Title: Hollow Years appreciation thread
Post by: cyberdrummer on June 03, 2013, 11:45:33 AM
We all know that the Budokan version is the best  ;)

I also think this is one of the songs on FII that benefited from being edited, resulting in the album version being better than the demo. A great tune.

Agreed on all counts!

The Budokan version is what got me into the song, but the studio version is great too. The extra section in the demo is nice (got to hear it live too), but the album version is tighter, and works better.
I'm a big fan of DT's ballads, and of FII, so this song ranks highly for me. :tup

Appreciated!

This was the second song I liked by DT (after Pull Me Under), long before I became a bigger fan :tup

JP's solo on the Budokan version gets all the attention, but I love that version for Jordan's keys over the outro just as much. Very tasty.

Actually, we don't.

I like the album version the most.

No need to put a flameshield on for speaking the truth.  The studio version is so much better, it ain't even funny.

The Budokan version is near perfect, but I just wish they didn't play WIMH that night, as the version with the tight chord ending is really much more effective  :tup

Along with The Killing Hand at the Marquee, the Budokan version of Hollow Years is probably the song with the biggest difference in my enjoyment levels of a song between the live and studio versions.

Phrased that sentence terribly but I think you get my point ;D

Both versions are great so it doesn't really matter which one is better. :p

That's the version that really got me into the song, but as time has gone by, I have really grown to like to album version as well.

Is it ok if I like both the album and Budokan versions? Both have their place for me and I think the Budokan version is fantastic. It's also immortalized in greatness due to the fact I was there to see it in person since I was living in Japan.

I'll always hold a special place in my heart for this song because the L@B version was my first ever taste of DT.
