Title: Buddyhunter1's Roulette of Fun and Tears (But Mostly Fun) - The End!
Post by: Buddyhunter1 on October 23, 2013, 03:51:21 PM
Hello everyone, welcome to my first song roulette! In the words of James Labrie, I'm extremely excited.

-Elite
-Lucien
-Lolzeez
-Nekov
-jingle.boy

Unless someone drops out, spots are closed.

---RULES---

- There will be eight rounds, each lasting a week, or until everyone submits something.
- Please try to keep the songs thirteen minutes or shorter; it makes listening to them and grading them much easier.
- Songs will be graded from a scale of 1 to 10, with half points (i.e. 8.5/10)
- You should try to follow the theme for each round, but songs are graded based on how much I like them, not how well they follow the theme. That said, if the song doesn't fit the theme at all, it'll probably lose some points.
- No more than two songs from the same band can be used in the roulette. See the "newly banned" section at the bottom to check which bands have already been used up.
- In terms of submissions, PMing me a YouTube link is preferred, or anything that doesn't force me to sign up to hear it. If the song doesn't seem to be available anywhere online, just send me the name of the song and I'll find some way to listen to it.

I'm ready. And that's probably the shortest 'banned list' I've ever seen in a roulette. This should be a breeze. Get ready to die, bitches! :D

I'm not really anticipating mine because I'm either gonna have to make a really gigantic banned list or just put bands I absolutely adore on it. :lol

Post by: Buddyhunter1 on October 24, 2013, 09:57:22 AM
Alright, everyone's ready, so let's do this!

ROUND 1: THE OPENER

The first song on an album or the first song in a setlist is very important; it should be bombastic, energetic, and should let everyone know that they're in for one hell of a ride. So, for this round, you must send me a good "opener" song. While it's hard to come up with a concrete definition for what that means, you can usually feel it when you've got a song that's a kickass opener.

Keep in mind, the song you send me does NOT have to be the first song on its respective album, as long as it wouldn't feel out-of-place as an opener. (i.e Metropolis Part 1)

This round will last until next Thursday or whenever everyone has sent in a submission. Let's get this show started!

I would limit it depending on the score. Like for example, if a band gets a 7 or above it can't be used no more.

I liked the way Lolzeez ran his, where if it made a strong positive impact on him the band became banned. But if it didn't make a strong impact, someone else could take the risk of trying again with a different song...

I wouldn't do it anyways though, so I have no objections either way

The way I look at it, one song isn't always representative of a band as a whole. I don't really feel the need to shut everyone off from submitting a song from a band the second someone else does, even if the first one left a good impression.

That said, I definitely see the issue with lots of people sending songs from the same band because it worked well for people in the past, and three or more songs from one band is a bit much.

So I think I'm going to stick with the 2 songs or less rule.

ROUND 1 RESULTS

Elite: Haken - Atlas Stone

Oh hey, it's Haken. These guys have been on my "should check out sometime" list for ages, and I was certain I would get something from them in this roulette. Turns out I didn't have to wait long. :lol Anyways, this definitely feels like a true opener, in fact out of all the submissions for this round, this song probably fits the theme the most. Like all good openers, the intro is fantastic. That piano melody is absolutely beautiful, and the moment the full band kicks in is great. I also like when the melody is reprised later on in the song with that guitar solo on top of it. That ethereal, soaring atmosphere is what I like most about this song... which is why I think the song would have been a bit better if it stuck to that vibe a bit more. The jazzy break after the first chorus in particular has no reason to be there, and overall I actually think the song would have been stronger if it was a bit shorter in length. As it is though, it's still a good song, and a great choice for the first round.

Score: 8.0

Lolzeez: Leprous - Bilateral

This song definitely had a strong impact the first time I heard it; it's very unique-sounding. I love the electronic elements in the verses; they have a very cool atmosphere that is right up my alley. They also contrast well with that powerful chorus. Upon repeated listenings however, I get the feeling that this song could get old relatively quickly. While I just praised that chorus, its power diminishes a bit after you've heard it a lot. I still definitely like what I heard though, it just left me wanting a bit more. Feel free to send me another song by them later down the line, I get the feeling that this song only scratches the surface of this band's potential.

Score: 8.0

Nekov: Pagan's Mind - God's Equation

You know your submission is good when there's titties on the cover art and a heated religious debate in the comments section.
This one was definitely a grower; nothing really stuck out the first time I heard it, but now I'd say it's one of the best songs I got this round. First of all, that vocalist is fucking killing it. His melodies are great and he's got a lot of power. The chorus is fantastic, I love the melody and the climactic feel that backs it up. Throw in some cool riffs and a good flow that doesn't make the song feel overly-long despite a pretty simple structure, and you've got yourself a great submission.

Score: 8.5

senecadawg2: Circus Maximus - Architect Of Fortune

I've been aware of this band's existence for a long time, and this song definitely made a great first impression of them. I really like the guitar work; there's some really cool riffs in the first half, the guitarist's tone is fantastic, and the the lead lines thrown in every now and then always feel tasteful. The balance of dynamics is really well-done, there's a good amount of heavy sections as well as quieter sections. Speaking of which, while the first half of the song is already good, the second half really elevates the piece to another level. That break is quite beautiful, and the way it explodes into the instrumental section leading up to the final chorus is amazing. Congratulations, this is probably the best song I got this round. Keep it up! :tup

Score: 9.0

elefantStone: Disillusion - And The Mirror Cracked

Now these guys I've never even heard of. I'll be honest, the first time I heard this song I wasn't too impressed with the first three minutes, but then that break into the middle section came. I really love that whole part of the song, which is unsurprising considering I love atmospheric elements in music. The acoustic guitars, the piano, and that chord progression really create a great, melancholy mood. It feels genuinely emotional and beautiful. The heavier parts of the song definitely aren't as good, but they've grown on me a bit. So overall, I'd say this is a pretty great song.

Score: 8.5

Lucien: Haken - Falling Back To Earth

Oh hey, it's Haken. Again. Same album, even. :lol I should really pick this album up sometime soon, it sounds pretty great. Anyways, compared to Atlas Stone, I definitely like this one more. It covers a lot of ground and flows really well, the vocalist gives a better performance, and there's no parts in particular I would cut out. The first half has a lot of cool riffs, some nice atmospheric touches, and a good amount of proggy goodness. However, the second half is where the song really picks up. (That seems to be a recurring theme this round...) The quiet break is nice, and the buildup from soft and atmospheric to loud and bombastic (dat massive riff) is done really well. Aside from Architect Of Fortune, this is probably the best song I got this round.
HOWEVER... this song really doesn't fit the theme of this round at all. I'm sorry, I just don't get the "opener" vibe at all from it. This becomes even more apparent when it's compared with Atlas Stone, the most opener-y song I received. If you saved this song for a later round, it probably would have gotten a 9. For this round, I'm sadly gonna have to take off .5 points.
But it's still an awesome song. :tup

Score: 8.5

LieLowTheWantedMan: The Drones - I See Seaweed

Well, this one was certainly interesting. I don't think I can really compare this song to anything I've heard before. It's very experimental and theatrical, and both of those things are good in my book. While I have no idea what the song's actually about, it feels very emotional. While the vocalist's voice sounds a bit silly, (he reminds me a lot of Roger Waters, which isn't really a good thing) I can tell he's singing his heart out, and it definitely shows in his performance. The loud parts of the song sound fantastic, and the contrast between them and the verses works very well. That said, I really wish they lasted longer. They just seem to leave way too quickly; the only loud section that lasts as long as I think it should is the bombastic finale with the guitar solo, easily the best part of the song. I also wish that the quiet sections had a bit more driving them than just the vocals. But hey, minor complaints. This is a really hard song to give a rating to, hopefully an 8 is good enough. Better than the other times you submitted it, at least? :lol

Score: 8.0

Scorpion: Wintersun - Winter Madness

JESUS CHRIST GUYS SLOW THE FUCK DOWN
Anyways, this song certainly is energetic, you didn't lie about that. :lol Some of the riffs and melodies are also pretty enjoyable. But I think that the song is a bit TOO energetic and fast. The constant blastbeats and the superfast tempo obscure some of the previously-mentioned melodies, and my favorite parts of the song are when the band chills out a bit and doesn't sound like they've all had fifty cups of coffee before recording. It's definitely not a bad song, but I don't really see myself ever revisiting it unless I'm in the mood for something ridiculously energetic.

Score: 7.5

jingle.boy: Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love

Yes, I am a child of the 90s. I've heard a lot of "classic" bands, but ehh, aside from Pink Floyd they usually just aren't really my thing. Same thing goes for this song. While that riff IS pretty cool, this song didn't really do anything for me. I don't know if I could point out anything about this song that's actually bad, (except for maybe that middle section, what the hell was the point of that? :lol) but compared to everything else I got this round, this song just doesn't resonate with my tastes. But hey, kudos for trying.

Score: 7.0

?: Dark Tranquillity - Nothing To No One

This song was pretty cool. The intro is really great, starting the song off on a good note. The slow groove the song has is really nice; the riffs work really well with it. With that being said, a lot of the song doesn't use that groove, instead having the drums in double time or doing blastbeats. This pretty much only happens in the verses, which are probably the weak point of the song. I think if the whole song was in that slow groove, I would have liked it a bit better. But as-is, the song is still pretty good.

Score: 8.0

THE SCORE SO FAR

-senecadawg2: 9.0
-Nekov: 8.5
-elefantStone: 8.5
-Lucien: 8.5
-Elite: 8.0
-Lolzeez: 8.0
-LieLowTheWantedMan: 8.0
-?: 8.0
-Scorpion: 7.5
-jingle.boy: 7.0

ROUND 2: HEAVY SHIT (BUT NOT TOO HEAVY)

This round is pretty self-explanatory. I like metal and heavy shit. So send me some.
That said, there's certain styles of "heavy" I like and others I don't like. I'm not going to go into detail here, so take a look at my banned artists list and try to figure it out for yourself. And hey, feel free to take some risks! Good luck.

Keep in mind, I added a new rule: No more than two songs per band for the roulette. If I get two songs from a band, they get added to the "newly-banned" list on the first post. The only band on there so far is Haken.

Scorpion: Wintersun - Winter Madness

Anyways, this song certainly is energetic, you didn't lie about that. :lol Some of the riffs and melodies are also pretty enjoyable. But I think that the song is a bit TOO energetic and fast. The constant blastbeats and the superfast tempo obscure some of the previously-mentioned melodies, and my favorite parts of the song are when the band chills out a bit and doesn't sound like they've all had fifty cups of coffee before recording. It's definitely not a bad song, but I don't really see myself ever revisiting it unless I'm in the mood for something ridiculously energetic.

I came away with much the same thoughts in my roulette.  Exact quote was "The song is pretty busy for my tastes."  :lol

My favorite part was also the calmer section.  "The more relaxed section from 2:47 to about 3:05 was brilliant."

No.  IMO, anything longer than a week is too long (assuming you have all your songs); anything shorter than 2 days is too short (take more than a few listens to be able to deliver a meaningful judgment).

The 'dawg is just eager to see how many fewer points he's gonna get this round.

Around five days per round seems pretty reasonable to me, especially since ten songs can be a lot to absorb.
Plus I'm in college now, so there's also that. :lol

ROUND 2 RESULTS

jingle.boy: Flaming Row - Rage Of Despair

This song definitely reminded me of Ayreon with its multiple vocalists (both male and female) and rock-opera lyrics. While I'm not much of an Ayreon fan, this song was pretty cool. It's very good musically, with some great riffs and melodies. My favorite parts were probably the heaviest sections; those riffs mixed with the harsh vocalist were right up my alley. The Dream Theater-esque solo section towards the end was also pretty nice. I don't really know what I think about the female vocals; while there's nothing wrong with them per se, they kinda detract from the overall heaviness and add a bit of that dramatic, rock opera vibe that I'm not a huge fan of. Lyrically, it's a lot less cheesier than something like Ayreon, but since it's a part of a concept album it's a bit hard to judge on its own. Overall this was a pretty good song, but nothing mind-blowing.

Score: 8.0

elefantStone: Nevermore - My Acid Words

This song was interesting in that it's a pretty standard melodic death metal song, but with no harsh vocals. That's something you don't see much of these days. The music is definitely heavy enough; there's plenty of good riffs and head-bangable rhythms. Also, that section before the guitar solo is fucking brutal as hell. :metal Going back to the vocals, while the clean vocals add some nice melodies, especially in the choruses and the calm section before the previously mentioned brutal part, I think some harsh vocals would have been welcome. The verses are practically begging for them, and they would have made the clean melodies stick out more. Regardless, this song was still pretty badass.

Score: 8.0

senecadawg2: Gallowbraid - Stone Of Remembrance

Ah, the winner of the first round returns! Was this song as good as Architect Of Fortune? Sort answer.......... yes. Not only is this song fantastic, I decided to check out the rest of the EP, and now I'm a fan of a band that has only released a single EP. That's the first time that's ever happened. Obviously, this band sounds a ton like Agalloch, but that's not a bad thing at all. They share a lot of the same qualities; the tasteful black metal elements, the haunting atmosphere, the beautiful acoustic guitars and folk influences... It's all there. If there's one complaint I can come up with for this song it's that it kinda made me realize how similar-sounding most of the bands of this genre sound. :lol As for this song in particular, there's not a bad section, and it just gets better and better as the song goes on. The section after the acoustic break, that kickass guitar solo, the final chorus and that amazing outro... This is just a fantastic track. You're on a roll man, but don't get too cocky. There's still plenty of rounds left for you to potentially screw up. ;)

Score: 9.0

Lucien: Zero Hour - The Falcon's Cry

...And on the other end of the spectrum, there's this song. *Sigh...* I hoped that it would grow on me a bit, but the whole composition of this song just... baffles me. The best way for me to talk about it is just to go through the song section-by-section. The first two and a half minutes just sound awkward. To me, it just sounds like a bunch of wankery with no real drive, feel, or even energy. There's proggy and experimental, and then there's just sounding like a complete mess. Also, the vocalist continuously screaming SOMETHING'S GONNA DIIIIIIIIIIIIIE in an annoying wail that doesn't fit the music at all doesn't help much. Then, the song suddenly breaks into a calm section with no real transition whatsoever. At first I thought that it was just a brief, calm chorus, but no. This section goes on for nearly FOUR FREAKING MINUTES with little to no variety at all. I swear that guitarist is just playing the same chord over and over and over again. This section isn't exactly bad, it's just boring as hell. At the six-minute mark, the song finally breaks into what I assume is supposed to be the climax. I say assume, because it's completely weak and underwhelming. Some keyboards or extra melodies would have given it a sense of a climactic feel, but as it is it sounds thin and powerless. And then it goes back to the calm section. And then the song thankfully ends. There's some fragments of a good song in here, but the composition is incredibly sloppy and the execution is awful. Better luck next round, dude.

Score: 6.0

?: Paradise Lost - The Enemy

This is a nice little metal song. It's got a nice tempo and some catchy vocals, and the guitar work is simplistic but quite effective. I especially like the chuggy riffs found in the prechoruses and the section before the guitar solo. There's nothing amazing about this song, but I like it. Simple write-up for a simple song. :lol

Score: 8.0

Nekov: Russian Circles - Geneva

Now this one was really interesting. I really love the mood of this song; the way the instruments blend together to create those unsettling, atmospheric textures is really great. The instrumentation is really cool; the guitars, the bass, and the drums are all doing something interesting and creative. Experimental stuff like this is right up my alley. I'm not sure I would like a whole album full of this stuff (all-instrumental bands aren't really my thing), but this song was great. Keep it up!

Score: 8.5

LieLowTheWantedMan: Melvins - Honey Bucket

Yay, sludge metal! I really like the guitar in this song, it's got that low, gutteral, sludgy tone that I definitely dig. In particular, the main riff in the latter part of the song is really tasty. I definitely get a lot of Mastodon vibes from this song, which is good, because Mastodon is awesome. The vocalist is pretty good too, even though he's barely in the song. (If I didn't bother looking up the band members I would have sworn he was James Hetfield) Anyways, what's the big problem with this song? IT'S TOO DAMN SHORT. This could have been a great song if it branched out a bit more, but it just ends before it gets the chance to. Speaking of which, the ending just comes out of nowhere. Good short songs still have a clear beginning, middle, and end. This song has a beginning and middle, but no real end. There's no climax or signs that the song is over, it just... stops. That was pretty disappointing. This song was short, but it was still pretty sweet.

Score: 7.5

Elite: maudlin of the Well - They Aren't All Beautiful

This song is exactly what I was hoping for from this round: heavy as hell, but in an interesting and memorable way. This is an awesome song with a fantastic mix of brutal and bizarre. The first part of the song is pretty standard death metal, but things just get better and more interesting as the song goes on. That slow part in the middle is great, and then that crazy instrumental section shows up... The first time I heard that, I was sold. :lol It still manages to be heavy, but it's so wacky at the same time. Brilliant stuff. You guys need to send me more shit like this.

Score: 9.0

Lolzeez: Dir En Grey - Vinushka

This song is still sinking in, but I'm confident in saying it's one of the best submissions I got this round. It's got a great range of dynamics; there's plenty of beautiful quiet sections, and a lot of heavy stuff as well. What really makes this song great is its flow. It's a very slow buildup, gradually getting heavier and more intense until it explodes. Then it goes back to quiet and does it again. I really love songs that do that. The really heavy parts have so much buildup to them that when they do come, they're intense and satisfying as hell. [insert orgasm joke here] I can imagine seeing these guys live and everyone losing their shit once those sections come in. Great song, and I've heard lots of good things about this album. I should check it out sometime.

Score: 8.5

Scorpion: Protest The Hero - Sequoia Throne

I've definitely heard of these guys before. My few complains about this song are likely just traits of this style of music. There's not much song structure to speak of, and the transitions are usually pretty abrupt. There's also a fair share of guitar wankery, but that doesn't really bother me. That said, I do like this song. It's just got a great sense of energy and drive, and some of the sections are really enjoyable, even though they're usually over pretty quickly. I've got no problem with the vocalist, in fact I actually like him. He's got a lot of different styles and he fits the style of music well. That music video is also pretty fun to watch, even though that has nothing to do with the song itself. Pretty cool submission.

Score: 8.0

ROUND 3: ATMOSPHERICS & AMBIANCE

Based on the results so far, you guys should have noticed that I love atmospheric music. Songs that convey a very vivid mood and image. Some atmospheric songs are light, serene, and peaceful, while others are dark and evil. Regardless of what mood it conveys, you must send me something atmospheric and/or ambient (but not ENTIRELY ambient; it's gotta have some melody to it) Good luck!

Make sure senecadawg2 doesn't win again.

Or just find a song that puts a lot of images in your head, aka an atmospheric song. Singular artists of the genre are generally pretty obscure, so you have to dig a bit. Think the ambient section in IT, but more melodic.

ROUND 3 RESULTS

Lucien: Paul Winter - Canyon Chaconne

If I were judging these songs solely on how atmospheric they are, this one would rank pretty high. It's incredibly peaceful and serene; the soft synths in the background and the quiet nature ambiance really add a lot. The sax is obviously the main instrument here, and it's done quite well. The player keeps it nice and simple, which works best. Overall, this is a very nice song, but it's a bit too minimalistic for my tastes.

Score: 8.0

jingle.boy: Genesis - Watcher Of The Skies

You said this round wasn't going to end well for you, and well, that's not ENTIRELY true. Things didn't exactly get off to a good start when you sent me Welcome To The Machine by Pink Floyd, a band already on my banned artists list.  :lol While this song isn't anywhere near as atmospheric as Welcome To The Machine (or as good for that matter) it's not bad. I really like the mellotron intro and outro, but the rest of the song kinda just sounds like most other 70s prog rock, which I just haven't really been able to get into. The song also isn't that atmospheric, but I'm not going to take off points for stuff like that this round. Too bad that Pink Floyd song was disqualified; if this were my first time hearing it you probably would have won this round. :lol

Score: 7.5

elefantStone: Ulver - The Future Sound Of Music

I've heard lots of good things about this band and this album specifically, and this song definitely left a great impression. Some advice for future submissions: I love electronic music if it's done well. This song is a great example of that; it's very experimental, and the electronic sounds and effects create a great mood. The second half of this song where things get really loud is fantastic, and the first half is pretty great too. If this is the future sound of music, I'm certainly not complaining.

Score: 8.5

?: Kevin Moore - Shine

This song's kinda pushing it since I'm quite familiar with a lot of Kevin Moore's work, but what the hell, I probably would have never heard this song if you didn't send me it. This song has a very vivid and beautiful "watery" atmosphere. Kevin Moore is fantastic at picking just the right effects and sounds to convey a specific atmosphere, and he's also great at writing beautiful piano melodies, as this song shows. The female vocalist is a nice surprise; she fits the sound of the music very well and adds an extra layer of serenity to the piece. This is easily your best submission so far, so keep it up!

Score: 8.5

senecadawg2: Ulver - Eos

Seems like Ulver is the go-to atmospheric band around these parts. I should really check out one of their full albums sometime soon. Anyways, out of the two songs by this band I got this round, it's hard to say which one I like more, since they're so different from each other. However, this one is easily more atmospheric and beautiful. That's the best way to describe this song; simply put, the atmosphere is absolutely beautiful. The synths, strings, and that high-pitched instrument (whatever the hell it is) are all used to a great effect, and the soft vocals add a nice touch. This is probably the most atmospheric song I got this round. Anyways dude, you need to stop scoring so high. Seriously, it's not fair for everyone else. :P

Score: 8.5

LieLowTheWantedMan: Bohren & Der Club Of Gore - Midnight Black Earth

Seems like you were either expecting me to either love or hate this song, but it's more like somewhere in-between. I was a bit skeptical at first when you described it as jazz, but this is definitely unlike most other jazz I've ever heard before. I'm definitely a fan of that haunting, dark, "middle of the night" atmosphere, and this song pulls that mood off very well. The instruments all work very well, especially that quiet, moody organ. This song falls into the same category as Lucien's submission in that I like it, but it's just a bit too minimalistic. With great atmospheric music, I can listen to it and enjoy it regardless of what mood I'm in. For this song, I have to be in the right mood to really enjoy it, especially due to the fact that it's very long and repetitive. It seems more like something I'd put on in the background instead of devoting my full attention to it. That said, it's incredibly atmospheric and I definitely appreciate the style they were going for.

Score: 8.0

Elite: Wolves In The Throne Room - Dia Artio

This one was pretty good. It definitely has an interesting mix of noisy and peaceful; it always sounds like there's a lot going on, but the song remains pretty simplistic at the same time. There's a lot of subtle melodies hidden in the background, and they definitely add a lot when they're noticeable. While the song picks up a bit in the second half and changes up slightly, it's still pretty repetitive. It starts to sound a bit drone-y after a while, though that may be due to the muddy production. It's a pretty good song, but not the best one I got this round.

Score: 8.0

Nekov: Ayreon - Comatose

I think I've heard this song once or twice in the past when I was checking out songs from this album (I never ended up listening to the whole thing). That said, I wasn't familiar enough with it for it to be disqualified. As previously stated, I'm not a huge fan of what I've heard from Ayreon, but this song was pretty good. It's definitely got a cool electronic atmosphere and uses a lot of nice, spacey effects and instruments. The vocal melodies are also nice, especially in the chorus. I also really like the short instrumental section after the second chorus. There's nothing about this song I can really complain about, but it's nothing amazing either.

Score: 8.0

Lolzeez: Cult Of Luna - Finland

I knew I would get some form of post-rock this round. :lol This song has a nice mood to it; it ranges from peaceful, to melancholic, to angry. The whole song is essentially a ten-minute buildup, and while it is a good buildup, the song is a bit on the repetitive side. I think it would have been better if it was just a little bit shorter, and while the song gets pretty heavy towards the end, I feel like there's not much of a payoff to all that buildup. But hey, it's about the journey not the destination, right? This is a good song, but I think it could have been a bit better.

Score: 8.0

Scorpion: Ihsahn - On The Shores

It probably would have made more sense for you to use this song last round, but hey, who gives a shit. :lol This is yet another album I've heard a lot of good things about, and this was a pretty great song. The slow, heavy bits have a big, climactic feel to them, which makes sense since this is apparently the album closer. The calm sections add some nice contrast, and if it weren't for them, this song probably would have been disqualified from this round. :lol The three-minute long finale/sax solo is also pretty awesome. Speaking of sax, I knew beforehand that this album used it a lot, so I wasn't surprised to see it here. I'm not quite sure how I feel about it; I feel like it can get a bit wanky at times. But when it's just playing a simple melody like in the intro, it works really well. This definitely wasn't the most atmospheric song I got this round, but it was one of the best overall.

Score: 8.5

ROUND 4: RIFFS, RIFFS EVERYWHERE

I love awesome guitar riffs. They make for some of the greatest bits in music, period. For this round, you can send me any song, as long as it has a ton of kickass riffs. (Or a couple kickass riffs that repeat a lot, whatever) The more rhythm guitar the better! Bring on the chuggachug!

ROUND 4 RESULTS

Lolzeez: John Coltrane - Resolution

Nice. I start a round based around guitar riffs, and the first thing I get is a pure-jazz song with no guitar whatsoever.  :lol I should call you Trollzeez. Anyways, like I said before, this song is pure jazz. As such, I can't really judge it, since I never really listen to jazz. I've got nothing to really compare it to. Is it a bad song? No. Would I listen to something like this regularly? Probably not. It just doesn't appeal to me. The instrumentation is well-done, sure, but it's practically all solos, which gets boring pretty quickly for me. The only real riff in this song is the beginning sax line which shows up again at the end. I appreciate you trying to introduce me to something new, but there's really not much I can say about this song.

Score: 7.0

?: Fates Warning - Firefly

A song with Kevin Moore followed by a song with Jim Matheos? I see what you did there.  ;) I absolutely love Matheos's style of riffs in OSI, and he does a pretty good job here as well. His riffs are definitely the highlight of the song, so kudos for following the theme of the round well. There's also some catchy vocal melodies and the short instrumental section is pretty nice, but the song as a whole didn't grab me too much. It's still a fun, upbeat metal track though.

Score: 8.0

elefantStone: Buckethead - Final Wars

This one was a bit of a pleasant surprise. For the record, I usually hate instrumental, lead-guitar focused instrumental rock. It just puts me to sleep. But this song was pretty good, simply because the composition is really well-done. The amount of ground it covers and the range of styles it incorporates is pretty awesome. It's got great flow too; all the different sections flow together well and the whole thing ties together pretty nicely. The guitar work is very good, both in terms of the solos and the rhythm guitar. My main complaint with the song is that since it jumps around so much despite being a relatively short song, there's a lot of sections that I wish lasted a bit longer. Still, it's pretty good song.

Score: 8.0

Lucien: Rush - Jacob's Ladder

Rush is a band I've actually heard a lot of songs from. My best friend's a huge fan of them, and I even saw them live during the Time Machine tour. While I've heard the intro to this particular song a ton of times, (my friend was trying to learn how to play it on guitar) I've never actually sat down and listened to it in full, so here we are. While I've probably heard better Rush songs before, (Marathon) this song was still pretty awesome. It's very anthemic and grandiose, with that dramatic and ethereal atmosphere. The contrast between the bombastic parts and the calm, quiet breaks works very well. It also has a great flow, going from tense, to loud, to a break in the middle, followed by a buildup leading to the crescendo at the end. It's just a very nice song to listen to, and feels like a big journey contained in just seven minutes.

Score: 8.5

senecadawg2: Coheed And Cambria - Welcome Home

The acoustic guitar at the beginning sounds like the Tetris theme. 10/10.
Anyways, this song was quite awesome. It's got that grandiose, epic mood, without feeling too cheesy. (Only slightly.) It's also got some really damn catchy riffs, especially in the intro and outro. Speaking of which, the intro and outro of this song are fucking awesome. I can definitely see why they've been used in movie trailers and as sports entrance themes. They're just so kickass. The middle of the song isn't anywhere near as good, but it's not bad. If the whole song were as amazing as the first and last few minutes, this would be one hell of a song, but as it is, it's just relatively awesome. Which is still pretty great.

Score: 8.5

Nekov: Pantera - Domination

There's not much to say about this song other than the fact that the guitarist and the riffs kick serious amounts of ass. The riffs are great, and the guitarist plays them really damn well. I especially like how the intro riff gets modified a little bit multiple times throughout the intro; it's the little stuff like that that really add a lot. Also, dat outro. DAT OUTRO. :metal It would have been boring if it were just that chugchugchug-chugchugchug-chugchugchug riff over and over again, but they keep it interesting by adding that shred guitar over it, followed by that awesome riff that jumps between the left and right speakers. Extremely headbangable and really kickass. The rest of the song is good, but it's that outro that really elevates the song to great.

Score: 8.5

jingle.boy: Van Halen - Panama

Oh hey, it's 80s hard rock. I don't know if this really counts as "introducing" me to this band, since I've definitely heard of them before, was aware of what style of music they play, and I'm pretty certain I've heard this song on the radio once or twice before. Anyways, one more song for the "doesn't really appeal to me" pile. Yeah, the chorus is kinda catchy and the riffs aren't bad. But this style is pretty far-off from my general music tastes, and I can't say this song made me want to check out other stuff like it.

Score: 7.5

LieLowTheWantedMan: Psychotic Waltz - Out Of Mind

This one was… interesting. It's definitely got a strange atmosphere to it, which is cool; I definitely appreciate weird stuff. It's also got some cool riffs and rhythms. I especially like the slower section in the middle. The riffs in that part are really kickass and the slow tempo is perfect for headbanging. The verses and chorus are definitely the weak part of the song for me; they aren't bad, but there aren't really any positive things I can say about them. I appreciate all the obscure bands you're sending me, so far you haven't sent me a single one I've heard of before. :lol

Score: 8.0

Elite: Firewind - Into The Fire

This is a great example of speed metal done right. It's really fast-paced and energetic, but it's also very melodic and not too fast. The thrashy riffs are pretty damn awesome; the main riff, the one in the verses, and the one at the beginning of the instrumental section are all great. This energy of this song is definitely infectious; it's just incredibly fun to listen to. Throw in a cool intro, awesome solos, and some nice vocal melodies, and you've got a good submission.

Score: 8.5

Scorpion: Trivium - Shogun

I'll be honest, when I first saw these guys opening for Dream Theater in the first ADTOE tour, I thought they were pretty fucking terrible. But I went into this song with an open mind, and hey, it's a damn good song. Unlike pretty much everything I've heard from these guys before, this song is heavy, but also very melodic. There's barely any harsh vocals, any they're used effectively when they do show up. The flow of the song is also really great. The first half of the song is a great mix of cool riffs and nice melodies, the quiet break in the middle is very well done, and the fast, heavy section that comes after it is absolutely kickass. Are there more Trivium songs like this? When I saw them live, they just seemed like a boring, generic metalcore band, but this song… damn. I really, really like it. I can't come up with any complaints about it; it's pretty much everything I look for in a great progressive metal song. Well done, dude. :tup

ROUND 5: DEPRESSING SHIT (MAKE ME CRY MANLY TEARS)

I believe it was Steven Wilson who once said that sad music is the most beautiful. I agree. So send me something I'd play at my funeral if I were suddenly to die in a freak blender accident. The more depressing the better! Be atmospheric, but not too minimalistic. Have fun!

Glad you liked it! To be honest, it is Trivium's best song, the only ones that would come close for me are Caustic Are the Ties That Bind and Kirisute Gomen. Basically, the whole album Shogun is pretty awesome, but I'm not sure if it'll appeal to you that much, as the other songs are quite a bit more straight-forward.

Will send something shortly, I have two songs in mind.

I'm actually going to spoil the theme for Round 6 because I want your guys opinion on something...
It's going to be a co-op round, where you will team up with one other person and submit a song together, and each get the same amount of points.

Should I let you guys pick your partners or should I pair you up based on score? (i.e person in first place gets paired with person in last place, 2nd first with 2nd last, etc.) With the former it might be unfair if two of the highest-scoring people pair up, but with the latter it just might come down to the higher-scoring person picking the song all the time, so I don't know. Thoughts?

I'd like to be able to decide who to pair up with, because otherwise you might be forced to team up with someone whose tastes are totally different from yours, making it hard to pick a song. But it's your game - do whatever floats your boat.

ROUND 5 RESULTS

senecadawg2: Clint Mansell - The Last Man

Sending me a song from a film soundtrack was an interesting idea, and while I can't say I've heard of The Fountain before, this song was nice. It's very melancholy and haunting, with some beautiful piano and string melodies. I would have liked a bit more piano actually, as it only shows up at the beginning and the end. The majority of the song is a pure string section, and while it contains some great melodies that lay over the chord progression, it does get a bit repetitive. It's still very pretty, though. Also, I like that little creepy bit at the very end. Very interesting choice; I like it, and it fits the theme quite well.

Score: 8.0

Lucien: Abyssmal Sorrow - Cavernous Sorrow And Worthlessness

Oh boy. With a band name and song title like that, how could you possibly go wrong? :lol Well, the song definitely starts off very well. The clean guitar melody at the beginning is fantastic; it's incredibly sad and beautiful, and when it gets reprised again towards the end it works very well. The rest of the song is slow, doomy black metal. While I like slow doomy metal and the song definitely has a cold and depressing atmosphere, it suffers from the problem that a lot of black metal has: it sounds like absolute shit. You can just barely make out the melodies from the dense, muddy production, and the vocals don't even sound like vocals at all, though that's probably the point… If this song didn't sound so terrible and had a bit more clean guitar (like I said, that clean guitar melody is amazing), I probably would have liked it a lot more. But hey, you could have done worse.

Score: 7.5

?: Sentenced - End Of The Road

I just knew you were going to send me some form of melancholic Scandinavian metal for this round. :lol This song definitely delivers in that department. The first song has a good contrast between the heavy guitar riffs and the soft verses, and while it's not incredibly depressing, it's certainly melancholy. It kinda reminds me of Type O Negative (have you ever checked those guys out? I feel like they'd be right up your alley). The second half of the song is really cool. It's a lot more energetic while still retaining a somber mood, and the guitar work is really nice, both in terms of the riffs and the soloing. Pretty solid song.

Score: 8.5

elefantStone: Radiohead - Videotape

This is an incredibly beautiful song. The atmosphere and mood it conveys is really emotional. It's incredibly sad, but kinda "light" and uplifting at the same time, which is a combination that's really hard to pull off, but works extremely well. It reminds me a lot of Collapse The Light Into Earth by Porcupine Tree, another sad but bright song that's extremely beautiful. The main piano melody is great, and the way the vocals follow it works really well. While it's a bit repetitive, the added instrumentation at parts and the overall atmosphere keep this from becoming an issue. There's really not much else to say; this is just a beautiful, emotional song that really pulls at your heart strings. Good job.

Score: 8.5

Lolzeez: Olafur Arnarlds - Ljosio

This is probably the most simple song I got this round. Like senecadawg's submission, it's entirely piano and strings. The piano drives the song, and the melodies are very pretty. The violins fit in perfectly, and really add a lot. The atmosphere is very peaceful; it's not that sad, but it's not that happy either. It sits nicely in the middle. Again, there's not much else to say. This song is simple but very pretty, and that's good enough for this round.

Score: 8.0

jingle.boy: Queen - Who Wants To Live Forever

I've obviously heard some Queen songs before, but I haven't heard this one before, which is unfortunate, because it's pretty damn great. You said this song can be uplifting, not just sad. That's definitely correct. The song starts out sad, but gets more uplifting and bright as the song goes on. The string section is used incredibly well in all parts of the song, and Freddie's vocals are obviously fantastic. The way the song transitions from the melancholy first half into the bright, powerful second half is really awesome, and the full band kicks in at just the right time. Also, that chorus is great, especially the final one. Great flow, great song. See? You actually can earn high points from sending me old-school songs! You just have to send the right ones. ;)

Score: 8.5

Nekov: dredg - Cartoon Showroom

This is an interesting song. While it's relatively simple, it's very unique-sounding. The main guitar melody is what sticks out to me the most. It's incredibly beautiful, and it has an interesting rhythm to it. It's also used in the verses, which are also really great. The vocal melodies are really nice, and I like the second half of the verses when the vocalist goes up higher and that additional guitar line comes in. The song is filled with some nice atmospheric touches and some interesting instrument choices. I don't think the song is all that depressing, but that okay. It's a very pretty song, and I can't say I've heard very many songs like it.

Score: 8.5

Elite: Gov't Mule - Forevermore

Another simplistic, sad song. It's very emotional and on a very basic level; there's no crypticness or uncertainty, it's just a sad song about a sad topic. I can definitely appreciate that. The verses are bleak and somber, and the choruses are actually kinda catchy. There's not really anything to complain about, but at the same time there's nothing that really grabs me in particular. It's a good song, but I've definitely heard better.

Score: 8.0

LieLowTheWantedMan: The Antlers - Kettering

Well, this song certainly is depressing. There's nothing bright or hopeful about it, it's 100% cold, bleak, and lifeless. It's some really somber, dreary stuff; you definitely followed the theme well. While the atmosphere and mood of the song is wonderfully depressing, the song itself leaves a bit to be desired. The first half of the song is basically just a single piano loop with some sad but kinda weird-sounding vocals over them, and it gets a bit boring. Things pick up a bit for the second half when the full band comes in, but this section doesn't last for very long. The flow of the song is a bit strange; I've got a feeling that this is a song that works better within the context of the album as opposed to a singular track. But hey, kudos for sending me some of the most depressing stuff this round.

Score: 8.0

Scorpion: Pain Of Salvation - Never Learn To Fly

Sadly, this one didn't appeal to me that much. While the vocals are nice and I guess the song is kinda calm and soothing, I just found it to be a pretty dull and boring-sounding ballad. I don't find it to be particularly sad or beautiful, which is a pretty big problem for a ballad. Most of the song is just piano and vocals, which gets boring pretty quickly. Things start to pick up when the drums kick in, but then they just go away almost as soon as they come in. What was the point of that? Eh. I've heard lots of good things about this band, but this song didn't do anything for me. But hey, I'm sure they've got plenty of better songs, so feel free to send another one for another round.

Score: 7.0

ROUND 6: CO-OP ROUND

For this round, you must pair up with another participant and form a group of two. There will be five groups, and each one must send me a single song. Both members of the group will receive the same score for their submission, and there will only be five songs this round. It's up to you two to decide what to send me; it can be anything. Heavy, sad, atmospheric, proggy, whatever. You can choose your own groups. If there's nobody in particular you want to be with, I'll assign you someone if I need to. Once you've decided on what song your group will be submitting, one person in the group needs to PM me the song, it doesn't matter which one.

IMPORTANT: You must also give me a team name. It doesn't matter what it is, but you must have one.

I have heard a couple of Type O songs and I've actually thought about listening to one of their albums. Maybe I should've sent you the newest Paradise Lost song instead of The Enemy in the heavy round, because a lot of people have said it sounds like TON.

I have a team mate already  We'll send something awesome

For this round, you can send me any song, as long as it has a ton of kickass riffs. (Or a couple kickass riffs that repeat a lot, whatever) The more rhythm guitar the better! Bring on the chuggachug!
Sent some jazz.

Unless one of you send me a song that would be a contender for my top five songs of all time, I don't think anyone's going to get a 10/10. :lol A 9.5 is definitely a possibility, but the song has to be really, really good.

Surprise, round six results! Sorry this one took so long... :-[

ROUND 6 RESULTS

"Team Lol?" (Lolzeez, ?): Amorphis - Sampo

First thing's first, that intro is freaking awesome. The piano melody is great and the way the full band kicks in is fantastic. It's also got that great "soaring" atmosphere, well fitting for an album with "sky" in the title. This atmosphere is present in the choruses as well, which are also great. The song's got a pretty good flow and a decent amount of variety. The heavier sections like the riff after the second chorus and the slow part with the harsh vocals contrast nicely to the calmer, brighter sections, and nothing feels out of place. The song then wraps up nicely with an incredibly fantastic outro. I got no real complaints, this a really nice song.

Score: 8.5

"The Royalty" (Nekov, Elite): Frost* - Welcome To Nowhere

This one was pretty interesting. The first minute made me think this was going to be an electronic song (which I would not object to at all, fyi), but then the full band crashes in like a goddamn bulldozer, completely out of nowhere. Yeah, that big entrance is pretty damn kickass, I won't lie. So is that riff. I also really like the chorus; it's very powerful and quite catchy, too. Though what really makes this song noteworthy is the range of styles it contains. You've got the aforementioned heavy riff and choruses, the acoustic guitar in the verses, and the quiet electronic/piano sections. That's a good amount of variety for a five minute song, and it all ties together well, not feeling like an odd mishmash of different styles. Again, no real complaints.

Score: 8.5

"The Breakable Dawg & His Elephant" (senecadawg2, elefantStone): Seventh Wonder - Unbreakable

While this song was good, it unfortunately didn't leave much of an impact on me. It's very much pure prog metal, and while the instrumentation is fantastic and there are no specific parts of the song I'd call bad, it just feels a bit generic as far as prog metal is concerned. Especially that lead keyboard. That sound and style is just so overtly prog. :lol One part where the keyboard does work well is the main melody, and the guitar riff backing it up is pretty nice as well. What else is there to talk about? There's lots of solos and technically-proficient playing; the vocalist is good but not particularly noteworthy… Like I said, this is a good song, but I didn't really hear anything special.

Score: 8.0

"Getting All The 'Tang They Want" (jingle.boy, Scorpion): Iron Maiden - Paschendale

Scorpion, you're lucky this was a co-op round and your partner picked such an awesome song. You better get your ass back in here for round seven or you're gonna have a baaaad time. Anyways, Iron Maiden, as I've explained to two of you now, is a band I've heard some individual songs from, but I've never checked out any of their albums in full, which is why they aren't on the banned artists list. Unfortunately, this resulted in two separate submissions of Hallowed Be Thy Name, a song I love and have heard many times. :lol As for this song… I don't think it tops Hallowed Be Thy Name, but fuck, it comes pretty damn close. This is an awesome, awesome song. Where to begin? Well, as to be expected from Iron Maiden, there's some really fantastic riffs, particularly the main one and the one in the middle section of the song. The song's eight and a half minutes long, and it remains constantly energetic and engaging throughout. Great flow, too. There's not a dull moment, it's just a constant stream of awesome riffs and great melodies. Some parts of the song even have strings in the background, and they really add a lot. Damn… I really need to pick up some albums from these guys. You made a fantastic choice, jingle.boy. :) Best team name by far, too. :rollin

Score: 9.0

"Team GobbleGonads" (Lucien, LieLowTheWantedMan): The Storyline - Unchained

You guys didn't give me a team name. Therefore, you shall henceforth be referred to as Team GobbleGonads. :police:
ANYWAYS, onto the song. It sadly falls in to the same category as the Seventh Wonder song I also got this round: while it's good, it's not particularly memorable or grabbing. I've listened to this song about five times now, and I still can't really remember much of it. There aren't any bad sections, the song's just kinda unmemorable and a tad bit generic as far as prog metal is concerned. That main riff is really kickass though, awesome groove. The rest of the song is just good to okay.

Score: 8.0

ROUND 7 RESULTS

elefantStone: Unitopia - Tesla

This song is easily one of the most unique submissions I've got this roulette, and in a good way. It mixes progressive rock, jazz, and what sounds like a ton of other influences in a way that sounds really new to me. The funny thing is, I'm not really a big fan of retro progressive rock or jazz, but I really like this song. Maybe it's the way that it blends styles so well that appeals to me, but whatever the reason is, this song is great. The previously-mentioned blending of styles leads to some interesting instrumentation, and it all fits and is performed well. It's a pretty long song, but it doesn't get boring. The instrumental section that starts a few minutes in is easily the highlight of the song for me, and I've definitely caught myself recently humming the "all parts of the whole" part towards the end. This was incredibly unique-sounding song, and it's executed very well.

Score: 8.5

senecadawg2: Sigur Ros - Svefn-g-englar

While I love ( ), for whatever reason, I haven't bothered to check out any more albums by Sigur Ros. Maybe it's because, while I like post-rock, it's a genre that sounds a bit same-y to me. Anyways, onto the song. Well, it certainly is atmospheric, no surprise there. It's very peaceful, dreamy, and quite beautiful. It feels very restrained; it's a quiet song throughout, and the instrumentation is crafted very carefully to create a soft, ethereal sound, while not being too minimalistic. However, there's quite a few songs on ( ) that I prefer to this one. In fact, the constant softness of this song is probably my main problem with it. Many of the tracks on ( ) have a lot of quiet parts, but build up to a big crescendo or bombastic payoff. This song doesn't really have that, save for a few bars towards the end, after which the song quickly retreats back into the softness. And while this song is certainly emotional, in my opinion it doesn't really come close to songs like Untitled 1 or 3. However, this was still a beautiful song that I'll probably put on when I'm in the mood for something quiet, peaceful and soothing.

Score: 8.0

Nekov: Von Hertzen Brothers - Insomniac

This is a pretty simple song, which is good, because I got a crapton of songs this round close to or over the ten minute mark. :lol The first thing anyone will notice is that riff; it's a damn awesome riff, and that absolutely filthy guitar tone accompanies it well. The vocal lines are quite catchy as well, both for the verses and the chorus. The section after the second chorus is pretty cool, too. And that's basically all I have to say about this one. It's a simple song, and a good one, too.

Score: 8.0

jingle.boy: Yes - Roundabout

Out of all the old-school songs you've sent me in this roulette, this is easily one of the best ones. As I've said before, classic prog isn't one of my favorite genres, but this song was unique-sounding enough to appeal to me, and there's a good amount of positive things I have to say about it. I like the way the acoustic guitar is used; the intro is great and the way it's implemented in the verses works really well. Another highlight is the bass work, which is fantastic and groovy as hell. The song flows pretty well, and there's some really enjoyable sections, like the verses, the part in the middle, and the intro reprise with the atmospheric synth that comes directly after. I've heard a good amount of Yes before (my dad loves them), but this is easily the best song I've heard from them. So congratulations on that!

Score: 8.0

Lucien: The Enid - Tripping The Light Fantastic

This was certainly a pleasant surprise. I mentioned in my write-up for elefantStone's submission that while I'm not a big fan of progressive rock or jazz, the combination of the two seemed to work really well. Likewise, the unique combination of progressive rock and classical music works fantastically in this song, despite me not really being a fan of either genre on their own. Hooray, more unique-sounding stuff! This is a pretty damn great piece of music. The instrument choices and the layering of melodies is fantastic; it's really unlike anything I've ever head before. The calm parts build up to the bombastic payoffs very well, and the melodies are incredibly memorable. It's been proven many times that rock and symphonic music can work together quite well, but this song just takes it to a whole other level.

Score: 8.5

?: Barren Earth - As It Is Written

I can't come up with a good introduction for this write-up, so I'll just say that this song is awesome. It mixes metal with progressive rock in an interesting way; sorta like Opeth, but less heavy. The style of metal kinda feels very old-school, almost Black Sabbath-y, in a way, but it sounds very modern and polished at the same time. The slow, marching groove is really nice, and the riffs and melodies are great, particularly that main synth lead and the riff in the verses. I like how the majority of the vocals are clean; they fit in very well. I love the verses and the choruses, and the song stays interesting throughout. I initially thought the piano break in the middle felt really out-of-place, but it sets up a fantastic instrumental section, so I can't complain. The highlight of the song is easily the outro guitar solo. It ends the song on an amazing note, and leaves you feeling very satisfied. Enjoy your first 9/10. :)

Score: 9.0

Lolzeez: Ne Obliviscaris - Forget Not

If I were to solely judge this song on the first six minutes, it would easily be one of the best submissions of the roulette. The whole first half of the song before the vocals come in is absolutely fantastic. The violin is used really damn well, and it combined with the acoustic guitar create a great wintery, melancholy atmosphere. The song builds up very well, and then the distorted guitars and double bass drum come in, and the transition into the heavier second half of the song is awesome. Sadly, the second half of the song isn't as good. It's not bad by any means, but nothing from it really sticks out, and it feels a bit monotonous and repetitive. However, I'd say the amazing first half more than makes up for it.

Score: 8.5

LieLowTheWantedMan: Diablo Swing Orchestra - Honey Trap Aftermath

Fun fact: this is the only submission you've sent me where I've actually heard of the band before. You almost had a perfect streak! :lol So yeah, I've been interested in this band for a while now, as I love myself some crazy, wacky music. This song certainly delivers in that department; it's quirky and very fun to listen to. It's also groovy as hell, which I like. However, I find myself slightly disappointed. I notice you said that it's one of the band's least quirky songs, and I can sorta feel that. I was hoping for a bit more chaos and some metal elements, which this song doesn't have. On its own, it's a good song, but I think it could have been better.

Score: 8.0

Elite: Protest The Hero - Without Prejudice

Oh hey, it's these guys again. I'd definitely say I like this song a bit more than Sequoia Throne, which I got in round two. My main complaint with that song was that it was all over the place, with very abrupt transitions and barely any song structure. In that regard, this song fares a lot better. It feels a lot more concise, the sections last as long as they should, and it all flows pretty well. I really like the fast tempo; the song is very energetic while being pretty melodic at the same time. The riffs are cool and the vocals are nice… I'm still not sure if these guys are up my alley or not, but this song was pretty cool.

Score: 8.0

Alright, before we begin the final round, I've got a few extra points to award. These are some songs that have either grown on me since I first scored them, or for whatever reason, I thought that the original score was too low. If your submission shows up here, you got an extra .5 points.

Lucien: Haken - Falling Back To Earth

This is the only song I've deducted points from for not fitting the theme of the round at all, so I feel like that's a bit unfair. Plus, you're in last place right now, so I take pity on you. :lol This is a fantastic song, with an epic scope, a good amount of atmosphere, awesome riffs, and a great flow.

Score: 9.0

LieLowTheWantedMan: The Drones - I See Seaweed

I wasn't quite sure what to think of this song when you first submitted it, but it's grown on me, and I think it's the best song you've sent me. Yeah, the loud sections don't last very long and the vocalist sounds funny, but the song is incredibly unique. It's emotional, experimental and theatrical, and those payoffs are just awesome. Besides, you need at least ONE song that's gotten more than an 8.0 :lol

Score: 8.5

Lolzeez: Dir En Grey - Vinushka

Alright, this is the main reason I'm doing this extra points thing. I mentioned in my write-up that the song was still growing on me, and what do you know, now that I've listened to it a bunch of times, I can safely say that this song kicks immense amounts of ass. In fact, it made me check out the whole Oroborus album, and I can't thank you enough for that. Awesome album, awesome song.

Score: 9.0

With that, here are the updated scores going into the final round:

FINAL ROUND: THE CLOSER

Well, here we are. The eighth and final round. We started this roulette with the opener, now it's time for the closer. For the final round, you must send me a song that's climactic and would be the final song on an album or setlist. Keep in mind, like the first round, your song does not HAVE to be the final song on its respective album, as long as it feels climactic enough.

In addition, there are some special rules for this round:

1: I'm extending the running time limit for submissions from anything under thirteen minutes to anything under twenty minutes. Don't go too crazy though, if I end up with a ton of 16-19 minute songs, it's gonna take forever for me to finalize the results.

2: The score for this round will be DOUBLED. Instead of me scoring your song from 1-10, I will be scoring it from 1-20. As such, this is still anyone's game! Send me your absolute best, folks, as you can't afford to mess this one up.

Alright, that's all! Good luck, and I'll see you for the final results!

Since the final results are going to be pretty extensive, I'm going to split them up. What that means is: tomorrow, I'll be posting the write-ups for all the songs for the final round, but I won't reveal the exact scores. The day after, I'll reveal the scores and show the final rankings for all the participants, and that'll be it! Stay tuned!

Alright folks, time for the first half of the final results! As said before, today I will post the write-ups for the submissions for the final round, but I will not be revealing the exact scores. The FINAL final results will be posted tomorrow. Now, with that said...

FINAL ROUND RESULTS

Lucien: Rush - Natural Science

I don't really know why you thought this was a risky/reckless move; I like Rush. I've never heard this song before, and I'd say it was pretty good. It's definitely got some memorable riffs and melodies. The main guitar arpeggio that plays during the "wheels within wheels" parts is really cool, and the main riff of the second movement is pretty kickass. What I definitely like most about this song is the frantic tempo and the fast-paced energy, which is especially noticeable in the verses of the second movement. Sadly, the song kinda loses me as soon as the tempo slows down at around the five minute mark. From that point on, there weren't any memorable sections or melodies, except for the very end, which was well-done. If I were to compare this song to your other Rush submission, Jacob's Ladder, I would say that while this song has higher highs, Jacob's Ladder is more consistent and just a tad bit better overall. This was still a good song though, and a fitting final submission from you.

jingle.boy: Gowan - A Criminal Mind

You should be glad I've heard Won't Get Fooled Again, because this song is a lot better, in my opinion. :lol In fact, aside from the Iron Maiden song, this is the best song you've sent me this roulette. There are a few things that make this song so good, the first of which are the melodies. They are all very strong, and the vocalist's delivery is great. The choruses and verses are all fantastic, and the piano/synth leads work well. Speaking of which, the instrumentation is VERY 80's-sounding, especially with those electronic drums and synth sounds. However, I think they actually fit the atmosphere of the song perfectly, to the point where the song might not have been as good without them. The whole thing has a great melancholy mood, which I like, and the song changes and adds new elements at a good pace to keep it interesting and engaging throughout the seven minutes. This was a surprisingly great submission; looks like your love for old-school music finally paid off in this roulette. :tup

senecadawg2: Deafheaven - The Pecan Tree

My first impressions of this song weren't that great, but I can say now that this a pretty fantastic song overall. Well, after the first part of the song, anyway. I'll be honest, I don't really like the first four minutes much. It's the type of black metal that's determined to totally obscure all the melody behind a wall of blast beats, screams, and noise, which just doesn't appeal to me at all. Thankfully, things get a lot better once the break comes in. The calm middle part is quite beautiful, especially when that piano melody enters. One thing I can say about the whole song is that it's definitely somber and emotional throughout, which is great. It's very bleak, but in a beautiful way. Anyways, I like how the calm section subtly builds up as it goes on, then bursts into that grand finale. The last few minutes of the song is definitely what gives the track its purpose. It's an absolutely fantastic finale; it's bombastic, it's emotional, it's what elevates the song to another level. So yeah, this is a song that ranges from okay to outstanding, getting better and better as it goes on. So, when averaged out, it's not the best thing you've sent me this roulette, but it's certainly up there.

?: Paradise Lost - The Glorious End

Well, that's one fitting song title, if I do say so myself. :lol This song just screams "closer", it's incredibly climactic and dramatic, and it's got a really nice slow, doomy tempo that's accompanied by some great melodies and riffs. While the first half of the song is great, the second half is where things really pick up. The break in the middle works really well, and the awesome finale afterwards what really sells the song. That doom riff combined with that vocal melody is just a killer combination. There's not much else to say… this was a glorious end indeed.

Lolzeez: Deafheaven - Dream House

Oh boy, another round where I got two songs from the same album. :lol Anyways, remember how I said that I didn't really like the first four minutes of The Pecan Tree? It just sounded like a bunch of noise to me, with all the melody buried under the constant blast beats and screams. Yeah, this is basically a whole song of that. I get that this sound is completely intentional, but again, it just doesn't appeal to me as music. Thankfully, the song does pick up a little bit after the short break in the middle. I actually really like the very end, when that lead noise guitar melody comes in. I wouldn't call this a bad song, but I didn't like it that much, either. While I thought The Pecan Tree was pretty great overall, if this is one of the better songs on the album, I don't really see myself checking out the rest of it any time soon.

Nekov: Pendragon - A Man Could Die Out Here

This was a nice song; nothing amazing, but nice. It's got a very noticeable ethereal atmosphere, and the guitars and keyboards are used in just the right way to convey said atmosphere. I also like the main bass grove, even though it's very simple. The song's got a very good flow that feels like it takes you on a journey… While there are some vocals, I think the song would have worked just as well as an instrumental. While this isn't one of the best songs you've sent me, it's still pretty good.

elefantStone: The Tallest Man On Earth - Kids On The Run

I admire your decision to avoid sending a 16-minute prog epic (though nobody this round sent anything over eleven minutes…) and send me something more simple, but this song is just a bit too minimalistic for my tastes. I also find the vocalist's voice to be a bit grating. Still, it is a pretty song, and I can tell that it's filled with some genuine emotion. If you're into the whole singer/songwriter type of music, I suppose that's that really matters. It's just not really my thing.

LieLowTheWantedMan: Kvelertak - Utrydd Dei Svake

This is pretty much all I could ask for from a kickass metal song. It's got awesome energy and a good balance between being heavy and being melodic. I suppose Mastodon would be an obvious comparison, but they don't sound all that similar. This song is filled with some really kickass riffs, especially the one after the first chorus, and that whole outro/extended guitar solo is really cool. It's an awesome way to end the song, and fits the theme of the round well. Congratulations, this is easily your best submission this roulette. :)

Elite: Spock's Beard - The Doorway

What better way to end the roulette than with a good old prog rock album closer? The piano intro is nice, and I really like the way the full band comes in. The song is filled with some great melodies; I especially like how several motifs and melodies that are initially played in the piano intro are repeated in the rest of the song with different instruments. Flow-wise, while I feel like the song meanders a bit sometimes, it never gets the point where it gets boring, and the length feels about right. It all wraps up nicely in the end, too. The final chorus is very powerful, and just when it sounds like the song has ended, the finale that comes afterwards is just awesome. This is definitely a great closer, and a really good song too.

Alright! Are you filled with suspense yet? The final results will be up tomorrow. This round ended up shifting a lot of positions due to the double scores, so the final rankings might be a bit surprising. How do you think you did? Find out tomorrow!

Well folks, today is the day! Your fates shall be revealed. It's been fun, guys. It was a bit overwhelming at times, but you've definitely introduced me to a lot of new, awesome music, and I thank you for that. Hopefully it was enjoyable for you too!

Now, as promised, here are the scores for the final round. Remember, the score for this round was doubled, so these points are out of twenty.

And with that, here we are! The final, final results! I shall reveal the final rankings, one by one, and I'll also rank the songs of each contestant, just for the heck of it (It has no effect on your score).

And here we go!

FINAL RESULTS

#10: Scorpion - 49 Points

In absentia: Scorpion. Hopefully he's doing alright and comes back soon, but while he was here, he sent some really awesome stuff. He even proved to me that Trivium may not actually suck! It's a shame he wasn't here for the whole thing, because I'm sure he would have submitted some great stuff during the final couple rounds.

Your song rankings: (Remember, this doesn't affect your score at all)

1: Trivium - Shogun
2: Iron Maiden - Paschendale (Even though you didn't really send this one at all) :lol
3: Ihsashn - On The Shores
4: Protest The Hero - Sequoia Throne
5: Wintersun - Winter Madness
6: Pain Of Salvation - Never Learn To Fly

#9: Lucien - 71.5 Points

I sincerely hoped you enjoyed your first roulette, even though you would have come in last place if Scorpion hadn't left. :lol You definitely sent some good stuff. You made some risks that didn't always pay off, but at least you tried. I get the feeling that you sent some songs that you thought I would like, even if you might not have liked them yourself (I kinda doubt you listen to bands like Abyssmal Sorrow :lol). If that's true, it was an interesting strategy. Don't let these results demotivate you; you did good, and I'm sure you'll do even better in your future roulettes!

Your song rankings:

1: Haken - Falling Back To Earth
2: The Enid - Tripping The Light Fantastic
3: Rush - Jacob's Ladder
4: Rush - Natural Science
5: Paul Winter - Canyon Chaconne
6: The Storyline - Unchained
7: Abyssmal Sorrow - Cavernous Sorrow And Worthlessness
8: Zero Hour - The Falcon's Cry

#8: Lolzeez - 72 Points

Your scores were all over the place. :lol You were another risk-taker, and I appreciate that. While there were a few of your submissions I didn't really like, you made up for it with some ones that I really loved. I really thank you for sending me that Dir En Grey song, as it made me get Uroborus, which is probably gonna be up there in my top 50 albums of all time. Thanks for participating, and remember, next time someone asks for a heavy guitar-oriented track, don't send them a jazz song! :lol

Your song rankings:

1: Dir En Grey - Vinushka
2: Amorphis - Sampo
3: Ne Obliviscaris - Forget Not
4: Leprous - Bilateral
5: Cult Of Luna - Finland
6: Olafur Arnalds - Ljosio
7: Deafheaven - Dream House
8: John Coltrane - Resolution

#7: jingle.boy - 72.5 Points

Despite being in last place for most of the roulette, you went out with a bang, and here you are! Thanks for sending me all those old-school songs; though not all of them were that relevant to my tastes, I appreciate your desire to expose me to the "golden era" of music. I think you realized pretty quickly that our tastes in music are pretty damn different, but that's okay. :lol Thanks for participating!

8: Led Zepplin - Whole Lotta Love

#6: elefantStone - 73 Points

I gotta say, you did pretty damn well in this roulette, especially for your first one! You dropped a couple ranks in the very end, but that's okay. Since you're still new to these forums, I encourage you to post more often; this is a great community with some great people. And your English seems fine from what I've read. :) Thanks for participating, and I hope to see you more often!

Wow, you sure came out of nowhere in the end. :lol After a string of songs that were good but not quite great, you saved the best for last, and the double points launched you all the way into the top five! As I mentioned earlier, except for Diablo Swing Orchestra and maybe Kvelertak, all of your submissions have been from bands I haven't even heard of! So congratulations for that, you definitely sent me some obscure and interesting stuff. Thanks for participating, and good luck with finishing your own roulette... I feel kinda sorry for your participants. :neverusethis:

#4: Nekov - 74.5 Points

There's a reason you were in the top two or three for pretty much the whole roulette: your submissions were by far the most consistent. You never sent a bad song, and the amount of 8.5s you got was pretty crazy. Ranking your songs is going to be really difficult. :lol Thanks for being in my roulette! You didn't win this one, but you came pretty damn close.

Your song rankings:

1: Pagan's Mind - God's Equation
2: Russian Circles - Geneva
3: Frost* - Welcome To Nowhere

6: Pendragon - A Man Could Die Out Here
7: Von Hertzen Brothers - Insomniac

#3: Elite - 75 Points

After hovering around in the top five for the whole roulette, you safely managed to secure your spot in third place! Have a bronze trophy! You sent me some really awesome stuff, especially that Maudlin Of The Well song. You were also spot-on with following the round themes; if I awarded extra points to the submissions that fit the round theme the most, you might have won. :lol But hey, third place ain't too shabby! Thanks for participating. :)

Your song rankings:

1: Maudlin Of The Well - They Aren't All Beautiful
2: Firewind - Into The Fire
3: Spock's Beard - The Doorway

5: Haken - Atlas Stone
6: Protest The Hero - Without Prejudice

8: Wolves In The Throne Room - Dia Arto

#2: ? - 76 Points

Like LieLow, you just came right out of nowhere in the end. :lol You can thank your awesome submissions in the last few rounds for that! Your submissions shared the same style a lot, but not in a bad way. You told me you might have played it a bit safe for this roulette. *shrugs* Maybe, but you got second place, so who gives a fuck. :lol Thanks for participating, my Scandinavian friend!

Your song rankings:

1: Barren Earth - As It Is Written
2: Paradise Lost - The Glorious End
3: Amorphis - Sampo
4: Sentenced - End Of The Road

6: Paradise Lost - The Enemy
7: Fates Warning - Firefly
8: Dark Tranquillity - Nothing To No One

And now, the winner of Buddyhunter1's Roulette...

Unsurprisingly...

#1: senecadawg2 - 76.5 Points

CONGLATURATION!!! A WINNAR IS YOU! While things got a bit dangerous towards the end, you managed to stay in the lead for the entire roulette, and in the end, you won by half a point! :D Hopefully the suspense didn't cause any trauma. All I can say is that you deserved this win. For the whole first half of the roulette, you were unstoppable. You continuously scored top points for your excellent submissions; it's clear that you have a genuine love for the songs that you're sending, and I can definitely say that you've got a pretty awesome taste in music. :tup You introduced me to some awesome stuff, including a band that hasn't even finished their first album yet! While your lead started to slip in the last few rounds, you managed to hold on. This is your first win in a roulette, correct? If so, congratulations again! I'm sure you'll have plenty more to come. Enjoy the win, and thank you for participating! :)

Your song rankings:

1: Gallowbraid - Stone Of Remembrance
2: Circus Maximus - Architect Of Fortune
3: Deafheaven - The Pecan Tree
4: Ulver - Eos
5: Coheed And Cambria - Welcome Home
6: Sigur Ros - Svefn-g-englar
7: Seventh Wonder - Unbreakable
8: Clint Mansell - The Last Man

And that's all, folks! Buddyhunter1's Roulette Of Fun And Tears has come to an end. Thank you all once more for participating! I definitely plan on doing another one, but not for a while... roulettes are time consuming. :lol If you've got any constructive criticism, I'd love to hear it, but otherwise, that's it! Take it easy, guys. :)
