I'll be there  :D

It's gonna be amazing, seems like I'm gonna meet a lot of DT fans I've been talking to for years! Also, being the first date in the tour, I expect to be blown away by the new setlist and the new show. So, if you need and insider in the first date of the European Tour, you can count on me  :metal

Plus, I've just acquired my ticket for free, so I'm über-excited  :D

There's no confirmation that it'll be the first show of the tour. But looking forward to your report afterwards!

They´ll start the tour in Portugal, right? But whatever, the beginning of the tour always has some surprise changes in the set. I will be there as well, just got tix to Madrid, Barcelona and Pamplona.

Nest777, you live in Spain, right? What´s there to see in Pamplona? Madrid and Barcelona are obvious tourist cities - there´s tons of stuff to see and do, and I´m VERY excited of going there - but I´m clueless about Pamplona. Any hints?

Now that I think of it, this will be the 10th anniversary of the first show of the TOT tour in Manchester, that is the first and last time Train Of Thought was played from start to finish on stage and the last time Learning To Live was played with the extended JR improvisation before the keyboard solo!

EDIT: it might be 8:20 over there not 7:20 oops  so i guess the doors are already open and the show starts in a little over an hour?

Some spoilers ahead if you weren't following last night's setlist updates.

I don't expect a drastically different show, but maybe some different SFAM/Awake songs. If they were switching out the 2 "sides" of Awake, I'd expect them to leave out 6:00 and CIAW ( :-X) since they were played last tour and play Innocence Faded, A Mind Beside Itself, and Space Dye Vest, which i expect to be played at almost every show on this tour due to it's significance. As for SFAM, I think the first encore song(s) will vary but they'll probably always end on the song they played last night. They could (and should) switch out TSF and rotate it with TGP and TDS, swap OtBoA with some other ADToE songs, and find a way to put StR into the damn set.

That's okay.  Since the set list shouldn't change, there's less curiosity about it during the show.  But hopefully, we get a lot of posts afterward about how it was.

Yeah, I think bosk is right. It is one of the new, never-before-played songs, so I doubt they would rotate it out for a song that has been played pretty consistently since its initial debut (even if it hasn't appeared in a few years).

EDIT: Oh, I guess it hasn't been played since 2004. That is quite a long time, but I think The Shattered Fortress will take precedence this tour.

No, I know.  But Wey said there would be no rotating, and he is in a position to know, so unless he is deliberately trying to mislead us until a few set lists are out, I would say that is a sure bet.

Besides, it is in the same spot in the set list as TSF would be, and since TSF borrows a lot of TGP, I could definitely see someone getting it wrong.

It seems to be a regular seven-string so I guess it was, oddly enough,  just not ready yesterday.

I guess Scarred is too much for James to pull off every night. They might swap in another song?

I've been told that there were some venues with strictier time costraints than others (still hoping the one I'll attend is not among them). Axing a song is the only way to fit in the show, but I was hoping for The Shattered Fortress. Personally, Scarred is an absolute career highlight for the band!

Yeah definitely. Finally Free is also NOT easy to sing and if he has to sing Illumination Theory after that, man.. i don't want to know how long he is able to hold up considering this brutal slaughtering tour schedule (4 shows in 4 days, 1 day rest and then again 4 shows in 4 days..) i'm watching Illumination Theory live right now and as much as i love James as a singer, it is really painful to watch (i immediately knew that it would cause problems live the moment i heard the studio version).

I'm sure James will improve as the tour is moving along. Poor James..he does not deserve this.

I'm thinking technical hitch, like their monitors went out or something. Very easy to get lost in TDOE if that's the case. Seen that happen at a DT show before.

The stage was finished too late, and that made the show start at 9:15 p.m. The band was told that they would have to trim down the setlist because they only had time until 11:30. Police forced the show to end when arrived the hour, and that's all what happened. Can't believe it.

Wait...MM got lost...in one of the songs that he auditioned with to get into the band.

Whoa...

They must have all been distracted with the technical difficulties and the looming curfew near the end of the show.

Such a shame to hear about all that. Well, even though one song got cut and IT was cut short, it looks like the set list is the same, just with the SFAM-encore swapped out with IT.

I wonder if they knew about the shortened show before or after swapping the SFAM set with IT?? If so, why would they want to risk having be cut off on their latest album's epic? I mean, I get wanting to celebrate SFAM's anniversary, but they've played those songs before. Ah well...

They really heavily on monitoring, as I said before, I'm thinking their monitor desk failed or was playing up. It would explain Mangini getting lost during TDOE, if that was the case.

Cyberdrummer, I've been told there were eight police vans outside the venue just in case they had problems while evicting the place.
Title: Re: 2014-01-16 - Palacio Vistalegre - Madrid, ESP
Post by: genome on January 16, 2014, 04:41:27 PM
Also, that might explain a lack of projections - the songs will have to be cued up via a click in Mangini's ears to keep the video in time. Looking at the videos from last night, I can hear quite a bit of backing vocals in the backing track which means most of the songs will be being played to a click, and if that fails in the middle of a song, it's chaos.

(Trust me, I've been there)

Hey guys, just came home from the concert.

No police, no riots.

But the show started 1:30 hours late because they have had serious technical problems. They have not played Ilumnation Theory.

Basically instead of "An Evening With" we have a regular concert with intermission. I think we have probably seen the worst concert that will be on the tour. Shit happens.

The guys have played great but there have been a copule of very notorious mistakes, one in Dance of Eternity and the worst in the Overture 1928. I think the guys were a little bit worried about the technical issues. James was also abit tight with his voice.

I have enjoyed the concert, because these guys always deliver and the songs they have played have been great. But having loose 30 minutes of concert has been dissapointing.

Hope they remember this when they came back to Madrid.

An equipment truck broke down on the way to the venue and didn't arrive until late in the day.

Because of the hard curfew, Scarred and Illumination Theory were not played.

The police didn't stop the show.

...and that's the bottom line.

Just arrived at the hotel as well...there was no Illumination Theory, the show ended with Finally Free. The screen showed only what the cameras captured - that is, no recorded videos or animations. And I believe there was also an issue with the FAS intro tape - it stopped twice! You coukd tell how worried the guys were. But I don't know anything about issues with the police!

Did they go ahead with the show without said equipment then? Because if it ended up arriving anyway then the technical issues must be a separate thing. Maybe it was just one of those nights.

They have played without all the montage of the tour. It was basically the five of them playing with the big screen only showing live images of them.

Very naked show, but it was great. Only thing really really missing are IT.

But probably the guys were pissed. I have seen a lot of DT concerts and never seem them making so many and notorious mistakes while playing.

Another thing interesting of the concert is that JP was for the first time playing his new MM Majesty model. The 7 strings was black and the 6 string one was in mystic blue. He have played the whole concert with these two guitars, except Breaking All Illusions that he played with the same guitar as Luna Park.

They should cut OBOA instead of two awesome pieces of art such as IT and Scarred. And the technical issues... Only cameras on the screen. Not bad, just a little disappointing. But i prefer cameras, because i'm 15 and it was difficult to me seeing them (i'm not very tall...).

Hi everyone.

Just came back from the show. I don't know if a truck broke down, but this morning both trucks arrived at 2 pm. At the same time. Then, the Meet & Greet took place at 7 pm. but by that time, the doors should have been opened for general access. We've accessed the venue hall with a delay of 1 hour, and we've been waiting to enter de venue another 30 minutes. It seems that it's been some technical issues with the video, as we haven't seen the intro animation, nor the one before The Mirror. The screen have just showed live images of the band. Also, Mangini seemed to have some issues with his in-ear monitor, and the icing on the cake: the show ended 45 earlier than expected.

If you think that the police has nothing to do with this, you don't even know how this region, Madrid, works. When I was picking my ticket, two officers were talking to the responsible of the venue. "The show must end at 11:30 pm", they were saying. During the evening, many police cars have arrived to the venue, I've counted 7 or 8 in total. No, they weren't there to secure the access to the venue, nor the exit, they were there to guarantee the closing of the venue at the time decided by the local government.

Well, I know, you may not believe me. Me and some friends have waited for the band at the end of the show, but they haven't come out in 3 hours. But hey, one very important person has indeed come out: Frank Solomon. We've had a little chat with him on this matter and he's been very clear: the video/technical issues have been a problem of the local staff, and the police did order to close the venue at exactly that point. So the band had no choice but to eliminate IT and Scarred from the setlist. Frank has been extremely kind and he has promissed that they'll do something to make it up for us. Also, we've asked him about the band members; it seems they were really pissed off.

Yup, the show itself was great! But this things kind of sour the experience, you know? At the end of the show Mangini was totally blushed because of this events and thanking everyone, and the other members were visibly affected by this "unexpected" ending.

Yeah, I spoke to JP after the show, they were all disappointed that the show went down like it did. They really want the fans to have a great time and enjoy the entire presentation, which due to the video problems they weren't able to, not to mention having to cut out Scarred and IT.

I know this may sound a little shelfish, and I know they were for sure very tired, but it'd have been recomforting to see them after the show. There were just a few fans (not more than 10) waiting in the cold night, and they didn't showed up to say hi or something. The Scarred/IT thing has been terrible, but that little action would have cheered all of us a little  :-[ Just letting you know this because I think they should know how we fans feel about this issues. Other than that, a breathtaking show; best DT show I've seen in my life.

If you think that the police has nothing to do with this, you don't even know how this region, Madrid, works.

I have been living here for 30 years, I think I know how it works.

Police has nothing to do with it. When you book a venue for an event like a concert like this, you make a contract in which you agree on a lot of things, one of them the hour of closing. If the band starts the show 1:30 late and then has to shorten their show to finish on time you can´t blame the local authorities for it. They are doing their job.

I know this may sound a little shelfish, and I know they were for sure very tired, but it'd have been recomforting to see them after the show. There were just a few fans (not more than 10) waiting in the cold night, and they didn't showed up to say hi or something.
I know you mean no harm, but no. Consider this - you come home from one of the worse days you've ever had at work or school. Are you gonna want to talk to a bunch of complete strangers over all the problems you had that day? No. You'll want to keep to yourself and perhaps analyze what went wrong so that the same thing doesn't ever happen again.

Cool!!! Illumination is THE song to be heard on this tour.

If so....after just now watching IT from the first show...  I'm not going to be a happy camper.  We had no clue what they would do for the orch. section prior to the start of the tour.  What I saw from the first show?  4 mins of vid and no actual band performance???  No....  this will be a major disappointment for me if it's presented in this state when I see them.

I quite like what they've done there. They could not have pulled it off as well if performed live by the keys, so they used a tape. And instead of just having the band standing around for 4 minutes, they dimmed the lights, and made it a cinematic video moment fitting for such a cinematic sounding score.
That orchestral recording is just so beautiful, that I don't think doing it synth would have had the same impact, and I'd enjoy seeing my favourite part of the song enhanced by video, and creating a unique live moment.

Hello guys! I was in Madrid last night and it was a shame. I paid 44€ (like $60) for an Evening with show, what is a lot considering that in Spain the medium salary is about 700-800€ (like $.1000) and just the rent of a flat costs 600€. But well, I was really happy to pay for it because it was gonna be so epic! I wasn't attending (because I had no money), but when I saw the setlist they played in Oporto, I bought my ticket and went to Madrid (I live like 420 km away from there). I waited for 8 hours at the gates, freezing. But I was happy when we entered the pit, because I was going to enjoy a ~3 hours show from my favourite band... and with Illumination Theory! You can imagine my face at the end of the night... haha.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the show like a child. The setlist was awesome, but the issues ruined the experience.

- The trucks arrived at the arena at 2 pm. That is QUITE late.
- Some employees were talking about the hour the show should end: 23:30.
- They should have opened the doors at 19:00, but they didn't until 20:00. An employee came and told us: we're opening the door so you don't freeze here outside, but you'll have to wait a little more inside. Yes, we came in, but we had to wait (without entering the pit) like 45 minutes more. In the meanwhile, they were doing the soundcheck (¡at half past eight!)
- At 20:45 aprox., they let us in... only through one door. I was one of the first to enter, but the show started at 21:15 (or so), so when the last fans entered they were already playing. Incredible.
- They sold sitting tickets and standing tickets, but lately they decided not to open the sitting zone. People who bought a sitting ticket (not me) had to stand in the pit with no compensation.
- With False Awakening Suite there were horrible problems. No projections, but that was not the worst. The track stopped, then resumed, then stopped, then resumed and then stopped again and restarted from the beggining. Incredibe.
- The curtain didn't fall as the song ended, we had to wait some seconds. That killed all the magic.
- From my place, the sound was pretty good. Enjoyed a lot.
- LaBrie admited some technical problems with sound and video. The band was vissibly pissed off. No projections, just live cameras of the band itself.
- They were OK, but not great. Some mistakes were made - especially the one in The Dance of Eternity. Mangini got lost and took Petrucci with him, for like 30 seconds. It was pretty annoying.
- LaBrie was OK, but he made some mistakes, too. It was a difficult night for him, no doubt.
- They seemed to have some problems with their in-ear monitors.
- The lack of Scarred and Illumination Theory was devastating. People paid a very expensive ticket to see a 3 hour concert and instead they got a 2h 15m one. Even with that, everyone supported the band, as we understood that it wasn't their fault.
- There was a ridiculous amount of police vans and officers there. At least 8-9 vans at the door, and police INSIDE the enclosure (not the pit, but the gates zone) to make sure people leaved at 23:30.
- The band was really pissed off. Rudess' face was a poem. Mangini was blushed and saying he was sorry. LaBrie could be the one more irritated.

So, it was a bad night for everyone. I hope that they play Illumination Theory the next time they come to Madrid, at least :P

I definitely feel bad for the band - sucks when this sort of thing happens and it's completely out of their control. But props for them doing the show - would've been easy enough for them to say "screw it" and cancel the gig.

It reminds me of the first American show on Inner Tourbulence, in Phoenix. The band had played in Mexico 2 days before, but their equipment got held up in customs. IIRC, they didn't even get to do load-in until 4pm and apparently were very close to canceling the show, which would've sucked since I had driven 5.5 hours to see the show. The show itself was plagued with problems - I remember there being feedback at least a couple times and JL even having to say something into the microphone about it since the soundguy apparently hadn't realized it was there, and I'm pretty sure that there were some flubs as well. On top of that, they skipped the second set completely (performing the title track to SDoIT) and just did an encore.

So I sympathize with those who attended this show and got short changed, but just like me in Phoenix, at least they got to see the show!  :)

Well I feel bad for anyone stuck outside, a late start, and scratched songs. That definitely sucks.

On the bright side, you do get the unique experience of seeing the technical flubs and the apparent near train wrecks. That's something most people don't get and those things actually give me a greater appreciation of the band.

While I missed the "troubled" show in Phoenix, I did get to see the next time they came back to Phoenix.  At that show, they apologized again for what happened the first time, and played the entire SDOIT just for us (or at least I think Phoenix was the only one to get the whole SDOIT that tour).  They also did ACOS as an encore that show if I remember correctly, so at least there's a chance that when they come back to Madrid, they may "make it up" somehow with something special.

Edit:  Looking back at the setlists, maybe I am mistaken with the way they made it up (I guess I'm confusing the ACOS encore with a different Phoenix show; doesn't surprise me in my advanced aging process), but I do remember them mentioning about the mess up from the previous time and doing something special for Phoenix that next time around.

Hmm.. Well at the very least, it's quite an amazing setlist. The other side of the coin is it'd be disappointing for some people not to get to experience it and loose out on a favourite song that they were hoping for (which used to happen all the time). Consistency can be good, although the mystery setlists were obviously more fun for us. :P

Incidentally, I just realized that 10 years ago on the date of this show, DT had another terrible gig - the first gig of the entire Train of Thought tour, in Manchester, England. It was so bad that MP requested that bootlegs of the show not be circulated!

Maybe it's best for DT to avoid shows on January 16th every 10 years?

I quite like what they've done there. They could not have pulled it off as well if performed live by the keys, so they used a tape. And instead of just having the band standing around for 4 minutes, they dimmed the lights, and made it a cinematic video moment fitting for such a cinematic sounding score.
That orchestral recording is just so beautiful, that I don't think doing it synth would have had the same impact, and I'd enjoy seeing my favourite part of the song enhanced by video, and creating a unique live moment.

I so hope you're right Blob.  Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

It was a warmup gig, the first of the tour. The band was pretty rusty, but the awfulness of that show is rather overestimated, IMO.

agreed. I was there too with my ex-wife who was dreading the gig because it wasnt really her type of music but she really enjoyed it. If I remember rightly they played the whole of Train of Thought in one block as per the CD??!!

Interesting...I don't really talk with any of my exes let alone go to concerts with them

lol, I think you are misunderstanding that! She was my wife at the time but it my ex-wife now!!

Space Dye Vest - Much better the second night -  I still don't like JLB's octave incrementation at the end.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNMN5NFzePI

I'm with you on that. The way it was originally sung was to me the best part of the song.
