Title: Elite's Roulette v. 2 - We're done; final results.
Post by: Elite on August 15, 2013, 05:09:58 PM
So, it's apparently time for my second roulette, in which people may try to get my tastes down as well as they can. I'm going to start this one in the weekend, but before I can do that I need a couple more participants. I'll be doing an in-or-out style roulette, in which the weakest link every round loses, regardless of how well he or she has done in previous rounds.

In other words, here's the deal;
- I need a total of ten participants
- The roulette will have a total of 7 rounds
- First round is open and 2 players get eliminated
- Second round is open and another 2 players get eliminated
- This leaves 6 people for the subsequent rounds and after every round, the weakest link gets eliminated
- The final round between the two people that have survived the longest will be somewhat special

Here's my past roulette: https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=34217.0

In there you'll find a huge list of bands you are NOT allowed to send. I would also appreciate it if you would not send in songs by bands used in that particular roulette. Like with theseoafs's ongoing roulette, you may send multiple songs each round, in a particular order. If there's any song in there I'll know, I'll go to the next one. If you fail to send me a song I haven't heard within the time limit (which WILL be a hard time limit this time), you're out.

For further reference, here's my last.fm account (https://www.last.fm/user/richardsluijk), though you might need to befriend me to properly see everything. Also this is not really an accurate showcasing of my listening habits, since I listen to a lot of stuff on CD, but basically pretty much every band on there is off-limits, but if it has a very low amount of plays, you might try sending something that's on there.

The current list of participants is as follows:
- kŕri (winner of my last roulette, here to defend his crown)
- WindMaster
- Lolzeez
- jingle.boy
- senecadawg2
- kingshmegland
- Nekov (going for the revenge)
- Dr. DTVT
- Onno
- ?
- Scorpion

As said, I need six more. Anyone is able to join, except people who were in my last roulette (sorry guys!) and people whose name I've never seen before on the boards (don't worry, I'll have seen you if you're a frequent poster), as long as you can send me some good stuff and as long as you can send it one time. Sign up simply by posting in this thread that you're willing to play!

UPDATE: Signing up is closed, 10 participants are here and ready to go!

Let's get it on!

I wanna play! Though, it will be my first time participating in a roulette so it'll be interesting to see if I last past the first couple rounds.

All of the above are in, including Nekov. Yes, you can have another shot. It's just that I would like to try this with different people, but since I need like one more, I suppose I could make an exception, especially concerning you ended up in second place. Go for your revenge!

Updated the OP with all participants. You may now use this thread to thrash talk against each other before the first round starts!

Rich... you never said the mode of submission.  Grooveshark ok?  Spotify?  What about sending you mp3's directly... some of us have some relatively unknown shit.

In my defense, you changed the rules in during that last round, so it's your fault I ended up second. There, I said it

Did I? but I suppose the rules for the last round were pretty ridiculous anyway, compared to most (if not all) other roulettes. That's partly the reason why I chose to keep it simple this time, because I feel there's not really a good and honest ranking system anyway.

That wacky contract/betting stuff was OK, the thing is you said there was going to be a last round after that one and you eliminated it  :'(
Title: Re: Elite's Roulette v. 2 - Round 1 will start soon!

Oh yeah, that! I think I did that mainly due to time constraints, the roulette was already going on pretty long before that contract/betting round. I aim to get this one done a little more quickly!

U lazy and should lose points for making our host do your research.

It's a bunch of weird ass shit.  Only about 1/2 a dozen bands that I recognized, so I'm pretty safe.

Seriously, I shouldn't even have had to send the song I sent because you should have already known it.  Furthermore, anyone who doesn't know it can go drink a big can of fail.  From a top 5 album of mine, I had a hard time deciding which song to send.

For submissions:
- I prefer Spotify links, so I can put the songs in a playlist. These can be sent via PM.
- If for some reason your song of choice is not on Spotify, Youtube works fine too. You may also send an e-mail with an mp3-file. I think the e-mail address in my profile here should work.

ROUND 1

Send me anything, as long as it's not overly long and as long as it's one song. I'll listen to everything about 3 times and do (short) write-ups for all the songs. The two players that send me the songs I'm least excited about will be eliminated. Please get your songs in before Sunday 23:00 GMT (17:00 EST), I'll listen to them starting on Monday and get the results in as soon as I can.

This band is too well known for my unknown lists.  The omission of this band (and the one I want to send next round) in his banned list is really glaring.  Like a Klan member in Harlem obvious.

I just got back from two days away from home. Due to some people asking me for my e-mail address, I have not received everything yet, so I won't listen until I have everything. Also, Lolzeez, I never got your submission, so you should maybe send again.

Finally, WindMaster confirmed he is not playing, so I have one more open slot. First person to send me a song and post in this thread can join in instead of him.

Title: Re: Elite's Roulette v. 2 - Round 1
Post by: Elite on August 21, 2013, 05:16:48 PM
I suppose it's a good thing I'm starting a nice job as a student councilor in September, because if the rate of awesomeness stays equal to this, I'm going to be broke by the end of this roulette. (yeah, clichés, I know! :P ) But this first round was so ridiculously good that I found it hard to vote off anything. Well, there was one song I didn't really like, but the rest was pretty much awesome.

The way I'm doing this is as follows; I put all the songs in a playlist and just play them with shuffle on while doing other stuff (today I was playing video games for the first time in a year) and I'm writing some stuff down based on what I hear (without knowing what it is, or who it came from). Here's some samples of what I wrote down:
 - 'awesome'
 - 'fantastic groove'
 - 'fuck yeah'
 - 'HOLY SHIT'
 - 'YES!'

Right, on to the songs submitted. Keep in mind any band that has been used may NOT be used again!

Straight on through to the next round:

Participant: jingle.boy
Band: Flaming Row
Song: Rage of Despair

This right here is single-handedly the best song I have received in both this and the last roulette. Holy shit, I ordered the album, because I want to hear all of this. That was fucking fantastic!! Also, thanks a bunch for the very long accompaniment PM, I'll definitely check out the story when I get the album :)

Participant: Scorpion
Band: Evergrey
Song: Recreation Day

Your personal goal of 'better than last time' has been achieved just by sending this song. Why didn't you do so last time? Evergrey has been on my list of bands to check out for a long time, but I never actually did, because the band's name turned me off for some reason. This song convinced me I was an idiot for not doing so. Very, very nice!

Participant: kingshmegland
Band: Demians
Song: Sapphire

Well, that was an awesomely nice song! Pretty straight-forward, yet catchy and overall just awesome! I love how huge everything gets the instant the guitars kick in. Great chorus as well. I want to hear more from this guy (because apparently it's just one person? well he's awesome!) as well :)

Participant: Onno
Band: Barren Earth
Song: Forlorn Waves

Pretty much the heaviest song I received in this round, but I really like some melodic death metal occasionally and this band and song pull it off really well. Some of the best melodeath I've heard recently, awesome!

Participant: senecadawg2
Band: Allen/Lande
Song: The Showdown

A band/project I once downloaded all material from but then never actually went to listen to them. Well, I suppose I should have done so, because this is just some very nice straight-forward heavy metal featuring two of power/prog's well-known voices. Awesome stuff, I get to the rest of their work soon!

Participant: Lolzeez
Band: At The Drive-In
Song: Invalid Litter Dept.

When I this song first came round in this round of mostly heavy stuff, I was like 'what the hell!?'. This was arguably the weirdest song I have received this round, but boy is it groovy and funky. So yeah, I like The Mars Volta and weird stuff, so you got it totally right on this track. Awesome stuff!

---

Where it became a little more difficult:

Participant: Dr. DTVT
Band: Fates Warning
Song: Life in Still Water

This will probably make you angry or something, but in a round full of exceptionally strong songs, this Fates Warning track just didn't do a lot to me. It's not that I disliked it, but I found nothing special about it either. Like I said, I do have one CD by the band (No Exit) and I listened to that and, based on that alone, I never bothered to check out the rest. I'm still not sure of whether I should now.

Participant: Nekov
Band: Frightened Rabbit
Song: Late March, Death March

Your Frightened Rabbit got a very close shave here.. What made it stand out above the two tracks eliminated was that it felt happy, being a fun upbeat song. I particularly loved the chorus and the fun things they did with vocals and will probably listened to the whole album. 'T was a fun song indeed, like you said!

---

Unfortunately eliminated:

Participant: ?
Band: Bruce Soord and Jonas Renkse
Song: Stacked Naked

You were right about me liking The Pineapple Thief and while I do like Katatonia occasionally, I'm not really a fan of Jonas Renkse, because his voice is quite monotone and uninspiring. That was very different on this track, but still it's mainly his voice that puts me off. The music is nice though, with all the electronic stuff going on, but this is not really for me.

Participant: kári
Band: Fleet Foxes
Song: Grown Ocean

I'm sorry pal, but where you won the last Roulette with weird indie songs and post-rock, in this Roulette you're one of the first to go out.. Apparently the times have changed and people send a lot of awesome prog/metal and since that's what I listen to mainly, that's what I'll like more too. On Fleet Foxes; I have been forced to listen to them by a female friend of mine, but I really can't see what the fuzz is about. I find his voice in particular very annoying, but the purposefully 'bad' indie-production is also something I can't really stand. It seems you really like this song and I suppose I can see why, it just isn't for me.

---

I always say that I'll listen to 'almost anything' in music and while I hate it when other people say that, I have always believed it to be true in a way for me, because I do know and like a lot of stuff, but it turns out I definitely have my favourite genres here. Out of the 10 songs I got this round, the only three songs that were not prog/metal ended in the last three places, and although they weren't bad songs at all, they just didn't appeal to me as much. kári and ?, thanks for playing, sorry to kick both of you out so early. I think he'll have it up in two minutes.

:happydance:

Don't sweat it kari... I went from 'first-to-worst' in Nem's roulette.  Shit happens, times and tastes change.

I'll just leave this here Rich for you to go back to sometime.  It's always nice to get another Flaming Row fan recruited.

Elinoire = #1 (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=35218.msg1558379#msg1558379)

You know, it's very hard to have to eliminate two people.

I can help if you'd like  ;)

You don't really have to, because here they are.

First off: eliminating people in this round was MUCH harder than in the first round. I got pretty good songs throughout and I'm very bad at disappointing people apparently. I don't really want to lose anyone playing, but I also didn't want to get stuck in some point scoring system. Hell, that's the whole reason I decided to simply eliminate people instead, so here we have it. I'm really trying to do this as honestly as possible, with simply the weakest song in a round being eliminated and this is how it turned out for this round: Alrighty then, here we are with the results for round 2!!

Straight on through to the next round: :D

Participant: jingle.boy
Band: Epysode
Song: Obsessions

Right after round 1 had finished, Mr. Jingle announced in a Wednesday night chat session at Nick's WPAPU show that the next song he would sent would be one by the band Epysode, off the album that clocked in at #2 on his latest Top 50 lists, just after Flaming Row's Elinore. Well, he did it again, this song is damned amazing and vocally it's indeed awesome, as he said in the PM. Thanks once again man!

Participant: Nekov
Band: Pendragon
Song: The Last Man on Earth

Well, that was all I needed to have it confirmed that I need to listen to Pendragon's other stuff. That was some astounding prog rock goodness. The longest song I have received in any Roulette so far, but considering there were no time-limits except for 'long' and that this song is basically worth every second, I took it. Great!

Participant: kingshmegland
Band: I Mother Earth
Song: Soft Bomb Salad

Well, it takes a little before the band unleashes itself, but then you have something amazing. This is a pretty weird song and my initial listen were along the lines of 'what the hell?', but when the guitars kicked in the whole buildup made sense. That little solo-section is very, very nice and brings the whole piece to a higher level. A very interesting band with a pretty unique sound, I like!

Participant: senecadawg2
Band: Kamelot
Song: Song for Jolee

The single fact that I got a submission from Kamelot was enough to make me realise I should actually listen to this band. I´ve heard people talking about them since forever, but I never gave them a chance. Back when Seventh Wonder singer Tommy Karevik joined Kamelot, I figured I should give the band a try, but still never did. Nelson here obviously knows of and shares my love for MERCY FALLS (:heart) and thus he sent me a song of theirs with their new 'especially fantastic vocalist'. And the vocalist is really what makes this song really nice. Thanks for confirming I should listen to their stuff.

---

Where it became a little more difficult: ???

Participant: Onno
Band: Jurojin
Song: The Winter

A pretty straight-forward metal song, but one that manages to keep interest throughout. Of special note are the guitar leads, the little enhancements on the bass guitar tone at certain points and the chorus, which is pretty awesome in itself. Although the lead-singer doesn't have much variety in his singing, his warm voice gives the rest of the song extra depth.

Participant: Lolzeez
Band: Deafheaven
Song: Dream House

I honestly have no idea what to truly think of this. For those unknown with the band, Deafheaven is a band that blends post-rock, shoegaze and black metal to create some of the most intense stuff I've ever heard, while still maintaining clarity and melody. Dubbed album of the year already by many (online) music magazines, Deafheaven have certainly managed to create something distinguished here. At first listen I was pretty floored, but I can imagine myself getting bored with it if I had to endure an album's worth of this music. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it, but I'm not entirely sure whether I liked it intrinsicly or just because it was different. I'll get back to you at that. Enjoy your stay in my roulette..

---

Unfortunately eliminated: :(

Participant: Dr. DTVT
Band: Tetrafusion
Song: Monologue

You sent the exact same song to theseoafs in his Roulette and his write-up sort-of sums it all up for me as well. There's some interesting stuff going, but the repetitiveness of riffs and vocal melodies doesn't really propel this song into the awesome category some of the other submissions have achieved. Like theseoafs said, I think this band has a lot of potential, but I'm not sold on them just yet. I'm sorry, but this also means the end in my roulette for you.. Thanks for playing!

Participant: Scorpion
Band: Ihsahn
Song: The Eagle and the Snake

The saxophone is awesome! Like, really fucking mind-blowing awesome! The rest of the song, however.. not so much. The verses are okay I guess, if you can get past Ihsahn's death/black metal vocals, but the chorus is really lackluster and even a little boring if you ask me. I had tried Ihsahn's stuff before and loved the saxophone on there, but I had never heard this song, nor the album it came from, but I'm still unsure whether this is for me or not. I'll keep him in mind when looking for new music, but it's not the first thing I'd go to. I'm sorry, your roulette adventure ends here.. Thanks for playing as well!

---

So with just 6 participants left we start the rest of this roulette of death. After the first four people have been lost, after every round, just one player will be eliminated until that leaves us with two finalists who'll duel to the end. Or something like that.

Deadline for your Round 3 Submissions is TUESDAY 23:00 GMT (17:00 EST)

Also, it will be pretty safe to say that every round in this roulette will be open.

I'm glad you enjoyed the Kamelot song. I was a bit worried about it at the time, given that it's not even my favorite track from that album. But I also wanted to showcase a little variety and give you a nice ballad, and figured what the hell it's Tommy Karevik either way  :hefdaddy

I'll have my next submission sent before the end of the day!

Post by: Elite on September 01, 2013, 05:20:28 PM
Results?

No.

:neverusethis:

So, since I had a very busy week, these results are a little later than in the previous rounds. I'll be very busy next week as well, so the following round will probably take a week again (I'll barely be home, starting Tuesday morning through Sunday evening), so I can't really listen as much as I'd want before scoring the songs. After this week though, I have all the time in the world, so I should be able to get this back on track. For now, Round 3 results!

Straight on through to the next round: :D

Participant: senecadawg2
Band: Journey
Song: Of a Lifetime

Holy shit, what did I just hear? No, sir, indeed I did not know that this side of Journey exists too. And of course I know their more well-known songs, but they were never enough to get me to listen to more stuff. This is indeed more raw and ambitious and it was bloody fantastic, thanks!!

Participant: kingshmegland
Band: Presto Ballet
Song: The Mind Machine

A second long song I received this round. 'The Mind Machine' is a nice progressive track. It sounds like classic prog, but a bit heavier. It's pretty kick-ass all the way through and if the rest of their material is a bit alike, I'll have discovered a new band here once more!

Participant: Nekov
Band: Pure Reason Revolution
Song: Bullitts Dominae

I have no idea what 'Bullitts Dominae' are and neither does Google, but they make for a very punchy, yet catchy song. This song is all about the vocals in the verses and chorus but does it work or what? That explosion into the chorus is fantastic and overall this song has the great build-up a catchy radio friendly track should have, but it manages to sound nothing like anything you'll hear on the radio. Very interesting and I enjoyed it a lot.

Participant: jingle.boy
Band: Frameshift
Song: The Gene Machine

Hey, that's a familiar voice! I've never heard him on anything like this and he sounds absolutely awesome in the chorus, which then is instantly awesome as well, but the vocal lines in the verses are a bit lacking. But then there's that chorus again and everything is alright again. Although pretty straight-forward in essence, in the backgrounds it's pretty proggy and there's some really cool stuff going on in the various parts of the song. I've seen this bands name, usually combined with some others, more often on these forums, I'll have a look into them.

---

Where it became a little more difficult: ???

Participant: Lolzeez
Band: Penguin Cafe Orchestra
Song: The Sound of Someone You Love Who's Going Away And It Doesn't Matter

That was weird, but very enjoyable in a sense. Starting out really nice and smooth, the song gradually evolves into an atonal violin wankfest with computer noises in the background, before returning to that nice soothing intro melody again. Overall, I though this was a pretty cool track, but it could do with some trimming I guess. The idea is good and the execution of it is pretty flawless, but I don't think it has to be 10 minutes long. That said, listening to this track it didn't feel like it was 10 minutes long.

---

Unfortunately eliminated: :(

Participant: Onno
Band: Stick Men
Song: Nude Ascending Staircase

Sorry bud, but this was definitely and by far the weakest track of the bunch in this round. Being in instrumental track, it has to do quite a lot of cool, new, 'progressive' or interesting things to keep me interested throughout and this song failed to do that. Of course I don't mean to say that this track *doesn't* do the aforementioned things; in fact, I can imagine this band being awesome to see live if only for all the cool stuff they throw in this song, but it didn't really come across - to me - on record. I'm sorry, but you're out.

---

Drawing further on that: be careful with instrumentals. This round I received two and they ended in the last two places. I sometimes really like instrumentals, but it's hard to pinpoint what makes me like some and not others.

Deadline for your Round 3 Submissions is TUESDAY 23:00 GMT (17:00 EST)

This gives you two days to select stuff and if I have them by then I can probably get some listening done on Wednesday or burn some tracks to a CD for in the car. As said at the beginning of this post, I'm going to have a busy week and I won't be home a lot, so I'm not sure when I can give you the results. Friday at the earliest, but Sunday is more likely.

Frameshift has 2 albums.  JLB is on the first - and is awesome on it; Sebastian Bach on the 2nd - and is AWESOME on it.  The 2nd is much darker and heavier.  Both are awesome though.

Will be sending shortly.

Me too, a lot. It's a fun way to run a roulette, when every round could be your last.

Anyhow, I'm going to start taking a different approach now...

Despite my posting and semi-randomised moments during the past few days, I have barely been home at all (most were done from my phone when travelling). I managed to get one listen in from every song yesterday evening, but so far I've not had any time to listen to them more often. I'm sorry, I've been really busy. I hope I can get the results in in the first half of the next week. They'll be here on Wednesday at the latest. Again, sorry for stalling, but it's partly beyond my own control.

Title: Re: Elite's Roulette v. 2 - Round 4 Results
Post by: Elite on September 11, 2013, 04:15:00 PM
So, my excuses for the very late results for this round. As I've said before, I've been very busy for the past week. I'm pretty busy in general anyways, but last week was yet another extreme exception. I did however get to listen to every song multiple times and here are your results for them. There wasn't really a standout track like in previous rounds, but nevertheless, I got some fine music from you guys, so thanks! Now, results:

Straight on through to the next round: :D

Participant: Nekov
Band: Galleon
Song: Engines of Creation

What a fine progressive metal song. Nothing bad about it at all, but nothing really noteworthy either. Kind of middle-of-the-road, yet very solid. The chorus is pretty cool though and the short guitar breaks that pop up everywhere in the song are pretty awesome as well. Just a solid submission, really!

Participant: jingle.boy
Band: Dec Burke
Song: Small Hours

Well, you have yet to disappoint me with any submission. This was another very good pick. Again, it's mainly the chorus that makes this song worthwhile, although the entire sound of this song makes me want to hear more from this band (or man; is 'Dec Burke' a name?). I'll go listen to the whole album if I ever have time, because this was really pretty awesome.

Participant: kingshmegland
Band: Rocket Scientists
Song: Revolution Road

Progressive metal with some random eastern influences, yay! Why the hell not? Another really solid pick from you as well, but nothing really stood out on this track. I'm curious to see what you'll bring to the table next round.

Where it became a little more difficult: ???

Participant: Lolzeez
Band: Yo La Tengo
Song: Ohm

Here's a warning for you; another one of those weird picks and you're out next round, because the three players above you have delivered nothing but awesomeness for the past 4 rounds, while you've been floating closely to the exit for the past 3. I'll say that this song was quite okay though, with a couple of memorable lines here and there, but mostly it sounded like 7 minutes of 'the same' to me, which is not really a good feat. That said, the song did engage me in a way, so you may stay for another round.

---

Unfortunately eliminated: :(

Participant: senecadawg2
Band: The Antlers
Song: Sylvia

I thank you for your detailed description of what the song is about, but frankly, if I can't hear what the singer is saying, because the whole sound of the song is deliberately muffled, I don't give a damn what he's saying. And that's my biggest, and probably only, gripe with this 'indie rock' of these days. Bands that deliberately make their songs sound 'bad' for the sake of doing that. There's nothing 'authentic' about it, it's just very annoying to me. I've yet to hear a band using this 'sound' that I do like. I'm sorry, you sent me some amazing stuff in previous rounds, but this song, or anything sounding similar would have killed anyone off in my Roulette. I'm sorry for kicking you out on a song you admittedly love and I admire you for taking a risk, but you couldn't have known my dislike for indie rock. Still, the rules of my roulette force me to say it's the end for you here. Thanks for playing and thanks for the cool stuff you've sent!

---

Deadline for your Round 5 Submissions is FRIDAY 23:00 GMT (17:00 EST)

Fogey's unite.  Let's take Genezeez down.

FYI, it's Declan Burke (name of the individual).  He's the guitarist and vocalist for Frost*'s second album, along with Darwin's Radio.  His two solo albums are very nice.  And, he's fronting a new project - Brave New Sky - which includes Richard West (Threshold; keys) and Simon Andersson (Darkwater/PoS; guitars).

Have to narrow down my selection.  Will send tomorrow sometime.

Post by: Elite on September 15, 2013, 04:06:18 PM
Well, you see, there's somebody here I have to disappoint. But I'm sure he won't mind, he made it to the top 4 in this roulette of death, which is something worth noting in itself. Still, the best three have to go on. We say goodbye to one of our beloved participants tonight, here's the results:

Straight on through to the next round: :D

Participant: Nekov
Band: Karmakanic
Song: 1969

Comparing the whole lot of different music I have received in this roulette is pretty difficult, since even within prog the differences between bands can be pretty huge (listen to this song, then to Elinoire by Flaming Row and you'll know what I mean). Still, I think I can safely say that this is one of the songs I enjoyed the most in this whole roulette. I've seen the name Karmakanic mentioned quite often on DTF (mostly by the same people; I suppose you know who you are), but I think I should join this clan. This band is going right up on the to-listen-to-list. Awesome!

Participant: jingle.boy
Band: Magnus Karlsson's Free Fall
Song: Not My Saviour

You sure know many power/prog bands, don't you? Damn, that was another fine example of a band that knows how to employ every instruments to its best capabilities. A very nice and very good rocking tune. Nothing bad about this at all, but I can imagine getting myself burned out on this if the rest of the album would be more of the same. Still, every bandmember here is on fire and it turns into a fantastic song with a great chorus to boot.

Participant: kingshmegland
Band: Jolly
Song: Joy

You said this was a rather new band on the scene right? The music speaks to me like they're not. This band surely knows what they're doing and their craft is reflected in what is yet another awesome song sent by you. Everything checks out here. The only downside to me was that the vocals are a bit muffled into the rest of the mix; they don't really stand out in any way. Then again, that probably how they want it to sound and it works, so hey, why bother?

Unfortunately eliminated: :(

Participant: Lolzeez
Band: Television
Song: Marquee Moon

I saw Big Hath's write-up for this song earlier today, I think you conveniently sent both of us the same song (like jingly did), but my feelings towards this song are a little similar as his. I just don't get this, at all, and in a round with 3 awesome prog/rock/metal/whatever pieces, some random and uninteresting guitar riffing with weird, almost screeched vocals over it simply isn't going to cut it. Like I said in senecadawg's write-up last round, I can really appreciate anyone taking risks in Roulettes and in any roulette that would be fine, but not in a roulette where it's either in or out and you could have guessed I wouldn't really enjoy this. Well, thanks for playing anyway! You were up against some very good players, yet you have stayed in until the top 4! But now, it's time for you to leave. I don't really like saying this, being a young person myself, but in this case; leave it to the fogeys.

---

Deadline for your Round 6 Submissions is TUESDAY 23:00 GMT (17:00 EST)

You may now continue the bitching. Or don't, that's up to you.

Oh, and some information:

For the two players making it past round 6, the rules for round 7 will be slightly different. Since there will be only two players left then, each participant must send me a total of 3 songs, but with the total running time under 30 minutes. Whoever sends the best batch of songs then wins. No bands may be reused, although you may send the same band more than once in the final round. So use this to your knowledge before sending :)

Yeah, it's called 'knowing your audience'.  If I sent the songs from this roulette to you Lolz... you'd rank them just as low.  Everyone has a different purpose for a roulette... some want to be introduced to new styles/genres, some just want more awesome music of what they already love.  Rich seems to be leaning towards the latter here.

Diego... you'll be tasting something of mine after this round alright - but it won't be tears.

Great new music to choose from indeed!

Well, here we are, just three men left. Three men who have sent me amazing stuff throughout, but one of them is going down now. Let's see what they sent, shall we?

ROUND & RESULTS:

Participant: jingle.boy
Artist: Dimension Act
Song: Drawing the Lines of Mortal Existence

Wow, I hadn't received a 30+ minute song in my roulette before, but I never stated anywhere that you weren't allowed to send long songs and I did get a couple pretty long ones, but this one trumped them all. Overall, this was a pretty great progressive metal pieces. Divided into six tracks, the song had a lot of distinctive sections and was filled with amazing guitar work, nice and catchy melodies and good singing. I really enjoyed that, but it was quite a lot to take in. Given that this was basically half of the album it came from, I think I can safely say I would enjoy the rest of it too.

Participant: Nekov
Artist: Agents of Mercy
Song: A Quiet Little Town

I still haven't really listened to the Flower Kings, but they've been on my list for ages. I went through a couple of their albums briefly and found them rather bland overall (I'm sorry fans, but I didn't really pay attention anyway..). This here is different and shows a different side of Roine Stolt. I loved his work in Transatlantic and here the man shows he's capable of creating some really good music. Another one to go after, some great progressive rock here.

Participant: kingshmegland
Artist: Big Big Train
Song: Judas Unrepentant

The first thing that came to mind when hearing this was England. This song sounds like it came right off the English countryside and was awesome all the way through. I love how this band managed to create a fairly complex song that can still be reminiscent of lots of other stuff, remain attractive AND be very memorable. I'll be sure to check out the other stuff this band has done, for I must admit, I really enjoyed this!

The result:
As you can see in the write-ups, I liked every single song here, which makes it pretty difficult to vote off anyone here, since there's not really a song here that truly stands out as being less good than the others. I'm fairly sure my favourite this rond was Judas Unrepentant, so kingshmegland gets through to the finals. Then it's a toss-up between the other two tracks, but going back through them today, the 30 minute epic progressive metal piece speaks to me a bit more than the Swedish progressive rock. I'm sorry, I hate to say this Nekov, but the roulette ends here for you. Thanks very much for playing and for the awesome music you've sent me! :)

THE FINAL ROUND: (Submissions due FRIDAY 23:00 GMT (17:00 EST)
To the two people in the finals:
- exactly 3 songs
- maximum length of the three combined is 30 minutes
- you may send more than one song by the same band, but not reuse any band sent already in this roulette
- the best batch of songs wins
- Results will be here next Wednesday evening, since I'm floored with work and stuff to do until then

King... you going down faster than a hobo on a Big Mac!

Rich... The other three tracks on the album are killer too.  You will enjoy... Just wait for the inevitable Thanksgiving (November) sale at the label's website (therecordlabel.net). I got that album for $3 I think.

Title: Re: Elite's Roulette v. 2 - FINAL RESULTS
Post by: Elite on October 02, 2013, 05:14:31 PM
Warning: this is an incoherent post.

First of all - and I know this is not going to be read by everybody who has played in this roulette, since it did get out of hand slightly and took longer than intended - I want to thank everybody in here for playing. It was a fun way of doing a roulette with elimination, but for the coming year, I'm not going to do something as intensive as a roulette. I barely have enough time to post on the forums, let alone listen to whole batches of new music and write stuff about them. Prioritising gets in the way and there's unfortunately for my free time a lot of stuff I (have to) do. With the launch of my band's first demo looking around the corner, writing my bachelor thesis for my musicology studies and being a full time member in the university's council, as well as having friends to tend to, I simply don't have the time for this. Add to that that I have basically NO free time starting tomorrow morning (well, I'm going to ProgPower this weekend all right.. ), that means I MUST churn out the results now, or else they'll be here next Tuesday at the earliest.

I would like to have both of you win, since both of you sent me awesome music throughout, a lot of which I will delve into further, but since jingly especially is so adamant about making choices and standing up for it, I'm going for the sole winner here. I'm not going to make this a long-ass story with huge write-ups, but just be honest about this. Last week was so ridiculously busy that I didn't listen to your songs as often as I probably should, but I'm sticking with my gut here and the listens I did get in (I admit, only 2) were good enough for me to give an impression, and hopefully an honest decision. So, here were the songs sent:

Chad sent me:
Amaran's Plight - Coming of Age
Echoes - Rude Awakening
Soul Secret - Aftermath

And Joe sent me:
Mystery - Pride
Echolyn - The End if Beautiful
Darwin's Radio - Breathe It In

I got a round full of progressive metal goodness and I enjoyed every single song here a lot. I'm not going to do a detailed review of every song, like I did in previous rounds, but I'm just going to rank the songs individually. While the Mystery, Echolyn and Echoes songs were more than alright, it's the remaining three songs that completely blew my mind. That Darwin's Radio track is insane (how is that band completely unknown everywhere?) and the Amaran's Plight and Soul Secret track were absolutely amazing, especially the latter. I'd rank them like this:

6. Echoes - Rude Awakening
5. Echolyn - The End Is Beautiful
4. Mystery - Pride
3. Amaran's Plight - Coming of Age
2. Darwin's Radio - Breath It In
1. Soul Secret - Aftermath

Now, you can do all kinds of weird things with this ranking, but overall, the Soul Secret song was the one I enjoyed most of all. Hell, you could add points for every track, where the 6th place would net 1 point, 5th place two etc. and that would mean jingle.boy has 11 points and kingshmegland has 10, but since I didn't work with points for the entire roulette, I'm going with my gut feeling (backed up with a sloppy display of point-giving) and say jingle.boy won my roulette. You sent the best batch of songs in this round and you sent me amazing stuff throughout. I thank you, very much. And I thank the runner-up too, because he wouldn't be here if he didn't give me some amazing stuff as well.

I'm a bit sorry for announcing the final results in such a random way, especially since I made notice of actually writing down stuff about the tracks in previous rounds. It's partly me being tired, it's partly me being glad it's over and I can put an end to this, knowing I've been completely spoiled with cool music and hoping everybody has enjoyed the ride. It'll be a while before I'll start a roulette again, because it is actually pretty time-consuming, even me typing out this incoherent story now.

To finish this post; I want to thank everybody for playing once more and as something from me to, I'm going to give you some music you have never heard before. My band is releasing a demo next Friday; check the Musicians section in due time. It's about the best I can do to people with such superior music libraries :lol

Once more, thanks a lot for playing, thanks for the friendly competition, thanks for all the music sent and:

Congratulations jingle.boy

Regards,

 Richard / Elite

Yay!!! I'm at long last back in the victory column. Rich, this was a very well run roulette, especially given how busy you've been lately. I'm humbled to have outwitted and outlasted the competition. When Joe told me what he sent, I knew it would ultimately come down to whether you preferred "heavy" prog, or "medium" prog, as his three tracks were dy-no-MITE!  The only noticeable difference being mine were slightly heavier.

All participants deserve a  :tup.  And as usual, the real winner is the organizer, who now has a ton of new music to discover and enjoy.

Chad and I sent each others songs to each other and I really dug  Amaran's Plight - Coming of Age & Soul Secret - Aftermath.

Congrats to Jingle for winning this and for sending Soul Secret - even though I've been out for a while, I was still following. Pillars of Sand is still the best Soul Secret song though ;)

I must admit; all of the songs were awesome. Pretty cool that you guys sent each other the songs as well! Yeah, I guess I'm more into heavier prog than mellow prog (although I can enjoy both very much!). Both batches were amazing and I had a great time running this roulette :)

As promised, my band's first demo (because, hey, a little self-promotion for a prog band isn't bad right ;p ):
