Back in 2004 when the Spock's Beard message board was my primary hangout online, that huge Tsunami hit in Indonesia and I had an idea. There were a lot of musicians on that board, just like this place. I posted a thread with the same title as this one: What If...? And the question was simple. What if all of the musicians here donated a song and we put them together on a CD and we sold the CD and then donated the proceeds to the Red Cross to help with Tsunami relief?
Well, the project really kind of took off from there. Read here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tsunami_Projekt (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tsunami_Projekt)
At the time I was hooked up with a dude and we called ourselves "Split Personality" and we came up with the song that I ended up calling..."What If..." You can listen to that track here:

I'm not crazy about the fake drums, but the point was to quickly come up with some tunes that could be put on a CD and sold. And the project did quite well. We made $10k in profit and sent it off to the Red Cross.
It was during that time that I made some pretty decent connections with the guys in Spock's Beard, and Neal Morse, and Mark McCrite and the guys and gals from Izz, and IQ etc. So we ended up with a double CD that was quite an eclectic mix of music and we all got to rub elbows with and appear on the same album with some semi-notable musicians from the prog community. All in all it was a pretty fun time.
So, today, I was thinking.....What If...? What if THIS community did something similar for the victims of the massacre in Connecticut? We've got a bunch of talented people here, and I'm pretty sure I could use my contacts to get some of the people who were down with The Tsunami Projekt to get on board with this thing.
So, before I get ahead of myself here, let's just see if there's genuine interest in getting something going.
So, what do you think, DTF?

It would be a great, great thing to do. Money can't ease the pain those families are living in now, but to have a physical token of the sympathy of so many might move something. It's a good idea, Barry :)
-
It's not about the money, it's about the expression of support. I thought it would be cool if all of the songs were of an uplifting mood/message.
If there's enough interest here, I'm perfectly willing to use my contacts to get it properly mixed/mastered, etc....and I'll handle registering a domain name, setting up a website, setting up shopping cart, etc. But again, I don't want to get too far ahead. We'd need a minimum of, I think 60 minutes of original music. We'd want to have at least a couple of notable folks involved. I'm pretty sure I can get Neal Morse to give us a song, probably IQ and Izz as well......we'd have to finance quite a bit of the effort with pre-sale funds. That's how we did the last one.

That's exactly my point. It's about support, about saying that even if we live on the far sides of the world, we can be with them, we can say a friendly word to them.
We are a Dream Theater board, I would be surprised if we made no attempt to involve someone from the band or from the band's past into this project. After all, it's not just you who has his contacts ;)

I'm in to record something and I'm sure my band will be with me.
-
I could contribute by pre-ordering. Unfortunately that is about it.
-
I am not a musician, so that would be the only thing I could do.
-
Though musically worthless, I am willing to help in any way possible.
-
I am happy to spread the word and ask some other prog-musicians...
Great initiative Barry!
-
I don't think my songs would be acceptable.
-
Well, the thread is here, maybe I should change the subject line though, eh?
-
OK, edited the subject line.....
-
Ooh, interesting. I'm sure it might be possible to do a sort of guitar/guzheng thing with my friend David for this if you like (although it may be a month or so before we get it done).
-
Good idea. Maybe I could do some drumming if prog drumming like MM and MP isn't obligatory :D
-
I would help, but A) I'm a horrible singer and B) don't think I could write a positive vibed up lifting instrumental.
-
I think we'd probably be looking for stuff that's already produced, or could be easily produced in a short period of time. When we did The Tsunami Projekt it was about 6 weeks from conception to shipping the CDs.
-
Oh, well in that case you still lost me at the positive vibe up lifting part. :(
Sadly all the music I write is either depressing or cinematic. Sorry. Would have been cool though.
-
Kirk,
That's a great idea and a wonderful offer.
Cool, man. :tup

Same here.
-
Awesome idea.
-
Makes me wish I still had decent (or any) recording equipment.
-
Yeah, I don't think it will fly here, but it was a nice thought.
-
So, how is this going to go? Like I said, I'm definitely up to contribute something, but then I need to know what I need to do when. I really like the idea, so I'd also be willing to help with some stuff other than only recording my part.
-
Well, Elite, we have you and me so far as far as potential songs go. For this to really be worth pursuing we need quite a bit more interest.
-
I've got songs out the ass, I just don't have a solid method for recording them.
-
I don't think my songs would be acceptable.
-
I have no solid way of recording either.
-
Looks like the only practical thing to do is rent out Bear Track Studio for a couple weeks and everyone gets together there.
-
Unfortunately my band is recording through a laptop at the moment....and we play grindcore, so I don't feel like we'd be a good match, but I do love the idea!
-
I could maybe do a drum track from some ideas which I have in my head that I'm trying to feed my bandmates with but they say it's too complicated for them (although it's just some basic 5/4 and 9/8 ), so maybe I could create some structured "drum song" and upload it, then you'd do whatever you please with it...... will think about tabbing it in the next days......
-
I'd love to be part of this. Some friends and I will be recording soon. I think that this is a good idea.

I'd be interested in hearing something like this, and maybe throwing down a rough live take of a guitar track on my webcam or whatever. Just for fun, obviously. Unless we had some way to pay for it to be professionally recorded/mixed/mastered, I can't see this getting very far though.

Sure ;)
I thought maybe I could "write" this song down in Guitar Pro, with all the fills and rhythms......there are also some gadgets that make the composition sound pretty real, so that could be a good improvisation......
-
I think I had some lyrics lying around somewhere that would kinda fit. I'll see if I can find them - otherwise, that's all I got as well, 'cause I don't have a way of recording either, though I'd definitely buy the CD, of course!
-
I'm going to put forward this idea at my band practice this afternoon and I have most of the holidays to write something, so from my side, I'm fairly sure I could make it work.
-
I've got a couple of proggy demo's around here. If anyone is interested to hear them, I'd be totally willing to send them. Maybe this could finally be that nudge I've needed to finish the songs. (One is already a 15 minute epic though, haha)
Other than that, I'd be very much into just contributing keys to anyones tracks.
-
How about you and me doing something together? I'd be up for that! :)
-
Yeah, totally! Do you have some sort of demo's of your band, or personal demo's?
-
Yeah, I do have some rough recordings of my band's material, but they're not really suitable I guess, since they're either all parts of different ideas and concepts or they don't have a specific 'uplifting message'. Also, if I were to do one of those, I would use my band's keyboard player, because they're also partly his songs :P
As for personal demos, I don't have a lot. I was thinking of making something new altogether if this idea goes through.
