In this thread you teach me everything I need to know about neo-progressive band IQ. I'm halfway through The Wake on Spotify, and I listened to all of Tales from the Lush Attic last night. Not being a big fan of Marillion, I wasn't prepared to enjoy another English prog band from the same era. But something about the sound of this band is REALLY hooking me.

Go IQ! I don't love all of their work but they have a couple of albums that are very very good. I think I'll start revisiting their discography right now, it's been a while

I bought Frequency because it was featured in PROG Magazine years back and I liked the song. And I really enjoyed the album. I bought a used copy of Nomzamo afterward, and for cheesy 80s prog, it's a pretty fun record. That's about as far as my experience with IQ goes. The local record store has the reissue of The Wake, but it's the super deluxe $55 edition and there's no way I'm buying that. XD

It was actually the first thread I ever created here, it got 5 post and died a slow death.
As to IQ......*ahem*
The two early albums, Tales and The Wake, are thickly proggy and have a "green" atmosphere about them, the band is still trying to find there sound between the '80s pop and the neoprog elements. After The Wake, singer Peter Nichols leaves to do the solo project Naidem's Ghost, and Paul Menel takes over. They come out with Are You Sitting Comfortably and Nomzamo. Both albums have good moments, but the pop sound seems to dominate too much for my taste. Nichols then returns, and they bust out with Ever, a brilliant album(3rd on my top 50) where they have commitied to the neoprog sound and have tightened completely as a band. Also, this is where Nichols voice comes into it's perfect maturity. Next is Subterrenea, a kick ass double concept album about a social experiment gone horribly awry, and a man who has been kept in isolation is let loose on society, only to seek out his keeper(soon to be a major motion picture). Next comes The Seventh House, a wonderful album, a bit lighter and more on the playful side. From there they move into Dark Matter, a heavy and seriously intense album. Their last effort was Frequency, which has been slowly growing into one of my favorites behind Ever and Subterrenea. The major forces are founders Mike Holmes on guitar and Martin Orford on keys(left after Dark Matter). Drummer Paul Cook is a fucking beast, one of my favorites, and Peter Nichols has the most emotionally expressive voice I know of.
And to uber geek myself out, also check out The Lens, it was the bands name before IQ, and Holmes and Orford went back and rerecorded a lot of the material, all instrumental. It's on Spotify as well.
Along with DT an Yes, IQ is my favorite band.

I have 2 album and because of lonestar I feel the pressure to pick up all their albums and that's a good thing.

Lots of great stuff. I prefer Subterrania and Dark Matter a little more than Ever, but I've had those two albums the longest. Subterrania is a 2 disc album that just flys by, it feels like a one disc album. I rediscovered my love for them recently after kind of forgetting about them because I'm always buying new music.

I love IQ. Love em to bits. My first album with them was Dark Matter, and I was floored by the 24 minute track Harvest of Souls, because, structurally, it might as well be called "We Really Like Supper's Ready A Lot", but yet it's still a magnificent epic and is one of my favorite plus 20 minute long songs ever. Frequency is great too-I got the special edition with a concert DVD, which kicks several shades of ass. They may have been one of the godfathers of neo-prog, but I think they shed that label ages ago, and are just a brilliant prog band period.

I like a handful of songs by this band (mostly from Subterranea), but I generally do not get the love some have for this band. I remember prog fans everywhere going bananas over Dark Matter when it came out, so I blindly bought the CD figuring it had to be good, and was majorly disappointed with it.

I love Subterranea and The Seventh House. Harvest of Souls and The Seventh House are the best things they've done. Alongside Closer and Awake and Nervous.

You'd want the original, cassette-quality mp3s of the first album instead of a CD-quality version of the re-recorded first album? :lol

Just received the 30th anniversary remix of Tales from the Lush Attic in the mail. Full album remix, three bonus tracks, full concert DVD, and a shit-ton of bonus mp3 tracks, including the original Seven Stories into Eight cassete and two just titled "unfinished song". The remix sounds absolutely pristine, fucking amazing.
Yeah, my productivity for the day just went down the shitter.

I'm beginning to look into this band, as I'm starting to get into bands like Arena and Pendragon, and I'd put IQ in with them, along with Marillion. I don't know what the latest is on it, but it's interesting that their big rock opera Subterranea could be made into a film.

Yup, there's a really solid one of him doing The Enemy Smacks. I'm at work and YT is blocked, but just search Enemy Smacks live '93. Song is about heroine abuse, and he slowly transforms throughout the song. It's fucking scary and epic.

Has anyone pre-ordered this commemorative-launch-box thing? I went with 2CD-digipack edition, but I'm still curious about this box. Too early to speak about it, but if anyone has ordered it, I'd be glad to see some photos when it arrives in May.

I thought about it just to have early access to the album. I got a bud in England who would have happily taken the ticket, but in the end decided to just go with the 2CD version. That's a must since the second disc is of all new material as well.

I didn't really expected Russia to make the tour-cut, so I'm not disappointed at all. In fact, never expected them to do it. Yet it's still sad.

They did say on FB that they had plans in the works to play further out, we'll see who that includes. They haven't played California since 1993. :(

Never got into IQ.
As a fan of Marillion, they were suggested to me in the early '90s as being very similar and that if I liked Misplaced Childhood the album EVER would change my life.
It didn't. (Not even close) So I sold it back.
Never bothered with them again until I heard some good things about Dark Matter. I picked that one up and while it more enjoyable than Ever, i didn't find me listening to it very much and I finally sold that one back a few years ago.
Unfortunately, I may have to conclude that they don't do much for me.

What did it for me was Subterranea. The guitar tone in that album is amazing.

Subterrenea is a stunner, period. Such a brilliant concept album, can't wait for the movie.

Hard to argue, but Seventh House has been my master for the last year or so. For me it is their most complete work, with all aspects of the band firing on all cylinders.
Very excited for the Subterrenea movie though...

Yeah, I was preparing to do that weeks ago from IQ's site as well, and it came up as about $33, which I am not paying for a single album again. I just did that for Gazpacho from their site, and it showed up for 1/3 the price at the local record store. I weep. :lol

I've had a few days to let it soak in. A tremendous effort by the band all around, and a few moments of brilliance. Until the End might end up challenging Seventh House as my favorite IQ track, and Without Walls is a neo-prog monster. Now on to the bonus tracks....

Haven't even finished listening to it but I'm already loving it. Amazing effort by the band

If I just take the 5 proper tracks, this is going to be a very strong contender for album of the year. Right now Without Walls is probably my favorite, and much like Spock's Beard's From the Darkness, the different sections of the song are different, but work well together.
The bonus tracks range from good to very damn good, but I don't know if I'd replace anything from the first disc with any of the bonus tracks.
Between Flaming Row, this, Epica, and Agollach, this might be one of the strongest two month period of releases in a long time.

I'm in love with the title track and Until the End so far. Without Walls is great too, but I'm not too keen on the first part. When it speeds up, though, it becomes amazing.

I know it's too soon but I think this might be my favorite IQ album. I feel like they grabbed the best from their previous albums and combined it perfectly, there's not a single song that I consider weak or that bores me, which happens with every other of their records.

I'm not sure that is why I'm asking. I've gotten other physical IQ albums from sources other than their site. I want the
physical copy. So far from what I've heard (and I know this is bold and maybe too early) this could be on par with
some of my all time favorite albums. It just sounds AMAZING!

I asked the local record store if they're getting it, and they said the company that ships the import stuff isn't carrying it, though apparently "a lot" of customers have been asking.

It's called the "new car smell effect". People tend to overrate and overhype new things. I'm not saying that the album isn't great, I'm just not putting stock into people who instantly rate something 5 stars.
I'll have to post my ratings later, but I will agree with lonestar's first and last place.

Finally got around to listening to the new album and it did not disappoint. Quite excellent, and hopefully it will only get better with more listens.

The albums at the bottom aren't bad, just not where I would suggest starting. Looking at my ranking, I obviously tend to favor the newer stuff, but each of the pre-reunion albums has at least one killer track.

No, not a "large margin of fans." I meant they were ranked #1 in the genre by a large margin. Their #1 ranking is 4.78. The next album in the #2 spot has a ranking of 4.23, then #3 is 4.22, and #4 is 4.21. The IQ album is a good half point ahead of the rest of the pack.

By all accounts the new album is going to be pretty stellar, but I'd wait until more than just die-hard IQ fans have gotten to reviewing and rating the album before I'd put too much stock in those numbers.

Because of the new car smell. The 2nd and 3rd place albums in that list there have over 1,300 ratings. If that IQ album remains that high by the time it gets even 1/3 of that many ratings, then maybe it will mean something. Or not, considering that is prog archives and their rating system is pretty flawed.

Album is great. Without Walls is my favorite, love the middle section.
Also, thr bonus tracks aren't bad at all. They're so different in vibe from the album songs, I can see why they didn't make the album. Ten Million Demons is an interesting song.

Just wanted to say I would be fine with Fall and Rise replacing Ocean on the album. I'm in love with this song now.

Title track kicks ass. Might be the best track from the album.
As for the lyrics, I wondered this myself, and here's the quote of John Stott in response to RJ review on Lady Obscure Music Magazine:
In an interview with Prog magazine, Peter Nicholls explained the lyrics as a cinematic David Lynch-esque tale of a serial killer’s murder spree in a quiet Mid-Western town which grips the area in fear. The song is from the murderer’s point of view and explains the thrill of control and anonymity that he now has.
I find it quite plausible.

Finally got around to hearing Road of Bones, the 2 CD version, and good fucking lord is this an amazing album. Give it more time and it might be my favorite IQ album and is right now my AOTY. Really really good stuff here.

from start to end and that includes the bonus disc. Absolutely without a doubt one of the best albums I have ever heard in

discography now but looking for a little feedback from long time IQ fans to see if there are weaker albums I should skip and

I'd say work your way backwards. I really enjoy Dark Matter and The Seventh House. Then grab Subterranea and Ever. Before that are two albums without Peter Nichols on vocals, so if you really want the whole discography, grab those, but I don't spin them as often as the others. And before THOSE are the band's first three albums, the latter two of which have gotten anniversary collections with bonus material in the last few years.

Yep, I would tend to agree with that. The two non-Nichols albums have a much more 80's pop-prog feel to them, and I don't spin them much as well, though I love Common Ground. I would consider the must have list to be The Seventh House, Subterrenea, Ever, and The Wake. I'm not as much of a Dark Matter fan as others, but it's definitely worth owning. Tales from the Lush Attic is a solid album, proggy as fuck if that's your thing, get the 30th anniversary re-release, sounds a bajillion times better.

I bought The Road of Bones today, my first IQ album. First impressions are very good. The climax of Without Walls is massive, reminding me a bit of the chaos near the end of Steven Wilson's Raider II. Also, Until the End is a beautiful way to end the album.

I never thought I would say this, or even think it for that matter but this album might end up being my favorite album of
all time. Wish You Were Here has held the top spot for my whole life. I can only speak to the here and now and let time
sort out how this album ages but as of now I would say it's my favorite album.

I've seen a few live videos of IQ, and what a stage presence Peter Nicholls has! I love it! He really gets into the music, even when he's not singing.
Road of Bones is really growing on me. I'm also hearing other songs of theirs I like. Isn't it great discovering a band who have a big back catalogue. Plenty of new albums to buy over the coming months or years.

Just picked up the debut album today.
Wow...early Marillion gets accused of ripping off Gabriel-era Genesis, but they've got NOTHING on this album. I honestly had to do a double take to make sure I hadn't found a long lost Genesis recording.

I like the new album enough that I went back and bought "Frequency" -which I had skipped- and have been enjoying both quite a bit.
Not sure if they'll ever top "7th House" or "Ever" my two favorites.

I re-spun Tales from the Lush Attic today.
I do really like it, but it takes a bit to digest. Seriously *cannot* distinguish it from Foxtrot-Lamb era Genesis. The resemblance is just uncanny. Even the recording style....and Nicholls makeup on the back of the album? These guys *REALLY* wanted to be Gabriel Genesis....BADLY.
If it had come out 10 years earlier...it would have been too close to mimicry and they never would have made it. But since it happened 8 years after Gabriel's departure, and Genesis wasn't making that music any more, it ended up filling a much needed void. And the obviously grew into "making it their own" later. It will be interesting to see where this band takes me. I will pick up The Wake when I get a chance.

Recorded at a recent gig at The Met Arts Centre in Bury, this 2 hour double CD is presented in a 6 panel digipak format and features live versions of all the material on disc 1 of The Road of Bones, along with a selection of live favourites stretching back some 30 years.
As this is a limited edition ‘Archive Collection’ release it will be sold exclusively through the IQ website and live shows.
The band are hoping to have this release available in time for the upcoming Christmas gigs.

I just picked up Road of Bones. WOW!!!!
I only own Frequency, Road of Bones and Tales From the Lush Attic. Tales didn't grab me instantly, but I've been meaning to re-visit it. I remember that it seemed so eerily like PG-era Genesis that it was almost spooky. It was literally as if PG had never left and this was the follow up to The Lamb.
But Frequency and Road of Bones are just instantly wonderful. And yet, they still maintain a sound that is very much like it could be a Gabriel/Hackett/Banks modern day side project. I guess the first album just sounds a bit more dated, and may take some getting used to.
I've decided that the best way to proceed with this band will probably just be to go backwards from here. So I'll be looking to pick up Dark Matter in the near future.

Kind of random, but I stumbled across the song No Love Lost the other day and fell in love with it immediately. First hearing was a live performance with Nicholls singing. I then heard the original studio version with PL Menel singing and thankfully I still enjoyed it as much. This will be my gateway into the PL Menel albums, meaning I won't have to give Nomzamo and Are You Sitting Comfortably a miss. Which is nice.

Great news, everyone! I've got Subterranea! It's been 3 years (almost to the day, as it happens) since my last IQ album (for various reasons, mainly that other bands have got in the way). Listening to it for the first time now, and I'm loving it so far.

My first dive into IQ. Loved it on first listen, Although it was a burned cd my friend gave me that was one disc. The Narrow Margin wasn't on it. Then he showed me Subterranea live and loved it. Didn't really get into the story but the recent movie really helped a lot. Its also pretty good too. I recommend it.
Capricorn is my favorite song from it.

Loving the occasional saxophone appearances! I happen to be on Capricorn as I write now. I'm loving this album so far! One of the fun parts of albums like this is spotting all the recurring themes, especially when an album begins with a track called Overture. That's the whole point of an overture is to introduce musical themes that will be developed over the course of the piece, and to transport you mentally into the world of the story.

Got a perfect spot just in front of Peter Nicholls from where I thorougly enjoyed the show. Joined hands with Peter during the third song I reached up with mine fingers outstreched and he reached out and linked up.
Met Michael and Peter after the show and got The Road of Bones (brought from home) an The Wake 25th anniversary box signed.
I had been trying to find the box of The Wake for a while but it was never possible to find. Well they had one of them and I got it for 150 SEK. Bought a t-shirt as well but due to delivery problems it will be posted to me.
Also randomly met up with Micheal Holmes and some of the crew after the gig. Walked with them and talked to Mike on my way to the Subway but ended up in a pub with them instead for a beer and some further talking. Mike took a groupie and posted on his FB so if you see a bearded fella with a Shattered Fortress t-shirt there it is probably me.
Totally amazing show and a really magical experience.

You know they are not a touring band.
They all have dayjobs so they do all of their recordings and shows in their spare time.
Well Mike is retired from his dayjob so he has the band and the label Giant Electric Pea but can as opposed to the others focus on the music.
They do a couple of shows each year but don't exoect them to come to you... unless you are in England or Holland. Well worth a trip....

But I think the solo at the end of The Province just joined those ranks. I think I've listened to that song about 10 times today and I'm just over the moon about that solo. I'm honestly getting really really emotional about this solo. HOLY CRAP.

I agree, The Province might be the most underrated IQ song I know and one of my absolute favorites by this band. The keyboard solo (though a little Supper's Ready-ish) builds a lot of suspense wich all unloads at this final guitar solo.

Regarding them playing Quebec... fucking Quebec City and Montreal! (that's envy speaking). They get a lot more shows/acts than Toronto does, despite having less than 1/2 the population combined. Threshold is also playing warmups there before RoSFest - and I'm trying to figure out if I can economically make that trip. Not sure I'd ever get the chance to see them otherwise.

With every album I hear, I just keep wondering why Marillion is relatively huge, and IQ is (by comparison) virtually unknown! These guys are just so top notch amazing!!
I do find myself curious of how different this new remix is from the original, but I’m loving it so much that I’m trying not to think about it too much.

As to your question, I think H-era Marillion was just a bit more commercially accessible, not sure if they would've done so well if Fish had stayed in the front, and I think they marketed themselves better. Marillion was on the forefront of using the web properly for promotion as well as crowdfunding albums. They worked for that shit for sure, all the while writing the blueprint for music promotion for the new era.

As for the first two sounding not as good.... get the remixes espescially Tales from the lush attic is sooo much better in the new mix.
Back in the day they spent one day mixing it, the remix was done by Mike Holmes from the original tapes and he spent a month perfecting it. Sounds awesome....

Both of the Menel albums have their highlights. From Nomzamo we got the title track, Human Nature, and Common Ground (one of my favorite IQ tracks). From AYSC, there's War Heroes, Nostalgia/Falling Apart at the Seams and Wurensh. There's also some very skippable songs of course, but both albums are worth some time.

Love watching someone fall for my favorite band. I just did a full discography run in preparation for Progstock, and was pleased to realize I still know the words to almost every single song, even the Menel albums. Also just stunned at how good a run of albums that Ever-Subterrenea-Seventh House-Dark Matter-Frequency-Road of Bones it. There is nary a bad song in the lot, and only a few mediocre ones, yet each album has some serious masterpieces.
My dream set for this Saturday...

Remember that there’s a lot I haven’t heard, and Frequency is my “first love”....that was the album that hooked me.
Someone IRL from the MP forum was who made the recommendation at the Transatlantic concert in this area back in 2014 (the night the Seahawks won the Super Bowl)....but I feel bad that I can’t remember who it was. I know his face...I even saw him again at a QR show about 2 years ago. (And if you’re reading this please chime in because you changed my freakin life with that recommendation!!).
But even after everything that I’ve fallen in love with, my #1 favorite is still The Province. That breakdown in the 2nd half just kills me every time. And the crescendo “your final positive reward” into the moog chord, and then that amazing guitar solo that rivals Comfortably Numb for one of the greatest solos I’ve ever heard in my life.
After that, the title track from Road of Bones is right up there. The Darkest Hour, Fading Senses, and Further Away are all climbing the charts really quick. Last Human Gateway is quite a beast too. The drum sound from The Wake is so dated that it’s almost distracting, but in spite of that, Widow’s Peak manages to floor me every time, and Headlong is an amazing closer.
Can’t wait to delve deeper into this band. I’m absolutely STUNNED. Mostly just feeling like an idiot for not checking them out sooner.

Don't.... just be glad that you found them now....
They have never got big enough to be on the radar which I believe to be part bad luck and part less exposure.
They have not been touring as much as they should to get there. Since a long time ago they all have day jobs (Mike Holmes says he is retired but he works with the label Giant Electric Pea) and just do a concert here and there.
Will you be seeing them live this autumn?

Based on how you talk about Province, you'd probably dig my favorite track of theirs, the title track from Seventh House. Both songs have similar structures and that same epic last six minutes or so.

I wonder if we'll have a new album in time for the Night of the Prog appearance next year. It will be five years since The Road of Bones, and the last few albums have come at five-year intervals: Dark Matter (2004) > Frequency (2009) > The Road of Bones (2014) > ??? (2019?)

lonestar and others convinced me to check out IQ at ProgStock tonight. Never listened to them before this week, but I definitely found some of their music that I really enjoy. The song Road of Bones is really awesome. I think that maybe the favorite I've heard of them. Been listening to Ever, it's kind of hit or miss. Like, I guess I'm more of a metal than prog fan so it's a bit more soft jammy than metal jammy that I typically like, but it's pretty enjoyable overall. Some of the long instrumental sections have beautiful atmosphere. I love the production of this though, sounds so clear and crisp (and that's via youtube, I'm sure the CD is great)

I would certainly say that recent releases are more metal-ish, while older stuff falls somewhere around Styx on the “heavy scale”. Please check out the epic Without Walls from the RoB album. That will probably convince you to at least get that album.

I didn't get any more full songs, but I guarantee you'll enjoy the rest of the footage I've been reviewing this morning. Got about 30 minutes of their set and other than a couple moments, the sound came out really well (well it sounded great in person so I expected that). Also have 10 minutes of Tom Brislin and 20 minutes of Enchant. This is an epic hour long video in the making right now. Probably have it up later today, it's almost finished but will take a couple hours to encode and then upload to youtube since it's a long one.
What sucks is they cut 2 songs from the setlist. In my prep for the show this week, I made a playlist on youtube of their set, but there was one song I could not find, "Mome" so was thinking maybe it's new or if not, I would capture that one so next time somoene youtubes for it, they'll get a hit. But they didn't play it :(

What a great setlist! The only one I’m not familiar with is Failsafe. And it looks like they played everything from Ever except Came Down.
It’s funny to me that I only own 5/8ths of the Nichols output, and yet their modern day set lists pretty much focus on those 5 albums.
Looking forward to hearing Subterrenea. Has anyone seen the movie? Is it any good?
EDIT - Also....the Subterrenea OST is available through their website. Is that worth getting?

I told them I was mad they didn’t do awake and nervous becuase that’s the song that got me into iq. Their keyboardist said the same thing and the bassist said there a song that sounds better live, so I said that means they have to come back here. They said “we will release the new album first, then let’s focus on that.” so you never know...

I don't know about US music stores, but I got a great price going directly through their website...and received it in the mail a week and a half early. When you use a CC, you get an automatic exchange rate with no mark up.
After my negative experience of not being able to find their stuff anywhere, and the very positive experience I had using their website (btw....it looks like Holmes himself runs it. The PayPal payment I made for my last haul went directly to Michael Holmes. So the band gets all the profit for purchase is what I'm assuming that means) I would never go anywhere else to get their stuff.

I'll give it a shot. I've had so-so experiences ordering directly from bands' sites, but after how much Road of Bones was in the store ($36 regular, $48 2-disc. What the hell was up with that release?) I'm willing to try it.

Shipping is a bit step coming from that part of the world...but it still came out cheaper than that. My final cost *including shipping* for the 2 CD/1DVD set from the UK to the west coast of the US was 33.95 USD.
In the end, I do not feel the least bit ripped off. It was 18L for the disc and 7.25L for shipping and handling.

That is because it is considered a companion to the Wake anniversary box, and fits inside there together with the original CDs.

At first, I was also bummed that the DVD was not region 0 and therefore wouldn’t play on any DVD players in my house. But then I popped it into my computer down in my man cave (which uses a big screen TV for a monitor) and it plays fine there...so totally awesome!!!

Just watched Scrape Across the Sky today. WHAT A SHOW!!! I can't even begin to describe how over the moon I am about this band right now. They have seriously shot up to a tie with Haken for my #3 all time favorite band.
The concert video was my first time ever hearing The Seventh House, and within 3 minutes of the song starting, I was already thinking "Is there anything this band does that isn't amazing???"
I've listened to Subterrenea once, but it was a lot to digest all at once. I loved what I heard...it's just a huge bite to chew all at once.

And again, it's one of those bands that it's very difficult to put ANY album at the bottom, because they are all so amazing.

I've been so into this band for the last couple of weeks, owned Road Of Bones for a while and I absolutely adore it, last year couldn't stop listening to Subterrenea either but I never really delved into them too much beyond that.
Really need to start collecting more of their stuff beyond listening to them on YouTube. I did have Scrape Across the Sky on in the background and it was incredible.

I can’t remember the last time I was so completely obsessed with a new discovery like I am now.
I have this week off work, and it seems like I use all my spare time to try and catch up on what I’ve missed. I’m recovering from a kidney stone procedure I had yesterday, so when I got home I just sat in bed and watched the Live in Holland show from 2007. That was cool to hear earlier versions of a couple of the Frequency songs when it wasn’t quite out yet. I also watched Subterrenea The Concert and got a chance to digest that a bit more.
I really need to get The Seventh House ASAP. From the couple of tracks I’ve heard, that seems to be amazing as well.

If you're into heavier stuff....RoB is definitely their heaviest album. Most of the rest of their stuff is like the lighter side of DT....in a VERY good way.
What really amazes me (and I may have said this before...I feel very strongly about it) is that I can't believe how much some of the ambience and mood of all their music makes me feel like this is where Genesis would have gone if Gabriel, Hackett, and Banks had become the primary force of the band moving forward.

If I recall correctly, Tony Banks actually WAS the primary force of the band moving forward.
I always thought of The Last Human Gateway as the greatest Genesis song that was not written by Genesis though. Nicholls sounds like Gabriel with a cold.

Banks may have been a primary force in the band continuing. But I still have a tendency to point at Collins for steering them in the direction of “hit makers”. There is still the dispute over whether or not Collins submitted In the Air Tonight to the rest of the band. Collins insists that he did and that Banks turned it down. Banks insists that he never would’ve turned down that song. Who’s to say what really happened?
Totally agree on The Last Human Gateway. Although, Gabriel sounds like he’s got a cold half the time on some of the early records so I honestly can’t tell the difference between he and Nicholls at all. Maybe a little bit more nowadays. You can really tell that Nicholls took some voice lessons at some point. His early work is a tad shaky, and definitely sounds like it’s coming from his throat. His modern era stuff sounds much more professional and his lower register is just pure butter, and definitely sung properly.

I bought Road of Bones earlier this year thanks to this thread and a few samples from Prog Magazine. I'm happy to report this band finally clicked with me. My only previous experience with IQ was over 20 years ago when I purchased Subterranea when that came out. I remember being somewhat disappointed in that record at the time, and so I put off IQ as a band that wasn't for me. Road of Bones has really clicked with me, so much so that I went out and bought The Seventh House about a week ago, and I"m really digging that one too. Peter Nicholls is definitely an acquired taste as a vocalist, but I'm starting to come around. Thinking about getting Ever, Dark Matter and Frequency next, and then giving Subterranea another chance.

This makes me happy. I can personally attest that Frequency is absolutely amazing. Seventh House and Dark Matter are the only albums I don't own yet. I'm anxious to get my hands on them soon.
If you do get Ever...go to the bands website and pick up the new 30th Anniversary package. Not really expensive and totally worth it. Probably still my favorite album so far.

Road Of Bones was my album of the year and is now in my top 10 of all time. Their last 2 albums are simply
stellar. They hit a sweet spot for me.

Ever is absolutely amazing! I think the brand new 30th anniversary edition is an incredible deal for the price they are asking, but any incarnation of that album is going to be incredible.

As of now, Dark Matter is the only Nichols album I don't own. Are the 2 PL albums worth getting? I heard a brief excerpt of AYSC (because I had heard it was produced by Broon) and I wasn't feeling it. But I do tend to be a completist.
The two Menel albums have some high points, Common Ground and a few others are quite brilliant, but they do take a pop spin altogether that makes a good deal of the material quite skippable.
The Seventh House is my all time favorite song. The last six minutes are as close to musical perfection that there is, and I just love the concept surrounding the album (though it's a bit obscure as most of Nichols subjects are, he loves to make us dig deep).

I flew to Birmingham to see Steely Dan (that concert was absolutely amazing). I walked through the huge lobby of that arena there to get some beer, and who do I run into??

I flew to Birmingham to see Steely Dan (that concert was absolutely amazing). I walked through the huge lobby of that arena there to get some beer, and who do I run into??

They released one song and nothing since then, and I've been wondering about it forever!!!

UPDATE: Really good! Love the instrumental section at the end of Leap of Faith. Also wasn't expecting the seamless segue into Came Down.

I had no idea that such a project was ever in the works, but WOW what a lineup! Had I known about it, I would probably have asked him. But I will maybe meet him again at the Loreley, so maybe there I can ask :)

I just picked up Dark Matter last week, and of the four albums I now have (Seventh House, Dark Matter, Frequency, Road of Bones) it just might be my favorite so far. Lots of energy and I really dig Martin Orford's keyboard work on this one. Looking to pick up Ever and Subterranea next, and then Tales from the Lush Attic and The Wake. Not sure about digging in to the Paul Menel albums.

I just realised that IQ are going to play at Uwe Treitinger's Art Rock Festival on 13th of April in Reichenbach, which is only a 1,5 hour drive from my/my parent's hometown - WHERE I WILL BE that weekend!
Huge coincidence, as I'm usually only home during the summer, Christmas and maybe some time during February. I hope my friend (I only have one friend who also likes IQ) can make it! But either way, I think I'll still go, even if I have to go alone. Still, together is always more fun.

I picked up the Ever 2018 Remaster, and I dig it, but there's a certain immaturity in the songwriting that doesn't quite sit right with me. I don't know how I can explain it better, but there are moments that sound like the band is trying to do things that are just beyond their capabilities and the execution isn't quite there. Comparing it against their later albums like Dark Matter and The Road of Bones, I think they improved as musicians and as songwriters. Overall, though, I'm glad I've taken a closer look into their discography and I look forward to getting their remaining albums. Right now, I've got Ever, The Seventh House, Dark Matter, Frequency, and The Road of Bones.

Agree 100% on the Foxtrot comparison. Harvest Of Souls is a masterpiece, but its structure is 96% ripped off from Supper's Ready: 1. acoustic guitars and sung main theme 2. same tempo but with band 3. faster part 4. shuffled part 5. keyboard solo over an ostinato (even in the same tempo) 6. big finale, same tempo and themes as in the beginning, triumphing guitar. Not criticising, just observing :) Love this song despite of the similarities.
By the way, I saw IQ last night in Reichenbach. Great show, great sound! Not my favourite setlist though. I am not so much into their 90s stuff, I like the very early and the late stuff best. And they played a lot of 90s songs. I was hoping for The Last Human Gateway or The Province, but oh well :) It was great nevertheless. I also asked Mike Holmes about a possible Frequency vinyl release and he says it's going to happen this year!!!

Agreed, The Province is probably my fav IQ song too. It's a pity it often gets overlooked among their other epics. I think that keyboard solo is amazing.

The Province is a fantastic track! I love its gradual comedown after the epic guitar solo. Another song I've discovered recently that does that is The Darkest Hour.
At the moment, my favourite IQ song is probably Frequency.

On the first couple of listens, Harvest of Souls didn't hit me as hard as I hoped it would. Although I will say that it's not as much of a Supper's Ready ripoff as I was led to believe. When I think of "Supper's Ready ripoff" I usually think of Grendel by Marillion...and this isn't even close to being that blatant. I hear the "feel" of SR more in climax of songs like The Seventh House and The Province than I do in Harvest of Souls. Sacred Sound is amazing. In fact, the first half hit me harder than the epic. But maybe it just needs a few more spins. It's still new, and I don't even think it's gotten to my "5 spin" rule yet. (I just picked up an album by District 97 and I'm trying to digest that at the same time)

I adore the sound of The Road of Bones and am afraid if I go back to their first album I'll get something radically different. I kind of want to play it safe and get one that sounds like TROB because I like it so much (Without Walls is something really special). The piano, electronic beats, smooth singing, I'm craving that sound - what would you suggest next? Open question to everyone too.

I can assure you that Frequency is every bit the equal of Road of Bones. Going back to the first album was a bit of a shock to the system, but it definitely sounds like a long lost Peter Gabriel-era Genesis album. So if you really enjoy stuff like foxtrot or nursery crime or selling England by the pound, you will probably still like it.

Something just made me giggle. I'm listening to Ever, and in the credits next to each musician, it has in brackets the specific brands of instruments they play. For the singer Peter Nicholls, it just says (Throat, larynx, lungs etc.). :lol

Something that concerns me...it just occurred to me to check, and it turns out September 7th is a Saturday. Albums are released on Fridays. I wonder if it's a typo, because the only "x7th September" that falls on a Friday is the 27th.

They posted on Facebook that the final mixing (or maybe it's not mixing, don't quote me on that) is apparently taking a little longer than they thought and they're aiming to release it at the end of September now, so the 27th sounds likely.

Giving The Seventh House a second spin. The ending of the title track reminds me of the climax to The Province, which I know was released later, but I've been familiar with that track for 5 years vs the 3 days I've known The Seventh House.

I've recognized the similarities as well with those two tracks. The last six minutes of both are kind of cooked from the same recipe, which is just fine with me since they represent 12 of the best minutes IQ has to offer. The Seventh House album is just tremendous beginning to end, but the bookends of Wrong Side and Guiding Light, with the title track in the middle, is for me about the best that IQ has produced. They're just firing on all cylinders, and no mistakes are made. It's perfect music for me.

I have to admit that they do have a bit of a "schtick". I absolutely adore their sound, so I have no complaints. But they don't exactly venture outside the lines very much. Maybe they've gradually introduced a bit more of a "metal" angle with Road of Bones...but the formula is the same.
I saw an interview with Peter from the Frequency days, and he addressed the idea that they were often compared to Genesis. I liked his answer. He said that with the first album, he could definitely see it. But from The Wake on, they started doing more of their own thing. I agree with that. They don't strike me as "sounding like Genesis" as much as they sound more like "what Genesis may have become if Peter and Steve had never left" in my imagination. Even on Road of Bones, I hear keyboard parts that sound so much like Banks, that it's eerie. If you add in that Mike Holmes (to my ears) sounds a lot like Hackett, and that Peter does not sound unlike Peter Gabriel...it's easy for me to imagine that this is the Genesis from a parallel universe, and that Tales from the Lush Attic was the follow up to Lamb, and things just evolved from there.

I am very much enjoying The Wrong Side of Weird and The Seventh House. I like the other tracks too, but those are definitely the standouts for me at this early stage.
As might be expected, I'm on a big IQ kick atm, which I'm currently feeding by spinning Subterranea. Goodness me, this band is incredible.
It's kind of dawned on me how I haven't got too many of these to get now. Dark Matter is the only non-80s album I don't yet have. Idk if I'm doing this the wrong way, and whether the 80s albums will sound "amateurish" by comparison. And the Menel albums is another issue all together. I definitely want to get Nomzamo at some point, as I love No Love Lost. But it's not high-priority right now.
Update (9:43pm): It's beginning to occur to me that one of IQ's traits seems to be the song that ends by gradually calming down. See: The Darkest Hour, The Narrow Margin, The Province, Until the End. There's a climax, and then the song gradually winds down, reducing in instrumentation until there is just a piano or a guitar left.

That seems more to be the case...gets me all excited when they do that. I'm sure there'll be leaks aplenty after the show on the 7th, they posted on FB that they'll have copies for sale.
Finally got a quiet listen in with my Grados(the others were on a long drive), I can fully attest that all three epics kick fucking ass. (For Another Lifetime, The Great Spirit Way and Fallout). I think TGSW is leading the way at the moment.

I will finally be completing my collection. I ordered the two PL albums at the same time. So I will have everything when the new one arrives. Probably won't even crack the PL albums for awhile....but I still wanted them on the shelf.

I do want to go on record and say that Stay Down is one of the most exquisitely structured and beautiful tracks IQ has put out. I can't stop replaying that song, and I verge on ugly cry face every time. It's really perfect.

Not gonna lie, I kinda struggle with Further Away. I just listened to see if my mind might be changed on it for now, but to no avail. On Ever, I much prefer Darkest Hour and Fading Senses. And among songs of similar length (Wrong Side of Weird, Seventh House, The Province, etc.) , it's nowhere near the top for me.
And I have to point out...something happens to Peter Nicholls' voice between Ever and Subterranea. It sounds so much more mature and refined on the later albums, and it has continued to grow in strength in the albums since.

Yeah, but it's not even close to the drastic change in his voice between The Wake and Ever. There's so much maturity and growth in how he sounds there.

Saw IQ live yesterday..... awesome show with 5 new songs(had only heard 1 before but loved the new material.
Bought the CD at the merch stand together with a tshirt.
Had such a blast at the front, just by Peter Nicholls who at one time leaned down and grabbed my hand as he sang looking directly at me..... very strong moment
He also handed me his setlist after the show.

Well worth it in my opinion... although I am lucky and they played my hometown both in 2017 and 2019.

We'll see about the release. IQ posted yesterday that there was a major fuck up on the pressing of disc one, so they had to repress them all. Some pre orders will get out, but other than that they're on hold. Hopefully they'll release it to Spotify etc. so that people can at least hear it in its entirety.

So it's disappointing that we won't be getting our discs tomorrow, even though I am very glad they've explained why the delay has happened. So we are left in limbo for the time being.

You'd think the digital versions would be unaffected, but I guess they want to release everything at the same time. So we're stuck in limbo. Today was supposed to be the day. But instead we are disappointed.
Meanwhile The Prog Report aren't exactly heaping glowing praise on the album, contrary to other reviews. And yet, they choose to further prove their Morse/Portnoy fanboyism by heaping blind praise on the new Flying Colors. It really feels like The Prog Report is a Morse promo tool rather than an unbiased source for news across the entire prog spectrum.

Went home for lunch today and checked my mailbox, and there was something from the UK with a Giant Electric Pea sticker on it. Lo and behold there's my copy of Resistance. Happy Birthday to me! Listening right now. There's a lot to digest but I like what I'm hearing so far. First impression, this is the album I had hoped Marillion's F E A R would have been.

Really liked it on first listen - it captured me more than Road of Bones did, that's for sure. For some reason, the release date on Amazon.ca is listed as October 4th - at $26! :sad:). Hoping that iTunes has it then as well. Not sure I want to pay double just for a physical copy.

Fallout sounds like a Marillion song just the way it is structured.
The soloing has been top notch on this one. They seem to be very carefully constructed and most of them have a nice buildup.
The thing about Road of Bones for me was that the title tracks was so fucking amazing that I didn't really give the rest of the album a chance. I must of played that song on repeat like 100 times. The mood, the buildup, the lyrics, even the mix...it's just a perfect song for me.

I think it's better structured than ANY Marillion 10 min plus song ;D (except Ocean Cloud).
Marillion's longer songs always loose focus in my opinion. They never have any leitmotifs etc., they are just composed of independent shorter songs glued together. IQ on the other hand definitely know how to structure a long track.

I found it best to think of it as two separate albums, they both have a very different feel and together are just a massive amount to assimilate in one sitting.

Stay Down is fucking stunning...the atmosphere they create in the transition from the slow period to the heavy one is pure perfection.

Yeah, there is definitely a difference in atmosphere between the two discs. Was also pleasantly surprised by the segues between the Disc 2 tracks.
I very often take a break between discs when I'm listening to a double album. Usually only 5 minutes or so, but still a chance to stretch the legs and what-have-you.

I also ordered the 2 PL albums, so I own the entire IQ catalog now. The only thing I don’t own (and can’t even find) is “Seven Stories into ‘98” which I guess is the re-recorded versions of the original demo tape. And thanks to the bonus material on the new Ever re-release I actually have those original songs from the demo tape.

But I’ve been listening to it today at work, and it’s pretty awesome! For Another Lifetime is....really weird. But I mean that in a good way.
As a side note. I ripped all my new CDs to my library and loaded them on my player, and because it lists the albums alphabetically I decided to start with Are You Sitting Comfortably. Maybe it was just my low expectations, but I enjoyed that album FAR more than I thought I would!

There's nothing wrong with the Menel albums, though the pop edge sneaking into the music makes some of it very skippable. As I've said previously, there are some quite strong songs on those albums....Human Nature, War Heroes, Wurensh, Nomzamo are all excellent songs, and Common Ground will always be a top ten IQ song for me. That one is really something special, and one I was fortunate enough to see live back in '94.
Edit: Just checked Setlist FM for the set of that San Jose show way back when...I'd give my left fucking nut to go back and see that one again with my current IQ passion instead of the fledgling love I had then....

Resistance is still in near daily rotation for me. Neil Durant's keyboard work is the thing impressing me the most at this time. I love his sounds, and his playing is top notch. It seems to me he was given a lot of room to contribute, especially on the epics, and he comes through in shining colors. Paul Cook's drumming is impressing me, as well.

I've said this before, but my main takeaway from this album (Disc 1 in particular) is how HUGE the keyboards sound. Reminds me a bit of Frost* and Jem Godfrey's stadium-sized keyboard effects.

Great review! It's given words to my feeling (and it's not a negative one, or at least I'm willing to turn it into a positive one with perseverance over time) of how the album lacks definitive choruses and repeated sections. The epics in particular feel linear, and thus it takes more listens to get your bearings round them.

Semi-related to IQ but I recently got my dad the Martin Orford album The Old Road on CD because my dad is a big IQ fan and I thought a side-project/ex member type album would be a nice gift and I was even surprised myself how enjoyable the album was. All i know is he was a founding member of IQ and spent ~25 years in the band but I figured there might be some people here who haven't heard the album and I thought I would recommend it. John Wetton sings on a few songs as well!

Very legit review...I like the multiple grading scales on that site, the site I write for is 1-5 stars, with half stars, it gets annoying being so limited. In all honesty, I'd rather do away with rating it and just write about the music, but ratings are a necessary evil.Finally, some time and a laptop.

With every album, they climb my chart as one of the greatest bands of all time.
Every time I think about how much I missed out by not checking them out when I had the chance, it's almost a painful thing.
I don't think I would have liked the first two (though I remember seeing the albums in the record store as a kid. The album cover for The Wake especially stands out in my mind) as I was deeply into thrash at that time and my state of mind was "heavy and fast", "if it's too loud, you're too old" type of thing that many 14-16 yr old boys go through.
But when Ever came out in 1993, I was just coming out of my extreme death and black metal phase and was starting to be drawn to more intricate material whether heavy or not. IAW being a big reason for that. If I had heard Ever as a new release, I'm sure I would have been hooked. It's been almost a bit overwhelming to hear SO MUCH amazing music all at once.
Resistance is definitely growing on me, but as someone pointed out, it's not quite as straightforward as RoB was. Not really "linear" was the term I believe someone used earlier. I would say that's accurate. But it is still breathtaking. I'm just still trying to get used to the songs.

I've actually seen IQ twice, once ages ago when they did their sole west coast performance, and last year when I had to travel 3k miles to New Jersey for it.

My favorite IQ. I haven't been able to get into "Fire and Security" and "Perfect Space", they're OK but just kind of taking up space for me. Everything else I really like. "Stay Down", "Alampandria", "The Great Spirit Way" and "Fallout" probably being my favorites. I don't like all IQ but I really, really like this one.

Couple months late to the party but Resistance is quickly rising on my top 2019 albums list. Phenomenal record.

Seeing as it's December, has anyone else been spinning Tales From A Dark Christmas lately? This album is one of the better rock Christmas albums I listen to during this time of year, and it's amazing, especially the opening song. After the holiday season, I'll have to go back and give Resistance more spins, too.

Resistance got into the Top 10 of DTF's Albums of the Year "poll". Which has led to an idea growing in my mind, about running an "IQ Cup" tournament in Polls & Survivors. I ran a similar tournament for Steven Wilson songs 2 years ago, and this would run in a similar way, ie. the songs would be placed into groups and a round-robin "league" would take place, with the highest-ranked songs going to a knockout phase, and whittled down to find a tournament champion.
I assume, by IQ's placing in the Albums of the Year thread, that a decent amount of people are fans, to varying degrees. But I'd like to gauge interest, to see if there would be a decent number of participants in such a tournament. Would you be interested in taking part in something like this?

I first heard Frequency about 5 years ago and fell in love. Then I picked up Road of Bones and wanted more, so I went all the way back to Tales and Wake. They took awhile to grow on me, but eventually I was completely hooked. Today I do have all the albums, but I'm still getting to know some of the stuff from Seventh House and the PL albums. Subterrenea is also still growing on me. Not sure how well I really *know* the material.

This is why I would plan to split the songs as evenly as possible among the groups, so there should be something to vote for in every matchup. I make it absolutely clear that this is not an attempt to figure out the forum's favourite IQ song. There are way too many chance elements for that to be the case.
There are so many bands with significant discographies I'd love to see represented in Polls & Survivors, and IQ are one of them.

Thank you for responding. It might take a little while for me to work it out, certainly to arrange everything. My idea would be to have every main album track straight into the group stage, which gives us 88 songs. There are only three tracks I would consider to be "interludes", My Baby Treats Me Right on Lush Attic, and Provider and The Other Side on Subterranea. Not sure yet whether to just include them and have them take whatever results they do, or to throw them into a qualifying tournament alongside non-album tracks like those from Seven Stories into Eight and the bonus disc from The Road of Bones.
UPDATE: I've managed to cobble together (with help from Discogs) a list of 20 songs that would form a qualifying tournament, including all the ones mentioned above, a track from the Ever 2018 reissue (Lost in Paradise) and a couple from the 2013 reissue of Tales from the Lost Attic (Just Changing Hands and Dans de Parc Du Chateau Noir. The idea would be to have eight of these songs qualify for the main tournament. I don't think I've missed anything out that is an original song in its own right, ie. not a demo, remix or live version of a song already on a main studio album.

I didn't know that was even a thing. I'll include them except for the first track as For Christ's Sake is already on the list. The qualifying tournament is going to be fairly simple. People pick the eight songs they want to be in the main tournament, and either we eliminate the ones with the fewest votes and go again, or if there's enough of a consensus we'll just end it there.
Also I've decided that eight songs will qualify out of this tournament, because that gives us 96 songs, meaning a nice 8 x 12 group structure. And I've decided to keep Provider, Other Side and My Baby Treats Me Right in the main tournament as it just makes thing easier from an organizing point of view. So 88 main songs + 8 qualifiers = 96 songs total. Plus having 8 qualifiers allows me to place one qualifier in each group.

Listening to Resistance, and I'm beginning to understand why it's taking me longer to get a grip on this album than I expected. Most, if not all the songs are through-composed. They lack traditional repeated "choruses" and hooks. So my brain's having to concentrate harder to grasp each section and what it offers to the overall picture of the song.

I've finally taken the plunge and picked up Nomzamo. And it's pretty good, to be honest. Still good tunes. I already knew No Love Lost, which was always going to be my gateway into these PL Menel albums. Nomzamo is also a very good track.

Received Subterranea and Are You Sitting Comfortably? today, and was able to listen to the latter while doing errands on my lunch break. There's some decent stuff in there, but on the whole, it's pretty weak, like a poor man's Holidays in Eden. Some of Paul Menel's vocals lines are questionable, and there are some moments where it sounds like Paul Cook forgot his place in the song, because there are chord changes that he forgets to accent on the kit. It's weird. Tim Esau is probably the highlight of the album for me, because his bass playing is really good all the way through. Other than that, it's easily my least favorite of the IQ records I have. Still waiting to get Tales, The Wake, and Nomzamo.

I like AYSC quite a bit more than Nomzamo, but there are gems on both. In fact, I would put AYSC alongside nearly any 80's Rush record (and AYSC was produced by Broon, so there is that).
To my ears, War Heroes, Falling Apart at the Seams, and Wurensh are all EXCELLENT. And Drive On and Sold on You are fun...if a bit on the pop side. But I think that's AYSC's strong spot. The poppier moments from AYSC are stronger than the poppier songs from Nomzamo.

Also RE: Tales and The Wake...I hope you got the new remasters, because it helps sonically. But I initially had a bit of a tough time with them at first because the recording is just so dated. But Tales *especially* to me sounds like the album Genesis would have made as a follow up to Lamb if PG had never left. So I try to put my mind in the headspace of the sounds and recording equipment of that time period. Because jumping from the lush and beautiful production of the last several IQ albums back to something that was done in the 80's (and sounds like it was recorded in the 70s) is a really big shock.
But after I got past all that, I found two very amazing long lost neo-prog classics.
In fact, if you picked up the most recent version of The Wake, it comes with a modern day live performance on a bonus disc that might be easier to get into from a sonic standpoint.

Semi-hot take here, but in my opinion, I think IQ is better without Martin Orford on keys. I know it was a big shock when he left during the sessions for Frequency, but I think Mark Westworth and especially Neil Durant have done a better job in terms of parts they've played and sounds they've used within the band. Dark Matter is really the only album where I like Orford's contributions. The 90's albums in particular really suffer, in my opinion, due to his using mostly stock presets, and kinda lame ones at that.

Finally got The Wake and Tales From the Lush Attic yesterday. Listening to both this morning. Dig 'em both, and I can understand why they get the love they do. Definitely feel more like missing Genesis albums than anything Fish-era Marillion was putting out at the time. I'm looking forward to more listens.

I always liked the raw sound of the original, but yes, the remaster sounds amazing too! I've been looking for that remixed version on vinyl for ages now... just too expensive.
The whole album is very under appreciated in my opinion. The Last Human Gateway is a masterpiece.

Just found a used copy of the 2-disc Forever Live on EBay for 18GBP. Most of them are going for 100 USD, so finding one that translated to about $20 was a huge score, and I couldn't click "buy it now" fast enough. I should get it before the end of the month.

So I've completed my studio album catalog of IQ, and it has been fun exploring all of their music. Maybe it's because of when I became a fan, but I find myself digging the newer stuff more than their older material. For instance, I like The Wake, but the drum sound makes it really, really tough to listen to. In all honesty, the band really didn't get a great sounding album until they recorded Ever. But there's some great songs sprinkled throughout their catalog, and I think they're one of the few prog bands who can consistently write good epics. I think they've become better musicians and a better band as they've gotten older, which is something you can't say about most bands. If I were to rank their albums, it would look something like this for me:

2. Dark Matter
3. The Road of Bones
4. Frequency
5. Ever
6. The Seventh House
7. Tales from the Lush Attic
8. Subterranea

By the way, for anyone interested, I was curiously hunting around for a copy of the Subterrenea movie on DVD...and discovered that it's currently streaming FREE on Amazon Prime.
It's actually supposed to be not very good, but given my current state of IQ fandom, I can't resist giving it whirl while I'm taking some time off from work and the wife has gone shopping. It stars William Katt (of Greatest American Hero fame) and Bug Hall (who played Alfalfa in The Little Rascals movie in the 90s) in the title role.

It's too late to add it to "The Cup" now...but I am shocked to hear an exclusive IQ song "In This Wilderness" over the ending credits. REALLY COOL SONG. Now I suppose I have to break down and get the soundtrack.
As far as the movie goes... It's amazing what you can pick up when you go in expecting a really bad movie. It forces you to immediately start looking for the things you do like about it. Much of the acting was very well done. The whole movie had that feeling of: "I'll bet this looked really great on the page." Some lines of dialog struck me as being very good. Even the interactions between actors carried a surprising amount of emotion and connection, but I couldn't get over the feeling that I was seeing a really decent short story that had been turned into a passable visual representation of that short story by people who were fairly inexperienced at making A MOVIE.
Of course, the music was excellent. Which really made me want to get the soundtrack ASAP. But I don't see myself revisiting the movie in the near future....but I wouldn't say I would never watch it again either. I enjoyed it.

The only thing that brings Dark Matter down just slightly for me is that Harvest of Souls wasn't as amazing as I hoped it might be. There are parts of it I really like, but it's my least favorite of all their epics so far. And Born Brilliant is just OK as well. The first three songs are wonderful.

The whole Resistance is not that easy to get into. It's heavier, darker not as polished, and the melodies are not quite as catchy as on the previous albums. I don't mean that in a bad way. Resistance is a fantastic album and the two 20 min songs are beautiful once you get into them!

To tell you the truth, when I first read this, I thought it was going to be an actual live show. Reading it again I see it's going to be a broadcast of a Resistance show that was filmed in Germany. Which is still really awesome.
One of the things I would like to ask if given the chance is if they are ever going to re-release several out of print items. I'm a newer fan, and I'm finding out about all kinds of things that I could have gotten my hands on when they were new, but are long gone now. The Subterranea show in particular would be a neat thing to re-release IMO. I watched the entire thing on YT once, but having a DVD or BluRay would be awesome.

Just gave Fallout another spin, in order to try and grasp it. This time, there were several instance where I thought "Oh yeah, I remember this bit" and liking it. Most notably the piano section around 10 mins in. So it's fared a lot better this time round. It will click with me eventually. I'm determined.

But they're both meaty albums with a lot to digest, so I haven't explored their back catalog... until now. About to start with Tales From The Lush Attic. Will report back. I'm excited to hear their beginnings and how they've changed (or stayed the same?) over the years. The sound they have right now is magnificent, so I'm hoping to discover a lot of gems in the older albums.

I did exactly what you are doing starting a couple years ago. I hope your journey is as fulfilling as mine was. Those first two albums are EXTREMELY dated in their sound and take some getting used to. IMO, Tales sounds exactly like Genesis in a parallel universe where Peter Gabriel never left, and this is the follow up to The Lamb. But if you're not an early Genesis fan, you may not like it. The difference in going from RoB and Frequency back to Tales was extremely jarring, but now I think it's an amazing album. I *HIGHLY* suggest finding the newest remix/remaster if you can. I started by buying the standard remaster (before the newest remix/remaster was released) and I grew to like it, but sonically it still left alot to be desired. Then when they released the remix/remaster with a bonus disc of extra stuff (including MP3s of the original cassette demo) I decided to buy it again, and I'm glad I did. It's a HUGE improvement.

I just listened to The Last Human Gateway three times in a row because it's such a monster track to start the album and I love the sounds in it so much. Wow. More to say later after I hear the rest of the album one, two, maybe three times. I am having fun already.

Tales From The Lush Attic is a weird album. The first song is an epic that reeks of late-era IQ and I love it. But the rest of the record is like IQ meets Fish-era Marillion, and that's not a bad thing, it's just really jarring to hear so much speedy stuff from this group that hooked me with such a sedated sound. The two short tracks are really interesting, and the other longer songs have more of that late IQ vibe. The singer is the same guy, I assume? He definitely sounds more Genesis-y, Fish-y on this record. Although I do not like Genesis at all based on what I've heard (SEBTP, and a few other assorted songs I can't remember the names of anymore).
The version I heard is on Spotify; 6 songs, and it says it's from 1994 even though Wikipedia says it came out in '83, so I'm not sure if that's a remastered version or not. Spotify has the albums listed not in chronological order of release, unless it's in order of remasters or something, so I have to refer to Wikipedia for their discography.
Either way I really liked this album and I love the old, dated synth lead patch that's used throughout. I have an affinity for those synth lead sounds. Really looking forward to the next one, The Wake.

There’s a pro shot of a Frequency show on YouTube and there’s also a complete performance of Subterranea. If those are from the official releases that are out of print, I would pay through the nose to get my hands on them.

Somewhere out there is a full audio of the first show I saw of them back in '94. There's one track on YT, and I've scoured trying to find it but no luck.

I love For Another Lifetime, but I think trading that for Fallout would have made more sense. Still though, what a great setlist!

That was absolutely incredible! I'd never heard Last Human Gateway in full before, and it completely blew me away. The whole thing was stunning, but LHG was the peak for me personally.
It was pretty awesome to have the band in chat during the concert as well. I think I saw some of you wonderful folks there too. A magnificent evening that won't be forgotten soon.

Holy crap! I just read about the venue and it only holds 400 people for a standing event. REALLY?? I wonder if it's intentional to keep it that small. The first night is already sold out, but I'm sure someone somewhere would have an extra.

Spun Frequency today but funny thing...I've spun it before but couldn't get past the 1st track. I just didn't like it. Sounds very muddy, just a weird production. Today I went for my normal grocery shopping and errands and managed to listen to the whole album. Holy crap. I've been missing some good stuff. Still don't like the 1st track but the rest of the album is superb.

That’s weird for me. Because that was literally the first IQ album I ever heard and the first track grabbed me immediately. I still think that intro is one of Peter‘s finest vocal moments ever. There are so many other songs where he sounds just a tad nasally and maybe a bit strained. But on the intro to that opening track he is just pure butter.

It's more of the guitar sound. Peter's voice never really bothered me. But then on Track 2, the guitar sound is more pleasant, clearer and cleaner.

Since jammindude brought up first exposure to IQ, I figured I'd share mine (though I'm not sure if I have in this thread before or not). Back when I was discovering various prog bands back in 2004/2005, I eventually found my way to Marillion and the 80's Neo-Prog Movement (after discovering Transatlantic by way of Dream Theater & MP). I didn't really latch on to Marillion right away, especially their latter-day H-Era stuff, but IQ really struck a chord with me, and their latest album, Dark Matter, was the first one I got, back in early 2006.
I remember LOVING this one to death. The opening track hooked me in right away, and the "Supper's Ready"-esque closing epic really sunk its teeth into my musical skin. Having become a fan of Gabriel-Era Genesis just a year or two prior, IQ was definitely more up my alley, and while they grew as a band, they definitely kept a signature sound that was undoubtedly their own, while still evoking the spirit of 70s prog.
After Dark Matter, I began working my way backward every couple of months in 2007 - The Seventh House, Subterranea, Ever - and then Tales and The Wake in 2008. It was a slow process for me to get their albums as I didn't have a LOT of income at the time, and there were a lot of other bands I was discovering, but I paced myself out getting into their back catalog before Frequency arrived, though I didn't get to picking that one up til about a year after its release.
Having digested most of their back catalog by the time I got Frequency, I was amped up to hear NEW IQ, but for one reason or another, it didn't grab me in the same ways that Seventh House or Dark Matter did, but when The Road Of Bones was released, I felt like the band had struck gold with me again. I guess I should go back and listen to Frequency and see how I feel about it now, especially with two more albums out after it.

So I'd say we're talking about 1988 or so, and my bro, his friend and I had a decent background in prog classics (Yes, ELP, Genesis etc) and were just getting into Marillion. Through them we came across IQ, surprisingly enough the first album I heard of theirs was Are You Sitting Comfortably. It was good, I enjoyed it enough. We then started digging into their catalog and of course The Wake and Tales intrigued me more, but they still didn't have that death lock on me.
Go to a few years later, and my brother drops a copy of Ever on me. It was the first time in my life that I felt the singer was reading my mind or something, that feeling of loss throughout the album cut so deeply, and touched something I felt untouchable. I think I listened to nothing else for months after that (I think Brave broke the spell actually). Some time later my bro and his friend traveled to LA to Progfest to see IQ headline. There the band learned of a big Bay Area contingent of fans, and made a return visit just to play in San Jose, then went home.
The rest of course is history.

Since we're talking about our introductions to IQ, here's mine.
When my family and I moved to Grand Rapids, MI back in 1992, my Dad and I discovered a record store called Vinyl Solution, that was probably the best record store I've ever experienced. I discovered a lot of bands through them, and found a lot of really cool import CD singles and vinyl. They had a pretty good prog section, with a quick write up on each band. They had a cool write up about IQ and basically described them as, "what if Fish had rejoined Marillion?". Anyway, I always kind of kept them in the back of my mind. I was part of the ytsejam and Marillion mailing lists back then as well, and I remember there was a pretty big buzz about Subterranea, especially on the Marillion mailing list (I think it was Freaks?). Anyway, I bought the album when it came out, and I wasn't really impressed. For the subject matter, the music, in my opinion, didn't really feel as "dangerous" as the lyrics needed it to be. My overall opinion is that it was poor attempt at ripping off The Lamb, and so I ended up exchanging it for something else. They did stay on my radar, though, and so, when The Road of Bones came out, and I kept hearing how great the album was (and the sound samples I had heard really intrigued me), and I felt I wanted to give them another chance. Other things took priority at the time, so I think I finally ended up buying The Road of Bones in 2018. I wasn't sure of it at first, but I knew I liked it more than Subterranea, and I kept listening to it and liking more and more of it. From there, I bought The Seventh House, and then Frequency, then Dark Matter, and then the Ever remaster. And then, when Resistance came out, I was totally hooked. Resistance has everything I want in a modern prog album. It rocks, it's epic, it's dark, and they managed to find new wrinkles in their sound that I really enjoyed. After that, and because of the IQ survivor (and this thread!), I ended up completing my studio album collection of theirs. I really feel like they hit on their sound with their later material. I'm generally not a huge fan of the early material, and I definitely do not think much of the Paul Menel albums, but Ever is fantastic, and everything from the Seventh House on is brilliant as well. They've become one of my favorite bands in recent years.

In place of the postponed Christmas gigs this year IQ will be hosting an online Christmas Bash where we’ll be ‘live’ streaming another previously unseen show on 12th December (the planned night of the Dutch Christmas Bash). This time we’ll be showing the entire Subterranea concert from the IQ30 weekend in 2011, and the idea is to create, as much as possible, a live gig atmosphere.
To this end the doors will open at 19:30 and we’ll have half an hour of ‘walk-in’ music before the gig where the band will be around to talk to everyone in the chat room. Showtime at 20:00, then after the show we’ll have a ’See you in the bar’ event to chat further, groove mildly with DJ Large Marge and sink a few G&Ts… Get those wings ready and hope to see you all there!

Well, my chances of ever seeing IQ live in my lifetime are slim to none. But I did just receive my copy of A Show of Resistance in the mail. I also took the opportunity to pick up the Subterranea motion picture soundtrack. Whenever I saw it in the online store I would delay buying it because I thought it was just an instrumental album, and a solo album by Michael Holmes at that. I figured I might pick it up some day, but I was dragging my feet. But then when I actually saw the film and heard Peter Nichols sing on the closing song, I suddenly had to have it.
Also picked up a ASOR T-shirt while I was at it.
Kinda funny that my package from the UK arrived quicker than my new AC/DC album from the east coast.
EDIT - Just listening to that Subterrenea OMPST song "In This Wilderness" again. Dang, what a fantastic song. Wish it would have found its way onto an IQ album. I just love Peter's voice.

It really is something special, isn't it? I mean, technically he's an average singer at best, his range is limited and he's starting to show his age for sure, but that tone he hits is just so beautifully aching for the music, it's just perfect. I like to say it cuts right through all the bullshit in me and goes straight to the core of my soul.

Missile and Stay Down are good, but not the best of what Resistance had to offer. Dark Matter was completely left out. And Last Human Gateway should be performed in its glorious entirety.
Also, I would love to see The Province live. Pity that they never play it. In my opinion, it's probably the best IQ song of all.

Completely agree on The Province. Personally, I just like the shake up of the setlist. I’m counting 4 PL songs? Have they ever done that many in one set with Peter?

I honestly thought that a big announcement like this would get more traction from the IQ fans around here.
This is the biggest release I’ve seen since I became a fan. And it also explains why the full Frequency concert suddenly disappeared from the Frequency re-release. I guess they were holding it back for this.

As much as I'd like it, it's going for $126 after shipping to the US, and while that doesn't seem bad for 12 discs (literally $12.50 a disc), I can't really justify buying it right now, especially with pre-orders going up for both Star One and The Tangent today. Maybe after Christmas, if there are still some left and I happen to get some Christmas cash.

We’ve had a few people ask recently why we no longer take PayPal payments for the online store - here's our take on it…
Some time ago PayPal started to withhold payments and said they needed proof that the goods had been received. At first this was just for 21 days and concerned one or two transactions they’d picked at random, but it quickly escalated to all payments and longer repayment times. We’ve had quite a few lengthy calls with PayPal to try to understand why this was happening, but we very much got the impression from them that ‘this is what we do now’.
Added to that PayPal charge almost twice as much in commission as credit and debit card companies. Given that income from online merchandise is pretty much what we’ve been relying on to keep the band running these past two years, this higher commission was beginning to have an effect on what we were still able to do as a band.
So, the upshot is our current preferred method of payment is now debit or credit cards, but If you’re unable to pay that way there’s still a few other options – you can:
- pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay or Shop Pay
- pay direct into the IQ bank account (you’ll have to accept the bank charges when paying)
- send us the cash (GBP please) and we will send the order to you when we receive it
- go to your bank (if you don’t have online banking) and make a transfer into the IQ account.
If you're still having problems get in touch with us and we'll see what we can work out together.

I was having so much fun with the "Top 100 Dream Theater Songs" thread along with the ranking engine found at https://rankingengine.pubmeeple.com/ that it inspired me to do the same with all the IQ songs.
I'm not familiar enough with "Seven Stories Into Eight", or its '98 rerecord/rerelease, so I left those songs off. I was surprised to learn that through 11 albums (with two bonus tracks "Just Changing Hands" and "Dans Le Parc Du Chateau Noir") they have only tallied 95 tracks. But I'm currently going though the process of pitting these songs against each other and refamiliarizing myself with a few in order to get some order to it all.
I can't even begin to communicate how much I've fallen in love with this band over the last few years. They have quickly become my #3 all time favorite band (passing Haken) and are even in danger of overturning Dream Theater as my #2.

I consider Subterranea their best though, just for the concept. I also bought the movie on Amazon Prime and it's not that bad.

I watched it and I thought it was kinda lame…but that’s how I discovered In This Wilderness which is a FANTASTIC song, although it’s technically not an IQ song but a Michael Holmes solo track with Peter Nichols on vocals, but that just feels like semantics.

Re: Harvest of Souls. I had a tough time with it at first because I initially took part of it out of context.
Not just in the US, but in any nation at all, I find the whole "God is with our country" mentality to be extremely off putting and distasteful. But later realizing that much of the "The hand of God is on America" part was meant more ironically in the context of the song than I originally realized made it much more understandable and easier to relate to.
Remember that I only heard IQ for the first time when I picked up Frequency (gosh, I guess it was 8 years ago now, because I remember it was right after the Seahawks won the Super Bowl) and I didn't really do a "all in the deep end" dive until I picked up The Wake and Tales about 2-3 years ago. After that, I went on a tear and bought everything I could.
From that perspective, it's easy to miss that Dark Matter was the first post 9/11 album they had released and covers a wide range of emotions around not just those events, but the few years following it and how attitudes shifted once the "war on terror" got underway.

I was wondering why they didn't include an audio CD of the full Subterrenea show (BTW, has that ever been available on DVD? It was my understanding that VHS was the primary format when that first came out) but then it just now occurred to me that the 25th Anniversary is next year and they are probably holding it back as bonus material for a remaster and/or remix rerelease.

Still working on my ranking engine, but just wanted to comment how hard this is. When you take all the IQ songs and pit them one on one against one another, just about everything in the top 30 becomes painful to put against each other.
The strength of their body of work is absolutely astounding.

Well, I finally have the results from over 300 "one on one" contests. Some of these were almost impossible. Some things I want to tweak a bit, but I'm not sure how. Because while I think the top 7 feel pretty solid, almost everything between 8 and 32 feels like they could all be tied. Can I have a 25-way tie for 8th place???
And then....from that point down to somewhere in the upper 60s all feel like they could be tied for 9th. To rank these feels almost criminal. But it's just amplifying to me how many of these songs are so incredible.
There is definitely a lower tier of "also rans" from about 70 onward, but even most of those I wouldn't hit the skip button if they came on.
But here's my ranking of all IQ songs from 1-95. I did combine Nostalgia with Falling Apart at the Seams because they are so obviously meant as one being an intro to the other. I also left off the "Seven Stories into Eight" tracks because I barely know them.

It is. And it’s totally not their fault and I knew that. That’s why I elected patience. I’ve never seen shipping problems across the board like this in my lifetime. It’s really bad.
To tell you the truth, I was half resigned to waiting until mid-February and then reluctantly asking for a refund if it didn’t arrive by then. So because I was halfway to giving up completely, it came as a happy shock when it suddenly arrived.

2) Peter’s voice has really (drastically) improved over the years. As much as I love the early material, his technique was a bit nasal and slightly whiny. He wasn’t really singing “properly” and it even made him a bit pitchy at times. But at some point, he either improved on his own or took lessons, because his voice is just pure BUTTER now. His timbre on the Provider intro is much improved from the studio version (which I always thought sounded just slightly off) and sounds more along the lines of the beginning of Frequency (which I’ve always thought was gorgeous)

Totally agree with this. His biggest qualitative jump was between The Wake and Ever, but between ever and Frequency it just kept getting better. Times starting to do its thing and I've noticed some downslide in live performances, but that's expected of anyone in their 60s.

Subterranea took a very long time to digest, but I’m loving it more and more with each listen. And I still say the IQ30 full performance might even be better than the studio version. In fact, the only irritating thing about that boxed set is that they didn’t include a CD of that performance. That’s the only thing that’s exclusively video.

I received mine and it is really beautiful. Lots to take in for me as I only had IQ30. Going to be fun taking the time to go through all of the discs. I like the addition of the interviews as well, and how it's divided into sections for each album.

WOW!!!! All I can say is WOW!!! I’ve never been more jealous that I don’t live in the UK in my entire life!!! They better release this! And since IQ20 and IQ30 got a release I suppose there’s no reason to think that they won’t.
These two sets are just incredible. And yet, I guess I’m a bit puzzled by one observation. If you’re going to change the setlist THAT drastically, I don’t know why you bother with the three repeats. I would have traded out the two Resistance repeats for different songs from the album on one of the nights. Rise and Fire and Security would have been nice choices. (I’d love to hear them play The Great Spirit Way someday, but you can only squeeze in so many epics). I also would have traded the repeat performance of TROB for the often requested, but always overlooked The Province.
But it’s hard to complain with what is an otherwise amazing set.

Just ridiculous sets. Very surprised they didn't bust out Enemy Smacks for either show, maybe they're finally retiring that one, which would be a shame since it's such a brilliant live performance by Peter.

It's also a set of fairly rare material that has been out of print for a long time, IIRC, so getting it on CD means that I can have a legally owned copy of the music, which also means if anything were to happen to my digital collection, I'd still have the hard copy to rip again later on. I'll admit I haven't also listened to/watched any live IQ, so the shows on this set will be my first exposure to live IQ material!

Thanks. I'm glad I caught the PROG Magazine post about it because who knows how long this 2nd pressing will last in their store. How long did it take for some folks here to receive theirs? Being that I live on the East Coast of the US, I'm hoping it doesn't take too long to cross the Atlantic to get to me, and hopefully it arrives in one piece!

Dang... I paid $132.83 directly from IQ's store after shipping from the UK. That's a good deal, though I noticed they didn't say when their preorder will ship. They may not get their allotment until their preorders sell out so they can be sure they'll move every set they order.
If you missed out on this, definitely get it before you regret it. I opened my set the other night and it is gorgeous. I was trying to be super delicate with the pages but ended up getting some page-turn kinks in some of the pages (the paper feels different than I'm used to, it's kinda glossy).

Best of luck. At least with LaserCD, you probably won't have to be home to sign for it when it arrives (like I had to with ordering from IQ directly, which is why I missed it for two days on Friday and Saturday after two failed delivery attempts, but I got it on the following Monday). With LaserCD, I would hope they get their pre-order allotment in fairly soon, and considering how quickly mine arrived from the UK, once they get it in, it shouldn't take long to get from LaserCD to you, as they are pretty quick with shipping as well.

Agreed. Although Road of Bones is quite amazing, so give that another shot. But Ever is a wonderful album, as is The Seventh House.

We’re getting rather excited about the imminent (hopefully) arrival of the triple vinyl release of ‘Subterranea’ live at De Boerderij. This gorgeous package includes a triple gatefold sleeve featuring the prison bars on the front cover with a nifty ‘die-cut’ in between the bars (creating gaps in the cover so you can see the inner sleeve below). Pressed on three different colours of marbled vinyl, each disc has its own printed inner sleeve which shows through the bars of the front cover when placed in the first fold of the gatefold, essentially creating six different front covers!
To add to all this gorgeousness the package also comes with a six page full colour lyric sheet featuring, er, the lyrics and the story of the show by Peter Nicholls.

I actually have a really nice turntable…but I need a new stylus (and my system needs better speakers) so I don’t really get the chance to use it very often.
It’s a nice “coffee table” piece, but it would be worth more to me of it came with CDs. (Especially since the live Subterranea performance was video only on the last boxed set.) :\

Attended the gig this Saturday in Milan! Wonderful setlist (the same as the last couple of concerts, except for the encore: instead of The Enemy Smacks, we got No Love Lost + Headlong, not bad anyway...), wonderful performance!
it was really apparent that they enjoyed the show themselves, participation of the audience was top. Can't wait for the next chance to see IQ live!

It's finally here! Recorded at De Boerderij, Zoetermeer in October 2011 this is a complete live performance of IQ's double concept album 'Subterranea'.
Presented in a triple gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeves and pressed on three different coloured marbled vinyl discs this is one gorgeous triple album.
The bars on the front cover feature a die cut so that the inner sleeve appears through the bars. Each inner sleeve has two different 'central diamond' pictures so in effect there are six different front covers to choose from.
Also contains a six page lyric sheet.
Note: this is not the same recording as the 'Subterranea: The Concert' CD that was released in 2000.

Also, they recently found a box of Tales From A Dark Christmas CDs and I managed to snag one (before they sold out), along with the Tales and Ever Anniversary remixes and the IQ logo enamel pin.
Even though I already technically have the Christmas disc from the IQ Archive artbook set, I've always wanted the single disc on its own, so I'm happy to snag one for only £8.

I just recently dove headfirst into this band. Been spinning Road Of Bones for a few weeks now. Can't seem to be able to stop. I now have physical copies of all studio albums from Ever to Resistance. Have digital versions of Seven Stories into 98 and The Lost Attic. Trying to work my way through it all.

I remember someone at the old MP forum pimping Bones pretty heavy for quite a long time. I was trying to remember who and you just so happened to be who came to mind. :lol

I keep forgetting who (and that makes me feel like crap. But it’s one of those things where you meet face to face once every 5 years and in that 5 years you’ve had at least 6 major life crises, and then it’s like “pop quiz! Who was that guy who showed you that albums 5 years ago, and your ADD is screaming “I don’t even know what I had for breakfast THIS MORNING!!” But I digress…) but I ran into someone from here at the Transatlantic show in Seattle back in 2014 when the Seahawks were winning the Super Bowl, and he insisted I pick up Frequency at my first opportunity, so I did. And I was absolutely floored by that album.
It took me awhile to pick up ROB, because it was a 2-disc import and it was expensive. But I loved Frequency so much that I bit the bullet and picked it up. I was never sorry I did that.
From there I went back to Tales and worked my way forward. I think I can now say that they may have passed up Haken as my #3 all time favorite band. Just really upset that I didn’t check these guys out a long time ago. I always saw their albums on the rack, but I was listening to much heavier stuff at the time and the record store guy was always giving me the “it’s ok. It’s not heavy at all. Sortof on the Styx side of things). Not completely inaccurate from an American perspective, but I would find out later that it fails to do it justice.

Meanwhile, I discovered them around 2004/2005, not long after Dark Matter came out, and it's been a 5 year wait between studio albums ever since then. I suspect the new one probably won't come out til early 2024 just to keep up the pattern. :lol
Dark Matter, Frequency, and The Road Of Bones all came out in the summer of 04, 09, and 14 respectively, while Resistance came out in October of 19. I think if we're lucky, we may get their next album before next summer, but I'll probably expect a May/June release.

Yep, that'd fit the pattern. Been a fan since the Menel days, and they've had at least 3 years between albums since then. I know for the band it's a tremendous undertaking since they all have day jobs and are scattered all over the UK. I saw one post from Mike that just to get them in the same place for recording cost a few thousand in travel alone.

That happens, yes. I heard two of the songs from Resistance in 2017, nothing unreleased either in 2019 or 2023 though.

Been slowly moving through my IQ discovery journey and have had Frequency in my car for a couple of weeks now. What a fantastic record. This is up there with Bones for me. It's funny, the drums felt different to me and I was right. This is the one album Andy plays on. I also noticed the keys seemed more diverse and I see it was the only album with Mark on those. Anyway, great album with not a dud on it for me.
I'm not going in order either. Jumping all around. So far, I have heard Bones, Dark Matter, and Resistance along with Frequency.

Frequency is always in the discussion for best IQ album for me, along with Subterrenea and Ever. Just a great disc, got so lucky at Progstock to see them play Closer.

I got into IQ this year and Frequency is also my number one. It's heavy, beautiful, accessible, complex, dark and cheerful at the same time. Some of my other favorites include Ever, Dark matter and the debut. I prefer the newer stuff overall, though, from 2000s onwards.

Subterranea took a long time to click with me, but when it did OH BOY!
Seventh House is climbing my charts. Dark Matter is the only one I’m a bit lukewarm on. Sacred Sound is amazing but it kind of falls off a bit after that and Harvester of Souls is my least favorite of all their epics.

Harvest of Souls is a trip, amazing beginning and ending but it loses me in the middle. It just pales so hard compared to Seventh House, Province, or Narrow Margin.

The Menel albums have moments that are right up there with IQs finest material. I think that personal preference comes down to which albums “pop singles” you dislike the least. Both albums have a couple of jabs at “80s pop” and I often find myself really enjoying the pop songs from AYSC whereas I quite dislike the pop songs from Nomzamo. But there are varying opinions on this.
Most of the best stuff from the Menel albums has been performed live by Nichols. Falling Apart at the Seams from AYSC being a particular highlight.

My first experience with them was Subterranea. I bought it not long after it came out, and I tried to get into it, but I couldn't. It just didn't feel dangerous enough for me, particularly in the keyboard sounds. It wasn't until I heard the title track to The Road of Bones nearly 20 years later that I gave them a second chance, and that album clicked with me in a major way. I've gone back and purchased all of the studio albums, and I'm glad I did. I still don't like the two Paul Menel albums, but everything else is great. Subterranea makes more sense to me now, and I really do like a lot of the songs on it. My favorite album of theirs is Resistance, followed by The Road of Bones, Ever and Frequency. It's interesting to me that they've gotten heavier, darker and more progressive as they've gotten older. I'd also say that they've become better musicians and songwriters as they've aged as well!

It's a tight call between Seventh House and Province for favorite song, they're both so damn good.

For me, I was just 20 in 1997 when it came out. I think my biggest issue with it was that I didn't find any of it to be "Prog" at that time. I was listening to a lot of Tool, Porcupine Tree and Radiohead at the time, so this album felt a bit safe in comparison. In particular, the mix and the sound choices felt safe and tame, especially in the keyboards. Martin Orford's basically playing presets, and the 90's organ patch he used was especially lacking in balls. Same with the guitar tone. There was no weight to it. Also, given their comparisons to Marillion, they came off as, "what if Fish came back after Holidays in Eden?" So, I gave up on the album and sold it back to the record store I found it at.
I kept track of the band, though, and I think in 2017, I ended up finally giving them another chance and bought The Road of Bones, the 2-disc version of it. I'd heard the title track a few years earlier and liked it, but it still took me a while to get around to buying the whole thing. That album basically clicked immediately with me. I ended up getting everything else, and was super stoked to hear A Missile in early 2019.

For me, it’s just that it was SO MUCH. I liked bits of it and I could tell that there was a lot going on, but it was a 100 minute concept album to digest from scratch.
That being said, I do think the live version is a lot punchier and in your face. It’s definitely adding to my enjoyment.

I still don't understand why they sat on that video recording for so long. It was worth the price of the artbook on it's own.
I am a huge fan of Subterranea....was a backer of the movie back in the day. Got the movie, got the soundtrack of the movie. Got the original live DVD and the later live recording o BlueRay.
Can't wait to get this live release of the album.

Missed the 2016 event with IQ but have seen them three times in Stockholm thanks to PC , 2017, 2019 and 2023.

Next band to be revealed will be an internationally acclaimed one. Holding out hope....
