Title: "I'm always late." - are you one of those people?
Post by: KevShmev on January 11, 2013, 11:56:25 AM
I have to admit, as someone who is almost never late for anything, people who are always late tend to annoy me.  I am one of those people who will leave 20 minutes early for something if it is 10 minutes away, just so I am not late; I hate being late for anything.  I know, I know, you shouldn't get aggravated by things that are out of your control, but seriously, is it really that difficult to be on time?  The answer, of course, is a resounding NO.  It is not difficult.  And I get that kids, traffic, etc. can sometimes cause people to be late for things, but when someone is always late for everything, I take that as a lack of respect for others, like, "I don't care if you have to wait for me; I'll get there when I feel like it."

Feel free to vote and comment.

Never. I don't waste time and hope no one else wastes mine as well.

I am the most disgustingly prompt person on the planet. Nine years at my current job, I have been late once because of a transit breakdown.  As to social events and meeting with friends, by being prompt, I am being courteous and respectful to my friends and their time.

Bingo.  I think I get more bothered by people who don't even CARE that they are (perennially) late.

I will attest to that on your behalf.  If I recall, I was on time in Buffalo.

I hate hate being late for anything. I'm the person who always arrives at least 10 mins early for work. I consider myself late if I'm not early. People who are late really get to me.

I voted almost never, but I honestly can't remember the last time I've been late for anything in my life. So never!  :P But seriously, I'm never fucking late. I couldn't care less if others are late or flat out don't give a shit; it makes me look even better. Even as a kid my dad used to make me leave thirty minutes early to get there 10 minutes before whatever it was that I had to be on time for; usually footaball practice. I see that typo but I'm not even gonna change it cause I secretly want to be an Italian football player named Carliano Gianni. /phone

I'm always early.

If anything i'm always too early and annoy myself cause I have to stand around waiting for 10 minutes or more.

Nothing wrong with being punctual though.

Relatable story:

About a year ago, I had to change where I go for haircuts. The gal who used to do it did a great job, but she was tough to get appointments for, and it seemed like nearly every time, someone being late earlier in the day put her 20-30 minutes behind for the rest of the day, and she'd never call the rest of us to let us know she was running behind, and getting there for a 2:00 cut and having to wait till 2:25 was annoying as hell, so I simply stopped going to her.

It is pretty annoying when people are always late, and just have that as a sort-of built-in excuse. My best friend is like that. He has a 1 year old now, so it is understandably tough to get out the door, but he's been like this since we were in high school. Now if I want to do something with him, I suggest a meeting time of 30 minutes prior to when I would normally suggest, so that when he is late, he is on-time as I had planned in my schedule.

Same thing with my wife. We suggest a time, I am ready by then, she is not, I start playing on the Wii, she comes down and asks “Why are you playing a game?” I say “Cause I was ready 20 minutes ago and got tired of just sitting here.” You know how long it takes you to put on make-up and do your hair... you've been doing it for decades. So now I do the same ol’ ‘suggest a time that is earlier so she is ready when we actually should be ready.”

I'm obsessive compulsive when it comes to being on time. Not as much as when I was younger, but its still there.

One thing that drives me batshit crazy is watching people rush in the morning driving like 60 miles an hour on two lane roads as I commute in the morning. I leave 10 minutes early every day and its so liberating to just take my dear sweet ass time.

Hi Five ! <, ''> /  \ <'' ,>

Unacceptable : Oh we left late... Well you should have made sure you were ready the night before and given yourself enough time.

I had a friend once who would just mither about when he should have been out the door ages ago - and I hate when people know what time they're supposed to be leaving the next day but don't get everything prepared the night before and leave late because they're still getting ready to leave when they should be leaving.

I always give myself 10 to 20 minutes extra.

If I know I can leave at 12 and be at the train station by quarter past then i'll give myself half an hour to get there.

I went to see a comedian once and people were arriving late and their excuse was " Traffic " and he mocks them saying " Ooh - we didn't expect OTHER cars to be on the road ! "

I am.  It's not so bad as what I voted, but still too often to say only sometimes.  It goes in spurts, always late for awhile then never late for awhile.  Not hard to differentiate when which is which, though, it's all about how I'm feeling about myself.

Yeah, I'm always the early arriver.

Interestingly, DTF's fans seem to be universally on time, while DT is one of the tardier bands I've seen live on a regular basis. They're not one of the 40 minute late groups, but they're often 10 minutes or so late.

I also have a friend I do this to. If we are meeting up to drive across town for a hockey game I'll tell him to meet us at 5pm, fully knowing we won't be leaving until 5:30.

I try to be on time always. I've learned that "To be on time is to be early." If that means leaving early to get there early, I do it. I'm okay with the occasional being a few minutes tardy, but being late without giving prior notice or otherwise disrupting whatever work is going on is usually a black mark in my book, especially if it happen repeatedly.

Which is not to say I haven't been lateever, just that I appreciate it when people call if they are going to run late.

People that are always late annoy me too. I probably leave too much time in most cases, when it's not always necessary.

Strange that people who always show up late seem to be everywhere but almost everyone on this forum is someone who's nearly always on time.

Although this is one of those questions where almost everyone will say they are nearly always on time, even if they're exactly the type of people that others are complaining about.

It just occurred to me that now that the weather's cold I'm almost always late for work, but that doesn't really count. There's no difference between dragging in at 8:50 or 9:10 here, so we all just kind of show up somewhere close to our normal times. I was just considering things where I've agreed or am expected to arrive at a certain time. If my boss told me to get here at 8:45, I'd be here at 8:40.

This applies to the hourly employees, as well.  If they show up late one morning, they'll just make it up during the rest of the pay period.

Yeah Barto I'm late to work every now and then now that I think about it too.  Not late late, but technically past my 8am start time.  I've got a bit of a commute, and L.A. traffic can be a motherfuck sometimes.  Shit happens.  Generally I get in somewhere between 7:50-8 though.

I usually end up arriving early, sometimes so early that it'd be awkward to show up. So I decide to wait in my car for awhile but then it'd be even weirder if anyone saw me just sitting in my car, so I'll park further away and then it could be iffy whether I show up on time.

I am not only never late, I set my watch to be a few minutes fast so I have a cushion of time to arrive early with. One of my sisters is never on time-I mean, if she says she'll be somewhere at 3:00, she gets there at 4:30. It's reached the point that family dinners are scheduled taking that 90 minutes of extra time into account.

I also set a clock ahead a few minutes just to have a space that I can use in case I am running a tiny bit late. It's usually not more than five minutes, but it's usually enough time that if I'm running late to a class, I can get there on time.

I also find I'm insanely good with waking up on time. I have never ONCE hit the snooze button on an alarm. I hate the sound of an alarm clock so much, I couldn't fathom hearing it twice in one morning. Fuck that. I wake up 3-5 minutes before my alarm on an almost daily basis. If I have to wake up any time after 8:00, I don't even bother setting an alarm. My brain won't let me sleep past that. My theory is that it is because I have had two bedroom windows facing the East for the last 21 years. My circadian rhythm is in really good sync with the world.

"If you're on time, you're late".

Heard that all the time when I was in the military. But I've always had that mindset. I can't stand being late to anything, so I'm usually too early for stuff. I can't stand it when others are late.

So hardly anyone's ever late?  Why are so many people late then?  One couple in Minnesota is having all the late people.  But seriously, I'm usually punctual (not 100% of the time though) - particularly when meeting other people for a set deadline - but tend to be more lax if the deadline has any leeway.  That's why voted middle option.  Although there *are* people who are always late and have the don't give shit about anyone else attitude, methinks some people in this poll are self-rating themselves as being more punctual than they really are.

Also, Kev, I've noticed a trend over time with a lot of your posts and threads you start, so I fixed something for you:

people tend to annoy me.

It is good though that, while you apparently don't practice it, you are familiar with the concept of:

you shouldn't get aggravated by things that are out of your control

 ;)

Actually, I do practice it way more often than not, but considering some of the other threads I've started, I can see why one might think otherwise. :lol

I voted the second option.  For doctor's appointments, I'm always ridiculously early.  I used to have a problem of being habitually late to work until I switched my schedule to arrive 30 minutes later.  Plus, when I was younger I had more problems being punctual.  Now, for work, I'm either a few minutes early or right on time.

It completely depends, voted second. For lectures, I can sometimes even be a little late and be a douche. I always try to end up on time, by making good time. I don't like taking a bus half an hour earlier in case something were to happen. I like to make good time. Also if I make an appointment with a friend to be at his house at a certain time, or meet up at a certain point, I wouldn't follow that to 100% - I'm very likely to be somewhat late. But some cases, like exams, doctor's appointments, seminars and what not I try to get very early.

I'm the same way. During winter time I find myself getting to work closer to 8 than my normal 730 start time. I have a time card or anything and just make up the time as needed. Not really considered late to anyone since I don't have a stringent start time. I think its because its dark in the morning during the winter, which makes it harder for me to get out of bed.

Almost always late.

Some of the time by myself; almost always with my girlfriend.
Well...that's not really you that's the cause of being late, is it?

I'm very rarely late; I always try to arrive on time.

I'm often hideously early, as I have really bad time perception. As I am aware of my terrible time perception, I set of a little early just in case. I then often find that what I thought took 45 minutes actually only took 20.

Before now, I have arrived at someone's house before the person living there.

I'm almost never late, however I have a few friends who are habitually late so I have a new policy, I'll leave and do what we were going to do without them.

People from my culture are like this, there is a saying which roughly translates to "the lithuanian 5 minutes" which means you're expected to be an hour late.

Even when I plan to leave 15 minutes early, I leave 5 minutes late... to almost everything....

Except work

When i was working with the POS company before where I am now...  I seemed to always be 5 min late. Where I work now I am usually 10 min early but my supervisor has told me he has seen my sitting in my car in the parking lot 30 + minutes before my shift. Funny because I pretty much work in the same complex as before.

L.A. traffic can be a motherfuck sometimes.

This is usually the reason I am late to shows.

Sometimes I'm early. Sometimes I'm late. You just never know.

I am always early, yet everyone I know is always late. When I say "meet at 7" I mean it. It's becoming so bad that I have to force myself to be late to be "on time" so I don't have to wait around for half an hour all the time.

Agree with OP; being late gets on my nerves sometimes. More so recently as I had former coworkers come in almost whenever, and one frauded the time-clock. Be accountable.

...and being late impacts others. I could not depend on the coworker, and someone who is often late cannot be counted on all the time.

I hate being late, and I'm usually not. Of course there are always circumstances that you can't control, and shit happens. If I know I'm going to be late, I let people know. The thing is, some people just naturally run that way and end up late no matter how hard they try not to be. A lot of times it's cultural. Unfortunately I've dated people like that, and it drives me fucking crazy. Eventually you just learn to say to yourself "Okay, if he says 4:00, then I shouldn't expect him until at least 4:45" or whatever. It's annoying, but you can plan accordingly for folks like that.

As I get older, I seem to run later and later.

One thing that does annoy me is when you are waiting for a bus and it's sitting at the depot when it's supposed to have left and the driver is just chilling in the cab and not letting anyone in.

Public transport being late is very, very annoying I think. I depend on it quite a lot and plan out my journey ahead and it sucks to wait for a bus or a train that's not on time (or worse; has left earlier, so that you have missed it).

Early buses makes me go mental. :lol

Most of the time, I'm early. I leave home early to make sure I'm not late.

I am quite often late or just on time, if I'm going to school. If it is anything more important, I try to bust my butt a bit better.

I just like to sleep as long as I can. And I'm not very good in percieving time.

A couple of times i've been waiting for a bus and it's actually at the stop but the driver won't open the door or acknowledge you and then just LEAVES !

I chose the middle option, and those of you who know me will laugh and say that I'm late all the time.   :P I used to be that way but I've gotten much better...sort of.

I really have gotten much better at showing up on time.  Or maybe it's just that I've gotten much better at allotting myself more time to get ready/take care of shit/get where I need to be. It also doesn't help that my life is in a constant state of chaos and disorganization with two jobs and trying to cram everything I want or have to do into the two or three free nights per week that I have to do it.

But when I make plans with someone, I'll generally just say, "I'm aiming for 7:30 but realistically I'm not going to get there until 8."  And I still aim for the earlier time and if I beat my friends somewhere, then whatever, I don't mind waiting.  But I'm to the point where I just text everyone constant updates of my ETA- like "leaving now," "just crossing the bridge now," or "parking now," so my friends can make up their own minds about when it is a good time to leave their house, or whatever.  And if something comes up that will postpone me...I ALWAYS make sure to let everyone know what's going on.

For me now it's primarily an issue only because I can't control what time I get out of work..I don't have a set end time- I just have to stay until certain things get done

I hate to have to be that way but with my life in its current state it's the best I can do.

I hate being late, but I also hate waking up.  So, sometimes.

I have a sister-in-law that as always very late.  She allegedly told another family member that she does that because she hates waiting for other people.   ::)

A lot of times it's cultural.
That's true. I really am optimistic about our generation - we have so much to offer, and have so many more resources than our parents ever did. But a lack of punctuality is one of our major drawbacks.

I'd say narcissism is far and away the worst problem with today's youth. It's legitimately delusional the way the average teen thinks everyone is concerned with every inane detail of their life. I wouldn't be surprised if FB/Twitter end up getting replaced by new sites in the next few years that help facilitate this narcissism to an even worse extent.

My brother is one of those that likes showing up late for everything.  We went to see the Hobbit this weekend and we got there just in time to see the previews and the line for the refreshments were long and I wasn't about to miss any of the movie, so again my brother "bleeped" me.

I am generally very punctual and on time....unless it's something where the wife is attending with me as well, that immediately puts us in the 'why even bother going now we're so late?' category.
