The first round will begin once Elite's roulette is over (hence the thread title :P), so you'll have to wait a couple of days. I hope I'll get to hear some great music and you'll have fun! :) If you have any questions regarding this roulette or my musical tastes, feel free to ask.

Ready to rock this shinding.

Out of curiosity, what do you mean by open or new?
-
:)
-
Some additional info: I don't know how long this will take, but if the roulette is still going on in November the pace may slow down because of my exams, and I have some school work to do even before that so delays are possible.
Also, you have a chance to get some bonus points in certain rounds, but I'll tell more of that later!
Out of curiosity, what do you mean by open or new?
In most roulettes there's an open round with no restrictive theme and the participants can send whatever they want. As for "new"... I'll reveal the details when the round comes, but the description says a lot ;)
-
Rich got finished, so here we go!
ROUND 1: Melody overload
Don't we all just love melodies? I love them so much that I want you to send me songs that include at least one section with two melodies on the top of each other (for example a guitar lead and a vocal melody like here: Example 1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YANGB9KqYo#t=2m23s), Example 2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qjiWb1O_L4#t=51s))
Deadline: Monday, 7 AM (GMT)
I know this is a weird theme, but I swear it'll get easier after this! :lol

Do you like growls/screams?
I'd be pretty persistent if I had tried all those bands in the OP list without tolerating harsh vocals at all :lol But yeah, death growls are totally fine and I can listen to screaming as well, although I'm not really into the kind of screaming heard in "core" stuff.
E: I see you sent already, but it's good to have some advice for those who were wondering the same thing.
-
Damn, I thought it was Friday yesterday, which is why I made Monday the deadline! :lolpalm: You have a lot of time to think, but if you have something in mind already, please send it right away. I've been listening to the 3 songs I've received so far and would like to get more soon.
-
Your banned list has DTP on it, but are his earlier solo works banned too? And what about SYL?
-
Only DTP is banned, because I've heard Epicloud. I have to warn you that there was only one song that I truly liked on that album (I think it was the next-to-last one). I also heard some SYL songs at a party I went to last week and they were good background music but not exactly what I would listen to on my own. However, you can still send something from his earlier solo albums, preferably some less chaotic and/or cheerful stuff :D
-
Thanks. In that case, see your PM :hat
-
Only missing
LieLow and DC...
Warning: you all will only have 2 days to send your songs in the upcoming rounds, because the themes are pretty straightforward and you have seen them already.
-
I'll probably post the results tomorrow, depending on when I receive Dylan's submission.

ROUND 1 RESULTS
(note: I'll give, or at least try to give a different score to each song in every round)
Nekov: Blind Guardian* - Thorn
*or as Nekov had typed in the PM, Bling Guardian :D
My interest in power metal has been extremely low lately, so I wasn't sure how I'd react to this song. However, I found it rather enjoyable, perhaps because it's a mid-tempo number. I like the folky acoustic guitars at the beginning and the end of the song and there are some neat leads and powerful vocals. This was a strong start for the roulette!
9/10
Lolzeez: Symphony X - The Accolade
Another power metal(ish) song, but much proggier... The violin in the intro is nice, the parts with crunchy riffing are awesome and I like Allen's singing (much better than on Psychosane :lol). This piece is melodically interesting thanks to the numerous key changes. I think the section with just the church organ and the vocals is a bit cheesy and slightly interrupts the flow of the song, but other than that I like this.
8/10
WindMaster: Fair to Midland - Coppertank Island
The intro is really cool, but the verse... WTF?! The weird dance-y vibe was a total letdown on the first listen. I'm also not crazy about the singer's voice and I think the song ends pretty quickly. If they had taken the great bits and expanded them into a, say, 4-minute song I could've liked this more. At least I have "I'M A WHALE!" stuck in my head now :lol
5.5/10
Onno: Devin Townsend - Nobody's Here
Onno sent me like three songs before settling on this one :lol Luckily it was worth it because I enjoy this. Nobody's Here is a nice ballad with a great guitar solo and enjoyable atmosphere. I guess the pictures in the video helped because winter is my favorite season and now I associate this song with that time of the year :D I have to give some criticism for the ending, because it feels unnecessarily repetitive, but it doesn't ruin the song by any means.
8.5/10
Scorpion: Devin Townsend - Life
Another Devin song! If Nobody's Here has a winter vibe, then Life is a summer song. It's more positive and energetic, but as a fan of darker stuff I prefer NH. The chorus is pretty catchy, but the song lacks the final "wow" factor that would make me rate it higher. Good tune nevertheless!
7.5/10
MoraWintersoul: PPPPPP - Pushing Onwards (I was clever and googled the album title to see who it was made by)
You promised to send me something normal! :rollin But yeah... This is a cute piece of 8-bit music with some pleasant melodies. It was a nice change from the other songs I received, but it's also kind of hard to rate this because it's so different. I think I'll stick to 8-bit versions of songs I like :lol
7/10
LieLowTheWantedMan: The Devin Townsend Band - Deadhead
And more Devin... At this point it's clear the guy has a good ear for melodies that appeal to you guys. Deadhead starts in a very promising way, I like the feel of the song and Devin's vocals are impressive, but unfortunately the constant repetition makes it a chore to listen to. With some trimming down I could've loved this song, now it's kind of boring because not a lot is happening musically.
6/10
Dark Castle: Exemption - Hyperspiral
Exemption is the only band - besides whoever made the 8-bit song - I had never heard of before this round. On the first listen I was like "eh...", but after two more listens I started to like it a bit more. I'm still not completely sold, but the riffing is neat and there's some catchiness, especially in the "wooah" bit at the end (which I found myself humming to!). I wouldn't listen to a full album of music like this, but I was positively surprised at how much this grew on me.
6.5/10
Current ranking:
Nekov - 9
Onno - 8.5
Lolzeez - 8
Scorpion - 7.5
MoraWintersoul - 7
Dark Castle - 6.5
LieLowTheWantedMan - 6
WindMaster - 5.5
After the Devin/power metal/weirdness round Nekov is in the lead! However, this is just the beginning so anything can happen ;)
ROUND 2: No electric guitars
Now it's time to go beyond the standard rock/metal realm! The title says it all: send me something that doesn't include any electric guitars. I know there's a lot of great acoustic/electronic/other music out there that I haven't heard before. I realized that I'll have little to no time for listening on Thursday, so I give you 3 days (72 hours) to send your submissions.
-
Yay, glad I settled on Nobody's Here!
-
Yeah, Deadhead does take a few listens so maybe it wasn't the best choice, heh. It's arguably his most highly regarded song though so I guess that's why I thought of it. :o
-
Deadhead >>> Nobody's Here
-
Deadhead >>> Nobody's Here
True that, but Nobody's Here is fucking awesome too and I had a feeling it would be more accessible. Deadhead does become better every single listen though.
-
I gave each song 3-4 listens before judging, but for some reason Deadhead didn't click with me. Anyway, I think I've received enough songs by Devin now :lol
-
Sent the next motherfucking song in this motherfucking plane :lol
also told ya you'd have a Devin avalanche

Bling Guardian sounds a lot funnier :P. I'll send something for the upcoming round later today.

ROUND 2 RESULTS
MoraWintersoul: Apocalyptica - Farewell
As a Finn I've obviously heard Apocalyptica's radio hits, but I'm not familiar with their instrumental side. As you said, this song is super sad and of course I'm a sucker for that kind of music :lol I gotta appreciate how Apocalyptica manage to make heavy-sounding music with just cellos. This song would've been perfect for round 8, but sending it now was a good idea, because this was one of the highlights of the round for me.
9/10
Onno: Mark Knopfler - Privateering
My dad is a Dire Straits fan and I've liked the stuff I've heard by them. Knopfler's solo material seems to be pretty different from his former band's music, but I enjoy the mildly melancholic vibe of this song and the build-up is great. I also like how he hums to the guitar melody at some points; it's pretty infectious :D Maybe I should pick up my guitar and learn this piece...
8.5/10
Nekov: Sea Wolf - In Nothing
Acoustic indie... I like the instrumentation and the simplistic (bass?) riff around the 2-minute mark is neat, but I'm not crazy about the singer's voice and the melodies didn't manage to grab me. So yeah, you were right when you thought this might not be my cup of tea, but I think it's an alright tune.
6.5/10
Dark Castle: CHVRCHES - Gun
Just when I was wondering if I'm gonna get any electronic stuff I received this piece of synth pop. The singer's voice is beautiful and the song is extremely catchy! I don't like dancing, but I could do some improvised moves to this tune, because I love it :lol I recommend this to anyone who thinks no good pop music is made anymore.
9.5/10
LieLowTheWantedMan: The Knife - We Share Our Mother's Health
Unlike some other bands/artists my sister is a fan of, The Knife isn't on the forbidden list because she hasn't played anything by them when I've been around. I heard some 10-minute piece of theirs on the radio (you read that right!) in August and I found it really weird, but as you said this song is somewhat accessible. I'll probably never become a fan of this band due to the vocals, but I find this song likeable, because it's not too bizarre, but not too safe either.
7/10
WindMaster: Trioscapes - Blast Off
Jazz metal? :o I've never heard anything like this before! The song is pretty crazy, but extremely cool at the same time. I like how unique and fun this is - the saxophone playing gave me a wide smile and the bass soloing is neat. Good musicianship!
8/10
Lolzeez: Fiona Apple - Periphery
I assume this is some kind of indie stuff? The piano playing is nice and the song has a playful vibe, but for some reason it failed to grab me properly. While decent, the song is a bit run-of-the-mill for my taste, because I've heard stuff like this before by other artists and I can't help getting this "been there, done that" feel.
6/10
Scorpion: The Dresden Dolls - Delilah
For some reason this song reminds me a little bit of Anathema's cover of Better Off Dead by Bad Religion. That's not a bad thing at all though! I like the singer's voice and the build-up works really well. Not a mindblowing tune, but I definitely enjoy it. Funnily enough, one of my friends recently posted on FB how she has just discovered TDD and loves them. Maybe I'll try some other songs of theirs in the near future ;)
7.5/10
Current ranking:
Onno - 17
Dark Castle - 16
MoraWintersoul - 16
Nekov - 15.5
Scorpion - 15
Lolzeez - 14
WindMaster - 13.5
LieLowTheWantedMan - 13
Onno is in the lead now! All in all, this was a really good round and I received a huge variety of music. Remember that 6/10 is the same as 3/5, so you haven't sent me any below average songs so far!
ROUND 3: Lead vocals by multiple singers
Once again, the title says it all. Your song doesn't have to be "just" a duet, because there's no limit for the amount of singers, but remember that they have to sing some lines of their own instead of mere backing vocals or harmonies. I won't give you a specific deadline, because I'll go on a trip on either Sunday or Monday and won't be able to use Youtube for a day, so it's possible that the results won't be posted until Tuesday. But of course if you manage to send your stuff quickly enough I may post the results on Sunday already!

Updated the band list in the OP. Additionally, here's some important info:
As I said in my previous post I'll go on a trip tomorrow, but due to a change of plans I'll be away for 2 days (with no computer). If you send your submissions right away, I'll post the results for round 3 before I go and I'll listen to the round 4 songs when I get back from the trip.

ROUND 3 RESULTS
Dark Castle: Black Tusk - Bring Me Darkness
I have no idea which metal subgenre this song belongs to, but it's pretty cool. Unfortunately I'm not into the shouting vocal style the singers use here (melodic vocals or actual growls would've worked better IMO), but musically this song isn't bad - there's solid riffing that reminds me a bit of old stoner/doom metal and the bass-driven bit is neat.
7/10
Lolzeez: Ayreon - Isolation
I kind of knew someone would send Ayreon because of the theme :D But yeah, there's no way a song featuring LaBrie AND Åkerfeldt can be bad! The spacey interlude after the 5½-minute mark reminds me of On the Run by Pink Floyd and it's followed by some good soloing. All in all, the song has great dynamics and the interplay between the singers is nice.
8.5/10
Scorpion: Diablo Swing Orchestra - A Rancid Romance
Some kind of weird tango/opera metal... :eek The combination is fun and cool, but this kind of music is a bit too crazy for my taste. That said, the heavy bits are tasty and the song manages to remain somewhat coherent despite the mood changes.
6.5/10
Onno: Diablo Swing Orchestra - A Tap Dancer's Dilemma
Another DSO song... Unfortunately I like this less than the previous one, because the craziness level is even higher here. The beginning of the song is cool though. Sorry I have to rate this so low, dude!
5.5/10
MoraWintersoul: Star One - Human See, Human Do
A. Lucassen must have a phone book with the numbers of every prog/metal singer in the world :lol The intro is very rocking - dat Hammond! The vocalists get to show their talents, but the song is musically good as well and doesn't solely rely on the stars. Swanö's growling bit is awesome :metal To quote the top commenter on the YT video: "human hear, human like".
8/10
Nekov: Pure Reason Revolution - Bullits Dominae
The clean guitar intro caught my attention and I was hooked right away! The song has a vibe reminiscent of Porcupine Tree and Katatonia, sounding very atmospheric and kind of dark. The singers have great voices for this kind of music and the little subtleties like the violin add to the greatness. Not a perfect song, but pretty close! :hefdaddy
9.5/10
LieLowTheWantedMan: Sweet Trip - DSCO
"IDM indie pop sorta music with shoegaze-like production". I found this description very intriguing and the song does sound like a more electronic and accessible My Bloody Valentine. There's a pleasantly light feel here... Very innocent and perhaps kind of childlike, but not too naive at all. Me likey!
9/10
WindMaster: Of Monsters and Men - Mountain Song
The folky upbeat vibe is neat and the song is catchy. I find the male singer's voice kind of annoying (this quality seems to be typical for indie :lol), but luckily the girl performs more vocals because she has a nice voice. Also, it seems that there's some unwritten rule that every indie song needs to include some clapping :rollin
7.5/10
Current ranking:
Nekov - 25
MoraWintersoul - 24
Dark Castle - 23
Onno - 22.5
Lolzeez - 22.5
LieLowTheWantedMan - 22

WindMaster - 21
Nekov is at the top again and the standings have shifted a bit. This round was kind of inconsistent, but as always I received some awesome songs too :)
ROUND 4: B-sides
The first song you hear by any band or artist usually is a "hit" or at least a regular album track, but this time I want you to impress me with something that hasn't been released on the standard edition of a full-length album. Songs from EP's are allowed!
As I previously said I'll be away from home for a couple of days and won't be able to listen to any of your submissions until Tuesday evening at earliest, so you should expect results on Wednesday (assuming all the songs have been sent by then).
-
Cool! :) Glad you liked.
-
Well, I kinda expected this :lol Props to zeez for sending Ayreon, should've thought of that :)

Only LieLow and WindMaster's submissions are missing, I'll start listening when I get back home in a few hours.

ROUND 4 RESULTS
Lolzeez: Talk Talk - John Cope
I've heard good things about Talk Talk and been supposed to check them out, but never actually done so. Better late than never, because this song has a great relaxed atmosphere - mellow but not boring. The singer reminds me a bit of Steven Wilson and the keyboard work is neat. I really need to listen to some Talk Talk album soon!
9.5/10
Dark Castle: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Long Progression
I thought this song would be long and progressive :neverusethis: Funky music isn't my thing and knowing the RHCP style I wasn't expecting a lot from this song, but it's actually decent. I'm still not convinced this kind of stuff is my cup of tea and don't enjoy the vocals that much, but I wouldn't mind hearing this again.
6/10
Scorpion: Agalloch - Pantheist
Wow, the photo in the video fits the song perfectly! Listening to this acoustic/ambient piece makes me think of wintry forests and that's a good thing :D Agalloch is a familiar name and I know they're a metal band (Mikael Åkerfeldt once said he can hear some things in their songs that have been ripped off from Opeth - I have the magazine where he says this!), but I find it refreshing to hear this kind of music instead of something heavy. I like the little elements like the wordless vocals, electric guitars and percussion that add to the song and prevent it from becoming monotonous.
8.5/10
Onno: Rammstein - Mein Land
Rammstein are very popular in Finland and I've heard some of their songs, but not this one. The video is really funny, but also overshadows the song itself, which isn't that special. It lacks a catchy chorus or an ass-kicking riff that would make it stand out. I know Rammstein can do better, so maybe there's a reason this wasn't released on an album.
7/10
MoraWintersoul: Beastmilk - Children of the Atom Bomb
Finnish post-punk... Looks like these guys are going to play in Tampere next week! Anyway, this song is nice but lacks something, maybe due to the short duration. It just comes and goes without leaving an impression. I like the feel of the song though.
6.5/10
Nekov: Russian Circles - Death Rides a Horse
Instrumental metal (or instrumetal :P)... There's some cool riffing and I like the explosive ending. The bit after the 2½-minute mark is especially great! However, my attention was kind of drifting at times, which forces me to give a slightly lower score.
7.5/10
LieLowTheWantedMan: Elliott Smith - Miss Misery
I've only heard OSI's cover of Christian Brothers and I don't find that song too great, but it's good that Smith has written something better. There are some great vocal harmonies and catchy melodies here! I also like how there's some drumming so this isn't just a basic singer/songwriter tune (although I wouldn't have a problem with one).
8/10
WindMaster: ISIS - Pliable Foe
I haven't heard a lot of post-metal, but now I think I should listen to more of it! This song is almost 8 minutes long, but the build-up keeps things interesting - the clean guitars and vocals get replaced with distorted guitars and screams towards the end. Perhaps kind of predictable, but the transitions are seamless and the atmosphere remains the same without getting too repetitive.
9/10
Current ranking:
Nekov - 32.5
Lolzeez - 32
MoraWintersoul - 30.5

Nekov stays in the lead, but the competition is getting tougher!
ROUND 5: Atmospheric
I love atmospheric music, so I want you to send me something that fits the description. Dreamy, ethereal or whatever... Use your imagination! :D Now that I'm not travelling I give you 2 days (48 hours) for sending songs.
-
Well, I was expecting that, but I couldn't come up with anything better :lol I do have something great for this round, sending in a few minutes.
-
:D
-
Awww yeah! :hat
Now,I gotta send some good stuff so I can pass Nekov. :metal

8/10
Milena, you rock! ?, you short changed her at least 7 points. This song is at the top of my last.fm ratings. Fantastic song!

I suspected there was a reason you didn't have the Red Hot Chili Peppers on your list :P Usually RHCP are a band people love or hate, but I'm glad you enjoyed the song at least, so it wasn't a total bust :tup

That Star One song was awesome, but as always the competition was tough. Giving scores can be nerve-wrecking sometimes!
On a side note, here's Åkerfeldt's comment on Agalloch in the original context (translated by me):
Can you hear the influence of Opeth on other bands?
At least not in the music of [In Flames and Meshuggah]! (laughs) But of course you sometimes come across bands like that... I think our style is so refined that it's hard for those copying it to hide the influence. Sometimes you see a demo band whose name is taken from a song title of ours or the combination of a few titles, for example Morningrise. I once came across this band called Agalloch. They reportedly hated Opeth, even though some of their songs were clearly rip-offs of the things we do.
I also remember one of my friends saying Agalloch's music is alright, but the vocals suck. Not very encouraging comments, but I'm happy to say the song Scorp sent is great!
-
The vocals certainly don't suck, you just might not find them to your tastes if you don't like much black metal.
-
I'm not big on black metal vocals (or the subgenre in general), but I guess at least their folk/ambient side is worth checking out! BTW, the guy who made the "Agalloch's vocals suck" comment likes black metal much more than I do :lol
-
Cool. :) I think I might be good at this category, I just have to think of what the best choice will be.
-
Really glad you liked ISIS!

Sent already.

Not even 24 hours have passed since I posted the previous results and I've received almost everyone's submission already! :tup I've listened to each song once and one of them is so amazing that I feel like rating it 10/10 :hefdaddy

WindMaster

C'mon Windmaster!
-
Just sent! :)

I like lurking in other people's roulettes from time to time. And reading the results for round two I have to thank Dark Castle for submitting that CHVRCHES song. Reading the write-up made me want to listen and man, it was sonically wonderful. Eargasm. Thank you.
:)

That's great to hear man! :tup

It reminded me why I love music. Always love that feeling.

I'm glad my write-up made you listen to that song! :tup It seems that this roulette is a good way of discovering new music not only for myself, but others as well :D
ROUND 5 RESULTS
Onno: Ludovico Einaudi - I Giorni
This is a piano-only piece and I love the sound of piano, so it was a good choice! This song sounds like it could've been in some film. Maybe it's kind of repetitive, but the melodies and the feel are so lovely that I don't mind :heart Instead of being boring it makes you close your eyes and begin to relax.
9/10
Dark Castle: Mouth of the Architect - Sharpen Your Axes
The title of the song and the name of the band made me think "this is probably some post-metal stuff" and I was right :lol This song is alright, but the clean vocals sound kind of amateurish, the dissonant leads put me off and I'm not sold on the heavy part in the second half. That said, the ambient ending is pretty cool and saves the song.
6/10
Scorpion: Grayceon - War's End
There's some nice cello playing here and the song sounds a little bit jazzy to my ears. The atmosphere is decent, but not captivating enough, because I felt kind of bored by it at times. I can't put my finger on it, but it feels like the song lacks warmth or something... dunno!
7/10
LieLowTheWantedMan: Hammock - I Can Almost See You
The opening chord alone sounds very warm and inviting, but the song itself is something even better: I was listening to it at the noon while it was snowing outside and that made the experience magical. Not a lot of songs give me shivers, but this one did. Thanks for sending some of the most beautiful and touching music I've come across recently and congrats for getting the top score, LieLow!
10/10
Nekov: Fripp & Eno - Evening Star
This music sounds pretty magical and unique! The keyboard patches are cool and I like how the guitar sounds like violin. It's hard to imagine this was recorded in the 70s, the production makes it feel timeless. The song is pretty long and a bit repetitive, but just like the piece Onno sent, this is music that makes you forget time and place, not a snoozefest.
8.5/10
Lolzeez: Explosions in the Sky - Your Hand in Mine
I like the title, because Paradise Lost have a song with the same name :P But seriously, this is great post-rock! The song is driven by lovely clean guitars and there's some neat drumming in a few sections. I love the atmosphere and the structure of this tune!
9.5/10
MoraWintersoul: Taranis - Dominion
The YT description says this is epic folk/black metal, but luckily there are no cheesy medieval dance melodies or a strong BM vibe that would turn me off. Instead, here's a neat, epic mid-tempo metal song with some pleasant atmospheric sections here and there. The vocals are alright and the song is well-constructed - no complaints!
8/10
WindMaster: *shels - Journey to the Plains
WindMaster continues with post-metal! But does *shels appeal to me as much as ISIS did in the last round? Unfortunately the answer is no, but I like the exotic instrumentation and the song has its cool moments. Still, I feel like it's missing something... maybe some section(s) with clean guitars could be nice? It worked really well in the ISIS song.
7.5/10
Current ranking:
Lolzeez - 41.5
Nekov - 41
LieLowTheWantedMan - 40
MoraWintersoul - 38.5
Onno - 38.5
WindMaster - 37.5
Scorpion - 37
Dark Castle - 35
Lolzeez has managed to edge out Nekov by half a point and LLTWM and Onno have climbed up thanks to the strong songs they sent this time.
ROUND 6: Open
I didn't make the first round open like most people do, because I wanted you to get some kind of idea of my taste in music first. It may still be hard to figure out though :lol This is your only chance to send something with no restrictions, so try your best! You'll once again have 48 hours to send.
At this point it's also time to introduce a bonus point system (stolen from Mr. Wasteland - thanks for the idea, Marco! :D) - if the person in the last place (currently Dark Castle) manages to send the best song in some round, I'll grant them a bonus point to even things out a bit and give some extra motivation! :) I originally had some ideas for ways of giving bonus points in specific rounds, but I realized that they would probably go to those who are doing well anyway, so I scrapped the system.
-
Damn. I will try to send later tonight.
-
Glad you liked it! His music has been used in some films and commercials, so yeah, it could have been in some film :P
-
I wasn't sure if that was going to work or not
Sent for next round
-
Damn. I will try to send later tonight.
Some electro-postdubprog perhaps?
-
Perhaps...
-
Even though I passed Nekov,I gotta admit, that Fripp & Eno album is one of the best ambient albums I've ever heard.
Oh and I was thinking of sending Hammock too. Especially the song "Together Alone" since it's one of the songs that made me shed man/teen tears. :blush
Damn. I will try to send later tonight.
Some electro-postdubprog perhaps?
Don't send any Post Avan Jazzcore. That's my job. :lol
-
Thinking on what to send, wondering if I should send a new band to my ears that I really enjoy, or if I should send something metal.
Choices.
-
Yay, top score! :D
I like lurking in other people's roulettes from time to time. And reading the results for round two I have to thank Dark Castle for submitting that CHVRCHES song. Reading the write-up made me want to listen and man, it was sonically wonderful. Eargasm. Thank you.
:)
CHVRCHES is great! The album is a big recommendation. :tup
-
Glad you liked it! His music has been used in some films and commercials, so yeah, it could have been in some film :P
Ludovico Einaudi is incredible! I didn't realize there were other fans here. :tup :tup

Ludovico Einaudi is incredible! I didn't realize there were other fans here. :tup :tup
:tup I really want to go to one of his concerts but they get sold out so quickly :/
-
Well, now I have to listen to the Hammock song. Hopefully I can appreciate even without the rain falling outside.
And YAY for Ludovico Einaudi, he's a great great composer and grandson of one of the earliest (and greatest) Presidents of Italy! Most of his production is just beautiful, I love listening to him. :azn:
-
Well, now I have to listen to the Hammock song. Hopefully I can appreciate even without the rain falling outside.
It actually reminds me a bit of the title-track of KevMo's Shine, I'm sure you'll like it!
-
Has everyone sent yet?
-
Not me! I'll think of something.
-
I need to write a response paper for school, so the results will come later tomorrow. But hey, the progression of the roulette has been pretty fast up until now, so I hope it's ok :)
-
Edit:SEEEENT
-
I don't think I did it right so please forgive me haha.
EDIT: oh i missed the part about where its a competition... oops haha IN LATE FOR FUNZIES
-
Yeah, you're a bit late to the party and I wouldn't have taken in more than 8 participants anyway :lol I appreciate your interest though :)
Only Scorp has yet to send and I've listened to all the songs I've received so far twice, but I've spent 90% of the day at the computer trying to work on the paper I mentioned earlier, so I need a break... I promise I'll post the results tomorrow!
-
Either way, should listen to them because they're awesome. :metal
-
Alright, I will :D

ROUND 6 RESULTS
Nekov: The Dear Hunter - 1878
I had seen this band mentioned so often at DTF that I thought this would be standard prog metal, but I was wrong :lol Instead of heaviness I can hear a combination of indie and 70s stuff. The verses are good, but unfortunately the chorus gets on my nerves with its repetitiveness and the whiny falsetto vocals. Too bad, because I appreciate the instrumental section and the great organ playing.
7/10
Dark Castle: Man Man - Head On (Hold On to Your Heart)
I find it fitting that the music video is black-and-white, because the song has a kind of retro feeling. The chorus is really catchy and I could see this song becoming a hit! The little keyboard solo is cool and I like the strings. I find this kind of music unique and refreshing :)
9/10
MoraWintersoul: Leprous - Restless
Leprous is a familiar name (I think they supported Amorphis on one tour)... The alt rock vibe of the verses is cool and I like the guitar playing there. The heavier bits are neat as well and I like how the song manages to pack enough contrasts into 3½ minutes.
8/10
Onno: Leprous - Echo
Cool that I got to experience both the straightforward and the epic side of Leprous in this round - Echo is 9½ minutes long. The song has many great bits, but I think it could've benefited from being trimmed down a little bit. The singer also overuses the falsetto IMO...
7.5/10
WindMaster: The Ocean - Demersal: Cognitive Dissonance
The intro is really cool and the drums and guitars sound great! Unfortunately the song goes downhill when the vocals start. Somehow the screaming makes the song sound more monotonous than it actually is... Luckily the doomy part towards the end is great, so the song ends on a high note.
6.5/10
LieLowTheWantedMan: Unwound - Terminus
Um... I don't know what to say about this song. It's pretty unique and there are interesting sections for sure, but for some reason it didn't properly click with me. Maybe it's the production, the minimalistic vocal approach or something... dunno. I have to say I love the last 2½ minutes though!
6/10
Lolzeez: Coheed and Cambria - Domino the Destitute
C&C is another band whose existence I've been aware of but never listened to. The vocalist has a pretty unique voice that I disliked on the first listen, but I warmed up to it a little after that, although I still don't love it. The song itself sounds metalish, but not that heavy, which I find interesting. This isn't exactly a hit song, but has enough catchy bits and is pretty enjoyable.
8.5/10
Scorpion: Buckethead - Hills of Eternity
You said pretty much everyone you've sent this song to has loved it - luckily for you I'm no exception! I love the laidback feel of the song, there are some lovely melodies and even suspended chords, which I'm a sucker for :D The little soloing is really tasteful and the subtle sound effects are cool. I wouldn't have expected music like this from Buckethead knowing what he looks like and having heard the shreddy song from some Guitar Hero game my friend had years ago! I was thinking I'd rate this 9.5, but it hit me in the right spot, so I have to give a 10 - congrats!
10/10
Current ranking:
Lolzeez - 50
Nekov - 48
Scorpion - 47
MoraWintersoul - 46.5
LieLowTheWantedMan - 46
Onno - 46
WindMaster - 44
Dark Castle - 44
Scorp jumps straight to the 3rd place and Lolz is more clearly in the lead now.
ROUND 7: New
Most of the music I discover tends to be from the 90s, or at least from the previous decade. I think I may be missing out on some new stuff, so I ask you to send songs from albums that have been released in the 2010s. The deadline for submissions is, once again, 48 hours from now.
Additionally, I'll listen to the song Scrub206 sent me and post my impressions at some point :D
-
Nice! Will think of something to send shortly, I have a few songs that are potential candidates, will send during the day.
-
Yay, I'm glad you enjoyed the song I sent!

No,I just made it clear that it's gonna be me who's gonna win this.
You may win this if I win your roulette
On a serious note Onno, Nekov and DC have sent their songs and I've already given them a couple of listens. I'm waiting for the rest of the submissions, but in the meantime these are my thoughts on the additional song I received:
Scrub206: Jolly - Dust Nation Bleak
The opening riff doesn't really grab me, but the verses are cool and the chorus is catchy despite being pretty repetitive. The mellow interlude is neat as well and I like the little proggy elements. Maybe this isn't the most unique kind of metal nowadays, but I enjoy it nevertheless!
-
Anyways,I checked out that CHVRCHES band and my god is this stuff catchy...
-
Results?
-
Haven't received anything from Scorp yet... I'll post the results tomorrow.

ROUND 7 RESULTS
Onno: The Omega Experiment - Furor
Eh... It might've been a better idea to send something by a band you had known for longer than one day :lol The song has a few cool moments, but I've mostly grown out of this kind of over-technical music and therefore the crazy sections get on my nerves. Shame, because I can see some potential here...
5.5/10
Nekov: Von Hertzen Brothers - Always Been Right
In Finnish music circles VHB have been compared to the legendary Kingston Wall, but judging by this song I wouldn't put them on the same line. The mandolin in the intro is neat, the keyboard solo and the talk box section are cool and the storytelling in the lyrics is nice, but the vibe of the song is a bit too cheerful for me and I'm not crazy about the singer's voice.
7/10
Dark Castle: Fallujah - The Dead Sea
I have mixed feelings... This song has some good melodies and I like the mellow interlude a lot, but the heaviest parts with the machine gun drumming are a bit too brutal and generic for my taste. Worth listening nevertheless and the good parts are really good!
6.5/10
MoraWintersoul: Enochian Theory - This Aching Isolation
Gorgeous clean guitars, string arrangements (or is that just a keyboard?) that aren't too bombastic, emotional vocals and a powerful chorus - what's there not to like? :) This song has a "Riverside meets Anathema and says hi to Porcupine Tree" vibe, but doesn't sound like a rip-off or unoriginal. On the top of that the length of the song is suitable and effective, not dragging on but not ending too quickly either. To quote my comment on the Pure Reason Revolution song Nekov sent earlier in the roulette:
Not a perfect song, but pretty close! :hefdaddy
9.5/10
WindMaster: Ne Obliviscaris - As Icicles Fall
Another great song! There's a lot of atmosphere, both the clean and harsh vocals are good and the use of violin is interesting. Maybe this song could've been just a little bit shorter, but it's still impressive. I have a feeling this band could become big in the metal scene!
9/10
Lolzeez: Deafheaven - Dream House
Major key black metal? Ok... The screaming is pretty monotonous and the drummer wouldn't have to play a blast-beat for 4 minutes. The quiet bit in the middle is nice, but apart from that I can't see anything great in this song, so your prediction that I'd hate this wasn't totally off :lol
5/10
LieLowTheWantedMan: The Drones - I See Seaweed
The disturbing intro sounds pretty evil and I like it, but the vocalist's half-talking approach kind of turns me off. The structure of the song is kind of weird, but there's some cool guitar work here and there.
6/10
Scorpion: Ne Obliviscaris - Forget Not
Scorp was a bad boy and broke the time limit rule by sending a 12-minute song, but I didn't want to delay the results and disappoint you guys so I swallowed my pride and listened to the song. I'm glad I did, because it's awesome! The vocals could come in a bit earlier than the 6-minute mark, but the build-up is great and the contrasts work. I actually liked this song a bit more than the one WindMaster sent, but due to you breaking the rule I feel obliged to rate it a bit lower - sorry!
8.5/10
Current ranking:
MoraWintersoul - 56
Scorpion - 55.5
Lolzeez - 55
Nekov - 55
WindMaster - 53
LieLowTheWantedMan - 52
Onno - 51.5
Dark Castle - 50.5
The ghost takes the lead, but the scorpion is right behind her and Lolz and Nekov may also return to the top. Exciting, isn't it?
(sorry if some write-ups were short, I was in a hurry!)
ROUND 8: Funeral
The roulette is getting closer to the end and soon it'll be time to say goodbye :( Because of that and my love for dark music I want to hear something overwhelmingly sad and beautiful - your song doesn't specifically need to be about death, but I want the music to have a melancholic funeral vibe. This time I give you 3 days to send your submissions, because I need to work on a text analysis and Friday will be a busy day for me for other reasons.
-
Well, VHB have less cheerful stuff for you to check. I wish I'd known you're not a fan of happy music.
-
God damnit. I knew you wouldn't like it too much. But trust me,you should re-listen in like couple years. You will regret only giving it a 5 out of 10.
I still have so many bands up my sleeve so I feel like I still might have a chance. Also, thumbs up for Ne Obliviscaris. (Though I feel like you should have given Forget Not a perfect score because it's so damn good.)
-
Oh well.
-
Can't agree that Fallujah's sound is generic, but at least it did better than Lolzeez(but I love Deafheaven so I feel for you man)
-

It'll prob make my top 20 albums if it still holds up.

I definitely wouldn't even call it the best album of the decade by a long shot, but it'll be somewhere in my Top 50 someday, probably 40's.
-
God damnit. I knew you wouldn't like it too much. But trust me,you should re-listen in like couple years. You will regret only giving it a 5 out of 10.
Based on my tastes in the past few years I can't see my opinion changing a lot :-X
Can't agree that Fallujah's sound is generic
I didn't say the whole song was generic, just the brutal bits. On the other hand, I'm pretty unfamiliar with not-so-melodic extreme metal so I may not be the right person to say that :lol
-
That Deafheaven was just lolzworthy. But I can understand that appeal.
-
I was saving Forget Not for the funeral round >:(
This is one of my fave albums, btw. Not just of 2012 but in general. So that's a quite quite lovely band.
-
I was going to send one of their other songs but most were over 10 mins. :lol
Glad you liked it, the other songs on that album are even better, so I suggest checking them out further.
-
I was saving Forget Not for the funeral round >:(
I would've told you to resend 'cause you're not in Ecuador :D
-

I would've slapped you all the way from Serbia :lol
what's it with progsters and the ten minute rule, expose yourself to Lolzy's random epic song streaks like the rest of us!
-
You should be glad that the roulette is progressing (pun intended) at this pace and I'm not whining about songs that include unnecessary fluff all the time :P Hell, even some 5-minute songs I've received haven't managed to click after 3 or 4 listens :lol
-
Can't agree that Fallujah's sound is generic, but at least it did better than Lolzeez(but I love Deafheaven so I feel for you man)

Actually,I wouldn't too. Weather Systems still exists.
-
You won't be waiting for me on this one, as I have sent. It's probably the saddest, most funeral-y song that I know (excluding those that Ville already knows), so I'm hoping for a high score. :)
-
Just have to chime in and make a remark. Funeral != sad.
Some songs are fitting for funerals because the song carries some relevance to the ceremony for one reason or another, and the song itself doesn't have to be sad. It's about the context of the song in relationship to the individual, that's what can make it special.
And then there's songs like In My Life by The Beatles that I could see being played on my funeral, which lyrically is reminiscent but not necessarily sad. A reflection and overview of what has been can be just as much "funeral" as something melancholy.
I feel like I'm rambling here, but whatever.
-
True, but since ? does equate a melancholic, somber feeling with funeral-y-ness and I do want to score highly, that's what I went with. :P
-
Yeah, maybe it was a mistake to call the theme that way, but the point is that I want something extremely sad.
-
I cant be the only one who thought of Arcade Fire... Right?
-
I sent. This round is the one that will kill all my chances of winning
-
I'm trying so hard not to send something that was sent in my own roulette. :lol
I'm sorry but I think I might send it.
-
Still waiting for Lolzy, LieLow and WM...
-
sent.
-
C'mon guys!
-
Everyone has sent, but I haven't had time to listen to one of the submissions yet. Results later today!
-
:corn
-
Sorry about the delay, I had other things to do (yes, it's possible :omg:) and on the top of that the quality of the songs was so consistent that it was hard to decide the scores. I actually had to give up my system of giving everyone a different rating, hopefully you're happy! The write-ups may once again be a tad short, but here we go:
ROUND 8 RESULTS
Scorpion: Pain of Salvation - Never Learn to Fly
POS is another name on the endless list of bands I've heard of but never really listened to before. Luckily this song left a good first impression! This is a lovely ballad with great melodies. It sounds kind of optimistic at times, but for the most part it's very melancholic. The short louder part with rough vocals sticks out and at first I thought it disrupts the flow, but I got used to it on the next listens.
9.5/10
Nekov: Nitrous Gas - Frightened Rabbit
You said you don't listen to a lot of melancholic music and it's true that this isn't the most miserable song out there :lol That said, I do enjoy the song. I like the clean guitars and there are some neat vocal harmonies. This tune is pretty short and doesn't exactly match my idea of the theme, but giving less than 7 points feels wrong, so I'll go easy on you :)
7/10
Dark Castle: Baroness - Stretchmarker
Nice little instrumental! You said you'd like this to be played at your funeral and I could see it fitting that environment. The guitar playing is beautiful and the layering works really well. Not much else to say, I really like this!
9/10
MoraWintersoul: Pain of Salvation - Lilium Cruentus
The second POS song I received and the first live clip anyone has sent in this roulette (IIRC). The melodies are good and the orchestra is used very tastefully, but I don't like the yelling vocals at 2:17-2:33 too much, which drags the song down a little bit. That's just a little complaint though! On a side note, now I can see why the girls at DTF like Gildenlöw so much :D
8/10
Onno: Arthur Rubinstein - Chopin Sonata No. 2 in B Flat Minor, Op 35 (III Marche funebre)
Classical music... nice! At 9 minutes' length this piece is pretty long, but manages to stay interesting for the most part. I could pick this for my funeral if any popular music isn't allowed :D
8/10
Lolzeez: Gregor Samsa - Even Numbers
This song is 10:06 at length, but I didn't want to be a petty moron so I didn't ask Lolz to resend :lol Unfortunately this song drags on a bit more than Onno's submission so I have to rate it lower, but I do like the atmosphere and the female vocals.
7.5/10
LieLowTheWantedMan: Pain of Salvation - Iter Impius
POS are clearly great funeral music, eh? :lol The piano intro is awesome and I love the flute. The build-up is well done, Gildenlöw's vox are pretty good and the climax and the ending is climactic.
8.5/10
WindMaster: Moving Mountains - Apsides
This seems to be some kind of alt rock or indie... The song has a neat atmosphere and I like the nostalgic-sounding keyboards. I was waiting for a proper climax that never arrived, but this is still far from a letdown.
8.5/10
Current ranking:
Scorpion - 65
MoraWintersoul - 64
Lolzeez - 62.5
Nekov - 62
WindMaster - 61.5
LieLowTheWantedMan - 60.5
Onno - 59.5
Dark Castle - 59.5
ROUND 9: Encore
I want moar! This is officially the final round and I want to end the roulette on a high note, so here's a little twist: I've picked the artists for you! I'd like to hear more from the bands you people received (some of) your highest scores with, so here's the list:
Dark Castle: CHVRCHES
LieLowTheWantedMan: Hammock
Lolzeez: Talk Talk
MoraWintersoul: Enochian Theory
Nekov: Pure Reason Revolution
Onno: Mark Knopfler
Scorpion: Buckethead
WindMaster: ISIS
On the top of that, I've put the time limit rule to rest, which means that you can send a song as long as you want. But think carefully before sending a huge epic! Another thing worth pointing out is that your songs will be rated out of 20, which means that the standings may still change quite a lot! You have 4 days to think carefully and choose a song to send.
-
Cool. :)
-
Cool. :)
Just send Together Alone and win this.
Oh and fuck yes. It's gonna take me some thinking to pick a favorite Talk Talk song,so I'll take my time. :tup
-
Great that you liked PoS! You should definitely check them out further, I'd say either start with TPE or RL, but really, you can't go wrong with any of the first four albums.
I don't really like that you have picked a band for me, to be honest, but it's your roulette. :mehlin Let's see if I can repeat my success of my first Buckethead submission.
-
On a side note, now I can see why the girls at DTF like Gildenlöw so much :D
Oh, no shit :lol
omg ET has so many great tunes I need to think carefully :tup

Good luck picking one song,he has like 50 albums. :lol
No seriously, what are his best 5 albums? I'd love to check some material out but there's just too much.
-
I'm not sure, because I haven't listened to all of his albums - like you said, he has a lot, but those that I dig most are, in no order:
- Colma
- Population Override
- Inbred Mountain
- Spinal Clock
- Monsters and Robots
- Bucketheadland 2
- Shadows Between the Sky
-
Can't wait to send you some more ISIS!
-
I don't really like that you have picked a band for me, to be honest, but it's your roulette. :mehlin
Yes, it is and my word is your command  I wanted to save you guys from the trouble and in most cases I knew exactly what bands I wanted to hear more of.
-
Glad you liked it! Cool theme for the last round, I'll try to think of something ASAP.
-
Cool. :)
Just send Together Alone and win this.
I'll consider it. ;) There's quite a few good Hammock tunes I could send.

hang hurry up? I'll travel to Helsinki tomorrow and it would be nice for everyone if I could post the results before that.

ROUND 9 RESULTS:
Lolzeez: Talk Talk - The Rainbow
The intro is pretty long and I think the full band should come in earlier, but when that finally happens the song gets good. The mellow vibe is relaxing and there's some great keyboard work on piano and organ. Unfortunately the guitar(?) sounds distractingly ear-splitting at times (see 7:15) and as I said the intro feels unnecessarily long, which prevents me from giving any more points.
15/20
LieLowTheWantedMan: Hammock - Raising Your Voice... Trying to Stop an Echo
Wow, I had no idea post-rock could be this catchy and accessible! This song has a wonderful atmosphere that reminds me a bit of dream pop and shoegazing like Slowdive, but with much clearer production. I find this quite different from the previous Hammock song you sent me, but that's not a bad thing!
19.5/20
MoraWintersoul: Enochian Theory - Nisi credideritis, Non intelligetis
Alright, this song is heavier than the previous ET tune I got from you! The atmosphere is enjoyable, the strings are once again used tastefully and there are some powerful sections. I didn't expect the growls at the end though! One funny thing I noticed is that the delay-laden clean guitars in the second verse remind me of the Leprous song you sent me :D
17/20
Dark Castle: CHVRCHES - Lungs
This song may be a bit closer to modern pop than Gun, having lots of effects. I don't like this tune as much, but the chorus is catchy and the harmonies are awesome. I would've ditched the male vocals though :lol
16/20
Nekov: Pure Reason Revolution: The Twyncyn / Trembilin Willows
I like the way the vocal melody follows the guitar in the first verse! The strings give a kind of dramatic and cinematic feel, but fit the song. The heavier second half is the highlight for me, having a catchy chorus and some cool quick vocals that remind me of Tool.
18.5/20
Onno: Mark Knopfler - Redbud Tree
I enjoy the melancholic and stripped-down feel of this song and the little guitar solo is great. Not much else to say - short but sweet tune!
16.5/20
Scorpion: Buckethead - Shadows Between the Sky
This is like a perfect continuation of the previous Buckethead tune I received! I love the atmosphere :heart Whatever he does at 1:24 sounds really cool :D There are some quick runs on the acoustic guitar, but they fit the song and don't feel wanky at all.
19/20
WindMaster: ISIS - Hall of the Dead
The rhythmic riffing is cool and the parts with clean vocals are really great. 3:50 reminds me a bit of the bass groove under the solo in DT's The Looking Glass :D Maybe this song could've been shortened a little bit, because my attention was drifting away at times, but I still like it.
15.5/20
And now it's time for the final results! ARE YOU READY?! I'll reveal your scores and say something to all of you:
8. Dark Castle - 75.5
Your taste in metal is more extreme than mine and therefore a lot of the heavy stuff you sent wasn't exactly what I'm looking for. However, you truly shone in the non-metal territory (maybe with the exception of the RHCP song): I really liked the Man Man song and the Baroness instrumental and some other people (including a few of your fellow participants!) seemed to love CHVRCHES just like I did, so you deserve to be proud of yourself :tup
7. Onno - 76
You had a strong start, but something happened after that... You never managed to get 9.5 or 10 points, which may explain your position, but you sent the best Devin song I've ever heard and the (modern) classical music definitely stood out, so I'm happy you were in this roulette.
6. WindMaster - 77
Your scores were pretty inconsistent, but you stuck to your guns and there were a couple of hits, like Ne Obliviscaris and ISIS. You seem to know your post-rock/metal well :D
5. Lolzeez - 77.5
You were inconsistent as well, but most of the time you did quite well. Unfortunately that Deafheaven song was fatal for your success :lol Anyway, I know I'll get (and already got) some recommendations from you after this, so this is not (or shouldn't be) the end of the world.
4. LieLowTheWantedMan - 80
Some of the stuff you sent was a bit too out there for my taste, but you really nailed it with Hammock! You can be sure I'll check them out, perhaps Sweet Trip too - the song I got was really nice.
3. Nekov - 80.5
You sent some indie/happy stuff and that kind of music is outside my comfort zone, but considering that you're in the top 3 you can be happy. Pure Reason Revolution is one of my greatest discoveries in this roulette :) You didn't win, but when it comes to you vs Lolz, you had the last laugh :lol
2. MoraWintersoul - 81
You were familiar with my taste in music beforehand and that definitely played in your favor. You were also more consistent than your rivals, which helped you climb up when the guys who had been in the lead at first started to get some lower scores. Just like Lolz, I bet you'll give me some recommendations even after this roulette, and you can be sure I'll listen to them :D
1. Scorpion - 84
Congrats, you're the winner! I knew we have some common favorites, but after the first few rounds I wasn't sure whether you'd be a potential winner. Luckily you truly stepped up and delivered after that! The trinity of Buckethead, Ne Obliviscaris and POS was very helpful for you :tup
A big thank you to everyone who participated in the roulette or followed this thread! :) I discovered some awesome music and everyone had their chance to shine at some point, which makes me happy. I'm kind of surprised this is over so quickly, but I had a lot of time for listening. Well, I got this out of the way before becoming too busy and those next in the waiting list must be happy as well :D
