Title: Scale the Summit
Post by: Perpetual Change on July 28, 2009, 05:30:11 PM
Sorry... I didn't see a topic on this so I figured I'd start one.

Got the album today, and I have to say it's fantastic. Imagine and instrumental version of BtBaM's "Colors," and that's pretty much what you have. Can't wait to see 'em Friday now.

So happy these guys are playing instead of Spock's Beardfish.  Really good stuff.

I prefer Beardfish, but I have the latest from these guys and it kicks pretty much ass, so I'll be happy to see them too.

I'm sold.
Only part of Colors that I don't like is the vocals :P

It's a shame because the vocalists clean voice is really fantastic.

Just had a listen to these guy's, i'm suitably impressed. But I think I prefer Unexpect from the ProgNation perspective.

I love how they add some melody to the traditional instrumental prog metal, which many other similar bands cannot do (Planet X).

I've been listening to them more and more, I'm actually really psyched to see them now. :caffeine:

holy fail, batman. i only ever listened to their last album a small number of times, but im certain i gave it enough listens that i can confidently state it does not sound like colors sans vox.

and while i did enjoy their set(s) during prognation, they certainly didnt warrant me purchasing tix to two shows 800 miles apart...spock's beardfish, however, did justify said multi-purchase.  :sadpanda:

Listen, n00b; when I made this thread a year and a half ago, both bands were relatively new to me. Maybe I thought they were more similar sounding then they actually are, but there''s definitely a similarity.

Cool to see they're doing new stuff.

I only listened to is once, briefly. Thoughts are here:

Scale the Summit- The Collective: It's just as good as the first two records-- because it is just about the first two records. It's nice sounding as always, but not particularly interesting to my ears. Over the past three records Scale the Summit have spammed us with nice-sounding, echo-y, delay-drowned riffs in 6/8 and semi-clean guitar solos. It's really time for something else now. I don't know. I hate to hate on such a group of cool 'working band' kinda guys, but they really need to mix things up next time.

After a few listens, I still prefer Carving Desert Canyons to The Collective. Will see if my opinion changes over time.

I'm gonna have to disagree.  I'm on my second listen of The Collective right now, and really feel that their music has taken on a darker tone in parts.

I have a hard time listening to one of their whole albums. There might be a bit of a difference sonically between albums but there isn't really that much variety on each album.

But that's all okay! Because live their fantastic and I couldn't possibly get bored listening to them there.

One thing I noticed about Redwoods is something I don't notice about too many STS songs.

So Pat the drummer and I met in Calgary on the PN09 tour, and have kept in contact ever since and started a good friendship, he messaged me on facebook, telling me they should have room on the guest list, and if I wanted to do photography for them when they come to Vancouver :)

Narrow Silent seems ok. Not digging the "djenty" () influence at the start there. Sounds like the Scale the summit i was expecting but with some pretty interesting guitar parts.
based on the other songs we've heard sounds like it's going to be more promising than the last. I still think Carving Desert Canyons is their go to album (most seem to disagree with me on that though :blush), although i think this could top all of them.

It's out there...

Edit: Just finished my first listen. Seriously amazing album. I see it potentially beating The Collective as my favorite StS album after a few listens. It certainly seems to be more diverse than anything they've done before.

Of the songs I haven't heard yet, Willow really stands out. Unbelievably good track. Probably their darkest song. The Olive Tree is amazing as well.

9.5/10

I usually find instrumental metal albums quite boring, and I pretty much always find myself wanting vocals after a few tracks. I have to say though, The Migration is seriously kicking my ass, it's so good! Seems to be about the right length too for this kinda stuff.  :metal
Title: Re: Scale the Summit
Post by: Nel on July 09, 2013, 12:09:46 PM
So after spending a while listening to The Migration... I'd say The Collective is better. Heck, even Carving Desert Canyons. I don't know, this new one just feels like a step back. Still good though, but quite a few of the songs just feel like the directionless noodling they'd do a lot on the first two albums, instead of something that felt like it was fully realized. And there weren't really any moments that stuck out to me like the numerous ones on TC or the Glacial Planet solo on CDC.

To be fair though, it took me months to really get into The Collective, so this one may take a while to sink in too.
Title: Re: Scale the Summit
Post by: (nothing) on August 26, 2013, 06:25:33 PM
Ok so I've been listening to The Migration non-stop for about 2 weeks now. I've been following the band since Carving Desert Canyons came out (actually found out about them when they were participated in Progressive Nation). They're all amazing dudes (met them in 2010 when they were touring with Between The Buried And Me).

At this point, The Collective is probably one of my Top 10 favorite albums of all time. And I listen to a loooooot of music, like literally almost everything from hip-hop, jazz and electronic music to hardcore and progressive metal. Not even kidding about that record being this good. It just achieves a balance of technicality, darkness and emotion that a few other records do, in my opinion.

So obviously the bar was set pretty f'in high. The Migration is good but in my opinion not as good as The Collective. This doesn't mean it's not a good record. In fact, it's awesome and some songs are among their best. It's also funny because for many people "The Olive Tree" is the best song on the record while I can barely listen to it, it just sounds really forced to me and the thing with the volume pedal in the beginning just puts me off. It's the only song I skip constantly whenever I listen to the album. Anyway, that being said, "Atlas Novus" is so far the best track of this year for me while there are definitely some more "classics" on this one, most notably "Oracle" and "The Traveler". Overall, it's a very good album, just not as good as the previous one in my opinion.  ;D

I saw Scale the Summit a few weeks ago in NY.  It's the third or fourth time I've seen them in the past year.  They've really played here a lot.  Anyway, having seen them to much now, I started to wonder why the bassist is center stage and Chris is positioned off to the side.  From my perspective, he seems to be "the guy" in STS and is marketed more than any other band member.  He has a solo album, guitar books, YouTube videos, etc.  If you ask me, it makes sense for him to be center stage instead of the bassist.  I get that they want to book-end the two guitarists on stage, but if the band is going to market Chris to such a degree then he should be front and center, in my opinion.  Anyone agree/disagree?

In an Instrumental band, does that really matter?

Their setup to me it makes sense, guitar is at both left and right, bass and drums in the middle, it makes for a good sonic sound.

They all move on stage, it's not like they are stuck in that spot and can't move around.

I suppose not.  I think it came to mind after seeing Animals as Leaders and noticing Tobin was front and center.  Made me wonder why STS doesn't do it, since Chris seems to play most of the solos and is the main guy.  He stayed off to the side at all three shows I saw.  Not a big deal, just a thought.

From their FB page yesterday:

An update...we have parted ways with our drummer Pat Skeffington. Pat is a fantastic drummer and will be greatly missed. We wish him the absolute best in the future!
Moving forward, we’d like to officially welcome J.C. Bryant as the new drummer for Scale The Summit. We just finished drum tracking for the new album this past weekend and can’t wait for everyone to hear the songs! Get excited! New album coming SUMMER 2015!

Is Scale the Summit just slowly becoming Tetrafusion?  :lol That two times now that a band member has left and been replaced by someone in Tetrafusion.

Pat and I were good buddies, so I'm majorly bummed. But JC seems to kill it so I hope he brings his A game to this album and fills Pat's shoes nicely!

From their Facebook again:

Our new shreddin' album will be titled "V", due out this summer via Prosthetic Records. We wrapped up the recording process a few days ago and now will have the amazing Jamie King mix this bad boy. Can't put into words how excited we are about this material! Artwork reveal coming soon!

I think this will make about five or six bands in my collection that have titled their fifth album V.

Haha, I was thinking the same thing when I saw that update. Looking forward to the album though, the last one was incredible!

Loving this stuff so far. J.C is filling in nicely and I'm loving the production on the album. Tough to say if it'll top Migration for me, but so far it sounds promising!

New album's great. Not quite as good as The Migration but a killer record for sure.

In an unbelievable feat, I heard an album in the same year it was released! V is really fantastic. I don't know that it'll top The Migration, but I guess we'll see.

So I guess Scale The Summit's down to just Chris now. Mark and J.C. bolted because he couldn't afford to pay them, which other people are saying is b.s. And now people on their reddit and some folks who've had to work at their shows are... not saying very nice things about him.

On the other hand... Tetrafusion is posting again... so...  :metal

Whole situation just seems unpleasant and confusing right now though.

Chris seems to have indeed done a very shitty thing.

I guess he feels like him being able to live nicely off STS is better than 4 guys being able to make some money off it while having to do other things as well.

I happened to notice on Facebook that Pat was pointing out that there was only one original member left now and that there is good reason for that. Too bad.

I suddenly don't feel so bad about never getting around to buying Chris' solo album. I always thought they were a tight-knit group. This is really disappointing.

Also, I love how he asked for Mark Michell to back him up on his side of the story in the official statements and Mike didn't even bother. Ouch.

I'm pretty tight with pretty much all of them, except for Chris. He always gave off a vibe of he's better than everyone and was really high on himself, so I never really tried to get close with him. This honestly didn't come as a huge surprise after the way I saw the band react with each other in the past few times I've spent time with them and I'm happy it's starting to come to light. Chris is an undeniable talent, but a shady and manipulative person, and now I can't wait to see what the other guys do next.

One thing that always gave me a weird feeling about Chris was the shirtless selfies he'd occasionally post of himself flexing in the mirror on Facebook and Instagram, both of which he uses to correspond with fans.  I know he's into fitness, but it still struck me as a bit vain, especially considering he's married and a large number of his followers are probably guys.  Also, I feel like he rarely smiles in photos.

Unfortunately this just spoils the band for me, as it highlights something that has always seemed missing from their music, and that is an emotional "center" rooted in human experience. Chris has always been a really impressive player, and I've always liked how StS seem to pay tribute to natural wonders and the like. But, like others, I've noticed the same thing from Chris' social media presence. Constant bragging about himself, bragging about the things he has, and the things he's able to do. Using social media to constantly promote himself and display his vannity, or show off the cool places he's visiting.

Enough's enough. Where I used to here technically impressive music that is designed to match the wonders of the world, I now just hear a showoff drawing inspiration from things and places because he can't bother to be emotionally invested in others. Harsh, maybe. But the last few weeks have given me such a sour impression of Chris, to the extent where I might not be able to enjoy Scale the Summit at all anymore.

Didn't know anything about this band's personal dynamics until now.

I like some of their music but a lot of it seems too calculated.

I saw Chris reply to a fan's concerns about the lineup changes by saying "members leave/quit/get fired from bands all the time and as long as the main songwriter is still there, nothing is over."  To me, that's a dangerous way of thinking.  Fans get attached to lineups.  To think you can just replace people and not have it affect success is a miscalculation, in my opinion.  As band leader, it's important to communicate with your band members and make sure they are all happy and on the same page.  Chris is giving off a big Geoff Tate vibe.

Yeah, Chris isn't really coming off well in most of this.

Oh well. It doesn't really affect my enjoyment of their music.

Reposting info from the album release topic. Despite the stuff that went down in October/November, the band's carrying on with album number six, In A World Of Fear, out May 19th, though I think it's just Chris, a drummer he hired, and a slew of guests. Not sure how I feel about wanting to buy it or not, but the shirts and stuff look as cool as ever.

New album came out. I'm actually digging it with the vocals. I wasn't a fan of them because they were kind of too technical for my ears, kind of like Animals as Leaders. This album is more melodic on the music and I'm quite enjoying that.

I didn't even know there was a new album but this is welcome news. I'll check the album out in a few days. Glad to hear it's more melodic. I like STS but I really have to be in a particular mood to listen to them.

Same here. I like them....but it's gotta be the right mood and time. Just not a pop them on and listen kind of thing.

The vocals are a game changer for those that did not connect with their technical instrumentals.  Check out my review below.

Really digging the new release with the vocals. I'd be thrilled if they kept this approach moving forward.
