All right, so since enough people are interested in this, I've decided to go ahead and make this log thread. Post your miles here! Remember to include a) your means of exercise, b) how many miles you went, and c) the new DTF total.
For example:
Ran 5 miles. DTF total: 71 miles
Biked 6 miles. DTF total: 74 miles
It doesn't have to be that formal. Just be sure to include all the right information so the next poster can know what to build off. And if you want to log your miles at the end of the week/month/year, feel free to do that too.
Conversions are based on calories burned. (props to rumborak for the suggestion)
Exercises with a 1:1 mileage ratio:
Cardio machines (sans bike)
Running/Jogging
Hiking
XC Skiing
Exercises that need converting:
Biking - divide in half
Sports - 10 minutes is equivalent to a mile
Swimming - multiply by 4
Walking - divide in half
Ask for other conversions if you need them.
Start logging tomorrow! Good luck!
-
blkaiotgb, I need to convert from KM to miles now? Ah well. I'd like to propose a few switches too. Biking is so efficient that maybe divide by four if it's to be in contention with running mileage-wise. Also, XC skiing is pretty much up there with running.
-
Most of us are Americans, so mileage seems like the best way to go. You can easily use google to convert. Just type "4 kilometers to miles" and it should do it.
There are obviously many ways to bike and run, and perhaps some ways of biking are four times as efficient as running. But quick research shows that running a mile burns about 100 - 120 calories, and biking a mile burns about 40 - 50 calories. So let's just divide by two for biking.
As it is now, XC Skiing would fall into the "Sports" category. So 10 minutes of XC skiing would equate to a mile. Does that seem correct to you?
-
Nah, it's not sport in the same way as ice hockey would be. Generally, a 50km xc race takes as long as a marathon. So if anything, it should have the same requirements as running. Never should have brought it up..
-
I'm not sure if I'll bother posting my runs up here, but we'll see how we go. Not sure excatly how far I run either.
-
Alright, let's start this. Biked around ten kilometres, which is 6.2 miles, so we're counting 3.1 miles.
DTF total: 3.1 miles.
-
A little help here...not quite sure which conversion to use for an 'INSANITY' DVD workout. I did the 47 minute 'Max Cardio Conditioning' DVD and then the 17 minute 'Cardio Abs' for a total of 63 minutes. Is that considered under the 'sports' conversion? Let me know how I should convert that use because I forsee me using these DVD's in lieu of my running regiment quite a bit when running isn't an option.
-
Yeah, anything cardio like that should go under Sports. So you'd give yourself about 6 miles.

Alrighty then.

If you or anyone else who isn't sure how far you run when you run wants to know...there is a great site called 'Map My Run' where you can chart out your run on what looks like a Google map and it will tell you how far your run was....the elevation....calories burned, it's a pretty cool site. I use it a lot to plan out different runs and know how far they are. A simple internet search will lead you to the site.

That'd be useful for bike rides too.
-
I've done that Google thing. The elevation charts are horrible btw, and I don't trust the calories burned. But distance wise, it gets pretty close. Bicycle computers are always the way to go though.

Calories burned are always tough to trust...either on cardio machines or online calculators that just take the bare minimum info. and then calculate it. If you're a real calorie counting stickler..there are plenty of apps and programs out there to help out. The only calories I count are what I'm taking in, I try to stay between 1500 and 1800 a day and then just exercise at least 40 minutes 5 days a week. That seems to work for me.
Like I mentioned, I like 'Map My Run' because I can chart out different runs before hand and know how far I've gone. If I did bike, I'd probably invest in one of those nice Garmins or some other GPS device. But I don't bike so I'll stick with whats comfortable for me.

Well shit...didn't know we were doing this but glad I made it to the gym today:
I walked/ran 4 miles today. Don't depend on me too much though..I work a million hours a week and I don't have time to get to the gym too often.
Personal total: 4 miles.
DTF Total: 31.6 miles
If I wore a pedometer and logged my steps throughout the day, would those count too? I'm on my feet for my entire shift at my second job...
-
If you walked, you divide your miles in half...
-
I do most of my walking/running on an elliptical and the electronics don't work so it doesn't chart my distance.
:(
-

I ran for half of it...so instead of 4 should I call it 3? I refuse to say 2 :P
You guys can decide amongst yourselves. I'm going to bed.
-

:(
Just go by the 10 minute rule. 10 minutes = 1 mile.

Really? Never heard of that before. Is that for running or walking?

I think it's a made up rule for this challenge or whatever.

Running. It's not accurate, but it generally you will burn 100 calories per 10 minutes with moderate intense exercise. And you'll burn about 100 calories per mile you run. So while it's a rough conversion, it's the best I can think of for this group challenge.
And for walking (which is not moderate intense exercise), just divide what would have been your mileage by 2.
There's no need to be super strict if you don't know, or if you go back and forth between running and walking. Just guesstimate it using the conversions.

I was lazy on Tues night and used the golfcart all night... (doesnt help that we had 30 mph winds that night.) I should be able to knock out a couple today through sunday though

For some reason I always feel so 'lazy' when I take a day off of exercise. I know it's needed and healthy to allow your body to rest and recharge...but I still end of feeling like I 'should' have done at least 'something'. So, no contribution today from gmiller.... :-[

Just registered for a half marathon Trail Run at Quiver River State Park here in Missouri. I ran it last year and it is a bear! The elevation changes are unreal....the race is called the 'Quivering Quads' and it certainly lives up to it's name. On a road half marathon I usually finish between 1 hr 50 minutes to 2 hours. My time on this Trail Half Marathon last year was 2 hrs 18 minutes....the hills and terrain were just killers.
I remember hitting the 10 mile mark and thinking to myself 'Oh, good...only three more miles'......to which my legs replied ' oh yeah well we've had enough!' The last three miles proceeded to be brutal, so I'm going to try and do a better job of pacing myself and fueling my body this year and beat that time.

Do you run outdoors or treadmill it? I only treadmill it when the condition outdoors is impossible to run in. The treadmill is great for a sustained inclined walk though
-
Treadmill due to outdoor conditions. Don't like to run in the cold and rain. Also, because I'm recovering from shinsplints and the treadmill is softer.

Yeah, I'll run outdoors if its in the upper 40's, anything colder than that is un-enjoyable for me. And here in St. Louis we've had some colder weather as of late which has forced my hand to stick with the Insanity DVDs. We don't have a home treadmill any longer but we do have gym memberships. Which is where we are off to in a out half an hour.
Have you ever trail ran? I started that about 2 years ago and it's pretty cool. The change if terrain, the scenery....it's kind of relaxing actually even though its a bit more difficult running conditions.
Nothing gets your heart pumping like running down a winding, rocky path knowing you really can't stop if you wanted.
-
I haven't run trails before, but I really want to get into it. Problem is, my max stamina is limited so I can't just hop onto whatever trail I wanted. Also I am very ignorant of how to find trails near where I live.
-
Got crazy sore calves yesterday. Have been away from excersice for three months-ish, at least running... need a few days rest from running.

Not sure what state you live in but Missouri Conservation has a website that lists all the state parks and in each State Parks link is a map and description of their trails and campsites. Maybe your state has something similar?
Start slow if your stamina is low. Run/jog what you can then walk to recoup. Even walking is a workout when your traveling on uneven, hilly trails. Trail running really rejuvenated my running routine.

In which parks do you run? I only ask because I'm going to take up archery soon and would find a moving target a good challenge.

About to go again. An hour a day is where I'm at right now strengthwise, but I feel my stamina is a little bit better. Still, don't want to overdo it and get hurt.

Just walked 2 miles...
I expect I'll contribute much more later in the year when the weather is a little nicer for running and biking.

I'd make that first shot count then because while your re-notching your second arrow there would most certainly be return fire....9 of them actually, hollowed tipped and moving quick.....
Do you live in MO? My primary trail run is as Mastadon State Park. It's literally 5 minutes from my house so it's very convinient. There is a nice 3/4 mile 'flat' loop and 2 1/4 mile loop of rough terrain and difficult elevation climbs that I run twice through for a good 6 Mile run....it is a great workout.

You go running with a gun?!?!?
And yea, I live in St. Louis. Sadly I just realized that while I know where lots of parks are, I have no idea what any of them are called short of Forrest Park obviously.

The only place I am not carrying is at church and that's only because I know the level of security that is already in place. Other than that...I'm ready to defend myself and my family....whether it be a rabid bobcat or raccoon while running or some unfortunate criminal who has bad intentions. But that's a topic for a whole other thread.
Forest Park is a good place to run also. It's all asphault but it is outdoors and it's over a 5 mile loop....lots of elevation changes and good scenery (for the most part)

Whew! Biked and ran. This daily running is killing me. With rest I can easily muster more than an hour, but two sequential days is very difficult. I think I'll have to alternate my running and biking days to get enough rest.

Hey Adami I thought about this last night....there is a great park/pair of trails at a Nature Center about 5 minutes from where you said you live. Powder Valley Nature Center has (2) paved trails that are carved through the woods...there is varying elevations and it is very scenic. It'd be a great workout just walking it. Just wanted to let you know that in case you hadn't ever heard of it or been there. It's pretty cool.

Yea, there's two great places right near me, I know one of them is powder valley, but I can't remember which one (though a quick google search will help that). Once it's a little warmer outside I'll probably be hiking there often.

I will try to update here when I can, but I'm currently training for the collegiate cycling season that starts in March. I'll start keeping track of my miles in this thread from here onward. I will include both outdoor rides and indoor trainer rides (both types of riding will be measured on my cyclocomputer for consistency).
1/8/2013: Biked 47.3 miles outdoors. A bit of a chilly day in Columbus, but I got a nice ride done on the bike/running trails here.

I did four miles on the elliptical last night, and 4.5 miles tonight (and I'll call it that because it's less than the miles to hours ratio given in the prior post..plus I did run for some of it...so I'm calling it as it actually is :P)

Yea, its still rather icy here as well. I took some serious chances yesterday and today riding outside. We had a major snow storm last week and some roads are still wet or have snow on them. I fell today once, but I got lucky yesterday.
ResultsMayVary, I don't know how you're even still alive after that. Jesus Christ.
I've just been doing this for years, so I'm to the point where this is an easier day for me, especially since the weather is still crappy around here. But I had to get outside and take a break from my basement and my cycling trainer. Doing that for months makes you go crazy, so I've had to brave the elements. Once it gets warmer, I should be getting 80-100+ mile rides in. It is rather flat around here, so sometimes I can get into triple digits. Thank God where my parents live, however, there are some serious climbs and that is always fun to do!
1/9/2013: Outdoor ride in Columbus, OH. Very wet after raining this morning combining with melting snow made this an interesting ride. My pace suffered and I even fell once. No big deal, fortunately. I ended up doing 42.6 miles today.

Wow RMV! Nice contributions!
Starting to get pretty sore in my legs. I want to make it to Sunday, though, which I have designated as my rest day.
Thank you. Instead of doing a rest day, you should do a very low-key ride or run to at least get the muscles moving. That always worked better for me than not doing anything. I always felt better getting back into a more difficult ride if I took it extremely easy on my off day.
-
Hm sage advice. So, keep Sunday as a complete rest day, but maybe take Thursday and Friday a little easier? Maybe 30 minutes on each of those days rather than an hour? Then go back to normal on Saturday.
-
I'm not sure. It's different for everyone. You just got to find what works for you and allows you to recover enough energy to get back into tougher rides/runs. For me, I just do a warm up and cool down back-to-back on my rest day. I do a warm-up/cool down every day anyway, but with a ride in between on each day but my off day. 20-30 minutes of easy activity to get the muscles moving should do just fine. I usually do 5 days of tough riding and 2 days of "resting" each week. It changes every week since 7 is a hard number to establish a good pattern with. I do a 3-1-2-1 routine: 3 days of tough rides, 1 day of "rest," 2 days of tough rides, and 1 day of "rest."
If you're really sore, I would do the two easier days in a row, so you can get a better workout in on Saturday. And then a rest day on Sunday could allow you to start the week strong on Monday. Set a goal for the week a bit higher and see how that works.

Breaking news: There's enough snow for wishy-washy XC tracks, so there will finally be some major XC skiing starting monday for my part. It'll also be less of a stress on my musculoskeletal system than running. Running on asphalt isn't so fun.

What's the conversion for having three small kids wrapped around you as you walk them around the indoor lazy river at our Rec Center? Holy Cow! 2 1/2 hours in the friggin pool playing with my kiddos and I stepped out and felt like I'd just ran a marathon!
-
Nice milahhhh. Sounds like you're getting stronger. :tup
Thanks! I was actually up to ~5.5 miles, mostly on dirt paths in the park with lots of terrain, but then the hurricaner f'ed up both the park and any semblance of order in life for a while. Getting back on the horse now, though. Want to use moderation, however...I'm prone to shin splints, and don;t want to overdo it, as that will just set me way back (this is why I do so much elliptical, as there's no impact).
The wife and I are doign Warrior Dash with some friends in August, so I have that as an overall fitness goal. The cardio part isn't a concern, but I have a lot of lifting and pullups to do between now and then.
-
mostly on dirt paths in the park with lots of terrain
I started trail running two springs ago and have been in love with it ever since. Something about running/jogging through the woods...navigating the terrain that is more rewarding in a way. I leave the iPod in the car on trail runs and just enjoy the peace of it. Running in my second half marathon trail run on March 10th...first one was definately a lot different than a road half marathon.

Half marathon trail run? That's intriguing. IU'll have to see if there's on in my neck of the woods, as I might be interested (my shins would murder me in my sleep for attempting one on a road).
And yeah, trail running is awesome...I ran XC in high school, and have always tried to have some semblance of it in my life since then. I even chose apartments in grad school based on ease of access to trails.
-
Half marathon trail run? That's intriguing.
There's a State Park here in Missouri, Quiver River State Park....and they have an annual Half Marathon Trail Run called the 'Quiver River Quivering Quads Trail Run'. I ran it for the first time last March and man...they weren't lying about the quivering quads part. A lot of elvevation changes and the terrain at times was pretty intense. At one point they had volunteers spaced out about 20 yards apart for about 1/4 mile reminding you that just off to your left was a bluff that dropped about 60 foot straight down to the River below. I mean, you weren't right on top of the drop off....but it was maybe 10 yards from the trail. Close enough where you wouldn't want to tumble. ;)
If you like that type of running I'd search a bit. I don't know where you reside...but we have a local Footwear store called 'Fleet Feet' that has an online Run Calender that I reference a lot to make sure I don't miss a cool run.

Hmmm....

Didn't think NYC would have one, but I was wrong! 4th of July is a brutal day (weather-wise) for something like that, though.

Yeah that's a tough call. If it were to stay in the low 80's...that is do-able (for my taste.) When you start nearing the 90 degree mark...that begins to get miserable..for me at least. I don't know about NYC's climate but StL is notoriously humid which really makes those warm runs a bit more uncomfortable.

All right, just a recap of the journey so far. I started off the year only able to do 3-4 miles of running at a time, and maybe 6 miles biking. I could only do about 8 chinups and 20 pushups (which is not much considering I'm a lightweight). Now I can run about 6-7 miles, and bike about 12-13 miles, with 15 chinups and 30 pushups. Major improvement. I'm eating very healthy too, and definitely seeing and feeling the improvements.

Thanks. I never took seriously the effects of a healthy diet, but now that I started, I feel SO good. Absolutely terrific. The best I've felt since, well, ever. In just a week's time. I truly believe it is the top factor that contributed to my growth. I would highly encourage anyone to try following a strict nutritional regimen for a week or two. The results are overwhelmingly positive, most of all psychologically. You just feel good all day. Lean meats, lots of fruits and veggies, limited carbs, and healthy fats like nuts and avocado. It's easier than it sounds.

Great Job H!!! :tup You are one inspired man.....
What pace are your miles at? These days my outdoor miles are anywhere between 8:15-and 8:45 depending on how hard I want to push it. My 'trail' miles are closer to 9:00 minutes. If I treadmill it I can run much faster because I force myself to keep pace with the treadmill.
Anyway....Awesome Work!
-
Thanks man. I learned yesterday that there's a half marathon in my city in about three weeks. I'd love to compete.
I'm running at about a 9:00 pace on the treadmill (it is set at 6.7mph). Still a sissy when it comes to running outside.

I encourage you to go for it! If you are up to 9 miles already I think you can handle the Half Marathon. After a certain point it's all about heart and determination anyway. Really it is. You could find a ton of reference material online to help you squeeze in a quick train...it'd probably have you do two more 'long' runs like that and a host of shorter back to back runs during the week to get your legs used to being tired. I'd give it some thought and do it...but be careful....it gets addicting ;D
-
For sure, I think I will!

Yeah, the registration is $70. This is going to be worse than nicotine.
I literally just signed up for another mud run on May 18th three minutes ago, one that the National MS Society puts on, and it was $67.73 to register. On top of the fact that they like you to raise a minimum of a $100 a person. These events and races do start to add up. There's a Zombie Run in April I've been contemplating but of it's the same cost as it was last year that one was $80.
Paying someone so you can run......I'm definately in the wrong business.

I was strongly considering incorporating a strength routine with the running. I am in excellent cardiovascular shape, but I'm a total weakling when it comes to exerting force. I was recommended Stronglift's 5x5 lifting program, which runs three days of the week. Basically, it is two alternating workouts that emphasize heavy compound lifts. You do 5 sets of each with 5 reps each. If you can complete all the reps, you bump up the weight by 5 pounds the next week. The website reads like a scam but it's incredibly popular and recommended as a good beginner routine.
Workout A
Squat 5x5
Bench Press 5x5
Barbell Rows 5x5
Workout B
Squat 5x5
Overhead Press 5x5
Deadlift 5x5
So my training schedule would look like this:
Monday: long run (9+ miles)
Tuesday: Workout A
Wednesday: medium run (6 miles)
Thursday: Workout B
Friday: medium run (6 miles)
Saturday: Workout A
Sunday: Rest
Rinse and repeat (starting with Workout B on Tuesday).
I'm posting this to ask the more experienced people here....is this overdoing it? When push comes to shove, I'd give up strength training before running. But are they mutually compatible?
-
2.5 miles for me today
-
H, it's all about how you feel doing it. Try it for a week and see how your body feels. If you feel good or a bit sore, you're doing it right. Its hard to determine what is overdoing it (unless its something ridiculous), so it largely depends on what you body can physically handle and no one can determine that except for you.
-
I think that's a good start, H. Just keep the weights low and focus on technique in the beginning. You don't want to lose your motivation because of some stupid injury caused by heavy weight/poor technique. But like I said, I think that looks like a great start!

Newly fallen snow, rock hard xc tracks. This tooth is killing me :(
@H: That probably isn't too much, unless your running intensity is insane. You should soon put in interval training in your running too. You're getting miles in, which is good, but if you want to improve your cardiovascular, attain a higher VO2 max and improve your anaerobic capacity you should definitely consider HIIT.

ResultsMayVAry.....have you ran enough to give me a comparrison on if your legs 'fatigue' the same...I mean, does it 'feel' different biking on tired legs than running on tired legs? When I run on tired legs it pretty much feels like one of those dreams where you're running as fast as you can but it feels like your not moving.
I'm just curious because I've only really only biked once in a Sprint Triathalon. I bought the bike for $150 the day before the race....rode it 26 miles....then took it back to Walmart for a full refund. I know different muscles are being utilized...curious as to how the legs respond to fatigue.
-
They do, generally. But it all depends on the condition of your legs. Usually, you can go longer on a bike with fatigued legs than running, because you're more efficient with your energy on a bike than just running. I'm able to go a LOT further on the bike than running, but that's just me.
-

I've been thinking...I think you're undervaluing your Insanity workouts. You're currently equating ten minutes of Insanity with one mile of running. In terms of effort level, a ten-minute mile is a comfortable jog, and Insanity is substantially more effort than that.
With that in mind, here's an thought:
-Figure out you approximate heart rate during Insanity
-Figure out how fast you need to run to match that heart rate (I'm guessing ~7 minute miles or faster)
-Recalibrate with heart rate in mind...for example, 35 minutes would be five miles, instead of 3.5 miles.
What do people (Especially H) think about this?
-

I mean, there are already clear flaws in the conversion system. Biking a mile, for example, is 3-4x easier than running a mile (going by calories). So there's a problem there too.
A mile of running burns 100-120 calories. If you think you're burning way more than that in 10 minutes, then give yourself a conversion that you think is fair.
I hope you guys don't think I'm in charge here. I just put the thing together. It seems like enough people are involved to where I don't need to do much anymore. Give yourself a rough conversion that seems right.

Hmmm.....I agree that the workouts are tough and my heartrate is definately higher doing those DVD's than if I were to tone my runs down to a 10:00 pace. But, in the DVDs there is some down stretch time, usually 5 or 6 minutes and then there is the 30 seconds of rest every 3 minutes. If 'H' or anyone else wants to suggest a re-callibration I'm down for it...but honestly if it's too big a hastle then we can just keep it like it is.
I can tell you one thing though...after 60 days of INSANITY I can definately tell the difference in my leg strength and endurance now when I go out and trail run.

I'll admit that I'm probably overthinking things. I'm an analytical scientist, and always try to make sure that how I'm modeling/calculating something is as accurate as possible...and I'm not very good at preventing that from leaking into my personal life (how my wife puts up with it, I'm not sure). :lol

Today is very blehhhh. I've got major allergies - a congested head, leaky nostrils, and fever - and I'm running on several days in a row of less than 5 hours of sleep. In addition, my body is worn from the copious amounts of daily exercise up to this point. Today is my busiest day for school - I started at 8am and I will end at 7pm.
Fortunately, this feeling of fatigue is better than the feeling of regret for a wasted day. Being busy has given me much peace of mind and has virtually eradicated my depression. Still, weariness is weariness. I just can't wait to go home and crash.

Shinsplints. ARGH. By the feel of it, it'll take 2 weeks to heal.
Yikes...that's no good. I've been flirting with them myself, but I'm hoping new shoes, combined with actually running only a couple of days a week (rest of the time is elliptical), will keep them at bay. Dropping the final 15 pounds should help a lot for me as well.
-
Shinsplints. ARGH. By the feel of it, it'll take 2 weeks to heal.
Nonsense! Rub some dirt on it and man up!
Just teasing you man. I hope it doesn't linger too long. I wish I had some advice on how to speed up your recovery but I've never had shin splints. I've had IT band issues but not shin splints. Perhaps some rest will do the trick. Pass the time with some AB workouts or something. Try not to let yourself get out of your routine of exercising...stay focused. That's my best 'coach' talk.

Had a very rough and out of character 'eating' weekend....lots of calories taken in with hardly any burnt from exercise. I threw in a 8.25 mile trail run Saturday morning and knew that would offset the dinner my wife took me out to last night...but I went for it big time. And then tonight my mother in law made a very good...large...breakfast for dinner in which I partook lots of. Between the past two nights I physically don't feel well...went way overboard, I'm just not used to going all in like that.
Anyway, the wife and I are going to start INSANITY again tommorrow.....she's never done that program and I'm looking to keep focused and not let this cold weather get me distracted.

My previous ride really took a toll on me that I took a rest day yesterday. So I went a bit longer than usual on the trainer today. 49.3 miles. Hopefully i'll be outside tomorrow!!!

I'm not trying to purposely, but I will likely get to around 15,000 miles by the end of the year. I am recording all my training because I am a collegiate/cat 3 pro cyclist and you have to train hard if you want any chance of competing.

Yea, when it happened I just couldn't pedal the correct way and ended up crashing. I was already doing close to 30 mph at the time, too. Definitely the worst crash I've had. It just felt like all control in my leg was gone for 10 seconds or so. I have to limit physical activity as much as possible for a week and then re-evaluate from there.
I think I just ended up putting a little too much power into the first few sprint strokes and that's what did it, because I was in a higher gear than I would normally start a sprint due to a higher cruise speed I was doing with three other riders at the time.
-
Sorry to hear that Results....man, we are only one month in and the dings, aches and injuries are starting to spring up. H, you should start a thread dedicated to injury reports!

Lifted thirty minutes. Lifting is still very easy. Squats n deadlifts are fun; though not strenuous, I feel like they are forcing me to control my movements in a very particular way. Once I get to using plates, I'm sure it'll be more difficult. Bench is still too low to be difficult but I don't want to jump ahead in the program. BB rows are medium, not that bad. But surpring difficulties on the Overhead Press. My shoulders suck really bad. I can do it but it's effin hard.

Hey guys, what do you think of the following HIIT workout? At my university's gym, there is an indoor track, in which 8 laps equals 1 mile. For my workout, I alternate between sprinting a lap and walking a lap for 20-25 minutes. Do you think that is sufficient? Or does that allow for too much rest time? I got a good workout, so I'm just wondering if there's a more efficient way.
-
2/14/13 - Finally felt well enough to run today...I have been wiped out since Sunday. I don't know what I had/have but I had no energy and my throat was sore as all heck. Depends. HIIT can be done in so many ways. Get yourself a HR monitor and go by %HR can also be a great addition to what you're doing.
Your system doesn't seem too bad though. Depends how long the rest time and the sprint time is. 1/8 of a mile in sprinting speed probably takes you around 30 seconds, and walking in a normal pace should mean that the lap takes about 2 minutes. Not too bad.
-
For sure, it is pretty good. The only lousy part is that there are four rounded turns to take during the sprint, and I have no idea how to turn effectively so as to maintain speed with control.

This weather has officially caught up to me and zapped my motivation. I'm still managing 3 or 4 runs a week....but I've never had this hard a time getting motivated to go out and run a quick 5 miles. This last week in StL the sun rarely popped out and if it did it was for moments....I just feel like 'blah'.....anyone else battling this?
On top of that, I have a Trail Half Marathon next Sunday and its friggin 30 degrees out, still icy and wet too so I imagine the course is going to be 'fun' to negotiate. I was going to try and better my time from last year but I think I may switch that focus to not spraining or breaking an ankle...

Bench: 85x5 (+5lbs) <-- easy, went for 135 as a test run and did it, then went for 170 and failed miserably :(
Barbell Row: 105x5 (+5lbs)
Overhead Press: 80x5
Deadlift: 165x5
Then threw in some dumbbell curls for my arms. I actually have completely disproportionate arms. I haven't taken measurements but my right arm is at least an inch bigger than my left. It's very awkward. Hopefully dumbbell lifts will help even it out.

Yeah, January we got ahead, February we fell behind. Hopefully we'll make it, if not next year.
Febrary has been a rough month....I know for me personally the weather on it's own was a battle being that my primary and really only form of exercise is running. I would and will run in upper 30's...but man Feb. sucked weather wise. On top of that after the 60 day INSANITY dvd workouts...my friggin knees were shot and my ankles were going so I kind of shut it down a bit.
I have a Half Marathon on Sunday and the weather seems to be turning...so as for me...I hope to get back to contributing a bit more. I think there are a few in this thread that are waiting for the weather to break to really get at it.

Just arrived at Cuiver River State Park for my Half Marathon Trail run and it is pouring down rain. And the radar shows it won't be stopping anytime soon. But, the officials just told me it'd a 'go' so I can't think of anything more fun than running 13.1 miles in 50 degree weather in the rain. Can you? Here's to not spraining an ankle....
-
3/10/13 13.1 Half Marathon Run, Cuiver River State Park :metal
(https://i791.photobucket.com/albums/yy197/gmillerdrake/A8062D25-AFE3-4B7E-8C8F-87E4CF705160-14603-000012B6211F2E72.jpg)
Twas' a bit wet.... :lol......it literally rained the entire time I was running. From the 7.5 Mile marker to the finish it was a straight downpour. At one point I just busted out laughing....I mean....what else could you do?
It was by far the most difficult run I've ever done...including the Marathon I've ran. Every step was at least 2-3 inches of water and mud. The course crossed the Cuiver River 4 times...all of which were waist deep crossings. And there were a good half dozen creek crossings that were knee deep. And actually, the water crossings were a bit of relief because the cool water felt good on the quads and hammies.
Last year was my first time running this course...it was good weather and I ran it in 2 hours 18 minutes. Which, the officials say you're never going to match your 'road' half marathong time. My road times are generally between 1 hour 50 minutes and 2 hours. My time today.....2 hours 34 minutes.... :omg: I really wanted to beat my last year time but that was out of the question. I accomplished my two goals...not spraining an ankle and I never stopped running. So, given the conditions I'm considering today a success!!!

That looks like loads of fun gmiller! How old are you? I always imagined you were older but you only look about 30-35 or so.
-
Clocked it up farther than I usually go when lifting. I think I broke through the "completely untrained" stage to the "gym rat" stage. Overall I feel like my body is much more balanced although I think my bis could use some work, so I've been throwing in some curl sets each day.

Good guess, I just turned 37 in January. I don't feel 37....but there's no avoiding the big '40' starting to appear on the horizon :eek
And it was a good time...I've participated in several 'mud runs' so I had some experience running in poor conditions, it's just that yesterday there were no man made obstacles to scale, just relentless elevation changes.

Stick with it H....you've been doing awesome! Battle through the fatigue.....I'm betting that if/when you push through this it'll be well rewarded.

Okay, maybe one reason why it was super tough is because I added 20 more pounds than I should have to the squat bar. Mathfail.

keep that back straight!
I pr'd at 110kg (~242 lbs) last week.
-
You know that moment, right before you're about to lift something heavy? (Well, heavy relative to your strength, that this.) The bar is grounded on the floor, practically cemented there. And you have to go down, grip the bar, and will your body to explode with everything you've got. It's a crazy feeling. I dread it, which is funny because it lasts only 15 seconds or so every couple days.
-
I know it well . . .
It's funny, I felt pretty strong lifting 110k (meaning I never felt like I was close to failure), but when I tried 120k, I couldn't even budge it off the ground.

Yeah, now that spring/summer weather is unfolding I think there's a good chance to really start piling the miles on. Especially the bikers of the group. I'd imagine it's way more difficult to bike in inclement weather than run in it.

Okay, confession time. I am very flip floppy. I do not commit to things. And with exercise, it's really hard because I am "skinny-fat". I look skinny with my clothes on (small arms/chest/back) but I have a gut and booty and the scale says I am about 18% body fat. Basically a skinny-fat person is a person who is at what is normally considered a "healthy" weight but with high percent body fat.
After doing research on the skinny-fat syndrome, it is mostly caused by being an ectomorph (gaining muscle is hard), living a nonactive lifestyle, bad diet, and eating way more than necessary for said nonactive lifestyle. This describes my whole life perfectly. Being skinny-fat is hard because if you bulk, you get fat, and if you cut, you get scrawny. The only way to break the skinny-fat curse is to either a) bulk up a lot and be a fatty, then cut, or b) cut and be super skinny, then bulk like a normal skinny person. So...I am going with option b). I am going to cut to 10% body fat even if I look super skinny. Either way I go, I will go through a period of not looking so great.
So I'm bringing back the cardio big time, but now I have lifting experience on my side.
Biking: 80 miles
Running: 93 miles
And I'm still shooting for 1000 miles.

I just now read the first post about conversions. Since I started keeping a crossfit journal in April, I've done approximately 580 minutes of non-running crossfit which I would count as sports, so I'll go ahead and add 58 to the total. This doesn't count the lifting portion, it's just the metcon/WOD time. I'll add more each month.

Update from my end - my dad, brother, and I have decided to do Bill Philip's Body For Life program together this summer. It is a 12-week program that mixes lifting with high-intensity cardio. The program has worked for lots of people, so it should be good. Hopefully this will make us more well-rounded in our fitness lives.

Did you, like me, discover exercise in college? I really regret not choosing a sport to excel in during high school. That's the most important time of your life to exercise because of all the growth hormones in your system, and I missed out on that opportunity. Still, better to start sometime. And I'm relatively young still. I hear men grow until they are 25. So the show's not over yet!

Yeah, basically. I was never great at coordination when I was a kid, so I doubt I could have gotten good at a sport, but I am starting to regret not getting into any healthy habits when I was younger. I've put on some weight while in college that I'm hoping to take off this summer.

ran 3 separate miles on Friday, resting the time it took to run the previous mile between each run.
Ran the first one for time. My last mile for time before Friday was 6:55 and my goal has been to get to 6:45. I should also note that I have been running previous miles on city streets and this one was on a nice track at a local school. Anyway, the first mile came in at 6:24 and I am absolutely stoked about that. I was never a fast runner through school, always around the 7 minute mark, so this is an all-time personal best for me at 36.
DTF Total: 3553.2 Miles
-
Wow Big Hath....that's awesome! A mile in under 6:30....that is cooking it. I've never been a fast runner and the only time I can do a mile quickly is when I'm on a treadmill because it forces me to keep pace. I've done a 7 minute mile on the treadmill but never really pushed it harder, that was tough enough :lol
My pace running trails is around 9 minutes or a little less, street runs I'm in the 8:30 range. Here the last year or so my pace has fallen off and gotten 'worse' just because of knee issues and "old" age i guess, but I really don't mind. I can still do a sub 2 hour half marathon so that's good enough for me.
Great job on breaking your goal! :tup
-
thanks, I appreciate it! I'm still feeling the effects of those 3 runs on Friday. :lol
Saturday I could barely get out of bed, yesterday it still hurt to walk a bit, and today I can move around pretty good, but there are still some positions that are a little sore.
I guess my next goal should be 6:15. Friday we had 95 degree temps and that track has absolutely no shade. Plus there is a prevailing wind that absolutely kills your momentum coming around the last turn into the final straightaway. With optimum conditions I think I can get there.

Hello. I have a question... See, I just now got around to reading the first post of this thread. I know, I know, it took me a ridiculously long time - I've seen the thread before, of course, but I never paid it any attention because I don't do much running. Now that I've finally read the first post, though, I see that you have conversions for other forms of exercise.
The thing is, I do 30 minutes of cardio every day. It's nothing too intensive, just a simple routine I found on the internet. I do three exercises - jogging in place, squat thrusts, and mountain climbers - in thirty second intervals, followed by a thirty second rest period before starting the next set. I do 15 of these two-minute sets. Ive been doing this almost every day for the past couple years (although the number of sets I do has gone up I could barely do one set when I first started trying to lose weight in February of 2011). I take very few days off - maybe 20 in 2013, and I honestly think thats a high estimate. Which would mean that Ive done this exercise 30 minutes a day for 278 days, for a total of
8,340 minutes. Ish.
So, my question is, does this count? Should it be logged here? Can I log it retroactively? And if so, what would the conversion be for this cardio routine?
-
Yeah sure. We're kind of hurting in reaching our goal. :lol
I would say 30 minutes of cardio = 3 miles. That seems fair.
(BTW, I've been running, I just haven't gotten around to logging it yet. I'm tracking my miles though.)
-
Really? I've been exercising the equivalent of running three miles a day? I'm glad I posted. Suddenly I feel pretty good about myself. :lol
1/1/2013 - 10/25/2013: 278 days worth of cardio, 8,300 minutes or so. 8,300 minutes = 830 miles.

Being that tomorrow's an 'off day' for me I know I won't be running or going to the gym. So I will report my final numbers.
Ran 10.5 Miles since my last post and have 23.8 Sports Conversion Miles. The bulk of my personal miles were 5-7 miles at a time so I'm happy with my contribution.

Lol. I didn't log for most of the year. Did most of my work on my stationary road bike in autumn now anyway.
