Title: Onno's Roulette v. THE END
Post by: Onno on February 09, 2013, 12:14:12 PM
Hey everyone!

This is my first roulette, and I'm really looking forward to it! There will be 10 rounds. The participants so far are:

crazyaga
black_floyd
Elite
MoraWintersoul
Scorpion
Lolzeez
lonestar
Big Hath
Dr. DTVT
Nihil-Morari

I have decided that the maximum number of participants will be 10, so there is ONE more spots left. If you want to participate, just post that here in this thread :)

RULES

1. You may not send me a song that is longer than 10:00, with the exception for the last round (oh, guess what the theme for the last round will be?)
2. You are allowed to send me a song by an artist that has already been sent before in the Roulette, but not if I put that band on my Forbidden list in between rounds.
3. Scoring will be done on a 1-10 scale.
4. There will be some random side-missions/tasks thrown in rounds. I myself have some ideas what they might be, but most of them will just enter my mind sometime and will be put into the Roulette as a result of that. Yes, I am a systematically chaotic person. NUGGET
5. I have determined 10 different round themes. I have so far only assigned a theme to the first and last round; the rest of the themes will be assigned to the rounds randomly. If I would come up with more or better round themes during this Roulette, I am allowed to change themes, but you wouldn't notice anyway because I won't state the theme of a round until it starts.
6. You can send me your entry by PM. I prefer YouTube links, but you can also send a song using Spotify if you want to.
7. BANANA TERRACOTTA TERRACOTTA PIE!
8. You may not send anything that's on my Forbidden list. I am allowed to add things to that list during the Roulette. I have probably forgotten some bands, so I have the right to refuse your entry when I've forgotten to put it on my Forbidden list. Without further ado, before anything else happens, to cut a long story short, delaying no longer, here's the Forbidden list.

I have round themes in mine, but they are so open and vague and include stuff you'd want in the song you're sending anyway, I don't think anyone will have a problem with them :)

It depends on the purpose of running the roulette is.  If you just want to have fun, then they are fine.  But for the purposes of discovering music I don't care for them.  And I only came to that conclusion once I ran my own roulette.  I just hate when I don't get to send some bands because I'm fitting things into themes.

I will suggest that when you add bands to the banned list, make it very clear when you do so.  Maybe have a standard, like "Any band scoring over 5 (or whatever score you want) is banned".  One more suggestion - no wager round at the end.  Almost everyone bids all their points so it just becomes whether or not people ahead of you screwed up one round despite being stronger through the entire game.

Yep,
He knows.  He hasn't updated the OP since I joined.  Time stamps are wonderful things  :)
^That.

There will be no wager round. My round themes will also cover a lot of different genres and types of music, so I hope you'll be able to send everything you want to send. I just thought a roulette without themes would be a bit dull :)
Also, the final round will either be an Epic Round or another Open Round. Either way, the Epic Round will be included.

I will suggest that when you add bands to the banned list, make it very clear when you do so.  Maybe have a standard, like "Any band scoring over 5 (or whatever score you want) is banned".
There won't be a standard, but I will state all the new additions to the Forbidden list after a round.

For me it's a bit ofo both, but even for discovering new music I like having round themes, because you get more variety of music that way. But I know it can be annoying to try and find things within the theme, which was why I tried to make most of mine not too specific. Nick was the worst at round themes. "Send me a song by a band with three members". "Send me a song by a band with a black member". "Send me a song exactly 4:04 in length".

I agree about wagers, I don't like them. Double points in the final round is fine though, that can up the stakes a bit.

Don't worry, the themes will not be that specific. And yes, it's a bit of both. Of course I want to discover some new music, that's why the Forbidden list is there. But fun is even more important :)

Nick was the worst at round themes. "Send me a song by a band with three members". "Send me a song by a band with a black member". "Send me a song exactly 4:04 in length".

I have 44 songs that are exactly 4:04 in length, so I'm perfectly ok doing that round again.  Just don't go to exactly 4:05, I only have 43 of those, or worse yet 4:03,  I only have 37 at that length.

Also, sent yesterday.

Title: Re: Onno's Roulette v. Round 1 Results!
Post by: Onno on February 12, 2013, 02:38:17 PM
ROUND 1 RESULTS!

High scores everywhere!

crazyaga: Stars of the Lid – A Meaningful Moment Through A Meaning(less) Process

This is something different than the other songs I received. It was about the seventh song I judged, and it really relaxed me. Quite beautiful and nice to clear your thoughts. But even though I liked the song, I don’t think I could make it through an album of songs like it, since it is so minimalistic. Maybe it’s too silent, I don’t know. But listening to this stuff for too long would probably make me sad, though I don’t really know why. I also found it really hard to judge this song; judging it means also comparing it to the other songs, and it’s just such a different type of music. I did my best though.

7.3/10

Nihil-Morari: Led Zeppelin – I Can’t Quit You Baby

Wow, this song is really bluesy! I like it. The bass is a bit low in the mix unfortunately. The guitar is great, and I would expect no less from Mr. Page. This song made me realise why John Bonham is regarded as a fantastic drummer; the drums are really great and the small details are nice. The great thing is that I didn’t even notice these details until I listened a bit better. Overall it’s a cool song; I didn’t really like the lyrics though. They’re really straightforward and not really original, even a bit cheesy. It’s not really my thing. The song is good though.

7.5/10

MoraWintersoul: Dark Tranquility – Lost to Apathy

Really cool melodeath song. I like In Flames and through them I knew of Dark Tranquility’s existence, but I never really took the time to listen to them. I should have, though; this sounds really good. It’s a bit “standard”, but hey, they’re one of the first melodeath bands so I didn’t really expect to hear some mindboggling crazy shit. The melodies are great, the vocals are good and the drums are too. The choruses are quite catchy and fit the song well. The verses are nicely fast paced. The keyboards in the song are cool but a bit too low in the mix and the bass is WAY too low, I can barely hear it. The guitar solo in the middle part is pretty good too, but the bit before that where you can hear the keyboards really well and the guitar is a bit less prominent is just epic. But Milena, please never send me a 240p again :D I found the song on Spotify where the quality was way better. Also, the duration was about 30 seconds longer as well, so I guess they must have cut some bits in the official video you sent me. The last ~50 seconds of this song are really awesome. Overall, it’s a really nice song.

7.9/10

Big Hath: Avantasia – Lost in Space

Cool song! It’s a bit conventional, but it’s good nonetheless. The vocals are great, I especially like them in the choruses. The mix is good. The drums are really simple but it fits the song. The keyboards are great. The lyrics are nothing special, but since this is a song from a concept album, I will have to check that album out. The lyrics are a bit sad, but the song has an uplifting sound which is a good combination.

8.0/10

black_floyd: Byzantine – Ancestry of the Antichrist

Great song! The intro is cool, and I love that they reprise it at the end. The drums are cool. I like the guitar riffs and the lead guitar licks (or whatever they’re called) during the verses. The bass guitar should’ve been a bit more prominent in the mix, but I almost always want it to be more prominent so I guess that’s not really a new thing. I loved the percussion bit in the middle and the guitar solo after that was really cool too. I’m a bit of a nitpicker when it comes to harsh vocals/growls, but the growls featured in this song were good (even though I liked his semi-clean voice in the last verse even more). The lyrics are really cool. The ending is great (more percussion! :D). Overall it’s just a great song. Nice mix of genres, it’s quite unconventional.

8.4/10

Lolzeez: Genesis – Can-Utility and the Coastliners

A few months ago I put on a Genesis album (I believe it was Selling England by the Pound) but I didn’t really like it. I guess I should’ve listened to it better; I was busy doing other things, so I heard it all but didn’t really listen well enough. This song made me realise my mistake in judging Genesis so quickly. It’s a really cool progressive song. Gabriel’s vocals are cool but not that fantastic, but they fit the song well. I really like the keyboards in this song. The guitar is awesome as well. Really, every instrument is cool in this song! I particularly like the bass guitar bit around 4 minutes. Overall, it’s just a great song with great lyrics.

8.5/10

Elite: Ben Folds Five - One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces

Wow Rich, you really hit the nail on the head there. Great song, I really like the prominence of the piano in the mix. The song is melodic, and it’s really rocking even though there’s no electric guitar. The singer is good and the lyrics are cool. The drums are simple but not boring and fit the song well. It’s just overall a great song; simple, catchy and it even reminded me of Flying Colors a bit, which is a good thing. One thing that made it extra special for me was the piano; I’m planning to start playing piano in the near future, and this song makes me want to start playing even more.

8.5/10

lonestar: Incura – Here To Blame

Wow, the intro is really cool. It’s almost a bit of classical music. The riff after that is just epic. The vocals are great, the drums are cool and the guitar makes me want to bang my head off. The keyboards are fantastic, though a bit low in the mix at times. Holy shit, this song just blew me away. The lyrics are cool, but not especially good. They could’ve been worse and I wouldn’t even have cared; this song is awesome. My only complaint is the bass guitar; way too low in the mix.

9.0/10

Scorpion: Cat Empire – Fishies

First comment: double bass! My uncle is a professional double bass player and I love the sound of that instrument. And the point where the trumpet came in... Holy shit, this is epic. This is such an uplifting song, and it stays interesting from begin to end. Love the piano solo and the trumpet solo. Too bad the double bass is a bit low in the mix later on in the song. The vocals are great too! The lyrics are good, but not too fantastic. It’s just a really nice song to which you can listen a great number of times without getting bored. I definitely need to hear more songs by these guys.

9.0/10

Dr. DTVT: Agalloch – Falling Snow

In the small write-up you sent in your PM to me, you said that Agalloch was very popular on DTF for a reason. Well, I must say that I have known about Agalloch for some time. I listened to them a few times but I just couldn’t seem to like the high pitched black metal vocals. However, I knew their albums were kind of worshipped everywhere and I wanted to like them. So I was really happy when you sent me this song.
The song starts off great. The mix is fantastic; this, combined with the music itself which is just excellent immediately creates a dark, haunting atmosphere. I love that. For me, it’s not the sort of dark atmosphere that makes me sad; it’s the sort of atmosphere that is just really beautiful. The harsh black metal vocals at first were a bit disappointing; I’m just really not used to them and as I stated before, I’ve always disliked them. But as the song went on and on, I started to like them more. After the listens I gave this song for the judging, I didn’t even mind them anymore. I still like the clean vocals a bit better, but the black metal vocals really contribute towards the atmosphere. The guitars, drums and bass are all just excellent and couldn’t be better in this song. The lyrics are fantastic; a bit indirect and really dark. This is just epic and I have no doubt I will start to like it even more over time. Congratulations, a deserved first place in this round!

9.5/10

I have used an 8-sided die to determine the theme for the next round! I rolled a 5, which means that the next round's theme will be...

ROUND 2: SHOULDA COULDA WOULDA (I don't know why it's called that)
Send me a song from one of the following genres that I should listen more to:

Prog from 1985 or older
Jazz
Blues
Fusion
Melodic death metal
Neoclassical piano music

A song doesn't only have to be of one of the genres above, as long as the song you sent doesn't contain only a trace of one of those genres. I have to be able to hear it.

You have until Saturday, 17:00 (5 PM) CET. Have fun!

Dammit, I just copied the link from the official video channel, I presumed they'd have it in decent quality :lol I had no idea how much crazier over "standard" melodeath could you tolerate. Their albums from '99 onwards piss on anything In Flames has done in the same time period, and The Gallery is a classic of melodeath alongside Whoracle and the Jester Race so I think you could really grow to like this band a lot.

Also, sent you a no-brainer excellent melodeath song/band at once :)

Thing is, for In Flames I really like Whoracle, Colony and Clayman. I don't really care about TJR though there are some good songs on there. But I like everything they've done after Clayman (with the exception of Soundtrack To Your Escape). I like some albums/songs better than others, but I especially like Reroute to Remain and Come Clarity.

ROUND 2 RESULTS

More high scores! And congratulations to lonestar and Scorpion for having the same score once again  :lol

Dr. DTVT: Solution .45 – Gravitational Lensing

Well, what have we here? The singer is great and has a really versatile voice. Especially the chorus is great, nice and catchy. But I can’t say I really love the riffs. There isn’t enough melody IMO, except for the intro and outro. Some parts are cool but mostly I think it’s a bit dull. The guitar solo is cool though, as is the drumming. The mix is ok. The keyboards in the last part of the song are awesome, but they should’ve been higher in the mix and they would’ve really made that last part more awesome. The last 2 minutes of the song are way better than the first 3 anyway. Overall it’s a cool song, but for it’s nothing more than that. Highest score last round; lowest score this round, sorry

7.2/10

Scorpion: Luna Mortis – Ash

More melodeath! And female-fronted too. The vocals are ok, though I hate the double tracking (or whatever it’s called) which is especially obvious in the first clean bits. The harsh vocals are better, and later on in the song, there isn’t as much double-tracking. The guitar solo is absolutely fantastic and the riffs are cool. It’s a pretty cool song.

7.6/10

lonestar: Yes – Siberian Khatru

The first time I listened to this song, I didn’t really like it. Fortunately, it got better with each listen. There are some really cool parts in it, like the whole part from about 3:00 till about 4:10. I don’t really like Jon Anderson’s vocals that much though. At some parts in the song they’re really fitting, but at other times I don’t like them. Overall, it’s a cool song, but not that fantastic.

7.6/10

Elite: King Crimson – Epitaph

Cool song, though I think it’s really a grower and I need to listen to it more often and give it some time. Anyway, for the judging I listen to each song equally many times, so I don’t really have that time :lol . It’s a great song with pretty cool instrumentals, and it’s really quite proggy as well.

8.0/10

crazyaga: A Winged Victory For The Sullen – We Played Some Open Chords And Rejoiced....

Really beautiful piece of music. A tiny bit too ambient for me, but nevertheless really beautiful.

8.3/10

MoraWintersoul: Insomnium – Weather The Storm

Wow, this song is really melodic! I like that. The lyrics are epic and the singer is great. The riffs are really great! Too bad the mix is pretty bad IMO; the vocals are low at times, the bass is almost inaudible and the overall mix because really compressed and distorted sometimes, a bit like Metallica’s Death Magnetic.  Overall it’s a great song; the best melodeath song so far in this roulette.

8.4/10

Lolzeez: Frank Zappa – Willie the Pimp

Holy shit. The lyrics are brilliant :lol .  The singer sounds a bit weird but it really fits the song. What struck me as quite funny was the fact that it’s a 9 minute song, but that there are only vocals in the first ~2 minutes. So as I said, the lyrics are brilliant and the vocals fit the song; together, that means the first 2 minutes are great. The remaining 7 minutes are awesome! It’s just great huge instrumental section which doesn’t bore me even after repeated listens of the song. This is fantastic.

8.8/10

black_floyd: Rush – Natural Science

You know, there was a reason Rush wasn’t on my list. I’ve listened to them a few times, but I didn’t really like Geddy’s vocals at the time. But in this song, his vocals are ok, and the rest of the song is just great. Neil Peart is a bloody hero; not only is his drumming really awesome, but the lyrics are brilliant as well. I can relate to them a bit as well (I’m studying Earth Sciences). It’s another fantastic song.

9.0/10

Nihil-Morari: Joost Niekus (aka Nihil-Morari) – Be Good

And you composed this? It’s amazing, simply amazing. I love it. To quote myself:
One thing that made it extra special for me was the piano; I’m planning to start playing piano in the near future, and this song makes me want to start playing even more.

9.5/10

Big Hath: Dave Weckl – Like That

Holy shit. This is just perfect.

I thought it would fit perfectly in what he asked. Better than anything I know, so I sent some of my own work. And believe me, I've had some rough words on my songs before, so that would've been all good. It's not a competition of sending the best song, but sending a song you think someone would like.

ROUND 3 RESULTS

lonestar: Kill Ritual – The Serpentine Ritual

Thrash metal. That can either go very wrong or it can go really well. Why? Well, I used to listen to thrash quite a lot some years ago. This resulted in a very specific taste for thrash metal; if it’s too standard, I will really dislike the song. On the other hand, if the song is not that standard and the quality is good, I tend to love it.
Well, to cut a long story short: I didn’t like it. The riffs are nothing special. The same goes for the singer. The mix is good, though the instruments (especially the drums) sound a bit compressed. Anyway, the drums are again good but nothing special. The song itself isn’t necessarily a rip-off of old thrash, but it’s nothing new either and it’s really forgettable. Sorry man, I just don’t like it.

6.7/10

Elite: Pantera - Suicide Note Part II
Well, this is interesting. I’ve heard some Pantera before, but I guess it was not enough to spark my interest. And now you’ve sent me this song, which you only listen to when you’re really pissed off. Well, I can hear that. The main guitar riff is really fast and angry but still is boring IMO. The riffs in the chorus are a bit better, and the riffs in the breakdown and the last part of the song are a bit better as well. The guitar solo is cool though. The drumming is nice and aggressive but nothing more than that. I don’t like the vocals really, they’re a bit overdone IMO. I’ll have to admit, this is a really aggressive song and I can bang my head to it. I can understand that it’s really a good song to let all the anger out when you’re really pissed off. But I already have better songs for that sadly  It got better after a few listens, but it’s still not mind-blowing.

7.0/10

MoraWintersoul: Outworld – War Cry

This song is pretty cool. The vocals are great, and most of the riffs are. But the song gets slightly dull after repeated listens. It should have been shorter IMO. I don’t really like the mix either; my usual complaints (bass & keyboards are too low in the mix) apply here :P The chorus is great and the guitar solo is ok, but as I said, the song drags a bit. Overall, it’s an okay song but that’s all.

7.2/10

Lolzeez: Symphony X – Church of the Machine

I have listened to Symphony X before, but I didn’t put them on my Forbidden list, for I thought they were really repetitive. The only albums I’ve heard were (I think) Paradise Lost, Divine Winds of Tragedy and The Odyssey. This song sounded familiar though, so I might have heard Twilight in Olympus once or twice too. Anyway, I didn’t really love the song. I like Russel Allen’s vocals, they’re really good. The guitar riffs were pretty good too but they got boring after a few listens. The choir-like choruses are ok, but nothing fantastic. The keyboards were really nice though, and really created atmosphere. Most parts of the song were cool, but it all went on for too long, and I didn’t like the choruses. The instrumental parts and solos were cool but that’s all I guess. I guess I just don’t really like Symphony X; I thought they were too repetitive and this song didn’t change my mind.

7.4/10

Nihil-Morari: Meshuggah – Demiurge

Ah. Meshuggah. I should’ve expected them. Many people seem to like them a lot nowadays. I’ve only heard a few songs by them, and they didn’t really spark my interest. Moreover, I even saw these guys perform live about two months ago at a festival that Elite and I were attending. I didn’t really like them there either; they were very repetitive. And now you have forced me to listen a bit better. Well, then I guess that’s what I’m going to do.
First of all, I should say that the quality of this music is high. I saw these guys perform live and it was tight as hell. Each of the musicians in this band is good. And with each listen, this song sounded a little better to me. The vocals are ok, though nothing special. The riffs are okay; my main problem with them was that they were really repetitive. There were definitely some cool bits, but overall it sounded very much the same. The drums are fitting. I love the mix; everything is clear, even the bass guitar. The lyrics are great. Overall, it’s a cool song, though really repetitive. Only at 3:30, it sounded like things were going in a different direction, but it turned out that they just went back to some more riffs.

7.6/10

Big Hath: Bruce Dickinson – Book of Thel

I’ve never heard any solo work of Bruce before, so I’m really curious. I like Iron Maiden and I love Bruce’s vocals, so this should be good. Anyway, the first few minutes of the song remind me of Iron Maiden a bit; not only Bruce’s vocals, but also the riffs, which seemed plausible since Adrian Smith played guitar on this album. But after about 3:30, the song begins to develop a sound that is a bit different, and that doesn’t remind me of Iron Maiden too much (though the guitar solo still did). This song is just really good. I don’t have anything else to say :lol

8.0/10

black_floyd: Death – Without Judgement

I am writing this now while I haven’t heard even a single second yet of the song you sent me. Why? Because I wanted to say this: you have unconsciously taken a risk by sending me this song. Why? Because I tend to dislike early death metal vocals even more than I dislike black metal vocals. I have heard a song by Death before, and I know they’re supposed to have written some amazing music, but I didn’t like the vocals last time. So here I am now, listening to Death again.
Well, as I expected, I didn’t like the vocals. But I didn’t dislike them nearly as much as I did before. Moreover, everything else was great. The riffs, the drums, the lyrics, the mixing, everything. Just a great song. I especially liked the fast bits before and during the choruses.

8.1/10

Dr. DTVT: Enslaved – Clouds

Ok, this song starts out pretty non-metal IMO. Fortunately, it becomes a bit heavier later on; otherwise it wouldn’t have fulfilled the round theme. Anyway, really interesting song. More black metal vocals, so you took a risk again. Still, I seem to mind them less and less. The clean vocals aren’t that great though.  The section from 4:00 or so really reminded me of Crack the Skye (the album) by Mastodon. That’s a good thing, since that is one of my favourite albums of all time. Overall, it’s a great song, and I’ll definitely be listening to these guys some more.

8.1/10

Scorpion: Strapping Young Lad – We Ride

I’ve been wanting to check these guys out for a while, since Devin was in them. So I guess this is the perfect opportunity! When the song started, I immediately came to the conclusion that this song was not about subtlety, which is good (well, at least for this round). Devin’s vocals are awesome as always, and the lyrics are good (WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN MY FACE? :lol ). This song is tight as hell and it did make me want to bang my head! It’s aggressive, tight and even though it’s a bit repetitive, its short length keeps it from being boring and makes it a very enjoyable song.

8.4/10

crazyaga: Dog Fashion Disco – The Sacrifice of Miss Rose Covington

“THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELLS YOU!” Wow, this is fantastic. Really nice avant-garde metal that I can easily bang my head to. Just amazing.

9.3/10

Next round....
ROUND 4: BICYCLE SHOESTRINGS!
Title says it all. Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the random chaos round! Refer to Rule #7 of the Rules for more information! I tend to be chaotic and random as a person quite often, so I made a round theme which incorporated that! This round you are to send me music of a random or chaotic nature. By this I mean for example avant-garde metal (i.e. Leprous), songs that have both chaos and randomness in music and lyrics (i.e. System of a Down) or just music with random lyrics and strange instrumental shit. I don't really care; chaos and randomness have quite broad definitions, so surprise me and you'll get points! You have until this Sunday, 22:00 (10 PM) CET.

This round will require some meditation.

How much over is it? If it's slightly over it might be because of blank time at the beginning or end, or the uploader stretched the song out by an extra 1 or 2% to get by the filters.  Or you can do the teacher method and just penalize for not following directions.

It's almost 2 minutes over, and there's almost no blank time. I've refused other entries before because they were too long, and if I accept this one then people might be upset because their first choice wasn't accepted because it was too long and this one is. That's not really fair, so I want another entry. It was my mistake for not noticing its length until I started judging; I usually check everything.

Well, here are the results (except Big Hath's song which I will judge as soon as I get it). Sorry for the short writeups guys; I'm just really busy so I just wrote some very short commentary instead of droning on and on about every single aspect of each song.

ROUND 4 RESULTS

black_floyd: Spiral Architect – Insect

Cool song, but it couldn’t really get to me. It’s definitely not bad though.

7.7/10

Elite: Maudlin of the Well – Gleam in Ranks

Great song, I especially like the intro. It’s really subtle and has a nice calm-before-the-storm mood. The lyrics are great, and the music is too. I’m not too fond of the vocals though, they’re a bit dull.

8.1/10

Lolzeez: Can – Soup

Very weird song, but it really intrigued me. The vocals are a bit weird though. The intro is really weird and the whole section after that is really cool.  After about 5:30, shit gets weird again. It’s epic :lol Really weird song, but that’s what I asked for, and this is really interesting.

8.1/10

crazyaga: Sleepytime Gorilla Museum – Gunday’s Child

Great song. Really interesting. I like the lyrics too.

8.6/10

Dr. DTVT: Koenjihyakkei - Angherr Shisspa

DOUBLE-U TEE EFF. This is indeed random. And chaotic. In fact, I think it’s the most random song I’ve received this round. And it’s a good song as well.

8.6/10

lonestar: Pyramid Theorem – Forever in Chains

Although this song isn’t as random or chaotic as I’d expected, it has a nice prog sound and is generally just really good. I love it; my only complaint is that it doesn’t entirely fit the round theme.

8.8/10

Nihil Morari: Giraffes? Giraffes! - I Am S/H(im)e[r] As You Am S/H(im)e[r] As You Are Me And We Am I And I Are All Our Together: Our Collective Consciousness‚ Psycogenic fugue

BEST TITLE EVER!!!!1111!1111!!!! Seriously, it’s just random as hell :D Other than that, the song is amazing, and the voice sample is fantastic. And this is a two-man band? Wow.

9.0/10

MoraWintersoul: Dissona – Nest

Fantastic song, I really like the different styles and the contrasts. Fits the theme nicely.

9.0/10

Scorpion: Mr. Bungle – Ars Moriendi

Well, here it is then. The song that was sent 3 times. 3 times you say? Then it must be amazing, right?

Well yes, of course it is. Why would anyone think otherwise?

10/10

ROUND 5: DARKNESS IMPRISONING ME!
This round is all about dark moods and lyrics. Send me a song that has a really sad and dark atmosphere. It doesn't have to be heavy or doomy; on the contrary, I think I'd prefer sad but beautiful songs (i.e. DT - Disappear or Anathema - Lost Control). Good luck! The deadline is this Friday at 17:00 CET.

Yes and on the other hand, we get screwed for sending in later than someone else, even though we're still within limits. In fact, I've sent Ars Moriendi more often for these kind of rounds, so I knew very well I was going to send it here as well. Just because I was later, I had to resort with something less suitable.

To be honest, I've always allowed people to send the same song in the same round (though had rules on the same band being used in later rounds, usually only allowing it if I scored below a certain level) and it's only happened to me once in two roulettes (three, if you count the Roulette of Champions). Technically it means there's slightly less scope to discover new music, but I've discovered SO MUCH from my roulettes that it hasn't really bothered me.

Tis entirely up to you of course. Some people focus on the game aspect, others more on the music discovery, I tried to balance the two, or rather not let either interfere with the other. :)

Post by: Onno on March 03, 2013, 05:59:13 AM
ROUND 5 RESULTS

Dr. DTVT: Enchant – Defenseless

I don’t think this song is very dark, apart from the lyrics, which are sad and OK. I don’t like the vocals, and while the guitar solo is good, I don’t really like the rest of the instrumentals. I’m sorry, but I don’t like this.

6.0/10

lonestar: IQ – Capricorn

I’ve seen these guys live once, and they didn’t really spark my interest at the time. I was curious when you sent me this song, because I wanted to know if I would be interested this time. Well, turns out I’m not. The song is not really that dark, and though the lyrics are good, I sincerely dislike the vocals. The instrumentals are OK, but nothing special. The sax is pretty cool though, but not enough to save the song. Overall, I don’t really like it, sorry.

6.0/10

Lolzeez: Van Der Graaf Generator – Killer

This sounds like nice old prog. The lyrics are really dark, but other than that, the song is too happy IMO. I don’t really like the vocals either. The instrumental parts are really cool though; but overall, it’s not nearly as dark as I’d wanted it to be, though it is a pretty OK song.

6.5/10

Elite: Enochian Theory – The Fire Around the Lotus

Cool song which fits the theme nicely. I didn’t really think of it as something special though. It was cool to listen to, but nothing more than that.

7.4/10

crazyaga: Swans – I Was A Prisoner In Your Skull

Wow, another unconventional entry by you! I guess I shouldn’t be surprised :D This is dark, but in a weirder way. It’s an interesting song.

7.5/10

black_floyd: Psychotic Waltz – A Psychotic Waltz

Dark mood, good lyrics, decent vocals and nice instrumentals. Good song.

7.8/10

Big Hath: Katatonia – The Longest Year

I’ve been wanting to check this band out for a while. I’ve heard a few songs before and it sounded pretty good. Anyway, this song has a really dark, beautiful and desperate atmosphere. I like that. The lyrics are good and dark too. The vocals are OK, but fit the song really well. Overall, it’s a great song.

8.3/10

Nihil-Morari: Gregor Samsa – These Points Balance

It’s a beautiful and dark song, but it’s almost too sad. It almost depresses me. Why? Because it’s so empty and slow. But it’s still beautiful and sad. And the more I listened to it, the less depressing it became. Great song.

8.3/10

Scorpion: Green Carnation – The Burden Is Mine... Alone

This is a really beautiful song. It’s really sad, and has simple but effective lyrics. It’s one of those songs which has only a guitar and some vocals, but it doesn’t need more. It’s great!

8.5/10

MoraWintersoul: Kamelot – Glory

This was the third song I’ve listened to, and the first one that I could say was dark. Although not extremely dark, it is certainly dark enough, and really beautiful. It’s sad and has good lyrics. The song has a really medieval vibe, which I really like. It’s short but that’s not a bad thing, its length is perfect! Great song. You know, I’ve seen these guys live on a festival ones. I should really look them up.

8.7/10

STANDINGS
As no one objected, I changed the scores of Elite and Nihil-Morari in the last round to 10/10, because they initially sent the same song as Scorpion. From now on, people who send the same song in a round will not have to send a new one.

black_floyd 41.0
crazyaga 41.0

ROUND 6: DREAMING LIGHT
After the depressing mess that was the dark round (???wut), you now enter a safe place where nothing can harm you. Send me a song that will get me happy even in my most depressing moods. Beautiful happy music that I already like (AKA tips): I love Anathema, especially their last two albums. The song you send me doesn't have to have happy lyrics; I cheer up by listening to DT - Beneath the Surface and Opeth's Damnation as well. Just make sure the sound of the whole song is happy. The deadline of this round is this Wednesday, 19:00 CET. Good luck!

Fuck yeah! :metal Like I said in my PM, you should definitely check out Light of Day, Day of Darkness, Green Carnation's magnus opus. It's one of the best things ever.

Happy stuff... you know, sucks that you're a Devy fan, otherwise I'd be sending Bender or Sunshine and Happiness without a second thought. This way, I'll have to think for a while.

This is gonna be a difficult one. I rarely listen to 'happy' music, and I don't really see how Damnation is a happy song, or Beneath the Surface. To be honest, I think that's closer to your last dark round. But lemme see what I got!

Haha, I'm sorry, I was meant to take 1 song off of damnation and put it there, but figured people might misunderstand me. The result of that is that I look stupid.

Well, let me take 'Death whispered a lullaby' then, that's not happy.

I second this suggestion :metal Kamelot have recently had a singer change but remained awesome, they're definitely the best power metal band ever (sorry, everyone else).

ROUND 6 RESULTS

Big Hath: Acoustic Alchemy – Columbia

Cool song; it’s enjoyable and relaxing, but for me, it’s nothing more than that.

7.3/10

lonestar: Kaipa – Treasure House

You said you were going way out on a limb with this one. Yep, you did. Too bad I didn’t like it that much. But don’t worry: it’s a decent song, and it’s happy.

7.3/10

Nihil-Morari: Sigur Ros – Ara Batur

Happy shit!

7.8/10

MoraWintersoul: Lunatic Soul – Summerland (remix)

Strangely beautiful song. Peaceful too, like you said. Interesting.

8.1/10

crazyaga: Sigur Ros – Se Lest

More happy shit; slightly happier than the previous happy shit!

8.3/10

black_floyd: Sting – Fields of Gold

I’ve heard some Sting and some songs by The Police, but I never really listened to it. I’ve probably heard this song before, it sounded familiar. Anyway, great song, really light, beautiful and relaxing. Almost a bit too simple though (instrumentally).

8.4/10

Scorpion: Extreme – Play With Me

This is a happy song, don’t worry. And it’s great! The intro is fantastic (fuck yeah, Mozart) and overall it’s just a great metal/rock song that’s also very uplifting. Great idea!

8.5/10

Lolzeez: Moody Blues – “Morning” Another Morning

Yay, this is a happy and beautiful song! It reminded me a tiny bit of early Pink Floyd, especially the vocals. It’s a good song to cheer you up in the early morning. The lyrics are good and are happy like the rest of the song, but the thing that stands out for me is the outro. It’s really, really beautiful. FANTASTIC! It reminds me of The Hobbit movie, which was great. Great song!

8.9/10

Dr. DTVT: Frost* - Experiments in Mass Appeal

This is a happy song, and a very good one too. Really proggy, it doesn’t drag and it’s beautiful. Nice one.

8.8/10

Elite: Spock’s Beard – June

Lol, I think we even watched Flying Colors perform this one during the gig we attended, remember? Anyway, I’d forgotten to check out SB in the meantime, so you had every right to send this. Score!

9.2/10

STANDINGS:
Scorpion 52.0

ROUND 7 RESULTS

This is one of the closest rounds so far I think!

Elite: Pain of Salvation – Iter Impius

Great song, though I’m not particularly fond of the vocals. It’s a cool song and I love the piano intro, but I don’t think it’s absolutely amazing. I guess I just don’t really like PoS or something.

7.8/10

Lolzeez: Solaris – M’ars Poetica
Really interesting prog instrumental from the eighties. I’m curious why this is such an unknown band, ’cause this is good stuff.

8.0/10

lonestar: Karnya – When The Silence Remains...

Hey man, good news for you! I like it :) It’s way better than your previous entries.

8.2/10

Dr. DTVT: Evergrey – Recreation Day

Really cool proggy metal song with some great solos, vocals and softer parts. Great!

8.3/10

Big Hath: Riverside – Reality Dream III

More prog instrumentals! This one’s great too, really heavy. I like it.

8.5/10

black_floyd: Gordian Knot – Muttersprache

Another great instrumental. Some great solos, it doesn’t drag, it’s cool. Don’t know what else to say really :P

8.5/10

MoraWintersoul: Seventh Wonder – Hide and Seek

Hey, this is a really cool entry. It’s proggy as I requested. It has some really cool sections, and the singer is good. The lyrics are good, and it’s from a concept album as well? I should listen to this album sometime!

8.7/10

crazyaga: Dark Suns – Megalomaniacs

Wow, what a fantastic mellow prog rock song. I love it! The vocals are great. Everything is so subtle; it reminds me of Heritage by Opeth a bit. And that’s good, ‘cause Heritage is one of my favourite Opeth albums. I also love the subtle piano and accordion sounds. It’s fantastic!

9.0/10

Scorpion: Ozric Tentacles – Coily

You said this was somewhat progish? Well, I think this definitely is prog. And it’s great! Nice instrumental that never once drags. Fantastic.

9.0/10

Nihil-Morari: Transatlantic – Mystery Train

Woohoo, Transatlantic. I had listened to The Whirlwind once or twice and then I’d forgotten all about them. Well, I shouldn’t have. This is great.

9.2/10

And now, we're on a highway to hell. I've got a baaaad feeling about this.
ROUND 8: WHAT THE HELL IS THIS GARBAGE?!?!?! MY FUCKING EARS ARE BLEEDING
Send me a song of one of the following genres that I absolutely do not like!

Hip-hop/rap
Most electronic shit (dubstep, techno, house, dance, you get the point...)
Deathcore/grindcore
R&B/soul
German folk music (Schlager to be more precise)
Dutch folk music (smartlappen in particular)
Gospel
J-pop, K-pop etc

A few important points here.

- I must be able to easily identify the song you send me with one (or more) of the previously mentioned genres. In other words, if you send me a song that's for example only partly electronic, I may decide that it doesn't fit the theme well enough, and I have every right to ask for another. I will listen to the song once as soon as I receive it to determine this, in order to prevent chaos ensuing after the deadline is over.
- If you think you have found a genre that I hate as much as those previously mentioned, you may ask me in this thread. For I probably forgot some genres, and if you manage to find another one I will add it to the list.
- Banned specifically for this round (might update this during the round, I will tell you if I do)
   - Radiohead (still want to listen to them sometime, and Kid A is entirely electronic IIRC)
   - more might be added

The deadline for this round is this Sunday, 21:00 CET.

Lolzeez: Solaris – M’ars Poetica
Really interesting prog instrumental from the eighties. I’m curious why this is such an unknown band, ’cause this is good stuff.

8.0/10

Hey guys, I received all your entries but I probably won't be able to judge in the next few days. I'm still ill, but my simple flu has turned into an inflammation of my throat (is that correct English?). So obviously I'm really screwed up now. I'll judge when I'm feeling better.

Thanks. And no problem, everyone's partly responsible

Or he might have gotten sick from my grindcore song :lol
I have thus far only listened to the first few seconds, and from that I could determine it was grindcore, so that was enough. If I start puking when I'm judging I'll let you know.

Or from my hip hop song.

ROUND 8 RESULTS

Brace yourselves. Well, some of you.

Lolzeez: Death Grips – Get Got

What the f*** is this. I assumed this was made by a guy who’s permanently on speed? It’s so crazy that it’s funny at first, but I start to dislike it the more I listen to it. I can’t really imagine anyone who would seriously listen to this and think it’s good music, except for Ali G. I dislike this.

4.8/10

Elite: DJ Shadow – Midnight in a Perfect World

It’s ok, but it’s pretty boring. It’s relaxing in some way, but it’s definitely something I would really listen too. It’s not very good.

5.4/10

Scorpion: Abstract in the Sky – The Magician’s Sleeve

This was really new for me, I’d never heard trip-hop before. But since it is pretty much a combination of hip-hop and electronic, I accepted it. Anyway, it’s quite nice actually. Pretty relaxing. But it lacks variance a bit, I’m not too fond of the electronic beats and I don’t know if I could listen to an album full of songs like this. It’s not bad though.

6.3/10

lonestar: Al Green – Love and Happiness

Pretty decent soul/R&B. The lyrics are bad, but I’ve never heard good R&B/soul lyrics (I haven’t heard much though). It’s a pretty relaxing song and has some really cool parts, but overall it lacks a bit of variety. I couldn’t listen to an album full of songs like it though.

6.6/10

black_floyd: Drag Rap – Showboys

Well, this started out way cooler than I expected. The story told by the lyrics is pretty decent too. But it all goes on for way too long. About 3 minutes in the lack of variance broke my concentration. The beatboxing part is pretty cool, but after that it’s all the same again. It’s a cool song, but it needs more variety.

6.6/10

MoraWintersoul: Pig Destroyer – The Machete Twins

Right. Grindcore. You know, this was probably the best grindcore song I’ve ever heard. It’s not all about speed and it doesn’t have any pigsqueals. Still, it’s not too great, it’s a bit boring. I’ll probably love this when I’m drunk but you won’t get more points just because of that. Still, better than I expected.

7.0/10

Dr. DTVT: Young MC – Bust A Move

This was definitely not bad! Groovy song. Some cheesy lyrics, but who cares. It’s on the edge of being too long (little variety) though, but it’s definitely not bad. The percussion bit near the end is really cool! Pretty good song.

7.3/10

crazyaga: Massive Attack – Angel

Wow, this is actually a pretty cool song. I don’t really like the start because of the sound of the beat (I hate that kind of electronic drum sounds) and the vocals, which are a bit too whiny IMO. But it’s still a bit haunting and it becomes way more haunting later on, when it kind of explodes with added drums, a bit of guitars and bass. It’s pretty great actually.

7.5/10

Big Hath: Tower of Power – Soul Vaccination

Pretty great soul song. It has some great instrumental stuff going on. The vocals are pretty cool, the lyrics are not, but it’s soul, I wasn’t expecting better. The percussion is great and the trumpets are great as well. It’s just a very cool song.

7.7/10

Nihil-Morari: B. Dolan – Kate

This a really loaded song like you said, but it’s very good. I don’t think it’s really rap though, but it’s close. It’s more like spoken word IMO. But it’s really good and tells a really loaded story.

8.0/10

FORBIDDEN LIST UPDATE
Added:

B. Nolan
Tower of Power
Massive Attack

It's time for the penultimate round... an open round again!

ROUND 9: BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
This round you must send me 1 song of any genre that's not on my Forbidden list. BUT: You must also send me another song that fits one of the previous round themes to replace a song you sent me in that round. To put it this way: try to improve one of your entries, but abide to the rules of that round's theme and the current Forbidden list. You will once again receive points for the song you send me for the open part of the round, but you will receive bonus points for the improvement song. These bonus points are equal to the difference in points between the improvement song and the song you first sent me in the round you are trying to improve. And please state which round's entry you're actually trying to improve. Get it? It's not that hard, but I feel my explanation made it seem harder. Whatever. Deadline is next Sunday, 21:00 CET. Good luck and have fun!

Yes, you may.

So this round is all open then? I don't quite get the 'one song of any genre that's not on my forbidden list'
I do get the improving bit though.

And I love the fact that 'Kate' was as heavy for you as it was for me. The part where the almost Steven Wilson-esque drone guitars come in give me goosebumps just thinking of it.

Sent. Sorry for the delay. My schedule now varies enough that I sometimes work until 10 pm and have to be back just 7+ hours later at 5:45 am so my ability to handle deadlines is a tad compromised.

Sent. Sorry for the delay. My schedule now varies enough that I sometimes work until 10 pm and have to be back just 7+ hours later at 5:45 am so my ability to handle deadlines is a tad compromised.
Don't worry, I'm busy myself, though not as busy as you.

ROUND 9 RESULTS

Nihil-Morari

Improvement song round 1 (open): Bass Communion – Ghosts On Magnetic Tape II

You sent me something ambient? That’s brave, since you must have seen that the previous ambient songs I received weren’t ranked that highly. But this is by the master Steven Wilson, so I’m really curious.
Well, it’s pretty beautiful, that’s for sure. But after a few listens, I didn’t want to listen to it anymore. It seems that ambient is just not something for me. I might be able to listen to it when I’m really tired and lying in bed, but every other time, I just can’t listen to this long enough. It’s still good music though, and I really liked it the first few listens.

7.7/10; Previous score: 7.5; Bonus points: 0.2

Open song: Scott Walker – Jesse

Very interesting lyrics; great, haunting melodies. This is really interesting. Reminded me a bit of Drag Ropes by Storm Corrosion. But holy shit, I almost can’t stand the vocals. Really.

7.0/10

black_floyd

Improvement song round 8 (garbage): Black Sheep – The Choice Is Yours

Slowly, I’m starting to realise that rap is art too and that and sometimes I can even like it. Though this is not amazing, it’s certainly pretty good, and better than your previous entry.

7.4/10; Previous score: 6.6; Bonus points: 0.8

Open song: Rage – Set this World on Fire

Prett cool metal song with some great riffs, though pretty cheesy. It’s definitely not bad though.

7.5/10

crazyaga

Improvement song round 1 (open): Radiohead – The Tourist

Another band that I’ve been wanting to check out earlier. My brother listens to them a lot, and I’ve always wanted to like them. Well, this is a nice mellow song. I think the vocals are a bit whiny, but the rest is great. Cool song to listen to, really beautiful.

8.0/10; Previous score: 7.3; Bonus points: 0.7

Open song: Radiohead – Like Spinning Plates

More Radiohead. That was quite risky; if I wouldn’t have liked Radiohead at all, you would’ve been screwed. But I liked the first song, so let’s see what I think of this.
It’s another great mellow song. I love the piano. But again, I think the vocals are a bit too whiny. But it’s still really beautiful.

8.0/10

lonestar

Improvement song round 3 (metal): Shokran – Dark Desert

So, according to the video description, this classifies as djent. Well, I’m really curious, since I haven’t heard much djent yet.
The riffs are pretty cool, and it’s not too repetitive. The solos are pretty cool as well. But I don’t really like the vocals and the song is pretty forgettable. This is better than your first metal entry though.

7.3/10; Previous score: 6.7; Bonus points: 0.6

Open song: Kingcrow – Right Before

This is a pretty great song! It definitely has some great melodies and riffs. The vocals are pretty good too. I like it a lot.

8.3/10

Scorpion

Improvement song round 2 (melodeath): Swallow the Sun – Out of This Gloomy Light

Great song. I have listened to StS some time ago, but I kinda forgot about them. This song reminded me of why I should start listening to them again. Really dark but still melodeath, with pretty good vocals, great lyrics and some haunting guitars and keys. Especially the keys are great; they keep the melody in the song despite the somewhat plain vocals sometimes. Great song!

8.5/10; Previous score: 7.9; Bonus points: 0.6

Open song: Buckethead – Hills of Eternity

Wow, this song was way more epic than I thought it would be. I’d never listened to Buckethead before, so I didn’t have any expectations or prejudices. The song is really repetitive, but in a good way. It’s really relaxing and just for some time makes you forget your troubles. It’s very beautiful indeed, just fantastic.

 8.7/10

MoraWintersoul

Improvement song round 3 (metal): Barren Earth – Forlorn Waves

There’s a lot going on in this song. Different kinds of vocals, lots of melody, death/doom bits, prog bits, and even some piano bits. I like this! It’s way better than your first try. I’ll need to check these guys out.

8.5/10 ; Previous score: 7.2; Bonus points: 1.3

Open song: Chroma Key – Another Permanent Adress

This is pretty great. I hadn’t heard any other work by KM before, and this is a lot different from what I’ve heard before obviously. It’s even classified as “electronic” on Wikipedia, which I partly agreed to (lots of keyboards, some bass and guitars). But it’s a great song. Need to check this shit out.

8.2/10

Elite

Improvement song round 7 (prog): Moon Safari  – Heartland

Wow, this is a very uplifting prog song. Really great. I had to get used to the vocals a bit, but I really liked them after a few listens.

8.7/10; Previous score: 7.8; Bonus points: 0.9

Open song: Fair to Midland – Dance of the Manatee

Epic proggy song with lots of great metal riffs, great vocals and cool lyrics.

8.9/10

Lolzeez

Improvement song round 8 (garbage): Aphex Twin – 4

I understand why you are trying to improve your round 8 entry, since your previous one wasn’t too good...
Well, it’s better, but not too good still. I hate this kind of electronic beats. The song is boring and yeah, still not good.

5.3/10; Previous score: 4.8; Bonus points: 0.5

Open song: The Mars Volta – Take The Veil Cerpin

I have tried listening to these guys once, but I thought the vocals were lame. I have never been so wrong. This is great!

9.5/10

Big Hath

Improvement song round 6 (light): Beyond the Bridge – World of Wonders

:hefdaddy

9.3/10; Previous score: 7.3; Bonus points: 2.0

Open song: Al Di Meola – Suite: Golden Dawn

Wow, I’ve received many instrumentals during this roulette. But this is one of the best. It’s really relaxing, it doesn’t drag, the guitar solos are just epic and the percussion is epic. I also absolutely love the bass and the mixing. Fantastic!

9.3/10

Dr. DTVT

Improvement song round 5 (dark): Swallow the Sun – Through Her Silvery Body

The second StS song I received; I like the other one a bit more.

8.3/10; Previous score: 6.0; Bonus points: a whopping 2.3!

Open song: Blind Guardian – Sacred Worlds

That intro is just amazing. And everything else is very amazing too! This song is very epic indeed. Nice one.

9.1/10

Just send Chain/Cities.  That's a good compromise.

Good thing BtB scored as good as it did.  Anyone scoring ANY song from that album less than an 8 should have their ears and/or brain examined.

I might do that.  Better get a ruling on it now then.

Onno, if a song is broken into multiple tracks, called part 1, part 2, etc., does that count as one song?  How about suites?  Or songs like "The Whirlwind" by Transatlantic?

Yay! Glad you liked Buckethead, he's really one of the most varied guitarists out there. He has it all, intense riffing, shredding, acoustic stuff, prog, industrial... you name it, and Buckethead's done an album in that style. Amazing musician.

Alright, time for some serious contemplation. I have three songs that I'm strongly considering, will probably come to a decision within a day or two.

ha! I bet half of them have come from me.  you may not have noticed, but that is Jaco on the bass.  The middle section where he and Di Meola are doing that awesome interplay is freaking amazing.

I'm almost finished (judged 7/10 songs so far). The 3 entries left are already reasonably long, but I should be done by Thursday or so. Maybe earlier.

Considering my song's 74 minutes long, it'll take a while.
Yep, but I've already judged your song.

ROUND 10 RESULTS

Lolzeez: Yes – Close to the Edge

The second Yes song I’ve received during this roulette. Although I admire the instrumental parts and the skill of the musicians, I don’t like the vocals very much and overall, it just doesn’t interest me that much, sorry.

7.0/10

black_floyd: Vinnie Moore – Hero Without Honor

I didn’t miss your comment on the youtube video for this one.... :lol

“Sometimes when I'm constipated, I put this song on and then the turds march triumphantly out in a blaze of glory.”

Anyway, for me this is a case of doubt. It’s a 7 minute long instrumental, how can it be an epic? Still, it has lots of variation and different melodies and riffs, and it sounds epic like, so I’ll give you the benefit of doubt. It’s a good song, but it’s not really much more than that for me. The solos are great, but that’s about it.

7.3/10

crazyaga: Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Sleep

More postrock... This song was decent, but after a few listens I’d had enough. It’s just not really my thing, though it’s really good in terms of quality.

7.4/10

Elite: Shadow Gallery – First Light

The second longest song this round. Well, where do I start? The intro is great, very Pink Floyd like. The vocals are good too. The rest of the song is good and includes some great instrumental parts. The silent bit in the middle feels a bit out of place and random, but the outro after that is great.
Overall, this is a decent song. It’s not really amazing, but it’s good.

7.8/10

Scorpion: Grayceon – We Can

This is one song that is a bit different from the others. The prominent use of the cello makes it sound very interesting, and the song has a bit more recurring themes/riffs/melodies. It’s really dreamy and beautiful, but the dreaminess makes it also a bit hard to focus on. It’s a good song though.

7.9/10

MoraWintersoul: Fates Warning – Still Remains

Great epic. The instrumentals are great and it’s fun to listen to. I’m not too fond of the vocals, but they’re decent. The lyrics are great and the mix is great. Great song!

8.4/10

lonestar: The Deadstation – Like Peering Into The Deepest Ocean Abyss

Well, this sounds interesting. It’s a cool prog epic with a huge metal side to it, and some electronic/industrial influences too. The song starts out with a bang with the chaotic and heavy “Drugs For The Pain Inside”. It’s a great start to a great epic. The instrumentals are great and dynamic, and the vocals are good too. The pace of the epic changes with the next song, “August 4th – 3:21 AM”. That song is pretty beautiful and quiet, with some sad instrumental backings and a desperate sounding spoken word voice-over. It transitions nicely into the next song, “Anything But This... Anywhere But Here”. That song once again displays some of the chaos also present in the first part, but it’s a bit less heavy and more focused on vocals and melody. One last piano note ends this track and introduces the last part, “I Cannot Explain Myself Anymore”. This track nicely closes off the epic with a reprise of “Drugs For The Pain Inside”. Altogether, it’s a really great epic. Nice!

8.6/10

Dr. DTVT: Phideaux – Waiting For The Axe To Fall
Wow, this is great. It’s an epic in prog rock style, with little to no metal influences. I’m not too fond of the male vocals, but the female vocals are amazing! The lyrics are great, and the instrumentals are fantastic, especially the keyboard/orchestral parts and the piano bits. Each different part of the song is great, but my favourite part by far is “The Claws of a Crayfish”. It has the best vocals, some great piano bits and epic melody. Great song!

8.8/10

Nihil-Morari: Fantômas – Delìrium Còrdia

Wow, now this is different. You’ve got balls for sending me an ambient/drone/whatever-this-is-that’s-not-really-a-typical-epic. This is very haunting and very intriguing indeed. I like it way more than I expected. It’s not suited for background music at all though, but that’s not what I asked for anyway. So, this is really cool, and really different. Nice.

8.8/10

Big Hath: Soul Secret – Aftermath

This is really good! It’s a fantastic prog metal epic. Everything is just great: the vocals, all the instrumentals, the solos, the melodies, the lyrics... Even the mix is good. I really love this!

9.0/10

Thanks Onno for doing this. I've had a great time, and I'll be sure to reread the thread once, when I want to try some new music. Good thing that you could handle the Fantomas. It's not a song I enjoy listening to, but I have to hear it every now and than, it's just too dark, horrible, horrid and makes me feel miserable like almost no other song ever has.

And: Third Place!  :)

Congrats Big Hath!

oh wow!  I am glad you found some interesting music in this roulette.  I am quite humbled by the messages of congratulations.  I certainly didn't think I would be at the top.

lonestar, The Deadstation was almost sent by me as well.  It was in the mix when I was deciding between 3 songs.  It's really great stuff.

Onno, awesome roulette!  Very fun to participate in.  Great job!

Milena is now the official DTF valley girl.  Like, for sure!

Thanks guys, this was really great! I've received a lot of great entries this roulette, and that means that there's a lot of bands that I still need to check out thoroughly. I'm having exams next week and have also been busy the last few weeks, but I'll definitely check everything out when I have time :)
