Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are one of the bands that survived my transition from listening to everything my dad listens to over to the more metal stuff; one of the few bands that did that, actually. They span pretty much every genre from garage rock to mellow and minimalistic indie rock, while remaining firmly rooted in the rock corner throughout. Their selling point are probably the vocals, though not everyone digs Cave's voice, but it has a very unique touch to it, and he sings with a lot of emotion and has some great lyrics throughout.
My favourite albums are probably Murder Ballads, No More Shall We Part, The Good Son, Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! and Push the Sky Away. Either Murder Ballads or Push the Sky Away is would be my recommended introductory albums.
Speaking of that, their newest (PTSA) is completely amazing. A return to a more mellow and minimalistic style, but executed perfectly. The title track is one of the most beautiful songs that the band has ever recorded.
Any other fans out there? I know that Zander's one, but that's pretty much it.

I've mostly just heard a few songs from The Boatman's Call (Into My Arms is so beautiful) and the song Where The Wild Roses Grow when it was on MTV.

Murder Ballads, Tender Prey, and Let Love In are his best to me. Murder Ballads being my favourite. He really lets his storytelling skills shine there.

So, Skeleton Tree is out, and it's an AOTY contender for me, as well as my favourite Nick Cave album at the moment, probably. Seriously, anybody who likes Nick Cave and/or great lyrics must give this album a listen.

AOTY contender and could very well be my favorite album he has done. I Need You might be the best song this year, and the title track is not far behind.

I'm especially partial to Distant Sky, I just love how the two voices work together and contrast each other. :heart But really, the whole album is just amazing.

I listened to it once but I wasn't really paying attention, will spin it again today (maybe). One song that I liked on first listen is Girl in Amber.
I'm not really a fan but I like The Boatman's Call and Murder Ballads. They are definitely on my list to check them throughly.

Damn what a timely thread, I just listened to Distant Sky today, and thought it was amazing.
Then I listened to it about ten more times.

Easily one of the most consistent artists of all time. Skeleton Tree is also great.

My favorite till now is Boatman's Call. Not one single bad song in there.

Meh. It's a good album, but far from my favourite. I've never really liked Black Hair, and the overall sound of the album is very samey throughout, meaning that I'd probably rate each single song (Black Hair aside) higher than I rate the album as a whole.

New Nick Cave album ('Ghosteen') released today. The last album, Skeleton Tree, is so far my album of the decade and this new one is a very worthy companion piece (apparently it completes a trilogy that began with Push The Sky Away). The album, which is musically ambient, deals with grief and loss and there are moments where he seems to be directly addressing the tragic death of his son. It's a very emotionally draining album. They've added the whole thing to Youtube and I strongly recommend checking it out.

loved it for first 20 minutes. then i was kinda meh like it wasn't going anywhere and started to feel very repetitive... think i can give it another chance when in "worse" mood or weather ;)

So.... with 8 hours available for listening to music each day (smart working), I'm quickly running out of stuff to listen to (unless I hear the same albums over and over and over), and I figured that Nick Cave was worth exploring.
Problem is... I don't really know that much about this band :biggrin: the songs I know are:
- Loverman (because of Metallica)
- Where the Wild Roses Grow (because it's famous)
- Red Right Hand (because of Peaky Blinders)
And that's basically it. The other day I went on YouTube, and top video suggestions were Henry Lee, the duet which I liked quite a lot, and Do you Love Me, which at first listening didn't really grab me.
So checking on Wikipedia I see that we're into Murder Ballads / Let Love In, are they good places to start? I'm a classic metalhead, I don't like much very bluesy stuff but I guess I'd be more down for dark, brooding and theatrical stuff.... what's a good starting point for someone mainly used to classic heavy metal and hard rock?

Personally, there's no shame in checking out a greatest hits to get a sense of an overall discography. The "best of" that was released in 1997 is a really good collection to get your feet wet. After that, I'd recommend:
Murder Ballads
The Good Son
Live Seeds (for a killer performance of "Papa Won't Leave You, Henry")
His later albums start to quiet down a bit, but there's still lots of good stuff there:
The Boatman's Call (for "People Ain't No Good" and "Into My Arms")
No More Shall We Part (for "The Sorrowful Wife" and "As I Sat Sadly By Her Side")
Nocturama (for the ridiculous 14-minute "Babe I'm on Fire")
And then settle in for (in my opinion) his absolute best work, the double album Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus from 2004.
