Title: MoraWintersoul's song roulette v. THIS IS THE END
Post by: MoraWintersoul on February 08, 2013, 02:31:45 AM
Alright you guys, welcome to my song roulette! Seven eight NINE fine fellas will be battling for the title of the champion, and they are:

ariich
Dr. DTVT
Elite
Lolzeez
Onno
Ruba
Scorpion
YtseBitsySpider (holy eff, everyone, you're battling the mystery judge :lol)
Mystery Participant

What you need to know:

a) I'm a metal person. Meaning, this is maybe one of the 5% of roulettes where you won't hear the words "don't send me growlies". Take advantage of that, I guess :lol I like crazy stuff and I like prog and I like... a lot of things I guess. So there are no genre limits. I guess you're best off with mildly melodic metal and prog, and I'm not really into -core stuff, but with a good enough band that can change!

b) Send songs to morawintersoul@gmail.com. I would prefer youtube links but sending files also works. Just no Spotify, since we don't have it here.

c) I have no time limit for songs, but if you send stuff over 20 minutes long routinely, when you have shorter songs that could just as well fit the purpose, you're going to make me spend a lot more time both listening and trying to judge the tune. Therefore you're slowing the roulette down. So if it's not the very definition of sublime, I am going to mentally deduce you points for being a dick to the rest of the participants :lol

d) list of forbidden bands. I haven't heard every album ever by all of these bands, but the chances of you finding some song of these bands that I haven't heard is pretty slim, so send stuff that's not in it.

e) List of rounds! I always curse cruel fate for using up something that would be perfect in a later round in the first round already. So here's a list of future rounds (in smaller font because some people would prefer not knowing, and in that case just scroll):
Round 1: open
Round 2: guitar-driven awesomeness
Round 3: something lyrically good. and if you're not a lyrically oriented person, send me an instrumental!
Round 4: eh fuck it I'll have another open round in the middle. SEND AWESOME STUFF basically.
Round 5: something I could dance to. Headbanging is also dancing, so you can get your death metal on.
Round 6: something with an amazing vocalist.
Round 7: Several songs, under a certain time limit.

What else. Uhm. If I've forgotten something let me know :lol First round is open and you have until Monday (sir Spider has informed me he's away 'til Sunday). Happy hunting!!!

This is gonna be fun... let's see what I can find for you. I have somewhat an idea what to send, but I'll probably take advantage of the deadline and think on it for a bit.

EDIT: No I didn't. :lol Sent.

Wait. Why is Ayreon not on your list!?
Because I've only heard two of their albums and that's not sufficient enough percentage. Same with Pink Floyd, I've heard maybe four or five.

My introduction to heavier music back in the day! :metalol:

My taste is too similar to yours, so I won't participate, but I already gave you a couple of recommendations anyway. However, I find the lack of Katatonia in that list disturbing  Forsaker has the most awesome one-chord riff ever heard in any song since The Mirror, and the chorus of The Racing Heart could melt mountains. If you want something proggier, try Dead Letters.

EDIT: Forgot about Departer - that song almost made Mikael Åkerfeldt cry and that says something!

I'll only say that it's a pity to not be included in this match because after looking at the list of forbidden bands, I still have a shitload of other great musicians to unleash. But I think I don't need a DTF thread to do so, right?  ;D

I'm pretty slow at taking up recommendations since my backlog is gargantuous and I mostly pick stuff off people who are not aware I am subtly analyzing their tastes and getting into their bands :lol but I quite like the practice of receiving songs that fit what I want to listen to that week from people who are trying to hit an arrow to the center of my tastes :lol so song roulettes are fun. Plus, a bit of forum bonding always warms my heart.

For the record, we've nothing against a mystery participant, and they can keep their secret by having someone else send their entries on their behalf (in the same way I posted Ytse's reviews etc when he was the mystery judge).

Okay apologies for my awful writeups on your carefully selected tracks, I am just not good with words right now since I've been writing and translating all day and it just made me fatigued as fuck

First off - when I had eight participants, I intended to divide you into four tiers and score you from 2 to 5 points, because 1 to 4 is boring :lol now with a ninth, I decided to add the top tier for the best song. And 2 to 6 points suddenly sounds boring as well, but it sounds better than 1 to 5 so THERE YOU HAVE IT.

Anyway, I just wanted to elaborate on whether or not I may be judging songs too fast or letting my mood influence them - I've been reviewing albums since 2011 and I won't say I've reached some level where I am absolutely sure of my judgment of something, BUT, since I was always paranoid about whether or not I am missing out on a grower or saying something is the most awesome thing ever and then disliking it a few days later, I have developed some sense of self-observance which allows me to estimate things quickly.

tl;dr I am totally capable of listening to nine songs as soon as most of them are submitted a few times in a row and then ranking them, it just takes a smidge more concentration, but the reason why I am totally cool with doing that is because, if you respect my time enough to submit stuff before the deadline, of course I can respect you enough to come out quickly with ratings and such. That, and the point is in enjoying myself, no one has sent me a single song I have actively disliked and I don't think any of you will :)

Onno - System Of A Down - Chic 'N' Stu #01
2 points
Pretty much the only thing I ever liked about this band was their sense of dynamics and the tone of Serj's voice and when you sent me this song I figured there might be something I missed out on about them, but they just aren't for me I guess. A small dose of them was just fine but nothing much over fine.

Ruba - Horizon - Autumn Closure
2 points
Looksie, a local melodic death metal band, super cool! Lower production values and the fact I've heard and written about way too many bands like this ultimately detract from my enjoyment, but I actually see some potential in these guys. They have already got the soaring Insomnium/Be'lakor guitar melodies down, the singer should work a bit more on his growls, adding more variety to them, and if the piano were a bit more prominent, that would help differentiate them from the pack of similar bands. Let me know where they're at in a couple of years in case I forget to follow them, will you?

ariich - Dog Fashion Disco - 100 suicides
3 points
Good fun band I could dance to, they don't strike a deep chord within me and they've lost me a bit with the trumpets but they're pretty original and fun.

YtseBitsySpider - DevilDriver - End Of The Line
3 points
*takes writeup for ariich's song, switches "dance" with "headbang" and "trumpets" with "vague modern/alternative metal overtones"* the champions' judges share their tier, ladies and gentlemen

Scorpion - Incura - Here to blame
4 points
What are these guys? Don't know. Don't care. The vocalist is awesome in particular, I want his musical babies. This is pretty simple and appealed to me a lot for a reason I can't nail down in my writing tonight, but I can in my head, maybe I will be able to tomorrow :lol

Lolzeez - CAMEL - Nimrodel/The Procession/The White Rider
4 points
9-minute-long 70's prog song. LotR themed. Well what do you know, I like it. I like the soft dreamy vibe, the vocals in the intro that actually sound like something Elvish and the solosaplenty. What's that warm keyboard thingie sound called again? I can't remember for the life of me now but I know I adore it.

Elite - In Mourning - The Poet And The Painter Of Souls
5 points
I listened to this album (and their previous) when it came out, and the reason why I didn't put it in the forbidden bands list is because I dismissed it as middle-of-the-road proggy melodeath and forgot about how these songs even sounded. Needless to say, I intend to re-visit as much from that time period as possible as it is possible that I have missed out on some growers. This song is the proof of it, it's engaging all the way through and I just loved it. Nice job for the band on the lyrics too.

Mystery participant - Avantasia - The Wicked Symphony
5 points
Again, the reasons why I haven't listened to Avantasia much is because I am not too keen on the concept of rock opera, nor on Tobias' voice, nor on most symphonic-ish power metal. So the intro didn't grab me much. Nor the aforementioned gentleman's vocal contributions. But the verses and transitions were just so awesome and having two of the finest vocals in today's metal, and so well utilized, left me quite stunned, I did not expect this. HATS OFF AVANTASIA.

Dr. DTVT - Evergrey - Recreation Day

I just knew this round someone would send me something from one of those big bands I haven't even tested out a single song from. Mason hit an arrow to the center of my tastes. Well, actually, no, he fired a cannon and swept away the surface of the field. It's just got a lot of the elements I used to like on the start of my musical journey and a lot of the things I like now, and that is really enough. I suppose his move wasn't very risky but it was smart. Well done.

I forgot what my next round was but it is in the OP :D you have until Friday, and I am going to bed. Good luck! You were great!

 :lol
I'd encourage everyone to actually risk a bit and, if not, just try to go for emotional songs (or you can do both). I mean, anyone who knows me even a little would tell you sending me something like Avantasia, which I've almost always actively disliked, is a ticket to catastrophe. And Elite sent me a song by a band which I completely forgot about because of how little impression they made on me in the past. And I've scored both of these songs very high.

Do mean emotional songs in the next round, so that means guitar-driven and emotional? Or do you mean emotional songs in the next open round?

Every time you can squeeze one in, send it :)

The rounds are really as open as they can be, whenever I have themes it's just to give you a bit of guideline so you don't have to pick from your entire library. Take "guitar-driven". It can mean a great riff or a solo that makes the song or just a strong guitar presence throughout the song. I just want you guys to just send me awesome songs that have stuff I know I like in my music so this would be a lot of fun and not a chore for you to try and think really hard to fit something into a round theme.

seriously? Avanatasia and Evergrey?

...that's like saying you've never tried chocolate and then not putting chocolate on the list.
And then someone sends you chocolate.

You acknowledge Jorn being one of the best metal voices but have never checked out tobby's project?

harumph.

what's this next round?..guitar somethingorother...grumblegrumble...

Evergrey I've never tried and that is a mortal sin, I admit, but I thought, based on the ten or so songs I have heard, that I completely dislike Avantasia :lol

You'll get a hang of what I like pretty quickly :) I suppose I can bold the music I particularly adore in my OP for easier navigation. Definitely, everyone, don't just play on the fact I haven't heard a lot of the stuff I should have, I already know I should familiarize myself with some bands :) or, if you do, go for the newer/overlooked stuff and not just the classics.

Mellotron maybe?

I freakin love that song. Camel is awesome. Nice one Lolzeez.

Judging time!! Sorry for taking a day longer and for awful writeups, I am kind of short on time. I liked all your songs and I am having a kickass time with this.

Mystery Participant - Van Halen - One Way To Rock
2 points
Pretty neat, nice hard rocking tune with great guitar-playing. That's about the beginning and the end of it. I liked it.

Elite - Dagoba - Face The Colossus
2 points
Those French metallers, always weird and cool as fuck. They lost me a bit with the vocs and the symphonic-ish overtones but I dug just about everything else.

Ruba - Bruce Dickinson - Darkside Of Aquarius
3 points
Neat song! I always liked Bruce and I suppose I should really check out the rest of his solo stuff, besides the 15-ish songs I already know. He's awesome.

Lolzeez - Pat Metheny Group - Follow me
3 points
Ladies and gentlemen, Lolzeez's story for your enjoyment:
"This is the first jazz song that I remember hearing. Pretty much. 4 years old,my uncle is listening to Imaginary Day on a CD player with headphones on. That evening I woke up from sleep at 3:00AM or something. I had a nightmare about a green woman with big teeth following me and saying "Hi Onat. We haven't seen each other in a while." Yeah this may be the only dream I will always remember. Nobody was awake at all. I turned on that CD player, put on these headphones and there we go. Imaginary Day was playing.  The first track was the title track. But I skipped it cause I guess it was "too long". Next up was Follow Me. And I enjoyed the living crap out of it. Then I stayed up,listening to Follow Me for like 4 hours before my parents woke up. Yeah.. It was weird. Anyways I just felt like sharing this story with you. I was originally gonna go for some Mahavishnu track but I had a good story to tell about Follow Me. So here you go. Enjoy. Also,Pat Metheny likes doing effects with his guitar. Hope you don't mind. Holy crap I wrote too much. Ah well. Enjoy"

Dr. DTVT - Tony MacAlpine - Key To The City
4 points
There's something really universally appealing about this man's guitar style, I can't tell what it is but I dig it a lot.

YtseBitsySpider - Killswitch Engage - My Last Serenade
4 points
My friends listen to a lot of metalcore and I always just shut my brain out when they do that because I don't particularly care for it, but whenever this song comes on I enjoy it. Especially that clean-vocal part. Something about it always gets me.

Onno - Anathema - Untouchable part 1
5 points
Judging by the number of Anathema fans on DTF, I think everyone in this roulette knows this song, so I don't have to be creative with the writeup :lol the number of points speaks for itself.

ariich - Haken - Insomnia
5 points
A somewhat standard song from these gentlemen - Marco is responsible for not letting me completely miss out on them, he got me into some of their epics - but very high in quality. I'll be jumping on the Haken3 bandwagon I guess.

Scorpion - Buckethead - Hills Of Eternity
6 points
You were right, it is extremely emotional and mellow and I loved this. I always dismissed Buckethead as yet another quirky shredder, I guess I'll have to make up for that.

Well! The third round is "something lyrically good" and Marillion is off for this round, as I've in the meantime been introduced to their most awesome lyrics/songs by... a lot of people :lol If you're not a lyric-person, send me an instrumental I guess.

Don't have time to calculate points now (when I get back from the great outdoors, I promise) but I think you're all pretty close. Deadline is Wednesday and I'll make sure to judge them pretty fast so get snapping. Think about rounds in advance as well, since I intend to shorten the deadlines after this round.

Fuck yes Buckethead! You're right, Buckethead can shred, and he often does, but the rest of that album is similarly amazing, just like all of Electric Tears (which is even more stripped down, with guitars being the only instrument).

However, I find the lack of Katatonia in that list disturbing

There goes one of the bands I thought of sending in this roulette.
Don't worry, I don't think she listened to my song recommendations, so you can probably still send something by them!

funny i don't see buckethead as a shredder.....more of a quiet slow industrial noise maker. He's good and I have many of his discs but it's his slower stuff that always gets me moved....like Watching The Boats With My Dad

Schweet, performed a lot better that round! :D And you're right that Insomnia is pretty straightforward for Haken, but I want to make sure it fit the theme, and that's one of their more guitar-driven songs.

Glad the Anathema scored highly as well, that's a wonderful song!

Oh, it's a really great song so don't be afraid to send me more in that vein, it's just that I liked the others better :)

ariich - 8 points
Mystery Participant - 7 points
Elite - 7 points
Lolzeez - 7 points
YtseBitsySpider - 7 points
Onno - 7 points
Ruba - 5 points

I think my arbitrary scoring system contributed to the fact this is really close :lol hopefully it'll get better in the following rounds. Some of you, start underperforming, fast :lol

As long as you have a "must" system where the each round two songs get 2 points, two songs get 3 points, four get 2, five get 2, and one gets 6, we should eventually spread out.  It's when people are afraid to give bad scores to good songs everyone clumps up.

It's also why I've tried to get rid of scoring in my roulettes.  Live or die.

Eh, when I participate in a roulette I don't usually worry about how I'm scored as long as I'm not a bore to the person judging. So I just assume everyone's like that and give low points to good songs. The point is, DTFers know their shit but some two songs will have the bottom tier because some songs have to be in the bottom tier. That doesn't mean I hated them. Usually, when I hate something, I will openly say I did :)

I was telling you there was nothing wrong with your score system.  Given enough rounds, we should spread out.  It just happens that the people who did poorly in round 1 found their way in round 2 and vice versa.

Anyway, if I'm going to lose, better to do with style and go till the end.

If I send an instrumental, can it have spoken samples?

This round is going to be tough. Because I can't send Rush for lyrics and I have used Bruce Dickinson, I have some obscure songs in Finnish which would need translation and stuff like

"You probably lick more ass than anyone
I guess you like the taste of shit on your tongue" (Ministry - Crumbs)

, which I like, but I don't know about anybody else.

And I rarely like instrumental music and the most usual occasions; Rush, DT and Pink Floyd are out, I don't really have anything which would score more than 2 points.

I'll think about something, but my expectations are low.

I agree with the Doc. Having just run (well, co-run) a roulette where I just scored each song, it was really hard to make myself give some lower scores. Ranking it can be brutal, but makes it more fun, and like Doc says it can make more difference in the rankings.

Onno - Lamb Of God - Blood Of The Scribe
2 points
Both songs in this tier were a good listen, but a bit too standard in the context of this round and what they went up against.

Mason - The Dear Hunter – Home
2 points
Both songs in this tier were a good listen, but a bit too standard in the context of this round and what they went up against.

Mystery - Led Zeppelin - Battle For Evermore
3 points
You said you were risking it and staying away from obvious bands that I need to listen to, but I think Led Zeppelin is quite obvious and something I need to listen to :D I never liked them a whole lot – was always a Deep Purple/Rainbow/Black Sabbath kinda gal, but I want to remedy that. This song was better than the “greatest hits” of theirs and would have likely scored higher a round or two ago but here it was overshadowed by some others.

Lolzeez – Frank Zappa – Peaches En Regalia
3 points
Same as Mystery’s song, overshadowed. Lolz was the only person to send me an instrumental instead and I quite liked this – would like to hear an album full of this.

YtseBitsySpider - Shadrane - Lantern's Dance
4 points
Melodic rock-ish prog with a Jorn-ish singer. Pretty darn interesting and well done, even if I’ve heard many bands in the similar vein. Concept album, you say? This should be looked into…

Elite - Spock’s Beard - All That’s Left
4 points
One of those bands near (or right there)-prog royalty that are on the immediate check-out list and you picked me a nice introductory song. In another round, this could have even won, but as I’ve said before this round is quite strong.

Scorp -  Devin Townsend – Nobody Here
5 points
Interesting lyrics improved by great delivery, and the mood in this song is just right. Well done Scorp.

Ruba – Nine Inch Nails - Something I Can Never Have
5 points
You’ve really hit the nail on the head here – I’ve been really into something more minimalistic and dark with the mood I had all past week and the lyrics might seem ordinary to some but they were downright painful to me as I’ve had a couple of similar situations in the near past. So, disturbing but good.

Ariich - Thrice – Daedalus
6 points
Everything scored 4 points and onwards (and even three) is the exact example of what I want to be sent in this roulette but this nailed the round theme too. The delivery is so perfect and the lyrics are perfect as well – the father/son topic is obviously something I can’t relate to as a 20-year-old girl but this set of lyrics was just… especially special. I don’t even like this genre normally! But this song is so good. What the hell. You floored me Rich.

You were great, everyone, and it's still close. The next round is open and you have until another Sunday mooooorning.

Yeah I wasn't sure if it would be your style, but personally I feel that Thrice transend the "genre" that they get lumped into. The last few albums especially are incredible mature and powerful. Glad I took the risk!

Also, WHEN DID ROUND 4 CHANGE? I had a few bands with funny/odd names lined up to choose from, and now it's just an open round? Boooooooooo!

Round 4 results! This was a tight one,

Ruba - Fall Out Boy - Our Lawyer Made Us Change the Name of This Song So We Wouldn't Get Sued
2 points
Ruba asked me if they were a major name in Serbia once upon a time. Well, they were, and I was exposed to a lot of their music - this was better than anything else I've heard of theirs but not really something I'd play for myself in my spare time.

Lolzeez - Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Sleep
2 points
It's pretty hard to judge a 23-minute post rock song objectively in a song roulette. I mean, it's a beautiful piece of music,  and I would certainly like to hear more, but I wouldn't use it for a mix CD. So there it is.

Onno - Mastodon - The Last Baron
3 points
A pretty okay song. Something about Mastodon rubs me wrong, I'm always left a bit cold to songs that people claim are their best, but they seem to handle the "epic" format better than others.

ariich - Von Hertzen Brothers - Angel's Eyes
4 points
I was supposed to see these guys with Pain Of Salvation in 2011, but, as it happens, I only get awfully sick once per year and it always coincides with that one show worth seeing here per year. I liked this song, it had some great Amorphis-y moments, so I guess those come from their common influences.

YtseBitsySpider - Sepultura - Inner Self
4 points
I don't like thrashy stuff much and I dig this. What is it with you guys making me dig stuff I don't dig? :rollin

Elite and Dr. DTVT - Ice Age - The Lhasa Road (No Surrender)
5 points
Prog. Really proggy prog. And good prog. Someone give me some info about these guys a.s.a.p because this is my song roulette and if I am too lazy to google, it is your civic duty :lol

Mystery Participant - Star One - Human See, Human Do
5 points
Quoting Mystery's email: "So, we've established that you love Russell Allen.  With Headspace on the no-no list, looks as though Damian Wilson is another vocalist you appreciate.  According to your forbidden band list, it would seem you also get moist over Dan Swano.  And as you so eloquently stated in the Nightwish thread a while back, Floor Jansen is "majestic".  All that said, how could you not possibly have Star One in your listening repertoire ?!?"

Because me and Arjen don't get along much! Everything I've checked out of his so far (yes, even THE) falls under "pretty nice, but nothing worth getting obsessed over", and since he has so many different projects going, I got discouraged from checking out everything. Needless to say, that should change, I can't be a proghead and ignore most of what Arjen did, I'm getting tired of the surprised gasps

Oh and nice song. Those Dan roars :heart :heart :heart love that man to pieces.

Scorpion - Ihsahn - On The Shores
6 points
I honestly didn't expect to like this as much as I did, but I did. I like weird/proggy black metal-based stuff, just never gave Ihsahn the time of my day. This song is pure sax (shamelessly stealing ?'s pun). Especially that second half.

Standings:
Scorpion - 21 points
ariich - 18 points
Dr. DTVT - 17 points
Elite - 16 points
YtseBitsySpider - 15 points
Mystery Participant - 15 points
Lolzeez - 12 points
Ruba - 12 points
Onno - 12 points

(I need to check my math but I think I got it all right)
I think I got almost everything for round 5 as well but I won't be able to judge in the afternoon because I'll be out of the house from about 2pm til 2am  so Saturday morning it is, if I manage to wake up well before class. Thanks for being cool and cooperative once again :hat

I love growly death vocals, but I don't like thrash, I'm not really into core, but I enjoy this an that.

You've probably noticed that this "two people send the same song" thing has severely damaged the neatness of my tier-system since I'm tier-ing songs and not people who send them, but that's perfectly okay I guess, it gives me less songs

YtseBitsySpider - Asking Alexandria - Closure
2 points
So eventually it had to happen and someone sent me a song I don't like at all. But that's just one out of 43 so you're all doing fine :)

Lolzeez - Focus - 10
3 points
*slowly sways from side to side*
*falls into deep pleasant slumber*

Ruba - Ministry - Crumbs
3 points
A year ago or so a song in the neighborhood of "industrial" would earn a big "blech" from me but you've sent me two I liked already and I've found myself some other cool stuff so I guess that's another genre to explore *tired sigh*

Ariich - Twelve Foot Ninja - Coming For You
4 points
You were right, that video is 50 types of hilarious :rollin the song is quite cool as well, I love the unforced genre changes, and the "fuck it, we CAN so why wouldn't we" attitude.

Dr. DTVT - Peter Gabriel  - Sledgehammer
4 points
Now this is just fucking A. Good job for thinking of it!

Scorpion and Onno - Diablo Swing Orchestra - A Tap Dancer's Dilemma
5 points
I think this is the tenth time that I think "holy fuck why was I putting off listening to this band" in this roulette.

Mystery - Frost* - Toys
5 points
You could have easily used this for the lyric-round! And for the upcoming round as well because that dude's voice is like vanilla and not in the metaphorical, "vanilla = safe and unexciting" sense.

Elite - Moonloop - Strombus
6 points
DSO or Frost* had the chance to win the round as well, but this is the first band in this roulette I haven't even heard of, and it's relatively recent, and it kicks as much ass as these accomplished bands already so I just had to award the other Rich all six points. This song is so good I can almost see the rest of the album being relatively unexciting :-\ tell me it ain't so.

The next round is about vocalists, and just so I could avoid 7 people sending me Ayreon, no Arjen please :lol Just send me someone who's really amazing and who's not on my forbidden bands list. You can get creative with it and you've got until Saturday evening. Good luck!

ariich - 22 points

Dr. DTVT - 21 points
Mystery Participant - 20 points
Onno - 17 points
YtseBitsySpider - 17 points
Lolzeez - 15 points
Ruba - 15 points

I know (or hope!) this is not about winning, but Scorp's riding you guys pretty hard at the moment :lol the last round will have doubled points (and no wagering, since everyone wagers their full points except me it seems) so it's all open so far.

Also, I've always been in a hurry these past few weeks, so I never get a chance to respond to all the stuff you're writing with your submissions, but I really really appreciate it that you take your time to write something alongside your submissions, music's worth something more for me when it comes with stories and you all gave me some cool stuff to read about songs/artists you sent.

Alrighty then, since no one objected, here's what I've come up with.
I received one 26 minute song and three 9+ minute songs to judge today and... it was pretty fun, actually! Results:

Lolzeez -  Genesis – Supper’s Ready
6.5 points
I'll probably be scorned for saying this but it sounds like what you'd expect unhinged 70's prog musicians would sound like - just working out their boredom of popular music without a lot of pre-meditation. It got quite awesome in places but there were a lot of places if you know what I mean.

Onno - Storm Corrosion – Drag Ropes
7 points
Is having heard Storm Corrosion Of Love And Emotion but not Storm Corrosion itself a mortal sin? :lol I guess I never cared enough to check it out. It was okay, got pretty awesome in the last three or four minutes.

Ariich – After Forever – Cry With A Smile
7.5 points
You don't have to write such a lengthy introduction to Floor Jansen, I adore her already :D what kind of bugs me about After Forever songs that I've heard so far is that Floor is by far the best thing in their music. But hey they're better than Nightwish from what I could work out.

Elite – Jeff Buckley – Vancouver
8 points
Shit dude this is beautiful. More of that, any day.

Dr. DTVT - IQ – Life Support
8 points
Mason wins email writeup of the round: "since you like KM I know you appriciate keys"
LOGICAL LINE OF THINKING.
Anyway, quite a neat little prog song and my 805th "I should investigate further".

Ruba - Animal Alpha – Bundy
8 points
Could have worked for the danceable round as well, such awesome shit :metal I like this woman you like.
Also, another KM reference in the email writeups: "She's the same for me than Kevin Moore for you" WHAT IS IT WITH YOU GUYS :rollin

Mystery - Mystery – Dear Someone
8.5 points
How fitting that the band's name is Mystery :lol you said this guy toured with Yes. I don't care if this is blasphemy but I like his voice better than Jon Anderson's. Well done.

Scorpion – Agalloch – Falling Snow
9 points
How surprising that Scorpion sends me a song that I totally fall for YAWN

YtseBitsySpider - Theocracy – Laying The Demon To Rest
9 points
This, however, is new. You are right, I have been slightly avoiding this band because of the Christian lyrics... I don't have anything against religious lyrics, in theory, but if I know outright I won't be able to relate, a band goes down a bit on my check-out list. I wouldn't be surprised if this were their best song, it has the "best song a band has done" vibe. Seriously if you're reading this thread and don't mind metal check this stuff out.

Fuck I always forget points.

*scrolls back into the abyss*

Scorpion - 34.5 points
Elite - 30 points
ariich - 29.5 points
Dr. DTVT - 29 points
Mystery Participant - 28.5 points
YtseBitsySpider - 28 points
Onno - 24 points
Ruba - 23 points
Lolzeez - 21.5 points

I always do this judging thing way too late at night so I'll have to go back and check my math before the final round. WHICH IS:
Free round! Send me under 20 minutes of music, consisting of as many or as few songs as you would like to cram in there. You can go a few seconds/minutes over I guess since I'm not a strict person. I'll calculate the average and double the points because yay double points.

And to make this more interesting, you have 48 hours instead of the usual 72. Good luck.

I could have written something along the lines of 'Jeff Buckley is my Kevin Moore' too :lol
The man used to be a HUGE inspiration to me by his guitar playing, songwriting and his singing, which is fucking awesome, as you have found out too :)

For this last round, I'll compile you a nice list tomorrow. I'm very tired now, so sleep has my priority.

For some reason this reminds me of the lovely archery olympic competitions. I must really go to bed

That last round makes it real easy to pin down the Mystery participant because there are probably only four people on DTF who are even aware of the band Mystery, despite my addition of them to my list.  It's not me, so leaves three other people.

Nah, looks like this roulette has been really cool, I would've been glad to participate if Milena didn't already know so many of the bands I like :)

I have all the scores and a couple of versions of my relatively lengthy writeup ready, except for the fact I misplaced Spider's PM (I think it happened to me once per every person who sent me PMs instead of emails :lol). And I even remember one of his songs from when I read the PM, but I don't remember the other one :D so whenever he reappears and re-sends, this is all over.

Shit, I am sad.

Results time!

Lolzeez
Genesis block
Dancing with the Moonlit Knight 8/10
I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) 8/10
Firth of Fifth 8/10
8 x 2 = 16
Liked these way more than the first Genesis song you sent me, nice job there.

Ariich
Moon Safari – A Kid Called Panic 8/10
Moon Safari – The World’s Best Dreamers 8/10
8 x 2 = 16
Pretty sweet and uplifting stuff, and they sure know how to close a song, which is something I like in a band.

Ruba
Death – Crystal Mountain 9/10
Djerv – Only I Exist 7/10
(9+7)/2 = 8
8 x 2 = 16
Ruba sent me a death metal classic and another song of his favorite singer and they were cool beans most of the time :)

Mystery Participant
darkology – violent vertigo 7/10
beyond twilight – perfect dark 7/10
Savatage - Christmas Eve / Sarajevo 12-24 7/10
Tesla - Edison's medicine 8.5/10
(7+7+7+8.5)/4 = 7.375
7.375 x 2 = 14.75
The first three songs were somehow ordinary (with the exclusion of EXCEPTIONAL vocals by Jorn and Kelly - whoever you are, you know my vocalists) but good, and the Tesla song really hit the jackpot. Nice work.

Dr. DTVT
Fair To Midland block
Dance of the Manatee – 8/10
Vice/Versa – 8/10
Whiskey and Ritalin – 8/10
A Loophole In Limbo – 9/10
Rikki Tikki Tava – 7/10
(8+8+8+9+7)/5 = 8
8 x 2 = 16
Fair To Midland is one of those bands some of my friends have always poked me to check out, and I have to say, my first impression, based on the very few songs I've heard of theirs, they sound like Coheed & Cambria would sound if they were awesome (sorry Nick, if you're reading this :lol). Very good.

Elite
DARKWATER - Again 8.5/10
8.5 x 2 = 17
Elite sent me one, Swedish melodic prog metal song. The dude knows I love my Wolverine and Seventh Wonder and Nightingale and what have you. Or just guesses pretty good These guys are excellent.

YtseBitsySpider
Bullet For My Valentine – The End 6/10
Anthrax - In The End 8/10
7 x 2 = 14
One relatively okay but unremarkable BFMV song and a well-structured Anthrax song off their last album which I dug. Appropriate names for the final round, also :D

Onno
Jurojin - The Winter 8/10
Karnivool - All I Know 8.5/10
Flying Colors – Blue Ocean 8/10
Motorhead – Going To Brazil 7/10
(8+8.5+8+7)/4 = 7.875
7.875 x 2 = 15.75
So, another band in this roulette I haven't previously heard of (Jurojin), the only Flying Colors song I actually remember off their album, and wow Karnivool sounds good, they remind me of someone. Great round, loved it.

Scorp
Ensiferum  - Token Of Time 8/10
Ozric Tentacles – Snakepit  7/10
The Cat Empire – Fishies 8.5/10
Devin Townsend – Deep Peace 9/10
(8+7+8.5+9)/4 = 8.125
8.125 x 2 = 16.25
The short psychodelic song was just okay but then that awesome song you got in your roulette really hit the jackpot and I have to say the Devin song you sent me is my favorite DT song yet. Great work as always Scorp.

The final standings:
Scorpion - 50.75 points
Elite - 47 points
ariich - 45.5 points
Dr. DTVT - 45 points
Mystery Participant - 43.25 points
YtseBitsySpider - 42 points
Onno - 39.75 points
Ruba - 39 points
Lolzeez - 37.5 points

And, to make the final statement - this roulette has finally tipped me over the edge in regards to checking out some long overdue bands, so if I run another one without having these bands in the updated forbidden list, you have every right to round-kick me:

Evergrey
In Mourning
Incura
Bruce Dickinson (seriously I'm an idiot)
Haken
Anathema
Devin Townsend (although I've gotten a little farther with him during the course of this roulette)
Von Hertzen Brothers
Star One
Ihsahn
Diablo Swing Orchestra
Frost*
Moonloop
After Forever
Theocracy
Agalloch
IQ
Jeff Buckley
Death (seriously I'm an idiot)
Darkwater

And probably, I will in the very least youtube the albums which contained all the other songs I've liked.

Thanks for participating. You were great. :heart see all of you on some other GMD battlegrounds.
