Hello everyone. Hefdaddy has allowed me to take over the running of the DT to 50 lists. In an effort to try to speed things up, I am making some changes.
We are going to do this similar to the Top 50 Album Lists on the Music Discussion forum. When it is your turn, you will start a thread that will be devoted to your list. We will have 3 lists going at once. I feel that any more than three would clutter the forum too much.
When your name comes up on the list, I will post in this thread, as well as send you a message. At that point, you can start your list in a new thread. If you aren’t ready to present your list, then I’ll bump you down one slot and let the next user post. If you no longer wish to share your list, then I’ll remove you from the list entirely. If a week has passed and you haven’t started your thread, or responded to the message, then I will bump you down one slot and let the next user post.
You can present your top 50 however you want. However, I ask that you complete your list within a month, so that more people will have the chance to share their lists. It’s up to you how many songs you want to unveil per post or per day. If you need less than a month, even better. But if a month has passed and you’re not making a genuine effort to wrap your list up, then I may ask a Mod to lock your thread so that someone else can begin their list.

It might take a couple of days for contestants 2 and 3 to get their lists going since they've been thrust into the spotlight with no notice. So we'll be patient with them.

Great changes, although I'd be a bit more strict with the time frames. 1 month is really pushing it, especially considering that the lists should be done before they're due. I'd settle for 3 weeks. Waiting a whole week in case of no response also seems excessive, 3-4 days would suffice. Minor complaints though, glad the changes are finally here. :tup

Not a bad suggestion. My thinking was that worst case scenario, 3 lists plus 12 months is 36 Lists. We'll see how it goes. If people are taking to long, we can consider cutting the time down.

Well, when your turn comes around, if you feel that it isn't the best time based on DT12 or for any other reason, then I can bump you down one person at a time until the time is right.

Thanks to this new system I've finally enjoyed the fan top 50'. This makes it much easier and clearer to follow a specific person's taste. It's really been fun to revisit songs and look at them through someone else's eyes.

DoC, I had a thought. Since we have quite a few members joining this Top 50 thread, I thought it would be a great idea to comprise a best of the best. For example, we can tally up votes for each song based on its location in the list. Number 50 would get 1 point and number 1 would get 50 points and so on. Why you ask? Because I have a unhealthy obsession with playing with numbers. If this would be too time consuming for you to attempt, I wouldn't mind taking the task on myself. Or, you can tell me to bugger off and I'll go back to doing my 16 times tables in my head. :D

Just remember that the lists in the first of the two big threads don't include ADTOE songs, so I don't know how you'd figure that into things.

Hmmm good point! For now then, I'll keep the composite list of the older threads separate from the newer thread.

How will you handle song groupings like Overture 1928/Strange Deja Vu and Wait for Sleep/Learning to Live? And how about the lists that include individual sections of Six Degrees, for example Solitary Shell on Scorpion's list?

I think each should count as a separate listing. So Overture 1928/Strange Deja Vu is counted as a "song", and Overture 1928 and Strange Deja Vu individually are counted as separate unique songs for the tally.
I don't think it would be right to count a paired song as a vote for both songs, since they got their ranking by being together, and I don't think it would be right to count a vote for a section of a song as a vote for the whole song, since the whole song wasn't voted for.

In contrast, I think if someone wanted both songs to be counted at that same position then each song deserves the points. So far everyone seems to be listing 6DOIT as one song, but we'll see how that changes as more lists pop up. Originally I had the different songs of 6DOIT as separate when I started putting together my Top 50 list, but changed that when I saw how everyone else approached theirs. I'll keep a note on the side for everything that is especially special as far as counting points. If no one else combines songs like what was done in SFAM, then it'll be irrelevant. If it starts popping up more often, I'll make appropriate adjustments.

It'd also be interesting to see the overall points for each album - I know they'd be quite uneven, as Scenes has twice as many tracks as BC&SL, but still. Or maybe an average score would solve that problem?

I keep wondering, how has everyone been deciding their top 50? I'm planning this meticulous process of listening to every album (and grouping some non-album songs together as an album) and ranking each song, and then comparing the similar-ranking songs to each other and ranking those and repeating. Given that I have awhile until my turn comes up, my opinion may change on songs and I'll have to redo the process. :lol

I had a pretty good idea of my, I dunno, Top 70 or something beforehand. I ranked them the way that I first thought I would, without thinking about it much. After that, I moved up every song that I felt was better than the one above it, until I was satisfied. Took me an hour at max.

I have all songs in iTunes and I just made a playlist and started dragging songs into there that I felt should belong in the top 50, going through every album, thinking 'this one should go in there, this one shouldn't'. When I finished I had around 35 songs, so I went over it again, until I had 50. Then I started ranking those songs. The top 20 is pretty easy to do I found, but after that you'll really have to wager which one you'll like better and I asked myself every time; 'Why do I like this? And why do I like it better than X-song'.

I ripped all the albums to my computer, put all the songs in winamp and started deleting the songs I don't like. Then I started dragging songs up and down until I got them sorted out in a way that convinced me enough. It is neither easy or fast

About half a year ago I ranked the songs on each album and then dropped the weaker ones until there were only 50 left - then I started doing an overall ranking. It was freaking hard and I had to do a lot of changes: some songs at the bottom were replaced with songs that weren't originally on the list and the ranking itself went through many twists and turns.

MY methodology is in my first post of my top 50. Basically I listened to everything the band had released (officially and ytse jam stuff) and rated it as objectively as I could, then organized the results by preference in the case of ties.

But by all means, if you're not ready to share when your name comes up, there's no shame in hanging out in the other list.

I'm planning this meticulous process of listening to every album (and grouping some non-album songs together as an album) and ranking each song, and then comparing the similar-ranking songs to each other and ranking those and repeating. Given that I have awhile until my turn comes up, my opinion may change on songs and I'll have to redo the process. :lol
I've already listened to their discography from WDADU and listened right though each album up to ADTOE while I'm at work. (I do outdoor work, just put headphones in, makes work go faster, I generally end up working more productively, and I get to listen to great music the whole time :hat). Before listening to their discography I was becoming quite familiar with their music, slowly making my way through their catalogue, and looking back on it, it was a completely random order with no real sequence or logic to it. Since then I've made my way though listening to all their live albums and watching most on DVD also, and recently have been treading through all the B sides/Bootlegs/Rarities and individual band member's side projects etc.
So pretty much at this point, I made a playlist of every song I recognised to be appropriate for a DT list and it was fairly easy to clump all my favourites near the top, and fairly easy to put all the ones I knew wouldn't make it at the bottom. I sort of organised the top 10 and decided the song that I liked the most then proceeded to shuffle around various song orders deciding which ones made more of an impression or impacted me moreso than others. I had to use certain songs as a marker and ask myself, 'did I enjoy this more than this, despite this also being quite amazing???...' Although as a whole, I havn't gone out of my way to re-listen to things while creating the list and just went by the lasting impression each song had on me. Because I accept that if I try and listen to everything again (which will eventually happen anyway) the list will just be forever changing and will not be able to remain in a solid state, these guys just have way too many awesome songs. ;D

Since this is becoming a trend, I'll repeat something from the original post.
You can present your top 50 however you want. However, I ask that you complete your list within a month, so that more people will have the chance to share their lists. It’s up to you how many songs you want to unveil per post or per day. If you need less than a month, even better. But if a month has passed and you’re not making a genuine effort to wrap your list up, then I may ask a Mod to lock your thread so that someone else can begin their list.

No problem. The list is moving a lot more quickly than it used to. Maybe you could use the wait to expand to a top 50. But if not, a top 20 is fine.

This time of year, a lot of people, myself included, are either visiting family or being visited by family and therefore don't have time to write top 50 lists.

Feel free to start your list on or around the 4th of January. The wait list is so low that you waiting a week or so won't mess anything up.

DoC, I had a thought. Since we have quite a few members joining this Top 50 thread, I thought it would be a great idea to comprise a best of the best. For example, we can tally up votes for each song based on its location in the list. Number 50 would get 1 point and number 1 would get 50 points and so on. Why you ask? Because I have a unhealthy obsession with playing with numbers. If this would be too time consuming for you to attempt, I wouldn't mind taking the task on myself. Or, you can tell me to bugger off and I'll go back to doing my 16 times tables in my head. :D
I like this idea.
It would be interesting to see what we come up with.

All can post their lists at will. This was from back when 3484854 people wanted to post their lists at once. Since demand is low, this isn't a necessity. Now if 3 or more people do a list at once, we could start this waiting list back up, but for now... there's no wait.

I've been lurking here for five weeks now I reckon. Confession time, I've only been into Dream Theater for a year now but my obsession can only be compared to the obsession with a certain British three piece rock band known as Muse. That very band were my favourite from the first time I have seen then live. DT have now become my second favourite and when I finally get to see them live I am sure they will go to number one. There are a few things that I love about this band but I'll go into more detail about that when I start my top fifty thread.
I basically signed up to do one if these top fifties and then rather than start a thread I thought I should post here to be polite. I had it saved in my favourites from when I was lurking. So in answer to your question I didn't have to sift through a years worth of posts tidied this one. It was sort of already there got me.
Within the next few days I'll get started on my top fifty. It will be fan boyish, incredibly detailed (I cannot shut up when talking about things I am passionate about) and like all top fifties, rife with controversy.
