Title: obscure song roulette / Round # 7 results up / Aweosmenessess!
Post by: obscure on March 19, 2013, 02:59:35 AM
Hey guys,

Rich has given me the green light.. so here we go...

Not many rules :p
1. 7 rounds
2. Score scale. 1-10
3. I prefer mp3 to have the songs on the go. Spotify is the second best. You're good to go with Grooveshark and YouTube, too. (If there's a video, or a good live version of the song, I'd love you to give me a heads up)
4. No whining, no bitching, no nagging..
5. Timing is crucial...
6. If we spam the thread up, I will bold the relevant posts. (see rule #4)
7. Themes are listed below
8. Some songs are growers rather than instantly accessible. I might re-asses such songs if they grow on me during the course of the roulette. Scores can only get higher because of reassessment.
9. No pressure on me of any kind, it tends to backfire
10. Reviews will be short write ups, but you will get the point (see rule #4)
11. No PMs, only e-mails, even though it's a YT or whatever link.
subject line should include:
In the case of song submission:
Roulette - Round # - participant name - Artist name - Song name
example:
Roulette - Round 1 - lonestar- Dream Theater - Misunderstood
in the case of a a question
Roulette - Round # - participant name - question - a keyword
example:
Roulette - Round 1 - lonestar- question - I'm one whinny hippie bitch
12- After the submission, post here letting me know that you are in (no I have no problem with dirty jokes, have a go)
13- I appreciate short introductory write-ups about your submissions, and why you chose that particular piece
14- I am a busy woman, if I screw up something, like a song / a player name or whatever it may be, be kind as to send me an e-mail rather than bashing me publicly  (also see rule #4)
15- Abide by the rules

Players:
Scorpion
elite
lonestar
Lolzeez
jingle
Ruba
kirknosehair --> Ytse  (Barry can join later on, if he likes)
Onno

If you changed your mind, let me know and fill the empty spot up quickly

Round #4: Oriental metal
Round #5: Band round (you will be able to send 1 to 5 songs)
Round #6: TBA
Round #7: TBA

Note: What I have in mind is not important, feel free to interpret the themes as you please.

Now, let's have fun! :obscure:

No banned list.... My last FM should give you an idea about what I am familiar with though... if you get the impression that I am missing out on / overlooking some songs even by those bands listed on my Last FM, do send them to me... I'll let you know if it's a no go...  :)

well, song length is one of the criterion I will use to assess your judgement. If it's a 20 minute song that can justify its length, what more can I ask for?. I have time to listen to songs  :)

Judging by the first few submissions, I don't think you will find anything to you liking king.. they are highly tailored for the obscure taste  :lol
Title: Re: obscure song roulette / Round #1
Post by: King Postwhore on March 20, 2013, 11:58:56 AM
I still like checking them out.  Only Rap and old school country music throws me off.  Well growls throughout a whole song as well.  I like it when it's done like Opeth.
Title: Re: obscure song roulette / Round #1
Post by: obscure on March 20, 2013, 12:43:53 PM
hahaha I wouldn't suggest anyone to submit a Rap or a country music myself  :lol

well I shouldn't comment on the rest as we are in the middle of a round :)
although, the fact that I appreciate the growls more than most of the people I know on the forums, is not a secret .. so, that was what I was referring too :)
haha I think I couldn't make a point, trying to be too subtle... :p or maybe not....

Almost 24 hours without a post.  Very uncharacteristic, so I will break the silence.

12- After the submission, post here letting me know that you are in (no I have no problem with dirty jokes, have a go)

I am no longer delinquent.  Now for part two of Rule 12.

Sperm #1:  Man I'm tired.  How much longer until the ovaries?
Sperm #2:  Ovaries??  Dude, you're on the wrong mission.
Sperm #1:  What do you mean?
Sperm #2:  We JUST passed the tonsils.

Ovary #1:  Did you order some furniture?
Ovary #2:  No, why?
Ovary #1:  There are two nuts downstairs trying to shove an organ through the door.

Two Newfies, Larry and Doug, are sitting at their favourite bar drinking beer.

Larry turns to Doug and says, 'You know, I'm tired of going through life without an education. Tomorrow I think I'll go to the Community College and sign up for some classes.'

Doug thinks it's a good idea and the two leave.

The next day, Larry goes down to the college and meets Dean of Admissions, who signs him up for the four basic classes: Math, English, History, and Logic.

'Logic?' Larry says. 'What's that?'

The dean says, 'I'll give you an example. Do you own a weed eater?'

'Yeah.'

'Then logically speaking, because you own a weed eater, I think that you would have a yard.'

'That's true, I do have a yard.'

'I'm not done,' the dean says. 'Because you have a yard, I think logically that you would have a house.'

'Yes, I do have a house.'

'And because you have a house, I think that you might logically have a family.'

'Yes, I have a family.

'I'm not done yet. Because you have a family, then logically you must have a wife. And because you have a wife, then logic tells me you must be a heterosexual.'

'I am a heterosexual. That's amazing, you were able to find out all of that because I have a weed eater.'

Excited to take the class now, Larry shakes the Dean's hand and leaves to go meet Doug at the bar. He tells Doug about his classes, how he is signed up for Math, English, History, and Logic.

'Logic? ' Doug says, 'What's that?'

Larry says, 'I'll give you an example. Do you have a weed eater?'

'No.'

'Then you're queer.'

I'm just waiting for a :jingleboy:.  Not ever going to ask for it though, because when you ask, you fall prey to the "careful what you ask for" motif.  Had a buddy ask for a nickname once.  We decided to call him "Lumpy".  Mason asked to know who would play him in DTF: The Movie.  I pointed out Peter Griffin bore a striking resemblance.   :lol

TEH RESULTS
^ this will do the job Nek, I won't bold the whole post  ;)

Hey... I want some cheering... "wow that was fast... you're the efficiency queen, lady".. blah blah blah...

Now... I received three bands that I am very familiar with… I accepted the submissions though, as they weren’t in my Last FM… yeah.. my last FM is only synced with Spoify.. :/ and I have been using it for less than a year… I guess..
No problem.. I haven’t got the time to send the songs back and forth, so here we are.. If they are not there, good luck with finding and sending me some of my fave bands… like someone did this round  :lol

Scorpion - Gamma Ray - Rebellion in Dreamland 6
Kai Hansen!!!! What a talented dude!!! Rebellion in Dreamland is a very competent song with the solo, vocals and everything.. always enjoyed Gamma Ray … but not enough to want to go deeper into their catalogue..Plus  I am more picky with Power metal than I used to be.. anthem-like songs are not doing much for me anymore…  Sending me old-school power metal (or old-school stuff in any sub-genre)  is not a good idea really.. I am sucker for modern tunes… If you've got something like Kamelot, Evergrey, Avatantasia .. shoot..
But again… solid song..
I had a ticket for their gig (with Helloween headlining  the show)  last week which was canceled the last minute due to the health problems of Andi Deris. I’d expect Hansen to step up, do the job and save the night as he sang for the band for five years… two gigs at a night for a vocalist? So what ? :P
So you get -1 for my ruined night… :P
+1 because I love you  :heart

Lonestar - Bossk- Pick Up Artist - 7.3    :omg:  :lol

+1 bonus for the band name… honestly when lonestar sent me a song by a band named Bossk, as you might expect I first laughed so hard,
then I thought "this  can’t be that good.. he sent me the song for the obvious reason"… for shits and giggles...
but dang.. this band rocked as hard as the big boss himself…

ahem.... so yeah... the first part of the song didn't do much... I said meh ..just another death/doom band with some harsh & abrasive vocals and stuff... at around the 5 minute mark the song took a what the fuck effect... that surprise added tons to the song and left me saying.. oh, let me hear that again.. yes! I like it... that second half is thoroughly engaging … great band with a fantastic name! I'm sold :)
the deep growls at the second half are just so charming... reminded me of some Saturnus, Swallow the Sun, Ihsan stuff... good shot chef... you nailed it!

Onno - Lamb of God – Reclamation 5,7
Yess.. This is where Last FM gets a bit misleading…LoG are one of the most competent ones out there…
Something' missing in their formula though….
Gojira – LoG =missing element… Find it and you’re the king!

Ruba - Saosin – Collapse - 7
soaring vocals.. tasteful riffs… nice drum fills here and there.... good stuff.. I like...

Elite - Moonloop – Strombus - 7,1
melodic death metal meets djent & prog..yesss... nice mix of brutal and clean vocals.. also yessss
quality solo.. tasteful bass..
Album purchased ;)

Ytse - Brad Paisley Time Warp - 5
teh link (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHlmYlwUKHU)

Technically competent.. top notch musicianship.. I loved everything but Brad Pailey himself..  :lol true story :P
The drum solo, key leads,  the strings.. everything else was perfect.. no.. no I don't like the strings either, take that duo out of this equation and we’re good .. yeah it’s really good when the country vibe didn’t really present itself..  I loved the jazzy sections.. the bass & the drum solo back to back towards the end are yumm… The only thing that is to my liking by Pailey is the the bluesy solo at the 2.20 minute mark
I gave you +1 for your guts then took it back for your attempt to torture me…

JingleBoy-Shania Twain-From This Moment - 3
Ok..the vocal harmonies and the piano chords are all very good… it gets thicker towards to end… nice textures and all… but all these don't change the fact that listening to a song like this makes me feel like I am watching a Disney movie…  :lol
If you're getting a second vocalist on board... go for some contrast.. add some counterpoints.. add some gritty vocals, some growls.. that's the way to go about it... man.. why don't the musicians get it?! it's easy :p

Lolzeez - Riverside - Living In The Past - 8.5

I have their entire catalog  :lol. When I saw the submission I ran to my Last FM.. obviously I haven’t done any R listening on Spotify… So I accepted the submission… It’s obviously a masterpiece…

I guess I’ll see you in May at the gig then zeez ;)

Lolzeez  8,5
lonestar 7,3
Elite  7,1
Ruba  7
Scorpion  6
Onno  5,7
Ytse  5
Jingle 3

Next round: Bass
Deadline: 26 March Tuesday

I've got the biggest...  balls of them all!  I was aiming for that soft spot in the lady's heart.  Clearly I missed.  Or it doesn't exist.   :lol :lol  I knew it was going to be in the running for last place - recalling the songs she gave me as a power ballad, soft spots are hard to come by in her musical inventory.

Now that I'm apparently sent, it's dirty joke time.

As Cinderella is getting ready for Prince Charming's ball, Fairy godmother looks at Cinderella and says, "You have the dress, the shoes, the carriage....why do you still look upset child?"
Cinderella says, "It's that time of the month."
Fair godmother looks around.....spotting a large pumpkin, she wags her wand, and turns it into a tampon. Cinderella takes it into the bathroom and a few minutes later she's ready to leave.
Fairy godmother says, "Now remember, be back by midnight or the spell will be broken, and the tampon will turn back into a pumpkin."
Off Cinderella goes....Midnight, no Cinderella. 1am, 2am no Cinderella. Fairy godmother is very worried. Finally at 3am Cinderella comes rolling in.
"Where have you been? I was worried sick!  Did you meet the Prince?"
"Forget the Prince, I met the most amazing man.  Peter, Peter something"

Ok... well let's combine some themes that other roulette owners have used.

How about a happy instrumental song between 4-5 minutes from a band with with a black member that's a guilty pleasure and on the most recent release by that band?

Since I'm pretty sure I already know where things stand with my submission, I can't "backfire" with any additional pressure.  So, in order to speed things along, it's BAD joke time.  Three bad jokes will be delivered every hour until resultz are posted.

Did you hear the one about the three holes in the ground filled with water?
No?
Well, well, well....

Helen Keller walks into a bar...
then a chair, then the wall.

Two bananas are lying on a riverbank when a turd goes floating by.
The turd yells to the bananas, "hey guys, come on in, the water feels great!"
One banana looks at the other banana and says, "do you believe that shit?"

You have one more hour...

The 11:30am ET punishment was staved off due to unforeseen complications (like... actually having to do some work!).

What did one ocean say to the other ocean?
Nothing, they just waved.

Who is bigger: Mr. Bigger or Mr. Bigger's baby?
The baby, because she's a little bigger.

What's E.T. short for?
Because he's only got little legs!

What do you call a fake noodle?
An impasta!

I bought a ceiling fan the other day.
Complete waste of money. He just stands there applauding and saying "Ooh, I love how smooth it is."

I shall skip the 2:30pm ET warning (due to foreseen complications).

RESULTS

I treasure your effort to introduce me to new bands :P

Jingle - Turn Me Loose/Loverboy 3

I could love this song some years ago… not now.. don’t know what to say apart from the fact that he repeats those lines “Turn Me Loose” way too much is quite annoying… .. If I had to hear this song 3 times in a row I could commit suicide hahahah  :lol .. seriously though it’s too repetitive.. there’s an ok solo towards the end… but again.. he keeps singing that same line over it.. bass wasn’t that interesting.. it was just a bit on the front.. that’s about it...

Onno &  Elite  - Tool – Schism 8

Tool and I have a funny story… very briefly, I avoided them for years since my sister is a huge fan..  :lol she is a  mainstream type of girl.. yeah you get the point… There were some songs that I've enjoyed for years though.. like Sober.. or Forty Six & 2 .. but still, I never bothered to check them out properly .. until I fell in love with A Perfect Circle last year and wanted to see more of Maynard.. a lot of procrastination later, I asked loney’s help.. and he was kind enough to give me a hand… suggested me some (insane) songs…. and I have been doing a massive listening lately…  this song is one of those that stood out in their catalog …  The only reason why they are not on my Last FM is because they are not on Spotify…  ;)

The fact that two players posted the song same song kinda reinforces my score… some very creative bass riffs in there  :tup

Scorpion – Iron Maiden – When the Wild Wind Blows 3

Really??? What are you gonna submit next? Dream Theater?  :lol :P
Of course, there are very good bands you don’t see on my list and think you have it – but it is a double edged sword as the reason I don’t have Iron Maiden on my list is I don’t like Iron Maiden at all. I know they are a great band, I do respect them – their sound, it just doesn’t work for me.

Lonestar- Fishbone- Sunless Saturday- 4

Acoustic intro scared me… I said.. oh here we go.. a hippie sound will emerge… then it pretended to get better.. but it didn't… instrumentation is ok.. actually very good.. but vocals.. both the lead and the harmonies killed it for me… bass element was there, but couldn’t save the song..…  not my kind of vibe…

Ruba – Butthole Surfers – Who Was In My Room Last Night? 4

Umm no…

Lolzeez - Jaco Pastorius - Come On Come Over 5

I was of course expecting some jazz this round… I am very picky on that department.. The intro was promising… but this jazz meets Santana type of vibe doesn't do it for me.. :/
Groovy funky… no  :dunno:
I tend to appreciate depressing music a lot more…

Ytse -  Jazz Pistols - 3 on the floor 8

This is the kind of bass that pulls me to jazz…. It drags a bit here and there though… the jam shit is amazing for live settings not so good on YT… Give me a glass of margarita at a bar on the beach and this piece gets a 9… take a chair and join in.. 10/10  :P

Elite     15,1
Onno   13,7
Lolzeez   13,5
Ytse   13
lonestar 11,3
Ruba    11
Scorpion 9
Jingle   6

You have a new deadline already... now start bitchin!!! Go go go go go.....

:iagree:

^This so much.  Too many roulette's just give high scores across the board.  Now, that could be a function that all the songs are really good, but I do recall following a roulette recently, where (10 point scale) a song that was actively disliked was given a 4 or 5 or something like that (no disrespect to whomever that was).  Too often it seems mid-level scores are handed out simply to avoid upsetting someone.

That's why I like the stack ranking method, and your 'binary' system, Doc (0 or 1, in or out, dead or alive).

Anyone participating in a roulette needs to put on their big boy/girl panties, and (to steal a line from RJ) not get all butt-hurt if a song is disliked.

By 'stack ranking' do you mean the system I (among others, if I recall correctly, you did this as well) used? Where the 'worst song' simply gets 1 point, and the 'best' gets 5, with everything else in between (or something along those lines)?

Yes, that is what he meant.  Also called a "must" system.  It helps spread scores out instead of having everyone at the top.

Post by: Elite on March 29, 2013, 07:44:06 AM
I understand, that's why I used it. But then I blew it all by using a wager system at the end, although mine was probably a bit complicated. The wager system, imo, is something that doesn't work either, since, at the end of your roulette, the person that has done best throughout can still lose to the last place who just happens to send a better song, just for once. Or something like that, it just kind of ruins the whole concept at the end and I will refrain from using ANY sort of wager in my next roulette.

Yeah, dumbass   Numbers burned me on that...I had a very big lead going into the last round, and I took a risk because it was all about musical discovery and I thought I had something he would like.  He ended up hating it and I got last place despite winning half the rounds.

Jingle - Meat Loaf - For Cryin Out Loud 4

Chad is obviously not targeting a triumph, nor is he trying to defend his crown… he must have a hidden agenda… damn what is it?
It’s only me who gets to have a hidden vagenda here :P  (+1 to those who catch the reference)
That said… This was actually a touching piece.. I kinda regretted that I hadn’t heard this song in the years that I could actually appreciate it.. I am completely in a different world now…
Do you know that feeling when everybody loves a movie but you can’t get around seeing it.. and when you do, it is too late… you just don’t like it… (e.g. Titanic.. oh screw Titanic.. it’s a bad movie anyways.. let’s say Braveheart)--yeah start bitchin’
That’s pretty much how I feel about this song… you don’t need me to tell you that this is a gracefully arranged and masterfully delivered song…. So much so that it deserves a 9 at least for the thick parts, when the orchestration is there… the other parts drag a bit though… the song fails to justify its length……. also there’s tastes…. It simply doesn’t cater to mine… Re-play value is so low for me..

Onno - Dave Weckl - Like That 7
Dave Weckl.. what a beast of a drummer! .. his phrasing and the way he uses the cymbals are just tasteful.. I don’t listen to him that much anymore.. my ex was big on jazz and he was a huge fan of Dave Weckl's and Chick Corea's .. (RIP :P ) So as you might expect the association is there… hence the absence on Last FM… plus his Afro-Cuban-influence is not for me… but loved this one piece a lot! Good submission!

Ytse - Six Feet Under - Frozen At the Moment of Death 5

I’m familiar with their stuff.. Heard their tracks here and there.. they could never get me excited enough to make me want to check out more though… But I have to admit, this is one of the better songs I heard by them….still not my type of growls … I’m not heaviness for heaviness’ sake kind of girl… so this band keeps failing to rank high on my check out list.

Scorp - Wintersun - Winter Madness 8
Nice blend of power, symphonic and black metal .. complexity & melody are there… guitar sound is fantastic and these guys lay down some nice finger work out on the guitar. Brutal vocals are not on the forefront but more like an organic part of the sound along with the instruments…  Although it’s not my usual preference, it works well with black metal sound … Mastodon is another band that uses a similar  mix as their signature sound… so some bands get that right…

lonestar- Baroness- Rays of Pinion 9.5
Baroness !!! Despite a lot of listens how could I not see their beauty?! This song is melodic as hell… intricate and so very beautiful.... guitar harmonies coupled with steady drum work is just graceful… interestingly enough I loved the guitars to death even though the distortion is not thick enough for my taste … I have to credit the catchy, bouncy riffs for that… vocals, in the form of deep screams, is another sweet layer that works perfectly with all what’s going on…  Production work is so good too! This submission is the closest to what I expected from this round as the drums rumble along from start to finish and compliment everything impeccably! Well done chef!

Ruba - Sepultura - Desperate Cry 6
One of the bands that shaped my taste… seen them quite a few times… that’s all I’d like to say….

Elite - Toxik - Technical Arrogance 9
Man!!! The traffic of this song is sick!!!! The time signatures :o
This song got me so excited that I went and checked out a few more songs by the band… but the other ones I heard have more old-school vibe to them… On this song there’s a cool mechanical undercurrents, heavy distortion, crunchy tone and some synthetic sounds rather than organic.. it’s edgy and dirty, which all worked brilliantly for me! … Helluva submission!
The vocals are a bit low in the mix… also works well maybe because the instrumentation is masterful.. as the tone choice and delivery are perfect!

Lolzeez – haven’t submitted… two options.. I will either assess his submission with the next haul.. or a punishment point of -1 will be applied..

Overall, very good round! Easily the best so far.....  :tup

Love you Deb, but I'm with Nem on this one. You couldn't get me to see titanic even if you superglued my nuts to a cannonball and fired it through the theater doors.

Chad is obviously not targeting a triumph, nor is he trying to defend his crown… he must have a hidden agenda… damn what is it?

I didn't hide it from you... told you right up front my strategy.  I've already one this thing once.  I don't mind letting others have a chance.  If I was truly trying, I sure as shit wouldn't be playing the role of the caboose after 3 rounds.  Oh, and maybe there's a nugget in your comment for an upcoming round.  hmmm, hmmm !?!?!?  RJ knows where it's at!

That said… This was actually a touching piece..

Touching?!?!?!  The only thing this song is touching is a hard cock.  "When you're crying out loud .... you know I love you".  As I pointed out... this is a LUST song.

That's actually a good explanation.  Although, Braveheart kicks all kinds of ass... and twice on Sunday's.  Deb can go get all moist and slippery with Titanic, there's only 3 seconds of that movie that is worthwhile - Kate's boobs (which will bring me to a Kate Winslett joke later).

Re-play value is so low for me..

Ok, time.

Replay value!?  Replay value!!!!  As long as we're being honest with each other .... hardly anything has replay value for you.  I enter into Exhibit A, your last.fm stats (and yes, I know they are not the be-all-and-end-all of anyone's listening preferences/history, but they serve a purpose right now).  27,885 listens, from 1584 bands.  That's an average of 17 listens per artist.  Furthermore, 2/3 of those have 10 listens or less (ie, maybe 1 full album).  Even FURTHER-more, 1/3 have only 1 listen.  550 bands in your last.fm library have no replay value.

:endrant:

Well, at least I'm improving.  Although, having RJ nearly beat my 3 round score with just one song is a tad  :blush.  But, knowing what we've done for each other musically over the last year or so, I can live with it.  Bottom line is that you really don't need any help to discover new prog/metal music.  Between what you get from the LO website and the FB group alone, you have no lack of prog, metal (and the combination of the two) to discover.  I'm trying to expose you to things you would never try yourself.  I don't mind the low scores, I just hope I'm not pissing you off too much.   ;)

This oriental round was really hard, and I'm afraid this too will be outside the box before I can attempt to cater more to your tastes.  Gonna be busy on Sunday, so I'll send Monday (no foolin!).

Seriously... You don't see a flaw in your logic? Do you think I only listen to the list on Last FM? I already told you that I only synced my Spotify account there. If we had Last FM 15 years ago and if I went out of my way to use it for all of my music needs there would have been a completely different picture there... It's just a representative of my most recent taste, as it is - and you know, I sometimes check out a band, don't like them and move on... What should I do? Should I not check them out on Spotify lest they be, god forbid, listed on my Last FM?

RESULTS  ROUND #4  / ORIENTAL METAL

I know a lot of you had to do some research for this round. But man… it’s been very lucrative for me… I thank you all for the effort you invested in…

Onno - Jurojin – Proem 7

Good submission..  :tup made me wanna smoke w..  err anyway.. First of all it fits the theme perfectly… they have an authentic signature, well Tool influence is there, but still.. they seem to have made the sound their own with the successful utilization of the Eastern instruments. This song combines the Eastern vibe and the Western in a well crafted prog rock song. I like it.

Scorpion - Melechesh - Illumination: The Face of Shamash –  9

Holy fucking shit! Brilliant!!.. and new to me.. you nailed it mister!  :metal
This song is full of fantastic riffs!!! All very well structured and mang are they addictive! The atmosphere created with the Middle Eastern rhythms  and sound effects works so damn well.. Thank you for this band… I’m gonna be all over them like a donkey on a waffle.…

Ytse - The Black Mages-One Winged Angel 2

No no.. you can’t trick me into scoring you high by sending me a piece with an orchestra… this roulette is about finding good songs and bands.. put that orchestra behind any street musician, they will sound like this  ;)
seriously, there was nothing special on that composition, neither was there in the delivery… (I mean the band ) some mediocre guitar playing, and not-so-bad keys… that's all..
Plus, there was nothing oriental in that song.. it was some eastern guys playing western music.. (although you didn’t lose any points because of your lousy interpretation  ;D )

if you’re gonna send me some Asian metal, send me something like this: (no Rickrolling this time, promise!)
ballsy metal (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHyFNbVsj4c)

Jingle Mr. Big - Addicted To That Rush 4

I absolutely love Billy Sheehan and Paul Gilbert.. However appreciating the quality of a song and loving it are different things.. this song is not for me…  I’m addicted to Rush.. but not that rush :P
Plus, this song has nothing to do with the theme…

Lolzeez - Rudra-The Pathless Path to the Knowable Unknown - 3

The instrumentation aspect is mediocre at best and vocals are horrendous…  :-\  I know you had to find a song for this round… and I know you had to do it quickly because of your trip...  it’s not your taste either…. Thanks for doing a research though….  :tup

Elite - Gevolt - Tum Balalaika 6

This was a pretty interesting piece.. the instrumental aspect was really good… but the language killed it a bit for me... plus.. too much folk for my taste.

lonestar - Distorted - Flesh and blood – 9.7

:o  :o   :o  That’s oriental metal to its core… it gave me goosebumps… you mtherfcuker… lonestar is of course taking good advantage of knowing my taste too well… he reads me like a book…
I am not even big on female vocals… this lady killed me though… so versatile… the rhythm section is strong… the bass and drums do the job perfectly… the eastern instruments are incorporated masterfully and tastefully… this roulette was kind of worrying me, making me feel like I won’t add anything to my library….  Thankfully that has changed!

Ruba-  Animal Alpha - Breed Again 9.9

:omg: I’m speechless…. I love me some well-done avantgarde …  I’ve got no idea whatsoever why the hell I have never checked out this band….  This chick is crazy.. I love you Agnete Kjølsrud!!!!  :hefdaddy Purchased the album right away… can’t wait to hear the whole thing….. TY TY TY!!!!

lonestar 30,5
Elite     30,1
Onno   27,7
Ruba    26,9
Scorpion 26
Lolzeez   22,5
Ytse   20
Jingle   14

Round #5: Band round (you will be able to send 1 to 5 songs)
The idea is introducing me to a new band... so this round I will not accept the submissions I am familiar with... No Iron Maiden.. no Tool...
If you have doubt with the band you've chosen, send it to me soon so that you can still have time to find another band before the deadline...
Which is 5th April (Friday)

Good luck :obscure:

:omg:. The risk was worth taking!

Yes, they are my favourite band, and Djerv is awesome as hell too. Hopefully you like some other songs from them. Breed Again is actually one of my least favourites of them, but it's still damn-near-perfect. They never did a bad song, however, they made only 23 songs.

However, my peak in this roulette is certainly now passed. 9,9, goddamnit!

I seriously thought asian metal meant....asians playing metal.

Can't get much more "asians playing metal" than the Black Mages. But rather than just show them shredding away, I figured something showing them on par with DreamTheater (full orchestra) ect ect.

While I consider Mr.Big an even WORSE interpretation of this round than mine(might as well have sent Steel Dragon)...........Addicted to That Rush would have got a 9.9 in my roulette in any round.

definition of  Oriental Of or relating to the countries of the Orient or their peoples or cultures; eastern.

not eastern people doing something of west  :)

Conceptually, I agree.  However, I sent the 2009 "Back to Budokan" version.  What's more metal than playing in front of 12000 Japanese in the most famed Japanese concert hall?  I'll concede that musically it didn't fit the theme, but overall it did.

However, it's the lady's roulette, and she makes (and interprets) the rules/definitions.  Judge, jury and executioner.

No, I don't like losing.  And I don't like sending you music you don't like (that goes for any/every roulette I'm in).

For what it's worth, I'm not bitching. I can take low scores, and anyone not liking my submissions (I got my big boy panties on).  If you didn't like Addicted to that Rush, ok... I'll live with that.  But your OP said interpret how we want; I did just that; your review hinted the score was low (or you didn't like it) because it didn't fit the theme.  All I did was quote your OP, which is seemingly contradictory to comments made when reviewing.

I'm not bitching, just pointing out the facts - which I didn't know was akin to not taking my scores well.   :\

But, whatever...

In that case it would be better to just send one awesome song, instead of one awesome one and four mediocre ones.
Ah, well, I'll just go with four, whatever :P

Sending now.

Atta boy.  Only the pansy's will send 1 or 2 songs if it's an 'average' system.  Maybe she takes the best of the bunch... or maybe, just maybe she adds them all up - which in my case will be still likely be a 5 at best (assuming I continue my current trend).

I'll be sending a full complement.  Apparently I have nothing to lose.   :lol

Unbelievable she's never heard of Mr. Mister!

Will the scoring differ if I sent more songs? Or what's the idea of being able to send more than 1 song?

good question... sorry I didn't clarify it before...
well the idea is introducing me to a band.. if you think that you can do it with one song, by all means go with one... but if you think one song can't give me a feel for the overall sound of the band, give me more.. I am not scoring the songs... I am scoring the band...
the biggest criterion is the likelihood of me wanting to come back to the band...

the submissions tell me that most of you got the idea though....

I had about 5 bands I thought she would never know, but all showed up in the last.fm stats..
:lol do tell

Chad... no .. you don't take low scores well....  ;)
Now this is taking it well.. so mature and noble
3>0
I am happy tbh.

I thought I made it clear that I don't want bitching in my roulette..... are we supposed to have fun or what?

I had Arcturus, Darkwater, Oddland, Magic Pie, Touchstone and Persona non Grata in mind, thinking there should have been at least one of those you didn't know. Then I saw all of them in your last.fm :lol

oh ok.. one of the players didn't put 'roulette' in the subject line... so it didn't show up when I sorted my emails.. I've got them all...
However I just realised that lolzeez sent me Genesis.. (He sent me during the previous round because of his trip and I didn't pay attention)

I won't accept his submission, but since I didn't get back to him on time, I will let him send me something when he comes back from his trip...

Assessing the rest...

Might of been me, I have a hard time sending emails in general and prefer the pm system for our roulettes so sending an email with roulette, round, song, my name, the name of my genital herpes medication, my first born's name, my preferred vehicle brand, Run DMC, the Sopranos, and Bob Barker.........ALL in the subject line.  Well, it's a tad tedious.

but honestly, this is the only way for me to squeeze in a roulette in my super-hectic schedule...  without major delays and mistakes all over the place.
So I thank you for putting up with that tedious rule! Appreciated...

I actually have an idea for Round #7 ... and I give you 2 options...

a) Melody
b) Harmony

If you choose option a, give me something with a beautiful melody. Your song won't be assessed for anything else.. It doesn't haven't to be technically competent... complex or anything.... I find myself gotten addicted to some songs because of the haunting/catchy/mind-blowing/[insert cool-sounding adjectives here] melody although they are too flat for my taste...

If you choose option b.. same idea basically.. It can be harmonization of vocals and / or instruments... Show me some tastefully and masterfully added layers...

typing out the results now....

RESULTS

Round 5 : Band

lonestar- Ever Forthright 7

I love this sub-genre… but I had tough times scoring this one….
I think the problem is the extra (unnecessary)  layers present in their music... There were parts that I muted the song to see whether I had some other song playing in the background.
What a shame, they actually have some cool stuff going on there… jazzy midsections, nice vocals.. awesome guitar sound.. competent delivery…..
I have to admit though, this one seems to be more of a grower…. You know it might take some getting used to… and I will commit that time and thank you later  ;)

Scorpion – Kalmah - 3

Not completely new to me … Since I never went through their whole catalogue entirely, I accepted the submission…
Same result though…. They don’t do it for me…

Onno - Diablo Swing Orchestra 9.5

Yeah I know DSO.. It’s been very popular on the roulettes around here… I wasn’t impressed.. but you obviously chose perfect songs to cater to my taste… dark and aggressive… Seriously .. hot damn… progressive jazzy metal?? Gimme!
I blame ‘A Tapdancer's Dilema’ … there has  always a huge hype about that song.. and I simply don’t like it… again no one can question the quality here… …  just don’t like uplifting / happy songs… However, I realise that this makes me miss out on much.. so I will be open minded and teach myself to appreciate the good uplifting songs… thanks for showing me their darker side though…. I would never give them another chance..
'Justice For Saint Mary' is absolutely amazing!!!  dark.. very dark…. I loved the Creepy strings.. they gave me goosebumps… the explosion towards the end with the frantic drums coming in.. oh my! and that electronic bits thrown in caught me by surprise… I am floored…. Clearly, I hadn’t seen enough of this band..
'Poetic Pitbull Revolutions' owned me from the get go… eargasm!!!…
After hearing those 2 songs. I said.. screw the roulette I will listen to DSC all day  :lol

Ytse - Crown The Empire – Limitless 8.5

Now this was absolutely fantastic.. Hot damn! I never heard of them before…
There are so  many core bands out there.. sounding similar... generic… .. a band have to differentiate themselves to get my attention..  these chaps nailed it …. Electronic touch.. wide range of  sound effects… fantastic varied vocals.. .. so good man! Thanks for this band…

Ruba - The Young Gods 3
Mm I don’t know… not for me…. completely new to me though… never heard..

Jingle Winger 8

I’ve got nothing to say…. Way to pick out a band I overlooked during my glam fangirly years. These guys definitely know how to craft beautiful songs.. fantastic harmonization too…. …

Lolzeez – Genesis

not assessed…. I will when I get a new band …

Elite – Dagoba 6

You guys seem to have understood my taste
But hell!  Are my ears a bit tired of music overload or am I getting old… lol…  I found their music a bit too busy… If I was the engineer, I would mix it slightly differently…  or if I was the producer, add some clean vocals to give the listener a pause to breathe and the possibility to better appreciate the brutal parts…
But I shouldn’t be harsh on myself.. My ears are perfectly fine… Take Gojira for instance.. I can listen to them 18 hours a day.. so there is a quality gap there… they probably not melodic enough...

lonestar 37,5
Onno   37,2
Elite     36,1
Ruba    29,9
Scorpion 29
Ytse   28,5
Lolzeez   22,5
Jingle   22

Damnit Nem, you have quite an eclectic taste. I have never met anyone who dislikes Kalmah while liking Wintersun. so I thought a high score was guaranteed! Not that that's a bad thing at all, it just makes it more challenging, I guess.

I have an idea on what to send, but I'll mull my options first. You'll probably have it by tonight.

Ok.. just to clear things up....

This round (#6) is open....
I see some players highlighting the melody aspect in their submissions....  I'll modify the OP to avoid the confusion... you know just in case... ;)

And by melody I mean something like this: ANDROMEDA - Lies 'R' Us (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uj5bmbKiqGM)
This is not the most technical song on the album but mang..... that vocal melody is blowing my mind!!!

And spidey.. that not-so-bad guitar player on your submission happens to be the founder of Andromeda and I happen to be familiar with all his projects... also I happen to have interviewed (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwWuOpX0L40) him lately.. so ... you might want to send something else....  ;D

and same goes for Sco :/
That album scored 5/5 on LO.... heard it million times... I know you're busy with exams though... happy to accept your first submission .. your choice :)

RESULTS

Round 6 Open
Nice round!

Ruba - The Confession - Through These Eyes 8

Nice song…. Technically that awesome yet so catchy and energizing… in fact the catchiest song this round... great vocal melodies and good delivery… I like the pounding drums and the shredding… it could use a better post-production though… overall I like it… I cranked it up and listened to it many times  :tup

Ytse - Motionless in White - Devil's Night 5

Marylin Manson? :P
well yeah not original.. but it’s not one of the criteria here… not bad.. not awesome.. somewhere between mediocre to good..  I love metalcore meets electronic type of music… nice synths and everything.. but nothing stood out to make me wanna come back to it ….

Scorpion - Extreme - Play With Me 4

Poor Sco.. sent me three bands all of which I am familiar with.. mails back and forth.. I accepted his last submission considering the fact that he is in between exams now…… This kind of rock is not my thing… I’ve never been big on Extreme… maybe in 90s a bit.. only like the Waiting for the Punchline album.. because Mangini is on

Loney Pomegranate Tiger - Maxims. 6

It’s a solid track… solid band.. and everything... you know there is a but coming don’t you :p
well in order for an instrumental to sit with me, it has to have an addictive melody… (See Satriani The Forgotten pt2) I love technical wankery .. Yes... but only in the form of passages between vocals… if parts of this track cut through a song it could blow my mind.. if you see what I mean..

JingleBoy - Vengeance – Engines 5

Shreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed!!!! That was really good… I still don’t like the rock’n’roll vibe though (thankfully it is obscured by the speed  ;) )

Elite - Ghost Brigade – Breakwater 9

wow… someone has a good feel for my taste now  :o melodeath meets doom check….growls / clean vox mix.. check… rich texures, dark & depressive sound..  check… thick distortion.. nice riffage.. check…
horror samples add tons to the atmosphere too.. …
I absolutely loved it.. haunting piece! Ghost Brigade is definitely going to my  melodeth/doom folder (Swallow The Sun, Katatonia, Paradise Lost, Theatre of Tragedy, Amorphis , Opeth etc) …  Thanks mister!

Onno - Barren Earth - Forlorn Waves 8

All those ^ I said above could apply to Onno’s submission too…. My problem with Barren Earth is the folky lead guitar melodies or (hippie flute sections) like the ones at the 2.42 minute mark.. that short passage didn’t kill it for me, though.. Maybe I am growing up a bit
I will definitely give them a fair chance this time! Thanks!

Lolzeez-Angra-Angels And Demons 7,9
I used Angra in somebody’s roulette myself  :lol .. I think it was LieLow’s… but oh well… Angra was a a huge improvement after Jethro Tull, Genesis and Riverside in terms of obscurity  :lol .. so I accepted it…
yeah.. I love this music… it’s all I am gonna say…

So this the what we've got now....

Onno   45,2
Elite     45,1
lonestar 43,5
Ruba    37,9
Ytse   33,5
Lolzeez   33,4
Scorpion 33
Jingle   27

that leaves everything to the last round... high competition there.. I wouldn't want to be you now  :lol

Lolzeez's last round submission
Quote
Lolzeez – Round 5 -- Harmonium-Histories Sans Paroles 3
not for me….

A request for the last round... please add your choice to the subject line:

Roulette - Round 7 - participant name - Choice - Artist name - Song name
Roulette - Round 7 - Ytse - Melody - Some Metalcore band - Some song

you didn't mention it in your submission either...

and what difference would it make even if it was Malmsteen, Gilbert or Petrucci? it's still rock'n'roll...  :lol

Tough, tough call here, I have the perfect harmony song, but I do have some reservations about it. Gotta think this one over.....

Guys.... I feel the need to mention this for some reason... melody / harmony is a theme... I will still base my scoring on my taste....
I don't care what a competent layering it is... if I don't like the song, you will score low.....

If your song doesn't fit the theme.. you will again score low...

Here :)

I actually heard that Ghost Brigade album for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I like it, although my favorite songs are the ones with least growls. :tup to Onno for sending Barren Earth!

Ghost Brigade is definitely going to my  melodeth/doom folder (Swallow The Sun, Katatonia, Paradise Lost, Theatre of Tragedy, Amorphis , Opeth etc) …
Sounds like an awesome folder! :2metal:

So, let me see if I got this straight; if I would choose 'melody' it doesn't matter whether you'll like the song or not, just if it contains an awesome melody, you'll rate it highly? For instance, if I would send 'Call Me Maybe' and you really like a particular melody in that song, while dislike the overall tune, I would still get a high score?

yes pretty much.... but again... If the melody gets to me... and make me like the song, I won't score it low because it is technically weak...

for instance... BMUBMD is technically the weakest song the album (IMO).. but it has a fantastic melody and I loved it... although it lasts shorter than the other songs on the album...

If it is strong on all departments, of course that's a bonus...  ;)

hope that makes sense....

Holy mother of god! What a brilliant round.. What a fantastic way of ending this roulette….  (Except we couldn't) You all scored very high… Congrats! I am very lucky to have had brilliant team of players with fantastic taste and deep knowledge in music … I thank you all for your time and effort and for being such a great and gentle team of players!
And special thanks for taking the low scores well and putting up with my disgusting comments here and there… with such nice players, one can run a roulette every month!

I am very sorry but we don’t have a winner yet… I listened to the songs many many times and scored them carefully…  At the end, there was a ridiculous ranking…  top three players scoring 53 – 53,1 and 53,2.. I thought of the entire roulette and still didn’t feel comfortable to announce any of the three a winner as they did an equally good job… … so I will have to ask those three to send me one more song, and some of those to screw up and break the tie   :lol … and let me feel at ease  …

Scorpion - Melody - Galneryus – Emotions -8.5

I was introduced to this band by a friend who is really into Japanese music scene… Syu is beast of a guitarist… Haven’t tracked down their albums though…  Thank you for bringing them up.. This song definitely lives up to its name and walks you through wide range of emotions… through fantastic (and fast) keys and guitar solos, and they’ve got some high quality shredding there.. I would also like to congratulate you for your courage after what I said about lonestar’s submission and instrumentals in general.. you obviously had faith in the strong melody element of this track and mang…  are you justified in your faith!

JingleBoy - Melodic - Lee Aaron - Metal Queen – 6

Great song from friggin 80s!
The best part is that the title and the lyrics are about me  at least... so I’ve been told :P

Quote
She come like thunder.. risin' from the ground
She'll bring you under she moves without a sound
She holds a passion, like no other could..
Now when she talks.. the word's understood
She holds a power, like no other man..
Now when she runs.. catch 'er if you can…. Hahaha
Metal Queen.. -- rocks your soul / takes control
:obscure:

Ytse - Mind Odyssey 7

Great submission.. guitars are sick… bass is yumm.  The only thing why it didn’t score higher is that it has this old school German power metal vibe.. not that it’s bad.. I just am over that phase now.. due to over hearing probably..

Onno – Melody - Anathema – Closer 8

This is my honest opinion about this submission and Anathema in general… …  I know some of you will hate me and, even worse, some of you will pity me for this statement (as I’ve been there myself with some other bands…) but I could never understand the hype for Anathema… I’m glad that I am taking another step to rectify that (?)… although a baby step… I find atmospheric progressive rock a bit underwhelming.  I am trying not to be rude to the fans but to my mind Anathema’s music is tailor made for movie industry for instance.. I feel like it has to be a background to something.. to a touching scene maybe…
This particular song --- I love the overall atmosphere..the soundscapes, the rich textures and mang  it’s modern to its core. The subtle build up, followed by an explosion is yumm…
I am not turned off by the thick effects on the vocals… This is actually one of the best Anathema songs I’ve ever heard and it did fascinate me.
I had checked out ‘Hindsight’ album and decided once again that it’s not one for me… however ‘A Natural Disaster’ seems to be better …  has so much potential to make me a happy listener…

RJ - Melody- Disperse- Message from Atlantis – 9,7

This song blew me away…. Everything is so subtle and beautiful.. that vocalist is sending shivers down my spine every time… soundscapes.. the atmosphere… the explosion at around the 5 minute mark… and it’s modern as fuck… the guitar solo deriving from that main melody!!!! ….
I couldn't review the song better myself.. So I'll quote the chef:
Quote
So, the melody in this one starts right off, the simple dancing melody of the guitar and keys, but I love the way that throughout the song, no matter how intense it gets, the melody is weaved throughout it. I think it might also apply to harmony in that the intensity of everything else in the song is harmonized so well with the simple melody.

Elite - Melody - Soulfallen - We Are the Sand – 8,1

Yeah.. this is a very safe submission considering the fact that (as I mentioned quite a few times ) I love this sub-genre … but I have to say this piece was a very good one.. plus.. new to me..
The dismal, gloomy, hopeless, depressive tunes have always spoken to my soul although it’s not me at all… I know.. bizarre.. but yeah the reality ...  The singer got my attention and respect for his versatility as he covers both styles himself… his soaring clean vocals carry so much emotion..  I loved how the symphonic sounds take a back seat and take care of the atmosphere rather than shouting out loud ‘we are here, we are here’ !.. The weakest link of the sound is the drums… I haven’t checked but are they programmed? Especially the double bass didn’t feel organic, when it’s on the forefront.. If they are acoustic, then maybe it could be a little higher.. I don’t know.. that’s the only reason I couldn’t announce you the winner Elite  :-\

Ruba - Melody - Horizon - Autumn Closure - 7

Another safe submission but not as strong as the other one… Mang! This song could be really good with a better mixing & mastering…. Vocals are way higher in the mix than they should be ( for my taste of course) and the sound is not clean enough… it sounds like a rough mix… a demo of a song..  but still good…

Lolzeez - haven't submitted

Elite- Onno - lonestar -  53,2  <-- all winners for me
Ruba    44,9
Scorpion 41,5
Ytse   40,5
Lolzeez   33,4
Jingle   33

So yeah... Elite- Onno - lonestar --- Send me something within the next 24 hours and let me announce the winner... No theme…Go!  ;)

Congratulations my friend ;)

By the way Nem, did you by any chance listen to the other song I sent you in case you already knew SC? I'm curious whether you like that one or not. Won't change anything for the roulette, but still, I'm curious.
