like the infrequent DTF visitor who will remain nameless.

Alright, here is my lovely and delightful rendition of "Shaman take my hand" from Bridges In the Sky: https://youtu.be/ecZlEgEs5dM (https://youtu.be/ecZlEgEs5dM)

Cause apparently I'm not giving the guys (vast majority of DTF) a chance after this. It's also a play on the extra attention girls tend to get on typically male dominated forums. Interesting that most DT cover bands I know of (2, that is), have a female singer.

Logix, it's just the absurd high notes he does (being male) that are more normal for a woman's voice. Or James is a bit female.

Thank you btw, but TheAtliator should decide on this right?

^ Too bad most of videos/files are not working anymore :-\

As for the lady's attempt: it was really a nice one with that A# touch, even if the real version is an octave higher and ends with a troublesome A4. I won't even attempt to do it since my range goes up to F4 at best.

Yea the real version is A4. And she sang a Bb not an A# :glare:

Yeah I was gonna mention that too, it was definitely the right octave. It could be mistaken for an octave lower because, at least to me, it sounded like you didn't have to strain your voice NEARLY as much as JLB or any guy would have to, being a girl and all. It almost sounded like it was comfortably near your speaking pitch.

Awesome good job! Mind if I ask what effects you used on your voice? I tinker around every now and then with recording but I can never seem to get the recording to sound right. Then I give up for a while.

Oh, I definitely want in on this.  How do I record and upload?

My recording software of choice is Audacity (https://audacity.sourceforge.net/). It's fantastic and it's free. Record your voice in there. There's a bigass record button in the upper left area of the interface. Hit stop when you're done. When you're happy with your recording, export it!

My preferred place to upload is picosong (https://www.picosong.com). They only accept MP3s, however, so you should export an MP3 from Audacity. It'll probably ask you for the LAME DLL so you can export MP3s. Here's a guide on how to get that loaded up. (https://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq_i18n?s=install&i=lame-mp3) After you've exported, upload the file to picosong and give us the link!

I choose....

"Even though I'll be gone, I will live on, live on", from A Change of Seasons (approx. 21:58 - 22:15)

I don't mind how you do it. Play it seriously or for comedy, your choice! If you can't hold that note, that's fine too! Just put your own twist on it! :)

Yeah! Whoo! I'd like to thank my sponsors; Corsair for manufacturing my headphones, Spotify for playing the section of the song, and DTF for giving me this opportunity. I'd also like to thank my crew for doing a great job on pit road, and my crew chief James LaBrie for making that final call that won the race.

Anyways, I will forever cherish this achievement. This is going on all my future job applications.

The next line is: "I have done what you asked of me. Leaves me nothing to live for" from Far From Heaven. (1:35 - 1:54) The person with the most exaggerated vibrato wins.

I know this is breaking the rules a little here, but, as I don't have a voice at the moment (I damaged my vocal chords through food poisoning like a certain Mr. LaBrie I could mention, but I have to ask somebody to do "Watch the sparrow falling
Gives new meaning to it all
If not today nor yet tomorrow then some other day

I'll take seven lives for one
And then my only father's son
As sure as I did ever love him I am not afraid " like James can on I&W! That is IMPOSSIBLE for me to pull off with my band when we do pull me under!!

^^^ Well if you go an octave lower than James sings that part it might be possible. In all fairness, even James struggles with that part. :P But sometimes he completely nails it and it's quite impressive.

Okay sure, next line-

"Watch the sparrow falling
Gives new meaning to it all
If not today nor yet tomorrow then some other day

I'll take seven lives for one
And then my only father's son

I'll choose either the most impressive success or the most hilarious fail of an attempt.  :)

I would love to try this, just not right now.  For some reason, I can only sing well when I'm listening to the song with the vocals.  I can match pretty much any pitch that's not too high if I'm singing along with it, even if the songs' volume is low.  It's like the vocalist is sort of like training wheels for me.  But me trying to sing with no song playing ends in disaster.  What are the best ways to practice your singing without paying for a coach?  I can usually match Labrie very well (except for when he goes really high), and I can sing along with both Linkin Park and Avenged Sevenfold extremely well (minus the screaming).  I was singing along with "Planets" earlier and I was only off pitch one time and it was slightly.  But like I said, take the song away and I'm a mess.  I want to be able to sing well without the song playing?  Any tips?

Oh my gosh man, I cannot explain how much you nailed my exact thoughts.

Using your example (Avenged Sevenfold) I too sing along with M. Shadows vocals. When singing with him, I have so much confidence, and can nail even the high parts perfectly on pitch.

Then, I took the songs to my guitar. Let's say, the song Dear God. His chorus vocals are SO DAMN HIGH! Not only are they high, but they are like belted out, and consistent. It isn't just a few high notes here and there. The whole thing is like that. I tried, and failed miserably. Despite nailing it perfectly when singing along to the record.

So I had to sing the chorus an octave lower, and it just doesn't work. That particular chorus being an octave higher is one of the things that makes it stand apart from the verses.

Is it ALL just a confidence issue? Does singing along with the record really heighten our vocal esteem that much? Or is the singer on the album masking our mistakes, and making us sound better?

I've always wanted to know this too, so any help would be appreciated.

Admittedly, it wasn't dead on. There was a time when I was with some people and I sung the intro to Metropolis and they started laughing, I was like, "What?" And they're both like, "Charlie Dominici!" But that was a fluke, haha.

Title: Re: The Singing Game
Post by: TheGreatPretender on December 06, 2014, 10:30:03 AM
Well, I have everything from Images and Words to SFAM, plus Octavarium and it's all album quality although mixes might be a little off, but I might even say some of them are better than the originals, in terms of the master, with more dynamic range and stuff.

Train of Thought Instrumental Demos sound like, well, demos.

I also collected a few instrumental covers of songs here and there, such as Disappear, A Fortune in Lies, Aftermath, Forsaken, Misunderstood, and they're... Singable I guess, but not great.
Then I have an instrumental cover of The Enemy Inside which is like, absolutely spot on from the album, in terms of mix and tone, I honestly can't tell the difference, aside from lack of vocals. At least I think it was a cover. I can't imagine where I'd get an official instrumental of the song from.

Wow that is awesome to hear that you've got SFaM and Octavarium instrumentals. Never knew about those.

And that's crazy that someone made a cover of TEI instrumental that is so accurate. They must really know what they're doing mix-wise, as it is incredibly hard to mimic a mix - especially a mix of a band like DT.

Yeah, I know. It really felt like for a while they went on kind of a binge with DT, just releasing new songs what seemed like every week for a while, then they just stopped... I wonder if maybe they're saving SDOIT or TOT for when DT starts working on the new album, that way they can release them when there's a bit more DT hype.
Well, "wonder" is not the right word, I HOPE that's what they're doing.

Keep in mind though that it's all pretty tightly encoded and the only way to actually get the tracks in MP3 form, you have to convert them from raw sound file format. But if you have Audacity, then it's a breeze.

Great!! You sound especially good on the high notes ("survive" and "alive"), and your tone sounds very pleasing with the instrumental.

_____________________________________________________________________________________

I assume these will be the only 2 submissions, so I will judge the winner based on these two.

After listening to both a few times, both of these were really great and my decision is RAZOR thin between both. It was extremely hard to choose, but here is a little breakdown:

Ad134's submission was perfectly on pitch, with none of the notes being sharp or flat. Great conviction in his voice. He also gets some points for originality, with the little note run at the very end.

TheGreatPretender had a few pitch problems (ex: on "kept her" toward the end), BUT his tone sounded wonderful with the instrumental and the more drawn-out notes ("way to survive" and "alive") sounded buttery smooth.

In the end, I went with...

....

...

TheGreatPretender. Congrats!

Despite any pitch or timing issues, I just found his submission SLIGHTLY more pleasing to listen to. This is not taking anything away from Ad134, who absolutely nailed every note and has an awesome sounding voice. I'm sure that if 100 people judged this, it would be split 50/50 in the end based on personal preferences.

Congrats again to TGP, and I'm looking forward to your choice for the next line!

I took 9 takes and said fuck it, this is the final one. :P I think I did good aside from the last note becoming slightly off pitch and the trail off. ;_; At least it was just for fun.

Seeing as this is still up, finally bothered to submit one. I lowered the key by like half an octave, but trust me, you wouldn't wanna hear me try this at the regular pitch.  :D

Great passage btw! Was fun to attempt.  :xbones

I'll just observe this one.  Had to go through this with "Musicianship" class in college (sight reading / singing).  It wasn't that I couldn't hit the notes, but knowing my range is limited and I sing with ridiculously bad technique would get my nerves up enough that my mile wide vibrato hit all the notes.  So you can't say I didn't hit the notes.  I hit 'em all each and every note.

Whew... I'm glad things progressed at reduced speed here and I didn't miss too many cool lines. I was out of order all March due to pneumonia. I'm back at work and feel like I'm at maybe 90% to 95% again, but there's still a lot of coughing and I don't want to start singing too soon after a six weeks break, though I catch myself more and more starting to sing lines and having to force myself to stop.

Speaking of vocal cord torture...

https://vocaroo.com/i/s00XELpn0PrU

The low bitrate of vocaroo obscures some of the multitracks, but I tried to do as many as possible, including a talky track, whisper track, shouty track, and shrieky track.

That's a C6, by the way. Hope you enjoy!

Cool pefrormances all around, guys! The usual suspects turning in great stuff as expected, and everyone who's submitting for the first time, cool stuff, hope to hear more!

Nefarius, really, really awesome job. Damn you and your musical prowess!

But just to make things more fun, the winner is Metropolaris. Bassist or not, I really liked your performance, as well as your flub, haha. Is this your first submission? Go ahead and pick the next one!

And yes, that was my first submission

As for the next line, how about the chorus to Solitary Shell?

"He's a Monday morning lunatic
Disturbed from time to time
Lost within himself

A temporary catatonic
Madman on occasion
When will he break out
Of his solitary shell"

I think you and Ad134 have pretty similar timbre, I usually can't tell who is who :D
And I thought that line from Ravenskill will be easier to sing but it is really weird, I'm not big fan of it (and I love many vocal melodies on TA).

Very nice line selection! More difficult than it appears to be at first but lots of fun. I'm just not used to that breathy style at all.
I hope I got the spooky factor right though.

Thanks heaps for that Nef!

Next up is a section from A Change Of Seasons:

I'm sick of all
You hypocrites
Holding me at bay
And I don't need
your sympathy
to get me through the day

Seasons change
And so can I
Hold on boy
No time to cry
Untie these strings
I'm climbing down
I won't let them push me away

Bonus points go to anyone who can sing it in the original octave and key in full voice, but this is not a requirement by any means.

Happy singing! :metal

Then, I tried in a more comfortable range and that didn't work out.
So I combined both to make this monstrosity. Enjoy! :neverusethis:

Alright time for me to choose I think!

First off, honorable mentions go to CDrice for a super amusing entry. You nearly won from entertainment value alone :metal
And also to Zyzzyva17 for basically nailing the final note

As for the winner, it was incredibly close between Ad134 and TheGreatPretender

TheGreatPretender - you remind me of Charlie Dominici, but better. Really enjoyed your submission

Victory goes to Ad134 however, for delivery. Cogratulations! can't wait for the next line!

Pitch-wise, it was a toss-up between IdoSC and shredd... You both had pretty much dead-on pitch, which is really really difficult to do in that range. Props to the both of you
Power-wise, it was between TheGreatPretender and shredd... It sounded like you both put everything you had into every note!

The overlap between those two is shredd, who I declare the winner! Go ahead and pick the next line :)

I'm thinking about making a thread of people making their own versions of the "Day after Day" in ANTR using the instrumental track as soon as I have mine ready, lol, or someone can make it before, whathever.

Making it as exaggerated, stupid, or "better" as much as possible, you can use effects.

OK. What is this game? I want to play.

Hello, and welcome..

Awesome.

I will participate, but my harsh vox leave much to be desired, plus I'm battling allergies. I'm going to wait until a melodic segment comes along :)

We had some fantastic entries this time round! It was a close one, but I think I'm gonna give it to shredd, because I thought that the high note was both awesome and completely jarring in a hilarious way.
Title: Re: The Singing Game
Post by: shredd on April 19, 2016, 08:30:42 PM
Thanks for the win! glad you liked the high note hahaha!
Next line is:

I was told, there's a miracle
For each day that I try
I was told, there's a new love that's born
For each one that has died
I was told, there'll be no-one to call on
When I feel alone and afraid
I was told
If you dream of the next world
You'll find yourself
Swimming in a lake of fire

This time I'm looking for timing accuracy and phrasing

Happy singing and Rock On! :metal

Okay, another Astonishing selection:

I knew the day had come
And you could be tempted
To give up the chosen one
And finally end this
Do anything for your son
A terminal weakness
Now you're as good as done

I didn't have a choice
And I was defenseless
I didn't believe his voice
The fighting was senseless
But now I can see the truth
I've got to my senses
I shouldn't have trusted you

In case you don't recognize this, it's the "rap" section from The Path That Divides. I'm looking particularly for correct rhythm and diction.

Decided on Honor Thy Father. Feel free to sound as harsh/angry as you like. You don't have to go for the higher notes, although I know some of you will. And by some of you I mean Ad134.

On and on and on and on it goes
And with every passing day true colors show

How can you ever sleep a wink at night
Pretending that everything is alright
And have the balls to blame this mess on me

Never in my life have I seen someone
Oblivious to the damage he has done
You're the rotted root in the family tree

Watch where you walk
Don't you dare cross the crooked step
Watch the way you talk
Don't cross the crooked step

Doesn't look like there'll be any more entries for this one. Let's see...

CDrice, your entry was very entertaining, loved it. That death growl though.

Ad134, I'd say yours was the most professional-sounding. Really liked the multiple vocal tracks. Especially the ending.

Zyzzyva17, I loved how consistent you were with the throat-murdering harshness throughout almost the entire thing. And you made "don't cross the crooked step" sound like a death threat, lol.

Tomislav95, I didn't know Gollum could sing. :P

IdoSC, you started out pretty soft and almost timid, then you turned into Batman. Brilliant.

I think I'll go with Ad134's. Very difficult decision, all of the entries were awesome, but I really liked the sound of his.

I mean, I probably should have done that, but we've already gone to the concert now anyway (and it was awesome, by the way). I'll have to keep nagging him to come back here soon under threat of picking someone else.

Okay, let's try this one... I hope we haven't done it before, but I ain't going through 12 pages to find out :D

Heaven must be more than this
When angels waken with a kiss
Sacred hearts won't take the pain
But mine will never be the same

He stands before the window
His shadow slowly fading from the wall
And from an ivory tower hears her call
"Let the light surround you"

Took you long enough. It's been, what, 6 months? :P

I'll probably do my entry tomorrow, when people aren't asleep.

Guys, if you don't want this to win by default, you better send in some entries.

By the way, you win by default even if there are other entries.

But here's mine anyway. When one bad take is not enough

That made me laugh so hard.  :rollin

I appear to have strained my voice from constantly singing along to things and never giving my voice a rest. Welp. I'll see how it is in the next few days. I want to enter this one :D

Surprised this thread hasn’t been revived sooner under the lockdown, but here it goes.  Has this section from Lines in the Sand been done before?  Disclaimer:  I am not a singer (obviously) and I do not have professional recording equipment (just a rudimentary computer setup), but this is a fun lyric for some shameless karaoke.

Lyrics:
We fabricate our demons
Invite them into our homes
Have supper with the aliens
And fight the war alone
We conjure up our skeletons
Enlist the den of thieves
Frightened from our closets
Then sewn upon our sleeves
In the stream of consciousness
There is a river crying
Living comes much easier
Once we admit
We're dying

I used an instrumental version of the song from YouTube.  Feel free to link your own personal rendition or poke fun at mine.  Based on some of the prior samples in this thread, I’m sure there are a few DTFers that could really nail this one.   :metal
