THE URL TO THE LIVE CHAT IS : https://youtu.be/sx8cLlXnHpA
Do you have a burning question you have always wanted to ask the members of Dream Theater? This is your chance!
We at www.dreamtheaterforums.org in conjunction with RoadRunner Records are pleased to host a live, online chat with Dream Theater Tuesday September 24, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. Eastern. Here is how it will work:
Post your questions in this thread, or send them to bosk1 via private message on this forum. Please submit no more than two questions per person. We will vet the questions to eliminate (1) questions that are duplicative and (2) questions that are not appropriate. Of course, the band will have final say as to which questions they answer. Obviously, there will not be time for them to answer everything. If we get overwhelmed with questions at the last minute, there is a good chance your questions may not be submitted to the band, so get your questions in early.
At 2:45 p.m. on September 24th, we will post a link to a YouTube channel where you will get to watch and listen to the band members answer your questions live via Google Hangouts On Air. The stream will go live at 3:00pm or shortly thereafter. For those who cannot make it online at that time, don’t worry—the video will remain up for you to watch at your leisure.
The reasons for this format are simple: We wanted to try to provide a way for you to interact directly with the band, but needed to find a way to keep it orderly for both the fans and the band without several hundred people all screaming for the band’s attention at the same time.
So ask yourself what you have always wanted to know, bring your best questions, and log in and chat with DT. Oh, and don’t forget to pick up a copy of the new album. See you on the 24th!
-
What are some of your favorite books?
-
Have you considered writing another double album?
-
Is the band aware that many fans criticise that sound quality of their recent albums? Do they intend to change something in the future (like to hire Jens Bogren)?
EDIT: If this question is asked, clarify that it isn't about subjective songwriting criticism but just about technical criticism regarding the mastering of their albums. This can be easily confused.
-
This question is directed specifically for JP:
Did you take a different approach at choosing guitar tunings for this album? I noticed that False Awakening has a low G and Illumination theory is a low A tuning which have rarely been heard before in DT's music. Besides those, a lot of seven-string seemed to have been used, whether in the heavy songs The Enemy Inside and Enigma Machine, but even the heartfelt The Bigger Picture has it, which seems to give it an extra level of depth to the song.
-
And thus the harpist uncovered his string. Awesome :3
Looking forward to this, even though I won't be able to attend the chat as I will be graduating that very day :D
-
No more than two? Here's two: (and SPOILER ALERT I suppose)
What song(s) are you most looking forward to playing live?
How are you going to bring the strings section in Illumination Theory to a live environment?
-
And thus the harpist uncovered his string. Awesome :3
Looking forward to this, even though I won't be able to attend the chat as I will be graduating that very day :D
Congrats! Well, you can still submit questions and view the chat later.
-
Was it challenging to write songs with good melodic hooks and dynamics, while also achieving the heavy wall-of-sound feel that you wanted?
-
Would you give us some idea of what to expect on the evening with tour. Orchestra, song line up, epics vs. shorter songs ?
-

Thanks bosk! I will think carefully about my question. I wanna give an important input and show we are not your average flock of fans :D
-
Would you give us some idea of what to expect on the evening with tour.
I would assume the answer is: Chocolate cake with purchase of general admission ticket! Upgrade to balcony for free glass of milk! :panicattack:
-
1. Why have the most recent DT albums fallen victim to the Loudness Wars and been mastered incredibly hot with little dynamics?
2. What was each of your reactions after you were able to listen to your new album all the way through?
-
Very excited that this is going ahead! :caffeine:
-

Instead of the usual picks and drum heads the band will be throwing chocolate cake at the audience at the endshow. Attenders are warned.

In the vein of what me7 posted and inspired by something I said in another thread:
How does the band deal with negative and at times harsh criticisms of their work, particularly on the Internet?
I'll post a second one if I think of a good one.
-
First off: Thanks Bosk! This is incredible. We appreciate you helping to make this happen!
What is everyone's favorite song on the album?
-

You have to draw a line between "DT's work" and the work of the mixing and mastering engineers they/Roadrunner hire. I don't mean to criticise DT, but the way the recorded material is treated by other people after it leaves DT's hands.
-
This is going to be... :squee:
1. Are you ever going to release any more "official bootlegs" again? Specifically, anything live from the Black Clouds tour and any "behind the scenes" stuff would be amazing, as would more footage of the drummer auditions!
2. Can you please share with us either the most interesting or funniest thing that happened to you on the road?
-
Very excited that this is going ahead! :caffeine:
Very excited that we can finally let the cat out of the bag! :lol
-
I'm surprised the cat can still breathe. He was in that bag a LONG time. :lol

:lol Yes, that's true!
-
Since (some of) the bandmembers might lurk in this thread in concordance with the upcoming I want to congratulate you on this new effort. I'm digging the new album a lot and I think you've unlocked a new level of musicianship and songwriting with this one. I pose the following questions:
1) When touring Europe would you consider one day playing a concert in one of the Baltic states? I will be crossing the Gulf of Finland to see your concert in Helsinki but nothing would please me more than seeing you one day in my home country Estonia (the northern one of the Baltics), which is slowly becoming more oriented to metal and progressive music with bands like X-Panda.
2) Do you find it likely that there will be more guest musicians and/or collaborations (Eren Basbug on this one) on future albums?
-
What TV shows do the band members currently follow/watch ? What are their favorite shows of past?
Thanks for doing this!
-
Will there be a Making of DT 12 dvd release?
(not sure if the boxset has a 30 min feature on this)
-
Very cool, thank you for setting up such a great opportunity. I'll come up with a couple questions shortly.
-
HOLY CRAP AWESOME. DTF is simply bad ass. :metal
1. To JP- Would you care to explain the line "Selfless are the righteous, burden me, lead me like a lamb to the slaughter" ? I would really like to know if my speculation is correct :)
2. Would Mangini and Rudess start singing backup at DT shows? They both have great voices and sing on-pitch (Maybe JMX also has a great singing voice, but I've never heard it). I also remember hearing that Jordan has perfect pitch and of course Mangini is a master at music theory, it seems they'd be great at harmony.
-
1: Is the "easter egg" ever going to be played live?
2: Is "Raw Dog" ever going to be played live?
-
Question for JP: At what point in the songwriting process do you decide to use an alternate tuning? Has any song had a change of key signature to accommodate a certain tuning or vice versa?
-
Question for JP: what progress have you made on your next solo album?
-

I can answer that for you: JR said he prefers to focus just on playing, and MM said he tried once for another band/gig/or maybe even class and that it wasn't good.
1. You probably don't know the setlists for the tour yet, but are there any songs that are "off limits" or highly improbable to be played at this tour? Specifically, I mean tracks that aren't released on studio albums, or songs with music by ex-members which you either haven't played in a while (Anna Lee) or ever (Space-Dye Vest).
2. Do you ever read DTF.org threads? :corn:
-

That's a really cool question. I think they actually DO know the setlist by now, or at least have a pretty good idea. But I'd also be interested in knowing now how they feel about certain songs.
-
I have this daydream where Mangini is shouting out those follow up lines in The Shattered Fortress and it sounds like "https://vocaroo.com/i/s1bOSAdjo48V"

Just so you know, whenever you respond to something I wrote, this is my face:

(goes for several other users of the board, but I'm too shy to tell them all :lol)
Also, they might know the setlists? Quick someone ask about the setlist :neverusethis:

You may want to think to another question, Mili. I just asked James through his twitter your same question and that's what he said:
"we definitely love the obscure and less played songs, but this time we are really focused on presenting this big assestment and undertaking that is our self titled album. this is why we decided that both our first and our second set will be entirely taken by our latest effort, that will be played twice. The encoreS, however, might be Constant Motion"
Of course,
if you needed this text to understand it's fake you really need a brain-check :-D
-
To JP: What makes a guitar solo a guitar solo to you? Because you said in an interview that there's no guitar solo on Along for the Ride, whereas it's always felt like one to me. Where do you draw the line between solo and just a guitar melody?
-
I don't quite have a question (yet), but I'd just like to say how cool I think it is that DT is doing this. This release cycle has been chock-full of awesome stuff like this (in-studio videos, early streams of the singles and the entire album on surprisingly commercial sites, artwork updates each weekend). The guys in DT and the people at :soon: deserve a big hand for doing all that in addition to releasing a decidedly kick ass album.
-
1. is the Easter Egg on "Dream Theater" something you just improvised and thought it would be cool to share it with us or is it a little anticipation of something bigger? An EP maybe?
2. is MM a human being? :neverusethis: Joking, will work on a second one though
Oh well don't really need to say this is a great idea. Thanks DTF staff, thanks RR and thanks Dream Theater. :metal
-
I also would like to ask if
1. Rudess And Mangini would start singing harmonies live since they are cool cats and have both sang before.
2. What do you do if you have to use the bathroom during a show? Not James since obviously he could go during an instrumental break.
-
1. JP, how has it been for you being the producer on the last 2 albums and do you have one producer you'd love to work with?
For the band:
2. When you play at festivals, who are the best bands that you've hung out with and what has been your favorite band to see live in that setting?
-
Wow this is a really cool experience. Thanks, bosk! My question- was there any song on DT12 that was mainly driven by MM, or was it essentially all JP + JR doing compositions? And is MM as fun to be around as he seems?
-
1) is there any truth to the notion that the drums on the new album are triggered?
2) are there songs from the DT catalog that you've all agreed will never be played live as a full band?
-
Question: Many times certain songs (such as Hollow Years, Solitary Shell, etc.) are lengthened live. Some times they contain jams, while others contain elements that sound written and rehearsed. If there was a song on a previous album that you would like to slightly "rewrite" or change (whether on the original studio record or live), which particular song would it be?
-
What is your favorite thing about your fanbase?
What are your thoughts on how music has evolved during your lifetime?
-
Light one: is there something (better if positive!) you've never take the opportunity to say to one, or more, of your bandmates? If there is, this is the moment!
More serious one: when this amazing ride will come to an end (hopefully as late as possible) what will you think your band will have meant to music history? (What will be his legacy?)
Oh, and of course:
Where did we come from?
Why are we here?
Where do we go when we die?
:)
Thanks DTF btw!
-
1. What is the easter egg all about? A lot of people here have the same question too
2. What is it like to be gods?
-
1. JP, are there any guitar solos in DT's catalog you aren't necessarily happy with how they came out? or are there any you don't enjoy playing anymore?
2. You've recorded albums at Beartracks right? And Jay Beckenstein was in Spyra Gyra right?
-
1. Mike, what is your favorite brand of cigar? Do you prefer mild, medium, or full-bodied cigars?
2. Mike, if, on the upcoming North American tour, you guys play anywhere near me (North Carolina), could we smoke cigars together? I am sure it would be a life highlight for the both of us.
-
1. What are some specific parts of the new album that are especially influenced by Mangini's writing style?
2. For JR: What is your favorite type of keyboard sound to play on? (piano, organ, lead, etc.)
-

2. Mike, if, on the upcoming North American tour, you guys play anywhere near me (North Carolina), could we smoke cigars together? I am sure it would be a life highlight for the both of us.
:rollin
-
1. Can you share any funny stories of silly onstage moments?
2. "A Change of Seasons" vs. "Octavarium" vs. "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence"? (the songs, not the albums)
Bonus question: Blastoise vs Bowser?
-
2. You've recorded albums at Beartracks right? And Jay Beckenstein was in Spyra Gyra right?
FUCKING WIN :lol :lol
-
Would you be willing to ever do a piece strictly for a string section/classical ensemble?
-

Chris Farley is alive!!!

:metal
-
1. Is there any chance of you guys doing something special for the 20th anniversary of Awake or for the 15th anniversary of Scenes from a Memory (like devoting some time to playing some of those albums' songs) next year on tour?
2. During the ADTOE tour, I do not recall any Falling into Infinity songs being played. Any chance we'll get to hear some songs (i.e "Trial of Tears," "Peruvian Skies," "Lines in the Sand") for the next tour?
-
Lol hef...
Thanks to all involved for this incredible opportunity for the band to interact with it's most dedicated and neurotic fanbase!!!
My question...
In the Boston song "More than a Feeling" there is the line ,"When I'm tired and thinking cold, I hide in my music, forget the day...." Now I know I'm not the only DTFer who, in those hardest moments in life turn to your music to get us through(and it has on so many occasions, thank you). So I ask, who do the band members turn to in their hard moments, who's music do you hide in?
-
1. What bands/artists have you guys been listening to most in the past few years?
2. What is each member's least favorite DT song?
man these are some uninspired questions
-
1. What bands/artists have you guys been listening to most in the past few years?

man these are some uninspired questions
Careful, JR might make a Youtube video mocking them.
-
1. Is the band aware of how revered John Myung's lyrics are and does that put any pressure on him when writing them, or the band to dedicate a song(s) to his lyrics?
2. Just a reminder....St. Louis is that city in between Chicago and Kansas City that would make a great spot to swing by while on the way from one to the other.
3. Would you ever undertake recording a soundtrack for a Movie?
-
To the band.- What do you think of Mike Portnoy's post-Dream Theater projects? Even though Mike Mangini's now the definitive Dream Theater drummer, would you be interested in collaborating with him once again in any other project?
-
I really like some of these questions! I hope some of these questions that are maybe a little more touchy actually get answered!
-
1. As an aspiring lyricist, what are some of your processes for writing lyrics, and do you find that certain things help inspire the writer inside of you?To: DA Johns, and James.
I wish I could muster up more questions, but I feel like they're already somewhere here in the thread, or they're just kind of blurbs of fanboyism and such.
Congrats on the record guys, it's most wonderful, and blows me away on every listen! :tup
-
Wow, I never expected anything like this! :eek Some great questions have been asked already :tup
1. Have you been in any kind of touch with Kevin Moore in the recent years?
2. Which 2000s DT album are you least satisfied with?
-
2. During the ADTOE tour, I do not recall any Falling into Infinity songs being played. Any chance we'll get to hear some songs (i.e "Trial of Tears," "Peruvian Skies," "Lines in the Sand") for the next tour?
does this count? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdBeeph0aFM
but yes i'd like to hear others from FII
-
great work on this, Bosky :tup
-
Great! I must think of some questions then.
-
To all of the members :
- Does age affects your guys writing process ? Whether it is music writing or lyric writing process ?
- Since you guys are all musical genius (seriously, you guys are the ones), do you guys or one of you guys have any interest on making some kind of scientific research about how music affects human body ?
sorry for my bad english language :-[
-
Hey, DTF. I know the album stream is beyond awesome. But there is even more cool news coming very soon. SOON... :soon:
North American tour dates hopefully...
I'm 99% sure it's not that.
I'm guessing it's the JP Q&A that has been hinted at.
Pretty much called it.
1. Is there any chance of you guys doing something special for the 20th anniversary of Awake or for the 15th anniversary of Scenes from a Memory (like devoting some time to playing some of those albums' songs) next year on tour?
I asked this question re SFAM at the listening party I was at. They were all open to the idea. Awake, I have no idea, however.
Will edit this post with questions later.
-
1. If you had complete freedom of choice, what band would you most like to tour with that you have not already done so?
-
Will you use an external producer ever again?Don't you think that not having an external opinion keeps you in the safe zone and hurts your "progressiveness"?
Is there going to be an HDtracks release for the new album for those who don't want a very compressed sound?
-
First, thanks to all involved with making this happen, what a great opportunity. :tup
Question 1. What is the current status of Ytse Jam records and will we get any more releases soon?
Question 2. Will you please play "You Not Me" again, as I do like this track. I've got tickets for Manchester so this would be a good time.
And please thank the guys for producing such a great album.
-
I can answer some of these questions because there is a brand new JP/DT interview in Finnish magazine Soundi.
To JP: Do you have a favourite guitar solo out of all of DT's catalogue?
Another one shall be added when I have thought about it.
According to JP: "I could say Voices. The solo has rude attitude and cheerful whatever-feelings. It's nice to unleash sometimes that side of me."
Would you give us some idea of what to expect on the evening with tour.
Jp hinted in that interview that they COULD play one ENTIRE album on the evening with tour! :eek
I'm sorry if this not belong to here, I just wanted to say that these questions have been asked already. I'm still thinking my own questions.
-
Question for JP
From what I've heard of the new album at this point, alongside A Dramatic turn of Events - there seems to be a move away from down tuning and the use of Baritone tuned guitars.
Is that a concious decision or is it more just how the songs evolved?
What generally dictates the use of altered tunings? Is it to do with the key that a song is written in or is it a concious decision to give the song a bit more sonic depth?
-
Bosk..Nice job!! Your work is really appreciated.
Question 1. What is the current status of Ytse Jam records and will we get any more releases soon?
1. Is the band aware of how revered John Myung's lyrics are and does that put any pressure on him when writing them,
In the Boston song "More than a Feeling" there is the line ,"When I'm tired and thinking cold, I hide in my music, forget the day...." Now I know I'm not the only DTFer who, in those hardest moments in life turn to your music to get us through(and it has on so many occasions, thank you). So I ask, who do the band members turn to in their hard moments, who's music do you hide in?
These are great questions!! All must be asked!! Especially the Ytsejam status.
-
what are your musical guilty pleasures? (steve vai for example once said he adores mj's thriller)
what is the most impressive live show you' ve attended as audience after you got famous? (i remember seeing a video of JP giving an autograph to someone at the wall concert)
-
The questions I had were already asked.
Hey Bosk, to your cat in the bag analogy, there were breathing holes. I noted several of your references to this and thought to myself, "alright, what is this guy up to?" :lol
Great job setting this up! :tup What a treat for us.
-
what are your musical guilty pleasures? (steve vai for example once said he adores mj's thriller)
Now that's a question I'd like to see each of them answer! :tup
-
What kind of money are you guys making overall?
-
"This is not really a question about this time of your career, but many people shared a common interest in an answer and threads were had about this: who came up with the idea of the Learning To Live intro and outro?"
"The ADTOE tour was an absolute highlight of your live career in terms of performance, balance in the setlist and stage production. How do you plan to improve your game in that regards for this tour?"
-
1. Do you guys plan on doing another concept album?
2. I recall JP saying that DT writes music first, and then puts lyrics upon the finished instrumentals. I was wondering which songs were written the other way around? (Lyrics first, and then music).
-
On DT, John Myung is as aggressive and prominent as he's ever been. Was this a specific goal from a production standpoint, due to Rich Chycki's influence, or was John just playing that way this time around?
-
1. Now that your diabolical plan to leave your contemporary rock composing peers naked and curled up in the corner whimpering for their mommies is complete do you see yourselves moving on to solving world peace?
2. Or is Hans Zimmer and John Williams your next target?
-
Thanks for all the positive feedback, guys. I won't go into all the details behind what went into this, but I will say that I worked hard to set this up because I thought it would be a real treat for all of you guys, as well as being some really good fan-relations and promotion for the band. And while I don't want to get into all of the behind-the-scenes stuff, I will say this: When I first mentioned the idea to John Petrucci, he was very enthusiastic about it right from the getgo and very eager to connect with the fans on this level. He and the rest of the guys are looking forward to this.
Here are a couple of questions I have:
(1) There has been a VERY wide range of speculation about Mike Mangini's involvement in writing his drum parts on A Dramatic Turn Of Events, and a lot of taking short quotes out of context to try to construct arguments about just how much involvement Mike had. Opinions range the entire spectrum between (1) "John Petrucci programmed complete drum parts hit-for-hit, and Mike just played them as written" on one hand, to (2) "John programmed a very basic click and Mike then basically wrote everything from scratch to fit the time signatures." Can you guys put this to bed and explain how that played out?
(2) For John Myung: Is there any one member of the band that you find to be a particularly inspiring "writing partner" that really brings out your creativity? Does that change from album to album?
-
First reaction: :omg: YOU MEAN WE'LL GET TO ASK THEM THINGS???
Second reaction: :squee: OMG BEST DAY EVER!!
Third reaction: :panicattack: GOTTA THINK OF GOOD QUESTIONS
Last reaction: >:( :censored :censored :censored I'LL BE IN SCHOOL. WHY CLASSES, WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME??
I'll still have to think up some awesome questions and watch the video when I get home.
-
2. I recall JP saying that DT writes music first, and then puts lyrics upon the finished instrumentals. I was wondering which songs were written the other way around? (Lyrics first, and then music).
I think only Lifting Shadows Off A Dream counts as that, since it was a "poem and a few chords" when it first entered the studio, but the rest, no. Not even the Kevin Moore songs, and he was a little more into writing lyrics than the rest of them.
When I first mentioned the idea to John Petrucci, he was very enthusiastic about it right from the getgo and very eager to connect with the fans on this level.
Well of course he was. JP luuuuuurvez us. :heart but of course we love him more :lol
-
Last reaction: >:( :censored :censored :censored I'LL BE IN SCHOOL. WHY CLASSES, WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME??
I feel your pain. After all the work in getting this set, it unfortunately got scheduled on a day where I have an unavoidable scheduling conflict myself, so I won't be on either. :( But the cool thing is, you still get to submit your questions, and you can watch the video afterwards. Even though you won't be watching it live as it happens, you'll still get to see the band talking directly to the members of this forum. Pretty cool any way you slice it, IMO.
-
This is awesome Bosk. Thanks!
My 2 questions, both for JP.
1) Of all the EBMM's you own, which is your favorite and why?
2) I know you and MP touched on this during a DVD commentary, but was the idea ever explored with Sterling and the folks at EBMM to build a guitar with your Picasso design?
-

Yup, I will catch it after work. I assume it'll be on youtube by the time I get home?
-
Have not read through other questions to look for duplicates, but here we go:
1) On the two most recent albums (ADTOE & DT) it appears the band has moved to more concise solo sections in the songs, which is a departure from the previous albums. Has this been a deliberate change of direction for the band or are there other reasons for the changes?
2) Over the years you have integrated many influences in your music, what are some of the more diverse musical styles that you have found inspirational?
-
TAC: It is going to be streaming through YouTube as it happens, and then I believe it will be available to re-watch very shortly after it ends.
-
Cool, Thank you.
Now I gotta think of some questions! :lol
-
I'd be happy to let you borrow some of mine if you are in need.
-
Are you guys planning anything for the 20th-anniversary year of Awake in 2014 -- for example, a start-to-finish performance of the album or a one-time encore featuring a guest appearance by Kevin Moore? It might be a nice time to reach out to him again and rebuild that bridge now that MP is gone.
-
For JP: When you think back to when you were first starting out as a serious musician, do you feel you have accomplished all of the musical goals you had at that time?
For MM: Which of MP's parts/songs do you like the best & think are the most fun to play? Which ones made you stop and say "wow, this is a great part"?
-
Wow... one more massive reason for all of us to respect DT and the admins on this board; what an awesome opportunity!
1. How do you plan to work the Meet and Greet process for the Evening With format? If I recall correctly, the past M&Gs for Evening With sets, took place after the show (we, as a fan base, promise not to steal JLB's drink or eat his food).
One question is really all I have.
I would like to personally thank JP for "This is the Life" and JP/JR for "State of Grace"... two songs that helped immensely during the passing of my Father in late 2012 from a sudden and very rare form of cancer. I have heavenly peace from my father's testimony of Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord and the promises in the Word of God... but a great deal of earthly peace came from these two compositions.
-
Many fans think ADToE sonic qualities are not on par with previous DT albums, especially the drums and cymbals. Would you ever
consider re-mixing that album, like Rush did with Vapor Trails in an effort to make the listening experience more pleasurable?
Thanks
-
Everyone:
Are you going to play more songs from Awake during the tour? I've personally really been missing songs like Scarred and Lifting Shadows off a Dream live.
Did you know that the Enigma Machine sounds a lot like the Inspector Gadget theme?
-
we, as a fan base, promise not to steal JLB's drink or eat his food
is this a real thing that happened before :lol
-
I assume so... I'm referencing a portion of "Chaos in Motion" where JLB says whilst signing photos... "Fans Eat our Food... Steal Our Drinks...!"
-
Sweet Jesus I love him :lol
-
@Bosk, will we find out which questions are chosen before September 24 (of course, before the band makes their final decision on which questions to answer)?
-
@Bosk, will we find out which questions are chosen before September 24 (of course, before the band makes their final decision on which questions to answer)?
Probably not. We probably won't go through the list and pare it down until close to the chat. And then the moderator and the band may skip questions/cull the list as the chat goes on.

Okay :) No problem, it only makes me anticipate it even more! I know it has been said many times in this thread, but thank you again (and the other people responsible) for making this possible. One of the many reasons I love this community!
-
1) Now that we've heard the album, can you point out any specific riffs or sections of songs from it that came about during the ADTOE tour?
2) Are you going to use mostly static setlists on the upcoming tour, like you did with the ADTOE tour?
-
Were their moments when you finished a song or a section of a song in the studio and everyone said, "I can't wait to play this live!"?
If so, can you share with us what moment stood out the most?
-
Sweet Jesus I love him :lol
 Can't beat that dry Canadian wit... or that dry Canadian Ginger Ale!
You know... that is actually a good out-of-left-field question...
2: To JLB... has anyone ever stolen your drink/food during a Meet and Greet?
-

:blush
-
If you guys had seen/heard the midi that a certain dtf member had transcribed from a still shot of the in the studio video, what was your reaction to it?
-
@ Bosk1... So was that a non-verbal answer to my question? :lol
-
I so desperately want this one answered because it's a very relatable problem that many of us have had--albeit in different circumstances unless you've played onstage
Have any of the band members had the sudden urge to go to the bathroom while they were playing onstage? How do you deal with that
-
Clench up.
-
If you guys had seen/heard the midi that a certain dtf member had transcribed from a still shot of the in the studio video, what was your reaction to it?
Wait...what is it that you're referencing? It sounds funny.
-
JP, Do you like German Chocolate cake as well?
-
@ Bosk1... So was that a non-verbal answer to my question? :lol
IT'S NOT "STEALING" IF YOU DON'T GET CAUGHT!
:innocent:
-
In what ways, if any, has having 'Gini on board affected the way you go about songwriting?
-
The lyrics on this album have a very spiritual feel and mood. Was that intentional or just a by product of where the lyricist is spiritually as an individual at this stage of his life?
-
Question 2. Will you please play "You Not Me" again, as I do like this track. I've got tickets for Manchester so this would be a good time.
I second this question!
Bossk, thank you for facilitating this opportunity for the DTF community to connect directly with the band.
FOR JAMES: If asked by Major League Baseball, would James consider singing the Star Spangled Banner at a baseball game, and if so, what ball park would be his first choice?
-
1. Are your family members ever objective/critical/harsh when it comes to songs/albums? Eg. someone saying "mmmh... that song is not my cup of tea" or "that solo/section should've been longer/shorter/this or that? If so, how do you deal with this?
-
If you guys had seen/heard the midi that a certain dtf member had transcribed from a still shot of the in the studio video, what was your reaction to it?
:lol I actually asked JR about that a little while back, and he'd heard it (and I assume the rest of the band probably has too). I'd love to hear more about the band's reaction to that.
-

Well what did he think??
-
Excellent, thank you to the admins here at DTF! Now, my questions:
1. Has the band ever considered playing a show in Alaska, or will they (please) consider it now that I have asked? ;D
2. Do JR and MM have any desire to do either lyrics or vocals in future DT, and if not, why?
-
1. of the many newer metal/prog bands on the scene today, are there any that are making you guys take notice of them?
2. are there any bands or artists that you guys "fan-boy geek out on" when they release new material, like we all do when your stuff comes out?
-
What is your favorite thing about your fanbase?
What are your thoughts on how music has evolved during your lifetime career?
FTFY. Lifetime seems a bit vague, no?
-
Okay okay okay, I think I can come up with some questions now....
1. In the example of Illumination Theory, I read that you guys went into it planning on writing an epic. How do you know when you've written a piece that is worthy of the title? Do you have a moment where you get chills listening to something? I'm curious to hear how it affects you.
2. Is there a particular song you've written that has become a fan favorite that you wouldn't have expected to?
-
I so desperately want this one answered because it's a very relatable problem that many of us have had--albeit in different circumstances unless you've played onstage
Have any of the band members had the sudden urge to go to the bathroom while they were playing onstage? How do you deal with that
Come on this one is simple man. Petrucci said it before that he has a "data dump" and its exactly what it sounds like. ;)
-
I'm really surprised this isn't already asked:
1) Is there any possibilty for any member to join to our nice community and chat with us?
and other question:
2) I know that JP goes to the gym but is any other member going any sports? Or do they watch any sports?
3)WEHN U CME TO IDNONEISA??? DT 4EVAH!!
-
Consider this question: What are you willing to die for?
-
Consider this question: What are you willing to die for?
:lol Oh man, someone needs to ask JP this! Seriously.
-
What cake flavor are you planning on using for the next album ? (I am fine with chocolate so far :P)
Can you match the working titles with the real tracks ?
-
For JP: A few years ago, there was talk about an EBMM guitar with the working title "JP Stallion". Is that what turned out to be the JP13?
For the band: Are there any songs in your catalogue that makes you "time travel" to a specific time and place when hearing it? For example, whenever I listen to "This is the life", I'm being put right back to when I moved to Germany on an exchange year, and all the feelings I had back then come return when I hear the song.
-
I came up with a really good one for my second and final question:
2. This is for Jordan and Mike. Do you remember the first Dream Theater song or album you ever heard and what you thought when you heard it?
-
Been lurking here for years, figured this is as good a place as any for my first post!
1. For JP, have you experimented much with open tunings or thought about incorporating them into your future writing?
2. For the band, are there any songs in the not too distant past (ie post SFAM) that you wish you could go back and rework?
This is really cool guys, thanks for putting this on! :metal
-
I came up with a really good one for my second and final question:
2. This is for Jordan and Mike. Do you remember the first Dream Theater song or album you ever heard and what you thought when you heard it?
That's a pretty neat question!
-
I like that question too
-
1) Do you guys go out trying to write an 'epic' or does it just turn out that way during the process?
2) what made you all get into Prog rather than Rock/metal or even jazz music?
-
Do you ever think you'll branch out into other musical styles again?
-
Who first suggested the idea of self-titling the album and how difficult of a decision was it to actually pull the trigger and do it? To me, it's really brave of the band to self-title and basically say this is our greatest work yet. Was is a tough decision?
-
To Jordan (or the entire band): After listening to Illumination Theory I started thinking about how it's likely to be performed live. Will the string section be played by Jordan or will the original recording be played as a sample? The latter IS possible after all since you so cleverly put a non-melodic ambient section right before it and a "swooshing" sound right after it. Was this your way of ensuring that this beautiful recording could be used as a sample without the transitions coming off as unnatural in a live setting?
-
2) what made you all get into Prog rather than Rock/metal or even jazz music?
I don't understand half of this question. They ARE into rock/metal.
-
Maybe this has been asked but:
"Do you guys plan on playing False Awakening Suite live or play it as an intro tape?"
-
Consider this question: What are you willing to die for?
You just want them to say Zydar. ;)
-
Maybe this has been asked but:
"Do you guys plan on playing False Awakening Suite live or play it as an intro tape?"
They're going to play it as an intro tape.
-
JP, it really feels like you've hit a zenith with the production of Dream Theater. In the future if one of the other band members showed an interest would you relinquish the producer role to them?
-
Question for John Petrucci:
- You have been an endorser of Music Man for almost 15 years now, and Ibanez before that. Consider this question (pun intented):
If Music Man or Ibanez didn´t exist, are there any other guitar companies that you are a big fan of that you would have concidered? And, do you own any guitars from other companies that you really like?
-
Even though I have logged 2 questions, scrub the second one about You Not Me, as I have tonight received e-mail notification that even though I ordered my copy of the new CD direct from the DT website, I will not be receiving my copy on release day becaue "Unfortunately there has been a delay in delivery, but not to worry your order is on it's way."
Are the band aware there own record label can't get fans copies on release day.
I ordered the day the pre order appeared on the DT website.
To say I'm pissed is an understatement.
Any chance the band can comment?
-
Dang! I hope that doesn't happen to me. Hope they knock off the shipping cost for you. That's crazy especially if you ordered it the day it was posted. I just ordered from amazon two days ago and so far it still says it should be here on the release day (24th for me).
-
Any chance the band can comment?
Unlikely. That would be a question for the distribution company. I doubt the band knows anything at all about anything related to the preorders.
-
Let me think of a great, original question...
Is it often that you, the members of Dream Theater, find inspiration while listening to music from your own solo albums?
And another, for John Petrucci:
We now know that the lyrics of all but one song were written by you. Was there ever a time when you asked your fellow members if they might write lyrics to any of the songs, where they refused?
-
Consider this question: What are you willing to die for?
What are you willing to kill for? Oh yeah....salmon....nevermind.
-
Two songs associated with former keyboardists, Eve and Anna Lee, have been absent from setlists for a LOOOONNNNGGGG time. Any chance of either one (or both) making a return?
-
To all the members:
"Is there anything from your past you either regret doing or just laugh at. Whether it's a musical idea in a song, something you do on live DVD or even a haircut?"
-
To all the members. Do you see yourself touring like Rush is into their 60's?
(I hope so with the evening with as well!)
-
are you going to perform the full album live or just selected songs?
and another one
do you know the facebook page meme theater? it's really funny you should check it out.
-
Question for John Myung. Why did you stop contributing lyrics for a period and what made you get involved again after Mike Portnoy's departure. Was it simply to cover for the loss of Mike's lyrics or something else.
Question for the band. Are the setlists done yet? As it's the longer shows, would be great to hear Octavarium close one set and Illumination Theory close the other. Both such epic songs to finish on.
-
1. Is the band aware of how revered John Myung's lyrics are and does that put any pressure on him when writing them, or the band to dedicate a song(s) to his lyrics?
+1
2. Just a reminder....St. Louis is that city in between Chicago and Kansas City that would make a great spot to swing by while on the way from one to the other.
+2....where do you live? I'm in the CWE.
-
Some versions of this have already been asked, but:
1. Do you have any plans to further develop the "easter egg"/hidden track from Illumination Theory? Like making an entire song out of it...or maybe a concept album based on that kind of mood? Just so you know, it would be incredibly cruel to give us such a tiny taste of something so beautiful, and than say "no, you can't have anymore ever again!" ;)
2. After Kevin Moore left, the band generally moved toward more of a heavier, busier, more rhythmic guitar-driven sound, and away from the synth/bass-driven atmospheric and sometimes minimalistic but intricate harmonic/melodiousness/poeticness of I&W/Awake (there are exceptions in either direction, of course). Was this a result of Moore leaving, or was it more that the band wanted to go in that direction anyhow? After all, it was your more heavier songs that seemed to get the widest appeal (Pull Me Under, Lie, Caught in a Web), despite your early promotion of Take The Time and Another Day.
-
1. At the recent listening party in London, I asked whether you might do something to mark the 15th anniversary of Scenes From A Memory. To take it one step further: in celebration of the band's 30th anniversary in a couple of years' time (or at any other point in your career), would you consider organising a live event along the lines of Coheed and Cambria's 'Neverender' series, as part of which you would play all your studio albums over a ten-day/two-week period?
2. It's the year 2033: if you could pick a single moment from your career to tell the grandchildren about, what it would be?
(3. Please could you email me the setlists from each night of the upcoming tour to make my life easier?)
-
Second question:
Are there any other legendary venues you want to check off your bucket list? For instance, Hollywood Bowl, or Boston's Esplanade?
-
1.
How do you intend to bring the orchestral parts of "Illumination Theory" to the live environment ?
2.
Which album would you consider to be your best, and why ?
Finally, new album rocks guys - thanks for taking the time.
-
For MM and JR: Is there any chance that a drum or keyboard book for the new album will be released in the future?
-
Question 1: JP: When it comes to soloing, do you prefer to improvise and work off of what you come up with on the fly, or do you prefer to compose solos beforehand and learn them from there? Any specific examples of what method was used on some fan-favorite solos (Best of Times, Under a Glass Moon, Spirit Carries On to name a few)?
Question 2: Any chance of more "album anniversary" shows where the album is played in full? Just saying, SFAM's 15th would be next year... :D
-

When making the self-titled album did you guys record any B-sides or cover songs to release, and are there any cover songs that you like to play just for fun in rehearsals?
You guys have released the last two Dream Theater albums as instrumental mixes. Do you think you will release instrumental versions of the tracks from the new self titled album?
-

From a fan's perspective, I am very excited to see my favorite band taking part in such a fan-oriented endeavor.
From a mod's perspective, I am very proud to be a member of this forum, and proud of all of the enthusiasm shown by its members and the great questions you guys have contributed.
Can't wait for this.
-
All questions sent to me via PM have been submitted. Any other questions should be posted in this thread, since I am going to be tied up between now and the chat and probably will not see anything sent to me before the chat happens.
-
From a capitalist's perspective.. this world we live in is magnificent, holy crap.
To prove it, Dream Theater exists.
-
Thank you bosk for this opportunity!
First i would like to congratulate the band for releasing a great album!
question 1:What changed at the dynamics of the band, the mood or the chemistry compared to the ADTOE recording process?
question 2:You know that in Greece you have a loyal following.Would you consider coming to Greece again despite the economic carnage of the crisis?
Thank you so much!
-
This is so cool!!
1. To each of the guys, and not counting anything off of the new album, which song are you most proud of?
2. Is the melody in the instrumental break of Lifting Shadows Off a Dream a variation on the Space Dye Vest melody or am I just hearing things :lol
-
2. Is the melody in the instrumental break of Lifting Shadows Off a Dream a variation on the Space Dye Vest melody or am I just hearing things :lol
:omg: I HEAR IT NOW! I don't know if it was intentional, but it definitely has a similar ring, at least at the beginning of it.
-
Great that this is happening!
1. What is your typical day like while you're on tour? (What I'm especially interested in: Do you visit the cities you play in or is there no time for being a "tourist" because the schedule is so tight? And what do you do on days without a show?)
I'm not sure if that counts as one or two questions, so I'm going to leave it at that.
-
My question is for James.... Was their really a live chicken in your underwear during the recent blooper reel with John or is that just a rumor?
-
Let's go ahead and cut the questions there. We have more than enough for 45-60 minutes worth of material, and of course, I'm sure the band will have comments of their own to interject.
I've spoken with everyone in the band and they're good to go. I'll see you all on the air tomorrow!
~W~
-
:metal
-
NO!!! I just edited my question! Pretty please, can that be included?
To JP: What makes a guitar solo a guitar solo to you? Because you said in an interview that there's no guitar solo on Along for the Ride, whereas it's always felt like one to me. Where do you draw the line between solo and just a guitar melody?
-
Any plans for a medley or any new arrangements of old favourites (e.g. Another Hand/The Killing Hand, Caught In A New Millenium, Schmedley Wilcox) for the setlist in the upcoming tour?
EDIT: Dang, I was too late :-[
-

Great question. I've wondered this as well, and I definitely feel like that part in AFTR should be considered a solo.
-
Excellent. Glad I got my questions in the possibility, though they're a bit obscure
-
DT just shared this thread on FB- AWESOME!!!!!

Why did I not know about this? Oh yeah... first time I've checked the forum in forever lol
-
Are you planning to play Octavarium live again someday?
-
Any chance we could hear an extended bass or drum solo on a studio album in the future?
-
When you play Surrender to Reason live is there an intention to extend THAT solo. (please!)
For JLB: when the next batch of ytse jam live boots should be released? ( sorry if someone already asked here)
-

No problem.

This exactly.
Really looking forward to this!
-
When the Along For The Ride tour is over and you've released your next album, will False Awakening Suite still open the live shows, or will it just be used on this tour?
-
How many songs from upcoming album are you decided to play at upcoming tour?
-
I don't have any questions, I'll just sit back and enjoy :corn.
-
Q1: Is the whole band usually in agreement about the themes of the lyrics? (For example the spiritual theme in 'The Spirit Carries On'.)
Q2: Does the band have a regular artist for their artwork?
Thank you in advance.

Not working for me. :'(
-
This is really awesome. One of my favorite interviews of the band I've ever seen.
-
Not working for me. :'(
Too bad, they already answered one of your questions.
-
Can someone please post if they answer one of my questions? I can't watch right now but I'm very curious if they end up picking a question of mine.
-
Great interview, thanks a ton for putting this all together!
-
Not working for me. :'(
Too bad, they just answered one of your questions. Seriously. I tuned in for a spec, and there was your question. Unfortunately, I'll have to catch the recording later

Let's have a look at your chicken!
-
I have a question being answered. :metal
-
I really like the production in the new album, however, just out of curiosity, do you consider it possible to have a different producer on the next album?
-
Jordan's only heard Anna Lee and Eve "once" :lol
-
This is one of the most enjoyable things the band has ever done. Big thanks to the band and to Rai and everyone else who
made this possible.

I totally agree. This is awesome!
-
Hi, Im a big 5.1 DVD-Audio fan. Love that you made the new album availabel in 5.1 and in 96/24. Also I liked Systematic Chaos better in 5.1 that stereo, I think it opens up nicely.
Have you ever thought on remixing all previous albums in 5.1 and in Hi REz (Even Systematic Chaos which is only Dolby Digital)
You really should think about it. Have you heard all the King Crimson 5.1 mixes and how good they are and how much that adds to the music?
-
All of JP's favorite guitar solos are fan favorites as well!
-
Penny Lane :P
-
This is so great :rollin
I might have to catch the rest later, my laptop is starting to die

This is fantastic though, nice to see the guys having so much fun!

The first official show with Jordan (the very windy show) was in Seoul, Inchon (Triport '99 Rock Festival) Korea.
-
I have a question being answered. :metal
Not the best answer ever. :lol
I don't care.
Lol Mangini
-
Mangini :lol

Penny Lane :P
I'm so BEYOND flattered. :blush

-
Jordan has left the building.

MM liked calculus and lunch. No one surprised :lol
-
COME BACK JORDAN :dangerwillrobinson:

Deftones + DT! I approve! :tup
That would kick ass. :metal
-
Wait a second, is the host anyone from here?
-
lol Jordan
The host is Wey
-
Wait a second, is the host anyone from here?
Yes - Weymolith.
-
Awesome interview. Thank you so much to everyone involved!
-
Jordan turned into an iPod commercial :lol
-
That was brilliant, great job Wey, and thanks again to bosk for arranging it! :D
-
Thanks bosk and DTF, thanks Dream Theater. That was awesome :)
-
That was the coolest.
Thing.
Ever.
-
Don't be lazy with the chicken JP, needs to be well done. :police:
-
Ah of course.
Great stuff everybody. Really wonderful that DTF gets this much recognition, feels kinda special in my belly :D
-
Yeah, that was fantastic. A big thank you to everyone who made this happen
-
Thanks to everyone involved, such a great experience!!!!
-
HDTracks of all :soon: albums.
Wouldn't mind hearing SC when it comes out.
-
VERY VERY VERY cool. Thank you everyone involved.
-
So Awesome! And Jordan returning for the Grand Finale!
-
That was fun! :hat
-
I guess it's safe to say that Mike has conquered his fear of drum solos. :lol
-
I haven't been around the forum as long as some of you, but I gotta say that was one of the greatest things to ever take place. All five guys on screen at the same time answering our questions. Loved it.
-
Awesome stuff - and y'all heard me giggle
-
This was way better btw than if they'd been with all 5 of them in a single studio with some random interviewer there. The chicken, and the piano, and the painting etc made it so much cooler.
-
The chicken :rollin
-
This has been one of the coolest thing i've ever seen from a band and their fans, and it needs to be done again!
Thanks once again DTF!!
-
I pretty much missed all of it, but I'm now rewatching. "I can drive a forklift" :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin
-
Awesome work Wey and everyone else involved! :metal :metal :metal :metal Proud DTF:er! :hat
-
Thanks everyone who made this possible! And thanks to DT for answering the questions!
Some hilarious moments there. "You can pull your chicken any time" I lost it :rollin
-
I mean, I've been around these parts as a member since 2005, and as a mod since, I guess, 2007 or so, and that was just amazing.
I'm all warm and fuzzy.
-
I could only catch the last part, but it sounded great! Thanks Rai and Bosk for setting this up and thanks to the band for agreeing! Echoing Milena, this needs to become a yearly tradition! :D
I hope I'll be able to catch up with the whole thing later, somewhere on youtube :)
-
That was great, so fun hearing the guys together like that. Big thanks to the guys here for organising it, as well as those who submitted questions and the band of course :D
Deftones + DT! I approve! :tup
That would be awesome - DT my favourite band and Deftones my favourite live band :coolio I remember James praising Koi No Yokan in an interview before, good to hear he's still listening :metal
-
Well DTF, that was completely awesome! Big thanks to everyone who made it happen!
-
Had a lot of fun! Thanks for making this possible :)

I mean, I've been around these parts as a member since 2005, and as a mod since, I guess, 2007 or so, and that was just amazing.
I'm all warm and fuzzy.
I've been here longer than you have? Wow, I never thought that.
Well again, it's cool does seem to get the stamp 'official DT forum' again. I don't know how active the forum on dt.net is nowadays?
-
I love DTF. Thanks so much, everyone.
-

-
That was amazing! I missed the first part, but i can't believe i got to hear JM speak!!!
-
Thanks Rai and Bosk1!!
I was able to catch the last 15 minutes or so......it was neat to see the lair from which the Bans at MP's forum were instituted, looked like the innards of the Pentagon in there
For a moment I thought I heard an Angel laughing.....then they said it was Deb....then it all made sense..
-
I missed the first part so i'm watching it from the beginning. :corn
-

Oh you. :heart
-
I mean, I've been around these parts as a member since 2005, and as a mod since, I guess, 2007 or so, and that was just amazing.
Same here, but I thought you were already pretty established when I joined, which was autumn 2005.
-
I've just come to the realisation I'm coming up on 11 years with this community.
-
I wonder why they call him Beardsley? :neverusethis:
-
Penny Lane :P
That was a fantastic moment.
I tuned in about three minutes after it started and enjoyed it a lot. Great stuff, a lot of interesting and new information. Huge thanks to everyone that made this possible. :tup
-
For some reason I've always thought Hef had been around since 2002, but he clarified his 2005ish origins a few months ago. So, who's the oldest mod of the lot, forum-wise?
-
yeah, i'm rewatching now so i can catch the first 20-some odd minutes.....
-
I'm glad for the most part they answered all the questions too.
I really hate those kind of things where the band in question just piss about and don't answer anything or give deliberately stupid or short answers.
-
Missed the chat? Is there a link to re-watch perhaps? :D
-
I've just finished to watch it... it was fun! Thank you to all the people involved in the organisation of this chat. I don't think that I've seen other chat with all the members together before. It was really nice to watch them having fun and I think it gave us the chance to have glimpses of what happens among them behind the scenes :tup
-
Damn, I missed it! Is there a link with the complete hangout?

It has to cool down before it can be choked. :xbones
-
Shame about Anna Lee. I'd love not only to hear that live, but to hear them write songs more like that in the future.
-
Wow.....just watched the playback and was happily surprised to hear (2) of my questions asked and answered!
:squee:
Thank you Mods for trusting those were good enough questions to be asked.
The lyrics on this album have a very spiritual feel and mood. Was that intentional or just a by product of where the lyricist is spiritually as an individual at this stage of his life?
1. Is the band aware of how revered John Myung's lyrics are and does that put any pressure on him when writing them, or the band to dedicate a song(s) to his lyrics?
-
strong pronunciation skills of the interviewer

...it was neat to see the lair from which the Bans at MP's forum were instituted, looked like the innards of the Pentagon in there
That was only one half of the room you could see. Here's the control station :

The Oval Room of WeymoLand :lol
-
WOW - I'm so proud that my first ever interaction with the band was annoying all 5 of them with my question about medleys!
Still, the fact that they had so little to say on the subject answers it pretty well for me. Thanks to the mods for including my question even though it was late and for making the whole thing happen, it was really enjoyable to watch and listen to.
I hope it can be made possible again - I'll make sure I have better questions ready then!
-
That's one awesome room, man. Thanks again for an incredible job. :tup
Also, I didn't get the ''Merry Christmas'' joke that was being repeated by James throughout the chat, anyone care to explain it to me?
-
This is really cool and I was both floored that one of my questions was used and that the host pronounced my handle correctly! :lol
Thanks to everyone's hard work!
-
It was really nice watching this. Huge thanks to everyone who made this possible and of course to the band themselves!

Same here, but I thought you were already pretty established when I joined, which was autumn 2005.
Oh, I was. I joined and started being an active member in February 2005 (although I lurked for a loooooooonnnnnnnnngggggg time).
I was already receiving worship by probably July or August 2005.
And then you showed up and ruined everything.
-

Also, I didn't get the ''Merry Christmas'' joke that was being repeated by James throughout the chat, anyone care to explain it to me?
You couldn't see it, James had another Google window open, so every 10 minutes or so another James LaBrie would join the conversation and it would appear at the bottom window visible to us. The first time it happened JP said it looked like a Christmas ornament and I was calling it the backing vocalist.
-
Ah, so that's what you were talking about.
I did occasionally see a pic of JR holding his keytar thing in place of JR himself.
-
The link doesn't work for me :( It just says 'no stream'. Sounds like a great chat though. Looking forward to watching it.
-
Love the 5 min talk about JPs chicken! :lol

As it should be.

Why do I have the feeling that you sit down in a rolling chair, take a deep breath...and say 'Engage' as you simeouteneously push forward to roll into place?
And, I forgot the name but is that The cat Deb made famous in the Caption Game hiding under the desk?
Dilemma is on the desk, HiJynx is under it.
-
Watching it right now. Very cool. Kinda pissed at myself I didn't bother to submit a question.
-
Finally finished. Really awesome job from everyone who organized it!
I found it really interesting that they didn't like medleys at all.
-
And yet, DT have done a lot of medleys. Is it fair to assume that MP was primarily behind that?
-

I think this is a fair assumption.

That's awesome, everybody is great.

That was definitely a great time. Should definitely do another in the future!
Surprised Weymolith could keep a straight face - don't know if it was just me but I was cracking up.
-
Thank you guys so much for doing this. Its a very cool event and a great way to get the entire band involved with the fans. :tup
-
An off-air moment... attempting to get James to laugh.

Did he collapse in a fit of laugher or what? :rollin

WATCHING :caffeine:
-
This was great!
-
Awesome stuff, thanks for organising it! Glad one of my questions got answered, and it seemed to provoke plenty of discussion.
They seemed pretty evasive about the whole orchestral section of IT - perhaps they're taking a small orchestra out with them on tour?
-
Finally finished. Really awesome job from everyone who organized it!
I found it really interesting that they didn't like medleys at all.
Yea I laughed when I heard JP say "I hate medleys" I do agree with him though.
Thanks to everyone who organized this, truly awesome.
-
this is the most fun I've had in a while
-
I also hate medleys.
-
this is the most fun I've had in a while
Since Awake?
-
Got my question answered.... yay!
That was great.
-
"I like to rub my chicken before I pull it" enters JP quotations hall of fame instantly hehe
-
That was as close as we'll get to becoming friends with the members of our favorite band.
Can we make this a semiweekly thing?
-
If only, that was a lot of fun!
-
Awesome.
Great job to everyone involved!
Although I didn't get my questions answered, it felt like the guys were talking with me (all of us), which is a thousand times better.
Funny stuff and now time to listen to the new album which arrived a few hours ago!
-
That was the coolest.
Thing.
Ever.
Also, I lost it at the chicken part. Still giggling
Well done Wey/Bosk
-
Just started watching it now! I wish I could have been around to see it live.
-
Just wanted to thank everyone involved again for this awesome opportunity. It was a really great experience, one that I hope we might be able to do again.
-
The narrator guy obviously never read LOTR before :lol
That's where you'd be wrong, Bombadillo - he has. ;)
-
I'll watch this when I get back from school :caffeine:
-
I just finished watching the entire thing. Great video! I wish I could have seen it live, but those pesky timezone differences are always a problem. :(
I'm glad MM digs the drumming for TDEN, as I think the drumming for that song is great. No surprise that JP was cooking animals. :metal
Great questions from everyone here. Thanks to everyone from DTF that made this happen! Hopefully we can do this for the next album too.
-

Then I hope you mock him extensively for his mistake!

Oh, that's funny. :lol It was also great to see the guys cracking jokes during the chat, I just watched some of the funny bits again. ;D
-
Just watched the video, thanks to everyone who made this happen! :tup Of course a lot of questions (including mine) didn't get asked, but the guys would've had to spend a whole day in order to answer all of them. Hopefully there'll be another live chat at some point!
-
Nice Job Wey! Great to put a face to the name, and Bosk...awesome. A proud day for DTF for sure.
-
Wow, I'm reading the comments and catching the first bits of the video, and I have to say I think this was fantastic. I am really glad this was able to happen. I wish I could have been on when it was going live, but duty unfortunately called. I also should tell all of you that I have heard from the band, and they also were really happy with it. This was a great opportunity for fans and band to connect, and I am honored to have been part of it.
EDIT: Wait...how did a question get submitted from me? I never even sent in any questions. :lol
-
Well you work in mysterious ways.
Great that the band enjoyed it too. Hopefully this will happen again some time.

You posted one in this very thread, o bosky pal of mine.
-
I feel I bad I chuckled when the moderator (Weymolith?) said his name was Beardsly. Looking at him, I thought for a second that was just an alias. :lol
Awesome of the band to do this. They've been taking a few hits from people for not being as communciative with the fans lately. I hope things like this put that to bed.
-
Jsut finished watching the beginning that i missed. Great stuff. Yes, the whole chicken thing was hilarious! Although, even during that i never saw JMX crack a smile! But i did hear him speak, so that's something...
-
Great Q&A! The band seemed to enjoy it and it made things extra special to hear our names called out attached to the questions. Hopefully something like this can be done again in the future. Huge Kudos to DTF for pulling this off. :tup

Weymolith? Never heard of him. ;)

Besides their music, this is the best thing the band has done in a while. Felt very interactive and a lot of cool questions were asked and answered. Still some questions were left out, but I guess those will be answered some time in the future.
Hopefully this can be done again on an annual or every six-month basis
-
They seemed very engaged and open. It was great to have JM in such a setting.
-
What I took away from it is how genuine and nice guys they are. Really classy.
quick question...why did they not want to talk about the easter egg? I mean the album is released and everyone knows about
it but they acted like it was not a topic up for discussion. Anybody know?
-

The easter egg is supposed to be a surprise at the end of the album.
-
TOTALLY Appreciate the effort that went into this, but I found the whole thing kind of lackluster.
-
TOTALLY Appreciate the effort that went into this, but I found the whole thing kind of lackluster.
What were you expecting? Ninja lessons from JMX? A parrot sitting on JLB's shoulder? Too see Manginis third arm? Petrucci to discuss proper hibernation preparation? Jordan to fuse a keyboard into a stone that only a true King could free?
I mean dude.....none of those guys HAD to do that. They could have recited the alphabet for an hour.....who cares. They took the time to participate and the Mods here put the effort into organizing it. I know you said you appreciate it.....but do you?
-
If we ever have another one, I'm putting my first question out there right now:
To JP: So, really, how was the chicken? And what side dishes do you prefer?
I think I speak for the entire forum when I say that this is obviously the most pressing question on all of our collective minds.
:dtfanchat:

:lol
-
TOTALLY Appreciate the effort that went into this, but I found the whole thing kind of lackluster.
Well, I knew there would be at least one negative remark.
Congrats! You are it!

Well, I thought it was pretty dumb, too, actually.
Nah, I'm just pulling your chicken ;D

I'm not objecting, but not in public please. :hat

LOL I LIKE TO RUB IT BEFORE PULLING IT. I DIED WHEN HE SAID THAT.
Also, "Orthogonal? sounds scary"
-
I loved the coincidence of how when "bizarro James" popped up one time, James says "Merry Christmas," and then takes a sip from his snowflake mug.
-
So, now that the chat is over and the big surprise... surprised, where can I find the one post by JP on this forum? :hat
And is it somewhat likely that the DT bandmembers are gonna chime in or lurkmore in the future?

JP proving that DT fans love making shit up and going with it for fun, there was never Easter eggs or nuggets or hidden messages purposely planted in a DT song IMO, something I always kinda knew but went along with it anyway heh

Or......life itself is one big Easter Egg at the end of a Volcanic Mega Epic 37 Disc Concept Album released by DT 4 years before the Big Bang?
-
Yes, it is exactly that!
-
What were you expecting? Ninja lessons from JMX?
Personally no, but I was hoping for lessons on how to properly execute a Myung tackle. ;)
That was a very entertaining webcast. I'm very glad the guys were willing to do it.
-

I'm not sure if this is a joking post or not, because everything about it is factually wrong.

It's obviously a facetious statement.

While internet is back working here, it's quite slow, so can anybody please tell me if any of my questions were answered? Just something I'd like to know. :)
-
I seem to recall hearing your username come up, but I couldn't tell you off the top of my head which quesion(s).

Yes, Scorp did get a question asked. Don't recall which one though.
-
I think it was the "favorite solo" question. In a recent Finnish interview JP only mentioned Voices, but his answer was more detailed here.

I believe we're along for the ride he mentioned Voices, Lines in the Sand, Breaking All Illusions, can't remember if there were more.

^Yeah, those and TSCO... maybe UAGM too?

Weymolith? Never heard of him. ;)

OMG I KNOW!!!1 :panicattack:
-
Just realized today that I had yet to watch this! I started fancying when Mike and Jordan answered my question, and in some detail!
-
I should have posed a question just to hear their reaction to the name Prog Snob.
-
I think it would've been more exciting to hear the guys react to my username than answer my questions - "what, a question from a question mark?" :lol
-
TOTALLY Appreciate the effort that went into this, but I found the whole thing kind of lackluster.
...
Really?
-
I should have posed a question just to hear their reaction to the name Prog Snob.
That would've been cool. :D
-
I cannot believe I knew nothing about this until today...... :loser:
How COOL!!!! Well done Wey, Bosky and everyone who set it up and participated!!! Great questions guys! I was simply amazed you could get all 5 guys to video conference for an hour. What other band would do that for their fans?? It just reminds us the DT is the best.
-
Just wanna say what an awesome thing this was!! I hope it will happen in the near future again! :tup
-
Just wanna say what an awesome thing this was!! I hope it will happen in the near future again! :tup
Agreed. I was thinking about that the other day. It would be great for another up-close and unfiltered conversation with the band. Maybe this year JP will be roasting mutton.
