Rules
I will score you a maximum of 10 points each round. On themed rounds you will be scored a maximum of 6 points on song quality and the remaining 4 will be given towards round theme relevance. On open rounds there will be no round relevance category, so up to the full 10 points will be given for song quality.

I will generally accept only YouTube and Spotify links. No MP3s please. If you can’t find your song on YouTube, then check Spotify. If you can’t find it there, contact me via PM and we’ll work something out.
You can send only 1 song per round. If I have heard the song you first submit, then I will give you only one more chance to submit a song that I don’t know for that round. If you can’t manage that, you will not receive a score that round. In the rare case (yes, it has happened) that two people submit the same song in one round, the person that sends me that song first (according to forum clocks, USA EST) will get scored on it. The other person will get another chance to submit a song.

Round 1 is an OPEN round

The deadline is Wednesday the 19th of December at 23:59. Cool? Cool.

I don't really have a preference of song length, but I'd suggest you keep it under 10 minutes. Also, I apologize in advance for my unresponsiveness. I am a high school student and this week is the last before my break, so I may not have time to post results in a timely manner until after X-Mas.

BRING IT.

I do not see ANY point in bumping a thread like this one after only just over 12 hours of non-activity. There's even less point in bumping it after that. Threads don't really disappear from DTF's front page, they remain there for a couple of days, so why should you get them to the top?

Round 1 Results!!

Great first round, guys.

Lolzeez: Ayeron – Day Two: Isolation
Incredibly interesting and proggy piece of music. Part of a concept album, I assume? Anyway, but Ayeron just sounds like a pretty generic prog rock/metal band. I did like the trade off singing which was used pretty well in this song but can butcher others. Unfortunately, that was pretty much the only thing I liked apart from the heavy guitar parts. This song didn’t really do that much for me. 4/10

YtseBitsySpider: Times Of Grace – Live In Love
I enjoyed this song enough, the verses with the harsh vocals were definitely the high point. But the clean vocals by the lead singer weren’t the best thing ever, in fact, I liked the backup singer’s (Glasses guy) clean vocals a lot more than the lead singer’s. But that aside, it’s a pretty generic metal tune, and not that outstanding to listen to, and doesn’t prompt me to check out any of this band’s other music. 4.5/10

Crazyaga: Jeff Buckely – Mojo Pin
I thought the song was cool for the most part, but there really wasn’t much to it. However, I especially liked the heavy part near the end, which really stood out and was really cool. The vocals weren’t all that great though, his voice seemed a bit too ‘breathy’ to me. Decent submission. Nothing really makes it for me, but nothing breaks it either. 5/10

PuffyPat: The Mars Volta – Cotopaxi
This song was pretty good, and pretty damn complicated, one of the most technically advanced songs sent to me this round. I definitely liked this song because of that. The vocals were also pretty sweet, this singer has a great range. His voice did seem to get whiny at some points though. Good submission. 6/10

Nekov: Dredg – Ode To The Sun
I’ve heard of this band before but never got around to checking them out. This song is good. They sound fairly similar to Fair To Midland, which was cool. The song didn’t really catch my attention all that much, but I still enjoyed listening to it. Good submission. I will probably also be checking out some Dredg in the future because I liked some of the other tracks on the album, but this track isn’t incredibly remarkable. 6/10

Heretic: The Mayan Factor – Jack Nicholson
This is a pretty mellow piece of music, but if you listen to the lyrics, they’re really depressing and, I have to admit, a little creepy. Great mellow guitar work on this one and I really liked the vocals. Once the drums came in, it was pretty confusing and mixed up because my mind couldn’t tell whether the feel was supposed to be a waltz or not, and it’s still hard to tell, but that is something I loved about this piece. Great submission! I also listened to some of their other stuff and quite enjoyed it, so I’ll add these guys to my list of bands to check out. 7/10

Elite: Devin Townsend – Kingdom
I’ve actually tried to check out Devin in the past, but nothing ever did it for me. This song is definitely an exception, however. The vocals are soaring, the music is really really heavy, which is awesome and always a plus. I especially like the “hey, hey” part at the start, and when he starts to sing deeper and more toward a mix between a clean vocal and a growl, it just adds so much. Awesome. I will most definitely be checking out more of his work in the future. 9/10

Scorpion: Diablo Swing Orchestra – A Tap Dancer’s Dillema.
Excellent submission! I don’t know if you guys know this but as a youtube user mentioned in the comments, this is a loose arrangement/remix of “Sing, Sing, Sing,” which is an old swing tune. Add the guitars and the excellent vocals, you get this great piece of music. I especially loved the drumbeat at the start, the “how low can you go” vocal line, and the trombones and brass in general are a nice touch. Also, the bass playing is insane! There isn’t really anything I didn’t like about this piece. 10/10

If anyone wants to check out “Sing, Sing, Sing,” I’d highly recommend it, as there is an extremely commendable drum solo in the middle.

Overall a pretty good round, I’m pretty impressed.

Point Standings
Scorpion: 10
Elite: 9
Heretic: 7
Nekov: 6
PuffyPat: 6
Crazyaga: 5
YtseBitsySpider: 4.5
Lolzeez: 4

Congrats to everyone for sending music. Try to send your music by the deadline next time. Oh, and make me happy.

Round 2 theme:
Winter
It sure doesn't feel like winter where I am, so send me songs that make me feel like winter. Gogogogo.

Deadline is Sunday at some time of day. I have no idea when. Just send your songs in by sunday or I actually will disqualify someone for this round.
If I had to pick a time when your results would be in, I would say wednesday of next week.

Hm... a wintery song? Damn, I don't really have music for certain moods. I'll have to do some digging...

EDIT: Not sure how this will fare, but since my gut feeling landed me a high score in the first round, I'll send it anyway.

ROUND 2 RESULTS!!

Good round guys. A couple incredible gems and a couple misses, but it's alright, there are other rounds to make it up!

YtseBitsySpider: Badlands – Winter’s Call
Well well well… 80’s hair metal. Not a genre I like at all and this song was no exception unfortunately. Thematically it was fine, as a portion of the lyrics were about winter (however, the song did not have a very wintery feel), but the music and the rest of the lyrics were pretty atrocious, not to mention the video was a cheesefest. Sorry, dude, but I just really didn’t like it.
Theme: 3/ 4
Song: 1/6
Total: 4/10

 Lolzeez: Genesis – Snowbound
Genesis is a prog band, and this is kind a prog ballad song, I guess you could call it. I did like it somewhat, however, and it definitely fit the theme. I liked the chorus a lot and it was probably my favorite, but the song didn’t really change a lot. It was pretty same-y throughout, which really doesn’t cut it.
Theme: 3.5/4
Song 2/6
Total 5.5/10

Crazyaga: Do Make Say Think - Fredericia
I quite liked this song. It started out very mellow and gradually progressed into a faster light and airy riff that was really awesome. The buzzing guitar that enters around the 5 minute mark adds another layer which really made the song great. This song didn’t remind me of winter exactly though. But a pretty good song nonetheless.
Theme: 2/4
Song: 4/6
Total: 6/10

PuffyPat: A Great Big Pile Of Leaves – Drought of Snow
Hmm… I’ve heard of AGBPOF before, as I know a lot of people on this forum are familiar with them, but I’ve never heard them before now. This song was pretty incredible and I really liked it. The addition of brass in this song was quite cool. Although this song didn’t change a lot, it was quite catchy. Thematically it was fine. The song didn’t have a cold feel, but the lyrics were about snow so I guess that counts for something. I’ll definitely be checking these guys out some more.
Theme: 2/4
Song: 5/6
Total: 7/10

Elite: Wolves In The Throne Room – Dia Artio
This song was described as ambient black metal, and that’s kinda accurate, but it seems to be missing the black metal aspect of it. It’s a long, slowed down and drawn out piece of music and very clearly gives me a feeling of winter. It makes me just want to lie down and chill out and listen to this. It fit the theme incredibly well, but didn’t work too well as a song. I liked it ok.
Theme: 4/4
Song: 3/6
Total: 7/10

Nekov: God Is An Astronaut – Snowfall
This song was incredibly cold and empty and I really liked that feel. However, it didn’t really well as an instrumental. Some of the parts I felt like needed vocals, but the last couple minutes worked fine, in fact, the piano riff was one of the best parts of the whole thing. Overall I liked this song a lot, but it could have used a little vocal improvement.
Theme: 4/4
Song: 4/6
Total: 8/10

Scorpion: Wintersun – Sadness and Hate
I’ll start off by saying this song has a definite wintery feel to it. The song itself was also excellent, albeit a little long. This sounds like power-prog with black metal influences and the genres are mixed very well. The singer is quite talented, his screams and clean vocals are both very good. I definitely liked this song, and I will probably check out this band in the future. Great submission.
Theme: 4/4
Song: 4.5/6
Total: 8.5/10

Heretic: Ulver – Soelen Gaaer Bag Aase Need
First off, I love me some good Norwegian black metal any day and this was no exception. My favorite part of this song was the 6/8 feel with the clean singing, although I loved the rest of it very much. To me, black metal is the very embodiment of winter: bleak, cold, and desolate. This song fit the theme very well and was also an incredible piece of music. I’ll definitely be checking out more by this band. Awesome
Theme: 4/4
Song: 6/6
Total: 10/10

The standings
Scorpion: 18.5
Heretic: 17
Elite: 16
Nekov: 14
PuffyPat: 13
Crazyaga: 11
Lolzeez: 9.5
YtseBitsySpider: 8.5

Good round.

Next round's deadline will be whenever you can get it in, because I know a lot of you have the holidays to deal with.
This round's theme will be:

Heavy & Brutal

Pretty self explanatory.

Special Condition: The heaviest and most brutal of the bunch will get an extra 2 points no matter how much I like it or not.

Post by: Elite on December 24, 2012, 03:54:05 PM
The rest of the album very clearly is black metal, if you ever want to check it out, the song I sent was basically the album intro. Also regarding next round's thema; fuck yes, I already know what to send, but I'll have to be at a computer first. Expect it tomorrow.

Aw hell yeah! While not the heaviest, one of my favorite metal songs ever. One of the first metal "Epics" ever. Not too long though.

I'm really anxious, actually. My song either scored really high or really low, I doubt there's much middle ground here...

ROUND 3 RESULTS

Many thanks for being patient on this one guys. Sorry it took so much time.

Lolzeez: Black Sabbath – N. I. B
Ah, Black Sabbath. I suppose I should have put this band on my banned bands list, as I’m pretty familiar with their stuff. I’m not familiar with this song, however, so I decided to let it slide. This song was fine, but there wasn’t much to say about it. It was repetitive and the vocals in the verse were exactly replicating the guitar part, something I can’t stand. It also didn’t fit the theme very well because, while being a metal song, it wasn’t heavy or brutal. Sorry.
Theme 1/4
Song: 3/6
Total 4/10

PuffyPat: Sepultura – Convicted In Life
Another band I’ve heard of but haven’t checked out. This song was pretty brutal. It definitely had variety, however, it wasn’t just brutalness. I really think that’s what made it a great song and I liked it. The drum intro was incredibly sick.
Theme: 3/4
Song 3.5/6
Total 6.5/10

YtseBitsySpider: Devil Driver - End of the Line
This was straight up death metal, which is something that I like. This song was pretty cool and I liked it. However, it wasn’t very memorable. It was definitely brutal, so you get theme points for that. I liked it, but there isn’t much to say about it. Cool song.
Theme 3.5/4
Song 3/6
Total 6.5/10

Scorpion: Sleep Terror – Prodromal Nocturia
I’ll start off by saying that the blast beats in this song were among the fastest I’ve ever heard. It was awesome. Anyway, this song, while being really good, wasn’t that brutal mostly because it didn’t have vocals, and I really think they make metal songs even more brutal. Parts of it were heavy however, so props for that. I especially enjoyed the jazz part, however far away from the theme it may be. Cool song.
Theme 2/4
Song 5/6
Total 7/10

Elite: Lykathea Aflame – Bringer of Elvenefris Flame
This was no doubt a brutal song, and was pretty good, but the production was crappy. I don’t know if it was Youtube or not, but the snare drum sounds like a timpani drum or maybe he had the snare turned off or whatever, but anyway, it didn’t sound good. I’m not usually not bitchy about production, but here it really got on my nerves and made the song hard to enjoy. Anyway, aside from the production, the song was pretty good. The vocals were totally unintelligible, but that’s ok, it’s the thought that counts. And that made it even more brutal, so that’s pretty cool.
Theme 4/4
Song 3/6
Total 7/10

Nekov: Vintersorg – Jöklen
I really liked this one. It mixed brutal black metal vocals with nice clean singing, but for the most part, it had the brutal vocals, which sounded great. The only con I can see to this song is that for the most part it wasn’t very memorable, just a regular black metal song, a style that I love, but nothing really stands out.
Theme 4/4
Song 4.5/6
Total 8.5/10

Crazyaga: Strapping Young Lad – All Hail the New Flesh
This song is right up there with Heretic’s for most brutal. Not only were the vocals brutal, but the music was incredibly heavy. The lyrics (or what I could hear of them, anyway), were pretty cheesy with lots of profanity, which I didn’t like all that much. Not that it offends me, but it seemed really unnecessary. But I really did like rest of the song. Lyrics were a turn off, but yeah, great song.
Theme 4/4
Song 4/6
Total 8/10

Heretic: Converge – Trespasses
I’ve heard of Converge, and even checked them out briefly, but I haven’t heard this song. In any case, this was 3 minutes of pretty sweet music. It was heavy and brutal, but not so that it was unlistenable. The main riff was the best part and I also liked it when he screamed “burn at both ends.” It also sounded a ton like Kvelertak, and I really love them, that's another reason why I loved this one.
Theme 4/4
Song 6/6
Total 10/10

Most Brutal:
Crazyaga's submission of All Hail the New Flesh by Strapping Young Lad wins this! Congrats!

The standings:
Heretic: 27
Scorpion: 25.5
Nekov: 24.5
Elite: 23
Crazyaga: 19 (+2)=21
PuffyPat 19.5
YtseBitsySpider: 15
Lolzeez: 13.5

Next round will be an Open Round, mostly because I have no idea of a theme.
Deadline is Saturday at 23:59 Eastern states time.

Glad you kind of liked Lykathea Aflame. I agree on the snare dums sound being weird, but it doesn't bother me at all. I think it's a very conscious decision, considering the whole album sounds like it. tbh; I haven't actually listened to the youtube version I sent you, because I have the album on CD and I love it.

ROUND 4 RESULTS!

Crazyaga: Swans – Helpless Child
This is a song I liked, but hell, it was long. It was really chill and is something I would listen to as background music (which isn’t a bad thing).  There isn’t much to say about this song, because there isn’t much going on. But that's because this song seems like it was written to be relaxing. Pretty good. Only complaint was that there wasn’t enough going on to fill the incredibly long 15 minute piece but I liked it well enough. A note to everyone: remember that the time limit is 10 minutes for songs.
6/10

YtseBitsySpider: Ozric Tentacles – White Rhino Tea
This was a pure prog song, a genre that I used to listen to but find myself steering away from in recent years. This song was pretty cool however and it brought back memories of when I used to exclusively listen to this kind of music. Pretty good song and technically impressive and there were some parts I really liked. Good submission, but I don’t expect to be listening to more prog anytime soon.
7/10

Lolzeez: King Crimson – 21st Century Schizoid Man
More prog. I liked this one more than Ozric Tentacles though. The main riffs were quite cool and I liked the vocals (although vocal distortion isn’t my thing it seemed to fit in this song). The only complains I have were that the ending of the song got on my nerves a bit and the wankyness level of the solo was really high. Definitely better than your previous submissions!
7.5/10

Scorpion: Luna Mortis – Ash
I remember checking out this album a while ago, but I sure didn’t remember until now and I don’t remember the music. This song was really good. I’m impressed with the vocalist; if she’s doing the growls too, than it’s the first female growl I’ve liked. It sounds a bit like her, but I really don’t know. Tell me if you do! Anyway, this was a really good melodeath song. I will definitely check out the rest of this album, as sadly, it is the only one Luna Mortis has made.
8.5/10

Nekov: Mastodon – Aqua Dementia
I’ve heard a ton of good things about mastodon and even checked out The Hunter passively a couple times. This was a great song. The drummer is very good and I liked the vocals although I thought it could use some clean singing here and there to spice it up. Cool riffing and great song. I will probably check out more from this band because I really like what I hear
9/10

Heretic: Twelve Foot Ninja – Deluge
This was a cool song. Had a pretty awesome pseudo-reggae feel at the beginning and quickly progressed into a really awesome heavy chorus. I loved this piece. I usually don’t like this kind of feel (upbeat bluesy pseudoreggae) in music but here it was used really well. The chorus was definitely the high point and a great contrast to the quieter verses. The scream at the end was perfect.
9/10

Elite: The Dear Hunter – Red Hands
I really liked the vocals (although on this song, I might have heard some autotune). This song was really good, not as good as Cauda Venenum, but they hardly sound the same at all. I really liked the part after the “get to work;” it was probably my favorite part of the song. Again, not quite as good as Cauda Venenum, but awesome nonetheless.
9.5/10

PuffyPat: The Dear Hunter – Cauda Venenum
I’ve heard of the Dear Hunter before. Never checked them out. That’s going to change now. This song was just incredible. I loved every second of it. Most of all, however, I really liked the vocalist. This song also had a feel that made me want to dance and that was cool. The handdrums were an awesome addition. Awesome submission!
10/10

Best round yet, guys! Keep it up!

The standings:

Heretic: 36
Nekov: 34.5
Scorpion: 34
Elite: 32.5
PuffyPat 29.5
Crazyaga: 27
YtseBitsySpider: 22
Lolzeez: 21

ROUND 5 THEME: Colors: Send me a song with a color named in the title. GO!

Deadline is Wednesday at 7pm EST. I go back to school this week so it might be hard for me to give you results depending on how much work I get. Send it in on time and I can assure you results friday if not earlier.

I consider Helpless Child to be one of the most amazing songs ever, and I dont find it relexing at all. its unsetting as fuck, with massive intensity. I wouldnt listen to it as a background music.
I also think it worth every second of its 15 minutes. but oh well. opinions are opinions.

A couple of questions before sending:

- Does it have to contain a colour in the song title, or can it be in the album title or name of the artist as well?
- Can a song just contain the word 'color(s)' or 'colour' without having an actual one in the title?
- Are black and white colours?

I'm assuming the answer to the first two is NO and to the third is YES, but I want to be sure :)

Agreed. The songs in my library were all by good bands, but they weren't close to their best songs, and wouldn't fair well as roulette submissions.

Challenging isn't always a bad thing, though. It's how you thin out the horde and find the true champion among the ranks.

Round 5 Results!

PuffyPat: The White Stripes – Black Math
I probably should have put this band on my not-to-send list, but I forgot because I don’t own any of their stuff (I’ve heard most of it however) and there’s a reason I don’t own their albums. I don’t like this band. It probably has something to do with a) the incredible simplicity of the drums and guitar and b) Jack White’s voice. Their music is actually too simple for me to stay interested in it. Plus, the production on this album is horrible (a minor gripe I suppose). So obviously I didn’t like this song. It’s not really your fault, you just happened to send me a band I detest that I forgot to put on my list. So I suppose it’s my fault. Sorry, and better luck next round.
Theme 4/4
Song 1/6 (only because I have enough of a heart not to give a zero)
Total: 5/10

Crazyaga: Boards of Canada – Turquoise Hexagon Sun
There isn’t a lot to say about this one at all. This was a really chill electronic piece that hardly had anything going on - and I have to admit it was kind of a reprieve from what I usually listen to. It was very relaxing, but I wouldn’t listen to this all the time. Mr. Fox here told me not to listen to it as background music, and I tried not to, but it automatically faded into the background when I listened to it. But I enjoyed it for what it was.
Theme 4/4
Song 2/6
Total 6/10

YtseBitsySpider: Memphis May Fire – Red in Tooth & Claw
This is pure modern metalcore. Not really on the technical side, it was basically metalcore with pop sensabilities (in the vocal melodies mostly). It also had some pretty awesome djent-style riffing. I did like this song, but it seemed like generic modern metalcore. I do enjoy this genre somewhat though, and this song was pretty good. My favorite part was the ritard at the end and the djent-y breakdown. Cool song, but not that memorable.
Theme 4/4
Song 3.5/6
Total: 7.5/10

Lolzeez: Camel – Nimrodel/The Procession/The White Rider
More classic prog. I freaking love Tolkien’s books, and this song was a pretty cool homage to his work. Again, this isn’t a genre I listen to very much at all because I’ve moved past it, but it’s nice to hear it sometimes. Some cool synth work on this one, and the vocals were cool. Kind of boring with the length and all, but it was a cool song anyway.
Theme 4/4
Song 3.5/6
Total 7.5/10

Nekov: Frost* - Black Light Machine
Silly me. I thought Frost* was an instrumental band. :lol Anyway, the vocal intro to this song was really cool and I liked the electronic stuff thrown in in a pinch. I was kinda iffy on the electronic part that seemed to go on for a long time until a really awesome lead guitar came in and relieved my imminent boredom. Then the drums did a really sick fill, cut out and the song was left with just the lead. This was my favorite part of the whole song. However the whole piece was very synthetic sounding, one of the last parts being all electronic synth stuff. I usually don’t like that in songs, but this part was really cool. All in all, great submission
Theme: 4/4
Song 4/6
Total 8/10

Scorpion: Redemption – Black and White World
I liked this one. A nice, cold-sounding piece of prog metal. You could’ve sent this one for the winter round and gotten full theme marks. The piano intro was really awesome and some of the rhythms they used were really awesome and messed with my heard. Unfortunately, the singer is singing in that typical prog metal style of operatic vocals, something that I don’t like about the genre. However, on this song, it wasn’t as bad as some bands can be in that area. Great stuff.
Theme 4/4
Song 4.5/6
Total 8.5/10

Elite: Seventh Wonder – The Black Parade
More prog metal. It was seemed heavier than the song Scorpion sent me, but maybe that was the audio quality. Anyway, I liked this fine. It was complicated enough so that I didn’t get bored of it, and I really liked the vocal melodies. However, like I said in Scorp’s writeup, it had that prog metal vocal style, which gets on my nerves a lot, but again, this band isn’t as bad about it as some are. Great song, I liked it I lot.
Theme 4/4
Song 4.5/6
Total 8.5/10

Heretic: Right Away Great Captain! – Devil Dressed in Blue
This was so different from the other submissions, and it was awesome. It was completely acoustic and it was one guy doing everything. I loved the lyrics. It sounds a ton like Neutral Milk Hotel on their album In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, especially the vocal style. I loved that. I will definitely be checking out more of his stuff.
Theme 4/4
Song 5/6
Total 9/10

This round was nowhere near as good as previous rounds, but that may have been partially my fault because of the theme I picked. Better luck next round.  :)
Due to the songs not really being judge-able on theme points this round (you either got the points or you didn't), next round with a theme like this the songs will be judged purely on song quality.

The standings:

Heretic: 45
Nekov: 42.5
Scorpion: 42.5
Elite: 41
PuffyPat 34.5
Crazyaga: 33
YtseBitsySpider: 29.5
Lolzeez: 28.5

Nekov and Scorpion are tied! WHO'S GOING PULL AHEAD NEXT ROUND!?!?! Exciting!

Next round's theme will be Acoustic.
Send me a song without electric instruments. Deadline will be Sunday at 23:59 eastern time.... And I will take away two points from your score if you send it in late! It's quite annoying when that happens.

Either way, sent!

Round 6 Results!!!!

Nekov: Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, Paco de Lucia – Guardian Angel (live)
Another Al DiMeola song! I must say that I liked Scorpion’s submission better than this one, mostly because that one featured a lot less guitar wankery and more structure. Here the guitar was way to wanky for my tastes. It just seemed too drawn out and really didn’t hold my attention. I know this was the only acoustic song you had in your library and had you had more, I know you would’ve sent me something better.
5/10

Ytse: Machine Head – The Darkness Within
This is a pretty cool acoustic rock piece. Nothing folky about this one, it’s just a rock song done acoustically. I liked the lyrics and the fan made video was really cool and fit the song. Anyway, I liked it but there isn’t much more to say than it was a cool piece. I did think the singer would be better suited to singing on a heavier song, but that’s kind of a minor gripe.
6/10
-2 for lateness
4/10

Elite: Magic Pie – Endless Ocean
Pretty good acoustic pop song by a prog metal band, but nothing special. Honestly, there is hardly anything to say about this one. There isn’t much to the song at all. The vocals sounded like something Styx would do and I really don’t like that much. This was really forgettable unfortunately. I did like it somewhat, but the vocals were definitely the low point. I liked the vocal melodies for most of the song though.
6.5/10

PuffyPat: The Mountain Goats – No Children
I just looked up this band on Wikipedia and found out they are based in my area and I think they’ve opened for my favorite local band (The Old Ceremony) a couple times, but I’ve never seen them. Anyway, this was a great song. A nice indie rock piece, it had a cool 6/8 feel and had a great vocal melody in the bridge and throughout the song. I really liked this one. Great submission.
8/10

Scorpion: Al DiMeola – Mediterranean Sundance
This song had some pretty sick Spanish style guitar riffing (or Mediterranean I guess lol) and it’s obvious this guy knows his guitar. He’s incredibly talented and in this song he’s all over the place. This song is really technical while still maintaining melody and structure, so it’s not so technical that it’s unlistenable. Really cool song, and a bit of different folky flavor, which I like a lot.
8/10

Crazyaga: Radiohead – Last Flowers
This was a good song. Radiohead is definitely better at making acoustic songs than some other bands sent to me this round. This piece seemed really sad (I couldn’t really hear the lyrics, so I don’t know for sure) and that added to the acoustic slow-song atmosphere. I would definitely listen to this song if I’m depressed or something. I liked it a lot.
8/10

Heretic: Nick Drake – From the Morning
Cool song, and some of the most beautiful lyrics ever. I liked this one because it was really relaxed, perfect for an acoustic song. And as I said, some of the most beautiful and moving lyrics I’ve ever heard. Cool guitar work on this one, and his voice was great.
8.5/10

Lolzeez: Neil Young – Heart of Gold
I’ve heard of Neil Young. Who hasn’t? This was good. Not entirely acoustic (I think I heard a little electric guitar in there), but it doesn’t matter. The highlight of this song was the harmonica, and damn, it was awesome. Added with the twangs of the not-so-acoustic guitar, it made the song really chill and fun to listen to. The vocals were also really good. I liked it a lot. Don't get discouraged, dude, I know that you can send some good stuff if you really think about it.
8.5/10

The standings.

Heretic: 53.5
Scorpion: 50.5
Nekov: 47.5
Elite: 47.5
PuffyPat 42.5
Crazyaga: 41
Lolzeez: 37
YtseBitsySpider: 33.5

Heads up: there are only two rounds left. Time to bring out the big guns, yes?
Just FYI for the last round: I will be running a wager point system for the last round (round 8). More to come on that at the end of next round, but basically, you can wager up to all of your points and I will rank songs 1-8. The top 4 will gain their wager and the bottom 4 will lose their wager. I'm telling you now in case you wanted to save something special for the last round. theseoafs came up with/used this system and I stole it from him. I should probably give him credit.

Anyway, the next round's (7) theme will be:

New To The Scene

Send me a song from a band that is rather new and has only one album (or two albums, if it comes to that)

Deadline: Friday @ 23:59 Eastern Time. Don't forget that there is a 2 point penalty for lateness. Let's get to it.

Glad you liked the song. They're one of my favorite bands, and John Darnielle (the singer) is my favorite songwriter. He writes in a very poetic way, and the way he delivers the words really helps show how good of a writer he is.

EDIT: SENT. Cautiously optimistic for this round.

The lyrics of Last Flowers: (its about drug addiction)

Appliances have gone berserk
I cannot keep up
Treading on people's toes
Snot-nosed little punk

And I can't face the evening straight
You can't offer me escape
Houses move and houses speak
If you take me there you'll get relief
Relief, relief, relief...

And if I'm gonna talk
I just wanna talk
Please don't interrupt
Just sit back and listen

'cause I can't face the evening straight
You can't offer me escape
Houses move and houses speak
If you take me there you'll get relief
relief, relief, relief, relief, relief...

It's too much
Too bright
Too powerful

Too much
Too bright
Too powerful

Too much
Too bright
Too powerful

ROUND 7 RESULTS!!

Lolzeez: Dean Watson – Past Present
This was some pretty chill Jazz fusion piece, but it was more electronic then most jazz fusion I’ve heard. I liked it ok, but it didn’t seem to be going anywhere. It just when on and on doing mostly the same stuff. It changed parts, but most of the parts weren’t more or less interesting than the last part. Also, as one youtube commenter said, “The percussion is positively amateurish.” This person is right. The drums bored me a lot. I guess because he programmed them. Anyway, this wasn’t a song that really managed to hold my attention all that much.
6.5/10

PuffyPat: Ambassadors – Falls
This song opened strong with a very cool riff and a driving beat. This is some great indie/alt rock right here. It was good while it lasted, but really, it’s not that memorable. I liked it though, the drums especially. They were driving and really fit the song. Cool stuff
7.5/10

Ytse: I Am Abomination – Since 1776
This song was good for what it was, which is pretty much the case fore all other modern metalcore songs. I liked it enough, but didn’t love it. It was as good as the other songs you’ve sent me. This one stands out, however, because of the cool ending orchestral part. I liked that part, and it is something I haven’t heard many of these metalcore bands do.
7.5/10

Nekov: Of Monsters and Men – Little Talks
The thing that really stood out in this song was the female/male interplay on the vocals. The Mumford & Sons influence is really obvious on this track, and that’s awesome, because Mumford & Sons have a really cool sound. I really liked this song. The horns were a really cool addition also. I will be checking out more from this band in the future.
8.5/10

Elite: Ørkenkjøtt – Skygger og Støv (Del II)
I had heard your first submission before, so I listened to this one. I liked it a lot. It sounded a lot like Tool, but Norwegian. Awesome. I have yet to hear one band that i do not like from Norway. This song was not my favorite, however, because I accidently listened to Skygger og Støv (Del I) first and liked it better than Del II, but Del II was still very good. I’ll definitely be checking this whole album out. Cool stuff.
8.5/10

Heretic: Amia Venera Landscape – A New Aurora
I got a real Anathema-ish vibe from the piano part at the beginning of this one (which, according to Spotify is the end of the track before it, Empire) but it quickly descended into a brutal hardcore/post-hardcore piece and then became a soft acoustic verse. The whole thing sounded kind of like Melodic hardcore with a little black metal thrown in. Awesome. A very well done piece of modern metal music. I think the band it most reminded me of was Ne Oblivscaris and I really love them, so this was a great piece. Totally going to check out this album when I get the chance.
9/10

Scorpion: Shattered Skies – Saviors
The first thing that stood out in this song is that the guitarist and bassist aren’t using picks except for the guitarist on his solo and at the very end of the song. They were in fact slapping. And it sounded totally awesome. I really liked this piece and I’d really like to see this band get some more popularity, because they are pretty incredible. My favorite part was the main riff/beat, which was incredibly zesty.
9/10

Crazyaga: *Shels – Butterflies On Luci’s Way
I never knew that music this beautiful and grandiose existed. Anathema comes close, but never as close as this to the pure beauty and expanse that post-rock and post-metal convey. If I had to describe this song, I’d say that it is pure beauty and amazingness turned into sound waves. I loved, loved, LOVED this song and there is no doubt it will listen to more of this band. Honestly, I would give you an 11 if that were possible. The vocals were my favorite part of this song, but everything else was amazing too.
10/10
The Standings:

Heretic: 61.5
Scorpion: 59.5
Nekov: 55.5
Elite: 55.5
Crazyaga: 51
PuffyPat 49.5
Lolzeez: 43.5
YtseBitsySpider: 41

This was probably one of my favorite rounds, guys! Awesome job. Are you ready for the last one?

Round 8
With a deadline on Wednesday @ 23:59, this gives you a full 3 days to submit your song.
When you send your song, tell me how many points you'd like to wager. You can wager up to all of your points.
I will rank songs in places 8 to 1. The top four (1,2,3,4) will win their wager, thereby gaining the number of points they wagered. The bottom four (5,6,7,8) will lose their wager, thereby losing the number of points they wagered.

As for the round theme, this will be an OPEN ROUND.

Woot! First time that I'm not sucking in a roulette. Will think this over thoroughly, don't want to screw up in the last round.

That's because Shattered Skies is an amazing band and I should have thought of sending them too.

Well, on the plus side, the name of your band is far cooler. It's actually the first time that a band name has me madly curious for their music, so I guess that I'll have to check it out. :lol

Also, I have a pretty good idea for the artist to send, I've only got to narrow it down to a song, which might be hard. Expect my submission sometime tonight.

hmmm. I dont understand the whole wager concept.

You have 51 points, so you can wager any number from 1 to 51 points in the next round. If your song is among the Top 4 of the 8 songs sent, then you get the points that you wagered. If you don't, you lose them.

Examples:
a) You wager 25 points and come in at 4th place. You get your 25 points and have 51 + 25 = 76 points in the end.
b) You wager your full 51 points and you just miss the cut, coming in at 5th place. You lose 51 points and have 51- 51 = 0 points in the end.

Clear?

EDIT: Also, sent.

ROUND 8: THE FINAL ROUND

8th Place
PuffyPat: Omar Rodiguez-Lopez Group – My Horror Is In Park, Drive Me Away Troubled Heart
This was kind of not something I usually listen to – it sounded a little like electronic jazz-fusion metal blend thing. But nonetheless I liked it pretty well. The synths here were the strong point along with the drums (that drummer is soooo sick) but other than that it seemed to drag on for the 8 minutes. I usually like instrumental music, but this might have been a bit better with vocals. As a whole, it failed to hold my attention, but I liked the parts that caught my attention.
PuffyPat wagered all of his points, so he ends up with a final score of 0

7th Place
Ytse: Magic Elf – Scrambledreggs
This was a very bluegrass influenced stomp with shreddin guitars, and I really liked it. As you said, the guitar is insane. This is something that people would clog/tap dance to, but I also really liked listening to it. My only complaint is that it was a little too wanky, but being an instrumental and all, I didn’t think it was very over the top, which was good.
Ytse wagered all of his points, so he ends up with a final score of 0

6th Place
Nekov: Sigur Ros – Staralfur
This song started out with a beautiful string and vocal part. The melody was very well written and I enjoyed it immensely. This was pretty much the entirety of the song, so there isn’t much to say except it was really beautiful and I liked it a lot. Possibly not enough substance for me but it was pretty good nonetheless.
Nekov wagered all of his points, so he ends up with a final score of 0

5th Place
Elite: Ben Folds Five – One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces
Something like this isn’t what I expected from you for this last round (I expected something heavy/prog), but this was a great song. The piano playing is obviously the highlight, since there is no guitar in this song – the lead instrument is piano. I thought that was cool. Also he was doing some insane shredding on the thing the whole time. It was awesome. The song was good, not the kind of music I usually listen to, but I did enjoy it a lot.
Elite wagered 55 of his 55.5 points, so he ends up with a score of .5

4th Place
Lolzeez: Focus – Hocus Pocus
I really liked the atmosphere and mood of this one. The vocal part kind of sounded like yodeling style and that was really cool. The vocals were also quite weird. This song was pretty fun to listen to. The instruments were interesting and it managed to hold my attention more than PuffyPat’s submission. Good stuff. I really liked it.
Lolz wagered all of his 43.5 points so he ends up with a grand total of 87.

3rd Place
Crazyaga: Sigur Ros - Viðrar Vel Til Loftárása
This was a very atmospheric and chill post-rock sound. It had a bit more going on then Nekov’s submission and I liked that about it. Video was hella creepy though, with the doll things. Anyway, I really liked the vocals and the melodies in this song, which I assume is one of this band’s many strong suits. The buildup and the climax at the end was really awesome and I loved how the strings dissolved into chaos in the last few seconds. Great stuff.
Crazyaga wagered all of his 51 points, so he ends up with a grand total of 102

2nd Place
Heretic: Hopesfall – The End Of An Era
This song was really cool. It started out sounding like it was going to be a generic metalcore song, but quickly progressed to a something much more awesome. I have to say, the first time he did clean vocals I thought, “the rest of his clean singing is going to be shit,” but that changed with an awesome clean vocal break a little before the incredible buildup, which went evolved an even better climax. Excellent stuff.
Heretic wagered all of his 61.5 points, so he ends up with a grand total of 123

1st Place
Scrop: Ihsahn – On The Shores
As soon as this started, I knew it was going to be awesome. The saxophone was the highlight of this song and when Scrop told me it had sax in it I was a little apprehensive because I thought it wouldn’t mix well with black metal, but it was incredibly awesome. The vocals were also very good, mixing black metal styles with more of a death metal growl. They fit the song very well. I really loved this piece. It was one of the best sent this whole roulette.
Scrop wagered all of his 59.5 points, so he ends up with a grand total of 119

Thanks for playing, y'all. I really enjoyed this and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. I hope we can do this again sometime.

Since Heretic won this roulette (by a mere 4 points!), he is now officially awesome!! Good job, bro.

If anyone is interested, here are the final standings.

0 Points: Ytse, PuffyPat, Nekov
.5 Points: Elite
87 Points: Lolz
102 Points: Crazyaga
119 Points: Scrop
123 Points: Heretic

Thanks to everyone who played!
