Title: theseoafs' Song Roulette 2 v. TRAPPED INSIDE THIS EIGHTAVARIUM
Post by: theseoafs on July 27, 2013, 03:02:07 PM
Hi guys!  It's time for my second roulette.  Here's (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=32995.0) a link to the first one.

1)  Anyone is welcome to participate.  Fuck invites.  I'm shooting for 7 participants total.  Make yourself known in this thread if you would like to play.  I'm thinking 5 or 6 rounds total, so you've got to be able to commit to that.
2)  Submission periods will probably be 24 or 48 hours long, so you've got to be sure to stop by DTF every day or so if you want to stay in the game.
3)  I like lots of different types of music, but I'm a classic rock guy at heart.  I'm also a progger and a metalhead.  I don't want to shoehorn myself into a box where I don't quite fit, so I'm not going to give you a list of artists whose music I am familiar with; that tends to encourage people to suggest me songs they think I will like, which never works out well for anyone.  Because I can't have people sending me stuff I'm already familiar with, you are free to send me more than one song in submissions.  For example,

Quote
My first choice for this round is song A; if you're familiar with A, then use B for this round, please.

In this case, if I'm not familiar with song A, I'll take it as your submission for the round and then you're free to use B in later rounds.  Basically, don't think about what I would like, just send me music that you think is really good, and everyone will be happier.  Youtube and Grooveshark and Spotify links are all fine.
4)  All rounds have wager-based scoring.  Everyone will start out with 50 points; during each round, each participant will wager a certain number of their points.  I'll then rank each song.  Players whose songs get ranked above-average (above 4th place if there are 7 players, etc.) will win their wagers, while players whose songs get ranked below-average (below 4th place with 7 players) will lose their wagers.  (If there are an odd number of participants, then the one in the middle [4th place for 7 players] wins no points.)  There may be opportunities for bonus points along the way too.  You can specify different wagers for different songs.  For example,

Quote
My first choice for this round is song A, which I'd like to wager 25 points on.  If you know A, use B, but I'm only wagering 10 points on that one.

No elimination on a round-by-round basis, except that any player who runs out of points will be removed from the game immediately.
5)  No round themes.  No restrictions on genre or song length, with two caveats:  a) a song will not be viewed as better simply because it's longer, e.g. a short song that is strong all the way through will score higher than a long song that I think tends to fluctuate in quality, and b) you are free to send in metal songs with growls, though I will probably not score them well.  I'm fine with other types of harsh vocals usually but I prefer actual singing.

...And that should be it!  First 7 people to post get a spot in the roulette and 50 points to start out with.  I'll formally announce the first round after everyone's registered, though you can start preparing your submissions now because there will be no restrictions.

Players:
1. Scorpion - 50
1. Elite - 50
1. Lolzeez - 50
1. Shadow Ninja - 50
1. Lonestar - 50
1. Dr. DTVT - 50
1. jingle.boy - 50

You know what happened the last time we faced off against each other in a roulette? Exactly. That's gonna happen again.

Should have results posted before I go to sleep tonight.  I will say now, though, that this will not be an easy ranking.  These songs are all very strong, and I'm going to have to take points away from people that don't deserve it.

ROUND 1 RESULTS

In reverse order (starting with the worst), my rankings are as follows:

7. Scorp's submission: Dog Fashion Disco - Desert Grave:  This is pretty good.  Really atmospheric, with a folksy and kind of pseudo-Latin vibe at times.  The soft outro is pretty fantastic.  While there's nothing wrong with this one, it couldn't stack up against the others.

6. Lolz's submission: King Crimson - One More Red Nightmare:  I am ashamed by two things:  1) I know so little King Crimson that it could be used in this roulette (I only picked up the debut a few weeks ago, actually), and 2) there were enough strong songs in this round that this wonderful tune had to be pushed down to 6th place.  Love that verse/chorus, though the instrumental section didn't exactly have me captivated all the way through.  Ugh, so embarrassing that a KC song is in this spot.  I'm embarrassed.  Let's move on.

Now this next one was the tricky part -- the song that gets 5th place loses points, while the song in 4th place doesn't.  This is a real shame because I really enjoyed both songs, but this is the way the cookie crumbles, I guess.  Anyway:

5. Ninja's submission:  The Ocean - Mesopelagic: Into the Uncanny:  Another metal entry from 2013.  As always, very impressive instrumentation, though I wasn't so taken with the composition itself as I was with the Soilwork song.  Cool, catchy verses and choruses, though not especially memorable in the way the top placing songs were.  Still very good on the whole though.

4.  jingle's submission:  Karnya - Flooding Blood:  Pretty fantastic prog metal tune.  Manages to cover a lot of musical ground in 6 minutes, and is consistently enjoyable.  Love those vocals -- a little Hetfield-ish, don't you think?  Actually, I got a Metallica vibe from the whole song, like prog-tallica or something.  Maybe I'm just tired.  I don't know.  Anyway, this song wins 4th place not for any specific reason, but just because I happened to enjoy it a little bit more on the whole.  Mesopelagic was great but it loses points, while this one doesn't.  Unfair, eh?

3.  doc's submission: Soilwork - This Momentary Bliss: Great stuff.  Not much to say about this one except for that -- wonderful intro, and a great, catchy verse and chorus.  Pretty concise, too, which is good; people tend to go for the epics in roulettes, which is fine, but sometimes a good, classic, 4-minute metal song is good too.

2. elite's submission: Enchant - Paint the Picture: My first thought, of course, was "hey, this really sounds like Xanadu".  The Xanadu-riff is repeated fairly often in the song, but luckily we quickly move on to other, less Rush-y soundscapes.  The atmospheric verse, driven by a kickass bassline, is pretty sweet, and gives way to an incredibly catchy chorus in 3 ("escape your oppressor, transgress your transgressor").

1. chef's submission: Shineback - Rise Up Forgotten, Return Destroyed: Fuck yeah, this is what I'm talking about.  An interesting, groovy, metal composition, with fantastic instrumentation to boot.  There's a nice little a cappella part in the middle to provide some contrast, and the song concludes with an "I love you".  I love you too, Rise Up Forgotten, Return Destroyed.  I love you too.

.... So, there we go.  The standings:

1. Lonestar - 50 + 20 = 70
2. DTVT - 50 + 5 = 55
2. Elite - 50 + 5 = 55
4. jingle - 50 + 0*15 = 50
5. Ninja - 50 - 10 = 40
6. Scorp - 50 - 15 = 35
7. Lolz - 50 - 25 = 25  (I'm so sorry.)

Interestingly, DTVT and Elite bet pretty conservatively.  The highest bet was lolzeez's, who is in last place now despite having submitted a really awesome song.  C'est la vie.  Round 2 starts now.  Try to submit your next tune in the next 24 hours if you can (by the end of the day tomorrow).

Sweet man, knew that would click. Seriously check out the album, it's probably one of the best I've come across in a long time.

(after hearing the whole album and getting the concept, the "I Love You" takes on a whole new meaning btw...)

Ahh, Chad, sending Karnya, huh? That's fucking bold bro.... I see how it's gonna be in this one...

ROUND 2 RESULTS

Last round, I was consistently impressed with the quality of all the songs I received.  This time, not so much.  Let's start with the worst.

7.  Shadow Ninja's submission:  Gotthard - Lift You Up:  The Ninja took a chance with this positively boring pop song.  It did not pay off.

6.  Chef's submission:  Absolute Priority - Fear of the Night:  Here's the upset.  This one didn't really speak to me.  Sort of plodding and slow, with a drawn-out bombastic ending that would be epic if I enjoyed the music a bit more.  I dunno.  The vocalist is pretty good.  Is it just me, or does he really sound like (young) Geoff Tate?  I was legitimately convinced this was a mid-80's Geoff Tate side project for a good portion of this song. :lol

5.  Lolz's submission:  Cult of Luna - I, The Weapon:  Mr. L told me I should give this one at 3 listens with breaks in between.  Sort of a hefty request given this song is 10 minutes long, but I did manage to get 2 listens in.  Truth time: on my first listen, I was ready to turn it off about a minute in because I found the song so tremendously ugly.  But my noble duty as a roulette judge is to listen to these songs, so I powered through.  By minute 5, I'd changed my tune, and was greatly enjoying what I was hearing... and then, by minute 10, I was a bit more sour.  Cult of Luna is a doomy, progressive, and talented band, but this song was not my cup of tea.  At college, occasionally my roommate puts on recordings of Philip Glass's compositions.  Philip Glass is a modern composer that also relies on very repetitive song structures.  I understand Philip Glass and the musical techniques he used, but I don't care for his music.  I responded to Cult of Luna in a similar way:  I understand what they're going for from an artistic standpoint, and it makes tremendous sense to me why people would like this music, but I just don't, personally.  Lolzeez will lose points, but if it's any consolation, I respect your band artistically.

And now, the really good stuff:

4.  Scorp's submission:  Devin Townsend - Bad Devil:  This was actually an alternate; Scorp's first choice was Lucy Fears the Morning Star by Diablo Swing Orchestra, a band I'm already familiar with.  (That's actually lucky for him, since I don't much care for that song.)  Anyway, this song was a lot of fun.  The deep "devil" voice was an interesting conceit, and it gives way to a melodic chorus whose swing metal sound is familiar without being cliche or uninteresting.

3.  Elite's submission:  Wishbone Ash - Sometime World:  How have I not heard of this band before?  This is some awesome early prog rock.  The opening ballad transitions masterfully into a fantastic Yes-style jam.  Love that bass.

2.  jingle's submission:  Dimension Act - Illusion/Counterparts:  Expertly crafted high-energy prog metal.  ... Sorry if this makes any of our participants angry.

1.  Doc's submission: Leprous - Bilateral:  The PhD snags the top spot this time with this chaotic progressive metal masterpiece.

New standings:
1. DTVT - 55 + 10 = 65
1. Elite - 55 + 10 = 65
1. jingle - 50 + 15 = 65
4. Lonestar - 70 - 30 = 40
5. Scorp - 35 + 0*10 = 35
6. Ninja - 40 - 10 = 30
7. Lolz - 25 - 10 = 15

3-way tie for 1st, interesting.  Lonestar made a big, risky bet which did not pay off -- but it's nothing he can't recover from.  Lolzeez, meanwhile, may be eliminated soon if he doesn't step up his game.

Round 3 starts now -- maybe try to get your submissions in by tomorrow evening?

Then how do you explain this:

Leprous - Bilateral

Emphasis on DATE and ALBUM.

If they were your baby you would have had that album 2 years ago.  *extends arm, drops mic, walks away*

ProgPower Europe 2010. Saw the band there, bought Tall Poppy Syndrome directly afterwards at the fest because they blew me away. Spoke with the whole band afterwards (do you want to see the signed booklet? I can upload a pic if you want..) the band put me on the guest-list for their next show in the Netherlands, I've been following them since.

I just never bought Bilateral until recently..

Now it's time for just straight out prog metal.

For the record, there's nothing wrong with classics.  I think the song that got 3rd place this time around is older than the KC song you sent last round.  Like I said, I'm a classic rock guy, mainly.  I just happened not to be an enormous fan of that particular King Crimson song (though, like I said, it was quite a good song).

It is indeed! Wishbone Ash's 'Argus' is from 1974, while King Crimson's 'Red' was released in 1974.

Oh, that's harsh! While Argus is indeed probably their best (it's my favourite for sure), they've also done some awesome other stuff. If you can ever get your hands on 'Tracks 3', which is a compilation set of 3 discs, try it out. Lots of awesome stuff on there as well! :)

Right...  that's the musical that Gary is in, when Spottswoode comes to recruit him?  I think I totally forgot that scene because the one right after that is where I got the biggest laughs ... <enter limosine>, "Jesus, this is a nice limo".  "Yes it is, now suck my cock". That's the real start of the debauchery for me.

The movie's pretty great, but that particular joke never fails to get a groan out of me.  I don't know, it was kind of... obvious?  As far as great one-liners go, I don't think I'll ever find the bit with the hammer unfunny.

Anyway, sorry, guys, but I think I'm going to take another day to listen to these songs and report back tomorrow evening.  For some reason, you guys all sent me stuff that was really obtuse and I don't feel like I've been able to wrap my head around any of them very well.  Another day to absorb the music will let me give fairer rankings and make everyone happier.  We're moving along pretty quickly so hopefully that's not a problem.

ARE YOU GUYS READY TO FUCKING ROCK??!??! IT'S RESULTS TIME

Okay, so like I said, the songs I got this time around were a little more on the complex, dark, and hard to digest side.  This made ranking the tunes pretty difficult, but I think I'm at a place where I know the songs pretty well and can judge them fairly.  For the next round, I'm going to place some additional restrictions so this doesn't happen again (I'll elaborate on that later).  However, now that I've had a chance to absorb them, I can report that I found all of these songs very good, which doesn't bode well for the people who submitted songs that were good but not quite as good as the others.  Anyway, here we go:

7.  Scorp's submission:  Helloween -- The Departed:  Some pretty cool classic-sounding metal.  Nothing too special, but it's appropriately catchy and I rather like the spoken-word bridge ("I would die for you, would you die for me?").

6.  Lolz's submission:  Riverside -- Escalator Shrine:  I've heard some Riverside before, but not this one.  I liked it.  Very Floyd.  It's also a very long song, and I'm not sure it warrants the length -- I was fully expecting the song to be over at the 7 minute mark when they hold out that power chord.  I wasn't particularly enthused when the drums came back in, which isn't the best sign for a roulette submission.

5.  Jingle's submission:  Echoes -- Rude Awakening: This one had to go down here, which is a shame, because I thought this song was very well-done.  Very talented musicians -- I particularly enjoyed the vocals, the chorus in particular being pretty awesome.  The songs which won places 4 through 1 were more consistently strong by my count.

4.  Elite's submission:  Beardfish -- South of the Border:  A lot of fun, this one.  Very Zappa.  Very, very Zappa.  I like Zappa so there's no problem there.  The story encouraged me to listen to the lyrics, which is pretty notable since I rarely pay attention to them.  Gotta love that hoedown-breakdown before the outro.  'CAUSE HE WAS GAYYYYYYY

3.  Ninja's submission:  Ark -- Burn the Sun:  Really damn tasty.  That bass solo, man.

2.  DTVT's submission:  Fair to Midland -- Dance of the Manatee:  This one has a really interesting sound.  Incredible vocals on the chorus.  That bridge ("the bigger they are, the harder they fall") kind of put me off at first, but I was singing (grunting?) along by the end of my first listen.  Fantastic submission.

1.  First place goes to Chef, with Disperse's Message from Atlantis.  Truly awesome stuff here.  I was captivated by every moment of this piece, from the fusion-esque verses to the arious harmonic-laden breakdowns, and that's what I'm judging you guys on, anyway: consistent strength.  I also love that I'm hearing so much interesting music from this year that I never would have heard otherwise, so thanks for that, guys.

Scoring!

1. DTVT - 65 + 20 = 85
2. Elite - 65 + 0*10 = 65
3. Lonestar - 40 + 15 = 55
4. jingle - 65 - 20 = 45
5. Ninja - 30 + 10 = 40
6. Scorp - 35 - 20 = 15
7. Lolz - 15 - 14 = 1

Alright, so round 4 starts now.  Special instructions for this round, so please pay attention:
1) Nothing over 10 minutes, please (preferably shorter).
2) I still haven't settled on how many rounds to do, so I'll leave it to you guys.  With your song and wager, please also tell me how many rounds you'd like this roulette to last (anywhere from four to... well, I guess there's no upper limit).  I'll go with whatever the majority says because we live in America.  I'll just decide for myself if there's a tie or the poll is otherwise inconclusive.

Alright, everybody's sent.  True story:  Lolz sent in a Mars Volta song (which, of course, I already know) and a Zappa song.  I haven't heard that particular Zappa song, and it seems sort of a weird choice since I talked about liking Zappa in my most recent write-up, but I'll go ahead and give it to him just to save everybody's time and money.

Alright guys, here are the results for round 4.  Sorry about that delay -- the good news is, it won't be happening again, since my summer internship is coming to a close and I'll have a lot more free time soon.  So we'll be able to continue at our quick pace immediately. :millahhhh  More news:  the majority of our players voted to play 8 rounds, which is more than I was planning, but it's what the people want, so what the hell.  8 rounds it is.

Alright, so I wasn't as into the submissions this time around.  The standouts were more clear, though, which means I get to finish this round with a clear conscience.

7. Ninja's submission:  Anthriel - Devil's Library:  Nope, this is not my kind of music.  I don't care for power metal at all.  This sounds exactly like Symphony X, which didn't bode well for Ninja, because I don't like Symphony X.  Maybe I should have hinted at that when I said I was familiar with the Symphony X song that Lolz sent me.  Oh well.  Anyway, speaking of Lolz...

6. Lolz's submission:  Frank Zappa - Willie the Pimp:  I said I liked Zappa before, and I think some of his music is pretty cool, but I didn't enjoy this song too much.  Kind of long and repetitive without offering me anything musically interesting to latch onto over the course of the closing 5-minute instrumental.

5. Scorp's submission:  Myrath - Silent Cries:  Scorpion apparently disobeyed my 10-minute rule.  Shame, shame.  This song was alright.  Interesting melodies, and the musicians are very talented, as one would expect from a prog-metal band.  The bassist's grooves in particular really impressed me.  However, I'm unsure the song's content warranted the extra length (especially considering that extra length was against the rules of the round).  At times, this one gets sort of slow and boring.

4.  DTVT's submission:  Amorphis - Silver Bride:  DTVT makes his first foray into sub-3rd place territory with this song, which I would call merely "good".  There are some catchy melodies (the chorus is kinda cool), but on the whole I just couldn't get into it.  Might have something to do with the vocalist, whom I didn't really care for.

3.  chef's submission:  Kingcrow - The Hatch:  This one is really cool.  A lot of very different sonic textures and ideas come together in a really satisfying way over the course of these 7 minutes.  I really love the chorus and its groovy drum beat, and the whispered section at 2:30 is really cool too.

2. Elite's submission:  Magic Pie - Endless Ocean:  Silly band name, great song.  Love the overall vibe and the vocal harmonies especially.

1.  jingle's submission:  Presto Ballet - The Chemical Age:  Oh, hell yes.  This is some really tasty prog.  Really strong songwriting, great instrumentation, beautiful harmonies, just a really great track all around.  Cheers, jingle.

Now for the standings:

1. DTVT - 85 + 0*20 = 85
2. Lonestar - 55 + 25 = 80
3. Elite - 65 + 10 = 75
4. Jingle - 45 + 15 = 60
5. Ninja - 40 - 15 = 25
X. Scorpion - 15 - 15 = 0
X. Lolz - 1 - 1 = 0

Scorpion and Lolzeez are dead.  Thanks for playing, it's been fun, you two.  To our remaining five players:  the scoring is being scaled accordingly, so now only the top 2 players in each round will win back their bets, with the bottom 2 players in each round losing their bets (and, of course, the 3rd place player winning nothing).  Please keep that in mind.  Round 5 starts now.

So, by saying 'halfway there', is it 8 rounds?

Choosing a song now, I've been away from home for the past two days. It's 8:30 AM here now and I've been awake for 4 hours already on just 1.5 hours of sleep. No, that was not voluntarily, but you're getting the song(s) before you wake up again.

Also, glad you liked the Magic Pie song! Competition surely gets more interesting now with less people in there. And we have some very good contenders left. This is going to be good!

ROUND 5 RESULTS

Alright, so we lost 2 participants, leaving us with 5 players, and the submissions by these players have for the most part really impressed me, so I anticipate this is going to get more difficult as we go along.  I enjoyed all these songs very much, so people are (again) going to lose points unfairly.  Such is life.  It is difficult but this is my duty as a roulette judge.  Anyway, here we go:

5. Elite's submission:  Alt-J (∆) - Taro:  The only song submitted I wasn't really crazy about.  Weird vocals, man, which didn't bode well for your submission since I don't really listen to lyrics and sort of just treat the vocals like any other instrument.  It was mostly just the intro that put me off, since the song eventually settles into a pretty cool pseudo-raï groove.  On the whole, though, this one didn't stick out as especially good to me.

4. jingle's submission: Jerry Doucette - Mama Let Him Play:  So I put myself forward as a classic rock guy, and the first classic rock song submitted in the roulette ends up losing points.  Actually, I liked this one a lot.  Never heard it on the radio before, but it's a genuinely good, catchy tune.  In another round, this could have taken a top spot, but our top three were especially strong this time.

3.  DTVT's submission:  Maudlin of the Well - Gleam in Ranks:  One of the more interesting submissions I've received.  The introduction in particular really impressed me -- it sort of floats between a more "normal" post-rock sound and a more dissonant and chaotic sound, with the piano flourishes adding a fusion-like element to it.  Really great tune.  The top 2 are rather normal prog songs, but I really respect this one for playing with different genres in a unique way.

2.  Ninja's submission:  Beyond the Bridge - Where the Earth and Sky Meet:  Ninja grabs a scoring spot with this beautiful ballad.  The chorus has a delightful melody, and the bridge features a suitably majestic guitar solo that's technically impressive while still being tasteful.  Absolutely sick outro.  The choir really makes the song.

1.  Lonestar's submission:  The Omega Experiment - Stimulus:  Lonestar's kill shot ended up working out.  He made a very risky bet which will pay off handsomely for him.  Musically, this one's a prog masterpiece.  Basically, this song does everything right.  Not much else I can say about it so I'll stop there.

1.  Lonestar - 80 + 40 = 120
2. DTVT - 85 + 0*15 = 85
3. Elite - 75 - 15 = 60
4. Jingle - 60 - 15 = 45
4. Ninja - 25 + 20 = 45

Round 6 starts now.  I'm back at home and I've got nothing to do until school starts so our last 3 rounds will hopefully go by quickly.

Ditto... sent Classic Rock to an admitted Classic Rock 'guy'.  4th place.  Prog is obviously where his musical mind-set is at.  Why fight it?

Oh, come on, don't get your panties in a twist.  I said I thought your song was very good.  Just because you send me a song that fits in a genre I said I like doesn't mean you'll necessarily win your wager.  It's all relative.

EDIT:  Same thing with the King Crimson song, actually.  I liked that one (it's fucking King Crimson) but had to put it near the bottom of the ranking because I felt the other songs were better.  The writeups explain all of this and you'll probably be in less of a blind rage if you try to understand why your song placed how it did (that is, it might be the case that I hated your song, or it might just be the case that all the other songs were better).

I'm not in a blind rage. Just saying that you clearly have a strong preference for prog-metal right now. One only needs to look at/listen to all the songs that have scored points. That's all I'm sayin.

ROUND 6 RESULTS WHOOOO!!!!!1

Let's just get right into the ranking:

5.  Elite's submission:  Arena - Cutting the Cards:  Eh, couldn't really get into this one.  Didn't like the vocalist (that "yes you knowwwww" at around 3:30 was kind of laughable), and I didn't find any of the instrumentation awfully interesting either.  Falls into a lot of prog cliches, which isn't a great thing.

4.  lonestar's submission:  Abandoned Stars - Beyond Reason:  Not a huge fan of this one either.  Just sort of boring to me.  Again, the vocalist was a bit odd in this one, though I will say that the catchy chorus redeems it partially.

3.  jingle's submission:  Lost in Thought - Beyond the Flames:  Not bad at all.  Pretty heavy, pretty catchy.  Great chorus, sweet vocalist, epic instrumentation.

2.  DTVT's submission:  Pyramid Theorem - Another Day Slips By:  Heard a lot of talk about this band around the board last year, but never really got around to checking out their album.  This was pretty strong, though, so I think I'll have to check out the album in full later.  It was really the instrumental outro that sold me here.  Those unison runs are pretty incredible.

1.  Ninja's submission:  Big Big Train - Judas Unrepentant:  This kicks ass.  Immediately floored by the great groove in the verse -- reminds me a lot of Close to the Edge.  Heard a lot of Jethro Tull in that flute-filled bridge, too.  This is more like a classic prog song, which is a refreshing thing to hear in a recent release.  I'll be checking out more of this band's stuff for sure. :tup

1.  Lonestar - 120 - 10 = 110
2.  DTVT - 85 + 20 = 105
3.  Ninja - 45 + 20 = 65
4.  Elite - 60 - 10 = 50
5.  jingle - 45 + 43*0 = 45

Ninja makes an incredible recovery and launches into 3rd place, while lonestar and the professor vie for the top position.  Of course, we've still got two rounds left, so anything can happen at this point.  Try to get your round 7 submissions in by tomorrow evening, and hopefully I can churn out the results by Friday.  Sound good?  (I'll be more mindful of the administrative stuff this time around so there shouldn't be any delays like we had this time.)

ROUND 7 RESULTS -- WE'RE ALMOST THERE GUYS

Alrighty, five good songs were submitted, and 169 points were bet.  Who's going to win their points back?  The answer may surprise you!  (Probably not though)

5.  Ninja's submission:  Nightingale - Shadowman
4.  Elite's submission:  Jeff Buckley - Grace

Elite and Ninja will be losing points this time around.  The Nightingale song was pretty groovy and cool, and I really liked the Jeff Buckley song, which had a great vocalist and a lot of interesting harmonies.  However, the remaining three songs were so fucking good that it took me no time to decide that these songs were going to sit at the bottom of the ranking.  They just can't compare to what's coming.

3.  DTVT's submission:  Bruce Dickinson - Dark Side of Aquarius:  Like the King Crimson piece that was submitted in round 2 or whatever, I'm rather ashamed to say I wasn't familiar with this one already (I've heard a few of Bruce's albums, but I've never heard anything off of Accident of Birth).  Anyway, I've been consistently impressed with his other tunes, and this one is no exception.  Great chorus.  Epic, singalong-able melodies.  Really strong submission.

2.  jingle's submission:  Shadow Circus - The Horseman Ride: Project Blue Pt. 5:  jingle nabs a scoring spot with an unlikely favorite.  Doesn't really sound like anything that's been submitted so far, and I imagine Shadow Circus's other music doesn't sound much like this either, but the band pulls off this folksy, almost country-esque groove really well.  Really catchy while still maintaining a somewhat spooky tooooone.  Nice chorus.

1.  chef's submission:  Aching Beauty - Pairsonality:  Apparently Lonestar just found this band on the day that he made this submission.  Anyway, that was a very, very good choice, and he could easily have gotten away with betting much more.  It's definitely prog metal, but this band isn't just another Dream Theater or Symphony X clone.  Super interesting rhythms throughout.  Great guitar solo.  Great find, chef.

1.  Lonestar: 110 + 20 = 130
2.  DTVT: 105 + 0*40 = 105
3.  jingle - 45 + 44 = 89
4.  Elite: 50 - 20 = 30
5.  Ninja: 65 - 45 = 20

EXTRA SPECIAL NOTE ON ROUND 8 SUBMISSIONS:  I'll be sending a PM to each of you with a link to a Google form where you can anonymously submit your final entry & wager.  We're doing things a little differently this time around to ensure that the final round is completely fair.  Do not PM your final entry to me and do your best not to include any identifying information either in this thread or in the form.  I'll be doing the final ranking anonymously, and you guys will have to help me out after I do the rankings to compute the final standings.  Understood?

Another problem ... I have a pretty identifiable point total, and if I bet it all, you're gonna deduce which submission is mine pretty easily.

I like your idea here, but I'm not sure this is going to work out as you planned.

Also, the song I want to submit doesn't appear to be on YT or Grooveshark.  Will check Spotify in the morning - since I'm on my ipad right now (and not a premium member).  If it ain't there, I'm gonna have to email it to ya - which again gives me away.

Eh, worst case scenario is I know exactly who sent which song and then round 8 is ranked exactly like all of the other rounds, which isn't a big deal.  I was just experimenting with a new format this time around.

Sorry dude. I'm tired and my reading comprehension isn't what it should be. :P

I think the expression is "isn't what it used to be", but I like your version. :lol

You could have someone else be the administrator for this round.  They would receive the songs and wagers, then they would just send you the links for you to judge.  Once you have the rank, you and the admin match up the songs and appropriate points to the participants.

If too much has already been given away for this round, I guess people could use that strategy for future roulettes.

That would have been a good idea.

Alright guys, here we go, round 8 results.  The identities of 3 of the submitters ended up remaining unknown to me, so we don't know our winner quite yet.  Either way, it's been fun, and I hope you guys have enjoyed these 3 weeks or however long it's been.  Let's get to the ranking:

5.  Ninja's submission:  Heather Dale - Mordred's Lullaby:  A risky submission that didn't go so well.  This one has an odd atmospheric Celtic sound, replete with chanting and what I believe is a didgeridoo.  It was interesting, but I ultimately wasn't all that into it.  Ah, well.  Ninja bet 20 points.

4.  Someone's submission:   Orianthi - Heaven In This Hell:  This one's alright.  Sort of a modern southern rock sound.  Cute singer.  Bassist is really, really good.  I was most interested in the outro, which featured a beautiful acoustic guitar.  Wikipedia tells me this Orianthi has been playing acoustic guitar since she was 6.  I would have liked to hear her explore that soundscape a bit more.  Submitter bet 30 points.

3.  Someone's submission:  Tetrafusion - Monologue:  I was unsure about this one, which is why it's in the limbo of 3rd place.  There were a lot of brilliant moments, like the introductory riff, the epic outro, and that crazy bridge at 1:22 which has, to quote JR, "one of the coolest riffs".  This young band has a lot of potential.  At the same time, I wasn't exactly captivated by all of the band's ideas.  The vocal melodies are pretty uninteresting (particularly during the verses), and the riffs can get a bit repetitive.  Submitter bet 104 points, but will not be getting (or losing) any of them.

2.  Someone’s submission:  Maestrick - Lake of Emotions:  Also a risky submission, given that I don't think I've exactly rewarded extremely long songs throughout the course of this roulette.  This one clocks in at 21 minutes, but (thankfully) it doesn't feel nearly that long.  Really impressed with the bassist, and the vocal harmonies are great (as we would expect from a prog band).  Really energetic with some frantic moments, but it builds up to a beautiful climax beginning at 14:20.  Sort of an odd drum sound, but that's not a deal breaker.  Happy to hear a talented female vocalist in some sections.  Fantastic outro, though there's prog tastiness throughout.  Congratulations, someone, you get your bet of "everything" back.

1.  jingle's submission:  Chain - Hot to Cold:  jingle guaran-damn-teed a scoring submission, so here it is.  Really fantastic piece.  Strong throughout, though honestly I was sold by the breakdown at 0:40.  Fantastic verses, and all of the instrumental interludes were really awesome.  Good work.  Chad let it ride and will be doubling his score.

... So there it is.  Here are our standings as of the last round:

1.  Lonestar: 130
2.  DTVT: 105
3.  jingle 89
4.  Elite: 30
5.  Ninja: 20

Ninja lost his 20 points and will be concluding the game with 0 points.  Sorry about that buddy.  I can't be positive, but it seems like Elite submitted the Orianthi song (the bet matches his score, and the song is sonically similar to some of the others he's sent throughout this roulette and the last).  So it seems like he'll end the game with 0 points as well (though we'll have to wait for his input before we're absolutely sure).  jingle won his bet back and 89 times 2 is 178 if my elementary school math education doesn't fail me.  Assuming Elite submitted the Orianthi song, that leaves DTVT and Lonestar to get 2nd and 3rd place, though I'm unsure which is which.  Whoever's responsible for Maestrick will double their score and take the crown, and whoever's responsible for Tetrafusion will fall back to third place (though with a happy super-100 point score).  So who is it?

Since he's on vacation, I'll spill the beans.

Tetrafusion = Doc
Maestrick = chef

Doc's been a big Tetrafusion guy for a while (got me in to them, and they're #11 on his YET UNFINISHED TOP 50 V2!!!).  Chef just discovered Maestrick, and has pimped them hard recently, including a dreamy review of the album on ladyobscure.com.  Personally, I was underwhelmed on first listen, but committed to going back and giving it another shot.

I'm happy with my result... couple of first place and second place finishes in this roulette, and losing to the guy that has the hot hand right now ain't anything worth sneezing at.

Nicely run roulette.  Gonna miss this one.
