Title: Thank You Scientist
Post by: adace on November 15, 2012, 03:26:37 AM
It's basically a mix of Coheed and Cambria, The Mars Volta, and DT. Really awesome stuff. Check it out.

Whoops, didn't realize this band already had a thread here. If a moderator's reading this you can delete this thread.

Edit: Never mind.

I would actually keep this one open. My thread from last year was to introduce them and get donations for the kickstarter, but the title doesn't even have the band name in it (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=29279.msg1150965#msg1150965)... so this can be the official discussion thread or whatever.

That said, these guys fucking rock :metal

How did you discover them, adace?

Someone posted a thread about them over at 5/8.

Sweet! Glad to see they are getting exposure. I would go participate over at 5/8 but that decision always seems to go badly  :lol

Post by: adace on November 15, 2012, 08:02:11 PM
Yeah, I know what you mean  :lol  They seem to have more of an "in-crowd" mentality over there compared to DTF which is why I tend to be cautious with my posts there.

Post by: bout to crash on November 15, 2012, 08:09:38 PM
Well, I am cool with many of the posters over there since I was around a lot when the forums first split, but it seems like a few folks over there just have it in for me, so every time I show up they talk all kinds of shit.

But that is for another thread. I just realized- I donated to the kickstarter and never got the album! I will have to go harass them.

I don't know how you would put a label on this, but these guys kick ass.  I was checking out their facebook while I was listening, just to get an idea of who I'm listening to.  You can tell by the "member names" that these guys have a sense of humor, and then I find a pic of the lead singer on stage wearing a wig and a leotard.  Seriously awesome music from some not so serious guys.

Got their CD for Christmas after immediately getting hooked from their youtube tracks. I also heard about them on 5/8.

I think the vocalist sounds like Michael Jackson at times.

Yeah, I've listened to it a ton now and really digging it. Seems like I'm destined to never see them live, though. I missed a couple shows for various reasons, then last fall I went back east specifically to see their Halloween show with my friends' other band, and there was a goddamn blizzard! Maybe next time...

Actually, it sounds more, if Bruno Mars sang for Coheed and Cambria but with Dream Theater/Protest The Hero instrumentals....with a funky horn section.

These guys are for real.  The EP is just as good, only shorter.

About the vocals, I can't help but hear the influence of Kenny Loggins.  I don't know if it's the sound of his voice combined with the analog type sound, but there are several vocal sections that remind me of Loggins.

I'd call them an amazing progmetaljazzfusionfunk band with Claudio Sanchez and Michael Jackson's baby on vocals.  I've listened to Maps of Non-Existent Places every day since I got it.  I'll need to check out the EP next!

Just saw these guys in New Jersey with The Tea Club (another great band), and holy shit were they good!! The sound was a bit muddy, but that didn't detract from the show. They have a ton of energy live, and I'd see them again in a heartbeat.

So after seeing this band in March and being blown away, I saw them again tonight here in Connecticut. Couldn't pass up the opportunity since it was only ten bucks and less than an hour away. They played with two other local bands who were both pretty good, but I still can't get over how great they are live. I'd say that this show was better than the last one, but unfortunately the attendance wasn't that great. It seemed like most people came for the openers, and by the end of the set most of the audience consisted of the other band members and their families. But still, they were fucking incredible.

The new stuff is so good and their new album is going to be amazing. I don't know why these guys aren't more popular. They're starting an east coast tour with The Tea Club in a few days, so if anyone has the chance to see them, go!

Well, for those who haven't heard yet these guys are touring with Coheed and Cambria in the fall! I don't really know Coheed, but I will be going for sure. They're playing a venue right by my place in Denver- wooo!
Cool that a couple years ago I was like "Hey guys donate to this Kickstarter so these guys can make an album" and now look!

Didn't realise there was a thread for these guys. Discovered them a couple of months ago thanks to a Spotify recommendation (for real) and became absolutely obsessed with Maps of Non-Existent Places. What an outrageously brilliant album! I don't know they've done it but they've managed to properly fuse prog rock/metal with jazz/funk into something that flows amazingly. Genuinely blown away by the album.
Title: Re: Thank You Scientist
Post by: bout to crash on May 13, 2014, 10:18:29 AM
Yeah, it's an amazing album! Awesome that you found them through Spotify.
I started a thread on them in like 2011 because they had a Kickstarter going to make the album, but it didn't even have their name in the title (it was something like "Hey guys you might like my friends' band) and then this thread got started but hasn't gotten much activity. It's crazy how much has changed in all this time!

My buddy and I like to give each other obscure music as birthday gifts. He'll get one of the CD's and one of the T-shirts on his birthday in June. Thanks everyone. This is really fun music!

They've now signed with a new label and are about to re-release it as a remastered version. Just hold your horses for a bit longer.

I'm not sure of the point of the remaster, as the album sounds great to me already.

I really like this band.. I came across them from the WPAPU best of 2014 mp3.

I swore that the lead vocalist was claudio sanchez from coheed and was shocked to find out he wasnt but that they signed with his record label.

I wish they had more of a discography to listen to however.

So here's a little story...

Back in mid 2011, I was playing bass in a Progressive Metal band called Jovian System, and our lead guitar player was putting together a show at the Cobblestone Village in Mountain Creek Water Park in Vernon, NJ. We were of course meant to be and were the headliner for the show since he was putting it together. He booked two other bands for the show and then told us "Hey, I wanna get these guys called Thank You Scientist to play as well. They're really cool."   And he did. They were local boys at the time. Our drummer was familiar with the band as well. No band was paid for this gig either, it was just a showcase at a little spot in the water park on a Saturday afternoon. There was a modest turnout, but everybody seemed to dig the music. Thank You Scientist went on before us, and as you can imagine, I was impressed to say the least. They did the gig without their violinist actually, and maybe one other guy was missing too. Later that year our band disbanded, but three of us still got together to go see Thank You Scientist at a small joint in Teaneck, NJ called Mexicali Live. I think it was an album or EP release show.  And I think it was shortly after that, our drummer from that band forced a burnt copy of Maps of Non-Existent Places on me. haha. It was good.  I think he gave it to me in early 2012, long long long before the re-mix re-master was issued.

Good to see kids from around my neck of the woods blowin' up.

Definitely didn't need Wovenwar in the lineup. They're so boring and one of their guitarists seems like a complete tool. Nothing More aren't my thing at all but they at least put on a good show. Would have loved to see TYS and Periphery just play a long ass set each haha.
Title: Re: Thank You Scientist
Post by: Mosh on January 26, 2015, 10:07:35 PM
I checked out the other two bands and while I don't remember which was which, I remember one being extremely bland and another not being my cup of tea but at least seemed like it'd be enjoyable at a concert. I'm going to assume Wovenwar is the boring one then.  ;D

Just TYS and Periphery would've been great. I looked at the Periphery setlist and it seems kinda short, a bit of a bummer if that's because there's 4 bands on the bill.

Anyway, I don't mean to complain, I'm excited for the show at any rate!

Spencer's been dealing with Strep Throat, but maybe he's gotten over it by now! I was lucky to catch the Tampa show because Spencer wasn't even able to perform in Ft. Lauderdale so they had to play an instrumental set at that one.

After two spins, I have decided that I want to buy this album on CD.
I compared the original release with the rerelease and I think that the new version is appalling. A perfect example of brickwalling by dynamics compression.

@bout to crash: Is there still some way to obtain the original release? All online stores seem to have removed it. I'd love to throw my money at the band.

Title: Re: Thank You Scientist

I retract my statement about the new version being "appalling". It was based on the soundcloud stream from the homepage: https://www.thankyouscientist.net/2014/08/12/tys-signs-to-evil-ink/
The underlying mp3 file is very bad, lots of smearing and distortion that one could mistake for a brickwalled master. Not sure how this happened, there is no reason for a mp3 file to sound like that in 2015.

The actual album isn't brickwalled, but I still prefer the original version.
The original master sounds very "raw" and "live". All instruments are on a similar volume and it's up to you what lines you want to focus your attention on. It sounds a bit like a jazz record.
The new master is more like your typical rock record. The volumes the instruments is toyed with a lot to guide your attention. Sometimes the saxophone, trumpet and violin are dialed back, other times all instruments are equally audible.

Neither version is appalling and I'll give both version another shot before I settle for one.

Sorry I never got back to you. It ended up being a really crazy week and I wasn't even sure if I'd make it to the concert until almost the last minute.

But holy shit TYS was amazing. They stole the show as far as I'm concerned. Also ran into them by chance while waiting in line for food and got to hang out with them for a bit.  Very cool guys!

So the band were giving the EP for free at the gigs with purchase of a t-shirt, so I got to hear it for the first time. I wasn't expecting much since a lot of band's early demos/EPs usually aren't as refined or have the sound that makes the albums so great, but I was really impressed with this one! Some really awesome tracks here. Mindblowing playing too.

I'm gonna bump this again 'cause I want to post song rating that's the cool kid thing to do right right? no i guess it's not but screw it

Carnival
My Famed Disappearing Act
Blood on the Radio
Feed the Horses
In the Company of Worms
A Salesman's Guide to Nonexistence
Concrete Swan Dive
Absentee
Suspicious Waveforms

granted this album never really dips below like 8/10 anyways so it might be a bit futile to rank these and a few of them are a bit arbitrary though Carnival is definitely my favorite, but the first 5 are about on an even plane all things considered, there's just too much to love here

I can say for certainty that I'm hyped for their next album. And need to purchase/listen to the EP some more, even if it's not as good. 'Cause "not as good" is still "good".
Title: Re: Thank You Scientist

Suspicious Waveforms is my favourite track.
Title: Re: Thank You Scientist

Suspicious Waveforms is awesome. Would love more instrumentals on the next disc.
Title: Re: Thank You Scientist
Post by: Crow on March 01, 2015, 07:03:53 PM
not that I have anything against Suspicious Waveforms  :lol
It gives the band a pedestal to show off their progginess and their skill without going overboard on either and the song is certainly well-written, it just doesn't appeal to me quite as much for whatever reason. Absentee only beats it because Absentee has a god-tier back half that would be top 5 on its own but has a not-as-good front half that's probably my least favorite stretch of the entire album (not that it's bad-bad at all)

also my rankings changed again because the top 5 are basically in random order lol
Title: Re: Thank You Scientist
Post by: Crow on October 14, 2015, 11:38:01 PM
they played a new song at the concert i went to tonight, i thought it was pretty great. a bit more proggy than Maps stuff but still had a lot to love about it, definitely excited for their second album now  :lol
also got a physical copy of their EP so I'm more inclined to spin it a ton now, yeessss

Just a bump to say I really love this band. Really gutted they didn't tour with Coheed and Cambria on their recent UK tour as I know they're touring America with them.

Hopefully I'll catch them soon though I think they are great. Another great discovery courtesy of DTF  :hefdaddy

i'd put my famed disappearing act at #2 and blood on the radio or feed the horses at #3 though, it's close
the ep isn't as good as the album imo but both are still great

I really overplayed My Famed Disappearing Act after getting such a good first impression from it in the roulette though, when I heard the full album it didn't stick out as much anymore but it's still my #2 because it has tons of awesome moments.
Title: Re: Thank You Scientist

I think the EP is the best showcase of their individual playing abilities while the album shows their songwriting skills. Hopefully the next album is a blend of both.

Agreed, I'm loving the blend of prog metal with jazzy, tango, etc... The horns and violin stuff they incorporate into their orchestration is really cool. Also - GREAT vocal melodies.

Discovered this band (along with The Dear Hunter) not long after discovering DTF about 2 years ago. I was looking for prog rock/metal with a Coheed and Cambria vibe and these two bands kept popping up, love both of them immensely. Super hyped about the new album and glad I thought "screw it" and preordered with the t-shirt.

And, along with everyone else, I loved the preorder video. Can you download the tune anywhere?

Skipped the singles to save some sleepytime and as I already heard them. On first listen this album does not have a Blood On The Radio-level song but I think this album has the potential to become my favorite, and maybe even AOTY, it's really good. Standouts: The Somnambulist, Psychopomp and Caverns. The intro and outro songs are really great aswell.

That's the sense I got as well. Granted, their material takes a while to sink in and fully appreciate, but no songs jumped out at me to be the quality of Blood on the Radio.

I really liked the album, but it'll take some time to sink in and compare to Maps.

Same here, no shame in that though because Blood on the Radio might just be (one of) the best song(s) I've heard in the last few years.

Going to give this album some more listens now that it's on Spotify, still only heard it once but it sounded really really solid, maybe even better than maps imo.

I still think there isn't one song on this album that jumps out to be the quality of BotR but the whole thing is still is incredibly-consistently stellar.

Gonna give the new album a listen tomorrow probably. But before I do, I've noticed that A Salesman's Guide to Non-existence doesn't seem to get much love. It's easily my favourite track off Maps, especially when coupled with the intro. It was what first got me hooked on the band a few years ago and still gets me every time. Don't think I've really seen any praise for the song on here at all, I might be wrong though.

It is at worst #2.

Really digging the new album so far. Besides the singles which probably stand out because I know them, Somnambulist and Caverns stand out for me. Maybe the first songs of theirs I find myself headbanging to.

Another incredible album by this really astonishing band! :metal
My first impression is that this album has a very similar structure of Maps and it's a good thing. Although it's too soon to compare to Maps. Anyway if there's a "better" album, it's by a slight margin.
From Caverns to The Amateur... the album is totally VERY impressive! :hefdaddy :metal :eek

Fantastic album - not sure it'll end up being quite as masterful as Maps, but superb still.

Early favourite after two or three listens is Psychopomp. What an outrageously cool song.

Just listened to the new album for the first time. Very good. The only trouble was the hardcore/emo vocalist. I think they would be better as an instrumental band. His vocals sound really recycled, unoriginal. Not that he's not a good singer, just not my taste.

Not surprisingly, my favorite track is the instrumental one "Rube Goldberg Variations".

Oh. Here's the TYS thread.
I have been binge listening to this album end to end and pretty much my favorite tracks are
Prelude, Caverns, Mr Invisible, Blue Auromatic, rube Goldburg Variations, Psycochomp, arsonist's handbook, and The last one. The other songs have their cool moments, like the end to Need More Input is just beautiful.
Going to see them in Pittsburg in less than a week and I'm so excited. Ive been chatting with them on Facebook and they are actually pretty cool about getting to know their fans. They were telling me that one of the guy's wife went to school in Carlisle and that there is a diner they liked to go to. Being from Carlisle that was really awesome to hear :)

I just saw these guys last night in Pittsburg. You really need to see them live! there is so much energy in their performance and they connect really well with their audience. I haven't learned everyone's name yet but during Mr. Invisible, the singer encouraged us all to dance along and he even got down and danced with us. There was a therimine note in Caverns and when the bassist hit it everyone lost it! I only know their Stanger Heads Prevail but I heard plenty of older stuff too and I am really looking forward to picking up their previous albums now! Such an amazing show. I kind of got the impression that the drummer didn't like me trying to airdrum all his parts but the lead singer definitely fed off the energy we were giving singing with him. Every song was fun and every member was solid in their performance. I should be really thankful that I got to see them in this stage when they can still connect with their audience like this. Being in the upstairs of a small bar, it felt like a real personal concert. But I think in 5-10 years they are going to be playing in some big venues. They and their music deserve it.

yeah, they were a blast live, every member of the band was really into it

i'm also really glad i got to see caverns live way before the album came out, 'cause it's killer

honestly rn the run from caverns thru a wolf in cheap clothing are my favorites off the album but rube goldberg variations is pretty strong too
i've listened to it like, 3-4 times total though? so

Great band. Saw them open for Coheed on their In Keeping Secrets Neverender tour. Loved Maps, and the new album is pretty solid musically, but there's something up with the production. It sounds a little lifeless, like parts that are supposed to be more intense sound way to similar to the rest of the song, so there's a lack of impact at those moments.

I'm excited to see them live next month, because I'm sure the new songs will come across better in person.

I guess you own the original release of Maps. There is a remaster of Maps that has the same issues you mentioned, maybe even a bit worse than Heads. Sadly, this seems to be the direction they want their sound to evolve to.

I listened to the original release a bunch of times, and was about to buy it off iTunes before they took it off everything to prep for the re-release. There are some of those issues on the reissue but I don't notice them, while with Stranger Things Prevail it really hindered my enjoyment of the music the first time around.

I don't understand why people say the mix of Stranger Heads Prevail sounds lifeless? I never heard the original original album but to me, This mix of the new album sounded Really professional, Same thing when going from Vapor Trails to Vapor Trails 2013. It sounds cleaner and much more put together, which is what I look for in music, actually. Again, I have nothing to compare TYS to but I just think it sounds really solid the way it is now.

Yup, they had something going around that I sort of caught after hanging out last week. Thank gawd for vitamin c and shit. But yeah, always impresses me when musicians can be sick as fuck and still kick ass- last time I saw the Aristocrats two of them had the flu but you never would have known if they hadn't told the audience. I think about how hard it is to do my job sick and it baffles me.

Now I just need to fix my damn record player so I can listen to this album on vinyl, finally!

I had a feeling that it was only a matter of time. The psychology dynamics of a 4 person band makes it hard enough to stay together, let alone a 7 person band.

When I first got in to them, I was like "wow, how amazing that all 7 of the get along well enough to keep this thing rolling". Still shitty news though. One of my favorite bands

For the event page this Friday here is what was posted:

Quote
We regret to inform you that we will not be performing at Crossroads this Friday. Our evil folk metal buddies in Windfaerer (featuring our lovable string boy Ben Karas) were kind enough to fill in for us. Karmic Juggernaut (featuring our love-able bassboy Cody McCorry) @No More Pain and Sentient Moss put on damn fine shows as well, so don't sleep on this bill! Stay tuned for some major updates in TYS land and some exciting tour news!

Disheartening about this is that it doesn't acknowledge the two people who have already said they are stepping down, and that there has been no update on the general TYS page. It does mean that we will at least have guitar, bass, and violin staying the same going forward.

I thought this band was quite good when I saw them open for Devin Townsend back in May, but I never bothered getting anything.  I think I'd have a hard time listening to them regularly given the sound of the trumpet and how regularly it is featured.

*MAJOR UPDATE*
We are all sad to announce that we've mutually parted ways with Odin Alvarez, Ellis Jasenovic, and Andrew Digrius. Being in a touring band is extremely complicated, and it presents life with many unique challenges. We hope that everyone understands that this decision was made with the best interest of the band in mind, in order to keep the music alive and moving forward. We will keep you updated on their new endeavors, and we send them nothing but support on their respective new paths.
We are so excited to FINALLY announce our new band members: Joe Fadem on drums, Sam Greenfield on sax(s), and Joe Gullace on trumpet. We have posted some teaser videos so you can get to know the newboys. Listen in awe as Joe F. makes a drum solo out of a restaurant yelp review. Feast your ears on Sam Greenfield slaying with Vulfpeck and Three Oranges. Hang on to your seats as the BOTH JOES engage in a "JAZZ DUAL" in our brother band We Used to Cut the Grass.
Our new line-up makes it's DEBUT October 20 at the Electric Halloween Festival in Millville, NJ. We will round out this weekend with additional performances at Hard Rock Cafe Pittsburgh 10/21 and Progtoberfest in Chicago 10/22
Please send positive vibes to our NEWBOYZ as they have been tirelessly working to to prepare for our upcoming dates as well as a SOON TO BE ANNOUNCED TOUR (tune in next week) and NEW ALBUM.

Saw the band Saturday night in Pittsburgh. They were awesome, everything sounded absolutely tight and incredible.

The new drummer and horn section literally didn't miss a note, hard to believe that this was their second show together.

Set list -

Wrinkle
The Somnambulist
Caverns
Blood on the Radio
Mr. Invisible
Rube Goldberg Variations
Psychopomp
The Amateur Arsonist's Handbook
My Famed Disappearing Act

Oh also, Tom is a ridiculously, crazy good guitar player.

Hella hyped for this one, and the new baroness dropping the same day. Gonna see if I can preorder them together off amazon.
I'm curious - would you think that each disc feels self-contained/could be considered an album in its own right? Or is it obvious it's only two discs simply to fit all the material in? I'm expecting the latter in this case but the former would be rad if so

Unfortunately this particular promo had no press notes or lyrics, so it's really hard for me to answer that question. Honestly I don't even know where disc one ends and disc two begins.

That being said if I had to condense into one disc just based on my preferences it would look something like this:

1 Wrinkle
2 FXMLDR
3 Son of a Serpent
4 Chromology
5 Everyday Ghosts
6 Birdwatching
7 Geronimo
8 Anchor
9 New Moon
10 Terraformer

Just listening to A Salesman's Guide to Non-Existence and it's still my favourite song of theirs. The way the intro leads into it and dat chorus  :hefdaddy

I am 3 songs in and I am already liking it better than Stranger heads.

I have listened to Perils of time travel and Maps more times then I can count, but only listened to Stranger heads once or twice I think. It just didn't grab me, but I'm Really liking the new album so far.

Son of a Serpent is an early favorite. That song goes in some really unexpected directions.

I'm loving it. For me it's better than Stranger Heads Prevail but not as good as the debut. I'm loving the singles, FXMLDR and Terraformer are my faves, but not too sold on Swarm yet.

It is a long album but I haven't got bored at any point during it. I mean I want to keep listening to it so it's a winner.

Not going to disagree.

I'm loving it. For me it's better than Stranger Heads Prevail but not as good as the debut. I'm loving the singles, FXMLDR and Terraformer are my faves, but not too sold on Swarm yet.

My impression thus far is that is where I will slot it as well.

Terraformer is amazing and FXMLDR is my front runner for song of the year as of now.

As for Swarm:

That being said if I had to condense into one disc just based on my preferences it would look something like this:

1 Wrinkle
2 FXMLDR
3 Son of a Serpent
4 Chromology
5 Everyday Ghosts
6 Birdwatching
7 Geronimo
8 Anchor
9 New Moon
10 Terraformer

Given that it was one of my cut tracks for a single disc, it's obviously not a favorite of mine, and in general I agree it's just not on the same level as the first two singles.

Agreed. And for that reason, I haven't even finished it yet, despite two listens of the first half. Give me 55 mins and I am a happy camper, but whatever.

So I am still digesting it honestly, but so far I feel very positive about it. I really love the first half for sure. Gotta have more time with the 2nd half though.

Been spinning this one a lot, I feel like they had really good single choices this time around as I like all of those quite a bit (swarm a bit less than the other two but ehh)
Life of Vermin is another favorite, and Chromology is a pretty jammin instrumental
Still plan to give this plenty more listens, especially considering its length, but. Yeah. Good album, unsurprisingly

Y'all are really underappreciating Swarm here. It's got some killer riffs, a catchy chorus, and arguably the most energy out of any song on the record. What's not to like?

So Thursday I was hoping to score a day ticket to go see Coheed and Cambria at a nearby festival. Unfortunately I wasn't able to but by that point I was hell bent on going to see some live music.

Luckily I remembered that Thank You Scientist were playing a headline gig (although it was a bit of a drive). I ended up getting in for £11, which is a friggin' steal.

They were pretty great on the night, even though they were playing in front of about 150 people in a cellar. It was hot as hell but so was their performance. They were tight, the setlist covered pretty much everything I wanted to hear (except A Salesman's Guide to Non-existence), Sal's vocals were really good and the banter was on point.

It was definitely one of those shows where seeing them live made me appreciate how great they are. I mean I already love the new album but I've got a love for songs I wasn't too sold on (Chromology being one), after witnessing them in person.

It was also sad to know that a band playing their type of music will unlikely get as big as they deserve. Furthermore, the fact that they are a 7 piece makes me worry for how much money they make each, on tour.

I'll still be recommending them to everyone I can though  :metal

tl;dr

They were great live!

Still having trouble really getting into the new album. As someone who almost exclusively listens to albums front to back when I'm listening to music, it's just a little bit too much for me to be honest. I'm never really not enjoying what I'm hearing, but it all just kind of blends together by the end. I'd probably be enjoying it as an album more if it was a good 15-20 minutes shorter.

Thirded. As someone who likes to listen to an album front to back this is actually one of my biggest complaints in the digital "post-album" music world; Every release is so. damn. long.

Most albums used to be 45-60 minutes, with the big epic double albums being 75-90 minutes. Now EVERY album has to 65 minutes or longer. Very few albums have any business being longer than an hour. Edit that shit down.

Thirded. As someone who likes to listen to an album front to back this is actually one of my biggest complaints in the digital "post-album" music world; Every release is so. damn. long.

I've been thinking about this for a while: is releasing long albums in the age of streaming actually advantageous? On one hand, I suppose more music = more streams = more money. But I feel it'd be even more advantageous to have shorter albums if it means they get released more frequently, as I imagine that would keep your traffic up and give you more of those big, album-just-came-out spikes in streams. Then again I'm not basing any of this off of any actual data, so I could be way off the mark.

(also yeah Terraformer is still like 30 minutes too long)

1. I didn't know David Arquette played guitar for them.
2. What's up with the naked old man playing keyboards?
3. Are the cymbals a nod to Mangini?

Ok 4 thoughts.
4. That ending was cool.

I think having more tracks = more money plays a role but I think it's mostly artists not having any pressure to self-edit albums down. Back in "the day" a musician had time constraints on vinyl/cassette/CD, and studio time was expensive. They had to pick the best of the best. Now it's a free for all and they're probably not going to think, "oh I'll save that song for another album so I can get more plays overall" even though, like you said, it may actually be advantageous to do so.

Oh god, I hope they incorporate just a little Tech death into their sound. That would be awesome. But I guess then they would just be Rivers of Nihil with more horns... :corn

New EP kicks ass. I'm a little disappointed Gigglebutton is under two minutes but the three proper songs are all great and better than most of the stuff from Terraformer.

Anyone knows if the drummer is already the new one?

Nope - credits are on Bandcamp. I don't think she left until after Soul Diver was released.

Outstanding show last night, the new members fit into the band seamlessly, and they sounded excellent. Really had the mostly college kid crowd jumping, and even had a pit inspired by the heavier opening bands.

Intervals was fucking amazing. Just amazing.

They fucking killed it tonight. Amazing show, despite the short set. The crowd was so energetic; probably the best crowd I’ve been a part of, or at least top three.

Cryptodira was pretty great too. Wasn’t really feeling Intervals so I left a few songs into their set.

Thank You Scientist just shared this band/album on their socials...

A six-piece band from Brooklyn, CIVILIANS blends together hard rock, jazz, electronic, and funk music in various and disturbing ways, incorporating full horn section blasts, heavy grooves, psychedelic effects, and multiple audience members experiencing acid flashbacks. The band makes orchestrated left turns that puts the audience at the edge of their seat and heavy riffs and grooves that get them off (their seat). CIVILIANS just released their EP “Look Cool!” and also has a musical called “ALL THE BUGS ARE HUGE!!!” available online.

Trumpet, Vocals / Joe Gullace
Trombone / Joonas Lemetyinen
Saxophone, EWI / Alex Blade Silver
Guitar, Vocals / Tom McCaffrey
Bass / Osei Kweku
Drums / Josh Plath

Definitely for fans of the band, it's pretty darn good.

Saw them in Providence tonight! Awesome setlist, and they played one new song from the album they're currently working on. Sounded like a pretty typical hard rocker for them, but with a swung groove. Sal was unfortunately dealing with technical issues and spent most of the show fiddling with his in-ear monitors. He skipped a lot of his lines and seemed pretty out of it, but the rest of the band was on fire as usual. They busted out Rube Goldberg Variations, easily their best instrumental, and that was definitely a highlight. :hat

Per the bands Facebook, the lead singer has left the band due to family responsibilities.  I'll admit that the vocals were the weak link to me, but it's always tough for a band you love to switch vocalists. There's nothing that changes the sound of a band more. He was fun to watch live for sure.

The news sucks even more when you like the singer. He was actually one of the most original aspects of the band's sound to me, I absolutely love the sound of his voice. It's going to be tough replacing someone that authentic.

Man that sucks. Great singer and a great frontman.
I saw them here in Richmond every year from 2016-19. In 2017, he was having issues with his monitors, so for the last song he said "fuck it" and came into the pit to sing the last song with the crowd. Gonna be hard to replace him, but it seems to me like TYS is gonna be one of those bands with an always changing lineup.

Aww man...I'm with Metropolaris...I really dig his voice and think he's one of the unique sides of the band, and yeah, he's just amazing live. He did the same thing when I saw them open for Haken, come down and rock out with the crowd. Just a great showman.

Definitely a bummer, I love his vocals, but not a shock. I only caught the tail end of their set opening for BtBaM this past July but Sal was talking about how he was drunk because he missed his family and was looking forward to the tour being over  :(
Title: Re: Thank You Scientist

Yea I totally get it. No judgment of those parents that who have jobs that keep from being with their families, but I couldn’t do it. I was still working in care doing overnight shifts when my boy was born. My wife really struggled and being away from my wife and kid for up to 36 hours at a time was way too much for me. I started looking for a 9-5 so I could be home with them every night, within about a month of him being born.

I hope Sal can focus on his family and that the band can find a worthy replacement.

I honestly never loved his vocals, but grew somewhat used to them. I would not call them exactly *highly original* per he always sounded A LOT like Claudio Sanchez (or Joey Eppard to a degree).

I actually think their last EP might be my favorite thing they ever did. I do wonder if they might either become an instrumental band, or get someone who has a little differemt style. Granted, if they do find a new singer and decide to play live, the new singer will need to be able sing his parts. Which would suggest like Todd La Torre or Jon Davison, the new singer would likely need to be somewhat similar (or be able to sing those parts).

That'd be lame.

As great as this band is (especially live), it's kinda unfortunate that they're still a revolving door of musicians despite being around for over a decade. At this point I'm pretty sure Tom Monda is the only member who's guaranteed to never get replaced (he's the last founding member left, too).

...he always sounded A LOT like Claudio Sanchez...

I read Coheed and Cambria comparisons before and I never understood why they seem so similar to some people. Sanchez goes for an emo delivery (a word I don't use as a derogatory term) which I never felt in Thank you Scientist.

I tend to agree with both of the bolded statements.

I sincerely hope they don't turn into an instrumental band. That would completely kill my interest.
