With 13 out of 30 votes, Fade to Black is eliminated, which makes Ride the Lightning and Creeping Death the winners from RTL. Up now: Master of Puppets. This is so hard, I'm not sure what to vote for yet.
-
I do; Disposable Heroes. Not that it's bad, I just like the others more.
-
Leper Messiah
-
Damage Inc... I think Disposable Heroes might be my favorite song on this album, but I realize that I am far from the typical Metallica fan. I'll be voting off Master of Puppets probably about halfway into this survivor.

How the- what is- I don't- are you- why- ?!?!?!??!!?!!?!?!!!??!?
How the hell is Disposable Heroes the front runner for MoP's asshole? The song is energy incarnate, has a truly epic intro and has hands-down a top 5 alltime Kirk solo and the rhythm underneath it could almost function as a damn fine interlude even if it didn't have a solo on top.

I could just as easily have voted for The Thing That Should Not Be. They are my least favourites from the album and that's (again) not because they're bad, but because the others all have something else. Battery is in fact energy incarnate, as is Damage Inc. Leper Messiah has an awesome riff, Master is well, just that and that's enough not to vote for it, Welcome Home is the welcome break and the softer song and it's great as well and Orion is the best Metallica instrumental. TTTSNB and Disposable Heroes are a little bit lacking I think, but they're still good.

Because for me, Leper Messiah is just epic, and the other song that I would consider voting for is TTTSNB, which is better than both Heroes and Messiah.

Leper Messiah is top half of the album, definitely.

I completely agree... it really surprises me that people are already voting it off. I agree with Floyd as well of course, as I have already said that Disposable Heroes is probably my favorite, if not a top 3 song at the very least on this album. Interesting survivor we've got going here though :lol

One of these things is not like the other.
Damage Inc for miles.
-
The Thing That Should Not Be. The only song on the album that I've never really cared for.
-
I used to say that, but then I remembered Battery exists.

This.

Sorry guys, I don't vote. I can't. Every single song is perfect.
-
Leper Messiah
-
Flame-shield up: Orion
-
Taking the safe route...
Leper Messiah. Lesser god amongst gods.
-
The Thing That Should Not Be.

This is pretty much how I feel as well. This is nearly impossible. Every song is a perfect ten.
I call an 8 way tie to the finals.
But if you put a gun to my head, I'd probably say Damage Inc.
-
It would change almost daily. But if I had to put them in order now it would probably look like...
1. Leper Messiah
2. Orion
3. The Thing That Should Not Be
4. Master of Puppets
5. Battery
6. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
7. Disposable Heroes
8. Damage Inc.
If there are some "classics" further down the list than you think they should be...it's probably just because they've been grossly overplayed, or they havn't aged as well as the other for me.
But the album is one of the most perfect pieces of metal in rock history.

Just to probably piss some people off and - as they say - 'the words of a drunk man are the thoughts of a sober man' - it was my birthday today, here's my ranking of the album;
1. Damage Inc.
2. Leper Messiah
3. Master of Puppets
4. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
5. Orion
6. Battery
7. The Thing That Should Not Be
8. Disposable Heroes
-
My ranking:
1.Battery/Master of Puppets/The Thing That Should Not Be/Welcome Home (Sanitarium)/Disposable Heroes/Leper Messiah/Orion
2.Damage inc.
-
Leper Messiah
-
My rankings look something like this...
1. Disposable Heroes
2. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
3. Leper Messiah
4. Orion
5. Master of Puppets
6. Battery
7. The Thing That Should Not Be
8. Damage Inc.
Really tough to rank these songs though, for me the top 3 songs are pretty much interchangeable.
-
Voted for Leper Messiah.
As for ranking the album... can I just pick a top eight and call it a day?

As much as I know that any song off this album is going to be painful...I find it particularly painful that Leper Messiah appears to be leaving first.
I remember when I first heard this album that Leper Messiah immediately leaped out at me as being a classic. You have to remember that there was not a ton of progressive elements in metal at this time. I was born in late '69, and started getting into metal around 82-84. The "metal" of the time was Ozzy, Dio, Judas Priest, Motley Crue (pre-Theater) and the like. There were some cool albums, but not alot of weird time signatures (with the exception of the occasional Iron Maiden tune...they were the most prog of any major metal band around). The "big 4" were still *extremely* underground at this point.
Metallica was in many ways, my introduction to new and interesting time signatures in metal (my Rush influence not withstanding).
When MoP came out when I was 16, one of the things that hit me the hardest were things like the 5/4 intro to Leper Messiah. It just seemed so fresh and exciting at that time. It's sortof like when you guys hear BTBAM do something really new and sick for the first time. It may seem "meh" 25 years from now....but in 1986, that approach was just mind blowing.

It makes me very sad that peeps are voting off Leper Messiah already - that song kicks 10 tons of wombat ass.
Anyhoo, Damage, Inc.

Yeah that's pretty disappointing... not to say anyone's opinion is wrong at all but I never even imagined people could've thought this was the worst track on the album before this survivor. I guess that's what makes things interesting though... I just hope this won't be as predictable as I think it will be.
