Alright everyone! As my bitching in Elite's roulette probably showed, I'm very excited to get this show on the road, so I'll make this introduction short.
Who is playing?
- Nekov
- Elite
- lonestar
- jingle.boy
- WindMaster
- Sigz
- ariich
- wolfking
- Ultimetalhead
That's right, nine of you. Deal with it.
How will the songs be scored?
I will force myself to rank the songs each round, with the winning song getting 5 points, two songs getting 4 points, three songs getting 3 points, two songs getting 2 points and the worst song getting 1 point. That doesn't mean that it's a bad song, only the song that I enjoyed the least out of the songs sent.
How can songs be sent?
I would prefer Spotify or YouTube submissions - no Grooveshark, they don't work in Germany anymore. If you don't find your song on one of these two, then I'll PM you my e-mail address, but I'd prefer to run it over PMs, because that's simpler to keep track of.
What can't be sent?
Any artist that has more than 10 plays on my Last.FM (https://www.lastfm.de/user/TuncleOm) is out. If there are artists that have less then ten plays, feel free to send something, PROVIDED I HAVE NOT YET HEARD THE SONG YOU ARE SENDING. In the rare case that I am familiar with a song that you send which is not listed on Last.FM, I'll get back at you.
What the hell does the title mean?
The title refers to what shall make this roulette special and set it apart from others, because I won't be deciding the themes, you will!
Now how does that work?
Well, it's actually pretty simple. I have a list of 15 themes that are relatively loose and should allow you all to send songs, even with regards to your differing musical tastes. These have been compiled into a list with each theme being assigned a number randomly.
Along with your submissions for every round, you will also PM me a number between 1-9. The number of the round winner decides the theme of the next round, after which I will take out the theme already used and re-scramble the random numbers.
I think that's the basics. I won't set a deadline because I know that many of you are on holidays atm and I know how much real life can get in the way, but try to send songs in a timely manner. I'll try to rank them as quickly as possible, but I can't guarantee no delays on my part either.
ROUND 1 IS AN OPEN ROUND, SO SHOW ME WHAT YOU'VE GOT, AND DON'T FORGET YOUR NUMBERS!
-
So, you're pretty much stealing my scoring system? :p
Let's get this going, I hope I can score as least as much as you did in mine!
Edit: also, what happens if two or more players send the same number? Or am I not understanding the idea?
-
Cool!
2 comments: First as Elite and Jingle might tell you having that kind of scoring system will probably make you feel bad as you may have to give a really good song a 1 just because the rest of the people also sent really good songs.
Second: Sigz and Ariich? This roulette will never end
-
also, what happens if two or more players send the same number? Or am I not understanding the idea?
Doesn't matter. Everyone sends a song in case they win. Only if they win the round does their number become relevant, and since there is only one winner every round, it doesn't matter if someone else sends the songs.
Cool!

#1: Yeah, I know, but it makes the whole thing a more competitive thing. Plus, there needs to be a definite winner every round for my idea to work.
#2: I'm having some second thoughts, but I promised them their spots. If they start holding up, I'll take action, but I'm really interested what music they can bring to the table, so I'm willing to take the risk.
-
With this list of participants, I'm definitely following.
You'll undoubtably be kicking yourself with a stack ranking scoring system. It's more frustrating than anything. As Diego will tell you, it wasn't always hard to hand out low scores (;)), but when you get a ton of awesome songs - and you will - the decision making to put one over another gets tough.
It's like 'what's the better movie, Gladiator or Braveheart?' Sometimes it's like 'Gladiator or The Phantom Menace', but more often than not, it's more like the former.
-
Any time limit to songs?
-
Don't got over 15 minutes, please. There may be a round for epics (if the right number is chosen).
Also, Diego, I got your submission, you still need to send me a number.
-
Sent yo....
-
Following :)
-
Growls? Screams?
-
I've been warming up to them slowly. I can't really say much beyond that - I like some and I don't like others, but I often have no idea why. :dunno:
-
Yeah, I'll follow. Should be interesting.
-
You'll get some shit song from me soon.
-
Cool, haven't participated in a survivor since Chad's so it should be fun. Great list of participants too.
-
Six songs are already in. Keep 'em coming!
-
Song sent.
-
Received, still need your number.
Waiting on Nem and ariich.
-
Wasn't Rich away for at least this week?
-
Wasn't Rich away for at least this week?
Yep, he'll be back on the 29th
-
Oh, I didn't catch that. Alright, so no results before the new year, probably.
Sorry gaiz.
-
By then you should already love my track. It's a grower.
-
I won't listen before I have all songs. Sorry, but it's not really fair if I listen to one track for a week and another only for a day.
-
Good man. That's what I did too :)
-
I won't listen before I have all songs. Sorry, but it's not really fair if I listen to one track for a week and another only for a day.
It could also backfire. Some songs get worse the more you listen to them.
-
Yeah, but in any case, it's not fair to listen to one song longer than another one.
-
Tru dat
-
Nem opted out because she's busy, so I offered the spot to Chad. Let's see how this goes over.
-
Damn, I saw Nem's name crossed and I wanted to apply. :)
-
The people want results.
-
Sure, count me in. I'll send something tonight/tomorrow morning.
You're all playing for secon ... Ah, forget it. Let's just send Tommy Boy some dreamy music.
-
Sent. Guess we're just waiting on Rich now?
-
OMG.
Can I join to this roulette too? please? (https://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x76/unpocodemucho/thPyongAngel.gif)
I allready sent my entry and number in case you agree
-
Sent. Guess we're just waiting on Rich now?
Yeah, that's correct. I think he's returning tomorrow?
-
I should probably post in this thread so I know what's up when shit gets rolling.
-
Not a bad idea, Cup. Also, I tried to PM you, but just so you know, you're in the 'up next' category in the Top 50 Album thread. Fire away if you're ready/willing/able.
-
...wat.
-
Damn, the competition gets even harder with Jingle on board.
-
...wat.
Edit... never mind. Total brainfart... for some dumbass reason, I mixed up Cup vs Ultimetalhead.

Also, still waiting on rich.

Well, I'm offended. :P
-
Yeah, but why did you post it in this thread?

Well, Cup's inbox is full, so I was just trying to get his attention the next time I saw a post from him. I have no idea why my brain saw 'Ultimetalhead', but thought 'Mastershakezula'. Old timer's I guess.

Now here's a bloak with his priorities straight!!!
-
Why does a mod have accesss to the admin board?
Anyway, I'm commencing listening right away - except results sometime tomorrow or the day after that at the latest.
EDIT: Diego, I'm afraid that song isn't available in my country on Spotify. I'll PM you a YT link I found, could you just quickly verify that it's correct? People upload the weirdest shit sometimes.
-
Why does a mod have accesss to the admin board?
Well, it's for the whole mod/admin team. :P
-
Yeah, just messing around. :P
-
So I just finished the first listen and I'm impressed, I hope the quality holds up during the roulette. :tup
Expect results tomorrow morning (for me, that's when all the US folks are in bed), as I'll probably squeeze in another listen tonight and one tomorrow, so that should give me enough listens to form an opinion.

Artist: Spock's Beard
Song: The Light
Sent by: Elite
Well, I guess we're off to a controversial start right there! Sorry bro, but this didn't really do a lot for me. The instrumentation was very nice, especially the bass stood out a fair bit and did some really interesting things, but I had a few problems with it as well: I didn't really like the vocals all that much, which is strange, because I like Neal's vocals in Transatlantic a lot, but they were a little grating here, though that could have also have something to do with the sound quality of the YouTube link you sent me. The bigger problem, I think, was that there were some pretty cool musical ideas, but not really enough to justify the song's length, especially between 5:00 and 10:00 it started to drag a little. The spanish guitar solo around 11:30 in the song was really cool, though, definitely my favourite part of the song.

Artist: Anathema
Song: Thin Air
Sent by: Nekov
This is another placement that I feel a little bad about, because I really wanted to like this song a lot more than I did. Maybe it was just the huge expectations that I had after hearing nearly everyone praise Anathema to no ends, but it felt a little underwhelming. The softer parts (intro, break around 3:10) were excellent, especially the hypnotic guitar intro was awesome, but when the full band entered after each of the softer parts, it felt a little like a generic rocker that failed to keep my interest in the same way that the softer parts did. I'll definitely give this further spins, because I could see it growing on me, but during the four listens that I gave it up to now, it left me (again, probably due to my high expectations) largely unimpressed. Sorry buddy.
Artist: Sybreed
Song: Posthuman Manifesto
Sent by: WindMaster
I don't really have much to say on this one, I'm afraid. When you said "Industrial metal" in your PM, I was really excited about the song because those are two genres I enjoy, but it didn't quite deliver the way I had hoped it would. Yes, the general riffing throughout was pretty badass, but it soon started to run together a little, if that makes any sense, which made the song sound somewhat samey throughout. The vocals sounded a little weird as well, a little distorted, and though I didn't understand a whole lot, it worked very well in the context of the song. Not really a bad song, but one that I enjoyed just a little less than those that I ranked a little higher.

Artist: Secret Sphere
Song: Wish and Steadiness
Sent by: lonestar
This song and WindMaster's were fighting pretty hard for this spot, but in the end, this one won out, largely because it was more memorable than Posthuman Manifesto. The orchestral beginning bothered me a little, mainly because it seemed a little over the top and didn't really fit the song that well, but after a few listens I grew accustomed to it and it didn't bother me anymore. Once the song gets going, it's pretty good, especially the riffing had me headbanging on my first listen and the intro solo was great as well. My biggest problem with the song was the vocalist, I don't really like his accent all that much, but it started to grow on me after a few listens as well. It's still a little offputting, but I can enjoy the music underneath, which is some great prog metal. The vocal melodies and the vocal effects (especially the echo at the end) were pretty cool.
Artist: Fair to Midland
Song: Dance of the Manatee
Sent by: Sigz
For some reason, I had always thought that Fair to Midland were an indie folk band or something along those lines (don't ask me why, I really have no idea), so I was glad they weren't. This was a very enjoyable rocking song throughout, especially the guitar intro, which was very catchy, and the well-placed break around 2:45 were really good. The high point was definitely the singer, who delivered an awesome performance, especially in the chorus, where he manages to hit high notes while still maintaining a certain aggression to his voice and not sounding at all whiny. I'll definitely check this band out in the future, what would you recommend next?
Artist: Evergrey
Song: The Masterplan
Sent by: wolfking
Oh hey! Some more power prog. I had heard of Evergrey and some songs, but not this one and barring one other song, this is definitely the Evergrey song that I enjoyed the most. The spoken intro set the tone nicely and when it actually started, it was all-around power-prog goodness. The vocals were great, very powerful, especially in the chorus and the instrumental parts were very nice as well. If I would have to criticise something, it would be that it sounded a little standard, but I still enjoyed it a lot, so it didn't bother me.

Artist: Evergrey
Song: Recreation Day
Sent by: ariich
This is the Evergrey song that I enjoyed more than The Masterplan, and while both are great, this one certainly has Masterplan beat. The mid-tempo groove of the verses was really cool, giving the bass a chance to shine. All instrumentalists were great, though, especially the vocalist, who delivered a powerful performance throughout. Again, the instrumental break was well-placed and -executed, especially the piano part in the middle of it. The lead-in into the final chorus was a bit cliché, with all the instruments pausing for one measure while the singer sings the first measure of the chorus, then coming back in, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the song as a whole. Great submission!
Artist: Rishloo
Song: River of Glass
Sent by: Ultimetalhead
This song sounded kind of unremarkable on the first listen, but subsequent listens really revealed how awesome it was. I can't quite assign this to a genre, but it had some elements of rock and prog as well, without being prog rock if that makes any sense. There were some time signature and tempo changes throughout that were always very well placed and never felt out of place - in the opposite, they actually kept the song very interesting throughout. Another high point were the vocals, especially during the chorus. Another band that I'll be sure to check out, I actually listened to some other songs from Feathergun yesterday evening and while they weren't quite as good as this one, I thoroughly enjoyed them as well.

Artist: Flaming Row
Song: Rage of Despair
Sent by: jingle.boy
I had actually once begun listening to this album, but I had to stop because I had classes and didn't come back to it for some reason, which is a shame because if I had, I would have heard this beauty of a song far sooner. Rage of Despair basically encompasses everything that's good about prog metal: great riffing (especially the intro riff), superb vocal melodies and vocal delivery (I especially enjoyed the harsh vocals and the interplay between the male and female vocals on this song) and great playing on all instruments. The solos were very melodic and surprisingly un-shreddy, which worked very well in the context of the song, especially the bass solo at 4:15 is great. My only point of criticism with this song is that the concept behind it isn't all that interesting in my opinion and that translates to the lyrics as well, but the music was so awesome that that's only a very minor complaint.
Overall, this was a great round and I'm hoping you guys keep delivering in the future! Since jingle.boy won this round, his number (9) also decides the theme for round two, which is:
INSTRUMENTAL
Sent me a song that does not feature any vocals. THIS INCLUDES spoken words and samples.
-
I'll definitely check this band out in the future, what would you recommend next?
I recommend Fables from a Mayfly personally, but both albums are fantastic.
-
That's about my favourite song ever and it only gets one point? I'm out of here.
-
I'M SORRY PLEASE DON'T HATE ME :'(
Also, you scored my favourite song ever similarly low.

Well, this scoring system seems to be working out just fine so far! :lol

Only missing Elite right now.
-
Come on ELITE!!!!!
-
Chill, I got a PM saying that he's on the train right now and he will be sending once he's back at his computer. At any rate, I wouldn't have been able to listen tonight anyway, because we're having guests (my cousin and his girlfriend). Results will probably be up Saturday if Elite gets his song in today.
-
Geschickt.
Also; can't you post what all the numbers correspond to for the next round? That way I actually know what my number will imply and it makes the roulette more 'of the people', since we can then really make a well-though out decision about what the next round's theme is going to be, instead of sending a random number. Just an idea.
-
That's an interesting idea. What do you the others think? I might just do that the next round.
-
Nah, I like the suspense better
-
Nah, I like the suspense better
Same.
I also think it makes it more of a roulette if it's a bit more random.
-
Suspense is good. It's more of a luck game then a strategy game that way.
-
I like it if there's a little more strategy. To me, the number sending doesn't really do anything now. Scorp could just as well pick a new theme each round.
-
I like it the way it is now. Luck plays a part in these things. Hence the whole "roulette" thing.
-
I agree with Elite. As of now the number picking is virtually meaningless.
-
come on Scorp!!
-
Sorry, I was busy with my applications. Tomorrow morning, I promise.

I'm sorry for the tardiness, I won't bother with excuses. Here are the results.

Song: Terrorbird
Sent by: Sigz
I feel a little bad placing this so low, because the guy is obviously very talented and I find it really cool that he builds his own instruments and manages to play such a track live, but I just didn't find it that interesting. The main theme was pretty cool, very heavy and groovy, but it didn't really change throughout and it does get boring a little quickly. It also sounds as though there are some heavily distorted vocals layered above it, but I could be wrong. This kind of music is just not really my thing, sorry dude.

Artist: Frost*
Song: Hyperventilate
Sent by: ariich
I had heard of Frost*, but I'm not really all that interested in prog rock, so I never really checked them out. I did enjoy the track quite a bit, so it was a pleasant surprise, but I had my fair share of problems with it. It stars out really cool, with some awesome key layering and a quiet piano introduction that segues into the main theme, which is very simply, but works very well. However, when the band enters, it sounds a bit too bombastic and overblown and that doesn't really work in context with the piano introduction. There are some well-placed breaks throughout that make it somewhat less predictable and give the whole thing a rather eclectic feel, which perfectly fits the song title, so there's that. The other major gripe I had was that the song started to drag a little around the five minute mark. The ending was awesome again, but some stuff in the middle could have been edited out. So while this wasn't a bad song by any means, it had a lot more potential than it ended up using and that's a damn shame.
Artist: Neonfly
Song: The Ornament
Sent by: jingle.boy
This song was pretty enjoyable as well, but just like Hyperventilate, this could have been a bit shorter. The riffing was great, as was the general instrumental work, especially the keys gave this song a nice touch. Another thing that bothered me a little was that the two acoustic breaks, which were placed very well were so short and barely given time to develop before it went back into the mood where it had come from. My personal highlight of this song was the guitar solo around 3:30, which was really cool as well.

Artist: Paul Wardingham
Song: Ghost of the Machine
Sent by: lonestar
Some time during which my last.fm scrobbler was down, I had actually heard a song or two of his, but not this one, though I suppose it wouldn't have made much of a difference if I had, because they all sound rather similar. That's not really a bad thing, though, because Wardingham does his stuff well: pumping riffs that have you rocking along even against your will, some great key layering and very technical, though still song-oriented soloing. My favourite part was the break slightly before the four minute mark with the electronic drums and the subsequent transition into the main theme again. The ending was little weird, but it certainly fit the song and it did grow on me during repeated listens. Overall, a very enjoyable submission, though again, a minute or so could have been cut out in the middle because it didn't really develop anything new in that time.
Artist: Last Tribe
Song: Agadir
Sent by: wolfking
First of all, I have no idea what the title means, but that doesn't really matter here. Overall this was an awesome song with a great groove and some very good instrumental work throughout. The intro was a little unfitting, but once the folky guitars entered around 0:30, it kicked off and was an enjoyable ride. High points were definitely the acoustic guitar solo in the middle of the song and the reprise of the introductory theme. The end feels a little tacked on, though, and it wasn't really my thing, with the guitars playing on while the other instruments fade out, though I had initially expected a full fade-out and I was happy that that didn't happen, because it wouldn't have fit the song.
Artist: dredg
Song: Down to the Cellar
Sent by: Elite
Well, I have to congratulate you for sending me the first dredg song I truly enjoyed, which is probably because I can't really stand the vocalist. This song was very laid-back and mellow throughout, but because it wasn't very long either, it didn't get boring. The main guitar motif is very simple and hypnotic, and it's really cool how it continues throughout and then end on it again. I don't really have much to say other than that, but I certainly enjoyed this song a lot, kudos for that!

Song: Blast Off
Sent by: WindMaster
When I read in your PM that this was jazz metal, I was a little skeptical if I would like it, but this song most certainly delivered. It's quite heavy, but that works really well with the jazzy elements. All instruments are great, especially the bass, which is the star of this song. The song is mixed great as well, so you can always hear what the bass does, and it never gets boring. The calmer middle section is very cool, which then leads into one of the best bass solos I have ever heard, I think I listened to that part ten times, simply because it was so cool. A great submission, I'll definitely check out more stuff from them!
Artist: Scale the Summit
Song: The Great Plains
Sent by: Ultimetalhead
On my first listen, I found this pretty boring, but subsequent listens revealed how awesome this song actually is. The whole song feels very laid back, which is awesome because it really lets the music breathe throughout. The middle section is probably my favourite part of the song, with every instrument shining here, especially the guitars, which play some great melodies. The drums were a little too cymbal-heavy for my tastes, but that only a very minor criticism. Great, great submission, keep up the good work!

Artist: Aghora
Song: Garuda
Sent by: Nekov
This song was the shortest of the bunch, and I instantly knew that this one would also be the round winner. The first part, up to around 1:30 has a slight oriental vibe, mainly due to the scales that the guitars employ. Then, around 1:30 it shifts into heavier territory with an unexpected transition that works very well nevertheless. The riff that enters there is very heavy and completely awesome, it really gets you going after the calm intro. The soloing above that is top-notch, and even though I liked the first half a tad better, both halves complement each other incredibly well. Perfect submission, exactly what I was looking for this round.

Any song can overstay its welcome. I just felt that there we musical ideas for, like, 3 and half minutes or something. Not the whole time.
Also, if that rescinds my fail, I have just begun listening to the rest of Milliontown and I really like them with vocals.

Hyperventilate is amazing, I considered sending it too, but glad you sort-of liked dredg. I have to up my game though if I want to win this.

Alright, I'll post the results sometime tomorrow afternoon/evening.
In other news, I had an idea how to handle the number thing from here on: I will tell the person with the least amount of points after each rounds what the numbers mean by PM so that this person has a slight edge. How about that?
-
Sounds good to me. I'll still get suspense all the way with that system :hat

Alright, I promised results and here they are. First off, this was the strongest round yet, and while there was a clear winner, the rest of them were very close and lower ranking don't mean that I didn't enjoy the songs!

Song: La Mer
Sent by: jingle.boy
Sorry Chad, but this one didn't do that much for me. James performance on this song was very good and very powerful, and the piano work was excellent, but I think that the songwriting could have been improved somewhat. What bothered me the most was that this song was basically the same chord progression and melodies throughout, with the first time being piano only, the second adding some drums that sounded a little weak - are they electronic drums? They don't quite pack the punch that I would expect - and the third time, adding the full band, which was pretty predictable, to be honest. Now, this may sound as though I didn't enjoy it and that's not true, it was a pleasant listen, but ultimately little more that that, and while I enjoyed it, I had no desire to really listen to it again afterwards. It might have scored higher in other rounds, but not here.

You were a victim of circumstance as well. I liked most of your submission a lot - the intro with the great keyboard work, the awesome vocal melodies, the calm break and the guitar solo after that were all excellent and would have scored this much higher, if there weren't the chorus. After the amazing verses with a great vocal delivery and some awesome vocal melodies, the chorus just felt underwhelming and a little boring, as though they suddenly didn't want to write a chorus anymore, which is a damn shame, because this song could have been so much better, but because the chorus was so underwhelming, it broke up the song whenever it ocurred. Really, a shame.

Let me preface that this placement was incredibly hard, and any other day, this could have been three points, but it just barely, barely lost out against the next song. Overall, this was a great tune, with some simple yet effective riffing and a great vocalist, whose voice had a certain roughness to it that fit the song very well, despite being very melodic at the same time. My only complaints with this one are that some of the vocal phrasing could have been a little better, the vocals sometimes felt forced onto the melody, but that didn't really bother me, it just stood out a little. Also, the ending was very abrupt on the first listen, but I eventually got used to it. A cool song, and I certainly enjoyed it, but the others are just slightly better.

Song: All For One

The intro guitars on this had me hoping that there wouldn't be a high, operatic voice entering, and luckily there wasn't. Instead, the vocalist sounds a little like Ripper Owens, a great range, but a certain roughness that is very appealing. When the song really gets going, he lets loose and what a scream! Of course, the rest of the musicians are all good as well, especially the guitars stood out, laying down some very effective, even though very simple riffing. Not really much to say about this, the song was definitely saved by the vocalist, though - I doubt any other vocal tone could have sung these lyrics and not having the whole thing result in a gigantic cheesefest.

Song: Face the Colossus
Sent by: Elite
Right from the beginning, I knew that this one would be a force to be reckoned with. The riffs are brutal, as are the vocals, but the whole thing is contrasted by some very layered keyboards that give the whole song a lot of room to breathe, if that makes sense, and contrasting it pretty strongly from your standard metal song with harsh vocals. The musicianship of the other members was great as well, I especially enjoyed the growls, which were done very tastefully, but the keyboards really brought this one to life. A very good submission.

Song: Adoration For None
Sent by: Sigz
I had heard quite a lot of praise for these guys, but never really got around to checking them out. This will definitely change now, because this is some of the most brutal and at the same time, some of the tightest music I have ever heard. Special props go out to the drummer, who does some great stuff and gives this song most of its power. The vocalist is great as well, his growls are very aggressive and that fits the music very well, but they are still rather easy to understand, making them pretty accessible, even for someone who is only just beginning to appreciate harsh vocals. The interesting thing was that even though the song didn't really change a lot in mood, I wasn't bored at any time, which is something I have to give Gojira props for. The ending could have been shortened a little, because it was basically just the same theme repeated for more than a minute, but it didn't suffer from it either. Great submission!

This was definitely a weird one. I didn't know what to expect after I heard the introductory horns, but I soon discovered that this is upbeat and happy music, done right. It was literally impossible to listen to this and not have a grin on your face at the end, that's how infectious it was. Like many other songs in this round, this song features great vocals - true, they are pretty dramatic and over-the-top, but it really works in this context. Another highpoint was the keyboard and piano work throughout, it fit the song perfectly and contributed a lot to the mood of the song.

Folky power black metal? HELL YES! The harsh vocals counteract the cheesisness that is inherent to power metal extremely well and the folky interludes throughout gave the whole song a unique flavour. My only gripe with this song was that when the vocalist actually tried to sing a little during the chorus, that it was noticeably weaker than his growls, but that was only a minor distraction, since he only did so for like five seconds. All in all, this was a great submission, keep it up!

Holy shit! These guys are awesome, how haven't I heard of them? From a great intro, over awesome verse with a jawdropping vocal delivery and over a chorus that was no less great, over a guitar solo that had me playing air guitar from the first second and over a growling section that fit the song perfectly and still managed to take me by surprise to a perfect ending, this song encompasses everything a metal band can do correctly. Seriously one of the best songs that I have ever heard due to DTF, thanks rich.

Send me something that you would call atmospheric. No longer than 20 minutes, please.
Also, since Sigz and Elite are currently last, they will soon get a PM which tells them which number means what in the next round.

Wow... going in the wrong direction here. How could you not love that vocal performance?
Atmospheric huh... gonna have to dig deep to find something that fits that bill.
Two things:
- The competition was extremely tough.
- The vocal performance was great, but the songwriting left a little to be desired, and no amount of good performing can save a song that suffers from that flaw.
-
Atmosphere? Man, now I have to actually think about something.
Well done to ariich too, Sampo is perfect.

I'd recommend checking out the rest of their debut. It's one of my favorite albums!
-
Schweet, glad you liked it so much! :D
Go out and buy any or all of their latest four albums immediately. My only complaint with Amorphis is that they haven't really changed much between albums in the last 4 albums (although it's a harsh complaint, because they have been by far their strongest works), but their style is amazing, and if you loved Sampo that much then you'll probably love all their recent stuff. :)

Very different opinions, I think the chorus in that song gives it a nice break but tastes are tastes.

Hm. I've got a lot of options here. Must keep performing well.

I must say, I'm not a big fan of this theme, it's too open IMO. Atmosphere could be defined differently between people, and sometimes even nostalgia, or personal connections to a song can determine a certain atmosphere which another person may not hear at all.
Anyway, it's a challenge and let's see how we go.

Sorry bro, but this one just didn't do a lot to me. Clocking in at 11 and a half minutes, this was the longest song of the bunch and it felt like a chore to listen to at parts - atmospheric, yes, but in some places it verged on the border of being flat-out boring. The structure became a little formulaic after a while, because it was basically calm, acoustic guitars - heavier part with distorted guitars - rinse and repeat throughout. The instrumentation itself was quite good, especially the keys and the guitar playing, but something about the singer bothered me, even though I can't really put my finger on it. Still, not a bad song by any means, but not really that good either.

Song: Dawn of a Million Souls
Sent by: jingle.boy
After hearing everyone hype Ayreon, I started listening to THE sometime ago and I think I quit after the third track or something, so I was a little wary when I saw that you had sent me a track from them. It was definitely better than anything that I had heard from the band before, so I'll give you that, but it still didn't really click with me. I don't really think that this is all that atmospheric, but your reasoning does make sense and it was a rather hazy theme, so I won't take off points for that. As with THE, the instrumentalists were quite good and the track was well composed (better than the THE songs that I listened to), especially the instrumental section was pretty cool, with the simpler solo leading into the all-out shred solo, that worked really well. My biggest problem with this one were the keyboards, they sound extremely cheesy and really detracted from the enjoyment of the song. All in all, not a bad song, but it has more potential than that that was used.

Song: The Storm Before the Calm
Sent by: WindMaster
I was rather hopeful that this would make a better impression than Thin Air did, but it seems that Anathema isn't the band for me. There were some cool parts (like with Thin Air, I especially liked the calmer parts), like the intro guitar and the break in the middle of the song with the choir above it. However, the ending dragged on for far too long for my tastes and the beginning, after the intro motif was rather lackluster, in my opinion. It had a lot going on, but it wasn't really memorable in any shape or form.

Song: Microburst Alert
Sent by: Ultimetalhead
I had listened to a few OSI tracks already, but none off of Blood except for the title track, so I let this one slide. Overall, it was a great song, I really dug the simple riffing, the groove of the track and the electronic elements, though I have to be in the right mood for electronic music in general. The best part of the song was the simple yet effective riff that enters around the 2:30 minute mark. The one gripe I had with this song was that the electronically modified vocals weren't really my cup of tea here, I think I would have enjoyed it more as an instrumental, but I still liked it a lot.

Song: Beautiful and Monstrous

Kade seems to have a penchant for landing in the middle of the pack, it seems. Like the other rounds, I thoroughly enjoyed this track, especially the intro, which set the tone nicely for the rest of the song. I was a little taken aback when the vocals entered and they are definitely the weakest point of the song, even though I warmed up to them a little, the vocals just sound a little whiny in the higher range. The vocal melodies were great, though, and the song was very enjoyable as a whole. Keep it up!

Song: Écailles de Lune, Part 1
Sent by: ariich
Another band that I hadn't checked out earlier, even though I had heard a lot of good stuff. This was a great tune, the instrumentation is very subdued at the beginning, but it draws you into the song all the same. The vocals are great as well, they sound a little distant, but it helps them blend into the overall sound very well. The tempo and mood shift around 7:45 came a little sudden on the first listen, but it makes sense and it fits the song, keeping it from becoming boring by changing the mood drastically. The fade-out at the end felt a little cheap, I think this song would have deserved a "proper" ending, but I still liked it a lot.

You're right, you don't hear that they are a black metal band in this track. It was probably the track that had the least going on of all tracks, but that didn't hinder my enjoyment in the slightest. The whole song feels very dense, right from the start, without sounding crushing and oppressing, but rather soothing and calming. I especially liked the drums with the little echo they have, making them sound a little distant, which works very well. There's not really much else to say because not a lot happens here, but it was a great track.

I swear I'm not doing this on purpose, that you and Elite are tied! This was a great and very enjoyable song, the guitar melody sounds very hypnotic and draws you into the song right from the beginning. The lead guitar which slowly emerges creates a great transition into the heavier, distorted riffs later in the song, without sounding out of place. As with Elite's song, not a lot happens here, it rather lets the listener get lost in the song, but it was a great listen anyway.

When I read that this track features Ian Mosley and Pete Trewavas, I was pretty excited, because Marillion is one of the only prog rock bands that I actually like. This track lived up to every last bit of my expectations and then some. It features a lengthy buildup, nearly three minutes long, but it doesn't feel too long or stretched out at all. After that, a beautiful guitar melody enters, all the while supported by great drumming, impressive key layering and some subtle yet awesome bass playing, which becomes evident in the middle part, where the bass assumes a more prominent role. The ending was a little abrupt, but it still fit the song somehow. This is exactly what I was looking for, perfect submission!

Shamelessly lifted from Elite's roulette, I want you to send me a song that features an unusual instrument. Any instrument that is not keyboards/piano, guitar, bass, drums or vocals shall be considered unusual.
A PM will be sent to lonestar shortly, telling him what the numbers will mean in the next round.

Well, this had to come someday, the first time that you really fail to send me something that I like. I'm sorry, but for a large part of the song, I was simply scratching my head. There was just so much going on! Even after repeated listens and after slowly getting a grip on this, it feels like too much and too random. Many parts were cool individually, but they didn't really fit together. To add to that, I didn't like the vocals on this one, though I couldn't really say why if I were asked for a reason. Sorry, but this wasn't my cup of tea.

Just like Ensiferum, this is folkish black metal, but they don't do that style nearly as well as those aforementioned. Maybe being disappointed is kinda my fault, because I had pretty high expectation, but nonetheless I was left a little disappointed by this one. It's not really a flaw of the song - the vocals, the riffing, the key layering and that folky interlude were all awesome, but as a whole, it was a nice listen, but not really anything more. The chorus probably contributed to that, it felt pretty underwhelming after the intense verses.

Where to begin here? Well, it contained a violin, which is pretty cool in its own right, because I most definitely didn't expect any of the songs that I got to feature that particular instrument, and the violin does some pretty cool stuff throughout the piece (though the violinist does look pretty awkward during the moments where he isn't playing), as do the other instruments. However, I'm not really that big a fan of this type of music and the vocals weren't really my cup of tea, even though the vocal melodies were pretty good. By no means a bad song, but considering how good the rest of the submissions were, this is what this song has to contend with.

If you had asked me what kind of music the singer of Scar Symmetry makes during his solo career, electronically-laced sax-driven pop would most definitely not have been the answer, but it works surprisingly well. His clean vocals are just as good as his harsh ones (though I do miss the contrast, but growls would have obviously been out of place here) and the vocal melodies fit his voice perfectly. Songwise, this is pretty much straightforward pop with a saxophone included, but it was a very enjoyable listens. The way that electronic effects are used throughout was pretty nifty.

The award for the song title that's the hardest to pronounce goes to Sigz for this one. On the musical side, this was a pretty diverse song that had a lot going on, but never to the song's detriment. On the first few listens, I felt that this was too whacky, but I warmed up to it quite a bit and ended up enjoying it a fair bit. The guitar work especially is top-notch throughout, laying down some fresh and funky riffs that really keep the song going. Very good submission!

Wow, this was really something else! Some awesome folk metal with an accordion to boot! The whole song was very frantic and aggressive, but it worked very well, especially in combination with the vocals. Especially the chorus stood out a fair bit. The best part of the song was probably the accordion solo in the middle of the song, it retained the frantic pace without wandering off into wankery territory at any moment. The last repetition of the chorus was a little unnecessary, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment at all. Great submission!

I had always thought Mr. Bungle were a experimental metal group, so imagine my surprise upon hearing this! The whole piece is very laid back with not a whole lot going on, but rather focusing on the atmosphere, but I enjoyed it all the same. The ending threw me off a little on my first listen, but it does fit the song somewhat.

I have heard a few songs by Nightwish, but never anything off of Once, so I let it slide, and I'm happy I did, because this song blew every other Nightwish song I know out of the water. The whole song has a very tribal feel to it, courtesy of the drums, and it features some great vocals by Tarja. The flute is a nice addition to the song and the guitar solo around the middle of the track is particularly great. The spoken word part at the end was a little "wtf?" at first, but I grew to like it as well. Great submission, I'll definitely check out the rest of Once soon!

LADIES TO THE MIC
Send me a song featuring female vocals. They can be the only vocals or mixed with male vocals throughout the song.

glad you enjoyed. Your last.fm didn't have any Nightwish listens, so I'm glad it still was ok. Once is great, but Century Child is the best them.

Cool! Yes, Mr. Bungle is an experimental group and they do some metal-ish stuff, but the majority of their things is very experimental (especially the album 'Disco Volante'). Everything is very weird and the one I sent is probably one of the more accessible ones, but check them out if you liked that :)

Fucking ouch. I almost sent a DFD song too. :lol
Thankfully I know plenty of awesome female vox, so I WILL be reclaiming the throne.

Cross thread trash talk? Scrop, penalize him!

What trash talk? I told him he was epic. Stop looking for lame excuses to get your opponents down ;)

You're right. You wouldn't know how to trash talk even if Charles Barkley wrote you the script.

I want to face this off with saying that there was not a single song that I didn't enjoy this round, so the low places shouldn't feel bad at all, everyone sent me some amazing music! :)

Artist: After Forever
Song: Equally Destructive
Sent by: ariich
What can I say about this one? The instrumentation was top-notch, especially the concise riffing and the way that the guitar and the synth complimented each other. The vocals were great as well, very powerful and perfectly suited to the song. The problem that I had with this song, or better the reason that it didn't score higher is that it felt very familiar, not really anything new or special, and while some bands can make that work, it didn't work that well here. Don't get me wrong, it was an enjoyable tune, but nothing was really special about it either.

Song: This Is Not The Original Dream
Sent by: wolfking
Behold! wolfking has not gotten three points for the first time in this roulette! I doubt he'll be pleased, but like ariich's song, this was a victim of the strong submissions that it had to compete with. The instrumentation was great, especially the guitar work (dat guitar solo :hefdaddy), and I enjoyed the grittier vocal tone, but it felt a little run-of-the-mill to me. Good, but nothing really special either. The guitar work and the vocals were absolutely perfect and set it above rich's submission just a little bit.
Artist: Of Monsters and Men
Song: Little Talks
Sent by: WindMaster
Well, standard sound is something that I can definitely not fault these guys for! This was something I wasn't expecting, some folkie stuff that had me smiling all the way through. The use of the horns especially added a level of infectious quirkiness from this song that had me fighting hard against dancing to it like a total tool. The interplay between male and female vocals was awesome as well. It actually felt a little like Foxy Shazam's Oh Lord in pieces, which is totally a good thing. All in all, this was the toughest decision, because this song totally deserves three points, but one of them had to get bumped down. Sorry brah.

Song: Games We Play
Sent by: jingle.boy
Just a smidgen ahead of WindMaster's submission, this one is back in familiar prog-metal territory. Like the other proggish submission, this has stellar instrumental work, especially on the guitars and a powerful female vocal sound - awesome! What set this one apart from wolfking's and ariich's submission was the keyboard work (that piano breakdown in the middle was perfect!) and the catchiness of the vocal lines, I was singing along at the top of my voice during the second chorus already. Great song!
Artist: Vandroya
Song: The Last Free Land
Sent by: lonestar
Another proggish submission, this one was great in every aspect. Like the others, it lacked a little novelty, but sometimes, it's not about who did it first, but who does it best, and Vandroya are damn awesome at what they do. Apart from the usual stuff that I could just repeat (great instrumentation, powerful voice, enjoyable vocal lines, blah blah blah), what really set this apart was the instrumental part. Both the guitar solo and the synthy interlude are executed perfectly, and the moment that the chorus comes back in is fucking awesome. :metal#
Artist: Effloresce
Song: Sunset in the Snowdome
Sent by: Nekov
This nearly made the four-point category, awesome submission throughout! The way that they manage to switch between calmer and heavier parts without breaking a sweat is great, and I really like both the lyrics and their delivery. The growls were a nice touch, even though they were only employed for a short time, they rounded the whole thing off. Again, the guitar work was great throughout, though I think it would have worked even better if there had been a proper solo thrown in somewhere - if executed correctly, that would have pushed the song up several notches. Also, insert obligatory patriotic comment for a German band here. :metal

Artist: Eisley
Song: Memories
Sent by: Ultimetalhead
In contrast to the many of the other submissions, the instrumental work here was very subdued, allowing the jawdropping vocals to truly shine through. This has to be one of the best voices that I have ever heard, the tone, the range and the timbre are nothing short of astounding. There are some parts were there are two voices harmonising, I can't tell if that the same voice twice or two voices, but it sounds even more amazing. Beautiful submission, worth the four points for this gorgeous voice alone.
Artist: Floex
Song: Nel Blu
Sent by: Sigz
This one went a totally different route than all the others, going only with some electronic elements and a soothing voice and it worked wonderfully. The main groove of the song was beautiful, atmospheric and hypnotic at the same time, really drawing you into the song. I don't understand a word of the lyrics, but that doesn't bother me in the slightest, because this song just allows you to let yourself drift in it. The five minutes something flew by as well, with the whole never feeling boring, despite not a lot really happening - perfect pacing, and a wonderful submission on the whole.

On the first listen, I would have never guessed that this song would become my favourite of the bunch, because it felt a little disjointed, but repeated listens showed me that that wasn't the case at all. This is another proggish submission, and it's the longest song as well, but it doesn't fell lengthy at any point. The duet between male and female vocals is great, though I actually like the part with the lead male vocals a little better. The guitar solo after that is a textbook example of what a perfect solo should sound like and that final chorus-like vocal part sent chills down my spine on every listen. Perfect submission!

Elite won the round, so his number 6 chooses the next round's topic, which will be:
QUICKIE
Send me a song that manages to impress in less than 4 minutes.
This will be the final themed round, after which the roulette will close with an open round, WHICH WILL BE WORTH DOUBLE POINTS, SO THIS IS STILL EVERYONE'S GAME!

Fuck, who do I have to blow to get above a fucking three?
(rhetorical question btw)

Laaaaaaame. But glad you liked it.
-
Alright. Now that I've reclaimed my lead (which I've been incidentally sharing with 3 others), no more fucking around. Will send shortly.
-

Suuuuuurrree! Considerable lol was had.
Hot damn, Equally Destructive was a potential submission. Glad I didn't!
Quick hit huh? Well, as RJ knows, I suck at anything under 3 minutes. 4 minutes gives me barely enough time to impress. At least, that's what Mrs.Jingle tells me.

I disagree, I use to ponder quite a lot on what to send and I always got great results. This one it's taken me no more than 2 minutes to pick a song and I'm just middle of the road. I think if I put more thought into it, I could get a higher score.

This was probably my favourite round so far, even the low placings where really enjoyable songs in their own right, and there was not one song that I didn't at the very least like!

First of all, I dig the positive vibe of this song quite a bit. The simple but memorable guitar patterns really do their work well, and when the drumming kicks in during the second half, it's very to-the-point as well. The vocalist is pretty great too, but I absolutely despise these cheesy backing vocals. If they had been improved, I would have ranked this somewhere around the 4 point range, but those, while they don't exactly kill it for, make it a lesser song than it could have been. I still liked it, but it did waste a lot of potential.

Artist: Thrice
Song: Between the End and Where I Lie
Sent by: ariich
The first thing that stood out to me was the fucking awesome vocalist. He dominates on this whole track and has an incredibly pleasant sound that makes it fun to listen to him. I also liked the keys a lot throughout. However, the drumming was a little to upfront and left me wishing that the drummer would reign himself in a little. Still, a very enjoyable song, but it had a lot of tough competition.
Artist: Hardline
Song: In This Moment
Sent by: jingle.boy
I definitely wasn't expecting to get a piano-and-vocals song from you, but it worked surprisingly well, I think. The singer's voice is great, he manages to keep the whole thing somber and never cheesy throughout. He actually reminds me a little of an Avantasia guest vocalist whose name I forgot, but I digress. The vocal melodies and the piano playing were very pleasant as well, making this a very enjoyable song, but it didn't have as much to offer as the other submissions, sadly. I still liked it a lot, though.

Song: Storm Chaser
Sent by: wolfking
These guys remind me a lot of Judas Priest from a musical standpoint - awesome riffing throughout, a gret guitar tone, twin leads. The vocalist was a little different, but I enjoyed what he did all the same. One minor gripe with this one was that I was expecting a really fucking epic guitar solo and it didn't hold up to those expectations. It wasn't bad, but it didn't quite match the song in terms of awesomeness.
Artist: Mehida
Song: Burning Earth
Sent by: lonestar
First of all, the quality of this one was crap, but that's probably YT's fault. The song itself was awesome though, I especially liked how the vocalist handled the highs, they were really soaring and not whiny in the slightest. The instrumentation was stellar throughout, though the standout was easily the instrumental section, which featured some great keyboard playing and creative drumming. Awesome song!
Artist: Illegal Aliens
Song: Ratrace
Sent by: Nekov
This song was the toughest to rank. It's very all-over-the-place, but it retains its identity all the same. The instruments are truly whacky, especially the bass and the male and female vocals are great. The problem I had here was that my enjoyment of this song is, more than any other submission, dependant on my mood - when I first listened, I thought it was the best thing ever, but I didn't like it at all during some listens as well, so this is kind of how I like it on average, even though it's still a fucking amazing song most of the time.

Black-metal-punk? Before hearing this song, I was sure that this could never work, but these guys convinced me otherwise. The combination of punkish riffs and intense black metal vocals gives this song a level of intensity that is unmatched. I especially liked how there was a little acoustic part in the middle which let the song calm down before exploding again. The ending was pretty nifty as well.
Artist: Caravan Palace
Song: Brotherswing

This is what I would imagine would happen if Diablo Swing Orchestra went electronic. We have awesome female vocals, some great swingy horns in the background and a pulsing electronic beat that holds the whole thing together and pushes it on. Especially the solo in the middle by what I think was a sax was awesome.

That was me after my first listen. It is really astounding how well this band blends saxy craziness, funky basswork and some of the best vocals that I've heard into this package of awesomeness. I love how the sax solo transitions into the groovy piano solo that leaves me a little envious of that guy's skills. Awesome song, one of the best in this roulette.

Artist: Ulver
Song: Porn Piece or the Scars of Cold Kisses
Sent by: Sigz
This song was more ambient and atmospheric than anything, and while that is certainly something I enjoy, this didn't really hold my attention throughout, sadly. I did like how the band used electronic instruments a lot, and the vocals were very pleasant, but I always had to actively focus on this song if I wanted to actually be able to say something about it at the end, while the other songs grabbed me, so I won't give this more than 5 points.
Artist: Riot
Song: Storming the Gates of Hell
Sent by: Ultimetalhead
This song started off cool, but the moment the singer came in, I was just wishing throughout that he would shut the fuck up. Instrumentally, this song was top-notch, featuring some creative and intense riffing, actually audible basslines and some pretty sweet horns, but the vocals made it hard to bear the first time. After a few listens, I started warming up to the vocals a bit, but they're still the weakest link of this otherwise pretty cool band. 6 points.
Artist: Pagan's Mind
Song: God's Equation
Sent by: Nekov
Another song where the vocals were a little grating at first, but they didn't bother me as much here as in UMH's submission. This is some killer prog metal, with some intense riffing throughout and an awesome, awesome guitar solo that had me failing abysmally at air-guitarring from the first listen. The last minute or so, however, doesn't hold my attention anymore, because nothing really new happens. Still a great song, 7 points.
Artist: Orphaned Land
Song: The Birth of the Three (The Unification)
Sent by: WindMaster
My first exposure to Orphaned Land was checking them out on YouTube after hearing of them on DTF, but I hated growls back then, so I quickly discared them again. This song shows that I should probably try them out again, as it features many of the things I like a lot: very good growls, great guitar playing, both acoustic and electric (DAT GUITAR SOLO) and some tight musicianship throughout. I've actually read the comparison that they are kind of like Opeth with Middle Eastern influence, and that's pretty close. The one gripe I had was the clean vocals were nowhere near as good as the growls (something that can't be said for Opeth), but I still enjoyed it a lot. Another 7 points.
Artist: Voyager
Song: The Meaning of I
Sent by: wolfking
The first thing I noticed about this song was the great intro (duh!) and how it leads into that heavy, almost djenty riff - which is awesome, by the way. In fact, this whole song features awesome musicianship, mainly on the guitar, throughout. The vocals where a little off-putting on the first listen because they are pretty monotonous, but they fit the song well and I warmed up to them slowly. Great song, take 8 points for it.
Artist: Twelve-Foot Ninja
Song: Coming For You
Sent by: ariich
You're the guy in the roulette that's been tickling my somewhat whacky fancy, and you did it again here. Awesome song, which starts out as a metal attack but you've barely blinked and it's suddenly swing! How awesome is that? Well, granted, it has to be well-done, but those dudes do just that, so it's awesome. The video that I found for this on YouTube is pretty fucked up, but that doesn't hinder my musical enjoyment. A whoppin' 8 points for the Brit.
Artist: Pain of Salvation
Song: Iter Impius
Sent by: Elite
With most artists, I have a "three-strikes-rule": if I try them three times and they don't stick or at least improve, then they're probably not for me. I had tried out PoS twice before and they had leftly me largely scratching their head, so I was both excited and a little skeptical when this song arrived in my mailbox - but POS don't have to worry, because while they didn't stick the first tries, they nailed it here. The way that the song begins with some simple piano and one of the most emotional vocal deliveries, only to segue into a great climax when the electric guitars enter is nothing short of astounding. The guitar solo is a thing of beauty as well. Great, great song, I'll definitely try out Pain of Salvation again! 9 points.
Artist: Incura
Song: Here to Blame
Sent by: lonestar
I knew that you had it in you to blow me away, and finally, you delivered. This song is pretty short, barely longer than four minutes, but damn, this is awesome. The intro sounds lifted from a classical piece of which I forgot the name and it's pretty cool, but it's only when the riff breaks loose that you really recognise just what a monster you have here. The vocals are awesome as well, especially when they go a little into the realm of screams. Generally, this is a frantic, high-energetic piece of music all the way through, and it is one of the best of its kind. A full 10 points to you, good sir.
Final standings
27 points: lonestar, Sigz
28 points: wolfking, WindMaster
30 points: Elite, ariich, Nekov
31 points: UMH
As you can see, this was fucking close in the end - four measly points seperate the winner from those in last place, so once again, you were all awesome.
And by a smidgen of a hair, the whole roulette goes to...

Congrats bro, you're awesome. You can feel good about yourself now, or something. :P
That's it, I think. Once again, thank you and peace out.

Incura's singer is a guy, though an understandable mistake. All there stuff is on Soundcloud, and they rock beginning to end, just amazing.

Whoops. :lol :lol
-
I won't say anything to him though, ok?
-
Thanks. :tup
-
Glad I redeemed myself again at the end, perfectly content to make joint second place, but shame UMH did just enough to cling on! :P
If you liked that song, then you'll have to check out the album Silent Machine! There are a couple of songs that aren't all that interesting, but it's a bonkers album and really very, very enjoyable.
Cheers for running such a fun roulette!

Thank you Iter Impius, you never fail me for getting people to check out Pain of Salvation.
Thanks for the roulette as well, it has been a fun ride and congrats to the winner.
