Title: H's song roulette, version 2
Post by: Ħ on July 27, 2013, 01:30:25 PM
There will be 5 rounds and 5 competitors. PM me your first song if you want in. First come first serve. There's no category for round one.

I don't listen to that much music so it's unlikely you'll choose something I'm familiar with, but if you do I'll let you know.

Begin!  :yarr

Competitors:
Jaffa
Scorpion
theseoafs
Destiny Of Chaos
lonestar

My first time doing one of these.  Pretty sure I'm going to fail spectacularly.  Everyone else on this forum knows so much more music than I do.   :lol

H, I'm not sure if we have anything in common musically, so I'm also expecting failure.  :lol

Shameless plug for my concurrent roulette (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=38247).

That's two out of five entrants expecting to fail so far.  Should be fun.

Oh, and good luck, everybody.

I've never done this either.... expecting to fail miserably as well.

So a majority of the contestants are expecting failure.  Good.

I'll be pretty surprised if I get through the first round, to be honest.

But I'm still looking forward to this.  Thanks for the invitation, H.   :metal

If you expect to fail, you're already halfway there.

I personally expect to be bathing in the tears of failure shed by my competitors at the end of this. :RJ:

Jaffa – Fear Factory – "Supernova"

An okay song. I like what they are going for, but it sounds a bit generic. Maybe that’s because sonically, it’s not great. I’d be interested in hearing a remastered version. They could do awesome things with those harmonies. 2 points

Scorpion – Diablo Swing Orchestra - "Tap Dancer’s Dilemma"

Someone sent me this song for my first roulette. I hated it. My tastes have obviously changed. This song is something else. I honestly haven’t heard anything quite like it, but I dig the swing and virtuosity. It’s a little bit too creepy and demonic sounding for my tastes (those vocals give me chills) but I can appreciate it. 3 points

theseoafs – Ange – "Le bois travaille meme le dimanche"

Tu parle francais? Je l’ai etudie depuis quatre ans. Mais je ne comprends pas beaucoup de mots de ce chanson. :lol But it’s pretty cool. Beautiful vocals. Solid prog. Really weird. I only gave it one listen because it was so long, but it was really interesting. 3 points

Destiny of Chaos – Therion – "The Rise of Sodom and Gomorra"

A swing and a miss with choosing Therion. I really don’t like this stuff. Stay away from the symphonic metal please. 1 point

lonestar - The Omega Experiment – "Stimulus"

Not my thing, sir. I don’t jive well with this type of genre. You’ll succeed in this contest if you go with something a little more classical (either classic rock or classic metal). 1 point

Scoring is at a total of 4 points. At the end of each round, the best submission gets extra points corresponding to the round it is. So for round one, the best submission gets 1 bonus point, for round two, the best submission gets 2 bonus points, etc.

The best submission for Round One is...................Scorpion with the Diablo Swing Orchestra's "Tap Dancer's Dilemma"! Congrats, you get an extra point!

Scorpion - 4
theseoafs - 3
Jaffa - 2
Destiny Of Chaos - 1
lonestar - 1

The theme for Round Two is that it has to be classic rock. I don't care if it's mainstream, odds are I don't know it anyway. If I do, I'll let you know. Don't send a song longer than 10 minutes please.

Round Two, begin!

Whoo!  :metal

Explain this to me:  how did I end up with 4 points?  3 points for the song + 0 points for the end-of-round bonus = 4 points?

The theme for Round Two is that it has to be classic rock. I don't care if it's mainstream, odds are I don't know it anyway. If I do, I'll let you know. Don't send a song longer than 10 minutes please.

Oh, fuck yes.

Post by: Ħ on July 28, 2013, 10:21:45 AM
I fixed that. Originally, I was going to make it out of 5 points, so I gave you a 4 in my notes. Then I decided to make it out of 4 points, so I lowered everyone's points by one. So your score is a 3/4. :)

Took a chance on some true, straight-up classic radio rock this time around.  Hopefully I won't drop in the rankings as a result.

Scorpion - Led Zeppelin - "Immigrant Song"

Astounding. Zeppelin never fails. I've heard it before of course, but damn, it really blows you away when you intentionally turn your ears on to actually listen to it. 4 points

theseoafs - Chicago - "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?"

Really solid, I hadn't heard it before. I love this stuff. Unfortunately, it didn't blow me away like some of the other stuff this round. Really solid jazz/rock/whatever-the-genre-is-called, though. 3 points

Jaffa - Blue Oyster Colt - "(Don't Fear) The Reaper"

What a track, simply fantastic. Dat cowbell. Obviously I've heard it before but, with lots of classic rock songs, I neither know the name of the song or band, or all the little intricacies. I particularly never really noticed that heavy instrumental section in the middle which kicks butt. Great song choice. 4 points

Destiny Of Chaos - Boston - "Foreplay/Long Time"

I could easily see Boston rising into my top 5 bands if I checked them out more. Well, to summarize my thoughts on the album, I'll quote Sid Storms from the youtube video comments:

Quote
This is the best song ever, I can't describe my love for it. If this album/song was a women I would marry it. Because if you transfer this music into beauty than if this song was a women, it would the most beautiful woman on the planet. If you turn this music into a person, it would be the best person ever. If you transfer it into anything that is good other than music, it will be the best at it.

Bravo! 4 points

lonestar - TRIUMPH - "Lay It On The Line"

Holy crap. Another killer submission this round. Pretty heavy too. 4 points

OK so with that out of the way, I'll announce that the winner of Round Two is......Destiny of Chaos with Boston! Congrats, you get 2 bonus points.

Scorpion - 8
Destiny Of Chaos - 7
theseoafs - 6
Jaffa - 6
lonestar - 5

With that, everyone is looking pretty good. Remember there are 3 bonus points for the winner of Round Three.

Speaking of Round Three, the theme is REALLY METAL. You have to get me pumped. If I'm not that pumped by what you send, you automatically get a 2. I'm serious.

Four 4s and a 3?  Hell of a round.  Nice work everybody!

Gonna have to think about round three for a little while.  Is there a submission deadline for this round?

Damn, I was this close to sending in Foreplay/Long Time. :lol  Good work everybody, that was an awesome round.

BRUTAL submissions so far, but I'm not done yet. I'll get it finished in the next three days.

Trying to decide if 'brutal' is a good thing or a bad thing in this context.  Brutal as in 'this is painfully bad  :\' or brutal as in 'this is so metal  :metal'.

Probably not three days. I could do it tomorrow. I just like to put a good bit of space in between each listen to help clear my mind.

Scorpion - Adagio - "Domination"

That's what I'm talking about. Sorta reminds me of Symphony X's better side. An awesome band I've heard named dropped alongside other prog metal giants but I've never bothered to check them out. A solid track. 4 points

Destiny Of Chaos - Machine Head - "Halo"

I've heard of this band too. Very chunky and gnarly stuff. You really can't get heavier than this. Killer from beginning to end. Easily a contender for the best song of the round. :metal :metal :metal 4 points

theseoafs - Nevermore - "Born"

You're lucky the instrumental stuff was so freaking good, because the singer was not my thing. I'll give you 3 points. So close theseoafs but you've gotta really blow me out of the water if you want to get ahead. (You can do it!)

Jaffa - Godsmack - "Speak"

Uhhhh Adrenaline Mob is off limits. JK. A solid effort. I wasn't completely blown away (it was a little too generic, like something I'd hear on WWE) but the song was still pretty tight. Great vocalist, probably the best of the round. Also, Queensryche did the "Speak!" end of the song thing loooong before Godsmack. Just sayin'. 3 points

lonestar - Tears of Anger - "Light Up My Fuse"

I didn't get it really. Sorry loney. :( 2 points

The winner of round three is......again Destiny of Chaos! Congrats you get 3 bonus points. And he takes the lead! Overall, a very solid round in general; I didn't dislike anything to say the least!

Anyway, I'll explain to you what we'll be doing. Round Four is a wager round. That means you can choose to wager if you want to. If you don't, it will be the same scoring system for you. Wager up to however many points you have. You'll either lose your wager or win it (there is no middle option where you neither win nor lose). The 4 points for Round Four's winner will be applied after the winnings are calculated. Make sense?

Round Four's theme is mellow. You have to send me something a little softer, heartfelt, possibly somber. Something along the lines of Piano Man or something. The category is pretty loose though. It just has to be a more mellow track.

Destiny Of Chaos - 14 points
Scorpion - 12 points
theseoafs - 9 points
Jaffa - 9 points
lonestar - 7 points

I'm actually pleasantly surprised I got a 3 for Godsmack.  I felt pretty confident about it when I sent it, but after I sent it, I immediately regretted it.  For some reason I had the feeling you were going to hate it.  Glad that's not the case!

I'll start thinking about an entry for round 4.  Got a song in mind, but... it'd be risky.  We'll see.  If I don't come up with anything better, I'll go with it.  Either way I'll try to submit by tomorrow at the latest.

Damn, I was pretty confident about that song, too.  Oh, well, I was expecting to fail so tied-for-second-to-last isn't so bad.  I'll try to send by this evening.

Okay, sent.  Went with my first instinct on this one - it was literally the first song that popped into my head when I read the word 'mellow'.  I don't expect it to win the roulette for me or anything, but I think you might really like it.  It's... probably quite a bit softer than you were expecting.  I'll look forward to seeing what you think.  :)

Sorry about the delay everyone!

A preemptive statement so you aren’t all mad at me – my standards for this round were pretty high. I can’t be handing out 4’s left and right anymore.

Destiny of Chaos – Pain of Salvation – “This Heart of Mine (I Pledge)”
I’ve given POS many chances, and I haven’t heard this song of theirs before, but I didn’t dig it. It didn’t do anything for me. Sorry man. You wagered 5 points, so you lose 5 points.

Scorpion – Placebo – “The Crawl”
Sorry Scorp but I really didn’t like this. Fortunately for you , you didn’t choose to wager, so you don’t lose any points. So you get 1 point per the regular scoring system.

Theseoafs – SufjanStevens – “Casiir Pulaski Day”
Decent. Pretty guitar but I wasn’t too into the vocalist or the lyrics. Trying too hard to be Simon and Garfunkel. Hate to say it but I wasn’t too into it mate. You wagered all your points, so…well, RIP.

Jaffa – Fleet Foxes – “Helplessness Blues”
Solid song, Jaffa! Great job. It wasn’t even sad (it didn’t have to be) but it had this quiet confidence about it. I really enjoyed this track. You wagered 5 points, so you get 5 points.

Lonestar – The Who – “Acoustic Tea and Theatre”
I didn't love it but didn't hate it either. I liked it. Fortunately for you, it was just good enough to get you to win your wager back. You wagered everything so you get 7 points.

And the winner of Round Four is...Jaffa! Congratulations buddy, you get 4 bonus points! This round shook up the rankings quite a bit:

Jaffa – 18 points
lonestar - 14 points
Scorpion - 13 points
Destiny of Chaos - 9 points
Theseoafs – 0 points

Now we are on to Round Five which is the semifinals! There are three special rules for Round Five:

1. Submit two songs. (each song less than 10 minutes please)
2. The submitter of the best song of the round gets a spot in the finals.
3. The submitter of the second best song of the round gets 5 bonus points.

So the final round will have two competitors - one is the winner of Round Four and the other is the person with the next highest amount of points. Get it? OK, get your submissions in!

:lol  Ah, well.  That Sufjan song is one of the most beautiful songs I know, so I dunno where to go from here.  It's been fun everyone.
Title: Re: H's song roulette, version 2

I'm... winning?  What the hell?   :lol  Awesome, though!  Glad you liked the Fleet Foxes song!  Yeah, I kind of ignored the 'somber' criteria, but when it comes to mellow, soft, and heartfelt, I felt like Helplessness Blues was pretty much a perfect fit.

Couple things about the latest standings.  Shouldn't lonestar have 14 points?  You said he won his wager of 7, but in the standings you've got him listed as having 7 total.  And also, if I won my wager of 5 plus got 4 bonus points, shouldn't I be at 18 now?  Or am I just misunderstanding something?

Also, real quick, no theme for the two songs we submit this round?  Just, whatever we feel like?

Thanks jaffa, good looking out man.  :tup

No problem.  You'll notice I was careful to make sure I still had the lead - otherwise I might not have pointed it out.   :lol

Anyway, sent.  I'm really not sure why I sent what I sent, but, we'll see how it goes.

Update on results...I figured out the scores for everything but I'm having trouble picking a best song so I want to do another listen-through. My family and I are actually on a camping trip right now and it's making streaming really difficult. Sorry for the delay but it will be a couple days.

I hope the trouble is there are so many good songs that you can't decide which one you like most.  As opposed to them all being so bad that you can't decide which one you dislike least.   :lol

Anyway, take your time.  Thanks for the update.

First, I have to apologize for taking so long with this round. Had this not been the semi-final round, I would have called it off. But life happened. I started a very busy job which has been sucking the days away. So I apologize.

On to results:

Scorpion - Buckethead - "Hills of Eternity", and Evergrey - "Recreation Day"

Buckethead was pleasant, but I wasn't exactly blown away by it. It was too generic. Evergrey was a much better submission choice. Very lively, upbeat, and surprisingly cheerful heavy metal song. I don't always dig the Swedish metal stuff, but this was pretty good. 3 points.

lonestar - AzaZello - "Carnal Caravan", and IQ - "Frequency"

AzaZello was pretty sweet. I sort of stray away from prog these days, but this still maintained my interest beginning to finish. What's great is that IQ was even better. It ends a bit too anticlimactically, but overall it was a very well-structured song. I definitely liked the mood they set. 4 points.

Jaffa - Arcade Fire - "City With No Children", and Meat Loaf - "The Monster Is Loose"

Arcade Fire was a nice, brief little song. Didn't blow me away but it had no real flaws either. Overall a safe choice. Meat Loaf was very impressive, although the quality of sound in the video was rather poor (or maybe it's my new headphones). I greatly enjoyed it. It started strong and ended strong. 4 points.

Destiny of Chaos - Redemption - "The Suffocating Silence", and Aerosmith - "Kings And Queens"

Redemption didn't impress me, I'm sorry to say. It just wasn't my thing. I've never been much into that "driving" metal style. Aerosmith was better, though it wasn't the best I've heard from them. Overall, I hate to say it but your submissions were just too safe. 2 points.

theseoafs - Queen and David Bowie - "Under Pressure", and Yes - "And You And I"

You sent me two other, absolutely mindblowing, 10/10 songs: "God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys, and "American Pie" by Don McLean. Those would have easily won you the round had I not known them well enough already. They're two of my favorite songs, in fact. :lol But as for the songs you submit, Queen was definitely better. I always knew the main riff of "Under Pressure" but I never knew what the song was called or who wrote it. Now I do. 4 points.

Now I have to decide who won the round. It's between "Under Pressure", "The Monster Is Loose", and "Frequency".

And the winner is...

theseoafs, with "Under Pressure" by Queen! Congrats, you've earned yourself a free pass to the final round!

And congratulations, too, to Jaffa! You've placed first in points so you're also in the final round!

Semi-final rankings:

Jaffa – 22 points
lonestar - 18 points
Scorpion - 16 points
Destiny of Chaos - 11 points
Theseoafs – 0 points

All right, Jaffa and theseoafs, in the final round, send me the most favorite song of yours that I haven't heard of. Send me a few backups just in case. And if you don't have favorites, just send some really killer track. Good luck to both of you!

Sweet!  Glad you liked the Meat Loaf song, H!

As soon as I read that whoever submitted the best song this round would automatically move on to the finals, I had a feeling theseoafs was going to pull it off.  Nice job, dude.  Under Pressure was a hell of a pick.  Especially given then you were... well, under pressure.  Anyway, great comeback!

Can't believe I'm in the finals here.  Any deadline on submissions?  I'll try to be quick, but it could take me a bit to think of some suitably awesome songs.

Fuck yeah, I knew some song in that batch had to be good enough to get me to the finals :lol  I'm afraid I may have blown my load, though, since I sent in 4 of my very favorite songs all in one go (and got confirmation that you're already familiar with two of them).  Let me have a look.  Best of luck Jaffa.

Okay, cool.  I do have one other quick question while I'm deciding what to send.  In your post, you said we should aim to send you something you've never heard of.  Do you mean that literally, as in we should send something from an artist you've never even heard of?  Or just a song you're not familiar with?  Just checking.
Title: Re: H's song roulette, version 2

If he's not supposed to have heard of the artist then I might have to rethink all of the 4 songs I threw at him :lol

Alright, cool.  That's what I figured, but I wanted to be sure.  I sent four songs, too.  I'm not supremely confident about any of them, but I haven't been supremely confident about any of this, and it's worked out pretty well.  So we'll see how it goes.

Also, I wanted to thank you for inviting me to participate in this, H.  It's been fun.  :)

Title: Re: H's song roulette, version 2
Post by: Ħ on September 07, 2013, 06:19:30 PM
You guys gave me four songs each. I had to first figure out what was the best submission from each of you, and then determine a winner between the two of you. And now I've got a winner. But first, a word to each of you.

theseoafs -

You started in this roulette as a fine young man. You had your failings, but you pulled yourself out of the mud. Round Five saw an incredible comeback, as you went from having 0 points to becoming a contender in the final round.

Jaffa -

I never doubted you for a second, and you've delivered every step of the way. Your performance in this roulette has been stellar, and you've surprised me with how good some of your submissions turned out to be. I had a hunch you'd make it to the final round from the get go. I'm happy it turned out that way. (And no, I didn't let that influence my decisions. ;) )

Now we'll turn to the songs of the final round!

theseoafs, your submissions all revolved around classic rock hits. You gave me "Goodbye Stranger" by Supertramp, "Nightswimming" by R.E.M., and "Last Dance" by Donna Summer. Now, I know those songs (some better than others). They're all terrific, 8/10's or better. But the best song you gave me was "The Last Resort" by The Eagles.

I must confess, I've never been an Eagles guy. I don't get "Hotel California" or "Take It Easy" or...well, that's pretty much all I knew by them before now. :lol So I was skeptical when I saw an Eagles song in your list. I thought it was going to be a snoozefest after I saw that it exceeded the 7-minute mark. How pleasantly surprised I was to be wrong!

"The Last Resort" blew me away, to put it simply. I've always been a fan of apocalyptic songs (if that makes sense), so this really hit the nail on the head in that respect. I was literally captivated by everything in the song - the music, the mood, the lyrics. Heck, the lyrics were sheer poetry. Songs like these tell a story about the state we human beings find ourselves in. theseoafs, you've won yourself an Eagles convert!

Jaffa, you sent me four songs as well. Two of the songs were killer and would have guaranteed your victory...but I knew them already. Those were "Cemetery Gates" by Pantera and "Fly Like An Eagle" by The Steve Miller Band. 10/10 songs, both of them. But I know them all too well.

The other two songs you gave me were Muse's "Hysteria" and Deep Purple's "Strangeways". I've heard loads about Muse but I never bothered to check them out. "Hysteria" is their most popular song, and I must say, it wasn't my cup of tea. I knew it before, and it still just didn't do anything for me. So I'm going to judge Deep Purple.

You're very fortunate, then, that the song I didn't know was so good. Literally this head made my head spin. I don't know if you would call it "prog" (I personally have a hard time identifying what counts as prog) but it was something you could see a non-metal Dream Theater putting out. Technical rhythms, instrumental wackiness, all around craziness. When I finished listening, I was just like WTF, in a good way. Golden submission.

Now it is time to reveal the winner.

And the winner is....

...

..

.

theseoafs! Congratulations, friend!

It was such a close bout. I kept going back in forth in my head as to who should win the round. But after listening to each song several times, I finally came to a decision. But trust me when I say that it was so close.

Thanks everyone for participating! Sorry about the delays. I hope you had fun! Thanks to all of you, I have some great new music under my belt. :hat

Ha, of course the two songs I was most confident about would be the ones you already knew.   :lol  At least I was right in thinking you would like them, though!  And I'm not surprised that Muse isn't your cup of tea; as I said in my submission message, Muse are one of my favorite bands, so it didn't feel like to leave them out of this, but I knew Hysteria was a gamble.  Anyway, glad you liked Strangeways!

Also, coincidentally, I almost sent an Eagles songs myself... but it wasn't The Last Resort, and you probably wouldn't have liked it as much as The Last Resort, by the sound of things.   :lol

But enough about me.  Congratulations, theseoafs!

Actually, I applaud everybody who participated.  There were some absolutely amazing songs in this thing.

The Last Resort is amazing. Oddly enough, I had for the first time about a week ago.
