Title: Lolzeez's Top 50 Albums! v. THE NUMBER ONE + ending
Post by: Lolzeez on December 06, 2012, 01:08:21 PM
It's my turn now! Hey,all the cool kids do a top 50 albums list so i thought to myself:"Hey Lolzeez, get off your ass and look back at your 50 favorite albums of all time!" And here I am! Also just a little side note here: This list is mostly prog rock and jazz fusion oriented. So if you don't like any of those then you're not gonna like this list. Also I might have some weird picks, but hey isn't that what makes a top 50 list enjoyable? Oh btw my write ups are terrible and most of them were written at 3AM when i can't get sleep. So yeah. I'm gonna post my first three albums tomorrow. (Tomorrow for me at least...)

Looking forward to this as I'm a huge prog rock fan. I love jazz fusion but I'm not too familiar with the genre so hopefully this list will help me discover some great albums.

And we begin! Btw my writeups suck. So yeah.

50)Spock's Beard-V (2000)

This album right here is their best album. I've listened to every studio/live album and this is what i think. Every song on here is good besides the bloody awful "All On A Sunday". Songs like The Great Nothing or At The End Of The Day summarize what Spock's Beard can do. But this album has my all time favorite by these guys. Thoughts Part 2. Holy crap. This song right here is my favorite by them. It starts out quite mellow kind of like a balad and then goes into badass instrumental mode. I love the chorus and the great work on the keyboards. Still,I'd like the song to be longer. Uhh yeah!

Favorite songs:At The End Of The Day,Thoughts Part 2,The Great Nothing

49)Herbie Hancock-Head Hunters (1973)

One of my first jazz albums. The entire album is very enjoyable. It really is. Very consistent. This isn't really an album for listening, this is an album that you put on when you're chilling or studying or something. It really shines there. By the way Chameleon might be the sexiest song ever written. That song is so awesome. Probably my favorite in the whole album. Watermelon Man is also quite cool. Sly is an amazing song as well!  Well i dont have much to say other than that i need to get a better condition vinyl. My copy is so worn out and used it's not even funny.

Favorite Songs: Chameleon and Sly are like the first jazz songs that i loved. (When i was 9)

48)Grateful Dead-Live Dead (1969)

Might be one of my favorite live albums. They really play their ass off. Seriously, i don't even know any names to their studio albums. I just listen to this. It's awesome. Dark Star is just dream like. How do they come up with this shit? Cause it rocks! Only thing that i dont like is the "song" called Feedback. Cause it is what the title says. Just feedback from guitar and some other sounds to form a jam. It's quite eerie too. Some people don't mind it but i never understood it. Am I stupid? Nah i don't think so..

Favorite songs: Dark Star,St. Stephen,Turn On Your Lovelight

You know the list will be good when V is the first one to come up.  :tup

I'm surprised that one of your all time favorite albums has a bloody awful song on it, though.  :lol I've always liked All on a Sunday, it's so joyful and pretty. Unfortunately, I've had problems with The Great nothing from the day one, and I still consider it a little bit overrated - there are many Spock's beard epics that I like better. That song aside, the entire album is amazing.

Because it's nice and joyful and stuff. It is probably the worst on the album though, but it's not a bad song by any means, at least in my opinion.

It has a bloody awful song but the rest makes up for it. And I wanted to put one Spock's Beard album in so yeah... Either this or Black Sabbath's Master Of Reality was gonna make the cut.

WOOT NEXT THREE!!!!

47)Focus-Moving Waves (1971)

Man this is a cool album! Found this at a goodwill and was told that this was a great album by my friend. This person usually joked around with me making me buy crappy albums and laughing at me.For example he got me into ELP and said that Love Beach was their best album. I'm not kidding. Then i bought that… Yeah… Don't worry i know which ELP albums are good now. (Might show up later…) Back to Focus. Well this album is actually amazing. The first song,Hocus Pocus is their biggest hit. It's a kind of funny song with the funny vocals. But the drums are complex and the guitar by Jan Akkerman are absolutely some of the best I've ever heard. That riff… The rest of the album are also amazingly good. Focus 2 is a quite good ballady instrumental. I'm quite fond of that one. But the epic of the album,Eruption steals the show. 23 minutes of beauty. Pretty much. I'd rank it up there with songs like Close To The Edge,Supper's Ready,Echoes,Karn Evil and so on. Love this album and you MUST listen to this band.

Favorite songs: Hocus Pocus,Focus 2,Eruption aka musical orgy

46)Dixie Dregs-Dregs Of The Earth (1980)

Yes. This is my favorite Dixie Dregs album. Not What If. Why you may ask? I answer T Lavitz. In my opinion he fits the band much better than Mark Parrish. I don't have much to say tbh. I really love the album opener called "Road Expense". Being my first song by the band, it got my pretty hyped. Pride O' The Farm is quite funny. The song has a countryish sound. Kinda cool. Really love what T Lavitz does on here. The keyboard has a western feel which is really cool. The song "I'm Freaking Out" is probably my favorite Dixie Dregs song. It's a really jazzy and groovy song. Same can be said about the whole damn album. It's very jazzy. Explains why i really love this album i suppose.

Favorite Song:I'm freaking out

45)Ayreon-The Human Equation (2004)

Thank you to everyone that sent this to my roulette. I love you. This album is fantastic. This is the stuff that will be remembered 30 years from now. We're gonna call this the classical music of our times. This shit is gonna be considered some of the most genius shit of our times. This album has many talented people that know how to use their talents. James Labrie,Devin Townsend,Mikael Akerfeldt, the "women" (idk who they are but they can sing) This album also has some of the greatest keyboard work I've ever heard of. I'm 100% sure that this album will grow bigger on me in a couple months going even up to my top 30s. Fucking adore this.

Favorite songs: I don't know any song names yet believe it or not. Laugh if you want. I just listened to this last week. But yeah. I love it.

44)Marillion-Misplaced Childhood (1985)

This album along with Nurcery Cryme introduced me to what we call "progressive music". Both of them are very special albums for me. Today i'm gonna talk about this one. (Lolwut talk? Are you kidding me? This is just text Lolzeez…) This album is actually my favorite album by this band. Yes. Kind of a stupid choice when the two previous albums are much better. And i agree with that. Fugazi and Script are both better than this album. It's just that this album holds a special place in my heart. Like most people my first song by this band was the single "Kayleigh". I love that song. But for me,the best part of the album starts out after Lavender. Bitter Suite. Love that song. From the intro to the end where it leads to Heart Of Lothian. Which is another one of the best songs on the album. But Blind Curve is my favorite song by Marillion. Can't beat that. The lyrics, that intro. Seriously. Impossible not to go crazy to how good this damn song is! Anyways just buy a vinyl copy and enjoy.

Favorite songs: Kayleigh,Bitter Suite,Heart Of Lothian,Blind Curve

43)Demon Fuzz-Afreaka (1970)

I'd say go buy a vinyl of this album but then the vinyl is like worth 350 dollars. This album is rare as hell. So yeah… This album is like a Jazz Rock/Jazz Fusion type of album. It's one of those. You might not like it when you listen to it first but sometime the album catches up to you. Around 4:06 of the first song called Past,Present And Future i got hooked. Mercy is also a really cool song. The song has like a Blood Sweat & Tears feel to it. But much better than anything by that band. And I've been a fan of BST for a while now. The next songs are very good too. Hymn To Mother Earth is a fantastic song. Highly recommended. Just look it up…

Favorite Songs: Past,Present And Future,Mercy,Hymn To Mother Earth

42)Pink Floyd-The Wall (1979)

The epic, the monster. Anyone that hasn't listened to this album is MISSING OUT on not only some good music, but also an outstanding storyline. Couple years back,i used to be obsessed with this album. Even recording a music video for Hey You for school. (I can't seem to find it :/ ) Seriously, this album is a masterpiece. Especially live. This album is pretty much a beast live. In fact i'd go as far as saying that it's not too enjoyable anymore after having seen Roger Waters live back in 2005. Still, i'm gonna see him next year (2013) August 3rd. Can't wait. In conclusion, this album should be listened by anyone. And one last thing, the second vinyl is MUCH better.

Favorite Songs: Mother,Hey You,Comfortably Numb,Run Like Hell,The Trial

Misplaced Childhood is great but not one of my favorite Marillion albums. I'm more of a Hogarth fan. Haven't heard the second album but it sounds cool so I'll look into it. As for The Wall, it used to be one of my favorite albums when I first started getting into Floyd and prog in general. I still like it but I prefer WYWH, Animals, and DSOTM.

4 albums! GO GO GO!

41)Rush-Hemispheres (1978)

Awesome album. Cygnus X-1 Book 2 is a legendary song and the best on the album. But i really dig Circumstances. I just love the chorus. The drumming is awesome and every track is a masterpiece on his own. I guess writing favorite songs would be worthless since there are only 4 songs and i already told you that Cygnus X-1 Book 2 is my fav. Apart from that,i really like the album cover… Yeah not a ton to say about this album.. Just go and listen!

Ps:Short and bad writeup. I know.

40)Camel-Mirage (1974)

This damn album kicks ass more than any other Camel album. I just love this album. The album opener,Freefall is one of my favorite album openers ever. Such melodic and exciting. I also love the next song, Supertwister. All i can say is "Dat flute". The third song is a little epic song called Nimrodel/The Procession/The White Rider. I love that damn song. My fav on the album. Yes i like it more than Lady Fantasy. Funny cause those are my top 2 Camel songs. Earthrise, the song in between these epics is quite good as well. Love the guitar in that one and how it mixes with the keyboards. Well i like every song on the album so yeah… But my favorite song is Nimrodel/The Procession/The White Rider. Make sure to hunt down a vinyl copy! Like i did. Bought it from the hippie i bought the DT promo picture disc. He's got some cool stuff.

Favorite song:Nimrodel/The Procession/The White Rider

39)Genesis-Foxtrot (1972) <3

My favorite band is,if you didnt know,Genesis. I really love this album but i find it overrated. Just because it has Supper's Ready (Third fav Genesis song) doesn't mean that it should be up there with errrr… I shouldn't give names… Still i love this album. Classics like Watcher Of The Skies and Can Utility are almost as good as Supper's Ready. Love both those songs. Supper's Ready itself is one of the best prog rock epics that I have heard of. I love that song. Almost perfection. Oh and the solo sections are just as amazing as the previous album. Great album, highly recommended.

Favorite Songs:Supper's Ready,Can Utility,Watcher Of The Skies

38)Yes-Relayer (1974)

This album right here is better than Close To The Edge. In my assholeish opinion. I really like the songs on here. This was my first Yes album. So it has a special place in my heart. Aka fanboyism. The Gates Of Delirium is perfect. Simply put. My second favorite Yes song. God,i love everything. From the keyboards to the bass to the guitar to the damn drumming to the ahhh the song is perfect! Sound Chaser is also another one of my favorites. Very fun to listen to. To Be Over is a great addition to the album cause if the album had another epic song it'd be too tiring to listen to. Good choice by the band. Still it manages to be mind blowingly good. -SPOILER- There is another Yes album coming up…

Favorite song:The Gates Of Delirium

Oh and btw try to guess albums that will show up later on the list. And please no obvious albums like Scenes,Images & Words,Dark Side Of The Moon,Nurcery Cryme,The Divine Wings Of Tragedy,In The Court Of The Crimson King,Wish You Were here and... well i just spoiled some albums now didn't i? Nah. They wouldn't even be a surprise when they showed up anyways.

What a list, those are four essential prog rock albums. I kinda got tired of Foxtrot, but the other three are also favorites of mine. Especially Mirage, top 50 album for me as well.

I really love Circumstances, my favourite on album after The Trees. Great that they brought it back to live set after almost a 30 year break to Snakes & Arrows Tour.

Wow, nice. Four great albums.

Nimrodel/The Procession/The White Rider is a fantastic song. Should be considered a prog classic. I also prefer Relayer to Close to the Edge.

Not a fan of Hemispheres, mainly because of the title track that doesn't live up to it's predecessor. And imo the lyrics are terrible. I'll take Book I every time. The rest of the album is good though.
I love Misplaced Childhood and all the Fish albums.
Camel- prefer Nude but Mirage is good.
Not much of a PF fan.
Not much of a Genesis fan.
Yes I like though, and this is one of their best.

Nice pick with the Marillion.  Never could get into the Hogarth stuff.  Fish was unique.  And yes, Misplaced Childhood holds a special place in my heart as well.  I can't even listen to just one song, either.  If I hear it, I have to listen to the whole thing.  The second half (there are no "sides" anymore with the departure of vinyl) is better in my opinion.  The liner notes in the remastered version gives a great insight into how Fish wrote the album (hint: lots of inner turmoil and LOTS of drugs).

Nice call, Scorp.  In fact, the title track just came up on my iPod!!  I always have it on when I'm in the office at my desk, on a little speaker mount.

Would anyone classify Peter Gabriel as "prog"?  If so, would that include all his albums?  Because "Passion" is definitely in my Top 10 albums of all time.

37)Dream Theater-A Dramatic Turn Of Events (2011)

Hey Lolzeez where the fuck is DT? Well here you go. ADTOE. One of the best albums i've heard in ages. This is just great. You know what this is so i won't write a proper write up (like my other write ups are proper..) and plus i'm tired. I'm a slacker indeed.

Favorite Songs:Outcry,Bridges In The Sky,Breaking All Illusions

36)Brand X-Unorthodox Behaviour (1976)

It hasn't even been 6 months since i discovered Brand X. I learned about them through Phil Collins and loved them for the great guitar work from John Goodsall, the nice bass from Percy Jones and the underrated keyboard player Robin Lumley. I love this band. The drumming is fantastic from Phil Collins and Born Ugly is some of the grooviest shit around. Some people might like the following two albums but i just like their debut more. It's probably the song "Born Ugly".

Favorite song:Born Ugly

35)Pink Floyd-Animals (1977)

Man,this album right here. It kicks major ass. With 3 mighty epics, this album is pretty much Pink Floyd's final really "prog" album. Songs like Dogs,Sheep and Pigs (Three Different Ones) kick ass. Oh wait. Those are all the damn songs! (Pigs on the wing isn't a song more like an intro and outro) But my favorite has to be Pigs (Three Different Ones),That damn intro always gives me goosebumps. The vocal delivery is also awesome. There is also like an instrumental section that kicks ass all the way through. I also love Dogs. It's a great epic with amazing guitar work. Probably one of my favorites of all time.

Favorite Song:Pigs (Three Different Ones)

34)Porcupine Tree-Deadwing (2005)

This album kicks ass. My second fav PT album. The title track starts out the album very well and i actually enjoy Lazarus. But like everyone,my favorite is Arriving Somewhere…But Not Here. It's probably my second favorite PT song. (You can guess the first one ofc)
The album is really fun too. I really enjoy Halo. The bass on that song is amazing. The last 2 songs (Start of Something Beautiful and Glass Arm Shattering) are also quite amazing. Shallow is a fun song too. Every song on here i actually love besides Open Door. So i guess I don't need to write favorite songs.

Least Favorite Song:Open Door

33)Guru Guru-Kanguru (1972)

Purchasing this album was probably one of the greatest choices that I have ever done. It was either this or "Welcome Back My Friends" the live album by ELP. I found the live album many more times and bought that later. I got this album for a little too much though. Still,it deserves it. Every song on here kicks ass. Every damn song kicks ass. I love the side two of the album more though. I don't know why. The album really caught my interest with the 3rd song called Baby Cake Walk. Often considered the best song on the album, this song was the first song that got me really interested in the band. I'm currently listening to their discography

Favorite Song:Baby Cake Walk

A little journey to the year 1970...

32)Emerson Lake & Palmer-Emerson Lake & Palmer (1970)

This album i bought for a pound when i went to England and it was in great condition. And then i got home 2 weeks later. I saw Greg Lake was in the band so i gave it a shot. DAT OPENER THE BARBARIAN! Holy crap i love this song. Short and fun. It has the Keith Emerson feel to it. Not wankery and quite groovy! Oh and btw does anyone know how many hands this guy has? He's fucking gifted! Take A Pebble is also a great song. When you don't feel well, just listen to this song and relax. It works. Lake is such a genius! Knife Edge has a very cool and simple riff but it works. It might one of the catchiest songs by ELP.  The next side opens up with the best song on the album. And maybe *flame wall* the best ELP song of all time,Three Fates.  The song opens up in a creepy ass way with that devilish piano. This song defines Emerson and what kind of a musician he is. Pretty much mind blowing. The song also ends with a BOOM! I love it. Tank is also a really cool instrumental. That drum solo man. That fucking drum solo. And Lucky Man… Yeah. I guess the "hit". I really like this song. It's very catchy but the moog solo at the end is kinda out of place. Anyhow it's still a great song. You know what? From now on I'm gonna write only one song as my favorite song. Cause It's too hard choosing a second song.

Favorite Song:Three Fates

31)Genesis-Trespass (1970)

The most underrated prog rock album of all time. Pretty much. Get off your ass and listen to Trespass! It's an amazing album. Every damn song is fun to listen to and is unique on its own. I love "Looking For Someone" probably my favorite. The next song, White Mountain is also gorgeous. I love the chorus a lot for some reason. It isn't even that great of a chorus. I just like how it fits the music. The Knife is often considered the best song on the album but in my opinion it's my third favorite right behind White Mountain. I just think that it's kind of overrated. Though it must be better live. I only saw Looking For Someone live by some tribute band. It was still great. Well yeah. That's all for this album.

Favorite Song:Looking For Someone

Trespass is pretty sweet.  :azn: The ELP debut I do not enjoy, although I haven't given it a spin in years - last thing I remember, I was fighting not to fall asleep while listening to it. It just didn't work out.  :-\

30)Symphony X-The Devine Wings Of Tragedy (1997)

Currently running a survivor on this. You might be surprised since this IS the only SX album on here. I know I am. But yeah, this is pretty much I&W for SX. I absolutely love the opener "Of Sins And Shadows". A perfect way to open up any album. Sea Of Lies is also great, keeping up the blood pleasure. But i really love The Accolade. Being the mini epic and balladish song of the album,it kicks ass. Russell Allen's vocals kick ass on this track. And for some reason 3:00 to 3:10 reminds me the intro to Watcher Of The Skies by Genesis. Am I the only one? Probably. Also the title track is the best song by SX period. From the intro to the outro, this song is prefect. Candlelight Fantasia is also one of the most underrated songs by the band. It's a ballad and a really good one. Closes the album very nicely.

Favorite song:Title track

29)Pink Floyd-Dark Side Of The Moon (1973)

This album is best experienced as a whole. Seriously is there anything not already said about this album? It's a masterpiece. I'm proud that humans can have this much talent. Yeah. Us And Them. Yeah. Best song on the album. Yeah. I really like Time though. Yeah. Money is fun too. Yeah. I shouldn't be writing at 3AM. Yeah.

Favorite Song:Us And Them

28)Haken-Visions (2011)

Ahhh Haken. You blew me away like a fat kid's fart after eating a gigantic cake on his birthday. And that's a good thing. I really hope these guys have a huge future. I adore this album and so should you. Kind of reminds me of I&W in a way too. It has this feel that after their first album, they finally found a sound unique to them and now they're trying to perfect it. If Aquarius is gold, this is uhhmmm whatever is better than gold. Premonition fading into Nocturnal Conspiracy,i guess the first song that i've heard from Haken. It blew me away. The way that the song is very calm and then explodes 3 minutes in is absolutely fantastic. Oh and btw i love the vocals. I saw a review that talked about the vocals being mediocre and all i have to say is… No matter who you are and no matter where you are,YOUR OPINION SUCKS! GAH! Ok I'm done. The next songs are very good as well. This is a very consistent album. Insomnia is a great song too. I really like the solo section on that song. Very Rudess like. I actually prefer this to ADTOE If you noticed btw. Yeah. The title track is some of the coolest epic songs that I've ever heard of. It really makes the whole album connect. I love it. I love the reprises as well. So yeah.

Favorite Song:Visions (duh)

27)Rush-Permanent Waves (1980)

YUP! This is THAT high on my list. Often considered the last good Rush album,(just kidding. It's my opinion. You don't like it? Good.) there's something special about this album for me. It has this cheerful vibe to it that i really love. Spirit Of Radio is a really catchy single. And I love it. Freewill has some amazing bass. Jacob's Ladder is some epic shit. I love it. Natural Science is also one of my favorites by the band. Well not much to say about this album. Also, this was my first Rush album. Got it for very cheap on vinyl and have been enjoying it ever since! Perfect album for that nice saturday night.

Favorite Song:Natural Science

This is the most predictable top 50 so far, but I'm still loving it.  ;D Especially because this has to be the list from which I've heard the most albums so far.

26)Morphine-Cure For Pain (1993)

Ever heard of Morphine? You know the songs "Thursday" and "Candy"? Yeah. These guys made those songs. This trio of bass, sax and drums works perfectly. The absolute groove of this album makes it PERFECT to listen to in a long car ride when it's raining. It's also quite difficult to make an album with no black sheep songs. But damnit they succeeded. Also, the order of the songs is amazing. For some reason i really love the transition of the songs. A classic album isn't complete without classic tracks. Candy,Thursday, the title track and Buena are some of the best songs on the album. But my favorite will always be Thursday. It's just that bass line man!

Favorite Song:Thursday

25)Bruford-One Of A Kind (1979)

The only Bill Bruford solo album that i own. And i was expecting something like Yes. But oh hell no. This was something special. Just check out the freaking musicians in this album! Jeff Berlin,Allan Holdsworth and Dave Stewart! Hell yes! Songs like The Sahara Of Snow are also amazing. They sum up what jazz fusion is all about. Being groovy and not turning the whole song into a wankery soup. And they did one hell of a job! I bought this album for so cheap on vinyl that i actually felt sorry for the seller. Cmon man! You should have kept this! Maybe it was an angry girlfriend? I don't know what was going on in that guy's head. Anyways just check this album out if you like Yes and King Crimson and some jazz fusion. Go for it!

Favorite Song:All of the album is good but i really like The Sahara Of Snow

And nice call on Permanent Waves (my favorite Rush album), SX, Haken, and DSOTM.

24)Godspeed You! Black Emperor-Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven (2000)

I don't know what this is. I just like what i hear. 4 epics. All are awesome. This kind of music i listen to when i relax when i come back home from school. It's good and relaxing. Also, the intro to the track "Storm" is awesome. It gets me hyped up every damn time. Not much to tell about this song. Thanks /mu/!  And yeah. This is a quite awful writeup. But music is meant to be heard. Not read. So just close your eyes, sit back and enjoy.

Favorite Song:Storm

23)Mahavishnu-Birds Of Fire (1973)

One of the most polished jazz fusion albums that i know of. I actually like this album more than their debut.  Billy Cobham's drumming is definitely one of the higher points. Tbh this is one of the most fun albums EVER to listen to. I can easily make it to the end without skipping anything. Very consistent imho. The groove is perfect and i just like what i hear. One of my first fusion albums and one of the best from the genre.

22)Jethro Tull-Thick As A Brick (1972)

A legendary epic album. I recently saw it live and now i just like it even more. Ian Anderson is a genius. He's like this insanely badass doctor wizard guy. This album pretty much defines Ian Anderson. Even though I love this album, there's still one album from Jethro Tull that i enjoy more. Yes the one that comes on your mind first. Anyways this album has that feeling that makes you take the album seriously. You appreciate it more than some average album from Jethro Tull. The sound of the album, how epic it is will really leave a huge impact. Highly recommended. Even if it didn't click with you, just try.

21)Frank Zappa-We're Only In It For The Money (1968)

This album kicks ass. Crazy, funny, sarcastic and very innovative sounds. All kinds of burps, farts and sound effects. Hilarious. When i first listened to this album,i had a cassette tape of it and was taking a dump. It was epic. Now,this isnt everyone's cup of tea. When you listen to the album start to finish,it really kicks ass. However, this isnt an album where you can just pick your favorite track and listen to that one song. It doesn't work that way. Also, keep in mind. This isn't my favorite Zappa album. Well, that's all i got to say.

Favorite Track: Well,i like the album as a whole but "Hot Poop"" is the greatest song name ever.

20)King Crimson-In The Court Of The Crimson King (1969)

Come on. You know what this is. Pretty much the first "prog rock" album. (I don't think that Sgt. Pepper's is prog) The way these guys mixed rock and jazz was probably mind blowing at the time. Schizoid Man is one of the greatest albums openers of all time. It just grabs you inside the world of prog rock. I bet at the time, hippies listened to this and went apeshit. The second song,I Talk To The Wind is also an underrated gem. I love Lake's vocals here. He's one of my favorite vocalists for sure. The flute fits the song perfectly and gives it that feel. Epitaph has an amazing intro. Mind blowingly good.  Lake's vocals here are perfection. Even though a ton of people like the title track or the album opener, this one has to be my favorite. It's not flashy and for some reason, made me feel smart listening to it. It's that weird feel that good music gives you. Moonchild is also a very cool song. Different but good nonetheless. The title track was one of my first prog songs ever. That creepy atmosphere just makes my day every damn time. Amazing album.

Favorite Song:Epitaph

Yeah. "The other album" from Jethro Tull. Seriously, this album is a masterpiece in the land of masterpieces. The consistency is just mind blowing. My God has to be my favorite song here. I saw it live last september and it blew me away. Seriously, these guys have some talent. My father always told me to listen to this album when i was 12. I never actually got into Jethro Tull. I actually got really into them this year. Even though I really wanted to have Passion Play on this list,i could not add it. Which is sad cause i LOVE that album to death. Well i'm going off topic. Seriously haven't you all listened to this album? Why are you reading this?

Back in my HS days, Aqualung was a huge mainstay for me.  The album strikes a perfect balance between light and shade, with airy acoustic songs and passages blending seamlessly with killer heavy riffs.

18)Frank Zappa-Hot Rats (1969)

Sometimes, certain albums just suck you in. They make you a fan. You listen to the album to death. And then you buy the vinyl. And love it even more. And then you get into the genre. Nuff said. Amazing album. First two tracks are perfect. And the rest follows up nicely. This album, while tiring to listen to, is amazing and the best Zappa album ever.

Favorite song:Willie The Pimp

16)Al Di Meola-Elegant Gypsy (1977)

Some of the best instrumentation work ever. It really is. This is one of the albums that got me into Jazz Fusion and one of the best. (It's quite high isn't it?) And here's the deal. Every song is perfect. Why isn't it number 1? It sometimes tires me. I have to be in the mood. That goes for many other bands like Opeth,Spock's Beard,The Mars Volta or Pat Metheny. (Hmmm… some Opeth would be fun to listen to after i'm done writing this…) The album is also TOO FUCKING SHORT. It leaves you hungry. Only 6 songs? Come on! Also, the song Race With Devil on Spanish Highway never fails to get me excited. Awesome song.

2 classics and 1 surprise.

Number 13 says it all.

15)Opeth-Blackwater Park (2001)

Sometimes an album needs to grow on you. This one took me a month. Listening to this every day, memorizing every damn thing. It was worth it. The Leaper Affinity is awesome,Bleak is perfect,Harvest is good,The Drapery Falls is perfect and so on… Every song kicks ass. But The Drapery Falls was the first song that i really liked. I love the clean vocals on the album. Especially on this track. Making Akerfeldt one of my favorite clean vocalists ever. Top 5 guaranteed. Anyways, the instrumental is also beyond amazing. The album is good at blowing me away and being timeless. I never get tired of it. Love it.

Favorite Opeth Song:The Drapery Falls

14)The Mars Volta-Amputechture (2006)

I love this album to death. It's heavy prog with a huge emphasis on heavy. The album has some of those moments where it makes my mind explode. Especially songs like Tetragrammaton and Day Of The Baphomets. I also love the opener,Vicarious Atonement. Amazing intro that fades into Tetragrammaton perfectly. Other songs like Meccamputechture and Viscera Eyes are also marvelous. But my favorite is Day Of The Baphomets. Like The Drappery Falls for Opeth, this was the album that got me into The Mars Volta. Also, love the cover.

Favorite Song:Day Of The Baphomets

Blackwater Park is awesome but I'm not too crazy about Amputechture. Only listened once and there were some great moments and some moments where I couldn't wait for the thing to end.

I've haven't heard many good things about the Focus album at all so I never bothered to listen to it. I guess I should give it a try.

12)Nucleus-We'll Talk About It Later (1970)

-This is the most predictable top 50 so far.

Mladen

This damn album. I had never heard of this band until i stumbled upon this album in some obscure forum. I was highly recommended to listen to this album by some guy named "Infinity". The fact that i still remember his username is enough to show how good and memorable this album is. This album would make my top 5 fusion albums. And that's INCLUDING Miles Davis,Mahavishnu and even Return To Forever. The title track is a masterpiece and i highly recommend you to look it up right now. Oh and btw if you want to buy this on vinyl, good luck. They are very rare and expensive.  If you have it on vinyl, good for you. Just don't sell it. Share it with your children and go: "Son,this is music" What if you have a daughter? Same thing. But maybe with a different approach. Ah screw it. This album is a masterpiece in music. Just go out there and enjoy it.

Favorite Song:The album as a whole. No seriously,It's impossible to pick.

11)Yes-Fragile (1971) TIED An Evening With John Petrucci & Jordan Rudess (2000)

and

Yup. You're not going crazy. I have AEWJP&JR higher than SDOIT. Such an underrated piece. Amazingly fun, magical jazz fusion album. If only they made more stuff like this..Every song is a gem though i actually prefer the studio version of State Of Grace to the version on here. Favorite songs? Uhhh… Truth would be the answer to that question. I made a thread about the intro to that song and how similar it sounds to The Spirit Carries On. Man,that was a horrid thread :rollin Anyways,i love the groove here. Hang 11 is probably my second favorite. This album is just amazing.

Favorite Song:Truth

And we also have Yes' Fragile. I remember the day when i first heard Yes. Roundabout was the first song i ever heard from them. Keep in mind, that song might be my first prog rock song ever. Blew me away. But Heart Of The Sunrise is my favorite Yes song. I also LOVE Mood For A Day. Excellent short track. Anyways, not much to say. It kicks ass

Favorite Yes Song:Heart Of The Sunrise

Have you ever heard of Berits Halsband? They're another obscure jazz fusion band that only released a few hundred LPs in the 70s in Sweden. You can find the entire album on Youtube. Nucleus kind of reminds me of them, especially with their use of horns.

The John Petrucci/Jordan Rudess album is very good. Coincidentally I got it for Christmas and just listened to it yesterday. And of course Fragile is a masterpiece.

10)Rush-Farewell To Kings (1977)

Yeah yeah yeah… You saw this coming. This WAS predictable. But seriously, this is an amazing album. Xanadu is my favorite Rush song. I saw it live and was prob one of my best experiences live. I went apeshit. Seriously. Other songs like Cygnus X-1 are also badass. Love em to death. Also,Closer To The Heart is one of the most underrated songs EVER. The title track is also amazing. Well,i cant find much to say. Because you know what this is. Ah well. Godly album.

Favorite Rush Song:Xanadu

9)The Moody Blues-Days Of Future Passed (1967) <3

Woah! I hate The Moody Blues! What the bloody heck is this? An outstanding close to perfect album. But…But… GAH! When i first got the vinyl from this last xmas i was pissed. My friend kept saying that the album is good, but i was being a biased douche. Then i listened to it. You know you're loving it when you're humming to the songs in your FIRST LISTEN. The Morning:Another Morning has one of my favorite choruses EVER.  And the melody is perfect. The orchestral sound that the album has is amazing. I consider this to be the FIRST prog rock album EVER. Not that overrated Beatles stuff. (OOOH!) I love this album. From start to end. Not a single drop. Fine. Lunch Break:Peak Hour kinda gets boring after the beach riff. (i call it the beach riff.) I love this album.

Favorite Song:The Morning:Another Morning

PS:I still hate any other album by TMB.

Moody's are pretty cool.  I like a lot of there stuff, but don't have any deep knowledge of them.

Rush on the other hand... I saw Xanadu when they brought it back in 92 on the Roll The Bones Tour.  Man, I was higher than a kite.  Me and my buddy at the time, Dave, spent all afternoon lighting reefer after reefer, listening to all the live Rush CD's I had, and saved the biggest fuckin stogie of them all specifically for Xanadu, and that mind-blowing laser show... which was top notch at the time.

Good times.

Xanadu is probably my favorite song ever.  Ever.

A Farewell to Kings is my least favourite "classic" Rush album, but it is still very good. However, Cygnus X-1 is a top 3 Rush song for me, the part III really is a musical black hole. And those eerie guitar chords in the end... brilliant.

8)Porcupine Tree-Fear Of A Blank Planet (2007) TIED The Mars Volta-De-loused In The Comatarium (2003)

and

I know, you guys don't like ties but seriously, these albums are so damn close it's not even funny.

And yes,FOABP is the best by PT imo. Some people hated it but man i was blown away. The title track is a heavy badass song,My Ashes is an awesome ballad,Anesthetize is the best that PT has to offer,Sentimental has that part that reminds me of Trains, Way Out Of Here is catchy as fuck and Sleep Together has some great keyboard work and is a nice way to finish the album. I'm perfectly happy with the length of the album, some people are not. But tbh this is an amazing package for any prog fan. The album is consistent and It has Anesthetize!

Favorite Song:Anesthetize

Ohhhh The Mars Volta. De-loused is an amazing album. It has some story that i don't understand (Always fun trying to understand. Anyone wanna explain the story?) which is always fun to me. The album starts out like the good feel you get when taking a piss. Kinda weird i know, but that's as close as it gets. Inertiatic ESP kicks ass. The next song,Roulette Dares kicks ass and that end to the song is awesome. Drunkship Of Lanterns is always a fun song. Eritarka has an intro that for some reason always gets me pumped. BUT Cicatriz ESP is the best song that TMV has to offer. The middle has that jazzy section that is probably my fav moment in the whole album. (EDDIE VEDER!!!!!!) This Appatarus Must Be Unearthed is a single like song why? It's catchy as fuck. Televators IS a single and the song that got me into the band. It's actually the weakest song on the album in my opinion. FLAME SHIELD. The album closer Take The Veil Cerpin Text is the song that i can make the most amount of sense out of its lyrics and is my second fav on the album. It's how a closer should be. It rocks. Still,Cicatriz ESP is the first TMV song that blew me away. Televators got me into them, but i wasn't blown away. Still, this song is near perfection.

7)Dream Theater-Images And Words (1992)

Seriously? You really need a write up for this? I mean seriously,If you're actually reading this, you are kinda wasting your time.

Favorite Song:Learning To Live

6)Return To Forever-Romantic Warrior (1976)

I can listen to this for hours. There are people that consider this wankery and all i can say is… Yes it is. It is wankery. Good wankery. I love it. Stanley Clarke's bass is roaring like always. And Corea's keyboards are always amazing. Every damn member is kicking ass and they actually have their signature songs in here. Sorceress is probably one of the greatest jazz fusion songs ever made. It's that good. And guess what? This IS my favorite jazz fusion album. It really is. Oh and also thanks to that guy on ebay that accidentally gave me a copy of this in vinyl with my copy of Yes' Fragile. Well it was probably an accident for the best. Thanks a lot man!

Favorite Song:Sorceress

Absolute classic. I bet you didn't except this to show up right? I mean, after ALL this jazz/prog,it's kinda weird that i have a Neil Young album on the top 5. Well,i just enjoy this. Might be my most listened album OF ALL TIME. I'm not kidding. Waking up to "Tell Me Why" or listening to Southern Man while having breakfast and taking a dump to Only Love Can Break Your Heart. Man,this is like my life's soundtrack. Need I say more? Well, Don't Let It Bring You Down is also an excellent song. Tbh it's impossible to choose my favorite. But Southern Man is one of my most listened songs ever. So yeah.

Favorite song:Southern Man

3)King Crimson-Red (1974)

An absolute masterpiece. From the title track to Starless, this album is fantastic. To be honest with you,I'm not huge fans of songs like "Moonchild" or "The Devil's Triangle". Those kind of songs kinda bore me. Providence is awesome. I love it. Red is one of my favorite instrumentals ever. Holy crap is that song catchy. Fallen Angel is beautiful. I love the flute (or whatever it is) in this song. I also love the ending to it,so energeh, powah! (It had to be used somewhere on my top 50 writeups.) One More Red Nightmare is my second favorite King Crimson song. I remember it being voted off way early in the survivor here. Kinda sad. It has one of my favorite riffs ever. The solo section is also great with the saxaphone. Damn, this kicks ass. Starless is perfect. Best King Crimson song ever. Seriously, first time I heard it,I noticed that King Crimson was BETTER than the bands I used to listen to back then. (Bon Jovi,Led Zeppelin,Aerosmith and other mainstream junk. Come at me bro.) Starless has an amazing intro and when Wetton comes in,the song gets even better. Damn,I can talk hours about this song and why it's good, but we got a surprise! So,here's the deal. Leave if you don't like surprises. DONT look at the later posts before reading number 2.

Favorite Song:Starless

2)Genesis-Nursery Cryme (1971)

Love is an emotion of a strong affection and personal attachment.Love is also said to be a virtue representing all of human kindness, compassion, and affection —"the unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another". Love may describe compassionate and affectionate actions towards other humans, one's self or animals.
In English, love refers to a variety of different feelings, states, and attitudes, ranging from pleasure ("I loved that meal") to interpersonal attraction ("I love my partner"). "Love" may refer specifically to the passionate desire and intimacy of romantic love, to the sexual love of eros, to the emotional closeness of familial love, to the platonic love that defines friendship, or to the profound oneness or devotion of religious love, or to a concept of love that encompasses all of those feelings. This diversity of uses and meanings, combined with the complexity of the feelings involved, makes love unusually difficult to consistently define, compared to other emotional states.
Love in its various forms acts as a major facilitator of interpersonal relationships and, owing to its central psychological importance, is one of the most common themes in the creative arts.
Love may be understood as part of the survival instinct, a function to keep human beings together against menaces and to facilitate the continuation of the species.

Thanks Wikipedia. Oh and the album is good. But yes. This is where the surprise comes in.

"This is the most predictable top 50 so far."

                                             -Mladen

EAT IT BRO. This is NOT my favorite album. Even though i enjoy the album more than a fat kid in a chocolate factory,it isn't the best album of all time to me. Love doesnt mean that it's good. You can love girls that aren't good looking. You can like food that looks like poop. There. Guess my number 1. You just got Lolzeez'd! Suckaz! Ok… That was terrible. Just like this writeup. I guess you can just start typing away! GO GO GO! Predict my number 1!

How the hell can you not spell 'nursery' right, when it's written on the cover of your second favourite album?

1)GENESIS-SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND (1973)

YES. SELLING ENGLAND IS THE BEST ALBUM EVER. Even my turtles like it. Perfect opener song, perfect single song (I know what i like) amazing epic songs (Battle of the Epping Forest,Firth Of Fifth,The Cinema Show) and even fantastic ballads (More Fool Me). More Fool Me always touches me everytime. Phil's vocals fit PERFECTLY. SUCH an underrated song. Battle Of The Epping Forest is an amazing epic, same with The Cinema Show. Firth Of Fifth has the best solo section ever right behind The Musical Box of course. But this album has something that NC lacks. Consistency. Every track is perfect. The album as a whole is amazing but the tracks themselves are also amazing. See? You can just play The Cinema Show at any random moment and it will make your day. This album isnt just art. It's perfection of the term "music". It kicks ass. It is the shit. It rules. It is perfect.

Favorite Song:Firth Of Fifth

Perfection is, broadly, a state of completeness and flawlessness.
The term "perfection" is actually used to designate a range of diverse, if often kindred, concepts. These concepts have historically been addressed in a number of discrete disciplines, notably mathematics, physics, chemistry, ethics, aesthetics, ontology, and theology.

Oh and the album is perfect.

-This is the most predictable top 50 so far.

Mladen

Good game.

Ok. Listen up. Here's the thing that i said that i would review. I can sometimes lie because of my shyness. I am NOT 18. I'm just a 15 year old kid that likes video games and music. I'm sorry that I've been a huge liar.

Give me one more chance
Let me please explain
It's all been circumstance
I'll tell you once again

You took me for a ride
Promising a vast adventure
Next thing that I know
I'm frightened for my life

Now wait a minute man
That's not how it is
You must be confused
That isn't who I am

Now,I'd like to thank you for dealing with my horrid taste in music and predictable top 50. I guess you can take a look at my top 20 Genesis list if you can't get enough of my lame write ups. Cya!

Please forgive me.  :'(

Edit after like 8 months:So many grammar issues because at the time I wrote all of this at 3:00 AM. Didn't matter which album it was. I wrote every write-up at 3:00 AM. That's why they suck.

NO! I PRESSED "QUOTE" INSTEAD OF "EDIT" SORRY SORRY SORRY.  :mehlin
