So neither the search nor Marc's Song Thread turned up a thread about this song, which is a shame, considering that this is one of DT's most beautiful pieces of music ever written.
Appreciate.

Oh, yes, I was about to start this myself, but you ninja'd me :)
I love this song :hearts:

Excellent. :deadpool:

No number of hearts will ever be enough for Eve. :heart :heart

I WAS JUST ABOUT TO OPEN IT turns into "I was just about to post how I wanted to open it too."
Goddamit people just listen to it. Listen. It's like the best of Kevin and the best of melodic JP. Come the fuck on. Be human and surrender to it for the love of moo cows.
-
I am almost overwhelmed when the sampled voice says:
"... guide us home."
just before the two solos. :heart
-
People say Kevin's samples don't fit :rollin
-
Their best instrumental. Simple yet so emotional. A melody tells a million words.
-
Question: would you like to petition the band to play this gem of a song once again on tours? My signature is already there.
-
I've always said it sounds like a really early Chroma Key demo melded together with an undeveloped jam of JP's. The best feature of it is definitely the way that short drum spotlight makes your heart skip a beat, and the sudden dark ending absolutely takes my breath away. It feels like someone dropped a weight on my stomach while I was peacefully stargazing, the apprehension, the "this-will-not-end-well" of those two seconds, they just kill me. They couldn't resist suggesting there lay a seed of discord in the faerylike purity of whatever it was they wanted to represent in the song, but then there's a clean, conclusive and warm, almost unnoticeable piano note and wintery flourishes on the keys, and the sound of drums settling down behind it that make everything seem right again. Like it was a human being (well, it is named after the first woman, so I might be on to something here) with its imperfections that just highlight its beauty.
I'm not sure all of it is on purpose, nor that it's supposed to be "read" that way but that's the fun of it, right?
-
I can tell you that the usual live ending was a bit different and more fairy-like. I'll see if I can provide an example tomorrow :)
-
... They clearly didn't want overimaginative girls like me losing their minds over it. :rollin
-
Actually, I stand corrected. The note of discord was often (not always) played, but Kevin usually added a few dreamy ascending notes right after, concluding the song on a dreamy tone.
-
I want this song so badly hnggggggggggggghhh
You know, like on a live CD or something.

Dammit, Kevin, make up your mind ;D

Oh god I love this forum so much.
I often criticize KM. Because he's not fair :lol
I'm going to have to try, I'm going to have to try and get some help here!

Amazing song. Don't really care for the samples though.

The samples don't count, they aren't on the studio recording. Which is vastly superior to every live version I've ever heard.
-
If only the samples were in the studio...but I like the calmness of the studio.
-
Amazing and beautiful song, easily their best instrumental! :hefdaddy It's about as ambient as DT ever got - I prefer the studio version without the samples. I wish DT wrote more songs like this, but I know it won't happen - Hell's Kitchen is probably the closest they got to the magic of Eve and not even that one can beat it.
Also, if you ever hear someone blame DT for being just soulless instrumental masturbation, play them this song and watch their jaw drop! :lol

I don't give samples. All or nothing.
-
Ok then. I guess I'll take it all. :zydar:
On Topic: I usually listen to the live version of Eve w/ the samples... but last night I listened to the studio version. My pants... they got tighter... So beautiful.
-
How many versions of this are there?
Keyboard and guitar solo studio and guitar and keyboard version live. Are there more than four?
I think I prefer both of Kevin's versions although John's solos are bad either...
-
I just have the version from the ytse jam boot from 93 or something

Ah yes, the NYC 3-4-93 show. Great show!
I have that and the version from Cleaning Out The Closet which I assume is no different than the version released on The Silent Man Single... or is it? I've never bothered to check.
-Marc.
-
I also aquired a studio version... I -think- its from Cleaning out the closet

I have always wanted to buy COTC... But it's so expensive :(

I got mine from eBay for a sweet $79 after shipping. One of the best purchases I've made!
-Marc.
-
Sure, but it's not really the definition of cheap.
-
It boggles my mind that Eve got tucked away as a B-side to The Silent Man.

Are you getting this information from a source? I'm not aware that there has ever been a choice on what to include between The Silent Man.

What?

Sorry, my brain functionality is greatly diminished after midnight :censored
-
Goodness gracious, I love this song. So unbelievably beautiful. Kevin Moore in top form.

WHAT my girlfriend got me a copy for Christmas this year for 15 dollars
I just looked it up and wow am I lucky. I had no idea it was worth that much and am now so happy.
-
Go and tell her that a man she has never met and most likely never will meet her in her life thinks she is awesome. Let her know this and rejoyce :D
-
Goodness gracious, I love this song. So unbelievably beautiful.
Ditto...I fantasize of DT playing this song live again.

Mmmmm yeah.

It will happen when they will do the much awaited semi acoustic show James has mentioned one or two years ago. It will happen. It will happen. *is convinced*

Yikes! I got mine free with the fan club membership.
There's the studio version from the single that has Kevin's solo. Then there's the Limelight show with the samples. Then there are live versions with John's solo and I THINK there's a studio version with John's solo.
Does this sound right to people?
-
There's the studio version from the single that has Kevin's solo.
The version that's on "The Silent Man" single is different from the version on Cleaning Out The Closet? Or the same?
Then there's the Limelight show with the samples.
This is the 3/4/93 show, correct?
Then there are live versions with John's solo and I THINK there's a studio version with John's solo.
Which shows/releases are these from?
-Marc.

I'd have to check if the the versions on the single and the Cleaning Out The Closet version are the same (I can't bloody remember!) They may not be.
The Limelight show is 3/4/93
As far as shows, I'd check the setlists.
Eve was played as the outro on the Awake tour and when it was played after that (Falling Into Infinity Tour?) John did the solo. I seem to recall a studio version with John's solo appeared somewhere, but this is the one I'm less sure of and this might be on Cleaning Out The Closet by process of elimination.
-
Just checked my iPod because I happened to have it hooked up to my laptop at the moment - I have 3 versions of "Eve" on there:
Cleaning Out The Closet (Studio)
3/4/93 Show (Live)
Once In A LIVEtime Outtakes (Live)
Are there any I don't have (besides the TSM Single version, if it's any different from the COTC version)?
-Marc.

TMS and COTC are the same, and there is no other significantly diffent version of the song, as it was not played as a song outside 93 and 98.
-
I was lucky enough to experience Eve performed live (without samples) as the encore during DT's show in Edinburgh in November 1993. I had obviously never heard it before then.
Utterly beautiful, and an awesome way to finish the show.

Ah! It is true that James threw out his voice so much that the band had to drop Learning To Live from the encores?

So then there are three versions in addition to whatever shows it was in the set.

So yeah this is still the best DT instrumental ever.

It's always the last song I listen, just before sleep.
-
I just love this song, it would enter on DT's top 20 EASILY. One of the best KM works on DT.
-
Bump. This song still rules. It hasn't been played in the JR era. We should do something about it.
-
If they do play it, I just hope JR doesn't embellish KM's parts too much.
-
I trust JR's judgment. If it comes back, I'll love them forever.

As I said in the chat, this thread must remain in the first page at least until the tour starts, so that the occasional lurker from the band will know that this song is not forgotten, lost and indeed desired.

This. Personally I don't like what he did with SDV.
-
Please, don't let this thread become another one of them :lol
-
I'm a big SDV-a-la-Tarrytown fan. It took James and Jordan a minute or so to find the right (but different) feel (from my perspective) but they found a good one. I'm sure John and Jordan could do the same for Eve.
-
This song can never get too much appreciation, so it's good to keep this thread on the page (I mean, the first one).

Everybody saw what you did there :lol
Have you all a good performance from the Derek Era :tup https://grooveshark.com/s/Eve/2GU3Qr?src=5

I know, puns like that are pretty obvious! :lol But then again, there's a bigger wave of poor souls who haven't been introduced to Chroma Key yet and feel like an astronaut in a submarine - if they heard KM's awesome stuff, they would go "ooooh, it's nice to know of this project!"

I love this post.
-
Listened to Eve today, along with some other B-sides from the 90s. Powerful tune. Along with Raise The Knife, someone (probably some record executives) should be fined and jailed from keeping those songs off whatever album they were originally planned to be on. At least Eve has a studio version, as opposed to Raise The Knife.

How surprising... ;D I wish everyone could be made happy as easily!
-
We've had appreciation threads for this song before, but clearly not for quite a while.
I love the track, really gorgeous - simple, but moving.
-
Now that I've revealed that Eve is my 4th favorite DT song and bosk made a shocking comment on this beautiful masterpiece I think this thread deserves to be bumped again. Weren't we supposed to keep this thread on the first page? ;)
-
This thread is so much clearer on the firt page.
Well, once again, in the 20th anniversary of the live debut of this song, I reiterate my undying love for this song :heart
-
It will be locked if people keep bumping it just for the sake of bumping rather than having actual discussion.
-
Here's some discussion: Why do you guys think they dropped the samples for the studio version?
-
No idea. Maybe they found the spoken wordsto overshadow the instrumentation, shift the focus out of the song. I would disagree with such a thesis, by the way.
-
Or maybe they didn't get the rights to use them? Personally I don't mind the lack of samples, Eve is excellent enough without them. :heart
-
I agree.
-
I love the song both ways, but those spoken samples for some reason make me resonate. They shift the song on an impreceptibly higer level :)
-

I agree. I had no idea that there was a version with samples at first, so when I heard the version with the samples, I was blown away. They add so much depth to the song that it's amazing. Especially the middle part that ends with "Guide us on to our Lord Jesus - guide us home." and then the guitar ends is too beautiful for words. :heart
-
I much prefer it without samples.

:) (me uploaded the gig btw). Such a great beautiful song. I love with our without samples, even though I've heard the version without samples most times :).

Ah, yes, that's Milwaukee! It's a lovely performance, I love how the wind compliments the mood of the song blowing Kevin's and John's hair. :heart
