Title: 2014-02-13 - O2 Apollo - Manchester, UK
Post by: John94 on June 24, 2013, 06:43:33 AM
I'm going! Been on the last two occasions to Manchester.

Also asked the Apollo staff via twitter if the event is all seating and it is, like 2012 shows.

Tickets on general sale on Friday 28th June! (O2 Priority members will be on sale on Wednesday 26th June)

Anyone know any good hotels near the venue?

I'll probably make an appearance, had some great seats last time, front and dead center of the balcony. Funny thing is I got those last minute, strange how they hadn't been reserved.

I have booked a room at Premier Inn City Centre. It is 2 minutes from Manchester Piccadilly station an about 20 minutes walk from o2 Apollo. There are other hotels that are a bit closer, but I have only good experiences with the Premier Inn chain + they have a great breakfast menu

Thanks FrostbiteZ.
what is security like at the venue?
Tried videoing at Leeds 2011 but due to security only managed just over 30 minutes. (This is available on the Hub for anyone who would like it.)
My seats are in the stalls, will I be in with a chance of getting some decent video do you know?

I can speak for him. He managed to tape a good part of the show without great difficulties 2012, so I guess there won't me major problems this time either.  :tup

I hope so. Cause my plan is to try record an entire show at either Manchester or Wolverhampton

I plan on doing the same in Firenze or Rome or both. What I have come to call "The Frostbitez Files" have become the diamond in my collection, so keep them going :D

Won't you attend Wembley this time, though?

Thx :)
Wembley is also on my schedule and for sure I will try to get some footage, but for Wembley I have chosen floor seating (got 3rd row on JP's side) and in Manchester and Wolverhampton I have opted for balcony as I think it must be less tiring for the arms recording a whole show while sitting down

And right now I'm crunching the numbers to see if I should make a detour to Amsterdam before heading back to Denmark for the Copenhagen date

It would seem, the middle stalls aren't on sale or have sold out, as I went on DT.net and looked for best Platinum VIP tickets and it was the myung side stalls row E... Thats not very good for the price, i'd expect to be front and central for that money!

Different websites get different sections allocated. Try ticketmaster, seetickets, ticketline, or livenation

Fair point, but not always. Certain sites have contracts with promoters to get the best allocations.

Was disappointed when I heard the band weren't coming to Scotland this time and gutted when it was confirmed to be an 'Evening With' tour.

Thought it would be a bit too expensive to justify coming down to England to see them. But then I noticed that I could get a cheaper train if I split my tickets and decent accommodation cheaper than I thought too. So I've just gone and bought a ticket for Manchester  :metal Figured I might not get another chance to see them do an Evening With show, so just decided to go for it.

So I'll be travelling down to Manchester (most likely on my own!  :omg: ) from Perth. Never been to Manchester, aside from a stop off at the airport when I was a kid.

Not sure what my view is gonna be like though, I'm in seat X3 - seems to be second row of the rear stalls, on JPs side. Anyone know what the view will be like from there, especially since it's so far to the right hand side?

Like your good self, Krands85, I am travelling down from Scotland (not far from Glasgow, so not quite the distance that you've got!!) DT done this before, where they missed Scotland out on the first leg, but came up for the second. However, I'm not sure if it would be an evening with, so, like you, I've decided to travel from Glasgow.

Slightly annoyed about the allocation of tickets. General sale was today at 10.00. I was logged on bang on 10 and used the link on the apollo site which took me to ticketmaster. Best available seat, stalls, row N seat 45. This is on Myungs side and is 2 seats from the very end. My question is, where have the tickets for the 1st 13 rows gone? I don't believe they would've sold as many as that in the space of 1 minute, especially at £55 per ticket. I checked seetickets as well, best they had was row M, centre, which would've been slightly better but I've never used this ticket company before.

The last time I was in Manchester was to see Transatlantic at the academy. Think I got lucky with hotel though. Booked the Travelodge Upper Brook Street and it only cost £20. Family room all to myself!! I believe (correct me if I'm wrong), that it's only approx 15 minute walk from there to the venue?

Just need to decide if i'm driving down or taking the train.

They've been on sale via the Official Dream Theater site since Tuesday, and Via O2 Priority (TicketMaster) since Wednesday.

Also, as covered a few posts up, different websites get different allocations

I looked at the priority on Wednesday afternoon and the seats offered where even further back that what I got. I don't seem to get luck with priority  :lol. Always seem to end up getting better seats on the general sale. Just thought I would've got better than what i did. Nevertheless, I am happy that I will be there  :metal

I am also interested to see how many people are travelling to this show from up north. Pity Wolverhampton wasn't the following night. I would have went to that 1 as well. They got London and Wolverhampton the wrong way round.

Yeah that's the hotel I looked at last night and it was £20 for the night. https://goo.gl/maps/Fpiq6 - That shows the route from the hotel to the venue on Google maps, which suggests a 15minute walk like you say (probably 10minutes for a fast walker like me ;D) Seems to be about double that distance from Piccadilly train station to the Travelodge - 1.4miles - so around a 20-30minute walk.

You can only book train tickets a max of 12 weeks in advance, but it looks like you'd be able to get 2 direct singles from Glasgow Central and back again for £16 each if you book far enough in advance.

I just emailed ticketmaster to ask a few questions about timing and opening acts... this was my reply.

Thank you for your email.

I am sorry for any inconvenience caused, but unfortunately accurate runtime information is usually only available on the day of the event after any sound checks have been completed. The only information we have at the moment is the the door time, door open at 7pm.

 >:( I really hope that's a mistake. The only reason I could justify the time and expense of coming all the way down from Scotland was the fact that it was going to be 'An Evening With'.

But now I've already bought my ticket and booked accommodation, I'll be gutted if there is going to be support and only 2 hours max of DT  :-\

Lets hope it is and not a support band. They have seen the positive feedback Rush got for bringing a string section. So maybe they have thought lets play the entire SFAM with strings/orchestra

Even DT's own tour page now says An Evening With Dream Theater. That was not there when they announced the dates

Yeah I'm coming down for the Manchester gig too, though the site I use - National Rail Enquiries - doesn't let me book that far ahead yet. Did you get a good deal on your tickets? The cheapest 'advance' fare tickets usually aren't released until 12 weeks before the date of travel.
Title: Re: UK tour dates. Travelling from Scotland?

Check virgin rail or the trainline website. You'll find all the details on there. Most journeys change at Preston but there is a direct train that leaves central at just after 11
Title: Re: UK tour dates. Travelling from Scotland?
Post by: krands85 on November 17, 2013, 09:56:19 AM
Well I'm coming from Perth, so I'll probably go through to Edinburgh and change there. Then there are direct trains to Manchester every couple of hours from Waverley/Haymarket. Looks like it will be about £48 for me in total when the Advance tickets are released.

Apollo is in a pretty rough area so wouldn't be expecting a nice pub meal.  There is a McDonalds about 3 or 4 min walk away though if you're starving.  Otherwise you could just eat in the city centre before heading up to the theatre.  Venue itself is normally good though in terms of acoustics as it is a proper old theatre even if it is a little run down.

Here's hoping we get the same set list as mainland Europe is getting.

Not necessarily my favourite songs but lots of stuff I haven't seen live before (most of the Awake stuff) and also stuff I haven't seen for 15 years (Scenes stuff) so excited to see some of those songs.

I emailed the venue about 3 weeks ago to ask what time the band would be on (so i could book train and see if i needed to finish work early) and didn't hear a thing from them! With tickets saying doors at 7 thought the band would be on at 8ish and finish around 10:45-11
Working til 6 and wont get to the venue til 8! Great!  ::)

It would look like I have to buy my ticket from GetMeIn now... Hasn't been any on ticket master for a while so can I print off a ticket from them?

For anyone staying at the travelodge in upper Brook Street, the 147 bus goes to it from piccalilly train station.

Good shout about getting train to Oxford road. Only takes 2 minutes from Piccadilly then it's only a mile to the hotel. Think this will be the route i take. 4 train journeys for me in the one day just to get there but it's definitely gonna be worth it.

That sounds like a bit of a bugger, hope everything goes smoothly! Thankfully I only have to change trains once, in Edinburgh.

Meant to ask this the other day, then someone asking the same question in the Wembley gig thread which reminded me - what were the crowd like for anyone who saw them in Manchester on the ADTOE tour? Were most people standing and really getting into it etc.? The Glasgow gig was ridiculous - if it had gotten any livelier, a funeral was liable to break out! Lots of people were seated for the whole show and we even had people behind shouting at us to sit down a few times  :-\ Hope it's better down south next week.

Glasgow train change at Preston. Only reason I am doing that is cos I won a freebie on virgin rail for first class. Can't go direct from Glasgow on virgin. The changes don't look too bad at all. By using this freebie it keeps the cost down.

Anyone know how much the merchandise is likely to be? The new shirts are 20 notes on the dream theater site.

Glasgow crowds have a reputation for going slightly insane at gigs - I doubt Manchester will compare, purely because nowhere in Englandshire can compare...

Anyway what a show! Especially the lighting!

Thanks to frostbiteZ for the ticket!

Only let down would be the audience, especially in the balcony, I swear I was one of the only one nodding/singing/sometimes fistpumping! Wasn't much atmosphere at all

I spotted some mistakes by JP well he had an issue towards the beginning of the show with his rig, but in finally free he hesitated at turning distortion off into acoustic section :P

MM also seemed to go out of beat in ToT

Appart from that, great night!

Very pleasant surprise!!
I (due to trains and work etc) expected to walk into the venue and hear TLG and having missed the first few tracks and Blob's intro ............

........... & it started half an hour late! im sure i was the only one happy about that  ;D was expecting another Madrid and missing IT .. but so glad it wasn't a technical issue
Great gig! band on top form but i agree about the crowd, pretty quiet at first on the floor and especially near me, think the girl next to me was glad when it finished tbh!
But it's a DT gig and i will always enjoy it even if people around me think i'm a nutjob! :yarr  :metal

Wow Frostbitz, well done for getting this taped, did you manage any more?
I took my camera but my seat was right next to the entrance to the balcony where security stood and they where red hot on anyone with anything that looked like a video camera, but not with mobile phones, iphones and ipads.
The show was brilliant and the band really looked like they where enjoying themselves. The sound was excellent and the bass was clearly audible.
I was sat next to a rather large guy who was reading a newspaper before the gig started then by the Shattered Fortress appeared to be fast asleep. Don't know how he managed that.
A BIG well done to the guys in the forum that have contributed to the videos, they where excellent and added to the enjoyment.

Really great gig! I hadn't realy listened to the new album much at all, but it certainly sounds great when they play it live. I think playing songs like Dance of Eternity to a metronome is making it sound worse. Just at times where it goes mental on the drums, it seems to be less tight. Regardless, that's me being mega picky.

Sound was great, we were sat one row from the sound desk so perfect, nice and loud sound. I do miss the days of standing, i still think progressive nation was such a better atmosphere, everyone jumping and going mental. This was a nice change of pace, but most people just stood for the whole gig anyway.

The production is definitely on another level, I don't mind the set staying the same, I never go to multiple gigs of each leg anyway! It makes for a better show

Good night, good performance all around. It was definitely louder than past occasions, I think a few people left during the first set due to the noise. Guy behind me stayed sitting down so like a good guy I stayed sat down for a while, then he left so I was back up.

Was going to ask if there was any news on bootlegs, seeing as the two shows before at Manchester were recorded. I can't seem to log in to dimeadozen to check. If anyone has any news/updates then please share as I would like to add this to my personal collection of DT shows I have been told -- plus I had to leave after IT to catch my bus as I had uni classes today.

I see you are working on the video FrostbiteZ, thanks a lot. I'll be sure to check that out when it is completed!

I was pretty sceptical about this gig after not liking the latest record at all (and not being very impressed with ADToE either) but as I hadn't found anyone to buy the ticket a couple of weeks back I decided to buy train tickets and go after all and, to be fair, it was the best DT show I've seen to date. Thought JLB was excellent and some of the visuals were pretty good too. Nice chunk of Awake. Even Illumination Theory was passable.

Have to say though, to all those of you saying how loud it was... you really need to go and see a Swans gig or something!

I am getting older now, so my ears are just one part that is beginning to fail, I'd be quicker telling you what still works properly.
I got to see Motorhead at Hull City Hall back in the 1980's, it was that loud that if you go back into the City Hall now I'm sure you can still hear the Ace of Spades still echoing around the hall.

Great gig. Certainly better than last time out. I loved the setlist and would rather have a dvd of this show than last tour. JLB was awesome. Easily surpassed my high expectations.
And I didn't think it was loud, though I was a good way back, just behind and right of the mixxing desk. I saw ManOwaR years ago, now that was loud. I couldn't hear properly for about a week afterwards. They were world record holders for loudest gig at that time.

I can't say how loud it was, since my earplugs protected me from that  :P But the sound seemed pretty good for the most part, though bassier moments were occasionally a bit strong, even with the low notes on JR's iPad. Seemed to be some technical issues a couple of times (dunno if that's why the show started almost 30min late), but they didn't detract from anything.

The crowd weren't particularly animated, but it was still a massive improvement on the Glasgow gig last time. At least here, nearly everyone on the floor was standing! I'd love to see DT at a standing gig in Italy or South America somewhere, that would be a great experience. The setlist wasn't to my taste unfortunately, but it was still great fun and the guys seemed to be having a blast on stage. The videos were really cool and the intermission Youtube compilation was hilarious  :lol though I struggled to take my eyes off the band to watch the vids properly most of the time!

Next time I see them, I really need to get a spot in the centre, near the front!

I took a few minutes worth of video of TEI, ToT and IT, but there's no point uploading it since Frostbitez vids will be far superior  :lol

Oh and James was brilliant, this must be an incredibly demanding tour for him, but he was great  :tup

Very interesting that they changed the ending to The Shattered Fortress. MM still plays the rhythm, but the second time he played it on the snare and guitar/bass joined. Was this the first show they did this at?

I think GasparXR really wants the show - look at how many times he's leaching off the torrent.  :lol

Wait, what? :lol

While I was downloading the show, I looked to see who all the leachers were, and your name showed up like 20 times, all downloading 0mb. I thought it was hilarious!

Haha, that's really strange. I'm almost done listening to the show now, on Finally Free. James was really on fire for the most part, but I thought he kind of fell short for Along for the Ride and Lie. The Pursuit of Truth is still not as good as the album but it keeps getting a little better every night.

I’m back, folks!

On Thursday night, I attended this, my 8th Dream Theater show... And it was quite possibly the best one I've ever been too. And my goodness, am I glad I decided to take a break from the forums and not look at any spoilers!

I just want to share my thoughts on the show... doubtful that anyone looking at this thread is trying particular hard to avoid spoilers, but might as well warn about them anyway

Everything about the show was just spot on. The instrumentalists, the vocals, the lighting, the video show... even the song choices and the way the setlist was constructed was pretty much perfect for me.

Where to begin? Well, the beginning I guess. I was expecting to be pretty damn pumped when FAS came on over the speakers, but the way in which they presented it was something I didn’t see coming. An orchestral arrangement (or at least, without drums or guitars), and that opening projection was just about the most epic thing I’ve ever seen at a DT concert. I cannot express in words how excited I got to suddenly see the WDADU man brought to life on the screen, and how all the remaining album covers came to life and interconnected from there.

Unfortunately, it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that they were going to open with TEI. Talk about anti-climactic. I don’t hate the song, but it certainly doesn’t get me particularly excited in any way. Anyway, it doesn’t matter... things only continued to get more and more awesome from then on...

TSF was really fucking unexpected. Seriously, if you’d asked me to guess which song they would play second, considering their extensive back catalogue, this would have been among the last couple of songs I would have thought of. It came completely out of context, with none of the other twelve step songs preceding it, and without MP behind the drums. Something didn’t quite feel right about it... but I am glad that I got to see that song live.

OTBOA. Again, don’t really care for it. Moving on.

The Looking Glass came next. Up until this point, I’ve never been too crazy about the new album as a whole, but this is just one of those songs that really makes me appreciate the slightly different direction Dream Theater has been heading in. It sounded awesome and I had a great time singing along at the chorus.

Then... I pretty much died and went to heaven. Trial of Tears.
OH. MY. GOD!!
I cannot express in words how much I fucking love everything about this song. Especially in the last 6 months or so, I’ve just been going crazy for it and listening to it whenever the mood takes me. Of all the songs they could have picked, I was ecstatic when I heard those opening guitar notes and that little wood block roll!

Seriously, they could have ended the show after that song and I would have been happy that I got my money’s worth. But no, they continued to be fucking awesome and played EM with a new cartoon animation that as always, was delightful fun to watch. On the one hand, it seems a little strange to have something like that going on during such a complex and technical piece of music, as if taking attention away from the players, but it’s an incredibly creative way of keeping the audience involved and I appreciated it a lot. The drum solo didn’t go on too long, either. It was just right. :)

And, yeah. They closed the set with AFTR followed by BAI. Another song that I’m not crazy about, followed by one they played for the last time I came out to see them. Still, this is DT - even their “ok” songs are still pretty awesome... :D

How awesome it was of them to actually have something going on during the intermission. And it just goes to show how well these guys know their audience. I can pretty much guarantee that most people in the audience were familiar with some of or all of those videos, but to see them played back on a big screen, having been specially picked by the band was just unbelievably awesome. And the whole thing segued really nicely back into the action...

THE MIRROR. Oh my god... another song that I had always wanted to see live, yet had always eluded me up to this point. And they followed it up with Lie, of course. Two incredibly awesome songs I had always wanted to see live since the first time. But the awesomeness didn’t end there. The announcement that they were going to play a few more songs from Awake to celebrate it’s 20th anniversary, as well as give some attention to SFAM - wow, that really was the moment. I turned to my best mate who was with me and exchanged a knowing look, realising that this was going to a gig I would never forget.

From there on out, I guess it’s pretty much self-explanatory. But what was really freaky to me was how often it felt like the guys were reading my mind and figuring out which songs from the albums would make me the most happy. They played the entire second half of the Awake album, which I prefer massively over the first. Illumination Theory was incredibly powerful, as expected. Right before the encore, I discussed with my mate what songs we wanted them to encore with, and I said I would love Overture/Strange, and that’s exactly what they did. Only they didn’t stop there. They then launched into TDoE, which frankly I don’t think I could ever tire of seeing life. I was then hoping they would skip over OLT/TSCO and go into Finally Free, because a) they did exactly that in 2009 at this same venue, and b) TSCO has been played to death over the last few years. I didn’t think they actually would comply with my unspoken wish... but they did. And I got possibly the biggest chills of the evening towards the end of this last song. What a perfect ending to an incredible show.

I’d like to round things off with some very awesome numbers. Of the 18 songs they played, only 5 of them I had seen live prior to this gig. Of the remaining 13, only 6 of them were from the new album. And I’ve been to see DT 8 times now. All these statistics combine to make one incredibly awesome fact - these guys never cease to keep things fresh and exciting enough for me to want to keep coming back again and again. :D

“Awesome” tally: 10

Great gig. Big difference between their opening show in Porto and this one. You can really tell that they are tuned in now

Nicely shot video. You werent zoom happy and you kept the band in the shot most of the time. Steady hand too. And thanks for not showing the video screen except for the middle section. Good job!

I don't necessarily have the whole band in the shot the whole time or the videoscreen and yes I'm aware that my hand is not that steady

Of course I can. I'm just not a fan of recordings done with internal mics. Sounds garbage 95% of the time.

I did tweak rbose1 recording slightly adding some more bass to it.

I'll upload the whole package to dimeadozen.org. It's a good chance to boost my ratio a bit.
