I couldn't find a thread dedicated to any form of extreme music like Black Metal, Doom Metal, Speed Metal and so on...so I thought why not just create a common thread where we can discuss news and stuff about the extreme side of Metal. Now there are so many sub genres out there so I think i'll just call it "Extreme Metal" to keep it simple, i'm not gonna debate on what classifies as "extreme metal" and I would also like this thread not become a single debate about that either......i'll leave that up to the listener and his definition! :)
Some of my favourite bands that "I" would atleast put in this folder:
Dimmu Borgir
Behemoth
Decapitated
Vader
Nile
Divine Heresy
The Dillinger Escape Plan
Keep Of Kalessin
Shining
Necrophagist
Satyricon
Meshuggah
Bloodbath
Morbid Angel
and many more....
I'm pretty excited for what Behemoth is gonna put out with their upcoming album and speaking of....here's drummer Krimh doing session work for Behemoth:

We had a death metal, black metal, and thrash metal thread floating around at some point. They kind of flounder from time to time, but they're definitely out there.
Anyway, yeah. Extreme metal FTW.
-
I would say most of the metal I listen to would qualify as "Extreme Metal", though some are more extreme than others. To me, if I want metal, I mostly go for the heavier styles.
I guess bands like: Converge, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Dir En Grey, Between the Buried and Me (if they even count) and Loma Prieta for example.

Great picks though! :metal I guess you could try Decapitated, kind of a mix...not really but their new drummer kicks some major butt! :lol

Lawless Darkness was a classic.
I have high hopes for the new album.

The new Deeds of Flesh record is absolutely insane.
I need to get on that, I loved their last one.
I go through periodic death metal phases where that's ALL I listen to for weeks, and then it hibernates for about a year or so. Only exceptions being Nile (though I was less than fond of their last album) and Obscura, which get played all the time. In fact, I'm about due to get into death metal again fairly soon.
-
The new Converge and Dillinger Escape Plan LP's are absolutely awesome. And Deafheaven's album Sunbather is the best black metal I've heard in years. Pretty awesome year for metal in general.

I agree with all of this.

Deafheaven's album Sunbather is the best black metal I've heard in years.
I don't know if I'd call it Black Metal...maybe Blackened shoegaze or something, but it is definitely awesome.
-
Just listening to Watain - The Wild Hunt
:metal
-
Been listening to Rivers of Nihil's single "Raineater"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4Eya-2JfoU
Probably one of my most anticipated albums of the year, the guys in the band are all pretty rad guys, so I hope they find success!
Also I've been spinning Desecravity as of late, such a fresh breath of death metal.
-
+1 for Meshuggah and Bloodbath. Decapitated too. I've enjoyed Meshuggah for a while now, and I saw Decapitated open for them last year in Chicago. They were very tight live, and Krimh was great live. He's a monster of a drummer.
-
Figured this would be the appropriate thread. I recently discovered Fleshgod Apocalypse after seeing them open for Wintersun and I have been listening their new album Labyrinth and their last one, Agony, pretty much nonstop the last few days. I highly recommend them. :metal

Krimh is awesome! :metal

The new Oathbreaker is quite stunning, and I didn't expect the black metal sound from the band, based on their past work, but it's a very welcome and great change. Get this band on a US tour with Deafheavean ASAP somebody.
EDIT: Also, the thread I started for them totally died out, but if you guys could give this a listen, it's seriously some of the best new technical death metal you'll hear, and these guys(Rivers of Nihil) hopefully hit it big with their debut coming up! :metal
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4Eya-2JfoU
-
That was pretty bad-ass! :metal
-
They've come quite a ways, especially their vocalist! I've always liked his vocals, but he's gotten so much better at pronunciation and that really helps I think, that and they're starting to utilize their bassist's high pitched howls which creates such an awesome dynamic between the two. Their album is one of my most anticipated of the year, the material I've heard and seeing some it live just sealed the deal, and it doesn't hurt that they're all completely radular dudes.
-
So has anyone heard of Equilibrium from Germany? They're one of the best folk metal bands imo.
Here's an awesome song from their new EP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjKJlKQ50wE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjKJlKQ50wE)
-
word on the street is that The Faceless are breaking up after this next BTBAM tour. sure the latest album isn't up to par but im still bummed. Planetary Duality is one of my favorite albums ever
-
Speaking of The Faceless, just saw this beastly clip with Alex:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAQqrqi2JAA#t=173
Regarding The Faceless breaking up, haven't heard anything about that. Heard any reason why?
-
just rumors here and there, just gossip for now. but it makes sense. Keene is the only original member and kinda took control of everything. Wes Hauch has some other projects lined up that he's been hinting at. Saw them live a little while ago and no one was into it at all, except maybe Rudinger

Yes I liked them since they released their debut album in 2005. The new EP is great too.

I'm digging that one a lot too.
-
Yeah, the new Carcass album was sweet. I feel like it pretty much bridges the gap between Necroticism and Heartwork (aka it pwns).
-
I'm bored so here are a bunch of random 2013 album recs that haven't been mentioned here yet.
Nails - Abandon All Life
Quite possible the heaviest album ever made.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4nV8WV-EDY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4nV8WV-EDY)
Darkthrone - The Underground Resistance
Not really "extreme" but a great effort from a legendary band; their best in quite a long time actually.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyNOB-MBS50 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyNOB-MBS50)
Paysage d'Hiver - Das Tor
This is about as grim and frostbitten as black metal gets, folks. (Be sure to listen with headphones.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=150rYT2cDUw (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=150rYT2cDUw)
Sleep White Winter - Dreamscapes
Ah so you thought Deafheaven had the blackgaze market cornered this year? Not so. This upstart band has released one of the best and most beautiful black metal albums of the year.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmamVFd8I3o (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmamVFd8I3o)
Summoning - Old Morning's Dawn
After a rather lengthy absence, symphonic black metal Summoning have hit it out of the park once again with this vast, epic album. Old Morning's Dawn pretty much cements their place as one of my all-time favorite black metal bands.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-wZTxJoDCQ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-wZTxJoDCQ)
Caladan Brood - Echoes of Battle
Whoa, who would've guessed that there could be a similar band/album to Summoning and that it would not only come out in the same year as Summoning's new one but also sound about as good as Summoning? Definitely check out Echoes of Battle and Old Morning's Dawn. They're both amazing albums.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4E6sTPlxeQ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4E6sTPlxeQ)
Peste Noire - Peste Noire
Sure, the guy behind the music is a delusional, racist nutjob but that doesn't mean he's incapable of making great music. And trust me, it's really great stuff. Probably some of the wackiest black metal I've heard. It's not as good as the debut but it's a close second for me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4kWa7lUFfI&feature=player_detailpage (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4kWa7lUFfI&feature=player_detailpage)
Altar of Plagues - Teethed Glory and Injury
Excellent experimental/industrial black metal. Really different from their first two albums, but possibly their best.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7GO1XkFPk4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7GO1XkFPk4)
Immolation - Kingdom of Conspiracy
Nothing new here as compared with the last album, but awesome nonetheless. They're quickly becoming one of my favorite death metal bands.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNRGcLkR0ds (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNRGcLkR0ds)
Dark Tranquillity - Construct
The new direction these melodeath titans took on this album is just what they needed after the rather lackluster We Are the Void. One of the most unique melodeath albums I've heard and my third favorite DT album next to The Gallery and Damage Done.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTkwuyb_PLc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTkwuyb_PLc)
Soilwork - The Living Infinite
I always thought of Soilwork as a second-rate, but good, melodeath band until I heard this badboy. This album is just incredible. A double album and not a single stinker in the bunch. Very likely my death metal album of the year.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1uj4PntkOY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1uj4PntkOY)
Amorphis - Circle
Some don't consider this "extreme" but it's close enough imo. As much as I like Tales from the Thousand Lakes and Silent Waters, I'm inclined to call this my favorite Amorphis album. Sweet, catchy melodies and plain awesome songs throughout.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDpEBMHRp4g (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDpEBMHRp4g)
Amon Amarth - Deceiver of the Gods
AA got me into extreme metal in the first place so I must say I'm kind of a fanboy of theirs, but I think no matter who you ask this is a very solid and consistent album after the somewhat uneven (but still great) Surtur Rising.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Z3spJ_z3Es (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Z3spJ_z3Es)
Carcass - Surgical Steel
DEM RIFFS. Excellent comeback for this phenomenal death metal band.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSsrKl6HtAw (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSsrKl6HtAw)
Gorguts - Colored Sands
Not the easiest kind of death metal to get into but really rewarding once you do. Another successful comeback attempt by a legendary metal band.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vk7nb-idmdI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vk7nb-idmdI)
Portal - Vexovoid
And if you thought Gorguts was hard to get into then this stuff is even more challenging a listen. There's basically no melodies at all and everything sounds like it was put in through a washing machine on spin cycle. Really dark, intense stuff if you're in the mood for it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXQkTTl3nU8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXQkTTl3nU8)
Revocation - Revocation
Unlike certain thrash bands who have run out of ideas and decided to crap out a snoozefest of an album (Sodom :tdwn) this band keeps you on your toes the whole time with crazy, proggy time signatures and good ole raw aggression. 4 albums in and Revocation seems to be at their creative peak. Along with Vektor and Havok, Revocation once again prove their place as one of the best modern thrash bands.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Pcmzz8Bl2Y (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Pcmzz8Bl2Y)
Havok - Unnatural Selection
And speaking of Havok, while their 3rd offering is a bit of a step down from the amazing Time is Up, it's still a killer record that comes complete with a superb cover of Children of the Grave.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OGTvIeiYjg (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OGTvIeiYjg)
Cult of Luna - Vertikal
One of the year's best post-metal releases and it's based around an awesome concept to boot (Fritz's Lang's legendary film Metropolis).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkHSvwKgJQA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkHSvwKgJQA)
Mouth of the Architect - Dawning
Another fantastic post-metal release; the vocals could be a bit better but that's only a minor criticism.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4sMh3he1QY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4sMh3he1QY)
Rosetta - The Anaesthete
More post-metal goodness. The drumming is just incredible throughout.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kSOm7y-UfE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kSOm7y-UfE)
The Ocean - Pelagial
And the creme de la creme of 2013 post-metal. Dynamic, proggy, heavy and thoroughly engaging. Their best album yet by far.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ocq2sWK6CzM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ocq2sWK6CzM)
Intronaut - Habitual Levitations
And in close second we have an already well-established band who decided to take a turn for the mellower but still come out winners (just like Baroness did last year). While still not as good as the previous two albums, it's still a damn fine effort.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJEW2PHyspE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJEW2PHyspE)
Persefone - Spiritual Migration
A massive, epic album that displays some of the most insane technicality I've heard in prog metal. I can easily imagine this being the more extreme version of Dream Theater.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6_sRDFideY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6_sRDFideY)
Night Verses - Lift Your Existence
Yeah, it's a bit of a stretch to call this metal but I've gotta mention it nevertheless. This is hands-down one of the best hardcore/post-hardcore albums I've listened to. It's not only catchy, but it's also dynamic and exciting as hell. This is far from some run-of-the-mill screamo band who can't play their instruments properly. On the contrary, the musicianship here is incredible and this band deserves way more recognition. If you or someone you know isn't really into hardcore then this is a great album to introduce you/them to it.

I'm going to just do a rundown of all the extreme metal albums I've listened to this year.
Altar of Plagues - Teethed Glory and Injury
Excellent experimental/industrial black metal. Really different from their first two albums, but possibly their best.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7GO1XkFPk4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7GO1XkFPk4)
I thought this was top five when I first got it, but I'm not feeling it as much anymore. Maybe I overplayed it? I dunno, but it's not hitting me as hard as it was before. Still a very good album though.
Soilwork - The Living Infinite
I always thought of Soilwork as a second-rate, but good, melodeath band until I heard this badboy. This album is just incredible. A double album and not a single stinker in the bunch. Very likely my death metal album of the year.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1uj4PntkOY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1uj4PntkOY)
This was pretty good, but I don't think it needed to be a double album. There's about an album's worth of excellent material stretched out over two albums worth of music. I find I have this complaint of most double albums. :lol
Amorphis - Circle
Some don't consider this "extreme" but it's close enough imo. As much as I like Tales from the Thousand Lakes and Silent Waters, I'm inclined to call this my favorite Amorphis album. Sweet, catchy melodies and plain awesome songs throughout.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDpEBMHRp4g (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDpEBMHRp4g)
Good, but for some reason it's not making me want to replay it much. Easily better than Skyforger and The Beginning of Times though and "Narrow Path" is an awesome song. Amorphis always have at least one amazing song per album.
Amon Amarth - Deceiver of the Gods
AA got me into extreme metal in the first place so I must say I'm kind of a fanboy of theirs, but I think no matter who you ask this is a very solid and consistent album after the somewhat uneven (but still great) Surtur Rising.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Z3spJ_z3Es (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Z3spJ_z3Es)
Fantastically fun and catchy. It's almost impossible to not air guitar and grunt along with the songs. I don't know where this'll sit compared to the other releases of the year, but suffice to say it's a helluva lot of fun to listen to.
Carcass - Surgical Steel
DEM RIFFS. Excellent comeback for this phenomenal death metal band.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSsrKl6HtAw (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSsrKl6HtAw)
Absolutely riff-tacular. That's all I have to say at this point (only listened to twice so far). "Thrasher's Abattoir" -> "Noncompliance..." is a fantastic run of songs.
Gorguts - Colored Sands
Not the easiest kind of death metal to get into but really rewarding once you do. Another successful comeback attempt by a legendary metal band.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vk7nb-idmdI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vk7nb-idmdI)
Listened to this once. Very dense and... heavy. It will take quite a few more listens before I'm able to say anything remotely coherent about this and, to be honest, I just haven't been in the mood for it at all.
I could not get into this at all.
Some great riffing and technicality without being overly obnoxious about it. Catchy and abrasive with some surprisingly melodic sections as well.
Cult of Luna - Vertikal
One of the year's best post-metal releases and it's based around an awesome concept to boot (Fritz's Lang's legendary film Metropolis).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkHSvwKgJQA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkHSvwKgJQA)
What I really like about this album is how they mix the synths in with some of the heaviest fucking music. This album creates a very oppressive atmosphere and it makes me want to explore their past material (this is the first Cult of Luna I've listened to). Easily the best post-metal album of the year, IMO.
The Ocean - Pelagial
And the creme de la creme of 2013 post-metal. Dynamic, proggy, heavy and thoroughly engaging. Their best album yet by far.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ocq2sWK6CzM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ocq2sWK6CzM)
Everyone seems to love this album, but for some reason, I'm just not feeling it. I can't even explain why, just that it doesn't stick with me all that much. The only real complaint I can levy against this album is that the harsh vocals are kinda weak. Not bad, but they're clearly my least favorite aspect of the album. Everything else is good, but it's just not doing much for me.
Intronaut - Habitual Levitations
And in close second we have an already well-established band who decided to take a turn for the mellower but still come out winners (just like Baroness did last year). While still not as good as the previous two albums, it's still a damn fine effort.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJEW2PHyspE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJEW2PHyspE)
This was definitely a grower of an album. At first I was disappointed by the dropping of the harsh vocals, but I don't mind as much anymore and I can appreciate the songs for what they are rather than what I wanted them to be. Still, not as good as the previous two but it's certainly worth it to give this album the chance even if you may not like it at first.
Persefone - Spiritual Migration
A massive, epic album that displays some of the most insane technicality I've heard in prog metal. I can easily imagine this being the more extreme version of Dream Theater.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6_sRDFideY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6_sRDFideY)
I like the music but I have two knocks against this album: 1) It's way too long. I find myself getting exhausted of it about 3/4 of the way through and just waiting for it to end. 2) I'm not a fan of the vocals. The technicality, heaviness and weak vocals make it difficult for me to latch onto anything on this album. So while I can appreciate the music, it's in a more detached "That's neat" sort of way. I'm going to give this a few more chances though, as there's some pretty neat music in here.
Some other extreme metal releases I've listened to this year:
Fleshgod Apocalypse - Labyrinth
Probably better than Agony, IMO. They've managed to almost perfectly balance the technical metal aspects with the epic, symphonic arrangements. Agony leaned more towards the arrangements to the point that the metal portions were... not bad exactly, but not that flashy or wow-inducing and, honestly, the symphonic arrangements, for as prominent as they were, weren't that interesting either. Don't get me wrong, I liked Agony, but Labyrinth is a big step up, except for the production. The production job is awful, awful, awful and it makes it difficult to appreciate parts of this album. I know extreme metal doesn't have a history of having great-sounding albums, but Labyrinth is bad for different reasons. It's excessively loud and another unfortunate victim of the loudness wars. If you can get over that and appreciate what's buried beneath the morass of compression, this is worth checking out.
The Dillinger Escape Plan - One Of Us Is The Killer
This is a great followup to Option Paralysis and it might even be better. It's certainly more consistent, except OP doesn't have anything as banal as "CH 375 268 277 ARS" and I think it might have a few more standout songs, but One Of Us... is pretty damn excellent all around.

Yeah, their new album Vexovoid is pretty good. Very dissonant and brutal.
Some more extreme albums from 2013 I'm enjoying:
Inquisition - Obscure Verses for the Multiverse (technical black metal with Immortal-esque vocals and awesome, hypnotic riffs)
Eternium - Repelling a Solar Giant (symphonic blackened death, riyl Septic Flesh, Emperor, Dissection etc.)
2013 extreme albums I'm looking forward to:
Ihsahn - Das Seelenbrechen
Protest the Hero - Volition
Toxic Holocaust - Chemistry of Consciousness
Falkenbach - Asa
Kataklysm - Waiting for the End to Come
Germ - Grief
Pestilence - Obsideo
-
Anybody here listen to Portal?
5 minutes of it.
That was enough.

I know how you feel, when I first listened to them, it seemed like one big mess. I can't expect you're going to change your mind, but it's a fun album to put on and give another chance, if you ever feel like it

It's really nice, and unexpected, to see some love for The Faceless on this forum! :metal To me they are one of the most enjoyable bands to listen to when I'm in that brutal metal mood. As a guitar lover I absolutely adore most of their stuff, especially Keene's melodic yet technical and tricky solos. I like all their albums but like the majority of the fans I prefer Planetary Duality to basically everything ;D That album contains some of the best and simply funniest and most entertaining songs I've heard in any of metal. Also like the clean vocals presented on the latest record!
As for the rumors of them breaking up (only read them now in this thread), I guess it makes sense. The whole band has become more like "Michael Keene and the boys" by now, I understand if the other guys want to pursue other musical goals. That could work for Keene himself as well because then he could really concentrate on making his solo stuff (which The Faceless basically is already but still)
-
They're not breaking up, Keene had an interview, Evan has an oppurtunity to play with one of his favorite bands, so he's pursuing it, but he's still in The Faceless, and Keene said that they had a lot of stuff in the works :tup

Oh thanks for the info! Great to hear that, hope we get a new album soon

Anybody else excited for the new Kataklysm album? They put out a music video for the song Elevate today, what a stormer.

Their last two albums didn't really do it for me for the most part, but the new songs are awesome. This could very well be their best album.

I had forgotten they exist so haven't listened to them in a long time but will check their new song out.

anyone up for some new Ihsahn? From the samples and reviews, Das Seelenbrechen is looking to be his most experimental work to date. Can't wait to hear it!

I've liked what I've heard so far, but I'm curious to see if he'll ever top After. Eremita was pretty good, but like the new Protest The Hero album, it was simply pretty good.
-
A fairly "new" tech death band though their first and only album came out in 2011 but I think they're really good and excited to see what they come up with next.

Gonna link this thread here again, because their album came out, and you can stream it from Metalblade here if it's not on Spotify already:
NEVER MIND, stream has been taken off of Metalblade's website it would seem.
But still check the album out, Rivers Of Nihil's album is THE album you have to have this year if you ask me.

I've listened to Rain Eater and the album samples so far and its sounds really good. Will listen to it.

Just had a listen to the new Ihsahn record. The first six tracks are solid, but after that the album really gets bogged down in experimentalism and doesn't go anywhere. Overall, I wouldn't call it a mess, but it is pretty uneven and not nearly on the level of Eremita and After.
That said, "Pulse," "Regen," and "NaCl" are some of the strongest songs he's written. In fact, they're probably the album's saving grace.
I might like it better after a few more listens, but for now I'm going with 7.5/10.
-
Since I doubt a thread for them would go anywhere at all, has anybody heard Fit For An Autopsy's latest album? Came out last month and it's so good.
-
Ever since the drummer auditions, whenever I come across this term, all I can hear in my mind is "ass stream metal", courtesy of Derek Roddy.
-
Been really into Septicflesh recently. Something about the symphonic aspects of the music create a weird but awesome atmosphere. Been listening to Sumerian Daemons and Communion :metal
-
This is the most incredibly ridiculous thing I've heard in such a long time. I may well have a new contender for favorite album ever.

So the new Pestilence record is pretty good. Definitely better than I expected.

I was listening to Carcass Heartwork in my car today and wow the sound is just so good, with the low end superb.

She definitely sounds good in this song, but not quite as good as Angela. Overall the song's not the best AE have done but it's definitely decent. Looking forward to the new album.
-
If you ask me, she's light years better than Angela. Angela has never sounded good because her vocals are layered like a million fucking times and it gives off this cheap aux effect. I respect her in that she was one of the first women to make it big in an extreme metal band, but her vocals have never ever been anything to write home about.

I lost interest in AE a long time ago, all all sounds so one dimensional & so formulated. Just really dull and uninteresting.

Once a year I always found myself feeling like listen to some Dimmu Borgir. So I spun up Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia today. I still remember the first time I heard this album, never heard anything as epic and dark. It's not like Dimmu Borgir was more extreme or certainly more black metal then any other band. It was more the perfect combination of Extreme Metal with a symphony orchestra. It just hit the right spot for me. Blast this album
There's just something about their lyrics that I find poetic. Here's a part from Blessings Upon The Throne Of Tyranny:
Condemnation of life by the living dead
What a premature judgement, contradiction to the core
How unfortunate I am, cursed to spend time on a battle already won
The shame that will be guarding your grave says it all
Retreat to the crypt and make it worthwhile
Recall my sins furthermore but still be watching yours with a smile
-
If you like this band or anything, you should support them in any way you can right now since all their stuff pretty much got stolen right at the start of a tour for them.
https://www.facebook.com/riversofnihil/posts/10152236372059317?fref=nf
-
Really sucked to hear what happened to them. I'll probably throw some money in when I get some more. Shit like this shouldn't happen, especially to such a great band.
-
I agree so I'm just deciding on what to buy from them. Hate to see this happen to anybody really.
-
I figure this might be the only thread with any chance; anyone else going to Maryland Deathfest next week? I'm getting really excited, for me its the best lineup they've ever had. Still can't believe I'm gonna get to see Dark Angel!

I just wanna highlight the french tech metal band Scarve. Very underrated imo and kind of sad that Dirk Verbeuren have no time anymore for the band.

Brief update on what I've been digging lately:
Anybody else heard the new Morbus Chron or Dead Congregation albums? So far they're my favorite death metal albums of the year. (I would count the new Triptykon but I'm not sure that qualifies.) The Morbus Chron one is a pretty trippy, left-of-field experience and probably one of the most unique death metal albums I've heard. The Dead Congregation one is just raw, punishing old school DM with killer riffs.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXv-acWqp9M (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXv-acWqp9M)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCo5o2JaHEM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCo5o2JaHEM)
Also gave that Artificial Brain album that everyone's been talking about a listen. It was pretty cool but I still have to get into it some more. The vocals are awesome though. Definitely give it a spin if you're into Gorguts, Ulcerate, Portal etc.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLkJW9oez0I (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLkJW9oez0I)
Finally, in the black metal world I'm super excited for the new Saor album. It's like a folk version of Summoning with tons of epic, beautiful atmosphere.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uOhtvi_PLM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uOhtvi_PLM)
-
That Morbus Chron album is pretty good. It sounds excellent and it has some really good songs and a couple of unmemorable ones as well. Probably not consistent enough to make my top albums of the year, but a good release.
I listened to one Artificial Brain song and that was enough. I could not take those vocals seriously at all. They just sounded so ridiculous. I have the exact same problem with Inquisition and Demilich which is too bad, as all three have some pretty good music but the vocals are just... so hard to listen to.
-
Yeah, they're certainly not for everyone but I think in the case of Artificial Brain they really complement the music and give it an almost otherwordly feel if that makes sense. The kind of DM vocals I really can't stand are the brutal/slam bands who use inhales and what not (i.e. Wormed).
-
Finally getting into Atheist. I'm already a fan of a lot of tech-death bands, but Atheist's musicianship is just incredible. Awesome riffs and unreal drumming. Also heard they're coming out with a new album next year. Can't wait! :metal
-
RIP Exodus.
I'll love Gary Holt until the day I die, but giving the boot to Rob Dukes in favor for fucking Souza who'll probably quit after an album anyways is the biggest mistake Exodus could have made. Rob Dukes added venom and malice to Holt's razor sharp riffage, and was the perfect fit for the band. I'll still pick up their next album but Souza was always my least favorite vocalist of theirs by a long shot. :(
This is hitting me pretty hard guys, just a few months ago Holt had said that "Dukes is our guy. Period." after some interviewer asked about reuniting with Zetro. Jamming the 3 albums Dukes did with Exodus now (not counting the rerecording of Bonded By Blood). Dear god I'm going to miss him, absolutely killer material.
Gary Holt wrote these lyrics, but only Rob Dukes can deliver them with justice.
"You speak to the sky and no one answers back
And yet you wager the word of God is fact
The horrors we imagine in vivid clarity
Become a spectacle, your God’s atrocities
A mirror image, reflection of your soul
Just nature’s play, all her children have a role
God’s an actor, the world nature’s stage
Our fates are scripted like so many
letters on a page"
Zetro's just going to sound so fucking whiny.

New Septic Flesh is quite good even if it doesn't stand up to their last two records.

-
I've had a hard time getting into Godflesh so not really excited for it.
Duly noted you not being excited for a band who you don't even like.
-
Would you class SlipKnot as extreme metal or would you say they're more of the commercial "acceptable" side of extreme metal ?
-
They may be more "commercial" aka popular, but I'd honestly say yeah, I mean, what else can you call Iowa?
And the new song sounds vicious too. I think we'll get something a bit on the heavier side compared to All Hope is Gone which I still like a bunch.
-
For me it's Slipknot = Iowa < Volume 3 < All Hope Is Gone.
-
For me it's Slipknot = Iowa < Volume 3 < All Hope Is Gone.
I second this although there have been times where All Hope Is Gone was > than Volume 3.
-
Slipknot extreme metal? Dear god no. I mean no offense to the band or if you like them, but if you classify Slipknot as "extreme", you might as well start throwing in bands like Deftones, System of a Down and Disturbed as well. Even the heavier Slipknot albums/songs are still pretty melodic despite being heavy.
-
You can't be melodic and extreme?
You're going to have a hard time telling me Iowa is not extreme in any way. There's blast beats galore on the album and razor sharp riffage.
No arguing from me on their most recent output though.
-
Iowa is their most extreme but even that album is kinda eh. I mean I used to think bands like Slipknot and Deftones were as heavy as it got, but after I discovered genres like Death Metal and Black Metal (among many others), I just think Slipknot pales in comparison. But I mean, it's a matter of where you draw the line yourself so, 100% subjective.
-
In terms of their music they're not extreme per se but they have alot of other things that make them pretty extreme especially in their early days. I remember watching Disasterpieces for the first time and when Corey demanded everyone to sit the fuck down and Sid started beating someone in the audience I firmly planted my ass down, it just felt safe. :lol That whole concert reeks intensity. Now days people know what to do when Corey talks and it's part of their show but back then it was a diffrent thing atleast that's what i've heard from friends that saw them back then. People just got uncomfortable taking commands from someone screaming at them.
-
New Eluveitie is not too bad, haven't listened to them for quite a while, so a pleasant surprise.

So, can we touch base on Black Crown Initiate?
They're a progressive death metal band who happen to also be from Reading, PA, just like Rivers of Nihil, and mix that Opeth-esque style with 8 string guitars to an amazing effect. They have an EP out right now, which you can check out here: https://blackcrowninitiate.bandcamp.com/album/song-of-the-crippled-bull
and have a new album coming out on the 30th this month, which you can stream their single "Great Mistake" right here: https://soundcloud.com/eone-music/bci-the-great-mistake
Absolutely incredible band, and if you dig what you hear from them, please support them!
Album preorders: https://www.indiemerch.com/eonemusic/band/black-crown-initiate
Sorry if I seem like I'm just advertising for them, but this album is one of my most anticipated albums this year, I'd been jamming Song Of the Crippled Bull EP for awhile already, but I saw them live back in April or May, one of the two on the Metal Alliance Tour and while they only played through their EP, they played phenomenally, probably only behind Behemoth in performance that night, and that's saying a lot because Goatwhore were on that tour and they're never less than stellar live.
-
Hell yeah, Black Crown Initiate. Their EP is such a tease and feels way to short because that's how good it is and leaves you wanting more. The single released sounds really good and just how I want this band to make an album that feels like a continuation of their first EP and not just changing up their sound already. I hope they have a great and long career ahead of them.

Agreed on the EP being such a tease :lol
From the review I read on HeavyBlogisHeavy, it seems like you won't have to worry, and "Great Mistake" is so fucking good :metal
I hope these guys and Rivers of Nihil go on a bigger tour together than the regional one they're going on soon, I would love to see them together.

Just listened to their EP on a whim. Jesus christ.

New Exodus song. I know I'm probably a minority that thought Rob Dukes was the best vocalist Exodus ever had but seriously, Fuck. Zetro. His voice is so terrible, nasally, and fucking annoying. Ruined what could have been a decent song.
-
Sounds like Fabulous Disaster. This pleases me. Kirk's solo sucked about as much ass as I expected and it's almost like Gary or Lee or whoever played the second solo deliberately tried to suck even harder to make Kirk's sound better. I'm hoping the rest of the soloing on this album lives up to the Exodus pedigree.
-
To me it sounded more like Tempo Of the Damned pt.2
-
To me it sounded more like Tempo Of the Damned pt.2
Vocally it reminded me of Fabulous Disaster. Zetro wasn't doing any of his death growls and the only major screams were during the last lines of the chorus. Considering how much I love his vox on Tempo, I'd be more than happy with a redux of that.
-
Didn't realize Zetro does death growls, sounds more like a pissy cat to me :lol
-
Didn't realize Zetro does death growls, sounds more like a pissy cat to me :lol
Well, death growls might be a bit of a stretch. My point is Tempo was a lot more vocally varied than the earlier Zetro albums. I definitely want more of that.
-
I like the song. And I think Zetro is their best vocalist. Tempo of the damned have much better vocals but this is ok, reminds me to Fabulous disaster, too.

Heard a lot of dislike for Nick Holmes vocals on the new Bloodbath. Personally they'll take a little bit to get used to, and they weren't strong in the beginning, but that was quickly steered in the right direction and I think they sound great. Obviously he doesn't have the dynamics of Akerfeldt but I think this new Bloodbath album will be absolutely killer. :metal
-
New At the Gates was :metal
New Job for a Cowboy was :metal which I'm happy cause I stopped listening to them for a long time but their new song was just killer.
New Bllodbath was :metal :metal and yeah I think Akerfeldt's vocals were better and perfect for the band, I dug Holmes' vocals on this song which was just awesome. November has some really quality releases coming up.
The end of this year is just going to be fantastic.

I highly suggest you do. I just did myself and it's fantastic, one of the best extreme metal albums of the year. Love the artwork too.
Been on an extreme metal kick lately. Here's what I've been listening to in the past few days:
Mass Grave - Mass Grave (heavy as balls grindcore)
Mare Cognitum - Phobos Monolith (very spacey and ambient BM, for fans of Darkspace)
Ash Borer - Ash Borer (Cascadian BM)
Huldra - Black Tides (post-metal in the vein of Cult of Luna, Mouth of the Architect etc.)
Inferi - The Path of Apotheosis (tech-death meets neoclassical with stunning results)
Revocation - Deathless (possibly their best album yet)
Nasum - Inhale/Exhale (One of the best grindcore albums I've heard.)

A song by the death metal band Horrendous and from their new album. I'd never heard of them before but this song is pretty damn cool. I might have to check out the full album.
I highly suggest you do. I just did myself and it's fantastic, one of the best extreme metal albums of the year. Love the artwork too.
Just gave it a listen on bandcamp. Very nice. A surprising amount of variety for what is, essentially, a straight up death metal album. Good enough for a buy methinks.

Okay people, it's time to stop the hate train on Job for a Cowboy. They're easily one of the best modern death metal bands to have emerged, and if this song doesn't change your mind on that, then I guess nothing will. This album is going to be a fucking masterpiece.

What a shitty day.
Black Tusk's bassist Jonathan Athon was involved in a motorcycle accident last night, which involved an 85 year old man running a stop sign and hitting Jonathan Athon and his girlfriend. His girlfriend walked away with minor injuries, but he's been in a medically induced coma since, and while it's not official, a band who are extremely close friends just posted a RIP message for him. If it's true this one's going to be a gut punch to the stomach. He was one of my favorite bassists and looked like one of the friendliest guys you could ever meet. :(
EDIT: It's official, what a god damned tragedy, 32 is way to young to pass, and from a fucking jackoff stop sign runner no less.
RIP Jonathan, you'll be sorely missed.

Pretty cool video from Psycroptic for their single they released in November, "Echoes to Come"
Looks and feels like a metal music video from the 90's. And as I said when I first heard the song, fantastic as frick. Early 2015 is shaping up to be a beast.

Don't think this has been mentioned before but there's a new Napalm Death album coming out next month.
This track from it kicks ass :metal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTpxkcjBYxw (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTpxkcjBYxw)
-
I've never seen the deal about grindcore, or Napalm Death. I listen to a lot of extreme bands, and I also listen to bands who tend to have shorter songs (whether it's Converge or Touche Amore to name two examples), but Grindcore just feels like a joke. I know Napalm Death has several album with many songs being below 1 minute, and some being under the 10 second mark. I just don't get it. It's not too extreme or anything, but it just feels like a joke, because the songs are over before they even start.
-
Grindcore is awesome. It's not for always, but a nice kick in the teeth is needed every once in awhile, and grindcore shows are some of the best live shows you can go to.
Gridlink, Cretin, Columns, Rotten Sound, Wormrot are all pretty friggin great, and there's countless other great grindcore bands as well.

Metalsucks have begun their "Albums That Will Fuck Your Face Off In 2015" run, and the first band they've shown is a pretty nasty grindcore band called Organ Dealer. They've only got a demo right now, although they have a full length ready for release. Good fucking stuff.

Another new Psycroptic song has been debuted, with a nice little video as well. This is shaping up to be a year favorite, Psycroptic are about on point as a band can possibly be.
-
Psycroptic are well cool, I just wish they would add guitar solos once in a while. It would a ton of depth to their sound.
-
Eh, I like that they don't really do that, the music is already insane enough, I like that they don't wast time with solos to add unnecessary flair when their musicianship is already ridiculous.
I can't get over how good the 3 songs they've shown have been. I really don't want to wait any longer for the album to come out. While I really liked their last album, this one's shaping up to be out of this world. I love when bands can step up their game with each release. These guys are so underrated.
-
I mean, obviously their music is very good, and I'm not saying that they should solo on every track for at least half a minute. But there are quite a few tracks where a solo would fit in very well, I think, and it would add a ton of depth to their sound when used correctly.
Still kickass though, and I can't wait for their album. :metal

Really like what I'm hearing from it so far. If this trend continues it'll easily beat Unsung Heroes.
On another note, those new Psycroptic songs sound killer. Can't wait for the new album!
-
Got the Ensiferum pre ordered, heard the title cut and that was more than enough to convince me that One mna Army is a return to form.
-
The new Ensiferum album is just great. A huge step up from their last one.
-
What's new in the world of doom metal? I used to listen to doom and black metal a lot but it's been a while. I was a huge fan of My Dying Bride and Anathema years ago. My friend plays in Evoken, who have become pretty well known in the doom metal world.
-
Well there's a few things happening, there's this band called Pallbearer that are like the bee's knees. Clean vocals, aside from one song all of their songs are 8+ minutes and they never overstay their welcome. Great musicianship and they great crafters of song. And then there's Usnea who play Doom laced with Death Metal and their album last year was in my top 5, the guys blow me away.
There's also this band called Elder and they're coming out with an album called Lore which is just wonderful as well. I'll leave it at that for now but I love me some Doom Metal, especially when it's laced with other stuff!
-
Pallbearer released a new album last year called Foundations of Burden that was really good. Yob also released the best (IMO) stoner/doom/post metal album of the year last year called Clearing The Path To Ascend. Excellent, excellent album, but they've been around for quite a while so I wouldn't exactly call them 'new.' There's also Finnish band Kuolemanlaakso. They also released a new album last year, Tulijoutsen, which was also really damn good. They play more death-doom than straight up doom and their lyrics are all in Finnish, so if that bugs you then you might want to skip these guys. I think they only have two albums and an EP out so they're fairly new.
-
I'm going to check Pallbearer out. I'll see if I can find them on Spotify.
-
Pallbearer and Yob are fantastic.
If you like them definitely check out Earth's latest album "Primitive and Deadly." It's not quite as dynamic as the other two, but it makes up for that with its atmosphere.
-

I checked out Pallbearer briefly and I wasn't too blown away by it yet. The music is good, but something about the vocals is throwing me off. I also checked out a couple of Usnea tracks and I really liked it. That's more along the lines of what I like. Something dark and dreary. I want to weep when I hear it and feel like slitting my wrists six ways from Sunday. That's how I like my doom. Nortt is perfect when it comes to that. It makes me want to ride in a hearse with the music blaring from the speakers.
I'm listening to Yob right now and I'm reallly getting into it.

Yes! I thought most doom metal sounded the same until I heard these guys. I think someone referred to them as funeral doom metal. It's just so fucking dreary and makes you want to crawl into a hole and let the rain wash you away.

Relapse Records has a free sampler for download commemorating their 25 year anniversary. It has 184 songs on it. Check it out. It asks for a donation but you can just put 0 if you want it for free. I'm downloading it now. I remember when I worked at the local college radio station i would love getting the Relapse samplers. There are always some interesting bands on there to be discovered.

Got my promo of the new Barren Earth album the other day and it's killer. The new singer is so damn good. The Vault is definitely one of their best songs.
The new A Forest of Stars album is pretty good, but I'm not liking it quite as much as the last one. That said, it's really dense (like all of their albums) so it needs more time to soak in.
And there's this atmospheric black metal band called Ghost Bath that just put out a new album called Moonlover. If you're a Deafheaven fan check this out immediately. Seriously, this is some phenomenal stuff.
-
I'm really looking forward to hearing the new Barren Earth, the debut is a classic, the follow up I wasn't too fussed about though.
-
Ghostbath's new album, I love the heck out of it.
Them vocals=== The realest, bestest vocals.

Yeah, the vocals are awesome. They convey so much intensity and emotion. I can't understand the lyrics at all but I can still feel a strong connection with the vocals and music.

Indian have broken up and canceled all future dates. :(
Never even got a chance to catch them live.

Strange, nothing on their website or their Facebook page.

From Psycho California Fest's Facebook page:
Indian wrote us today with the following: "Indian has come to the point where we can no longer be a band. We have cancelled the few shows we had coming up, including our appearance at Psycho California. We are sincerely sorry to the organizers, who have been nothing but accommodating, and to the people who were wanting to see us play the fest." - INDIAN

This is straight up amazing. I've listened to it a couple of times now and this album has serious potential to be my album of the year with a single as insane as this, maybe even more than album of the year. I was expecting to really anticipate this record but this song...
-
I want to pick up a Morbid Angel album. Covenant or Altar's of Madness seems to be the two to pick from? Or should I go somewhere else album wise?
-
Altars of Madness would be my pick.
-
I'm always looking for good death metal that doesn't overuse blast beats. I naturally like the more thrashy, progressive or melodic death metal.
DM bands I like:
Death
Atheist
Cynic
Opeth if they count
Pestilence if they count
..yeah that's pretty much it. The death metal I do like, I LOVE but the genre as a whole has never clicked with me.

Band called Black Fast kind of are. Got a bit of black metal in their veins as well but they at times resemble Death in such a good way. :metal

Hadn't heard about this project but the line-up was so crazy and random I had to check it out.
Sean Z (Daath, Chimaira): vocals
Attila Csihar (Mayhem): vocals
Frédéric Leclercq (Dragonforce): guitar, bass, synth, vocals
Stephane Buriez (Loudblast): guitar
Heimoth (Seth): bass
Joey Jordison (VIMIC, ex Slipknot): drum
Never thought I would see members from Mayhem, Dragonforce and Slipknot well ex-Slipknot in the same band.

My copy showed up yesterday - I've been wanting this for a long, long time after seeing the footage from the Oslo show online 4-5 years ago. I'm glad that they play a lot of the Abrahadabra songs, and the band sounds awesome with the orchestra and choir behind them. The Oslo show is a more of a formal presentation, and the Wacken show is more of the metal, "are you guys having any fun?" type of show, so it's a nice little difference in vibe between the two.
-
Over seven years, deathlike silence has filled the halls of the world’s biggest black metal forge, DIMMU BORGIR, whilst powers have been gathering to resurrect the band right in time for their 25th anniversary. Now they finally mark their return with a vicious work of art that can be defined as timeless in the truest sense of the word: »Eonian«.
The songwriting core of DIMMU BORGIR furthermore consists of charismatic vocalist Shagrath, as well as the string wizards Silenoz and Galder, but other familiar faces also emerge from the darkness: Drummer Daray and keyboarder Gerlioz are still part of the team, and Gaute Storaas helped with the choral arrangements for the majestic voices of the Schola Cantrum Choir.
The cover artwork was designed in fascinating detail by Zbigniew M. Bielak (GHOST, BEHEMOTH, MAYHEM).
This tenth full-length record will see the light of spring on May the 4th, and it will contain 10 new tracks, produced by the band itself and engineered by Jens Bogren. Emerging from the dark minds of the three songwriters, »Eonian« follows a philosophical concept, dealing with the illusion of time:
“Time, when not approaching it from the construct we're used to can't be defined and thus it is illusory”, explains axemaster Silenoz. “There's only an 'eternal now', which the album title is already hinting at. When we travel between the worlds seen and unseen, the perception of time ceases to exist, it has no function. Our energy is our torch and our compass when we make rifts and pierce through the veil - when we go beyond.”
Vocalist Shagrath adds: “»Eonian« represents the illusion of time, everything that is and always has been. For us, it also marks the 25th anniversary of DIMMU BORGIR and the album itself is a tribute to our own history and the Norwegian black metal history.”
On February 23rd, DIMMU BORGIR will unveil their first single 'Interdimensional Summit', that will be released as a 7'' vinyl EP, providing a first taste of the upcoming album.

New Dimmu video! I love it - I don't think they've ever had a song where the orchestration carries the entire hook. Purists will hate it though. At least they went for broke for the video.
-
I actually like it, not very BM at all, but a great song even though it sounds a lot like Nightwish.... :yarr
-
That song didn't do much for me sadly, I kind of wanted a more raw and in your face sound, especially as a first song. This sounded a bit bland to me. It's nice to have them back and hopefully the album brings a bit more to it.

Another new Dimmu Video: Council of Wolves and Snakes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ws18_MZ-lw
"Council Of Wolves And Snakes", the new video from Norwegian symphonic black metallers DIMMU BORGIR, can be seen below. The song is taken from the band's new album, "Eonian", which will be released on May 4 via Nuclear Blast.
The songwriting core of DIMMU BORGIR furthermore consists of charismatic vocalist Shagrath, as well as the string wizards Silenoz and Galder, but other familiar faces also emerge from the darkness: drummer Daray and keyboardist Gerlioz are still part of the team, and Gaute Storaas helped with the choral arrangements for the majestic voices of the Schola Cantrum Choir.
Shagrath states: "It's a song that sticks out from the rest of the album, it's DIMMU BORGIR going into an experimental direction, but you can also find a lot of black metal inspiration in the middle section of the song. We are a band that has never been afraid of trying out new directions and artistically, this is surely a very interesting and different track."
A mix of their black metal sound and some wacky experimentation. You can't blame these guys for never trying something new, though I do hope the record does have more of the black metal moments than these songs.
-
The songwriting is really good, it's almost proggy, great song, but yes I want some BM to digest on the album.
-
Why wasn't a track like Archaic Correspondence released as a single???
Damn, that's an awesome song! :metal
The second half of Eonian is definitely the highlight for me.
-
Despite the lack of guitars and BM songs, the album is very strong.
In terms of production and song writing this is easily Dimmu's best work to date.
Still waiting for an official release in Australia, as usual with NB releases we seem to get them a week or two later.

They're definitely more "mellow" in terms of BM and how they used to be. I actually get a Therion vibe from some of their songs.
-
Therion, exactly I get the same vide too, along with Nightwish and even some Septicflesh.
-
Seems to be some complaints about too much choir in many of the songs, can't say I agree. For the most part I feel they're creating a nice atmosphere. I do think however that since they use choir instead of ICS Vortex vocals nowdays, the sound is a bit less sinister because of the choir funnily enough.
It interesting though that when you compare Eonian to Death Cult Armageddon for example the latter sounds like the most sinister album in existence compared to Eonian and yet Dimmu got flack by BM purist for selling out with that album.
I still think that despite Dimmu not being very BM anymore, the production and the songs are still epic and atmospheric.

So, a new Bloodbath album is coming out in a few months. :metal
Also, the first video for Eric Peterson's Dragonlord - the first new album for them in 13 years? I love the first album, but never ended up picking up the second. Such great, thrashy black metal that isn't just full speed ahead at a bazillion miles an hour. This disc has a female vocalist as well, which I believe is new for them.

^^Love Kalmah, haven't heard them in a while though so that was cool.
I just saw this cool episode by Banger TV about the Icelandic Black Metal scene:

Some really stuff that i've never heard of. The only band I knew of was Solstafir but i've never heard that they started as a BM band.
Listening to Zhrine - Unortheta right now, killer and very ambient stuff.

NILE - Vile Nilotic Rites (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KV3VvBBL6gI)

I remember buying Nile's In Their Darkened Shrines back in 2002 or 2003 and hating it. I usually like my death metal to be catchy (I can't stand brutal death metal at all with the "gor-gor'gorgorgor" vocals), and the album was too much of a blasting assault on my ears. I haven't cared for them since...
...until now. I got sick of listening to power metal for a month straight, put on some black metal for Halloween and then decided to give a few Nile albums a shot since I saw that they have a new one out. They're definitely sounding much more fresh to these ears, which have become more accustomed to death and extreme metal over the last 16 years. I've listened to just about every album in their catalog and really have a new appreciation for them.
-
Yea I've been listening to a fair bit of Nile recently as well. I've got the new album queued up to listen to, sometime this week. Annihilation of the Wicked is hitting the spot :metal

This is quite an old post, but I absolutely love Inferi. Their re-recording of one of their older albums they released this year is absolutely outstanding.

Stumbled upon this Dimmu cover: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_3fCjVCdVw
It's a pretty good cover actually but I just laughed so hard on the diversity of the people involved. The drummer and guitarist takes it serious, the bassist of course took it a bit too serious with corpsepaint and a kiss wig and the singer seems to be in somekind of a happy place. :lol

Good cover, good drums and vocals but I agree, it's hilarious! :rollin
I've never paid attention to the guitars in this song, they are simple but I liked it.

Not that deathcore is anything new but this sounds like a new breed in a way:
LORNA SHORE - To the Hellfire (OFFICIAL VIDEO) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyYmS_iBcy4&ab_channel=CenturyMediaRecords)
It's SO over the top in everyway but the thing is I kinda dig it but also kinda laugh at it. The drummer is playing stuff only possible with triggers one hundred percent but that's so common these days that no one seems to bat an eye. I know he still has to play it in a way but it still not the same imo.
The singer incorparates every type of growl and even throws in some pig squeeling.
I actually feel kinda old listening to this because I feel it's a genre for the younger/newer generation of metal fans honestly and to be clear I mean nothing bad about that, only that i'm old and probably don't understand it it.
-
WTF was that?
I have no words, it hurt my ears I had to turn off after less than a minute.
Yes I am too old :metal

Yea it's quite the challenge to listen to.
-
Fuck, I thought that was quite impressive, so intense. Not something I'd probably listen to but damn respect to these boys for pushing the boundaries and producing something unique. The black metal vibes kept me interested as I'm not normally a fan of the deathcore kind of thing.

Yea it's impressive, as a drummer I mostly look at his performance and truth be told he has the speed and technique to pull it off which is impressive. He uses heeltoe which is pretty common in extreme metal drumming but as far as i'm aware it's heavily relied on using triggers to get power and balance with each stroke hitting the bassdrum. It would sound like crap without it.
Now with that being said since it's so common too use triggers it's also become the norm for the quest to play faster and faster music and that's the part that kinda get's hilarious to me.

Not a new band but i've never listen to them. Bastian Thusgaard from Soilwork plays drums.
-
Seen a bunch of live clips with Lorne Shore and I have to say they really pull off their music live which is really impressive. The vocalist and drummer really delivers their stuff live.
Really not my cup of tea but it's interesting to follow the new bands and new breeds of music out there. They seems to have really taken the genre to a new level.
