Title: Roulette of Champions - FINAL RESULTS, pg 15!
Post by: ariich on December 11, 2012, 02:32:41 PM
Come one, come all, to the Roulette of Champions!

All winners of Song Roulettes were invited to take part. Some could not handle the pressure, and declined to take part. These contestants who have chosen to compete are the hardcore elite. They will be battling for the ultimate glory as Champion of Champions.

The Contestants:
 - Gorille85
 - H
 - Heretic
 - jingle.boy
 - kari
 - kingshmegland
 - Lateralus
 - lonestar
 - Marvellous G
 - Nekov
 - obscure
 - Orcus116
 - Sigz
 - skydivingninja
 - TheVoxyn
 - Ultimetalhead
 - YtseBitsySpider
 - Zantera

The Rules:
 - The judges are me and a mystery second judge, who will remain secret for the duration of the competition. We will each score every song between 0.5 and 4, meaning a score between 1 and 8 per round.
 - Given the number of you buggers, you are only guaranteed a place in the first two rounds. The top half of the group (9 out of 18) will proceed past round 2, the rest will be eliminated.
 - Submit songs by email to dtfrouletteofchamps@gmail.com. These should ideally be mp3s, but Youtube or Grooveshark (or similar) links will also be acceptable.
 - The first round will be open, the others will be themed. Submissions should not only be good, but also fit the theme.
 - Below is a list of forbidden bands. This is mainly to cover some of the most obvious bands because we'd prefer people to be more imaginative. Technically anything not in that list is fine, as long as the song fits the theme.

Forbidden bands:
 - The Dear Hunter
 - Devin Townsend
 - Dream Theater
 - Frost
 - Metallica
 - Muse
 - Opeth
 - Pain of Salvation
 - Pink Floyd
 - Porcupine Tree
 - Rush
 - Transatlantic

One final word of note - I'm not going to be around from the 19th to the 29th December as I will be away for Christmas, so the roulette will be on hold during this time. Apart from that, I will be very much around and more active than I have been recently, so hopefully the roulette will move at a reasonable pace. Do be patient with the first couple of rounds though, there are a LOT of you!

ROUND 1 - OPEN
No theme here, just send anything you think is good, and preferably not something too obvious or well known (and absolutely nothing in the list of forbidden bands).

So that forbidden list is all that's forbidden? So, I could theoretically send stuff that I know you like (like stuff that I sent in your roulette before) and be totally fine?

You could, but that wouldn't be very imaginative, so I might not find it very exciting and therefore may not score it as highly. Also, you've no idea how much the other judge will like it. :P

Post by: TheVoxyn on December 11, 2012, 03:36:52 PM
I hope the mystery judge appreciates things that are not prog or metal, otherwise I'm screwed.

Anyway, I noticed that my favourite band isn't banned so I'll just send that since I have nothing else to go by (tastes show after the first round I guess).

Yeah, he declined as he's really busy.

Due date for the 1st round Rich?
Hmm, no particular cut off yet, as we're just getting started. If submissions are slow I will chase people though. Later rounds will have submission deadlines.

Wow. Uh....wow. No idea what to send. Rich knows all the music I've ever listened to, pretty much. As for the mystery judge...hmmm...might be too soon to speculate, but hefdaddy? Dunno. I'm gonna have to find a good song.

If your library, Rich, is up to date, then you haven't listened to this group. Sending.

This should be fun. I guess it's not Bosk after all
Title: Re: Roulette of Champions
Post by: Ħ on December 11, 2012, 03:59:48 PM
Hm...it could be bosk. But he hasn't been around that much of late.

Just looking at the list, it's crazy how many DTF regulars on in this competition. I know of all the people in the contest, and am aware of maybe 75% of the type of music each listens to. This gunna be intense.

EDIT: Sent in a music group that's somewhat known on DTF, but it's not in Rich's last.fm so I'm banking on him (or the mystery judge) not knowing them.

I have determined beyond reasonable doubt the identity of the mystery judge. I retract all my previous guesses. I am 95% confident that it is who I think it is.

The answer is in Ariich's posts. He inadvertently left a MAJOR clue. This clue narrows it down to a...certain class of individuals. And if you're familiar with the musical tastes of the members of that class, you'll know who is most likely to write brutal reviews.

PM me if you want to know...

You all failed this round.  I didn't like a single one of them.  Except for the one and only song that came in under 5:00.  A winner is you.

WOOHOO!

RESULTS – ROUND 1 (OPEN)

So, here we go then. My write ups will be in normal default text, like this. My co-judge’s write ups will be in red, like below, as he is much angrier than me. Our write ups will be short as we’re both reviewing each song, and there are SO MANY OF YOU at the moment.

Hello, I am the mystery judge. To Quote Bilbo Baggins: "I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve." I've been coming here for my musical fix for a long time. I'm not even much of a fan of the band anymore, but that’s not a huge deal, the band doesn't really come here either. Let’s go.

kari: Beach House – Lazuli
Rich 2.5 + Other 2.0 = 4.5

Pretty little tune, quite a nice vibe. Doesn’t really grab me massively though, doesn’t really have anything that makes it stand out. Pleasant, but little more.

Let me start by saying that this is a prog metal forum; please consider that when sending me things. Abba2K is not going to cut it. You're lucky you got a 2.

Sigz: Portico Quartet – Ruins
Rich 3.0 + Other 2.0 = 5.0

I enjoyed this quite a lot. Quite unique instrumentation used very nicely, very cool live feel throughout. Didn’t blow me away though, I guess I was waiting for more of a climax that never seemed to really come.

Again, this is not my thing. When Bill let them use the warehouse for the video did he forget his pair of Weber Grillmaster BBQ's? Why else would they be there for that percussionist to play?  And play them he did. I would rather have cooked the saxophone.

Marvellous G: Kings of Convenience (ft. Royksopp) – I Don’t Know What I can Save You From
Rich 3.5 + Other 1.0 = 4.5

I really, really like this! I love Kings of Convenience, they’re one of my main go-to bands for chillout vibe, but I haven’t heard any remixes of their music before. This was so calming and nice, really lovely atmosphere.

I'll tell you what you can save me from: listening to that again. Was it even Kings of Convenience, or a reinterpretation? Could have been either. I had no idea who they were before, nor will I after this roulette.

jingle.boy: Rosewell Six – I Am The Point
Rich 2.0 + Other 3.0 = 5.0

Hmm, some nice ideas, but I didn’t feel convinced me. Not sure if it’s the arrangement or the production or what, but it just sounds a bit 2nd tier and amateurish. Not the best performance from The Cheese either. Not bad, but not great.

Well well well, an actual song. I long ago stopped following all of the DT members around like a lost puppy, so I hadn’t even heard of this arrangement of artists. Quite a group! The song over killed with the opera stuff (though probably part of a grander theme) and James has sounded better, but I might actually check it out. So for that alone it gets a 3.

Lateralus: maudlin of the well – Birth Pains of Astral Projection
Rich 1.5 + Other 1.0 = 2.5

I’ve never been able to get that much into maudlin of the well, and this hasn’t changed my mind as I’ve heard better stuff from them. There were some cool ideas in here, but the song as a whole just feels so meandering.

A score of 1, for making me search the band name, and then sit through more of "that". I had to look up the song name to find out what I was listening to. Then I wiki'd them to find out that their last album was funded by donations from fans. They got what they paid for.

orcus116: Meet the Strangers – I Got the Curse
Rich 3.0 + Other 2.0 = 5.0

This is quite groovy, nice modern twist on a sort of 60s-70s style. After the first listen I wasn’t really sold on it, but I enjoyed it a lot more on second listen, has a nice build throughout the song. Vocals are a bit of a weak point, but otherwise this is pretty cool.

I liked this style better when the Beatles did it, and did it well. Even the crunchy nugget at the end couldn't save this one. (Side note to Rich, but you can all read - The force isn't strong with this one, probably not round 2 material…) – Only joking, orcus!

skydivingninja: Anamanaguchi – Helix Nebula
Rich 2.0 + Other 2.0 = 4.0

Afraid to say I just can’t get into chiptune, although I do enjoy some videogame music. I think it’s different in the context of a game though, where it evokes feelings from the story, or whatever. This was pretty enjoyable overall, but not something I feel much desire to listen to again.

You're lucky I'm a bit of a gamer, because really this is as craptastic as some of the onesies. At least it moves along at a decent pace. But at one point in this song I swear I'd heard this as a sitcom theme. Friends maybe?

kingshmegland: Slow Motion Reign – Life Simulator
Rich 2.5 + Other 2.5 = 5.0

Pretty dark song this, definitely has an interesting and quite intense feel to it. It does drag a bit though, just feels like it doesn’t really go anywhere. I don’t know anything about this band, but I think they have a lot of potential if they could tighten their music a bit.

Well, it was more interesting than most of the others, but that's not saying much. I wound up cleaning gunk out from under my finger nails before it was over, so a resounding "meh".

lonestar: The Deadstation – Subsistence Defined
Rich 2.5 + Other 3.5 = 6.0

I really enjoyed this at the start, very competent and enjoyable technical metal in the vein of Periphery. But while they’re clearly very talented, there wasn’t anything in the song that really stood out for me, no huge chorus or anything. Good stuff undoubtedly, but just lacking something for me.

I actually turned this one UP. It got overly busy at some points, and the vocals went from big hit to big miss in spots. Hmm, overall I liked, quite a bit. Well done.

Nekov: Arena – Bedlam Fayre
Rich 3.0 + Other 2.5 = 5.5

This is a very nicely done straightforward prog song. Good song-writing, nice sense of melody and rhythm, very nice song overall. It does border on being overly cheesy though, particularly in the lyrics.

You picked a band I know very well and enjoy quite a bit. You may do well in the next round as well. I won't fault you for sending me a song I already enjoy, but I can't overly reward you for it either. None of you were given much to go on with respect to the mystery. Still, good tune.

Ħ: Massive Attack – Angel
Rich 2.5 + Other 2.0 = 4.5

Interesting song, atmospheric, nice build up and then down again. Didn’t wow me though – I can’t think of anything wrong with it as such, but I just don’t have that much good to say either. Good song but nothing special.

Bleak song, only familiarity saved it as it has appeared in more TV and movie soundtracks than I can count. It's building to something, and is an interesting creation, but it’s not even music. It's like a theme for an event, if that makes sense.

Zantera: The Smashing Pumpkins – Tonight, Tonight
Rich 3.0 + Other 1.5 = 4.5

This is a very nice song, one of my favourites by the Smashing Pumpkins, but I know it quite well. I’m capping songs I’m already a big fan of to a score of 3, although that’s probably what I would have given it anyway.

Obviously we weren't going to put every artist in history on the DON'T SEND list. Tut tut Z. This song hasn't grown on me since it first came out.

YtseBitsySpider: Judas Priest – Turbo Lover
Rich 1.5 + Other 1.5 = 3.0

Sorry dude, I’ve heard a bit of JP before (even seen them live at a festival) and I’ve just never dug them. Like with Lat’s submission, I’m afraid this hasn’t changed my mind. It’s not terrible, a decent hard rock song, but there’s just nothing find very interesting in it.

See Above. We all know Priest. This is the album we all forgot. Heck even Priest fans don't like to acknowledge it exists, so why should I?

TheVoxyn: Radiohead – Paranoid Android
Rich 3.0 + Other 1.5 = 4.5

I love this song, but again I’m already a big fan of it. You weren’t necessarily to know that, but that’s all part of the roulette. As I said, I’m capping songs I’m already a big fan of to a score of 3, so that’s what you get because this is one of my favourite Radiohead songs.

People, please. Artist and name of the song! Yup, another I had to google the song title to find out who the hell I was listening to. Ten more listens would not have this grow on me. Sorry Mr Voxyn. This one is up-beat, and gets pretty crazy near the midway point. But in reality I had to ask myself, would I ever listen to this again unless I was being paid to do so, and the answer was no.

Ultimetalhead: Dog Fashion Disco – The Hitchhiker
Rich 3.0 + Other 2.0 = 5.0

And again another song I know very well, and in this case you definitely knew because you asked about it in the thread! Totally insane song, as so much of their music is, and the random lounge jazz in the middle still cracks me up. You get a capped score of 3.

It's demented alright. I don't know. It's not quite as bad as the bottom tier this round but it's not grabbing me like lonestar's or jingle's, so it's something. A bit like Devin Townsend. Except I like Devin.

Obscure: Tellus Requiem – Red Horizon
Rich 2.0 + Other 2.5 = 4.5

Decent enough prog metal, but I dunno, it just doesn’t excite me very much. Sounds like a lot of stuff I’ve heard before, but not as interesting. There were some good bits, and the band play very nicely, but overall I end up a little underwhelmed I’m afraid.

Alright, it is as you described, mostly. Great hooks, great melodies. But the arrangement is sloppy; it's all over the place just to be, well, all over the place. It suffers from some traditional euro prog metal problems too. It over-does the operatic vocal styles and backing vocals, like spaghetti with too much garlic. I don't know if the keyboardist only uses that tone, but it was finger nails on the blackboard to me, just awful.

Heretic: In Colour – All That I've Been Waiting For
Rich 4.0 + Other 2.0 = 6.0

YES! Absolutely love this. Great sound, and I like the blend between pop sensibilities and a hard rock vibe. Really great singer as well, draws me right into the music. I had a listen to the other song they’ve released which was also lovely. These two songs have got me excited in anticipation of a full release from them!

I'll have to speak to Rich about updating the no-submission list, I guess it should have included no Duran Duran. Oh wait, that's not who this is, is it? I can tell you what I was waiting for, this song to get good. I guess they'll let anyone pick up instruments these days. Better luck next round.

Gorille85: Lorn - Weigh Me Down
Rich 2.5 + Other 2.0 = 6.0

This is one hell of a weird song, but then I’ve come to expect that from you. :lol It has a very cool, dark, gothic vibe to it. I also find it interesting in the way it incorporates the electronic elements, but I’m not convinced they quite work for me, which means a lot of the track ends up feeling a little awkward. Not bad though.

I can't score it low just because I don't like it can I? Yup I can, and I just did. Very much noise to me. Sorry Gorille.

The scores after round 1:
Heretic - 6
lonestar - 6
Nekov - 5.5
jingle.boy - 5
kingshmegland - 5
orcus116 - 5
Sigz - 5
Ultimetalhead - 5
Gorille85 - 4.5
Ħ - 4.5
kári - 4.5
Marvellous G - 4.5
obscure - 4.5
TheVoxyn - 4.5
Zantera - 4.5
skydivingninja - 4
YtseBitsySpider - 3
lateralus88 - 2.5

Mixed first round, some stuff didn’t work for me, and some I loved! As you can see I’m capping stuff I already know very well, to try and inspire a bit more innovation. Looking at the scores, the people at the top really pleased either me or my co-judge (although there was nothing we both loved), while those at the bottom failed to impress either of us. It’s all very close in the middle though!

Well that was Round 1. I'm mostly very disappointed. The only song I listened to many more times with genuine keenness was lonestar's. I hope you all get out of the fog you're in and hit me over the head with some Champion worthy tunes.

Round 2 – Keyboards
This time we want music with strong and interesting use of keyboards, either throughout the song or as a solo.

I'm not sure about setting a deadline for this, because I go away on holiday on Wednesday for 10 days. If everyone can submit songs very quickly, then we might be able to turn it around before I go, but otherwise the absolute deadline will be the 29th December when I get back.

I think I know who the mystery judge is.

(Ain't gonna reveal who I think it is though) :)
:jets:  Well, I'm dead wrong about who the mystery judge is.

Hmmm.
-The mystery judge is male.
-The mystery judge isn't really a fan of DT anymore, but frequents the forum.
-The mystery judge has a hard-as-nails musical taste.
-The mystery judge potentially has access to the DTF's "back door" section, as evidenced by the fact that Ariich can read his reviews as he writes them (like he could in an editable forum thread).
-The mystery judge is a gamer.

I thought it was bosk, because he fits the description perfectly...but he is still a big DT fan. So is hefdaddy and nearly all the other mods whose tastes I'm familiar with. Neither is the mystery judge a band member or a band associate (like Blob or Rich Wilson). No idea who it could be.

Seriously though. This is CLOSE. #10....all right. Let's do this. *cracks knuckles*

The point regarding band and song names is actually quite valid, as gmail allows you to stream mp3s directly which is much quicker and more convenient for us, but doesn't show any of the file tags, only the file name itself.

I had the same problem in my roulette too, it's very annoying indeed, it just gives you a number and *maybe* a title, but it's just a hassle to download the file first, then look up the tags. I agree.

Still waiting on kari, Marvellous G and orcus. If you can get the songs in tonight we'll have results by tomorrow night and then leave those who progress to have a bit of time to think about round 3!

You can make it EXTRA exciting by already posting the other results now and then there'll be one person in the middle who will die of suspense in anticipation of orcus' score.

I've realised that the current scores work out that, excluding orcus, we have 9 people who will definitely go through as the last 3 of them have the same score. So I think I will post the current scores anyway, and then we can add orcus in when he sends - and if he scores high enough then we will have 10 in the finals. (otherwise we'd have to eliminate somebody on 10 points arbitrarily)

Updated 31st December to include the final results for orcus!

RESULTS – ROUND 2 (KEYBOARDS)

Ħ: Supertramp – School
Rich 2.5 + Other 2.5 = 5.0

Nice song this, takes a little while to get going but it has a nice groove, and once the piano solo kicks in the song gets a lot more energy. Wouldn’t say I love it, but I enjoyed it a fair bit.

Familiarity with this song, and its enormous popularity, helped you here. It has a great piano riff, but I've always known it for its fantastic bass line. It's one of the few songs I know where being the bassist would be pretty cool. Not quite what we were going for with the theme, but not bad. You got .5 extra for getting me to listen to the original album version (which I'd never heard) as opposed to the radio edit, and I think the cut that appears on the Greatest Hits. This one is different, with the obviously longer piano portion.

lonestar: Martin Orford – Power and Speed
Rich 2.5 + Other 3.0 = 5.5

I enjoyed this, nice proggy instrumental rock with quite an upbeat atmosphere. The playing nice and the melodies are good, but on both listens I did find myself tuning out a bit towards the end.

Another solid entry from lonestar. Not perfect though, some parts where he seems to run out of ideas about where the song should go. Seems for the first couple of minutes or so he has a great line that builds and repeats, but then he's all over the place. But, as with the last round, I liked.

Nekov: Martin Orford – Power and Speed
Rich 2.5 + Other 3.0 = 5.5

See above.

See lonestar’s review.

kingshmegland: Rocket Scientists – Earthbound
Rich 3.0 + Other 3.5 = 6.5

This is very old school sounding (even though it was only recorded in 2007) but I dig it a lot. Nice synthesisers with quite a warm sound, even if they are a bit dated. I was finding the start of the song a bit meandering but then when it reaches the vocal parts it’s very nice 70s style rock.

Nearly Perfect! I don't think I blinked during that entire video. The only thing that bothered me was that they added singing; the singing was good, don't get me wrong, it just wasn't necessary. Well done.

Ultimetalhead: Ozric Tentacles – Coily
Rich 3.0 + Other 3.0 = 6.0

The opening of this song is really cool, I was engaged right from the start. As with the Martin Orford song above, it starts to drag a little towards the end and I lose a bit of interest, but the music itself is really very good, quite experimental with the sounds which I dig and which suits the rounds theme nicely.

Incredible stuff, my only concern is the difference between a synthesizer and keyboard. This song is one big synthesizer. I don't have an issue with it, but hair splitters might argue you strayed from the theme. Still, an excellent entry.

skydivingninja: Fair to Midland – Coppertank Island
Rich 3.0 + Other 2.5 = 5.5

Already a big FTM fan so I know this song pretty well. I like the way they use the keyboard sound throughout this song, which is a bit unusual for them, but other than that it’s pretty standard FTM fare, with a huge chorus and terrific vocals. Great stuff.

Keyboards with some crunch, the best kind of keys! I like the dancy beat too, very Kevin Moore-y in the way that Kevin's playing never overpowered a song. Not bad at all.

obscure: Vitalij Kuprij – Symphonic Force
Rich 1.5 + Other 2.5 = 4.0

Hmm, not sure this is entirely my thing. It’s fairly enjoyable, but I just find it a bit chaotic, and not very tight. This kind of neo-classical prog metal needs to be sharp, but this recording is just a bit too rough for me. The track doesn’t really go anywhere either, and doesn’t really flow. Sorry Nem!

The first comment on the youtube vid is that song is mis-titled. Regardless, it was pretty good; sounded like a bunch of different artists rolled into one. Kinda like Planet X, kinda like some old Symphony X. Ran on at the end though, could have ended at the 4 minute mark. Still, very interesting.

lateralus: The Fury Abstract – The Astronomer
Rich 3.0 + Other 2.5 = 5.5

It’s clear these guys are new as the production is a little rough and the song does go on a bit long, but I really liked the song and dug the ideas throughout. And you’re right about the keys – they’re subtle but they do add so much to the sound. If they can refine their ideas and tighten their guitar sound, these guys could be great.

More keyboards with crunchy guitars around them. I didn't like his tone, and the whole thing sounded very artificial in spots, like one guy in his basement making all this in sections then piecing it all together. Still it moved along pretty decent, so it was ok.

jingle.boy: Affector - Harmageddon
Rich 2.5 + Other 2.5 = 5.0

Well, I couldn’t ask for more in terms of fitting the theme, what with all the keyboard solos! I enjoyed the song a fair bit, lots of nice ideas, but the song didn’t really seem very coherent. I appreciate that it may need the rest of the album around it to make sense, but it did seem like a collection of ideas rather than a song.

I was on the fence over this one. I'm not a fan of this particular vocalist, but the instrumental passages, and in particular the requested keyboards, were outstanding. Overall I found myself liking it in spite of the singing. Definitely might have to check more of this disc.

TheVoxyn: Efterklang – Modern Drift
Rich 2.5 + Other 2.0 = 4.5

This is a cute song, but I’m not sure it really fits the theme at all. There’s piano in there, but the far more prominent sounds are acoustic instruments like the strings. Still, it’s a very pleasant listen, I can imagine sitting back on a summer day and just chilling out to it.

Well, it had keyboards. The video had rutting deer, and a woman running naked in a field. The deer never mounted the woman despite my desires to see it happen. They might have been caribou, or elk. So many horny animals it's hard to know.

Zantera: M83 – Outro
Rich 3.5 + Other 2.5 = 6.0

This was not what I was expecting from this round at all, but I found it quite beautiful. Such atmosphere, lovely rich keyboard sounds, and a really fantastic build-up and climax. Very post-rock-esque. Going to have to check out more of M83’s stuff.

Sounded like a Vangelis offering, say from Blade Runner. If music is supposed to invoke a feeling, this song did. It made me sad. His singing, though not my style, was excellent at making me feel something. Weird song. Also, it had keyboards but no rutting deer at least.

Gorille: Ed Harrison - Haka
Rich 3.0 + Other 2.5 = 5.5

I liked this a lot. Great sampling and layering of sounds, and a cool down-tempo vibe. The track does stop and start a bit, which is a little jarring, but other than that it’s very nice.

It had some interesting sounds, but was a pretty bland ambient offering to be honest. Nothing really wrong with it, but not much memorable about it either.

Heretic: Dead Letter Circus - Next in Line
Rich 3.0 + Other 2.5 = 5.5

Another solid submission from you, again with a band I know nothing about but really enjoyed. Great sound, particularly with the keys/synth going all throughout, nice heavy vibe and anthemic chorus.

Good, good, could have been a 3. Should really have been a 3, but there’s something about it, possibly a bit weak on the repeat listen value. Though I did listen twice for the keyboards, as they were quite subtle.

Sigz: Rolo Tomassi - I Love Turbulence
Rich 2.0 + Other 2.0 = 4.0

I was really digging this until the vocals came in. :lol It gets better again though, totally mad and experimental. My limited experience of Tomassi has always been like this – I enjoy the wacky innovation, but just find his vocals too much. Fortunately this time they’re not used too extensively.

Noisy. I went through this phase when I was younger, it's not bad as such, just different. Like industrial math death metal or some such. A lot of the noises sound thrown in for effect which, I guess, is the point.

kari: Portishead – The Rip
Rich 2.5 + Other 1.5 = 4.0

This is an attractive song, but I’ve heard more interesting stuff from Portishead. I like their sound and their style, but a lot of the time I find them more suitable as background music than as something to pay attention to, and I’m afraid to say that’s the case with this song as well.

Sticking to your guns, kari, I can respect that. Not my think though.

Marvellous G: Destroyer - Bay of Pigs
Rich 2.5 + Other 3.0 = 5.5

Afraid I don’t love this as much as your last submission, but I did find it intriguing. You used a very apt word – haunting – to describe it. Reminds me of an electronic Roger Waters. Cool stuff, but there wasn’t enough going on to keep my attention for 11 minutes.

Another one that reminded me of Vangelis, and Buckethead even. I won't lie, this is certainly something I'd never normally listen to, but his spoken word style held my attention. Then a dancey beat. Although then he said the word "antlers" and I couldn’t stop laughing.

YtseBitsySpider: Dead by April – Angel of Clarity
Rich 2.0 + Other 3.0 = 5.0

I feel like I should have enjoyed this a lot more – it starts so well, cool riffing and tight playing. But the vocals really bug me (and you know me, I’ve nothing against growls) and the chorus just seems quite out of place. I like mixing heavy with melodic, but I don’t think these guys get it right.

Wow... Growling, dance beats, Bieber-esque vocals, and of course keyboard-infused metal. I wouldn't have believed it, but it somehow worked in a big way. And they kept it short so as not to annoy people.

orcus: Justice – The Waters Of Nazareth
Rich 2.5 + Other 1.5 = 4.0

Groovy song. Nice solid beat, and cool synth sounds. Nothing that particularly wowed me though, or made me want to listen again, but I liked it.

Better late than never, right? Well, no. Never would have been better. Ok so it's not THAT bad, but it's not really all that good. Moving on.

The scores after round 2:
Heretic - 11.5
lonestar - 11.5
kingshmegland - 11.5
Nekov - 11
Ultimetalhead - 11
Zantera - 10.5
jingle.boy - 10
Marvellous G - 10
Gorille85 – 10
-----------------------
Ħ - 9.5
skydivingninja - 9.5
Sigz - 9
TheVoxyn - 9
orcus116 – 9
kári - 8.5
obscure - 8.5
YtseBitsySpider - 8
lateralus88 – 8

Sorry to those who didn’t make it, and congrats to those who did!

Round 3 – Heavy
This doesn’t have to mean heavy in the sense of aggressive or “metal”, but can be heavy in tone or mood as well.  Either blow as away or depress the shit out of us!

Remember, I'm away for 10 days now, so there's no urgent rush. Orcus, if I'm able to hear your round 2 submission while I'm away then I will do. Otherwise, you might want to submit for round 3 as well, in case you progress!

kingshmegland: Rocket Scientists – Earthbound

NICE!  I was on the verge of sending some Erik Norlander, but since I just used it in RJ's last time round, thought I'd mix it up.  I only have Revolution Road, and was mostly unimpressed.  But I just looked this track up on ReverbNation... not too shabby.

All right!  Now the real competition begins.

Just re-read the reviews.  Mystery man's comments and ratings are as consistent as Romney's final two months of campaigning.  Comments from the songs that got a 2.5 score:

"Definitely might have to check more of this disc."
"but not much memorable about it either."
"Not quite what we were going for with the theme, but not bad."
"...the best kind of keys... I like the dancy beat too ... Not bad at all."
"didn't like his tone, and the whole thing sounded very artificial in spots... Still it moved along pretty decent, so it was ok."
"Weird song. Also, it had keyboards but no rutting deer at least."
"Good, good, could have been a 3. Should really have been a 3"

And as for this week's theme (Heavy, but doesn't need to be metal)... inb4 RJ sends The Dead!   :lol

The round 2 results have now been updated: https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=34990.msg1467948#msg1467948

Sorry orcus, I liked it but you didn't please the mystery judge enough.

For round 3, we have 7 of the 9 submissions in. Just awaiting Heretic and Gorille! Should be able to pick up the pace now that I'm back from my holiday. :)

Not even close. Nick's is still the slowest by several months. You can tell he deals with the dead. His roulette moved along like something dead.

still hard to follow along on what's happening in this one when er nothing is happening.

Windyhole's isn't moving along very briskly either.

I don't see how it's that slow, it took a 10 day break which was notified in advance because I want here.

Basically, SHUT YO MOUF. :P

But yeah, Gorille appears to be MIA. I'll give him one more day, and if still nothing then I'll post results tomorrow.

RESULTS – ROUND 3 (HEAVY)

Heretic: The Mayan Factor – Jack Nicholson
Rich 3.0 + Other 1.0 = 4.0

This song is pretty damn dark. Nice Radiohead vibe but somewhat unique as well. This song has such a great build, the sound just gets bigger and bigger throughout the entire duration of the song. In a way it’s a bit repetitive, with the same motif repeated over and over, but it works pretty well to create an intense atmosphere. Good stuff.

Anytime now, let’s go song. Today! What round is this again? I could have sworn this was the heavy round. Maybe I'm scoring the wrong round. Yup must be me. 3 minutes plus, still waiting. Wait a second. This is one of those songs that must be "heavy in tone" or some such. Gotcha. My score is also heavy and dark in tone and near the bottom of the scale for this Pearl Jam knock off.

Jingle.boy: Epysode – Obsessions
Rich 2.0 + Other 2.5 = 4.5

Nicely done rock opera here, but nothing that especially stands out other than the female singer who has a damn good voice! The music is slick but pretty straightforward really, and the male singer is impressive but ever so slightly grating after a while! If the full album has more variety than this then I might check it out, as it’s not bad.

The backstory of this video took over 2 minutes, -0.5 for that. It's about the song, people, not the video. It’s good. I hear lots of different bands in this music, which makes me wonder what if anything is original about them. I'm fairly certain Russell Allen could sue this guy and have a case. Then they made a catchy "roll the credits" jingle at the end. Cute.

Zantera: Deftones – Poltergeist
Rich 2.5 + Other 2.5 = 5.0

Pretty heavy song. I’m very familiar with Deftones’ first three albums, but haven’t really heard anything they’ve done since then, and I have to say they’ve refined their sound quite a lot, and are sounding much slicker these days! Doesn’t have such a good melodic climax as some songs on their early albums, but it’s decent stuff still.

I don't know why the Deftones have never clicked with me, I think they're too hung up on being smarty pants about their craft. They've always reminded me of Voivod in that way. Right around 1:57 I like how they move into the little clappy break down. It was ok. Still something about this band trying to be uniquely unique that keeps them from being especially special.

Nekov: Catacombe – Playground Ghosts
Rich 2.0 + Other 2.0 = 4.0

Definitely a good heavy tone at times here, but I think the riffs just don’t have enough in them to carry this song as an instrumental. There isn’t enough going on in the music for me. I think if this was a little tighter and had some good vocals over the top, or if they got more intricate and went full-on post-metal, it could be really good. The melodic stuff is nice though, again just lacking something.

Another one of those heavy-toned ones. It wasn't bad, just not overwhelming. Made me think what Devin's music would sound like instrumental.

kingshmegland: I Mother Earth – Hell & Malfunction
Rich 3.0 + Other 3.0 = 6.0

I don’t really know anything about these guys, but right from the off they remind me a lot of Tool. Not quite in a copycat way though, I think they take a lot of Tool’s vibe but do their own thing (like a nice guitar solo, for example). I like it. It’s a dark song, definitely heavy in tone and sound, and it’s very engaging.

Jingle should be familiar with these cats. He'd also likely tell you most of what was good about them left when Edwin did. Though I did like this vocalist. All very grungy and early 2000's. The little ditty at 3:30 would have been so much better sped up a tad. As you can tell this round, I'm listening and writing. I think I'm going to revise my score. This song got groovy and a whole lot better after halfway. Nice one.

Marvellous G: Bonnie Prince Billie – I See a Darkness
Rich 3.0 + Other 2.0 = 5.0

I was actually sent this song in my first roulette! I liked it but ranked it low because it came in a very strong round, and the song didn’t really go anywhere. My feelings haven’t changed much, in that it’s still a very bleak and melancholy song, and a very attractive one at that. It still doesn’t really go anywhere, but that doesn’t bother me so much in the context of this round.

This song is heavy, in the way the Marty McFly said "heavy" when describing things to Doc Brown. Bob Dylan would find this song "heavy". Or he could be singing about a light bulb burning out while pinching a loaf. Because all of a sudden "there's a darkness".

lonestar: Black Stone Cherry – Such a Shame
Rich 3.0 + Other 2.5 = 5.5

Very nice song, reminds me quite a lot of Alter Bridge. The riffing is good, the performances are really top notch (particularly the vocals), the melodies are nice and the lyrics are pretty dark. I’ve never really paid much attention to Black Stone Cherry, but this is good quality hard rock, so maybe I should give them a proper listen.

Nickelback be proud: thou hast been cloned! I jest. But still, if there's a Nickelback jello mold in that kitchen of yours lonestar, then this little aspic must have fallen out of it. It pumps along at a nice clip but that's about it.

Ultimetalhead: Candlemass – At The Gallows End
Rich 1.5 + Other 3.0 = 4.5

I don’t know if it’s the dated production or the over-the-top vocals (so much vibrato!), but I just couldn’t get into this. It’s not bad, and I can see what you’re saying about being like Black Sabbath but darker, but then I think I appreciate Sabbath a lot more for their originality and for basically creating this style of music.

Candlemass, another band that never clicked with me, always too… something... But I actually turned this one up. Pretty simplistic song, nice doom vibe, some cool wailing vocals. Good stuff.

The scores after round 3:
kingshmegland - 17.5
lonestar - 17
Heretic - 15.5
Ultimetalhead - 15.5
Zantera - 15.5
Nekov - 15
Marvellous G - 15
jingle.boy - 14.5

[Gorille85 – TBC…]

Joe edges ahead! It’s all to play for though, we’re going to have a handful more regular rounds, after which the top 4 will go into playoffs, so you’re all still in the runnings!

Round 4 – Favourite
Simple round this time: send us your current favourite song. The mystery judge promises no smug smarmy bullshit. He will attempt to judge it based on quality, despite the subjectivity of that even (note the word “attempt”). Good luck to all.

This time, we will have a deadline of the 9th January (Wednesday). Ideally send songs much earlier and we can get some pace back again, but we will be posting results on the 10th, and if songs are not in then the score will be zero (unless there is a good genuine reason, of course).

No time limit, but it'd need to hold our attention! You can if course always send your second favourite if you're unsure. :P

RESULTS – ROUND 4 (FAVOURITE)

kingshmegland: Pyramid Theorem – Another Day Slips By
Rich 2.5 + Other 3.0 = 5.5

Nice song, although not a whole lot more than that really. I like the general vibe and I think they play really nicely, but the style was pretty straightforward and nothing really stood out or grabbed me (I’ve listened a couple of times but couldn’t tell you how it goes!). Pretty good though.

Nice. Very 80's Rush, for sure. In fact, the music is really excellent, but the vocals aren't just awful they're horrendous, which brings it down. These guys need to hire themselves a singer… someone call Charlie! Great keyboards, and despite the Rush influence there’s some originality in their playing. Overall I liked but again, those vocals. Ouch.

jingle.boy: Dec Burke – Small Hours
Rich 3.0 + Other 2.0 = 5.0

I haven’t heard any of Dec’s solo work, but I really liked this. It’s a bit rough around the edges – the production isn’t so strong, and his voice isn’t as effective as it is in front of Frost’s powerful music, but it’s really nice music and quite catchy. Very nice guitar playing too. Good stuff!

Somewhere between Transatlantic and Yes. I don't know, I can forgive Yes for being Yes, but I've never been able to forgive Transatlantic for failing in the attempt. This song starts and moves along, and the guitar/keys duet at 2:50 grabbed me a bit. The solo at the end is ok. Over all it sounded very plain. Like a b-side pieced together from other ideas.

Marvellous G: Dave Matthews Band - Warehouse
Rich 2.5 + Other 2.5 = 5.0

This was a nicely done song, and a top quality live performance of it. I’ve of course heard of the Dave Matthews Band but frankly I know nothing about them, but I enjoyed this. It does go on a bit long though, and seems to meander a bit in the middle, but then for the crowd there at the time it’s probably great.

Ok, this is like cheating for this round. There's certainly no way I can crap on this band for musicianship - even though I don't care for them, they are very, very skilled. My problem with this band is that they never changed or adapted with the times, and have never shown me anything new. In the same way Nickelback annoys people for having a catalogue of samey music, this band has done the same (albeit with vastly better musicians).

Zantera: Oceansize – Music For a Nurse
Rich 3.5 + Other 2.5 = 6.0

This was quite beautiful. I’m somewhat familiar with Oceansize, but only their last couple of albums which I don’t recall being quite as slow and atmospheric as this. Great build up, not a lot happens in the song but it’s very well-paced. I need to check this album out, and I also need to give Frames another listen at some point!

Hmm, sounds like Buckethead at times, whom I quite enjoy. I didn't understand a lot of what I was hearing though. Tones and textures. But it caught me in a quiet reflective mood and so I quite liked it.

Nekov: dredg – Ode to the Sun
Rich 3.0 + Other 2.5 = 5.5

You’re a bit unlucky to send me the first song I’m completely familiar with since round 2, so I have to cap this at 3.0 I’m afraid. I love it though, such a great opener to a really nice album (although not my favourite on the album – the title track and Sang Real at least beat it, possibly others).

My first Dredg song ever. Are these guys British? It was like heavy U2 (yes I know U2 aren't British). I can't find anything wrong with it, it was ok. Certainly not my cup of tea though.

lonestar: Speaking to Stones – Earth
Rich 2.5 + Other 3.0 = 5.5

DAMMIT NICK, why all the long songs this round? :lol This song opens really well, the heavy riff in the opening minute gets head-banging along, which is always a good sign. After that it’s pretty good, and they play nicely but it jumps around a lot, and utilises quite a lot of power metal clichés (like the middle eastern section). I also don’t think the song warranted being as long as it was, I started to drift a bit around half way through. Nothing against long songs that shift around, but not always an ideal choice for song roulettes!

Pretty damned epic song you made me sit through there. Vocals we're not lights-out, but at least he could sing. This was a pretty good proggy power metal song. It was all over the place, but it grabbed me early, and I had to keep listening to see where they'd go. Well done.

Ultimetalhead: Foxy Shazam - Oh Lord
Rich 3.0 + Other 2.0 = 5.0

Another song I know very well. Such a ridiculously catchy song, and album as a whole. Pretty much every song makes me want to sing along!

Reminded me of Queen, for some reason. Certainly meant as a compliment. It was funny and fun, although that’s about it. I would counter this song with Scatterbrain - Don't Call Me Dude.

Heretic: Scale The Summit – Redwoods
Rich 3.0 + Other 3.0 = 6.0

This is a really frustrating track – it’s such nice music, they play well and they do a great job of writing rock music in a major key which a lot of bands really struggle. But there’s something lacking, and I think it’s because there just isn’t enough going on for an instrumental. The solo sections are great but for a lot of the song I’m sat there thinking WHY AREN’T THERE ANY VOCALS HERE?! I’ve still given you a 3 because I really like the music, but I feel like it could have been higher!

Interesting start, not dull, and great feet on the drummer. The song sounds like a bit of a jam session, but the more I listen it's not quite like "recorded jams" like LTE 1 & 2. This is more rough draft sounding. It's nice that way, because it kept me guessing. The central theme wasn’t completely obvious and they never FULLY committed to coming back to it. Overall, I liked.

Still all to play for! We’ll allow Gorille to catch up if he returns soon, but he hasn’t logged in since 29th December, so we’re going to have to carry on without him for now.

Round 5 – Experimental
Ok, that round was a bit safe, and resulted in my co-judge being uncharacteristically reasonable. So let’s mix it up a bit this time. Send us something “experimental”. Interpret that however you want, but we don’t mean the music has to be totally out there, but it should do something new, something a bit different.

Yeah we both do that, and I don't see what's so weird about it. You can "quite like" something, which isn't very strong at all (so 2.5 is about right) and you can find something pretty good although not something you'd normally listen to much, in which case 2.5 is still about right.

Presumably you want every review to be either "I LOVE IT, 4 POINTS" or "IT SUCKED, 1 POINT". :P

Presumably you want every review to be either "I LOVE IT, 4 POINTS" or "IT SUCKED, 1 POINT". :P

Fair, but let's take the 'not my cup of tea' out of it.

I quite liked it = 2.5
I can't find anything wrong with it. It was ok = 2.5

None-the-less, I'm sented.

RESULTS – ROUND 5 (EXPERIMENTAL)

Heretic: Suspicious Waveforms – Thank You Scientist
Rich 3.0 + Other 2.5 = 5.5

This is ridiculously groovy! Very nice fusion of jazz, funk, folk (particularly with the violins) and rock. The band are very talented, they play very tightly and with some real swagger. Fit the theme of the round very nicely as well – not totally wacky but nicely unique and not really something I’ve heard before. Enjoyed it a lot!

Some pretty technical acid jazz (or similar). I like the comments calling this jazz-fusion - just because it got forced into a structured rhythm half-way through doesn't mean it "fused" with anything. Although they should have let the axeman loose earlier in the song. Nonetheless, I liked it, it was pretty good, even if not really my cup of tea.

Marvellous G: Jai Paul – Jasmine
Rich 2.5 + Other 2.0 = 4.5

Interesting song. I like the down-tempo vibe, and the mix of sounds, but it’s a bit hard to grasp much in it, even after a couple of listens. I’m used to “glitch” sounds in electronic music, but this song has little pauses and similar that actually sound like a CD skipping, which is a little off-putting. Points for experimentation though, I can’t think of much else I’ve heard that’s anything like this.

Well, we asked for experimental, and that was pretty out there. Not much else to say really. It was music.

kingshmegland: Primus – Tommy the Cat
Rich 2.5 + Other 2.5 = 5.0

What is this I don’t even. The overall vibe is very 90s, a la Faith No More or early Chili Peppers. But this is quite a lot more bonkers! First listen just confused me, but on second listen it was quite enjoyable. Awesome bass playing, and the stuff in the second half where the vocals become more rhythmic is really funky.

I actually owned this disc at one point, good stuff. Nothing else to say here. Good submission.

lonestar: The Mercury Tree – Pterodactyls
Rich 2.0 + Other 2.0 = 4.0

Hmm, this was fairly unusual I suppose, and there are definitely some cool ideas in it. But on the whole it didn’t really grab me very much, there wasn’t much that made me want to keep listening. And to be honest, it rather outstayed its welcome.

Kind of a punky type song, To be honest, I tuned out about 2 minutes in or so. But it was unusual and fit the round theme, so kudos for that.

Zantera: Mr.Bungle – Ars Moriendi
Rich 2.5 + Other 2.0 = 4.5

Ok, so this song pretty much killed my brain. Absolutely no doubt that this is experimental, so I have to give some points for that. And bits of it are really quite enjoyable, Mike Patton has such a great humour with his music. On the whole though, it’s just a bit too batshit insane for me.

My first Mr.Bungle song ever. Well, there's so much going on it's hard to grab any one part and say "I liked that" or "that even". It's like a scary birthday party gone wrong. But it's what we asked for so, more kudos.

Ultimetalhead: Sigh – Sunset Song
Rich 2.5 + Other 3.0 = 5.5

This song is just bizarre. I’ve no idea whether this is normal for Sigh, but the song seems to shift genre every 20 seconds, between classic rock, black metal, lounge jazz, thrash, 80s metal… and that’s just my description of the first two minutes. It’s hard to really get into though, and as you know I’ve nothing against harsh vocals but this guy doesn’t really do it for me. I was going to award 2 points, but the random dance section around 4 minutes won me over. :lol

Not sure why, not sure how, but this one worked better for me than others. Oh, it was just as out there, but I digged it (dug it?).

jingle.boy: Amaranthe – Call Out My Name
Rich 2.0 + Other 2.0 = 4.0

Mm, not sure this is particularly experimental, sounds like a lot of the growls + female vocals bands out there. It’s not bad, quite fun at times, and I actually really like the female singer’s voice. But the male singer is bland, and to be honest the growler is kind of annoying. The chorus is kinda catchy, but other than that the song doesn’t do much for me.

Ok, bit of a fail on the round theme, at least compared to the others. It’s power metal with some growls thrown in. I mean, I liked it, it was interesting, catchy and upbeat but not really very experimental.

Nekov: Von Hertzen Brothers – Bring Out the Snakes
Rich 3.5 + Other 3.5 = 7.0

Ok, this song is really, really good! I really didn’t know what to expect from all the sound clips in the first minute or two, but when the song gets going it’s very good modern prog, and then the song just grows. They’ve got a great and pretty unique sound, and the song is very… I want to say surprising. In a good way. On my first listen it took me to places I didn’t expect but that I really enjoyed. Great stuff!

I don't know WHAT the hell that was, but it was some pretty cool shit.

Gorille:
Rich  + Other  =

TBC.

TBC.

The scores after round 5:
kingshmegland - 28
Nekov - 27.5
Heretic - 27
lonestar - 26.5
Zantera - 26
Ultimetalhead - 26
Marvellous G - 24.5
jingle.boy - 23.5

[Gorille85 – TBC…]

It’s all still to play for! There are two rounds left of the “group stage”. After this the top 4 will progress to the semi-finals. The rest of you WILL BE DESTROYED. But it’s very close now, with Nekov making a sudden surge and lonestar dropping a couple of places. Really, with two rounds left everyone has the potential to make the finals…

Round 6 – 2012
So, the world went and defied all expectations last year and didn’t end in December. As such, we are able to sit here in 2013 and celebrate the music from the last year. Send us something new from 2012 (i.e. no covers, live versions or re-recordings. New songs only!).

Well, you got the second highest score that round, and you're only 0.5 points off a qualifying place.

Most people struggle to really impress both me and my co-judge. Diego did bloody well this round (highest score so far) by sending something we both really liked.

Send us something “experimental”. Interpret that however you want, but we don’t mean the music has to be totally out there, but it should do something new, something a bit different.

Ok, bit of a fail on the round theme,

You two bozo's are like Carrey and Daniels.  :rollin  How do I fail at something that I interpret?  Like I said, clean male/female + growls, in a pop-melodic-metal genre is about as experimental as I get.  Oh well, I'm pushing the nose down from here on out.  Did Cyndi Lauper release anything last year?

I disagree to be honest, it's best to take a bit of time (not a huge amount, but a bit) to think about what to send that you think (1) fits the theme and (2) the person will like.

But yeah, songs are all in now, so results will be tomorrow. There will then be ONE MORE ROUND to try and position yourselves in the top 4!

Well, the thinking doesn't have to take that much time to be honest. Sometimes I check the theme for the next round, and then I try to think about it for a while, but still doing other things. So it's not like I freeze my whole day just to think about it, but just casually thinking about ideas for what to send here and there.

Generally it doesn't take long for me though. I have quite a library so I normally find things to send easily.

I'm with ya.  I could go nuts trying to find the "perfect" song amidst my 12,000 song library.  I narrow it down to about 5 once I've found a few, then just pick one.  Not like the strategy is working, but at least I get my pick in, and don't stress or waste time - mine or anyone elses.

RESULTS – ROUND 6 (2012)

Well, I thought this was a very strong round indeed! The lowest score I gave was a 2.5. I’m not sure my co-judge agrees with me though, I think he was a little less impressed on the whole…

Heretic: Twelve Foot Ninja – Silent Machine
Rich 3.5 + Other 2.5 = 6.0

I really, really like this! What a strange band – some djent stuff, some more middle of the road hard rock, and random other influences. I liked it so much that I checked out their debut full length album on Spotify, and I dig it a lot, very creative band! A bit of roughness in the production, but it’s only their first full length, so I’ll cut them some slack.

Interesting song, reminded me of the Cure. I don't like the Cure. But then it reminded me of Riverside a bit. Wasn't really keen on his vocal style, but overall it wasn't a bad song.

kingshmegland: Echolyn – Island
Rich 2.5 + Other 2.5 = 5.0

Pretty decent prog rock. There are some very cool ideas dotted throughout, but I’m afraid it doesn’t hold my attention as much as it does yours. It’s a long song, but it doesn’t feel particularly coherent. With these sorts of songs, they so often work better in the context of an album, so I can’t judge how much I’d like it in that sense, but as a standalone song it jumps around a bit too much without really building any momentum. Nice music in itself though.

16 minutes… it better be the greatest prog song I've ever heard. I don't know if the guy who arranged this song was doing his damnedest to be all over the place, but he's succeeded. After the smug beginning to this write-up, several minutes of pretty good shit went by, so I revised the score… but I had the opposite reaction to the commenters on Youtube to the ending. I found the final 5-7 minutes very "light beer" and revised my score again! This song went from a 2 to a 3 to a 2.5.

Marvellous G: Tallest Man on Earth – On Every Page
Rich 3.0 + Other 2.5 = 5.5

This is a really lovely song. I’ve heard a bit of Tallest Man before, and I’ve always found it pleasant but nothing that really grabbed me. This was gorgeous though, very emotive. It’s a simple song, but it gets by on the melodies, and on his vocal performance.

Pretty song. Though not much to it. Had a bit of a 60's folk vibe. Not something I'd pop on all the time but if I was drunk and depressed and needed some musical accompaniment, sure.

Jingle.boy: InVertigo – Darkness
Rich 3.0 + Other 2.0 = 5.0

This is probably the strongest song you’ve sent, I liked it a lot! It’s a bit long for what’s in it, maybe, but the music is nicely done, pretty engaging and performed well. The song develops quite nicely, and the bit where the synth sound comes in around 3:45 and the section that follows (chorus?) is one of those “nice surprises” that feel natural but aren’t predictable. Good stuff.

Another Riverside clone. I don't know, it wasn't bad, but the vocals didn't do much for me. To be honest, a pretty dull song. Sorry, sincerely especially since you probably think the opposite.

Ultimetalhead: Headspace – Stalled Armageddon
Rich 3.0 + Other 2.0 = 5.0

This is a good song; I’ve heard the whole album once before, and I have to say I found it fairly disappointing overall. This opening track is really solid though, moody intro, nice melodies, and so on. And I love Damian’s voice, so that’s always a plus.

Well, I do like Threshold (old and new), but sadly they just kinda wasted him here, like Satch on that disaster known as Chickenturd. I know it's prog, I get that it's supposed to be "proggy", but it's like the whole genre ran out of ideas a long, long time ago.

Zantera: Gazpacho – Hell Freezes Over I
Rich 2.5 + Other 2.0 = 4.5

This was nice, but I found it a bit nothingy. There’s a nice vibe, and it builds a little up to the chorus, but it never really climaxes. I feel like this has great potential that it doesn’t realise. Not a bad song by any means, though.

I feel like we're really regressing, not progressing, in this roulette. I guess there is to be balance between sending songs you think I'd like, and sending songs you like that you hope I like too. This wasn’t really for me.

Nekov: Forward Shapes – Proclivity
Rich 3.0 + Other 3.0 = 6.0

This is a really nice song. It starts as pretty simple symphonic rock, well executed with a great singer. But as the song progresses there are neat little touches and quirks, which make it a bit more exciting. Like I said, I love the singer’s voice, and the guitar and piano solos are nicely done as well. Another song that made me check Spotify to see if their album is on there. It is, but I haven’t had a chance to listen yet, so will report back later!

Hmm, this might be the first (fully) female-fronted submission this roulette? Sometimes simpler is better. Simple vocals, simple melodies, great piano. Good song.

lonestar: Mystery – Pride
Rich 2.5 + Other 2.5 = 5.0

Good lord, this sounds exactly like Rush at the start, right down to the vocals. :lol The song takes on its own identity later on, and does so quite nicely. There are some really good ideas in the middle of the song, but it does start to drag eventually. Good song, but didn’t hold my attention enough.

Well, of all the fancy-pants prog, this one moved me the most, despite it sounding just like Rush. It wasn’t great, but it was good. Nice guitar solo.

The scores after round 6:
Nekov - 33.5
kingshmegland - 33
Heretic - 33
lonestar - 31.5
Ultimetalhead - 31
Zantera - 30.5
Marvellous G - 30
jingle.boy - 28.5

Round 7 – Mini-Epic
A complaint both of us have had with some of the songs throughout this roulette is that some songs are a bit too long and don’t keep our attention. To rectify this, we are stealing a round from one of my own previous roulettes, the mini-epic. Send us something that you think is “epic” (be that in tone, feel, style, whatever you like) but is no more than 7 minutes long.

SPECIAL BONUS – GUESS THE MYSTERY JUDGE
As this is the final round before the playoffs, we’re giving a special bonus. Tell us who you think the mystery judge is. If you are correct, you will get an extra point. Of course, we’ll just include it in your score, so you won’t know that you got it until the roulette has come to an end, but it’ll increase your chances of reaching the playoffs!

The delay was genuinely caused by technical difficulties. :lol Got there in the end though!

It seems whatever I send it gets shitty score so I'll have to think hard about what to send next. Maybe a different approach like sending the worst song I know and it will get high score.

You're only 1 point off a qualification place, so I'd hardly say you're getting shitty scores. :lol

Maybe not, haha. Just a question though, is max score 5 points from each ref? So 10 in total if both give it a 5?
I don't remember seeing anything higher than 6 or maybe 7 in total, so either we all have horrible music tastes or you guys are pretty picky. :P

I'll think a bit about what to send for the last round though. I feel like there is a certain musical style that would benefit me scorewise but it's not really music I listen to that much anymore. I'll see what I can pick out of the hat.

The Rules:
 - The judges are me and a mystery second judge, who will remain secret for the duration of the competition. We will each score every song between 0.5 and 4, meaning a score between 1 and 8 per round.
Max score is 8. :P

Jingle.boy: InVertigo – Darkness
Rich 3.0 + Other 2.0 = 5.0

Another Riverside clone. I don't know, it wasn't bad, but the vocals didn't do much for me. To be honest, a pretty dull song. Sorry, sincerely especially since you probably think the opposite.

Actually, I'm kinda luke-warm on the song.  As I said, I had something better lined up, but figured since I loved it, you two would hate it.  I took the Costanza approach, and did the opposite of my instincts.  I can't finish any worse than last, and I actually didn't score the worst this round!  So something worked.

Methinks I'm throttling down this final round.

It might be harder with roulettes, but I'm always blown away by how hard it is for some people to keep their topX-lists updated. Take the "topX albums" for example, there is a waiting-list and you know pretty much when you will be up. It's really not that hard to start working on write-ups earlier than you post them, and sure the list might change in a few weeks or months, but not all of it.

Word!  I started doing mine back in November, so that when I was up, it was simply a matter of copy/pasting with enough of a stagger to let people digest and discuss.

Off topic, but oh well.

Good question. It's Wednesday now, so deadline is end of Saturday 26th.

If anyone can't meet deadline's, that should be their issue, not the issue for the 7 people that did.  No offense, but in business, if one person is 15 minutes late to a meeting, the meeting still starts on time.  Everyone that is on time shouldn't be penalized for one person that isn't.  Not trying to be insensitive to Heretic, it's just that his issues in being late shouldn't be given more importance than the 7 of us that were on time.

I understand your point, but ultimately this isn't business, it's a bit of fun on an internet forum, and if important stuff is going on in real life then I'd expect people to focus on that. I PMed him yesterday and he replied today to say he'll get something to me, so I'm going to give him a chance.

In this case I think it's OK. You put a deadline so people get on with stuff but if they had something important to do then you can be lenient. I'm pretty sure if Heretic had told Rich that he was drunk for the last 72hs while doing shenanigans he wouldn't be as understanding.

It doesn't bother me if it only happens once or twice, but generally every round is delayed due to someone being late. Now, you can solve this in many ways. Instead of basically screwing over the majority of people who sent their stuff on time, you can either skip the person who is late, or post write-up for that song later when it's sent, stand-alone and separate from the rest of the round.

I know in some cases, like with this roulette the participants have been chosen because they won earlier roulettes, but in many cases people want to be a part of the roulette, yet can't find 10 minutes to send a song.  :P

For sure, if someone was just being rubbish then I might be harder on them, but if there's serious real life stuff in the way then there's a bit of give.

I definitely agree with this, and that's what I did with Gorille when he went missing. But in this case, it was the final round that determines who makes the playoffs, so we would have to wait either way. :P

RESULTS – ROUND 7 (MINI-EPIC)

Jingle.boy: Hardline – In the Hands of Time
Rich 2.5 + Other 4.0 = 6.5

Nice song, but nothing that really jumps out at me. I think maybe I’m a bit young, and so with this 80s style of sound, I generally need something that grabs me a bit more, whereas while this was a very nicely done song, it felt quite run of the mill.

Yup, this might be the only 4 I give in the whole roulette. If I could have given higher, I would have. I have a couple musical g-spots; 80's big-hair type rock is one of them. I'm a big Journey/White Lion fan, so this song was already going to score well. Just a great damn song, vocally awesome, guitars fantastic. Outstanding choice.

kingshmegland: Pineapple Thief – Last Man Standing
Rich 3.0 + Other 3.0 = 6.0

I’m somewhat familiar with Pineapple Thief, but don’t have the album that this comes from. It’s a very good song, not the sort of thing I was expecting from this round but it certainly has a big feel, particularly aided by the strings. Think I’ll have to check this album out!

Typically these types of songs don't get much of a reaction from me, but this one moved along well, and I enjoyed it for the most part. Nothing blew me away, but it was a pretty good song.

Marvellous G: John Mayer – If I Ever Get Around to Living
Rich 2.5 + Other 2.5 = 5.0

I know some of Mayer’s stuff, and I’ve always quite liked it, but never really found it anything special. That sort of applies here as well, it’s a nice song, particularly lyrically, but nothing really stands out and grabs me. Plus, I don’t really find it at all “epic” in any sense – it strikes me as very laid back and relaxed.

Ok, so he can play and he can write pretty songs, but he's an arrogant, pretentious shmuck. That shouldn't affect my feelings for the music, and yet it does. On top of that, I find a lot of his stuff is a complete rip-off of decades gone by. Sure you can say that about many, if not most, pop artists, but it just stacks the deck against me liking his music. I can't fault you for submitting it so it scored as it did.

Zantera: Diablo Swing Orchestra – Mass Rapture
Rich 3.0 + Other 3.0 = 6.0

I know DSO pretty well, and although I haven’t listened to the latest album that often, I do know it already, so I have to limit my score. It’s a great track though, suitably bonkers, and a big epic feel. Builds up nicely towards the end as well! I love this sort of dark, quirky music, at least when it’s done well.

What a really neat track. It was odd, but nothing about it bothered me, in fact it got a few listens to make sure I hadn't missed anything. Very much enjoyed.

Ultimetalhead: Floater – 4 Down (A Toast)
Rich 2.5 + Other 2.5 = 5.0

Still not totally sold on Floater. I felt the same here as I did the last time you sent me one of their songs – I like it, it’s nice music, but it just seems to lack something. Don’t know if it’s the production, the vocals, what it is, because none of those things are bad, but it just doesn’t grab me as much as I feel like it should. Nice song, but not enough to change my mind about them.

Not as good as some of the other choices this round, but not bad. Pink Floydian in flow and style. Vocals were pretty awful though. I'd hate to think what this guy sounded like live. Still, not bad.

Nekov: Blind Guardian – The Curse of Feanor
Rich 3.0 + Other 2.0 = 5.0

Ok so I know BG very well already, and despite the cheesiness, I really like this album and the one that follows it. I think one thing I love about these albums (that put some people off) is how busy it is. Under the vocals there is loads going on in the guitars, and it’s very intricate. Definitely epic as well. But as with all submissions I’m very familiar with, score is limited to 3.

I've heard some Blind Guardian before, and it's always the vocals that end up forcing me to shut it off mid-song. He's like Chris de Burgh doing metal. YUCK. And their version of speed/power metal is so all over the place, they really need a singer who can grab me, not push me away. Sadly this song was more of what I've heard. Sorry.

lonestar: Absolute Priority – Dead Man Walking
Rich 2.5 + Other 3.0 = 5.5

Wow, this singer sounds exactly like Geoff Tate used to sound. :lol Not a bad song, some very nice ideas. Assuming they’re a new band, they have a lot of promise. I think they need to refine their sound a bit though, the song built nicely but I didn’t really feel like it was pulling me into it, and did seem to slip into Euro-metal clichés at times.

Starts out slow, but once they "hit it" at about 2:30 in, this song really does turn in to quite the epic. Seems you guys were holding your good stuff for the final rounds. Great soloing in this song, I enjoyed it.

Heretic: Cloudkicker – Oh, God
Rich 2.5 + Other 2.0 = 4.5

These guys have a huge sound. I really like the style, and the epic vibe, but as so often happens with instrumental music, I feel like there needs to be either more going on, or a vocal line. It picks up towards the end with the snazzy guitar part, but for the most part there’s not enough happening to grab my attention. Not bad though!

Oh god is right. This was the last band that I allowed this board to hype-dupe me into checking out. I've heard more inspired car alarms. Sorry, not for me.

The scores after round 7:
kingshmegland - 39
Nekov - 38.5
Heretic - 37.5
lonestar – 37
---------------------
Zantera - 36.5
Ultimetalhead - 36
Marvellous G - 35
jingle.boy – 35

So, a few changes in position, but the top 4 managed to do enough to cling on! Sorry to Jimmy, Justin, Tom and Chad, and thanks for sending some awesome music.

The playoffs will therefore be:

kingshmegland vs lonestar
Nekov vs Heretic

Incidentally, not one person has correctly guessed the mystery judge. :lol Heretic didn’t submit a guess, but an extra point would make no difference to the ranking or the playoff match up, so I’m moving on. I will post more detail about who was guessed at the end of the roulette.

Playoffs Semi-Finals – Open
No theme this time, you just need to impress us more than your opponent in order to make the final! Simple, right?

Yeah, I was too.  Wow - now I'm REALLY stumped, because I gave Rich two guesses. ???

Okay, as a Floater NUT... first off, IMO, this was not the best song Justin could've sent from the album that the song is from.  There are also MUCH better Floater "mini-epics" from their other albums.  I also have issues with "I'd hate to think what this guy sounded like live."  Um... Rob (their singer/bass guitarist) has blown the doors out of places with a cold AND a sore throat.  4 Down is MUCH better and longer live, but I still think it's a great song.  Just probably not the best song for that round, obviously.

Carry on! :)

Ariich, you should PM each person a different letter of the MJ's name. The first to deduce the name automatically gets 5 points.

I thought about sending Safety or Zero Hour (maybe even Tracks Across the Snow), but 4 Down finishes off that album so nicely that it seemed like the obvious choice. I almost cried at the complaints about the vocals though. Rob is fucking awesome. Also, I seemed to remember Rich quite liking Luddite when I sent it for his roulette, but maybe I'm remembering it wrong.

Well, I'm bummed that I missed out, but this was still great fun, and I'm very much looking forward to who the mystery judge is.  :)

Edit: Wow. I forgot. I ended up sending Matadors in a moment of pure misguided idiocy. Should have sent Luddite, but IIRC it was a "recent music" round, and that was the best option evidently.

Yeah, I can understand that - 4 Down does close Alter out pretty perfectly.

Yeah, me too - Rob is just amazingly outstanding at what he does.  So are Pete and Dave, though.

Edit: Wow. I forgot. I ended up sending Matadors in a moment of pure misguided idiocy. Should have sent Luddite, but IIRC it was a "recent music" round, and that was the best option evidently.

RESULTS – SEMI-FINALS

SEMI-FINAL 1 – HERETIC VS NEKOV

Heretic: The Butterfly Effect – Worlds on Fire
Rich 3.5 + Other 3.0 = 6.5

Seriously, how do you keep finding stuff that I’ve never even heard of before but really, really dig?! Quite a Muse vibe at the start especially, but the song grows and takes on its own identity. This has a bit of everything in it, from a mellow start, through post-rock, into some rocking riffing later on. Very nice stuff, and another of those songs that made me go straight to Spotify to see if the album is on there!

What a really, really interesting song. Damn. Horns, crunchy guitars. Just cool. Not many slowish songs moved me in this roulette, but I was moved.

Nekov: Iluvatar – In the Eye
Rich 2.5 + Other 2.5 = 5.0

Hmm, this isn’t a bad song, there are some nice ideas, but it really does sound so dated to me. Not just in terms of production, but in style and instrumentation as well. It goes on very long as well, but didn’t make me feel like there was enough variety of sound. Pleasant music undoubtedly, but I found myself losing interest about half way through.

This one was tough to score less than Heretic's. It has so much of what I like, especially being keyboard-driven. A strong guitar here and there, but there was just something about it. It was too much keyboards, it was drowning in that same riff over and over. Was just too much. And the tone he used was a bit of a Rush rip off that gave it this 80\90's vibe. Like Red Sector A or Show Don't Tell. (Apologies, I named the wrong rush tunes I'm trying to use as examples) I feel this song was THIS close to being great they just over did it.

WINNER: HERETIC

SEMI-FINAL 2 – KINGSHMEGLAND VS LONESTAR

kingshmegland: Demians – Earth
Rich 3.0 + Other 2.5 = 5.5

I found two things interesting in this submission: 1) you chose to send the bonus track from the album, and 2) in your description you neglected to mention that Nic is a former DTFer! :P Otherwise, great submission; even though it’s a bonus track it’s a great song in its own right. Catchy and engaging, and really nicely done. I’m very familiar with it already though I’m afraid, so only 3 points for you.

These guys used to be board members, or one of them was, right? Good vocals, good harmonies and probably a better-crafted song than lonestar’s selection, I just liked his better. I guess I was supposed to be impressed by some of the deliberate tempo changes and slow-los. Instead I found them a little off-putting.

lonestar: Odd Dimension – Farewell to the Stars
Rich 2.5 + Other 3.0 = 5.5

This song really disappointed me, because the first 20 seconds really, really grabbed me, and I was all ready to be blown away by some awesome prog metal. But when the vocals came in, the song went a bit downhill. Not that it was bad at all, in fact there are some really good bits, but the song doesn’t hold together all that well, and I find the singer really quite annoying. Far too much vibrato. :lol

The song started pretty weak, but finished incredibly strong. I backed certain parts up and did them over and over. It's nothing really new, it’s just a great track. Right at 3:40 or so they really take off. The singer is really familiar sounding.

WINNER: IT’S A TIE! :O

Which can only mean one thing…

A REMATCH!
Send another song each please.

Heretic is through to the final, but he will not know who his opponent is until the rematch is done.

RESULTS - REMATCH

kingshmegland: This Day And Age – Always Straight Ahead
Rich 3.5 + Other 2.0 = 5.5

Such a nice song, maybe even better than the one you sent me before! I never got round to checking these guys out properly due to lack of them on Spotify, but I think I’ll just have to buy something.

Consistently I think in this roulette I've been after edgier, harder and angrier. This could be a theme song for one of those Disney Channel teen dramas. Not my cup of tea. Hope Rich liked it.

lonestar: Mechanical Poet – Old Year’s Merry Funeral
Rich 2.5 + Other 3.0 = 5.5

This is quite fun, sort of quirky prog. It seemed to jump around quite a bit though and didn’t really hold my attention, and I wasn’t too keen on the singer – although he’s better than your previous submission. :P

This is the better of the two for me. Up-beat, crunchy. Vocals were a bit meh, but the song was really catchy – with a better singer I think this could have been great.

WINNER: STILL A TIE DAMMIT
We have no way to decide between you, so we’re opening it up to everyone. The thread now has a poll added. It will be open for one day, and results won’t show until it’s finished. Links to the semi-final songs are below. GET VOTING PEOPLE!

Finally a decision! :lol

So here we go then...

FINAL - HERETIC VS LONESTAR

Who will be crowned Champion of Champions? And who will have to settle for the quite awesome but less prestigious title of Runner Up of Champions?

One problem with song roulettes is that it’s often hard to choose which song to send by a band you love. Sometimes there’s not just one song that encapsulates all that’s great about the band. Well that’s not going to be a problem for this final. Send us two or three (your choice, so choose wisely) songs by the same band or artist, to give as much of an impression of them as possible, and to entice into wanting to hear more!

Good luck to both of you!

I was thinking about making another one where the judgement to the song provided by the champions will come as an average of the ratings and reviews given by every member who would like to contribute. Could be a tought thing to handle, but I can see it becoming a worthy show too  :tup

Mechanical Poet is cool, but I did kind of get tired of the vocal stylings after a few listens.

Woodland Prattlers is still a pretty great album though.

Once he sends, I'll post the list of who was guessed for the identity of the mystery judge, and how many people guessed them (including non-particpants).

One question: is this like, pick your favorite band and send three of their songs? Because my favorite band is a band you're already very familiar with, Rich. So I'm assuming pick a favorite that's fairly obscure even if it's not your TRUE favorite?

Also good luck to you too lonestar! I think you'll probably end up winning which I am super cool with, getting this far was something I never even expected in the first place so I'm VERY humbled haha.

Doesn't have to be your absolute favourite band, Heretic. Just a band that you love that you think we might not know and therefore would enjoy exploring/discovering. For me personally, that's what these roulettes are all about - discovering amazing new music!

Right, the songs are in, which means I can tell you who the mystery judge isn't! Here are the guesses, and how many people including non-participants guessed them:

GuitarCozmo: 5
black_floyd: 3
DTVT: 1
RobWebster: 1
lateralus88: 1
hefdaddy42: 1
BlobVanDam: 1
Jordan Rudess: 1

I think it's important to note that of the 5 people who guessed GuitarCozmo, one of them was even Coz himself. :lol

RESULTS – FINAL (PART ONE)

Ok, so here are my thoughts.

Lonestar – IQ (Frequency, The Seventh House, Common Ground)

I’ve never really listened to IQ before. I think I heard one song once, and it didn’t really interest me at all, and so I sort of wrote them off as a second tier prog band. These three songs haven’t elevated them to top tier as such, but I feel that I know much more about their sound now and, actually, they’re pretty good. Nice melodies, tasteful playing, generally quite a good feel. Maybe slightly middle of the round, in that nothing particularly stands out, and as with some of your previous submissions, the songs feel a little unnecessarily long. But nicely done, and pleasant to listen to.

Favourite of the three: Frequency

Score: 2.5

Heretic – Kvelertak (Blodtřrst, Utrydd dei svake, Offernatt)

I have absolutely no idea what’s going on, but this is really enjoyable! Not sure I really get that much of a punk vibe, but the blend of black metal and straight forward rock’n’roll works surprisingly well, and their playing is really very, very slick. The big downside is that it does get quite grating after a while. :lol It has definitely entertained me enough to want to check out their album, and as I get used to their style I may start to love it, but right now three songs in a row was a bit much, and the middle one in particular didn’t hold my attention so well.

Favourite of the three: Offernatt

Score: 2.5

So, basically, I genuinely can’t decide between these two bands. They’re almost the polar opposites of each other, but each has its own qualities and downsides, and really I can’t decide. So, over to the mystery judge to cast the deciding vote…

I like both bands, but I like IQ more.  They also have a deeper catalog for lonestar to go with.  Frequency was a good call, and you probably didn't want to bombard him with the super long epics.

I sent a variety of IQ, Frequency is right in the middle. Seventh House is 15 minutes, and Common Ground is a short(by IQ standards) piece. Felt that the three give a good overview of what the band has to offer.

Final Write Up by ~mystery~

Probably a bit of a let down for most, finding out that "yours truly" was the ~mystery~ judge. Jingle, should be kicking himself. I practically gave it away in the second to last week when, after being eliminated (despite getting a 4), I was spinning his hair 80's band in the "What Full Length Album Did You Just Listen To" thread. Curious timing.

But to the winner.

Heretic - you sent us some crazy punk. Not my thing brother. It was risky and worth a shot that you might catch me on a good day. The music was excellent but the starts and stops bothered me, as did the vocals. And I can handle harsh vocals. They were just too wacky. I don't know how Rich scored them at the time of this writing but I suspect he didn't much care for them either. He's a bit more on the gentler vocal side than I so I wonder if you really were taking a risk or throwing ol'Lonestar a bone. I guess you can all can debate that until the next Tourney of Champs.

Lonestar - Winner, but only barely. That is to say, your 70's prog band barely beat a crusty-vocalled punk band. It was good, and had good parts - nice bass and great keys. But dreadfully droning vocals. Perhaps all good prog bands suffer from questionable vocals but it's a good thing they went on long scenic passages. Reminded me of a YES "light" in some spots.

If I had to score these in the regular rounds they'd probably both have gotten 2.0 -2.5 's respectively. But I had to choose a winner.

It is Lonestar.

Congratulations - you are the Roulette Champion of Champions at DTF. Make yourself a t-shirt, ice a cake with those very words and eat it.

****of course.....I wasn't really in it. Neither was Rich. And neither was Raven....omissions that may take some of the luster off your shiny trophy****

Thanks to all who participated. Great Music was shared and discussed and that's really what this board has always been about.
