Title: Heretic's Song Roulette v. A STUNNING CONCLUSION
Post by: Heretic on January 30, 2013, 08:31:53 PM
Welcome, one and all to my very own first song roulette! In these trials, you will be tested to the limit! There will be 8 rounds and one finalists round where the two with the most points will go head to head to determine a winner! The points will be on a scale of 1 to 5. Late submissions will be deducted a point for each day they are late, so if you are five days late, there's really no point in submitting anything at all!

Joining us in this monumental occasion are the wonderful:

WindMaster
LieLowTheWantedMan
Zantera
crazyaga
Elite
Lolzeez
kari
Scorpion
MoraWintersoul

These brilliant folks have been selected to be put up to the test of determining who can appease my music tastes to the extreme. However, I've listened to a decent bit of music, so in this roulette I want only new things I haven't heard before. Here's what's off limits!

And also, just so you aren't alluded into thinking you've got this next round and then send a song that doesn't particularly adhere to my tastes, here are things I don't particularly like. I'm being pretty broad in some of these categories:

Ayreon and related music
Devin Townsend and related music (save for Ziltoid and Ocean Machine)
Pain of Salvation
Swans
The Rolling Stones
mainstream hard rock bands
classic rock
"by the numbers" prog metal
rap/hip-hop
punk
"untasteful metalcore" (Asking Alexandria-type bands)
poppy singer-songwriter-esque music

And these here: https://www.sputnikmusic.com/uservote.php?memberid=546880 are my sputnikmusic ratings if you'd like to see what kind of music I rate highly!

So yes, that's basically it. I've got all the rounds planned out and am ready to go but revealing them all now wouldn't be half as fun, so those will be revealed as we go along. However, for this first round, the theme is....

ROUND ONE - OPEN

Send me literally anything! My only preference is that it doesn't go on for too long a la 20 or 30 minutes-- those songs, while amazing at times, can't be fairly judged against say, a three minute song, so y'know. In any case, send me what you think I'll enjoy, that's the only real rule!

The deadline is Saturday at 11:59 PM EST. That gives us three days to get songs submitted-- if this ends up not being enough time, we'll change the standards a bit, as I understand how hard it is. I barely have time for the internet, constantly painting and writing papers and trying to have time with friends and all. I will do my best to post the results to the individual rounds the day after the deadline, so we'll hold each other to that standard: if you submit your songs on time, I'll post my results in time! BUT YES, bring out the guns, gentlemen, ladies, and variations thereupon!

Well, I've only listened to Effloresce one time. I've listened to Frames a lot, but otherwise I'm not SUPER familiar with everything they've made. Plus, they've made EPs and stuff that I have no idea about. The bands I listened are bands whose discography I've heard basically all of numerous times!

YES!!! Anyways,do you like Post Rock/Metal?

Of course I do, check my bands I like list!
Not-Elite is not allowed in? :(

Fine, he can send a song. :P

Okay, so basically if you're not 100% familiar with it, and it's not on the list it's ok?
I didn't have anything in particular in mind for sending, but was just curious.

Will send something soon.

Sero please feel free to start your Anathema top 25. I'll finish mine later. I had no time (and still don't really) but doing this roulette will be easier I think. So yeah, go ahead and do yours, I don't mind.

I'm attempting to give every song two or three good listens in order to be able to judge better. Didn't think there was anything wrong with that.

Well, some songs are growers. I just think it's fairer if you listen to every song equally. Then again, my submissions are usually on the late side. Do whatever you want, I'm probably not going to win this one anyway.

I used to be very confident about my songsending, but after a while I felt like the feedback became worse and worse, I guess it depends a lot on who's running the roulette. I have high hopes for this roulette, but I expect to get shot down once or twice at least.  :lol

Not really! I've found that I score better in roulettes where people will start listening to songs once everyone has sent than in roulettes where the host starts listening to individual songs the moments he gets them. This is probably related to me usually sending in late.

Well, you and I have a really similar music taste (except you like Swans (this jest will never get old)) so I think you'll probably do awesome if you stick to what you know I enjoy!

While I would agree that songs do grow, they take more than a few days for me. I didn't like Porcupine Tree for months, almost a year even. Now they're one of my favorite bands. I can almost guarantee you that if I like or don't like a song here in this roulette, that one or two more listens won't entirely change that. So I wouldn't worry at all, you'll probably do great.

However, I AM waiting on your song, though :lol

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand results!

Round 1 - Open

Zantera
Cloud Nothings - Wasted Days

Well, sadly I've actually heard this album before (and didn't really like a lot of it.) However, this song is the exception, I like a lot of what goes on in it (the second half especially.) Don't really like the guys' vocals, though, which really drag the song down for me. Sadly, I do think I would love this song a whole lot more if it was entirely instrumental and didn't have the indie-rock-ish first half. Still, it was good enough. After hearing you and Ryan rave about it, though, I was expecting something brilliant, however!

3/5

---

Kari
Jesus and Mary Chain - Just Like Honey

Not a bad song. Has sort of that 80's sound (because it's from the 80's I'm assuming) that I don't particularly enjoy, but the vocals and the melodies are still really good. I thought the repetition of the title near the end was a bit cheesy, too, but eh. For the most part the song just doesn't reach a pinnacle of "awesome" that really engages me. It just kind of drifts along. Not bad though. Enjoyable song!

3/5

---

crazyaga
DJ Shadow - Changeling - Transmission 1

Well, I guess I was lying when I said I didn't like /any/ hip-hop. I've actually listened to most of this album and enjoyed it, seeing as it's not your typical hip-hop or rap, y'know. It's a very different kind of instrumental music and it's fairly engaging as well. I could definitely see myself listening to more experimental stuff like this (not constantly but on whims and whatnot) so I definitely think this was a great first submission! Cool!

3.5/5

---

Scorpion
Diablo Swing Orchestra - A Tap Dancer's Dilemma

Ah, the Diablo Swing Orchestra. I've heard a bit of these guys and have always somewhat enjoyed what I heard. This was good-- but it was lacking a little something, not sure what, but something to push it to another level. Still good stuff though. I love the craziness of the song in parts, whereas other parts felt somewhat forced, maybe? Still need to check out some of their other stuff though, so good submission!

3.5/5

---

Elite
The River Empires - A Toast to the Snake King

AWESOME SONG. I've heard a few TRE songs and I've always liked what I've heard, but I really liked this. The vocals were good, the guitar was very folk-y, and the piano at the end was sweet. I really need to hear the full album now, so kudos for the bandcamp link. I've heard one of their newest songs and it was really sweet. Great stuff!

(Also, I forgot to score Non-Elite's song and I can't be bothered to do that right now because SLEEP. Will get around to that :lol)

4/5

---

LieLow
Animal Collective - In the Flowers

This track is really dreamy. I really love indie-type music like this, and this was no exception. The entire atmosphere of the song is just kind of "drifting" and I really like the vocals. I've always been interested in this band but didn't know where to start. Perhaps now I'll check out one of their albums. Very good stuff!

4/5

---

MoraWintersoul
Amorphis - Sampo

Dang, I really liked this. The heavy bit at the end was really good, and the atmosphere throughout the song was great. Then there's the electronic keyboard solo, which...kind of doesn't fit, haha. The beginning half was by far my favorite, however, as the vocals were cool. Overall a good song, will definitely look more into their stuff.

4/5

---

WindMaster
*shels - Butterflies On Luci's Way

Now, I've actually heard this album in it's entirety, but it was almost a year ago, so this was still very impressive. I remember really liking "Journey to the Plains" a lot too. Lovely atmosphere and the post-rock + vocals combo really does work here. Awesome!

4/5

---

Lolzeez
Cult of Luna - I, the Weapon

Well, here it is. I love post-metal, and this was no exception. I've been meaning to listen to this album and this just gives me more reason. Absolutely crushing atmosphere the entire time, and the harsh vocals are really good. Great stuff that really excites me to hear the rest. It really reminded me of Rosetta, too, who have risen near my top ten bands--maybe a little bit of Amia Venera Landscape as well.
Awesome!

Zantera - 3

Well, this was a good round, folks! Definitely a lot of stellar songs, but nothing that truly blew me away, i.e. a 5/5. Hoping for that in the next round which is...

ROUND TWO - LIGHT!

Here's the deal-- I want you to send me a song which you would describe as "light." Now this could mean light in tone, atmosphere, instrumentation, vocals, layering, anything! Something ethereal. Something that evokes the feeling of "light." I trust you to take this in any direction possible-- if you think light is crazy harsh vocals on top of a floating, uplifting atmosphere than so be it! IN ANY CASE, I look for the songs for this round to be due on Wednesday Feb 6th at 11:59 EST. Once again, if this isn't enough time we can work something out, but the three days worked perfectly for this round, I think. Gave me ample time to listen to the songs and gave you good enough time to think about them. However, if you have any suggestions, throw em' at me! I'm open to whatever.

Either way, good luck for the next round and I look forward to some amazing tracks!

Round 2 - Light

---

MoraWintersoul
Riverside - Concieving You

I've listened to some Riverside and while I think they've got some really cool moments at times (one of the songs on their new album was really good, a piano ballad, idk which though) they've yet to knock the ball out of the park for me. This was pretty decent, but kind of just felt like a by-the-numbers prog ballad. I also didn't quite feel like the song was "light" in tone, more saddening really. Still, it was alright.

2.5/5

---

Lolzeez
Genesis - Fading Lights

Well, I'll just start off saying I never really dug Genesis because of the vocals. This might be complete heresy to some people (that fits for me right?) but they were pretty good here. The biggest downside to this song is the length, bro! While the song is actually pretty dang good during certain sections, it just kind of... drags on after a while. While the song was certainly light in tone, it was not quality enough to hold all ten minutes, I think.

3/5

---

WindMaster
The Old Ceremony - Tender Age

This was a fun song, nothing really amazing but still very "light" in mood and made for some easy listening. I like the guy's vocals and would like to see more use of instrumentation along with them. The song also felt like it was begging for a climax, but never got to one, unfortunately. A bridge or a section where the guys just jam on their instruments would have improved this a lot. Either way, a good, entertaining song.

3.5/5

---

Scorpion
Extreme - Play With Me

Haha, I can't stand most of this "hair metal" style music but I won't deny this was hilarious, which really increased my enjoyment of the song. While I normally would give this bad marks for the type of song it is, I actually enjoyed it because it was so silly. The guitar work was also good, which is often true of this style-music. Definitely light if you interpret that meaning to be playful. Good call!

3.5/5

---

LieLow
The Cure - Plainsong

First off: congratulations for getting me to enjoy a band I've never been interested in. This song was actually pretty dang good, as opposed to what I've thought of some of the other songs I've heard by the Cure. I loved the instrumentation mainly, and the vocal effects are pretty cool too. The song was definitely "light" and fit your description perfectly (beckoning light and overlooking a cliff on the sea.) Great stuff!

4/5

---

Elite
Eisley - Mr. Moon

I've heard so much about Eisley and never really listened to them. A great introduction song though, wow. The vocals are so good, and as I've slowly been getting into female vocals, this really fit. The melodies are really good, the lyrics aren't half bad, and I think it fits the "light" description pretty well. Awesome song!

4/5

---

crazyaga
Helios - Bless This Morning Year

When you sent this, you said "I hope you like ambient music," which sort of surprised me, I thought you /sort of/ knew my tastes pretty good. Anyways, this song was really good. Reminded me of Kashiwa Daisuke in terms of atmosphere, and the album cover is very close to how the song makes you feel. On that note, this song begins with a feeling that's totally opposite of "light' but sort of progresses towards the sound I imagine light to be. It doesn't quite get there, though. It's a beautiful song, however. Just gorgeous really, I'll have to listen to a full album by these guys. Great!

4/5

---

Zantera
North Atlantic Oscillation - Soft Coda

While I listened to this album once last year, I haven't listened since, so this still felt fresh to me. I love the vocals during the chorus. The verses are good, too, but that chorus makes the song, really. Almost feels like an Anathema chorus. The song is fits the "light" requirement to a T and is definitely a fantastic song. Good job, sir.

4.5/5

---

kari
Vampire Weekend - Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa

This song was so much fun! I've heard of Vampire Weekend but never really considered listening to them. This song definitely changes that. That indie feeling I really love is persistent throughout this song and the song is just unnatural in how it plays out. It's definitely "light" in how playful and easy it is, and it definitely makes for a great listen! Fantastic.

4.5/5

STANDINGS:

kari - 7.5
crazyaga - 7.5
Zantera - 7.5
WindMaster - 7.5
Lolzeez - 7.5

MoraWintersoul - 6.5

Haha, so many 7.5's. This roulette is super-close thus far! Anyone could pull ahead at any time. Unfortunately nobody has sent me a 5'er yet. On the plus side, there's been no 1's or 1.5's (or even a 2!) either. I'm really hoping this next round will get everyone to pull out their big guns. Check the list! See what gets me goin'. Because for this next round we shall be playing with...

ROUND THREE - DARK

So unexpected, right? The opposite of last round-- this time, hit me with something that's incredibly dark. Whether this is in tone, mood, atmosphere, lyrics-- it doesn't matter, you could send me doom metal or send me a folk song, just give me music that is chilling or heartbreaking, frightening or intense. I have high hopes for this round in terms of who you guys are-- I know you can pull out something that will truly impress me. Songs for this round will be due on Wednesday, February 13th, 11:59 EST. This gives you a bit more time than I have been handing out, but that's in part of me being super-busy with soccer and college homework and not being able to get around to this.

But anyways, great round! Looking forward to what's next.

WOAH!!! CONCEIVING YOU IS ONLY 2.5/5?!?!?!? DAMN YOU!!!!! Though yeah,I understand why you can dislike Phil's vocals. (But not Gabriel cause he's Lord Karnage the 3rd...)

Anyways,I might have a good song for this. Prepare for comeback!

Hmm well that really was a longshot then, eh? Still, awesome pick.

Keep em' coming guys!

Also, question: is eight rounds the maximum for a roulette or is that kind of an unspoken rule? Because I had a really cool idea for a round but don't want to omit any of my other established rounds, so what's the rule on that?

Yeah I don't think the amount of rounds matters as long as you keep up a good pace. People tend to get more frustrated when it seems to be going forever without any results.

Well, we're still missing LieLow's submission, but the deadline's passed. Oh well.

Round 3 - Dark

crazyaga
Coil - Heaven's Blade

Okay I'm going to risk being completely honest here. Unfortunately, I thought this song was absolutely terrible. The lyrics are certainly dark, but they're awkwardly delivered with vocals that have no melody or timbre to them whatsoever, behind music that is neither interesting or dark sounding, really. It was literally hard to sit through this entire thing. I cannot find really one redeemable thing about this song, other than the lyrics fitting the theme I threw out there. While this certainly shows "experimentation" to it's nth degree, I think it lost it's enjoyability taking it so far. Better luck next time?

1.5/5

---

Zantera
Dir en Grey - The Blossoming Beelzebub

Hmm. The famed "Derp and Gay", haha. Never really listened to these guys before this and nothing in this song really made me  want to listen to any other songs. Once again, being entirely honest, I could not stand this guys' vocals at the beginning of the song, and nothing further made me like them any more-- the harsh vocals were actually much more interesting and listenable than the clean ones, really. The instrumentation improved significantly during the middle of the song and I think things picked up after four minutes or so. There's certainly some redeemable qualities to this one, and it really is pretty "dark," so it passes in that regard. However, it didn't impress me at all, really, which I was hoping it would. Ah well.

2/5

---

Elite
Mechanical Poet - Stormchild

The band that made me lose the final round of the DTF Champions Roulette? Nope, no way, no how. You lose as well.

0/5

...

But seriously. This song kind of felt like Symphony X in a lot of regards. The vocals and the instruments mainly, but the theme kind of suits that feel too. However, my feelings towards this kind of music have lessened dramatically in the past few months, so I enjoyed this a lot less than I would have before. Still though, it was a catchy, fast-paced song that /kind-of/ felt dark, I guess. The guitar solo was nice! Overall not a bad song, but I'll never see how these guys beat the MIGHTY KVELERTAK...

3/5

---

Lolzeez
Riverside - Loose Heart

Hm, more riverside? I mean, this wasn't a terrible song, but I was sent these guys last round plus I mentioned I don't really love them. Perhaps a bad move? Anyways, this song is pretty good, I like the guitar especially, but something about it just leaves me cold. It really didn't engage a "dark" feeling other than perhaps the lyrics. I also wasn't a huge fan of the vocals here. Still, not bad, but nothing spectacular. I liked the ending the best, not because it was over dfsjdkl, but because it got heavy and actually kind-of dark.

3/5

---

Scorpion
Green Carnation - Pile of Doubt

Well, you mentioned wanting to send "Light of Day, Day of Darkness", but I've actually listened to that entire album/song! It was fantastic, too, really enjoyed it the last time I listened to it. This song was great as well. I've never really considered checking out their back catalog as the previously mentioned album/song is usually canonized as their best work. However, this song indicates that they actually have some other good material! While I wasn't too fond of the vocals at the start, they progressed quite well, and the instrumentation was very cool. I enjoyed the melody and the repetition of the songs' main theme. Overall a pretty good song!

3.5/5

---

MoraWintersoul
Green Carnation - The Burden is Mine...Alone

Heh, you and Scorpion sent the same artist. These guys must really have some dark stuff, eh? Well, since this round has been about me being brutally honest, I'll be honest again: this song is awesome. I definitely enjoyed it a bit more than Scorpion's, and the instrumentation and the vocals were even better on this song. The song was somewhat sad and definitely dark. The song is very self-deprecating and it really conveys a sense of emptiness. However, even in that regard it is a beautiful song. the guitar melody is gorgeous, and the vocals suit the song very well. The song is simple and to the point without getting caught up in some other sort of experimentation or change, which helps convey the atmosphere I assume they were striving towards. Sweet!

4/5

---

WindMaster
Enslaved - Materal

Welllp, I've actually heard this album in it's entirety (check the sputnik ratings for future reference, I would say, I'm not familiar with all of their stuff so I didn't put this on the list, but y'know) Either way, I think Ne Obliviscaris does the whole prog metal + black metal combo a lot better than these guys-- I just don't feel anything when I listen to the clean vocals, mainly at the beginning. I prefer the heavier vocals by far and would probably enjoy this band a lot more if they'd stick to them. In any case, I didn't think this song was that "dark" during the actual melodic sections, but I definitely felt it in the heavier sections. The song definitely improved around halfway through the song, the melodic vocals too! The guitars pick up and the song finally sort of establishes itself. The solo is good, too! By the end I feel like I've listened to a substantially good song, though, so I think the destination is well worth the journey. Awesome.

4/5

---

Kari
The Antlers - Bear

I've always considered checking these guys out further. I heard their most recent EP and enjoyed it a lot. I've been told Hospice is one of the saddest albums ever and this song shows that certainly. The lyrics are definitely dark and depressing, and the song leaves me feeling really empty...in a good way, though. The melody behind the song is sort of the opposite of dark, but the meaning behind the song certainly fits the theme. The vocals were really good and emotional, and overall this was a really good song, but from what I've heard about this album I'm sure you could have found something more depressing/dark? Either way, nice!

4/5

---

Well, then. I'd say this was the most disappointing round thus far-- especially seeing as LieLow didn't get anything in either. I really thought you guys would have some excellent music in the "dark" category but that didn't really work out, sadly. When I think of "dark" songs, I think of "Mad World," by Gary Jules. "Jack Nicholson" by the Mayan Factor. "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails. "Fiction" by Avenged Sevenfold. " Any song by Godspeed You! Black Emperor. "One Last Goodbye" by Anathema. "Handcuffs" by Brand New.

These are all songs that evoke really dark imagery, lost, lonely intrinsic pain, or even sadistic/psychosomatic indications at times. Things that convey emptiness and self-doubt, weariness and loneliness. None of these songs really struck an emotional chord with me, nor did they invoke an utter sense of severe darkness entirely. Some songs came close, others had inklings of it, others had darkness interspersed with poppy melodies. However, I realize we all have our own perception of darkness and so if it didn't quite reach that atmosphere I refrained from taking off points--the real thing here is that I just didn't enjoy some of the songs as a whole, which I guess is the real goal of the roulette. I feel terrible giving out bad scores, because you guys are all awesome and I love you. But this round disappointed me as a whole. I think next round might pick things back up a bit, though. Anyways:

RANKINGS:

kari - 11.5
WindMaster - 11.5
Elite - 11
Lolzeez - 10.5
Scorpion - 10.5
MoraWintersoul - 10.5
Zantera - 9.5
crazyaga - 9
LieLow - 8

however... onto...

ROUND FOUR - SEASONS

For this round, I want you to send me a song that sounds like a particular season of the year. Something that evokes Spring, Summer, Autumn, or Winter. Sometimes this is entirely up to the listener's opinion, though, so here's the catch. I will judge all of the songs based on song quality only. However, if you send me a season to match with the song, and I think it definitely sounds like that season, then I will give you between 1 and 3 extra points. You can choose how many to wager, 1, 2, 3, or none! If I find that the song does not match my viewpoints on the sounds of that season, then the wagered points will be deducted from the overall score. So, basically, it's how confident you are the song sounds like the season you're putting out there. I thought this would be an extra bit of fun and way for someone who's gotten behind to potentially catch up. If you submit a 5/5 song and wager three points and fire on all cylinders, then bam! 8 points, right there. So give me something that you think evokes a particular season. And be sure about it!

This round will TENTATIVELY be due on Wednesday, February 20th at 11:59 EST. That's a kind-of-longer wait than usual, but I'm liking the Wednesday deadlines, they fit my college schedule a bit well since we don't get assigned our heavy drawing homework assignments until Friday. However, if everyone submits their song like, three days before the deadline, then I'll post results then. So, tentative deadline that is subject to change based on you guys. Enjoy!

Glad you liked it. There are definitely darker parts but I think Bear is the best song and captures the overall feel of the album beautfully. There was a lot of darker stuff I could have sent you but after all it is about you discovering new music and I thought the darkness/awesome-new-music-for-you-ratio was best here. :)

Ah dude if you were sick then I'll let it slide. Send em' both!

@Jimmy, not necessarily, the songs that won this round weren't! The key thing to impressing me is awesome soaring vocals or amazing melodies in terms of lighter songs and crushing vocals and crazy riffs for heavier stuff.

You're supposed to wager 1 to 3 points if you think it sounds like the season you submitted or none at all. If you don't wager any it will just be scored like it would usually.

Round Three -- Late Result --

LieLow
Chiasm - Still

Yikes. This is dark done exactly how it should be. It was literally almost creepy in its tone and atmosphere, and the vocals were really really haunting. The song itself was pretty great too, but seriously, chills came from this song. It really kept me wondering what was going to happen, yet nothing dramatic ever came from it. It was just eerie. But that was the theme, so awesome job!

4/5

---

Round Four

MoraWintersoul
Amesoeurs - Heurt

Well, this song definitely felt pretty autumn-y, so you win the bonus points! However, it didn't really excite me that much as a song. While it was good in general, nothing really popped out and made me go WOAAAH. However, I really liked the instrumentation. The vocals didn't really stand out to me as being that great, but like I said, the atmosphere was sweet, and the instrumentation was great!

3.5/5 + 2 = 5.5

Harmonium - Depuis L'automne Paroles (Words Since Fall)

Sweet stuff! This song had some really beautiful parts to it and it kept me interested for the most part. There were a few sections that didn't really make me think I liked the song, but some of the other sections really brought it up. Overall it really did feel like fall and I thought that while things could have certainly been improved, it was a really cool song. Yessir.

3.5/5 + 2 = 5.5

Zantera
Gregor Samsa - Even Numbers

I think the biggest thing that hurt this song was that I've heard it previously. Otherwise, I loved it. The melancholic sections, the beautiful vocals, the post-rock atmosphere... you weren't lying when you said you were going to send more post-rock I see! Haha, still, this song was really good, and it felt very winter-y in its atmosphere and tone. Unfortunately you only wagered 2 points-- I think this deserved 3. Either way, good stuff. Way to go!

4/5 + 2 = 6

crazyaga
Talk Talk - AFTER THE FLOOD

This song was really cool! I didn't love the vocals, but the rest of the song was quite interesting. I can definitely see why these guys are heralded with innovating the post-rock sound, too! This atmosphere was really cool and while I wouldn't immediately guess spring as the season this would represent, upon further listens I found myself agreeing. Sweet stuff, bro!

3.5/5 + 3 = 6.5

Scorpion
Sentenced - Awaiting The Winter Frost

YES. This song was so sweet! The black metal-tinged vocals behind a sort of thrash metal fused with black metal style was really cool (albeit done before) but this was still really good! There was a fantastic guitar solo that really kept me engaged and the guitar itself was awesome throughout the song. The harsh vocals were well done and the atmosphere itself was very enthralling. The song certainly felt like winter to me!

4.5/5 + 2 = 6.5

Elite
Spock's Beard - All that's left

Well now. I've heard a lot about these guys but never really thought to check them out. I really liked the vocals, which, honestly surprised me! That sort of timbre to the voice usually turns me off, but it's really good here! Awesome stuff! My favorite part was probably the "where I'm going... where I've been" section near the end. It was actually really cool. I definitely think it felt like autumn as well, so great pick dude!

4/5 + 3 = 7

kari
Múm - Green Grass of Tunnel

Oh my, this song was just gorgeous. I was mesmerized the entire time. The song was uplifting, powerful, and it just soared with emotion. The vocals were so soft and soothing yet full of force, and the song kept me engaged throughout the entire thing! The soundscapes created by this song are just awesome, and I'm really glad you sent this to me. Icelandic bands really do have something special, and this shows it. The text file you sent me was corrupted but I believe it said the season was spring and the points wagered were three? If not, then I don't really care, it deserves the extra recognition. Awesome song!

4.5/ + 3 = 7.5

LieLow
The Zombies - Care of Cell 44

Oh mannnnn. THIS SONG WAS LIKE hey look we're going to sound like the Beach Boys! And they did it! BUT it still sounded original for the most part and it was a great song. It was upbeat and engaging and it was literally fun to listen to. Definitely a happy atmosphere and it definitely sounds like the artists themselves were enjoying themselves making it. To top it all off it felt like I was sitting in a beach chair sipping some exotic drink while I watched girls play beach volleyball. The summer wager was a great one, dude! Awesome song.

4.5/5 + 3 = 7.5

---

WindMaster
Oakhelm - The Way of the Bleeding Bark

Oh man oh man oh man you almost did it, WindMaster! You almost sent me a five-star song. Everything about this song was sweet-- from the atmosphere, to the riffs, to the harsh vocals, I was just enthralled. If I had one thing to say negative about this song, it was that at the end it ALMOST overstayed its welcome. But still-- it was such a powerful song, and it evoked the feeling of the before-wagered season of winter very well. The song is very climatic and I loved so much about it. So close!

4.5/5 + 3 = 7.5

Well now! This round was awesome! Sorry for the lateness of the hour-- I've had a week that was quite... well, long. And hard. And easily perceivable as a penis joke. However-- this round really showed that I picked the right people for this roulette-- I liked EVERY single song. Every song matched the season you all picked, which is awesome, too. Overall I think you guys really stepped it up this round. I mean seriously, three 4.5's? That's great. Let's make it all 5's next time, mm'kay?

Anyways, now for the fun part:

ROUND FIVE

The theme for the wonderous ROUND FIVE will be...

WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE?!

...what? That was your reaction. Tell me it wasn't. This round was kind of crazy in my head, and it seems even crazier on paper (or forum whatever don't look at me like that.) Anyways, this round will feature the three wonderful options that the contestants on that particular show are given-- that is, 50/50, Ask the Audience, and Phone a Friend! Now Adam, that doesn't make any sense! Well, here, let me lay it out for you:

50/50 - With this option you can send me two songs. Whichever one I like better will be the one I pick. However, the songs must be by the same artist, which limits it a bit and makes it a bit more challenging!

Ask the Audience - Well, I'm sort of the audience for this roulette, because I'm watching as you guys do your deeds trying to please me. That makes me sort of an audience, right? Well here's what you can do-- you can PM me with a song and literally ask me if I like it. No matter my answer, you can then send another song, or stay with the one you originally picked. It's kind of like 50/50, but with early confirmation from me whether or not I like the song. However, I will not tell you HOW much I like it, either. I will respond either yes, or no. This leaves ambiguity, making it up to you to decide whether or not you send another song. It also gives the no's another opportunity to send me a song I might enjoy.

Phone a Friend - Literally. PM another forum-goer and get them to send me a song they might think I'd enjoy. In their PM they must specifically state who they are PMing for (i.e. if MoraWintersoul asks lonestar to PM me a song, lonestar would have to say "I'm sending this song in place of Mora...") This perhaps could give someone else who may know my tastes (or who has been judging them) a chance to get you some points, too! Who knows. Also-- if the particular person doesn't go to this forum, he can e-mail a song, too! It's open to everyone. Ever.

EITHER WAY-- this round is literally all fun and games. Pick an option, do it, and have fun with it, seriously! You can send me anything, there's no theme, but make sure you do pick a Millionaire option. I've never seen something done like this (maybe it has?) but I thought it might be interesting and a way to make you guys really throw out stuff that I've never heard of and may possibly enjoy.

The due date will be Wednesday, once again, February 27th, at 11:59 EST. If this doesn't work out, like always, we can work around it.

Anyways-- awesome round last time, and good luck with this one. And let me know what you think of this idea-- it's goofy, yes... but I like it!

YAAAAAY. All That's Left is beautiful and I love it. Glad you liked it too :) It's actually kind of an oddball in Spock's Beard's discography in the sense that it's melancholic. Most of their material is very uplifting. I said this to Milena too after I sent the same song in hers; if you need a guide to get into them, I'll be there :D

Round 5

MoraWintersoul
The Gathering - The May Song

I don't normally enjoy female vocalists unless the music behind them is really indie pop-ish or something like that. I've heard about this band a fair bit, but the female vocals part was the part that turned me away. Needless to say, on the first song, I wasn't quite as interested as I was after listening to this one. The style of this song suited the vocalists' voice much better, I believe, and the melodies were more interesting. However, I didn't quite like the way she held out her notes-- odd complaint, I know, but it made the song less enjoyable in my opinion. Still, the song wasn't bad, and I liked the guitar.

3.5/5

---

Windmaster
Spirit of the Forest - Mystic Caves

While the last black metal song you sent me completely ruled, I felt like this one was just a typical folk-ish black metal song for the most part. It was good-- don't get me wrong, I just felt like it didn't quite reach the highs of other songs of its kind. It didn't really have something that made it stand out from the crowd. However, that being said, it was still a cool song. The riffs were really cool, the vocals were still pretty sweet, and the band name definitely suited the overall feeling of the song, haha. Cool.

3.5/5

---

Lolzeez
Yes - Starship Trooper

I'll be honest here-- I picked this song right from the start after seeing the length of the other one. There's a certain amount of time that eventually makes it sort of unfair to judge given that most of the other songs are in the five minute range, so, yeah... Anyways. The song! Yes. It's a Yes song, which means it's obviously pretty cool. As I will mention below (seeing as Elite also sent Yes) I really love the instruments behind these songs much more than I love the vocals. The vocals are just a bit too 70's for me at points. It's all good though-- the harmonies that are employed at various sections are quite redeeming in that regard. The song was interesting and I certainly liked it. While I don't think it reached as highly as Elite's submission, i still enjoyed it.

3.5/5

---

crazyaga
Bark Psychosis - Pendulum Man

This song was pretty cool, actually. It had a really good atmosphere and the entire time it never felt overpowering nor underwhelming really... I thought the ambiance of the song was done well, and the instrumentation is good too. I thought the last bit of it was the most interesting section, but there wasn't a ton of variation overall. A good song!

3.5/5

---

Zantera
Beach House - Other People

Alright, this is awkward. I picked this song instead of the other one (Lazuli) because... because, well, kari sent the other song. I could've rectified this, I guess, but I really just enjoyed the songs so much that I'm willing to look past it. Plus, I've judged two Yes songs this round so let's make it a trend. Anyways. I've heard a lot about these guys being dreamy... in the sense of their music. Not sure about their level of attractiveness. Not really intrigued about that either, but that's aside the point. I really liked this song. The melodies are, in fact, quite dreamy, and the vocals, while really different, are actually very cool. This song was really catchy and it really felt like a song you'd want to listen to during the summer. Overall, sweet stuff.

4/5

---

kari
Beach House - Lazuli

As I said with Zantera-- these guys really do utilize the term "dream pop" to the nth degree. The atmosphere of this song is quite drift-y, and the vocals are really cool. Just like Zantera's, the melodies rule, and the song is fairly catchy. I  definitely need to check out these guys' full length. Although, I might save that for summer. The surreal soundscapes that are still somehow upbeat and happy seem like they'd fit perfectly. Thus the name, "Beach House," I suppose. Sweet.

4/5

---

Elite
Yes - Roundabout

Well to be fair, since I've heard this before, I could have sent it back... but I didn't. Because it's such a cool song. My dad was listening to this years before I ever got into music, but I honestly have only listened to this song two or three times legitimately on my own, focused. I really love the instrumentation of course-- this song has always been known for it. The styling of the vocals, while usually not my thing, actually work really well here and I definitely enjoyed them. Overall, the song held my interest and felt like a proper jam session. Kudos!

4/5

---

Scorpion
Ihsahn - On the Shores

This ended up being the third song you sent me (and not because I disliked the second one) but this song was /easily/ the best out of the three and the one I enjoyed the most. Ihsahn's name is certainly famous-- or infamous-- and his projects are usually quite lauded. This song is no exception. The vocals are pretty good, but the real winning factor of this song is made through the use of the instruments -- ie the saxophone, the guitars, the saxophone, the drums, did I mention the saxophone? The change of tone at the four minute mark really puts the song on another level, too, a different pace, one that's even more engaging. The riffage is awesome here, and the sax continues to impress. Overall, a sweet song.

4.5/5

---

LieLow
Gospel - As Far As You Can Throw Me

Well, dang, you've done it. You just like, hit the nail on the head with this one. And the other one really, I just liked this one a tad bit more. There's something about this that isn't just hardcore-- it's like, progressive drumming, post-hardcore vocals, indie-rock riffage-- such a crazy amalmagation, but definitely one that works. The melodies that are subtly in there as well (especially around the two minute mark) are oustanding, and really just put this song on another level. The last few minutes of this song are just incredible. The slower sections that transition into that insane background riff along with the drumming...ahh. Just wonderful stuff all around. Looked this album up on Sputnik andsaw it was rated incredibly high. Definitely one to check out. Absolutely, in every single way possible, awesome.

5/5

---

STANDINGS:

LieLow - 24.5
kari - 23
WindMaster - 22.5
Elite - 22
Scorpion - 21.5
MoraWintersoul - 19.5
Lolzeez - 19.5
Zantera - 19.5
crazyaga - 19

And that concludes Round Five! LieLow stays in the lead! kari edges past WindMaster! Everyone else basically stayed in the same spot despite variations in the scoring! Awesome round, people! Nothing lower than a 3.5 and one 5! This roulette is going quite smoothly, for the most part-- I've been a tad late on my result-posting, but some of the songs were sent in late too, so we'll all just sit and quietly applaud ourselves for at least getting it done. I was really happy with the songs this round, though, definitely some albums and bands to check out! However, now it's time for...

ROUND SIX

Alright, everyone's going to start booing after I post this, but the theme of this round is...MAKE ME LIKE IT. Yep, that's right-- take a look at the list of things I posted that I /do not/ like and prove to me that there's some good inside of it. In order to not make this round a fest of 1.5's and 2's (which I hope it won't be, seeing as you guys will certainly find something awesome inside of the list of things I haven't taken to) I will judge the songs accordingly. So, while I might not hand out 5's willy nilly, I'll certainly give higher scores for things that have redeeming qualities. And, of course, if you just send me a song that proves me wrong about the whole deal, then it will be scored well too. This might take some time-- you might have to go through Swans' discography and find a song that reminds you of the bands I really like. You might have to search a million punk bands until you find one that has melody and riffage and awesomeness. So, seeing as it's a different sort of round, and I've already kind of screwed up my own time limitations, the songs for this round will be due on Friday, March 8, at 11:59 EST. And tentatively later, I dealt with that fine this round. We're all busy.

In any case, let er' rip. Bust out a country song that is actually awesome and let me have it. Work to make me like the things that I have expressed distaste in-- there's always exceptions!

MoraWintersoul
Pain Of Salvation - Lilium Cruentus (Deus Nova)

Ehhh. Pain of Salvation. Have never really cared for anything I heard by these guys, and this song didn't change my opinion that much. The use of the saxophone(?) was sweet, but those yelling/singing vocals were really, really cringeworthy. Otherwise, the song wasn't bad, persay, but it just wasn't amazing. Maybe if he sang melodic vocals throughout the song and didn't either talk or half-sing. The chorus was catchy, and the guitar was good, so overall, it's not terrible.

Lolzeez
Devin Townsend - Earth Day

I actually /have/ heard this song before. I don't remember it very well, though, but I think I remember having a lukewarm reaction. I did this time, too. The vocals were the worst part. Unnecessary emphasis on certain words and sounds combined with his signature singing style just makes for a "MEH" reaction from me. The instruments were great, but those vocals really kill a lot of the first part of the song for me. I think they worked much better when the song started to get a bit "crazier" and they began to suit the music more. The fast-paced screams were kind of cool, too. The overall psuedo-go-green lyrics of the song were kind of laughable at points, I especially was amused by him yelling "RECYCLE!" In any case, the song wasn't bad, but it didn't make me want to listen to anymore of Terria, unfortunately.

3/5

Elite
Pain of Salvation - Iter Impius

Hmm,  more PoS? Okay, we'll try it out.

Basically, my thoughts are the same for this PoS song as they were for Mora's. Alright stuff, but nothing special. The piano in the intro was awesome, and the song had good melodies, but really it's just the vocalist that kills it for me. Maybe it's better in the context of an album or something but his vocals just don't resonate with me. Still, i didn't hate it, so that's a success.

3/5

---

LieLow
Munly and the Lee Lewis Harlots - Song Rebecca Calls 'That Birdcage Song' Which Never Was Though Now Kind Of Is Because Of Her Influence

Congratulations on having the longest song name ever. Anyways, this song was such a freaking mixed bag. It was definitely interesting in the instrumentation, but the vocals were terrible. Like, honestly, this song would be AWESOME without the vocals. Or with someone else singing, maybe? Seriously, the violin, the other more subtle instruments? They're fantastic. But that guys' voice is just grating. I would listen to an instrumental band like this. Definitely a unique take on the country genre, though. And thanks to the amazing instrumentation, I can't give this less than 3.5.

3.5/5

---

Scorpion
Devin Townsend - Deep Peace

Scorpion, I had so much faith in you this round, and you send me Devin Townsend?! :lol Seriously, though. The verdict stands. This guys' vocals just are not for me. This really seems to be a theme for this round-- awesome instrumentation, terrible vocals. I guess it's harder to screw instruments up?This song really started to pick up around the four and a half minute mark, with some really good guitar work. The vocals were actually tolerable here, too, so I can definitely say it ended on a good note.

3.5/5

---

kari
Kendrick Lamar - Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe

Woo, the riskiest submission this round! Hip-hop! I can't particularly say that I loved this, but it was actually enjoyable. The beats were good, the melody that is subtly there is good, too. The singing vocals are super-whiny, though, could've gone without those, haha. The repetition of the title was kind of stupid, too, but the verses were actually engaging and interesting. Overall, not a bad song, not a particularly amazing one, but definitely  cool in several regards.

3.5/5

---

WindMaster
Catharsis - Sabbat

This song definitely started off on a strange note. The sort of chanting/chamber choir thing always makes for an interesting introduction to a song. It definitely worked here. I myself wouldn't have ever called this "punk" but I can certainly see traces of it in the guitar riffs. The vocals are really heavy and the melodies are good. The drumming was actually my favorite part, such talent. The reprise of the choir section was a good ending note, too. A pretty sweet song!

3.5/5

---

crazyaga
Swans - Helpless Child

Heheheh. I knew you would send me Swans. I literally could have bet thousands upon thousands of dollars on it. Fortunately, I have not heard the album this is off of, so I went in completely unbiased. This song was certainly better than ANYTHING I heard from The Seer. The atmosphere was kind of odd and creepy, and the instrumentation was good. The biggest thing that gets me with these guys are the vocals. However, at least here, they were much  more listenable than on The Seer. The lyrics were quite unsettling, and I think the song accomplished what it was going for.

3.5/5

---

Zantera
Tori Amos - Flying Dutchman

This song wasn't anywhere NEAR the sound of "poppy singer/songwriter" that I was talking about, but it really is that type of song, and a really pretty song, at that. I loved the piano and the melodies. The lyrics were sort of playful, but still enjoyable. I really like the use of the many instruments to achieve the overall atmosphere. It almost reminded me of a movie-soundtrack song. It's certainly sort of reminiscent in sound, if that makes any sense. Like, nostalgic? Maybe that's it. The ending in particular was really gorgeous. Really sweet stuff, definitely not something I would dislike!

4/5

STANDINGS:

LieLow - 28
kari - 26.5
WindMaster - 26
Elite - 25
Scorpion - 24.5
Zantera - 23.5
crazyaga - 22.5
Lolzeez - 22.5
MoraWintersoul - 21.5

So, my thoughts on this round were: cool! Some good stuff, some meh, but overall, nothing that made me want to throw my computer out the window. There were some really cool hints at stuff I think I would really like (the instruments in LieLow's song, the atmosphere in crazyaga's, the nostalgic vibe of Zantera's) so I think this round was successful in that regard. For having to send songs that I wouldn't initially seek out, you guys did great. Now, onto..

ROUND SEVEN!

The theme for this round is going to be a little crazy. That is, it will take some organizing. This is due to the fact that this round's theme will be: TAG TEAM. But, there are nine of us! That's not even...? You're right. For this round, I want you guys to partner up with someone else and talk (through PMs, facebook, it doesn't matter) and decide on a song to send me. One person will either have to go solo or join another group, which I'm fine with either. The trick here is that the scores of each song will go to the team that sent them's individual scores. So, if Zantera and LieLow team up and send me a 3.5 song, they'll each get that score added to their total score. I'm doing this for three specific reasons: A) it will give you guys a chance to think about something that is really, really awesome by reviewing which songs have done the best in this roulette thus far and looking at my favorite bands list, gauge the options, and come to a satisfying conclusion. B) it will add to the competition; each team wants to do the best, but everyone wants points for themselves, so what to do? Two high scorers pair up? A high scorer and a low scorer pairing up? What's the best strategy? and C) this week is going to be super stressful for me, so there being less songs will equate for quicker results and better availability.

To team up, you guys can either post in this thread talking about it, or PM each other. Whenever you have decided on a team, however, I want you to post what the team is in this thread so everyone else knows what to expect. The songs are due tentatively. So, get them in as soon as you can, but I'm not having a definitive deadline, because I want you guys to have time to figure out what to send me and actually send songs that will all be in the 4's and higher.

Tips on bands I'm digging at the moment (therefore styles or types of music you could search to send):

Intronaut
The Ocean
The National
Thank You Scientist
Karnivool
Rosetta

Anyways, good luck for this round. I'm expecting it to the best yet, seeing as you have time, resources, and endless options for what to send. You've seen what works, and you know each other's music tastes somewhat. Work to send me the best you can! I'm having a blast running this roulette, by the way. You guys are awesome.

ROUND SEVEN

Elite and Scorpion
Across the Delta - The Loop

The drumming in this song was really cool, and the overall structure of the song was really interesting. There were bits and pieces I really liked, and then other parts that I thought were incredibly dreadful. The vocals really lack any sort of melody during the verses, which threw me off a bit, and the overall feel of the song was jarring at bits. Otherwise, though, it was a pretty sweet song.

3.5/5

---

crazyaga and MoraWintersoul
Dynamics Lights - One Thousand Nothing

This song was pretty cool. A bit long seeing as it didn't really have anything in it that excited me a ton. The piano around eight minutes was amazing, though, I would have liked to have heard more of that. otherwise, the vocals were very plain, and the melodies weren't very memorable. Still, not a bad song, and plus points for the usage of piano again.

3.5/5

---

lolzeez
Talk Talk - The Rainbow

Ah, Talk Talk. A very influential band on the post-rock genre...'twas a solid song. Very jazzy in places, very atmospheric in others. The song didn't really pull my attention in fully, though. It felt like it was wandering most of the time, and thus my attention did as well. However, I liked the song structure and the melodies were very intriguing.

3.5/5

---

WindMaster and kari
Slowdive - Alison

This song was really atmospheric and had a nice feeling to it. I loved the dreamy feel, something that you often get with shoegaze such as this. Overall I thought that the song had a lot of really cool things going on in it but unfortunately it didn't really stand out as something incredible. Despite this, I still really enjoyed it.

4/5

---

Zantera and LieLow
Immanu El - White Seraphs Wild

This song was really cool. Beautiful piano with an amazing buildup. The song was very Sigur Ros-esque, and the vocals just exemplified that. I was really drawn into the soundscape of the entire song, and overall I really, really enjoyed it. Going to have to check out more by these guys. Everything felt really light and ethereal and it definitely made me want to hear more.

4.5/5

WindMaster - 30
Elite - 28.5
Zantera - 28

Lolzeez - 26
MoraWintersoul - 25

This round was alright. Nothing really knocked my socks off other than Zantera and LieLow's submissio (kinda), though, which is kind of disappointing, seeing as I thought you all would work together to bring out the top guns. Oh well, still some very interesting stuff that I will definitely check out. I really did enjoy the pair-ups, though, I predicted them pretty well. In any case.

ROUND EIGHT

This round will be open. Send me whatever you want. The biggest thing with this round is that the top four competitors points-wise will move on to the final, ninth round after this round. However, for those of you in lower places, do not fear! You have the option of wagering as many points as you have earned this round. If your songs is one of the top four, you will gain all of those points, and if you are in the other five places, you will lose them. This means you should strategically wager points-- if you send something you're iffy about, don't wager all 27 of your points (or whatever.)

This round is basically the most important round when it comes down to it-- if you don't end up in the top this round, it's all over for you. So do your best, send me what you think I will enjoy, and whatever happens, happens. Good luck.

ROUND 8

It really hurts me to post these results, as it means we'll be saying goodbye to a lot of you. Which is really sad, as I've had such a blast this roulette and have heard so many awesome songs. How bittersweet this is...

RANK 9:

Elite
Bruce Springsteen - Rosalita

Kudos for taking a risk in the last round. Not to say that it was for the best, but, still, I appreciate you not playing it safe. However, I have never liked Bruce Springsteen much, and unfortunately, this didn't change that at all. The vocals weren't bad, the melody wasn't bad, but overall the style of the song just isn't my thing, really. It's nothing bad, but it's not something I would regularly (or actively) listen to. The second half of the song was really interesting, though. I would've liked more of that. In any case, good attempt, and once again, I appreciate the risk.

---

RANK 8:

MoraWintersoul
Chroma Key - S.O.S.

Oh man piano intro WOO. I loved the piano in this piece. The melodies were awesome, and knowing the man behind this, I wasn't surprised, really. However, this was certainly the best song you sent me throughout the entire roulette and it makes me want to check out the band a bit more! I like the spoken elements if only for the feeling they provide, and I just love the piano that plays along in the background the entire time. Good song!

---

RANK 7:

Scorpion
Grayceon - War's End

This song was really atmospheric. It went along kind of slowly, but had a sort of brooding feeling to it as it went. I really liked the melodies and they definitely stuck in my head. The vocals were pretty cool, nothing amazing, but still really solid stuff. I was definitely impressed with the atmosphere, though, and I really want to check out this band further! Sweet stuff.

---

RANK 6:

WindMaster
Falloch - We Are Gathering Dust

I loved the music in this. The vocals didn't do much for me, though. It's  not that they were bad..they were just... there. I have listened to a few other songs by these guys before and I'm fairly certain they do harsh vocals? I would have preferred them in this song. Either way, the atmosphere was nice, and I really liked the progression of the song.

---

RANK 5:

Lolzeez
Cult of Luna - Dark City, Dead Man

Not quite sure why you would send a song by a band you've already sent, as that defeats the purpose of the entire roulette, but anyways. The length of this song was fairly intimidating, but, as I love post-metal, I adored this. The apocalpytic soundscape just draws me in so much, and the vocals are fantastic. I love the intensity the songs builds to and the dark melodies it employs to reach such a climax. Awesome song. However, like I said, the choice to send a band I've now actively heard and have been attempting to get into definitely takes points away. Sorry!

---

RANK 4:

LieLow
Demians - Hesitation Waltz

I've heard some really good things about this band and I'm definitely intrigued after listening to this.  I really loved the build up and the atmosphere. The entire song had a really slow-burning yet powerful feeling throughout, and it really drew me into the song. I loved the instrumetation and the vocals, though somewhat subdued, were very interesting. Great song!

---

RANK 3:

Zantera
The Dillinger Escape Plan - Farewell, Mona Lisa

This is probably really unfair because I've already heard this full album a good bit and I love this song, so, whatever, I'm rating it highly anyway because they aren't on the banned list. TDEP have an amazing vocalist and I love the guitarist as well. The riffs are amazing, fast, and engaging. Everything is chaotic, and I think this adds to the immense sound and rapid feeling. However, the slowdown halfway through the song is awesome, and really gives the song room to breathe. Overall, this song is amazing .

---

RANK 2:

crazyaga
Yann Tiersen - comptine d'un autre été

Holy fuuuuu this was absolutely beautiful. Not even that. It was just...breathtaking. Spectacular. Fantastic. Brilliant. I have sucn an intense love of melodic, beautiful compositions such as this and man, this just really hit the spot. What a fantastic song. I want to just keep this on replay all day. Best song you've sent me, hands down.

---

RANK 1:

kari
Kyte - These Tales of Our Stay

As always, I can expect beautiful music from you, kari. This song was gorgeous, just utterly gorgeous. It had an amazing depth to it, and the way it built to such a stunning climax really put me in awe. Such an inspiring, powerful song. I will definitely listen to the full album by these guys. Fantastic.

Well, unfortunately we're saying goodbye to Elite, MoraWintersoul, Scorpion, and WindMaster, and Lolzeez. Five people who I have absolutely adored throughout this roulette and who have introduced me to some awesome music. Don't see this as an ending! See it as a beginning. You guys did awesome and I'm so glad I had you in this roulette. If I ever do another roulette with more theme variations and whatnot I definitely want all of you back in this. I feel bad about some of you leaving-- especially Scorpion and WindMaster, as you guys sent me so many fantastic songs throughout the rounds...just, this last one failed to dazzle compared to the other songs. Some parting words:

Elite: You weren't sure how well you'd do in this roulette, and from the start I felt like you were sort of worried you wouldn't do well at all. This was entirely untrue. You stayed near the top for most of the roulette, wavering a few times, but consistently sending me songs that I really enjoyed. I really loved having you for this, man, and I definitely want to be a part of anything like this you run. You did awesome, and seeing as it was really just this round that put you out, I'd say go out with your head held high, bro. Ya' dun good.

Scorpion: As with Elite, I am really sad to see you go. You sent me so many great songs and I really love your music taste. As you said in the PM, our tastes overlap a lot so it is unfortunate that you couldn't always find the perfect song for me. However, I'm glad I had you in this roulette as you're an awesome guy with a great sense of music. Bad luck on this round, but still, you were consistently very good. Keep in touch, dude. :tup

MoraWintersoul: I didn't know you very well before this roulette, and I'm really glad I had you in it. You've got such a distinct taste, and while it doesn't quite align with mine in all regards, you still showed me some interesting stuff and it was great to have such a different perspective for music. In any case, it was good workin' with ya. Farewell. *salutes*

WindMaster: UUUGH I don't want you to go. Your songs this roulette were so awesome. This last round has been much too unkind. Alas, everyone can't win, though, and though it pains me, I have to say goodbye. You did great dude, and after being the champion of your roulette it really hurts me to send ya packin'. In any case, you're a really cool bro, and one of my best friends on this forum. Our tastes are really similar, and we'll definitely have to do this again sometime. *cries a little bit*

Lolzeez: Oh, Lolzeez. You would send me a fantastic song, and then send me something that made me want to go do something else. However, you have a really interesting music taste and I had a lot of fun seeing what you'd send me. This last round was a bit of bad luck for you, too, I reckon. Ah well, it was fun, dude!

I hope you will all stick around to see who comes out on top, and cheer the other competitors on. I know it hurts to lose (trust me, I cam in second on the DTF-wide champions roulette!) However, despite this sad parting, we still have four more finalists ready to duke it out! Put your hands together for...

LieLow
Zantera
crazyaga
kari

I'm impressed, guys. Especially crazyaga-- you've sent me some amazing stuff this round, and then some stuff I wouldn't be upset if I never heard again. Zantera also has sent me a few clunkers, despite being consistently awesome. I'd say LieLow and kari have had the most "amazing" songs thus far, and seeing you four duke it out this round will be the ultimate test. The weight of the final round certainly changed things up quite a bit, and I am certain that this final round will truly bring out the champion once and for all (for this roulette)!

If any of you finalists don't particularly feel like competing in the final, you can switch with one of the knock-outs, just let me know. I'm fairly certain this won't happen, but just in case, y'know.

But alright! Now for the information about the final round!

ROUND NINE

THE BEST OF THE BEST

In this round, I want you four to find a band and then find three particular songs by that band that you think will dazzle me to no end. Songs that you think would make me want to listen to an entire album by the band. There's a rule, though: No bands that have already been submitted this round. Also, make sure the songs you send are somewhat telling of the bands' sound-- or at least two of them. If there's two songs that are typical of the band and then one that is really off the wall, sure, I'll take it. Perhaps you'll even show the diversity of the band doing that!

In any case, no due date for this one, just submit them when you can and I'll get the results up as quickly as possible. It being Easter weekend and the fact that I'm going to Washington DC Friday through Saturday will make it hard to get anything up before Monday, so take that as you will.

Good luck, finalists!

:'( :'(

Naw, I understand. Like I said, there was a lot of overlap between our libraries, so I was kinda getting into quandaries during the last rounds. Anyway, I had fun, a lot and if I could introduce you to some cool stuff, then all the better. Thanks for running this, and I'm definitely interested in who will win this.

Congrats to the four of you!

Shit, I could have sent about 3 of the 4 songs sent in the top 4 :lol Thanks for having me in, I enjoyed playing and your final write-up of me was very true, I can see the same thing. I hope you'll enjoy some of the stuff I sent you and good luck to the top 4!

And kári, that's a nice song you sent. I just relooked through the results of my roulette, since you sent me the same one. I gave it 7 out of 10, I should go back to it someday :)

Oh, and please, it's 'Bruce Springsteen & The E-Street Band' and the song is called 'Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)' :lol

:heart :heart :heart :heart :heart It's been really fun dude! You're awesome. :tup And thanks for having me, I look forward to having you in my v. 2 and being in your v. 2.

Also, as Scroppy said, I found it hard to find stuff because our tastes are so similar, but that's awesome.

This last round is going to be intense tho, I'll definitely be following.

I think the fail is for not keeping people on task (ie, LLTWM forgot to submit until there was a 1 week bump). And listening to 12 songs is NOT that hard or time consuming.  That shouldn't take almost 2 weeks. I don't know about others here, but I certainly listen to more than a couple of songs a day.  There's also the fail of setting expectations then not meeting them ... Twice.
Title: Re: Heretic's Song Roulette v. THE FINAL FOUR
Post by: Heretic on April 11, 2013, 11:36:29 PM
Listening to 12 songs, writing my thoughts about them, and getting a long, thought-out post typed is something that I just have not had the opportunity to do this week. Finals week is almost here for us and I am swamped with work and deadlines and so many things that I haven't had the time to even post on this forum much less get everything together. The late submission of the songs ended up causing problems because one of the nights that I was free, I ended up not having the songs. I'm sure you've all experience this same sort of bombardment of business before and I'd appreciate it if you didn't delegate it as a "fail" because I simply haven't had the time to post results.

In any case, I will try my absolute hardest to get these done tomorrow. I'm very sorry.

THE FINAL RESULTS

...

........

......................

*drum roll*

AAAAAND HERE THEY ARE!

crazyaga - Stars of the Lid

The three songs you sent to me by these guys were wonderful. Excellent atmospheric songs with so much subtly in how they are conveyed. They're quiet, but they're powerful. They have a slow build up, but nothing overly-dramatic. The textures within the songs are just so intricate and the instrumentation is so beautiful. I particularly loved "A Meaningful Moment..." as it was gorgeous and lush and so dynamic for being so non-evocative. I really liked these guys and would love to listen to a full album, probably this summer during a late night, as this sort of ambient music seems perfect for that. Overall I was quite into these songs and am kind of wishing you had sent me these songs /before/ I lost time to listen to any music, haha. You mentioned when you sent them that it took a bit to get the music, but really I got it right off the bat. Minimalist expression through relaxing and poignant music. Awesome stuff man!

Overall band score: 4/5 + 4/5 + 4/5 = 12/15

---

Zantera - Slint

Interesting that you'd send this band as I've thought about listening to Spiderland for quite some time (not recently though because LOLCOLLEGE) but this stuff was  interesting. I didn't like the vocals at all, though, sadly. They weren't powerful, really in key, enjoyable, nor did they fit the music in a way that excited me. The voice-overs were a bit much, too. I'd have much preferred these songs if they were completely absent of vocals of any sort. The songs didn't really go anywhere, either. In contrast to crazyaga's songs that didn't do much but still felt powerful, these don't do much and feel weak in comparison. Don Aman and Good Morning Captain were hardly distinguishable from each other, which really bored me. In short, I think the praise I've heard for this album doesn't quite live up to what I expected. These three songs, sadly, didn't feel revolutionary in the least. I understand that the band is heradled for some sort of "beginning to post-rock" but what I particularly love about post-rock was essentially absent here. Alas.

Overall band score: 2.5/5 + 3/5 + 3.5/5 = 9/15

---

LieLow - Elliot Smith

Ah yes, Elliot Smith! I've heard tons about him, but have only heard a few songs and none very recently nor can I remember exactly what I heard so I was quite looking forward to hearing these. I love singer-songwriter music and knowing his tragic end a la Jeff Buckley just hurts to know about. In any case, from the first note of Alameda, I knew these songs were going to be ripe with emotion and very beautiful. The lyrics are very powerful in these songs and it is quite apparent that the man just knows how to write a song. The songs have excellent composition and I really like the instrumentation, especially in King's Crossing. Waltz #2 really did feel waltz-y, and I really enjoyed how it was sort of up-beat in a sad way, still. Overall his music is very enjoyable and I will have to listen to a full album or two! Nice.

Overall band score: 3.5/5 + 4/5 + 4.5/5 = 12/15

---

kari - the xx

I've also heard a lot about the xx. Well, I've heard the name passe d around a lot, but nothing really about the music. In any case, when Intro started I knew I was getting in to something good. I really liked the melody there, and the beat was very uplifting. The song kept me engaged and I really enjoyed the electronics present. Crystalised did this well, too. Although I enjoyed the male vocalist, the female stood out the most in this song. The melody was interesting and I loved the dynamic between them. Infinity was quite enjoyable as well! I loved the beat in it, and the female vocals were once again the standout. The song's build up was really good, too, and I loved the ending. Overall the band was really awesome and out of all of the songs here these intrigued me the most. I've entirely convinced myself I'll listen to the full album in the coming weeks. Sweet!

Overall band score: 4/5 + 4/5 + 4.5/5 = 12.5/15

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And the winner is... kari! I had a sneaking suspicion that you'd do great in this roulette and I was not wrong. Every round you sent something that engaged me and made me even more excited to hear what you'd send the subsequent round. You stayed near the top throughout the entire roulette and I'm proud to give you the winning medal. Awesome job, man!

To everyone else-- you guys, you rule. The final results were really close (shame no one sent me a 5/5 song!) and so despite the results think of yourselves all as winners, as you all introduced me to some amazing music. I literally enjoyed so much of what you guys sent and you are all such awesome people that it made it hard to actually kick some of you out...

But, yes yes, there you have it folks, the end of my roulette. It was a blast. The ending was way too drawn out, and when I run another roulette you can certainly expect me to do it during either a break from college or during the summer, as I just lost the time to even check DTF, much less work on getting this results up. However, you guys held on, and during the roulette you did a great job at getting things in mostly on time, and sending me some really amazing stuff. I am really thankful you guys participated in this roulette and I look forward to either partaking in your roulettes or having you return in the future. I am very excited to check some of these bands out during the summer and to discover even more from there. Heck, if you guys find any good music in the meantime that you think I'd really enjoy, please PM me, I'm always up for getting more new music!

Overall, awesome roulette, everyone! I enjoyed it a lot, and I hope you enjoye d it as well. I tried to make it fun and engaging, but the wait at the end sort of killed that. I did not expect to gain such a workload in such a short time, even though my college is a tough one. I essentially had to put this on the backburner while I worried about my grades and my health (getting sleep) so, I hope that can be forgiven. Either way, it was fun to run, and once again, thanks for everything, guys! See you guys on the flipside. :heart

Heck yes! I'm definitely going to listen to full albums by them, they were great! Definitely one of my favorites sent throughout the roulette, really.

Ou so close. Glad you enjoyed though. :) Shame you didn't like Slint tons. Spiderland is one of my favourite albums.

Might I ask, what exactly do you love so much about it? Same goes for Jimmy, do you guys enjoy the atmosphere or the repetition or the really odd sound it has? It just didn't hold for me, which is surely a shame because I was quite looking forward listening to it after being declared as such a classic.

Yay! Glad you likes everything I sent. :) Congratulations also to all the other players, you were very worthy opponents!

Well I feel it has sort of a weird atmosphere to it nothing else seems to have. Part of it is because of its odd sound like you mentioned. I don't know, I feel the albums name is really fitting. It is a creepy-ish spider-like feel for lack of a better term. :lol

And I don't know I just love the guitar riffs even though they're nothing I expect everyone else to love as much as I do. I just think some are cool (mostly the ones in Breadcrumb Trail). :metal
