Title: Big Hath's Roulette The 1st - Final Results!
Post by: Big Hath on August 24, 2013, 12:53:02 PM
Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to Big Hath's inaugural song roulette.  I'll get the first round started soon after Ħ completes his game.  In the meantime, I want to get confirmations from everyone that expressed interest in joining my roulette.

If you are listed here, please confirm with a post below that you are still participating (jingle, since we conversed not long ago, I assume you are confirmed):

- Scorpion - confirmed
- MoraWintersoul - confirmed
- LieLowTheWantedMan - confirmed
- Onno - confirmed
- Lolzeez - confirmed
- Elite - confirmed
- jingle.boy - confirmed
- Dark Castle
- kari

As this is my first roulette I want to keep things fairly simple.  I want to discover some great music, make this easy for the participants, and have a bit of fun in the process.  The categories are broad enough to capture a wide variety of music in each round and not make an participants have to sweat too much:

Round 1: The Best of the Best (send your best song you think I will like)
Round 2: Guitar (a song that contains a particularly strong guitar performance)
Round 3: Male Vocal (a song that contains a particularly strong male vocal performance - song can include female vocals)
Round 4: Bass
Round 5: Keys
Round 6: Drums
Round 7: Riff (a song with a most awesome riff)
Round 8: Female Vocal (song can include male vocals)
Round 9: The Best of the Best 2 (now that you have gotten to know my tastes, it's time to blow me away)

Each round I will rank the songs 1 to 9 and points will be determined by the rank.  #1 gets 9 points, #2 gets 8 points, etc.  Ranking will be determined on how much I like the song, not how much you capture the theme of the round.  Round 9 will be worth double points.

For the riff round, here are a few songs that really get me going - "Crazy Train", "Book of Thel", pretty much anything from Pornograffitti, "Evolution" (Symphony X), the chorus riff from "Fallen" (Symphony X), and the chorus riff from "Sentenced" (Circle II Circle).  Listen to those and you'll get the idea.  Grooving, powerful riffs and off-the-rails awesomeness that just barely holds together due to all the speed and pyrotechnics.

Question?  Is it a standard in roulette where we can't pick two songs from the same band in a single game?

yeah, I suppose so.  I'll make a new list of bands that I liked in the OP.  However, if there is a song I didn't particularly care for, you're free to send another one from that band in a later round at your own risk.

are you interested in joining?

Hey all,

I'm leaving for a 10-day vacation to Portugal tomorrow, and I don't think I'll have a lot of time to be on the internet there... So sadly I'm going to have to decline to cancel my participation. (Unless the roulette doesn't start until next Sunday the 15th of course... :) )

Ding, ding, ding.  Round 1 is underway.

Seriously!?!?!  When the Koreans started handing over ALL the medals to the Americans for what??  Shits and giggles?  Seriously, I don't remember anything about that movie other than mentioning to my buddy that 'if they ALL hand over their medals, I'm leaving'.  Ok, I can understand the top dog handing it over, since he lost and the American didn't kill him.  Maybe the dude that lost to Eric Roberts... but the first three whipped the American's asses!  Why the fuck did they hand over their medals??  Dumbass ending.

Oh, and I'll be sending shortly.

also, they recognize the fact that Tommy's kill shot would have given the Americans enough points to win the match.  Because he withheld the killing blow, the Koreans won.  I guess handing over their medals was the honorable thing to do in their eyes.

Title: Re: Big Hath's Roulette The 1st - Round 1 Results

Round 1 Results

Rank #9, 1 point: jingle.boy - Evergrey - Trilogy of the Damned - I promise, this is not about your comments concerning Best of the Best!  I appreciate you going out on a limb with this one, but I get the feeling I would have liked this more if I already knew the band/was a fan of theirs.  I'm not emotionally invested in the vocalist or the band, so there was never really anything for me to hold on to.  Here are my exact notes as I was listening: "ok, waiting for something to happen here - the vocals at the beginning are not my favorite.  Then we flow into another serene piano-driven section and more of the same type of vocals.  Still waiting for something to happen.  Ok, now we are into the third section that reminds me of more of the same."  I really wanted to like it, since this is a band I've heard a lot about on the forums but never checked out.  I kept waiting for some huge guitar riff or something to break through, something, anything, but ultimately nothing.  I have faith that you are going to make a strong comeback in forthcoming rounds.

Rank #8, 2 points: Scorpion - Adagio - Dominate - Well, this is certainly some dark symphonic stuff.  Very theatrical.  Nice powerful song, and good contrast from some of the others I've received this round.  I like the clean vocals layered with the low growls, kind of reminds me of "Wolf" from Iced Earth.  Although I'm not a fan of that type of blackish growly vocals when they are by themselves.  But the instrumental section does have some redeeming qualities, however.  Unfortunately I don't hear a lot that would make me want to keep coming back to it for many listens.  The chorus repeats multiple times and gets a bit stale for me.

Rank #7, 3 points: Dark Castle - Kvelertak - Liktorn - Intense intro, wasn't quite expecting that as I hit play.  Really dig that early instrumental section, picking up some early-Rush vibes.  Unfortunately these screaming vocals are the undoing for me.  If I were to dig further into this band, I would have to put them in the Between the Buried and Me section where I listen for the instrumental music and tolerate the vocals.  If this song were an instrumental or had different vocals, it might have won the round.

Rank #6, 4 points: kári - 65daysofstatic - Radio Protector - This song edged out the previous one by the thinnest of margins.  Really nice instrumental with some cool crescendos of intensity.  Kind of reminds me of an instrumental Anathema.  However there is just not quite enough going for the song to move it ahead of some of the others.

Rank #5, 5 points: Lolzeez - Return to Forever - Duel of the Jester & the Tyrant - So yes, I have heard of Return To Forever, but the problem is that each time I have tried to listen to them it has just never grabbed me for some reason, even though I adore the work of their individual members.  Luckily, this is slightly better than I remember.  Maybe my tastes have changed somewhat, I don't know.  All of Di Meola's solos are awesome, naturally.  But I still don't think the band quite reaches the highs I've experienced with Elegant Gypsy or some of my Elektric Band live recordings.  Something awesome will inevitably be followed up with something quirky or weird and I lose interest.

Rank #4, 6 points: Onno - Branford Marsalis Quartet - The Return of the Jitney Man - Nice classical jazz/post-bop number, and whoever the pianist is, he is quite a talent.  His nearly 2 minute long solo starting around the 3:30 mark is a beauty and is really the centerpiece of the song.  About the only thing missing for me was a strong central theme that brings the entire song together - Branford and the pianist play around with that little dancing, trill-like bit early and reprise at the end, but it doesn't quite hit my sweet spot.

Rank #3, 7 points: MoraWintersoul - Enochian Theory - This Aching Isolation - Cool atmospheric/industrial opening, and I like the build up/suspense through the opening and first verse, nice use of strings in the background.  I also like how the "industrial" sound effects have a presence throughout the song.  Very emotional vocals, reminds me of Peter Gabriel in spots.  Never quite has that moment where I'm blown away, but overall it was a strong song.

Rank #2, 8 points: LieLowTheWantedMan - Gentle Giant - In A Glass House - Ok, that opening grabbed me.  This reminds a bit of cross between King Crimson and Dixie Dregs.  On the Dregs side it must be the violin and some of the keyboard sounds - also some of the guitar production has a Dregs vibe.  Seriously liking this one, although the vocals are just slightly quirky to be off-putting to me at times.  Strong entry.

Rank #1, 9 points: Elite - Shadow Gallery - Destination Unknown - Was hoping to get some Shadow Gallery since I've heard so much about them here but never listened to them.  Nice opening with piano and vocal, somewhat similar to the Evergrey song, but there is much more of a direction here.  This song takes you on a really nice journey.  Very strong soaring vocals, although I understand the vocalist passed away?  If so that's a shame, he was very talented.  So this song had some really WOW moments both vocally and instrumentally, plus the aforementioned journey it takes you on puts this at the top of the class for this round.

Thanks for the musical journey that round, folks.  Can't wait for the upcoming rounds.  To those that didn't quite finish where you had hoped, don't lose hope!  And to those that came out on top this round, you better bring your "A" games again!

the rest are ok to have more submissions this roulette, but this is at your own risk since they were in the bottom half of my ranking this round.

yeah, they just never hit my radar prior to me finding DTF.  For progressive metally type stuff, I was all about Rush, DT, SymX, Opeth and Porcupine Tree - almost exclusively.  And then just never got around to trying them once I heard about them.  Was very interested after reading about them in both Elite's and DoC's top 50 lists.

entries have started to trickle in for Round 2.  As a reminder, this is the guitar round.  Send me a song that has a particularly strong guitar performance.  Interpret that as you will.

What will take the round?  A face melting solo?  A tasteful classical passage?  A metal onslaught?  Or maybe an uber-technical latin number?

Round 2 Results

Rank #9, 1 point: kári - Modest Mouse - Dramamine - Pretty simple/basic song here, at least to my ears.  Not a huge fan of the stripped down indie/alternative sound.  Unfortunately this song didn't do much (anything) for me.  I've given it multiple tries, but nothing is grabbing me, sorry.

Rank #8, 2 points: Lolzeez - Television - Marquee Moon - Nice groove to this song.  But Again, not a huge fan of the punk/indie/alternative sound - a little too stripped down for my tastes, but it's not terrible.  There is a great deal of substance here.  Singer almost reminds me of a young Mick Jagger.  The extended instrumental section has a nice build to a pretty nice climax.  If I were into this kind of music, I could definitely see this being a favorite song, but alas, I am not.

Rank #7, 3 points: Onno - The Aristocrats - Louisville Stomp - Nice little instrumental number.  Not a huge fan of that rockabilly guitar tone, but he sure is giving that guitar a workout.  The mellow section just before the 2 minute mark was really cool.  While the guitar performance was definitely smoking, I find the song to be on the lower end for this round.

Rank #6, 4 points: MoraWintersoul - Wintersun - Time - Epic intro - gets me pumped for the rest of the song.  The transition to the heavier section was awesome.  Enjoy the use of choir and orchestra as a backdrop.  But not a huge fan of the vocalist.  The harsh vocals are just far enough on the black metal side of things that I don't care for it - but even his clean vocals don't sit quite right with me.  Probably would take many more listens of the band and his vocals to get a better appreciation.  Was hoping for a little more from the song after that intro, but it was just ok.

Rank #5, 5 points: Scorpion - Wintersun - Winter Madness - The second song from this band in Round 2.  The song is pretty busy for my tastes.  And again, the vocals are just a touch too far on the shrieking/black side.  I do like the strident folky sections after the verses.  The more relaxed section from 2:47 to about 3:05 was brilliant (the changing feel in the drums are a plus for me).  And that is followed up by a spectacular neo-classical solo.  Very close call between this song and the other Wintersun song, but the back-to-back awesomeness of the relaxed section and solo put this one over the top.

Rank #4, 6 points: LieLowTheWantedMan - Buckethead - Soothsayer - Wasn't quite sure what to expect when I saw this was a Buckethead song since I've heard his music crosses over many, many genres.  This one has a bit of a classic rock feel to it.  Nice transition out of the mellow intro with the slide into the heavy riff - and I really like the staccato turnarounds at 1:15 and 2:07 or so.  Really cool, bluesy solos.  Even though the main riff basically repeats over and over, I still found interest in what was happening because of the magnificent soloing.

Rank #3, 7 points: Elite - Protest the Hero - Sequoia Throne - Sounds like a fun band to listen to.  That vocalist is all over the place.  And that active guitar doesn't stop throughout the entire song it seems.  Always some crazy technical playing going on no matter what.  Pretty crazy song structure as well.  It's not the case, but every measure seems to be in a different time sig.  Anyway, high energy stuff here.  Good entry.

Rank #2, 8 points: Dark Castle - Death - Voice Of the Soul - Like the slightly mysterious opening.  Cool contrast between the driving acoustic and the wailing electric guitars.  Also like the "explosions" into some of the sections by the electric guitar.  For such a short song it goes through several changes and definitely packs a punch.  The song seems to contain a lot of emotion, even though there are no lyrics to back that up.

Rank #1, 9 points: jingle.boy - Magnus Karlsson's Free Fall - Not My Saviour - Ok, still waiting for something to happen . . . ah, there it is!  Great crunchy guitar tone.  Love it.  Also appreciate the energy of the song.  Nice little flourishes on guitar before the second verse, big fan of that kind of stuff.  Solo started off a little mellow compared to the rest of the song, but dang if he didn't start ripping it up soon thereafter.  Certainly ends with a nice little explosion of notes as well.  Really liked it.

Hear we are at Round 3 folks.  Looking for great songs that include a particularly strong male vocal performance.  As a reminder, female vocals can be a part of the song either as a duet or backing vocals.

kári, Scorpion and Lolzeez have some ground to make up.  Onno, jingle, Dark Castle and MoraWintersoul make up a tight bunch in the middle of the pack.  Who is going to break through to join LieLow and Elite at the top?

Just to clarify something... it's still the TOTAL song quality that matters as far as scoring?  IE, it could be an awesome voice, but if you hate the song, it'll score low.  As  opposed to an awesome song with a pretty good voice... that would score well.

In short ... song > vocal performance?

Round 3 Results

First, let me say this: Folks, this was a STRONG round.  There is no shame in finishing in the bottom half here.  Every song had some really good stuff going for it.  And so I don't have to say this in every song blurb, it's too bad I had to rank most of the songs where I did, but I am beholden to the rules I set forth.  The awesomeness begins early in this list and gets better as it goes down the ranks.  Now, on with what you came here for.

Rank #9, 1 point: Lolzeez - Faith No More - Land of Sunshine - The only FNM song I think I've ever heard is the wackiness of "Epic", so I wasn't sure what to expect.  While I really like the sung portions, there are a lot of spoken word/sample/laughing parts I can best describe as "cornball" that kind of throw me off.  It's a good song, but unfortunately this round was so strong it gets pushed to the bottom.  My guess is that this song is much better when listened to in the context and flow of the album it appears on.

Rank #8, 2 points: kári - Jeff Buckley - I Know It's Over - Such a delicate song.  So much so that it's hard for me to compare it to the rest of the entries in many ways.  It's a very haunting mix of song and vocals.  Ultimately I think it boils down to there not being enough changes throughout the song to place it higher, in that way it is kind of similar to the next song in the ranks.  The climax near the end is pretty much the only part that really grabs me.

Rank #7, 3 points: Dark Castle - Periphery - Scarlet - High energy song.  High energy condiments as well.  At some points the vocalist makes me feel like I'm listening to Protest the Hero again form the last round.  He covers quite a wide range of styles, unless there are more than one vocalist in the band - not sure.  The clean vocals are great and I can get into the harsh vocals as well.  In the end I would have liked a bit more variation in what is happening in the song.  I felt like the only real change was in that brief break about 3/4 of the way through.

Rank #6, 4 points: jingle.boy - Neonfly - The Messenger - Good vocalist.  He has kind of an 80s-metal quality to his voice.  Nice heaviness throughout most of the song.  I especially like the thrashiness that commences around 3:30 - and the brilliant solos contained therein.  But in the end, not quite enough standout moments for me to rank it higher.

Rank #5, 5 points: Elite - Royal Hunt - Tearing Down The World - Nice symphonic opening that pretty much carries throughout the entire song.  I feel like I should like this one more, but something about it just isn't fully clicking yet.  Definitely has my interest, but the song/band will require further research.  (I thought something similar after first hearing parts of Images and Words, and that became a top 5 album/band for me.)

Rank #4, 6 points: Onno - Flying Colors - Blue Ocean - Really good proggy, kind of poppy, rock song.  I like the active bass line (sorry jingle!).  It's Dave Larue, so it's going to be good.  Really catchy chorus in this one, and I like the background vocal "ahhhs".  I also like those syncopated keyboard-led hits in the pre-chorus.  I hear Neal Morse's fingerprints on this song.

Rank #3, 7 points: LieLowTheWantedMan - Ours - Fallen Souls - Wasn't quite sure about the song at first with those moody vocals at the start, but things really picked up from there.  Definite Bono/U2 vibe from this guy.  He definitely brings it.  I'm catching a slight Porcupine Tree vibe at times, not so much with the vocals, but with some of the instruments - it's not overt, but something about the song makes me think of PT.

Rank #2, 8 points: Scorpion - Accept - Shadow Soldiers - Cool intro and transition to an even better grooving riff.  The singer doesn't have a great voice by any stretch, but he fits this band/song perfectly.  This sounds really weird, but he kind of sounds like a cross between Jorn Lande and Lemmy.  The song is a bit repetitive, but I don't mind due to the awesome sounding guitars and great riffs.  Really strong entry.

Rank #1, 9 points: MoraWintersoul - Wolverine - A House of Plague - Holy cow! This was awesome.  Nice brooding song, great vocals.  Kind of Opethy in the guitars at times.  Kind of a Gothic sounding at times as well.  I'm thinking I need to get to know this band a little better, like right now.  Just ordered their latest album.

I can't wait to see Wolverine live at ProgPower Europe! Good pick, Milena (and it was you who introduced me to them) :)

As for the results; middle of the pack, not too hsabby, but still maintained the #1 spot overall. Songs are scoring lower each round so far though, so it's probably time to bring out some more awesome stuff. Will send shortly!

Round 4 is starting

Send great songs that include a particularly strong bass performance.  Funk?  Upright jazz?  The next Jaco in the fusion world?  Or maybe a metal master?

Round 4 Results (a day early! Yay!!)

Another strong round.

Rank #9, 1 point: LieLowTheWantedMan - Spiral Architect - Spinning - Hmm, I like the bass playing here, but the song as a whole is a little too chaotic for me to really get into it fully, even with multiple listens.  Also, not a huge fan of the vocals.  Unfortunately there were stronger songs and this one gets pushed to the bottom.

Rank #8, 2 points: Elite - Mr. Bungle - Squeeze Me Macaroni - Let's see, this was like listening to Primus, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the Beastie Boys . . . all at the same time.  I'm . . . not sure what else to say.  Definitely interesting and fun to listen to, but in the end I think there wasn't quite enough to make me like it musically or take the song more seriously than just a novelty.

Rank #7, 3 points: kári - The xx - Islands - Pretty minimalistic song, not bad.  I like this type of electro-indie music much more than the somewhat under-produced sound (at least to me) you normally get.

Rank #6, 4 points: Dark Castle - Intronaut - Milk Leg - I like those spaced-out vocals.  Some cool polyrythmic stuff going on too.  I actually liked the last half of the song more than the first.  Cool bass work, especially in the calm relaxed section, although I was hoping for a little more variation overall.

Rank #5, 5 points: Lolzeez - Rage Against The Machine - Take The Power Back - Really liked this one.  Love that funky bass opening.  Great groove.  Cool bluesy guitar licks later in the song as well.

Rank #4, 6 points: MoraWintersoul - Sieges Even - Stigmata - Some Rushness here, especially that part before the first verse, it's particularly Hemispheres-like.  I like those little bass runs.  Nice progressive rock with a positive tone to it.  I will say that this song has stuck in my head more than any other so far this roulette.  I find myself singing the melodies from this song all the time.

Rank #3, 7 points: Scorpion - Trioscapes - Blast Off - Ah, some fusion goodness.  Sorta?  Progressive Jazz Metal?  Is that a thing?  Mad skills with all three guys here.  The drummer is pretty insane.  Love the bass chords during the sort of drummer-solo/breakdown section.  But I did think going with the distorted bass tone was a bit questionable during the solo.  Also on the downside, for jazzy stuff like this, I would prefer a stronger main theme or melody that the group either builds up to or states at the beginning before returning to near the end.  Here I felt like they just jumped into some improvisation-like playing and stayed in that mode most of the way through.  Really cool song though.

Rank #2, 8 points: Onno - Stick Men - Nude Ascending Staircase - Cool spacey proggy song with sort of a fusion edge to it.  What can you say about Levin that hasn't been said.  Master of the low end, especially the bass strings on the Chapman.  The entire song was really cool, but my favorite part was the short bass lick at 2:48.

Rank #1, 9 points: jingle.boy - Thought Chamber - Sacred Treasure - I was kind of disappointed when the vocals came in, I was sort of hoping this was going to be an instrumental based on the intro.  Then I realized it was the dude from Affector, so I was cool with it.  Really dig that keyboard sound.  I also like the guitar work going on underneath the vocals (during second verse or so).  The only downside was the solo section being a bit predictable and not as interesting as the rest of the song to me.  Overall it was an awesome song.

Round 5 Results

Rank #9, 1 point: Dark Castle - Grimes - Visions - I have no idea what Grimes is other than a Simpsons character.  Based on the cover art I was not sure what to expect, but it definitely wasn't electro-pop, Asian melodies, and a little girl singing?  Sorry, not really my kind of thing.

Rank #8, 2 points: LieLowTheWantedMan - Hatfield and the North - Share It - Fun enough song.  Cool little keyboard solo and interesting things happening here and there, but I'm guessing I won't become a huge fan of this genre.

Rank #7, 3 points: Scorpion - Sigh - Slaughtergarden Suite - The hammer strikes and "chain" sound effects were kind of drowning out the rest of the song for the first few minutes (probably a bad combination of the mp3 and the tiny pc speakers I was listening on), and the vocals are a little to shrieky for me.  But there is some cool stuff going on here.  It's kind of a weird mix between black metal and dance music.  That keyboard solo was awesome, however.

Rank #6, 4 points: kári - Black Star - Christopher O' Riley - You mentioned this was a cover, but I don't know the original song either, so this one was totally new to me.  For a solo piano piece to really grab me, it needs to have lots of energy but also be very dynamic.  This one has both a brings the listener through several emotions very quickly.  Great song.

Rank #5, 5 points: Lolzeez - Cult Of Luna - I, The Weapon - Real gloomy atmosphere.  About halfway through it reminded me of music from Double Dragon III on the NES.  I really liked the song overall, but thought it could have been edited down a couple of minutes.

Rank #4, 6 points: MoraWintersoul - Chroma Key- On the Page - Really cool song.  I like the clean piano sound with that strong beat.  Reminded me of Space Dye Vest at times.

Rank #3, 7 points: jingle.boy - Erik Norlander - Rome is Burning - Nice strong intro.  Instrumentally this is great, but the song suffers a bit from some of the vocal sections.  Not the vocals themselves, but some of the melodies and the rhythms being used in the instruments seemed slightly less strong than the strictly instrumental parts.  Also really liked the bluesy section, but could have done without some of the vocal ad libbing.  Awesome guitar/keys duet and solo sections.

Rank #2, 8 points: Onno - Levin Minnemann Rudess - Scrod - Loved pretty much everything about this song except all the crazy stuff going on during Jordan's solo.  They guys move seamlessly through different sections, feels, patterns, etc.

Rank #1, 9 points: Elite - Beardfish - And The Stone Said 'If I Could Speak' - Pretty cool Yes-like sound.  Like many songs in this genre it tends to drag a bit in spots, but fortunately there were enough high points to overcome that.  Great throwback 70's prog rock song.  The top three songs in this round were really close but this one barely edges out the other two.

I disagree.  You should be stressed.  You should feel terrible, even worse than from being sick.  Keeping us waiting like this.  You're a horrible, horrible human being.

Dude, I know what it's like... jingle.family just went through the same thing a couple of weeks ago.  Mrs.jingle was completely laid out for a week and a half (and I was traveling through some of it).  I started to get it, but nipped it in the bud fortunately... still have the sniffles.

You've been running a good roulette, so no need to sweat it.

Round 6 Results.  Some really cool songs in this round!

Rank #9, 1 point: Onno - Strapping Young Lad - Shitstorm - While this was technically awesome and a display in dexterity and stamina, the song was a little too extreme for what I was looking for.  Devin Townsend is a really weird artist for me.  I LOVE some of his stuff like Addicted and Terria, but some of the more extreme work like this is just not my thing (at least for now - who knows how my tastes will change in the future).

Rank #8, 2 points: Dark Castle - The Black Dahlia Murder - A Shrine To Madness - Pretty ridiculous speed and technicality from the drummer.  Vocals/lyrics bordered on comedy for me.  I really wasn't expecting that guitar solo when it kind of appeared out of nowhere, which was pretty cool.  Overall this was a bit too extreme at the expense of more lyrical/melodic drumming I am a fan of - in this way it was very similar to the SYL song.

Rank #7, 3 points: Lolzeez - The Mars Volta - Day Of The Baphomets - Are all their songs like this?  Goodness, the thought of making it through an entire album of stuff this energetic and zany has me sweating a bit.  Pretty cool Latin flavor in the percussion.  The vocals are just too "on" for me to enjoy through an entire song this long it seems.

Rank #6, 4 points: LieLowTheWantedMan - Gong - Master Builder - Whoa, really spaced out, man.  Drumming has a very mesmerizing quality to it.  This was a really cool song and I liked most of it, but thought the sax took away from my enjoyment of the song a bit.

Rank #5, 5 points: kári - Sigur Rós - untitled #8 (Popplagiđ) - Very dreamlike first part - in a way, this section really reminded me of the Jeff Buckley song you sent me.  I liked the shift to a slightly darker tone and tribal beat about halfway through.  Then another great shift of intensity with the drums a couple of minutes later.

Rank #4, 6 points: Elite - Oceansize - Massive Bereavement - For some reason it was very difficult for me to review/rate/rank this song.  I've listened to it a few times but there is quite a bit going on and it seems like one of those songs I need to spend a great deal of time with to have it really grow on me.  For now it ends up close to the middle of the pack as I don't dislike it, but the initial impression isn't quite as favorable as the some of the other songs this round.

Rank #3, 7 points: Scorpion - Animals as Leaders - The Price of Everything and the Value of Nothing - Sweet drum fills and transitions.  Nice groove.  I guess it was an artistic decision, but the heavy guitars are really buried in the mix.  I like that clean lead however.  The drum machine was cool at first, but it kinda loses me after a while.  Wish they would have faded it out and just had the actual drummer going crazy (assuming there was even a real drummer on this song?).

Rank #2, 8 points: jingle.boy - Ice Age - To Say Goodbye Part III: Still Here - I love the high energy opening.  Great production and separation between the instruments.  Cool guitar work underneath the vocals.  Also like those keyboard runs near the end of the song.  Really liked this one!

Rank #1, 9 points: MoraWintersoul - Apocalyptica - Fisheye - Nice!  I knew of these guys, but to be honest, I had no clue what else they did besides Metallica covers.  I knew they did other stuff/originals but had no idea it was quite this good.  Very cool melodic grooviness here.  This was awesome!

Title: Re: Big Hath's Roulette The 1st - Round 6 Results
Post by: Big Hath on October 12, 2013, 01:03:25 PM
Quick note on the upcoming Round 7.  To be honest I have been looking forward to this round the entire roulette.  I LOVE a great riff.  And as a reminder, here is what I wrote in the OP:

"For the riff round, here are a few songs that really get me going - "Crazy Train", "Book of Thel", pretty much anything from Pornograffitti, "Evolution" (Symphony X), the chorus riff from "Fallen" (Symphony X), and the chorus riff from "Sentenced" (Circle II Circle).  Listen to those and you'll get the idea.  Grooving, powerful riffs and off-the-rails awesomeness that just barely holds together due to all the speed and pyrotechnics."

This is really the only round where I actually have something in mind, BUT if you have something you can send that might not fit those parameters but still blow me away, please send it.

Woot woot! Apo had a couple of amazing albums when they stepped out of the cover-band-schtick. Don't get me wrong, I loved their covers, but they can write a really good song. I didn't like their latest album much though.

Riffy stuff coming your way!

Cool! Glad you liked it somewhat. Oceansize surely demands more time to fully appreciate it, but I think you'll know how to handle that!

I'll send you some great riffs soon!

Round 7 Results.

Rank #9, 1 point: Onno - Alestorm - Shipwricked - Maybe you shouldn't send songs or artists with "storm" in them. :lol  Fun song, but not really into pirate music.  It seemed to be mostly just chugging rhythms in the guitar.  And a bit repetitive overall.  I seem to remember trying a couple of songs from this band several months ago and nothing grabbed me then either.

Rank #8, 2 points: kári  - Dinosaur Jr - Sludgefeast - Nice heavy groove, although maybe a little too "plodding" for what I really like.  And the vocals were kind of, I don't know, "Dylan-esqe?", which for me isn't a good thing.  The descent into noise was "interesting", but when the song comes back in, I really liked that section (last minute or so).  That part really saved the song for me.

Rank #7, 3 points: MoraWintersoul - Cloudkicker - Dysphoria - I was hoping this song would go to a few more places than it did.  It was promising at first as I liked the sound of everything, but it just kind of felt like the same tempo, same dynamics, same feel, etc. as the song moved along.  The single-note/chord riffing is ok for a bit, but this song has it in spades.  But I am interested enough in this guy to check out the other albums he has released.

Rank #6, 4 points: Scorpion - Trivium - Shogun - I like the intro where the intro and drum beat kind of find each other, and the cool riff into and during the first verse.  I also like the vocals and melodies in the chorus.  Nice little bluesy solo.  So I guess overall I just "liked" stuff but never really "loved" anything about the song.  I hate to tell you this, but had you sent the Accept song this round, you probably would have won it easily.  It had a kickass riff.

Rank #5, 5 points: Dark Castle - Holy Grail - Hollow Ground - First off, I really like the vocals.  Maybe slightly disappointed in the riff here, seemed like mostly basic chugging in the verses/transitions and simple chords in the chorus, although the little turnaround at the end of each chorus is pretty cool.  The bridge riff is really nice.

Rank #4, 6 points: Lolzeez - Rainbow - Stargazer - Obviously familiar with the song, but only as a cover version, so this gets a pass.  This riff definitely gets a plus in the attitude department.  I see why this is such a classic in the genre and has been an influence on so many bands.  Cool imagery and sort of a middle-eastern vibe at times, especially around the solo section.

Rank #3, 7 points: Elite - Firewind - Into the Fire - Decent enough riffage.  Nice power in the intro, and the speed really kicks in during the verses.  It's a really cool song, but it's missing something that I just can't pinpoint, but it still gets the job done this round.

Rank #2, 8 points: jingle.boy - Triumph - Headed For Nowhere - Kind of close to what I was looking for, though maybe a little tame as a whole.  Chorus reminded me of Journey or something like that, and I'm looking for more power, more attitude, more . . . balls, I guess.  The solo section was awesome, however!

Rank #1, 9 points: LieLowTheWantedMan - Melvins - Revolve - Really cool groove to this song.  It has sort of a stripped down sound (particularly in the verses), but still comes across pretty heavy.  I think the attitude of the riff is what makes this one rise to the top.  The little tag section at the end is pretty cool as well.  Really digging this one!

Round 8 Results.  Just like the previous vocal round, quite an awesome set of songs here.

Rank #9, 1 point: LieLowTheWantedMan - Emily Wells - Symphony 5 Was a Surprise - Not bad.  But I probably wouldn't listen to an entire album of something like that.  The singing kind of reminded me of the Bjork song - a little out there, kind of whimsical, etc.

Rank #8, 2 points: Lolzeez - Björk - Pagan Poetry - So I didn't hate it.  Maybe not quite my cup of tea, but it at least had my attention most of the way through.  The "she loves him" part at the end lost me a little bit.

Rank #7, 3 points: Onno - Diablo Swing Orchestra - Balrog Boogie - Ha! Weird!!  Fun groove, though.  I liked the muted trumpet solo.  And the orchestra hits near the end.  Gritty, operatic big band swing!

Rank #6, 4 points: kári - Daughter - Youth - Kind of reminded of a song you would hear during the montage scene of a network drama.  Very melancholy feeling.  Pretty bleak lyrics too.  This song and the next were very close in my ranking.

Rank #5, 5 points: Dark Castle - Beyonce - Love On Top - Gonna be honest, I was looking forward to listening to this ever since I saw it was a Beyonce song.  I always thought she had a good voice and it doesn't hurt that she's hot as hell.  This song kind of gave me a more upbeat Whitney Houston vibe, with a little Mariah and Jackson 5 mixed in.  Pretty standard R&B backing track, but it kind of reminded me of Go West with the horns and stuff, so that was a good thing.

Rank #4, 6 points: jingle.boy - Vandroya - Why Should We Say Goodbye - Really nice, reminds me of some of those favorite 80's/early 90's power balads.  Cool guitar solos!  Didn't quite make me want to run out and buy albums like the top 3, but it was a really good song and makes me interested to see what else they do.  Yep, she's hot.

Rank #3, 7 points: Elite - Effloresce - Sunset in the Snowdome - Liked this one a lot.  Flows from atmospheric to heavy and back pretty seamlessly.  I'm not totally crazy about her voice, but it didn't hurt the song too much.  She even threw in a few growls here and there.  It got a bit generic at times, but overall this was a really good song.

Rank #2, 8 points: MoraWintersoul - Triosphere - Human Condition - Ok, wow she has some pipes.  Nice gritty sound.  Nice riff too! (you should have sent this last round!)  I really like the sound/production of this song, it's really in your face, particularly the vocals - reminded me of Luna Mortis in that way.  This was freaking awesome!

Rank #1, 9 points: Scorpion - Touchstone - Wintercoast - Whoa, after the talky part, that intro was freaking sweet!  Thought it was going to be a really heavy song, but then it's kind of atmospheric with very light vocals.  I love that woman's voice.  Ah, here comes the awesome.  Does a great balancing act between prog rock and metal.  Wow, where have you been hiding this?

Final Round Results.  This is it, folks!  Another good batch of songs to finish things off.

Rank #9, 2 points: LieLowTheWantedMan - 10cc - Wall Street Shuffle - Really liked how this one opened with the riff full of attitude.  But it kind of lost me once the mood relaxed a bit.  Overall really cool, but it had some bits I can best describe as "Broadway" that I wasn't crazy about.  Interesting that I used one street in Manhattan to describe the song titled after another.

You had some really strong entries this roulette.  I have already bought the Ours album, and I have Gentle Giant and Melvins high up on my "must check out" list.

Rank #8, 4 points: Scorpion - Reverence - After the Leaves Have Fallen - Nice message song.  Just a little short I thought.  There's really only the verses and then an awesome solo, but that's just kind of it.  I feel like I've heard this band before . . . wait, I've got it, I listened to their song "Too Late" a few times several months ago and really liked it, probably a few notches more than this song unfortunately.  This song did remind me that I need to go back and check them out again, kudos for that!

From your entries, I have already bought the Accept album, and am about to place orders for both the Trioscapes and Touchstone albums.  I may end up getting the other Touchstone albums they've released since I liked that song so much.

Rank #7, 6 points: kári - Talk Talk - I Believe In You - Loved it when the keys came in with that ethereal sound about halfway through.  After that it got a little weird for a bit.  I like the angelic sounding ending!

You sent a lot of stuff this roulette that I never would have encountered.  Some of the artists I want to check out further are Sigur Ros, Daughter, and Talk Talk.

Rank #6, 8 points: Lolzeez - Chvrches - Gun - It's you I'll come for.  You know what, I actually kind of like it!  Reminiscent of the Grimes tune I received earlier, but more coherent as a song/less ethereal.

You've gotten me interested in several bands as well such as more Rainbow stuff, Rage Against the Machine (that was a surprising song for me), Cult of Luna, and amazingly, Chvrches.  I also need to go back and listen more carefully to Return to Forever.

Rank #5, 10 points: Dark Castle - Witchcraft - Deconstruction - Love the instrumental stuff - nice doomy sound.  Kind of on the fence about the vocals, but that's really my only knock on this song.  Really strong entry.

You and Onno sent perhaps the widest array of musical styles this roulette.  I have the Death album high on my list of things to order and need to further explore Intronaut, Holy Grail, and Witchcraft.

Rank #4, 12 points: MoraWintersoul - Leverage - Wolf and the Moon - I really like the symphonic elements.  Very dynamic and cinematic sounding band.  This song and the next one were really close when I was ranking, hard to decide as I wanted to place each one higher after I listened to it.

I think you were the most consistent player this roulette as almost all your songs were really strong.  I've already bought one Wolverine album and will probably get at least one more soon.  The Apocalyptica and Triosphere albums will also be ordered in the near future.  Need to check out Enochian Theory, Sieges Even, and Leverage further.

Rank #3, 14 points: jingle.boy - Lost in Thought - Beyond the Flames - Cool intro, nice use of sitar, with good heavy riffing.  Kind of had a Myrath feel to it.  Not too crazy about the vocalist, however.  I like the more relaxed section with the acoustic (or maybe 12-string) underneath.  Also thought that really busy keyboard solo over the chugging guitar was quite awesome.  Overall it was a good song, but it didn't quite have enough going for it to outpace the top two.

Spectacular comeback into contention after that first round.  I've already bought the Ice Age album.  And have many more to look into such as Magnus Karlsson, Thought Chamber, Vandroya, Triumph, etc

Rank #2, 16 points: Onno - The Wrong Object - Yantra - The opening section had a really strong Mingus vibe.  I love that bari-sax sound (assuming that's what it is).  Then about halfway through I feel like I'm listening to Bitches Brew - awesome!  Vibraphone? - now it's the Modern Jazz Quartet!  This was a really cool song with a mix of lots of different jazzy elements.  Great comeback after a few lower scoring rounds.

As I mentioned earlier, you sent a crazy variety of music!  Need to get that Flying Colors album.  Also need to listen to those two Levin projects more.

Rank #1, 18 points: Elite - Magic Pie - A Life's Work - Yep, this is awesome!  Cool proggy section after the atmospheric intro.  I like all the unison and call/response bits.  Lots of cool sounds and patches on the keyboard, too.  I like that vocal driven part with the very interesting vocal harmonies.  Don't hear too much in this type of music.  That short keyboard solo around 16:00 was magic - I love that rhodes-like sound he was using.  This was a really great song and just what I was looking for.  Album ordered!

Really great group of songs from you this roulette.  Even your two lowest scoring songs have me interested in those bands to some extent (Mr. bungle, Royal Hunt).  Already ordered Shadow Gallery and Magic Pie.  Have Effloresce, Protest the Hero and Beardfish high on the list as well.

Final Ranking

Elite - 70
jingle.boy - 66
MoraWintersoul - 64
Onno - 52
