Title: Elite's Roulette v. So Long and Thanks for All the Fish: THE END
Post by: Elite on October 01, 2012, 12:49:03 PM
Welcome everyone, into the arena. I can say I've been looking forward to doing this! :)

A month of trial awaits those who have applied for this test. The goal of this test is to score as many points as you can before the game is over. In order to successfully fulfill your task, you will take a total of 10 missions from me, consisting of a main task for everybody and side-missions only one participant will be able to complete. Before I will lay down the rules before you, let me introduce you to your fellow combatants;

- Scorpion
- Nekov
- Ravenheart
- kári
- Xanthul
- MoraWintersoul
- ReaperKK
- Zantera

All of you have received a PM and I would like you to reply in this thread with a confirmation that you will be playing. You will play against, but also with each other on some missions. In order to properly distribute you among teams, I have divided you into two groups, those with the letter 'T' in the username are on Team Tea, those without the letter 'T' in the username are on Team Coffee.

Here is how it will go; I have set up ten rounds of games, to which a certain theme or restriction has been coupled. Your goal, individually is to submit to me a song that is relevant to the theme or that fits the criteria. A song that does not fit the criteria will be awarded with 0 points. The rest of the scoring will be divide as follows. After each round, I will award a grand total of 24 points between the 8 competitors. This will go as follows;

Scoring:
- The best scoring song of the round will be awarded 5 points.
- The worst scoring song of the round will be awarded 1 point.
- The rest of the participants will either gain 2, 3 or 4 points.
- Note that 5 points and 1 point will be given to one participant only, but the scores in between will be dealt out to two different participants, adding up to a total of 24 points each round.

In order to avoid chaos, a simple set of rules must be applied for this test;

Rules:
- The length of the song you will send me must be under 15:00 minutes.
- Only once during the total duration of the game may you send a song with a length more than than 10:00 minutes.
- Any band that has been sent before in this roulette may not be used again, except if it got the score 1 in a round.
- A side-mission, should there be one always applies to the same song you will send for the main goal
- You may only send one song per round.

All of the above rules, including those for scoring apply for every single round, except where specifically noted they do not.

In addition, the following bands may not be used in this roulette under any circumstance Since I don't use last.fm or anything like it, since I mainly play music straight from the records, I have compiled a list of bands in alphabetic order.

Of course, it is hard to pinpoint exactly what song one knows and doesn't know. The above artists are those I know well enough to be sure I don't want to have them sent in my roulette. Therefore, if you happen to send a song I know well enough beforehand I will let you know and I will give you the chance to send something else.

Extra rule:
- In addition to the above list, I have a list of bands I've been meaning to check out. If you happen to send me a song by one of those bands on my list, I will award you with an extra point.

Deadlines:
Due to a large amount of rounds, I have set a couple of deadlines for both myself and the participants. From the moment a round starts, a participant will have 48 hours to send me his or her submission. From the moment I receive the last submission for the round, or after 36 hours are over, I have 48 hours to post the results for the round and set up a new one. Please keep in mind here that I'm in Europe and I will likely post results around the same time I'm posting this thread (in the evening).

Side Missions and Team-Scoring:
As for the side-missions; every round except for the first and the last one will have at least one side-mission. These side-missions can be team efforts, or they can be completed individually. More info on side-missions by the time you will see the first. From the first round onwards I will also keep track of Team scoring. This is mainly relevant for later rounds, when being on the winning team could give you an advantage over the losing team.

Practical stuff:
I prefer to have the song sent to me by e-mail in a format I can play on my computer (preferably mp3). A Youtube link is possible as well. I'm thinking of setting up a Spotify account in the near future, so this might be a possibility for some later rounds. A PM with my preferred e-mail address will be given once you have confirmed that you're playing.

Round 1:
This round will be open. A round without a theme, or without specific restrictions, apart from he general rules. This round serves mainly for showing me what you have got and for giving everyone a nice and easy start, before the more difficult stuff comes around.

The game will begin once all the players have confirmed their participation. I will then open the game.

I say, have fun everybody and break a leg. Let the game commence!

Listened to everything. I have my scores ready, I just need to do the writeups. I have a ridiculously busy evening in a bit, so I might do them later tonight, but a more realistic expectation would be tomorrow. Definitely tomorrow, because that will be within my set time limits! :)

I really just reacted on instinct and sent you the first thing that came to my mind which wasn't on the list. I don't think you'll like it a lot, but I do. I still have that file in my computer even though I have no feelings for anything else the band did, so I suppose it means something to my subconscious, since I never do that

Post by: Elite on October 05, 2012, 12:57:03 PM
Update time with the first results! :)
I must say, this was a very strong first round, with a couple of songs that really stood out, but unfortunately, my scoring system isn't that forgiving to people who send songs slightly less liked by me. A big plus to some is that I actually got 4(!) songs by bands on my list of bands to check out, so bonus points will be delivered this round. Let's see how it played out for you!

---

Last place:
Participant: kári
Artist/Song: Of Monsters and Men - Little Talks

I do feel bad giving this the lowest score, because kári seems to be quite fond of the song. Well, it's not a bad song at all. It's happy and stuff, but the vocals completely killed it for me. I'm sorry man. The funny thing actually is, this band was on my list of bands to check out, so it's not going to be too harsh for you on the first round. You'll get 2 points.

2 points grouping
Participant: Scorpion
Artist/Song: System of a Down - Soldier Side

Another song I feel bad about giving such a low score, since Scorpion stressed out to me that he would hate me should I dislike the song :P I don't actually dislike it, it's a nice song, but you are an unfortunate victim of circumstance. There were simply songs I enjoyed more than this. 2 points go out to you.

Participant: MoraWintersoul
Artist/Song: Soulfallen - We Are The Sand

This song was.. interesting. Initially, this one scored a bit higher, but upon firther listens, it was dragged down because of the way the song sounds, if that makes any sense. Interestingly, this was the only submission with growls and while I usually don't mind them, here they dragged the song down a bit. As a song, I think it's quite alright, but the growls are too harsh for my taste, yet the clean vocals feel completely out of place and the accent doesn't really help. I tend to be quite picky about vocals and that happened to be the case here. A good shot, but I've heard better melodic death/black metal. 2 points

3 points
Participant: ReaperKK
Artist/Song: From Monument To Masses - Checksum

The first out of two post-rock submissions I got this round and I really enjoyed it. It's a nice atmospheric tune, though a little more 'busy' than most other post-rock stuff I've heard. The samples are a nice addition, but what I found was really clever was the use of rap-like vocals somewhere in the middle. Thanks for this submission, I really did enjoy this and this band is going on my to-listen-to-list. 3 points

Participant: Xanthul
Artist/Song: The Pineapple Thief - The State We're In

Wow, this song was amazing. Very nice, soothing, relaxing and overall a great delivery on all the instruments. This was probably the simplest song I got this round, but sometime less really is more. I will check out their stuff and since this band was also on my list, that gives you an extra point. Any albums I should check out first? 4 points to you!

4 points
Participant: Ravenheart
Artist/Song: Type O Negative - Love You To Death

The DTF roulette king starts out well. This is a slow, dreary song that I really liked. I have heard of the band before, but never did I listen to any of their songs. If their other stuff is somewhat alike, I think I'd really like it. One of my favourite parts in the song was when the whole distortion suddenly switched off. Awesome moment, it still catches me unawares. A good start for you with 4 points

Participant: Zantera
Artist/Song: Oceansize - Massive Bereavement

I love songs with long buildups. This was the longest song I've gotten, clocking in at 9:59, so Zantera hasn't played his only 'over 10 minutes card' just yet. Well, what can I say? I've heard of the band, mainly because it's plugged relentlessly by Zantera, but I never knew them to be this awesome. I love the track, the slow buildup from almost nothing, into great heavy stuff. It may be a bit unfair, considering Zantea always sends an Oceansize song in roulettes (:P), but I had Oceansize on my list as well, making this a total of 5 points

Round Winner!
Participant: Nekov
Artist/Song: Arena - Cutting the Cards

That picture should say enough. For those unfamiliar, that's me, holding a copy of Arena's Contagion, the album that contains Cutting the Cards. I love fast delivery, I orderded it wednesday and got it yesterday. I have actually yet to listen to it, but I will do this shortly. This song had me at the beginning, opening with acoustic guitars. The chorus is what really makes the song, but the riffs and guitarwork are all top of the bill. I have actually seen this band live, but never got round to checking them out. That and considering I bought the CD, is worth an extra point. Nekov leads this roulette after the first round, with 6 points.
----

Current Standings:

Nekov: 6 points
Zantera: 5 points
Ravenheart: 4 points
Xanthul: 4 points
ReaperKK: 3 points
MoraWintersoul: 2 points
Scorpion: 2 points
kári: 2 points

Team Standings:

Team Tea: 5+4+4+2=15 points
Team Coffee: 6+3+2+2=13 points

---

Next Round! (Round 2)

Main Goal:

Send me something with a 'weird' instrument. This may be anything that's not in a typical band. Instruments that are not considered 'weird' are (bass) guitars, drums, keyboards/organs/mellotrons etc. and strange vocals. Be creative and send me some. 48 hours.

Side Mission 1: Choosing the Team Captain (2 points/person)
Now that you have a team, it's time to choose your captain. Your team captain will typically be the man or woman you think will score the best, so choose wisely. This is a role that will play a part for the rest of the game. For the record, being the team captain doesn't help you get more points. Everybody in a team must vote for someone of their own team and you may vote for yourself. The person with the most votes on each team will become the team captain. If the person you voted for gets the most points within your team next round, you'll earn 2 points in addition. If two members on a team have the same amount of votes, the person with the highest score at the end of round two will automatically become the team captain.

Side Mission 2: The Eighth Wonder (1 point/person)
A participant who sends me a song that's closest in length to my favourite Seventh Wonder song earns an additional point.

Nah, I don't hate you. I would just have thought that you would have liked it.

Anywho, I'll probably will be cutting it rather fine for the second round, because I'm not at my computer atm, but I should make it. If I'm an hour late or something, is that much of an issue?

No, that won't be a problem. As long as I have everything by Monday morning (my Monday morning, so technically that will be 48 hours from NOW), it's gonna be alright. I'm going to be away most of the time as well this weekend.

And Ruben, your song haunts me. A lot. I woke up hearing it in my head, I think it really wants to have scored higher. Shit.

Great! By the way, regarding your Pineapple Thief question... I'm not an expert in their discography but Someone Here is Missing (the album my submission is from) could be a good place to start, it probably has the best production out of the ones I've heard. What We Have Sown is a good EP too if you want to start with something shorter.
Title: Re: Elite's Roulette v. Round 1 Results!
Post by: Zantera on October 07, 2012, 01:33:41 AM
What We Have Sown is not an EP, it's a full album. :P And it's actually longer than Someone Here is Missing, (10 minutes to be more precise). Also, song should be sent in a few mins.

Is anything that isn't one of the instruments listed above considered as weird, or do you mean weird in context of the genre? For instance, a saxophone would be a weird instrument by the list, but in jazz it's very common.
Title: Re: Elite's Roulette v. Round 1 Results!
Post by: Elite on October 07, 2012, 04:28:50 AM
It has to be an instrument that isn't on my list of 'not weird instruments'. I get what you're oming from, but the main goal for me is to either receive something with a 'weird' instrument, like for example a saxophone, or to get a completely different genre of music altogether. So, it doesn't necessarily have to be a 'weird' instrument in the context of the genre. I could have used a better wording I suppose, but as I stated, 'be creative and send me some' :)

I'm missing Reaper's and kári's submission. Aside from that, only Zander needs to submit a captain still.

Title: Re: Elite's Roulette - Round 2 Results!
Post by: Elite on October 09, 2012, 06:01:05 PM
Another very strong round for all of you. To be honest, there wasn't a single song I didn't like in here, but I have to score some songs better than other songs. But!; don't feel dishearted if you're (far) behind. This was only the second round, so there's still a lot more to come in this roulette. Thanks for the submissions once again, some real gems in this round. I'm looking forward to what you have in store for me for later rounds. :)

Also, excuse me for the terrible writeups, I'm dead tired at the moment.

Last place:
Participant: Scorpion
Artist/Song: Orphaned Land - Estarabim

I'm sorry, this song didn't do a whole lot in this round. It was good, but not as good as the others. I loved the blend of metal and oriental stuff, kind of in the vein of stuff like Myrath, but I think I like the latter more. Still, since this band was on my list, you'll get an extra point. 2 points in total.

2 points grouping
Participant: MoraWintersoul
Artist/Song: Apocalyptica - Farewell

You said you would be amazed if no-one else had sent stuff from Apocalyptica, but you were the only one. I have seen these guys live once and they were awesome on stage. Cool song, especially with the cellos and stuff. 2 points

Participant: Xanthul
Artist/Song: Sigur Rós - Hoppípolla

Ah, Sigur Rós, a band I should have checked out long before. I have actually heard some of their stuff and found it very nice, but I haven't listened to the band enough to fully appreciate it. This song was very nice, soothing and ambient, but maintaining a bit of a poppy character. Cool stuff. 2 points, plus an extra point for the band being on my list. I should immerse myself more into their stuff. 3 points total.

3 points grouping
Participant: Ravenheart
Artist/Song: Gary Numan - Pressure

This song was very interesting. Starting out very dark and industrial, the guy's vocals are something I had never heard before. Cool song, but I'm not sure whether I could listen to an album full of this. I once had a girlfriend who loved this darkwave stuff, but it wasn't for me. This song however I really enjoyed, so you'll get 3 points.

Participant: ReaperKK
Artist/Song: Dave Matthews Band - Stay (Wasting Time)

How the hell have I never heard this before? This stuff was very good. Groovy and nice, great stuff. I'll check out the full album later, which I have seen in some top 50 list around here (I can't remember who it was), but this is great. 3 points

4 points grouping
Participant: Zantera
Artist/Song: Gazpacho - Hell Freezes Over I

Awesome progressive rock here. Part I of a couple of songs, but this song alone was enough to convince me I should get into their stuff. I've seen the name mentioned a lot, so I will dig in to their stuff eventually. Amazing stuff. 4 points

Participant: Nekov
Artist/Song: Solaris - Apokalipszis

Nekov does it again, but this time by sending a very obscure Hungarian band (you can tell by the name of the song). This is great quality progressive rock stuff with a nice flute thrown in the mix. The only thing dragging this down would be the relative poor production, but it's old stuff and I can listen through that. This really caught me by surprise, thanks for the submission! 4 points.

Round Winner!
Participant: kári
Artist/Song: Vampire Weekend - M79

Partly because his other song still haunts me, but mainly because this was undoubtedly the best song I got this round. I loved the atmosphere this song generates. It's happy, it's catchy and it has some great hooks. It's kind of in the same style as that Of Monsters and Men song, but I enjoy this one a lot better for some reason. This made my day, great stuff. 5 points to you! :)

---

Side Mission 1:

Nearly unanymously, Nekov has been chosen as the captain of Team Coffee! However, since kári has gotten the highest score for this round, only ReaperKK, who submitted him as the captain gets 2 bonus points.
As for Team Tea, Zantera got the most votes, so he has been chosen as the team captain. Because he also got the highest score on his team this round, both Xanthul and MoraWintersoul who voted for him get 2 bonus points

Side Mission 2:
kári said it in the e-mail he sent me and he was right; my favourite Seventh Wonder song is Hide and Seek, which runs at 7:46. This basically means the longest song gets bonus points, since all songs were shorter than than this round. This was Gary Numan's Pressure, so Ravenheart gets a bonus point.

---

Current Standings:

Nekov: 6+4= 10 points
Zantera: 5+4= 9 points
Xanthul: 4+3+2 = 9 points
Ravenheart: 4+3+1= 8 points
ReaperKK: 3+3+2 = 8 points
kári: 2+5= 7 points
MoraWintersoul: 2+2+2= 6 points
Scorpion: 2+2= 4 points

Team Standings:

Team Tea: 9+8+8+6= 31 points
Team Coffee: 10+8+7+4= 29 points

---

Next Round!

Main Goal:

Send me a happy song. SOngs will be judged by how happy I get from them, aside from how much I enjoy them, although both those things are interconnected. A great example would be both kári's submissions, but I'm open to anything happy, whether it be the lyrics, the melodies or the atmosphere of the song. The theme is pretty broad once again, but anything that doesn't fit the category won't be judged nicely, so send wisely :) 48 hours again.

Side Mission 1: Knowing the Captain (2 points/participant)
Guess how many points your team captain will get next round. If you get it right, you will receive an extra 2 points. As for the captains themselves, they have to guess what the other captain will get. Let's start the gambling!

Side Mission 2: Happy in a heartbeat (1 point/participant)
Be brave and send me something under 2:30. If you manage to score more than three points initially, you'll get an extra point for making me feel happy in a short amount of time!

Side Mission 3: Happily ever after (1 point/participant)
Use up your only 'over 10 minutes card' and send me a song over 12:00. If you manage to score more than three points initially, you'll get another point for bringing happiness over a longer amount of time!

---

Good luck! :)

RESULTS!

Again, the majority of the songs I enjoyed a lot. I kind of hate myself for setting up the scoring system this way, because I sometimes feel more songs deserve an equal score, so don't be dishearted if your song got a lower score. I'm very thankful for the stuff you have sent me so far, I'll have a lot to check out at the end of this roulette and we're only on round 3!

---

Last Place:
Participant: kári
Song/Artist: FM Belfast - I don't want to Go to Sleep Either

I honestly don't know what it is with you and your submissions and while I can hear this isn't a bad song, it didn't do anything to me at all. It definitely fit the criteria, so no complaints on that. It was a fun song, but I found the vocals to be annoying. I'm sorry man 1 point :(

2 Points grouping
Participant: MoraWintersoul
Song/Artist: Sieges Even - Stigmata

Again, I feel bad for having to give you a low score again as well. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the song in itself, but it kind of dragged at the end. In fact, I think it suffered from being too long and didn't stay interesting all the way through. 2 points

Participant: Ravenheart
Song/Artist: Amanda Palmer - Oasis

Now, this was a very interesting pick. Without paying attention to the tracks and putting all the submissions on shuffel, I initially thought this was a man singing :lol This song was fun and a joy to listen to, thanks! 2 points

3 Points grouping
Participant: ReaperKK
Song/Artist: Antoine Dufour - Wapus

The only instrumental song I received, but it was beautiful. I love how instrumental music can make you feel happy and this man's playing did just that. I don't know that much instrumental guitar music, but this probably one to check out. :) 3 points

Participant: Zantera
Song/Artist: The River Empires - A Toast to the Snake King

This was a very fun song indeed, with a bit of a 'western' feel to it, with the banjo and the overall atmosphere. I actually really enjoyed this song and I would like to check out more by this band. Your description of the song in the e-mail completely checks out for me as well. This is great! Cool stuff. 3 points.

4 Points grouping
Participant: Nekov
Song/Artist: Illegal Aliens - Ratrace

Telling me I can turn the song off after 2:30, because it will get 'weird' then won't help you. In fact, that weirder part propelled the song into another high score for the Team Coffee leader. Nekov delivers once again with an awesome prog song, I liked it a lot! 4 points

Participant: Xanthul
Song/Artist: Foxy Shazam - Oh Lord

Damn, that woman can sing! That was the initial thing I thought, but apparently it's a man. Holy shit, the second time I heard gender ambiguity in the vocals. This song is fun, this song rocks! 4 points for you!

Round Winner!
Participant: Scorpion
Song/Artist: The Fratellis - A Heady Tale

No way you're getting a mere 2 points this round again mister! This song got me straight away! Pretty much exactly what I was looking for in this round, so that means you're getting the top score this time. 5 points.

---

Side Mission 1:
There's a couple of lucky buggers, all on Team Coffee, who guessed that Nekov would get 4 points! ReaperKK, kári and Scorpion, an extra 2 points are coming your way! On top of that, in Team Tea, both Xanthul and MoraWintersoul guessed that Zantera would get 3 points which he did. Then, last but not least, Nekov also did this. Another 2 points to those three people!

Side Mission 2:
Only Ravenheart took this one seriously and since his song was indeed under 2:30, he gets an extra point!

Side Mission 3:
Actually, as I had guessed, nobody used this.

---

Current Standings:

Nekov: 10+4+2= 16 points
Xanthul: 9+4+2= 15 points
ReaperKK: 8+3+2= 13 points
Zantera: 9+3= 12 points
Ravenheart: 8+2+1= 11 points
Scorpion: 4+5+2= 11 points
kári: 7+1+2= 10 points
MoraWintersoul: 6+2+2= 10 points

Team Standings:

Team Coffee: 16+13+11+10= 50 points
Team Tea: 15+12+11+10= 48 points

---

Next Round! (Round 4)

Main Goal:

Ever wondered when you username might come in handy? Well here we go! The next round is open, but with one very tight restriction. You must send me a song based on your username. The first letter of your username may be the first letter of the band the song is by, the second letter may be the first letter of the album the song is from and the third letter may be the first letter of the song title. For instance, I'm Elite, I may either send anything from a band starting with an E (Epica, for example), I may also send anything from an album starting with an L (Lateralus by Tool, for example), or I may send a song starting with I (I Am The Walrus by The Beatles, for example). Get it? Now get me this stuff. I want studio recordings only, no live tracks!

Side Mission 1: Do the double
If you manage to send me a song that's based on TWO letters from your username, you'll get 2 extra points. I could for instance send 'I Am Ahab' from Mastodon's Leviathan, which has the I for song title and the L for album title. Doing the triple won't net you more points.

Side Mission 2: Apply water to the burned area
The person with the least points at the end of round 4 may steal a point from an opponent of choice. Since we don't steal from teammates, this person has to be on the other team.

One question, what happens with common words such as "The", "A", etc. Do they count as the first letter of the artist/song/album or should the next one count? For example, would The Dear Hunter be a "T" or a "D"?

First letter? Second letter? I went the whole 9 yards with my latest submission.  :hat

That's impressive, but I'm not sure whether or not to let your submission count, since the song title doesn't start with a V, it's not from an album starting with an A and the artist doesn't start with an R.. Considering what you sent though, I might just let this one slip through unnoticed, but I haven't listened to it yet.

One question, what happens with common words such as "The", "A", etc. Do they count as the first letter of the artist/song/album or should the next one count? For example, would The Dear Hunter be a "T" or a "D"?

Alright, let's just get this out of the way; songs, artists or albums starting with 'The' or 'A', may be sent using the T or the A, but also with what comes afterward. In your example, The Dear Hunter may be sent using the T or the D (but not the H!).

A song starting with K from a band starting with N, perhaps? Or just a song from a band starting with an N, a song from an album starting with an E or a song starting with a K?

Your current submission doesn't fit the criterion, so if you would, I'd like to have something else. I'm sorry, again :)

Oh man, I can hear the fans going crazy. Blasphemy! I just don't know what it is, I saw the band live a couple of weeks back at a festival and I didn't enjoy it at all (I actually posted that somewhere on these boards, the Circus Maximus thread I think). The music is perfectly fine, but Swanö's vocals completely kill the song. I find him very boring to listen to, but since I know there's people that really love this band I won't comment on it further. I'm sorry man, this was not yourround. 1 point.

2 points grouping
Participant: MoraWintersoul
Artist/Song: Be'lakor - Remnants

I'm really too harsh to you, aren't I? I don't mean to, but I just didn't really like this song either. To give you a hint for further rounds; there's very little growls I can tolerate long enough to listen through a whole song and the specific criteria are very difficult for me to pinpoint, if there are any at all. Well, that was the problem here as well, too much harshness and stuff, though I do feel sorry for having to give you 2 points again.

Participant: Xanthul
Artist/Song: The XX - Night Time

I have heard good things about this band from a girl I know, who's really into them, but never really checked them out, nor had I the intention to, since her music taste diverges widely from mine. I must say I was pleasantly surprised, but I found the song lacked a buildup or something like it, having the same pace and feel throughout, which wasn't too interesting to start with. I can see why people would like this though, but you have sent me better stuff so far. 2 points.

3 points grouping
Participant: Ravenheart
Artist/Song: Eternal Tears of Sorrow - Angelheart, Ravenheart

I take it this is the song your username derives from? Pretty awesome stuff then, very orchestral and with great guitar work. The vocals could be some better once again (I hate how they're so easily a deal breaker for me, but unfortunately that tends to be the case), but they didn't bother me that much. This was some great symphonic death metal, thanks. 3 points.

Participant: Scorpion
Artist/Song: Trivium - Of Prometheus and the Crucifix

I think I have heard this song before. Actually, I'm sure, it was in 2009 when this album was just released and I tried to get myself into Trivium. I didn't like it back then and never tried again. This song however, was very cool and I could see myself listening to an album of this. Shogun is still the only album I have on my computer, but as said, I never listen to it anyway. I'll try it again someday, because this song was pretty awesome. 3 points and thanks.

4 points grouping
Participant: kári
Artist/Song: Portishead - Roads

That woman's vocals sealed the deal for me. Wow, very relaxing music, almost electronic/ambient-like, with the beautiful vocals on top. Wow, an extra point for the band for you, because I had heard of them and because this is beautiful. 5 points

Participant: Zantera
Artist/Song: Amplifier - Neon

I missed this band opening for Anathema earlier this year and I really wanted to see them, because I had heard good things about them but never checked them out, but damn, this was amazing. Very good track, cool work with instruments, nice vocals, good stuff. 4 points, plus an extra point for the band makes 5 points

Round Winner!
Participant: ReaperKK
Artist/Song: Fair to Midland - April Fools and Eggmen

Holy shit. That's all. This song was the clear winner of this round. I want to hear much more from these guys and I am definitely going to check out the album this song came from. This band was already on my list, because of great mentions of them on the forum, so the extra point makes a total of 6 points.

---

Side Mission 1:
Ravenheart sent a song with his full name in it. Though it didn't qualify for any letter, I let it slip, because of the full username. I therefore won't give it 2, but just 1 bonus point.
Scorpion sent a song starting with O, nothing more, no bonus points for you.
Zantera sent a song by the band Amplifier, from their self-titled. The song starts with an 'N', so that's 2 bonus points.
kári sent a song starting with an 'R', so that's alright, but that means no bonus points for him.
Xanthul sent a song from a band starting with 'X', with the song starting with an 'N', that means 2 bonus points.
MoraWintersoul sent a song from an album starting with 'O' (Of Breath and Bone), the song itself starting with 'R', so that means she'll get 2 bonus points.
Nekov sent a song from Nightingale, which starts with an 'N', no extra bonus points.
ReaperKK sent a song starting with 'A', but none of the other letters matched, no bonus points.

Side Mission 2:
Take a look at the scores and we'll see TWO people have the lowest score at the moment. This is not really a problem, since both can steal a point from someone on the other team of their choice, but since Scorpion is on holiday now, he can't do it at this moment. I think the best way to solve this is to wait until he's back and have him decide then. Mora can commence the point stealing from an opponent of choice (on the other team), just say the word.

---

Current Standings:

Xanthul: 15+2+2= 19 points
ReaperKK: 13+6= 19 points
Zantera: 12+5+2= 19 points
Nekov: 16+1= 17 points
Ravenheart: 11+3+1= 15 points
kári: 10+5= 15 points
Scorpion: 11+3= 14 points
MoraWintersoul: 10+2+2= 14 points

Team Standings:

Team Tea: 19+19+15+14= 67 points
Team Coffee: 19+17+15+14= 65 points

Next Round!

First off a couple of things; I'm sorry for the delay this round and the last one have brought. In order to get this thing going back on track again, also since there are a lot of rounds to come, I will try to fully commit myself to posting the results within four days after a round has started. Furthermore, I'm really thankful for all your submissions so far, you've hepled me discover some great stuff that's been put on my ever-growing list of things to check out. I think there's still a lot more to come. Thanks for your patience for this round and good luck with the next one. Also, since Scorpion is on a holiday, he's already asked me the themes of the next couple of rounds and I already have his submissions up to round 8, since he won't be on DTF for at least two weeks. I won't discount any points from him should any submissions be double, since this would be beyond his control. I haven't listened to anything he has sent me yet, I will only do so when a round starts.

Main Goal:
Send me anything that's under two minutes. That's right, only TWO minutes. To make it even more ridiculous, I'm giving you the option to send me up to two songs, as long as the total time is less than two minutes. I will score only my favourite from the two. Any 10 seconds (rounded UP) more than 2 minutes, will cost you a point.

Side Mission 1: Shorter equals better.
The shortest song that gets scored receives two extra points.

Side Mission 2: The shortest straw.
The team that sends the shortest running time of all the songs sent (including ones that don't get scored) combined will have each member gain a point.

Post by: Elite on October 30, 2012, 06:22:44 PM
As said in my post above here, you guys gave me a very hard time to rank these songs. There was no bad song between them and I really did enjoy all of them. I think I can safely say this was the best round so far, despite the short lengths of songs and it was definitely the closest in terms of rankings. It took me way more listens than in the rounds before this one, before I could justify my scores to myself. Thanks for sending me awesome stuff, all of you. Now; RESULTS:

Last Place:
Participant: ReaperKK
Artist/Song: Michael Kelsey - Blue Gravity
Length: 1:31

I feel bad, once again, having to give a song the lowest score. This track was amazing and I really loved the work between the guitar and the ambient soundscapes. It creates a mystifying atmosphere and it's a shame that this track isn't any longer. I'd love to hear more from this guy, if his other stuff is a bit like this and I'm sorry for only giving you 1 point.

2 points grouping
Participant: Scorpion
Artist/Song: Buckethead - Big Sur Moon
Length: 1:13

(Also sent, but not judged was Somastate - Reversals, clocking in at 0:36)

From one guitarist onto the next. Buckethead does a similar thing, but only uses his guitar and an array of effects (most notably delay). I have heard of the man and I have heard some of his things, but never this track. It's an impressive composition, but in this case, I think it's good it's not any longer, though it's very good while it lasts. 2 points.

Participant: Zantera
Artist/Song: Converge - Tender Abuse
Length: 1:25

First off, I don't dislike this song at all, I think this is very awesome, but in this round it stuck out like a sore thumb. Everything else I got was more mellow or laidback and this track came blasting across. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed it and loved the heaviness and grooviness of the track and what I especially like is that such massiveness can be put together in such a short amount of time. Now, there's whole genres of music with songs less than two minutes *cough*grindcore*cough* which don't interest me at all, but this was an awesome submission and certainly something I did not expect in this round. 2 points.

3 points grouping
Participant: kári
Artist/Song: Squarepusher - Tommib
Length: 1:19

Probably the weirdest track I got in this round, with some weird ambient sound, no real direction, a fade-in intro, a semi-sudden end and no vocals or distinctive use of instruments at all. I loved it, it sounds like some electronic nothingness, if that makes any sense. I doubt I could listen to a full album of this stuff, but it works wonders in small doses. 3 points.

Participant: Xanthul
Artist/Song: Neutral Milk Hotel - The King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1
Length: 2:00

The first song so far with audible lyrics (no, I'm not mocking growls here) and it's wonderful. I loved the addition of brass and other instruments and the higher sung vocals in the last half-minute. Despite only being 2 minutes long, the song builds up very nicely and I really wonder what I could hear in Part Two. I'm going to check out the entire album this track came from. 3 points.

4 points grouping
Participant: MoraWintersoul
Artist/Song: Insomnium - Nocturne
Length: 1:58

This track just sounds like an introduction to a melodic death metal album, and I believe it is, especially with the volume swell at the end. Not judging a single song by what's more on the album, I found this song very relaxing, but it's very dark as well and this is mainly because of the strings and the synthesized soundscapes behind a haunting piano melody, sometimes backed up my some drums. Very nice pick and for that you'll get 4 points.

Participant: Nekov
Artist/Song: The Flower Kings - Garden of Dreams: Mr. Hope Goes to Wall Street
Length: 1:43

So, this song is part of a multi-part epic by The Flower Kings. I have meant to check these guys out forever and this small snippet just confirms that I should do this. The downside from this snippet is that it's not longer and as a single track probably doesn't do the whole thing justice, mainly also because it doesn't start or end properly. However, this is some great proggy goodness, which I really like. You'll get 4 points, plus an extra point for the band, totalling 5 points.

Round Winner!
Participant: Ravenheart
Artist/Song: Black Tape for a Blue Girl - The Doorkeeper
Length: 1:17

Wow, this is beautiful. The amount of beautiful put together in a composition of such a shrt length is pretty astounding. Granted, it's not a particularly difficult song, but the piano melody works wonders and that woman's voice is amazing! This was the best song I got this round, thanks. 5 points

---

Side Mission 1:
Scorpion sent two songs, being the only one who did this. Both his songs where the two shortest sent (1:13 and 0:36), so he gets 2 extra points for having the shortest song ranked in this round.

Side Mission 2:
Team Tea sent a total of 1:25+2:00+1:58+1:17=6:45
Team Coffee sent a total of 1:13+0:36+1:31+1:43+1:19=6:22
All the members on Team Coffee get an extra point for sending the shorter length of songs!

---

Current Standings:

Nekov: 17+5+1= 23 points
Xanthul: 19+3= 22 points
ReaperKK: 19+1+1= 21 points
Zantera: 19+2= 21 points
Ravenheart: 15+5= 20 points
kári: 15+3+1= 19 points
Scorpion: 14+2+2+1= 19 points
MoraWintersoul: 14+4= 18 points

Damn, those results are very close to eachother!

Team Standings:

Team Coffee: 23+21+19+19= 82 Points
Team Tea: 22+21+20+18= 81 Points

And the teams are almost even as well. Wow!

Next Round!

ROUND 6

Main Goal: "The Silly Round"

Yes, you read that right. Next round is the silly round. I want you to send me something stupid/silly/bad/weird as long as it's music related. The goal of the upcoming round is to make me laugh or giggle and what you send me can be anything; a very bad song, a hilarious video clip (on youtube for instance), a terrible cover of a song, a band screwing up on stage or a fan-made video of a song. You name it! This round will have no restrictions as to what bands you can or can not send, but I won't have any stuff with Dream Theater's music. Since this is the silly round, the ranking system will be different for next round as well. If your submission makes me laugh, I'll give you 1 point. If your submission makes me giggle, I'll give you 0 points. If I'm indifferent to your submission, you lose a point and if I don't find anything funny about your submission at all, you'll lose 3 points. This round will not have any side goals. Find me the funny!

Title: Re: Elite's Roulette - Round 5 Results!
Post by: Elite on October 30, 2012, 07:15:13 PM
You mean you have the highest score again? :P

Yeah, well it's basically that. Make me laugh with something music related (Note: a random 'funny' video with music playing in the background does NOT count) and you'll get a point, if not either 0, -1 or -3. I actually thought of doing the scoring backwards (from -5 to -1), but this is a more honest approach for something as arbitrary as 'funny stuff'.

You and me both! I have no idea what Rich actually finds funny in music, 'cause normally music that makes you laugh isn't a subject that you talk about that much. All I know is that I laughed for a good five minutes when hearing that song, but if he doesn't appreciate this kind of humour, then I'm fucked.

ROUND 6 RESULTS

Scoring a round has never been funnier. Thanks for the awesome submissions that enlightened my evenings.

Participant: Nekov
Artist/Song: Zlad! - Elektronik - Supersonik (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWOzUzJd6wM&feature=related)

Holy shit, this is one of the worst things I have ever seen or heard, it had me cracking up almost right from the beginning. This was what I was looking for, thanks man. A warning to everybody who will read this though, do NOT watch the vid I conveniently placed as a link in the title. It's absolutely terrible. 1 point for you!

Participant: Ravenheart
Artist/Song: Crotchduster - Mammal Sauce (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MbhPWud8kM)

This is fucking amazing. At first I was like 'what the hell is this', but then it became hilariously and ridiculously silly. This was some wacky stuff but I really liked it. Truly some 'wtf'-worthy stuff. Seriously people, check it out :lol 1 point

Participant: Scorpion
Artist/Song: Steel Panther - Turn out the Lights

I get that this is a parody band of some sorts, but apart from the lyrics, which are a bit infantile, I didn't really find this funny. Sorry man -1 point for you.

Participant: Zantera
Artist/Song: Dog Fashion Disco - Private Eye

I actually really enjoyed that song, but the spoken word stuff in between is amazing. I didn't really get it up to the end, but at the end is fantastic. The last 30 seconds had me grinning, but it wasn't as funny throughout. I really enjoyed the song, but since the goal was to send something funny, you're going to have to with no point changes.

Participant: Xanthul
Artist/Song: Richard Cheese - The Girl is Mine

Sorry man, but I actually know Richard Cheese and I think he has song that are far funnier than this one that you could have sent. This is alright, but nothing spectacular and I didn't really find it funny, considering I know his music and know I love some of his tracks that would have definitely scored you a point. For this one, I'm giving you -1 point. Just a case of bad luck, sorry dude.

Participant: MoraWintersoul
Artist/Song: ШТÜРM - Sounds of Nordic Trveness (Gollum vocals) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=QW_u63vnruU#t=620s)

What the hell is this? This is so ridiculously bad that it's funny. It's random black metal-ish noise with wtf-vocals on top (that's definitely NOT Gollum :lol ) Wow, how do you even find stuff like this? The scream at the end reminded me of this guy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DbUPjEbIvA). There's no way I can give this any less than 1 point.

Participant: ReaperKK
Artist/Song: The Lonely Island - Turtleneck & Chain (feat. Snoop Dogg)

What the hell did I just listen to? That was weird, in a bad way, but I guess it could be considered remotely funny. I don't like rap music at all though, but I'm not going to give you the lowest possible just because of that. -1 point it is.

Participant: kári
Artist/Song: Ian Thomas - Haters (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HoDUpdzGNo)

I guess this is only funny if you understand Dutch. The videoclip is generic as hell and hence pretty bad, but the dude 'singing' is funny to me, mainly because rapping in Flemish sounds fucking weird to my ears. Also, kári pointed out the lyrics are a direct translation of some English quotes, but I couldn't really find this back, except for the words in the 'chorus'. Nevertheless, this was bad and it was funny. 1 point

Next Round!

Main Goal: SEVENS

Since next round will already be the seventh round in my roulette and seven just happend to be a favourite number of mine, this round will be open, save ONE restriction. The song MUST contain a 7 anywhere in the duration. Because this round has 7 as its theme, the scoring for next round will also be different from the rest of the roulette. Scoring goes from 0-7, with every score being dealt out only once, so make sure you'll send something you're confident in. I know this type of scoring is going to be difficult, since everyone so far has sent me some awesome stuff, but I will have to disappoint one player with a 0 point gain next round.

Side Mission 1: Seven Deadly Sins
Send me a song in line with any of the seven sins (Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, Pride) for an extra point.

Side Mission 2: Seven Ways to Win
Guess correctly as to how many points you will score to gain an extra 2 points. (Yes, this may definitely be misused by cunning players, but there's risks).

---

And, a premiere! What's in store for all of you participants? Looking to the future:
For the first time in this roulette I'm going to reveal the themes of the next rounds, because the roulette is almost over. Round 8 will be a round comprised of instrumental music only and the scoring system reverts back to what I've used all the way through so far. Round 9 is a round where you can gain a massive amount of points through a wager system which will be revealed in due time. What I can tell already is that in this round, you may try to better one of your previous scores and send me multiple songs to gain extra points. The system has been thought out and will be revealed when this round starts, because, that's where the real deal comes in; NOT EVERY PARTICIPANT WILL PLAY IN THE FINAL ROUND. After round 9, only three people go through and being on the winning team helps. As of now, everybody still has a fair chance of winning, the scores are pretty much even, so I suggest you just give that extra push for the final rounds. I believe in you :)

 I knew you would laugh it that. It is so ridiculous I can't decide whether it's a joke or it's meant to be serious. I'll have to think about this round but let e ask you something about the upcoming rounds and whatnot. When you say you need to be on the winning team does that mean that even if I end with the highest score I may be left out of the final round?
Title: Re: Elite's Roulette - ROUND 7 STARTS!
Post by: Elite on November 06, 2012, 05:21:58 PM
No. It;s just that I thought of something to factor in the teams as well, since I haven't really done anything like that, but it's NOT going to be a decisive factor. It's just that I don't want everyone to get into the final round, because it will be way too much to listen to for me if I do that :P It will most likely be the three people with the highest scores at the end of round 9.

Title: Re: Elite's Roulette - ROUND 7 STARTS!
Post by: Elite on November 07, 2012, 04:11:51 AM
No, I meant cunning players could screw up the point distribution but there's risks to that. The thing here is that you could send me something ridiculously bad and say you'll get 0 points, thus getting the 2 point bonus anyway. There's not really a way I can prevent this though :lol The 'risk' involves multiple people doing the exact same thing.

Of course though, I don't want you to send me something bad.

Not likely. In fact, I fear I have to postpone the results to tomorrow night. I'm sorry guys, I've been way too busy with stuff and I was (and am now) ridiculously tired, so much that I actually had a nap this afternoon, something I never do. I have listened to everything you sent me, but I will do so again tomorrow. The results will be there tomorrow, of that I am sure, because I can see now that I will have time to do it. I'm sorry for the delay and my excuses that my time restrictions aren't working out as they should.

Post by: Elite on November 14, 2012, 05:42:24 PM
This was another very good round and once again I hate myself for coming up with this ranking system. I received some song that I really didn't want to give a low score to, but it turned out this way. Thanks once again for all of your submissions.

ROUND 7 RESULTS

Last Place:
Participant: Scorpion
Artist/Song: The Human Abstract - Faust

I'm so sorry for placing this low, I really wanted to like this, but for some reason it didn't click with me at all. I didn't like the vocals and some of the technicality in this song felt overdone, without really adding too much to the strength of the song. Perhaps if I had more time to check out this song and let it grow on me, I would enjoy it more, but in the short time I had to listen to the song, it didn't. You won't get any points this round, sorry bro.

7th Place
Participant: Ravenheart
Artist/Song: Depeche Mode - John the Revelator

First off, your song didn't fit the round theme, young man. It doesn't have a 7 in the duration, but I decided not to give you any point reduction for that, since it doesn't score that high either and because the word 'seven' is sung multiple times throughout the song. Like with Scorpion's song, I wanted to rate this higher, because it's not really a bad song at all, I just got songs I enjoyed more this round, sorry man. 1 point

6th Place
Participant: Xanthul
Artist/Song: Arcade Fire - Wake Up

This is the placement I actually feel the most guilty about, seeing as Xanthul told me this is one of his favourite songs (yeah, I really do read everything you people send me in the e-mails :) ). I actually thought this was a very good song, something I can totally understand people really loving. That dude's voice is lovely and the way he delivers his lyrics really sounds heartfelt. The song definitely would have gotten more points in an open-scored round, but in the way I'm scoring this, I regrettably have to only give it 2 points, despite actually really liking this.

5th Place
Participant: kári
Artist/Song: Massive Attack - Inertia Creeps

Another electronica song, like the one Ravenheart sent, only I liked this one quite a lot better. I have heard of this band a lot and have wanted to check them out after having seen them mentioned on the forums a lot. This song was quite rad, though not really what I had expected of the band, for some reason. It's pretty haunting, especially with the almost whispered vocals and the wacky background noises. A cool song, from a band I will likely check out further. 3 points, + an extra point for the band makes 4 points

4th Place
Participant: Zantera
Artist/Song: Dir en Grey - The Blossoming Beelzebub

The first time I listened to this I was amazed at whatever the hell it was. I don't think I've ever heard anything like this song before, which is a good thing in itself. This is some wacky avant-garde or experimental metal stuff, that really doesn't make too much sense most of the time, especially with the vocals, but the final result is something amazing, something very extraordinary, yet hauntingly beautiful. Holy shit, I will listen to the full album, because I think I'll really like it. 4 points

3rd Place
Participant: ReaperKK
Artist/Song: Across the Delta - The Loop

Wow, this was some amazing alternative rock. They made me think of dredg a bit, mostly of Catch Without Arms and El Cielo and since those are favourites of mine, I was bound to really like this. Awesome guitar work and riffs and an amazing chorus, this song really rocked. I'll check out this album, also after I saw you placed this really high in your album top 50. If the rest of the album resembles anything this song has, it could potentially be an album I would enjoy very much. Awesome song, thanks. 5 points

2nd Place
Participant: Nekov
Artist/Song: Von Hertzen Brothers - Always Been Right

You asshat, always sending me those damn good songs. How will other people even get a chance at winning this way? :P You're only getting those bonus points (see side mission 2) because there actually was a song I liked better than yours, or else this one would have taken the full 7. There's something about this sound, very reminiscent of the song you sent me in the first round (Cutting the Cards by Arena) that I really like. This was some stellar progressive rock from a band that I will check out more from. It didn't exactly blow me away as much as the aforementioned Arena song did, but nevertheless I think you've found me yet another band I like. Checking out their other stuff soon. 6 points, you lucky bastard.

Round Winner!
Participant: MoraWintersoul
Artist/Song: Wolverine - This Cold Heart of Mine

Damn girl, you really nailed it with this one. I think I've found another new band to check out, because this song rocks, a lot. I'm a fan of the guitar work and the dude's voice. If you haven't noticed so far, vocals can really make or break a song for me, but on this they complemented really well with the atmosphere of the song. It's a great metal song, with some very slight progressive influences. Although this was the longest song I got (just clocking in under 8 minutes) it didn't bore more me at all. Awesome, thanks, I'll check this band out, any albums in particular I should start with? 7 points

---

Side Mission 1:
kári's song clearly deals with Inertia (or Sloth) as it's even in the title. For this he'll receive 1 extra point Any other claims I got for the song to be attributed to a sin I couldn't place, so this is the only bonus I'm giving this round. If I have overlooked something - I didn't look up lyrics at all for instance - please tell me and I will rectify this.

Side Mission 2:
I had three people who guessed the correct amount of points and they're all high scoring people! Zantera guessed he'd get 4 points, ReaperKK guessed he'd get 5 points and Nekov pulled in the big one scoring 6 points, as he had guessed. All three people will get 2 extra points.

---

Current Standings:

Nekov: 24+6+2= 32 points
Zantera: 21+4+2= 27 points
MoraWintersoul: 20+7= 27 points
ReaperKK: 19+5+2 = 26 points
kári: 20+3+1+1= 25 points
Ravenheart: 21+1= 22 points
Xanthul: 20+2= 22 points
Scorpion: 19+0= 19 points

Team Standings:

Team Coffee: 32+26+25+19= 102 points
Team Tea: 27+27+22+22= 98 points

Next Round! INSTRUMENTALS

Main Goal:

That's right, as has been announced, an instrumental round. Although I have already received some instrumentals in previous rounds, I want something without vocals from all of you now. If the song contains vocals of ANY kind, even in samples, the song will be awarded with 0 points, no matter how good it is. This is your last chance to score points before the big and epic last round, in which you will be able to send me multiple stuff. Scoring reverts back to normal. Because of this being the last 'formal' round, there are also NO side missions anymore, so you can just focus on sending me an awesome instrumental. As with other all other rounds so far, you may send a song from a band that got the lowest possible score (1 in every round, 0 for Round 7), but now you'll also be able to send anything from a band that got 2 points in a previous round. Good luck once again! :)

Yes, he is one of the best vocalists I know :3 I can recommend you the two latest albums since they don't contain growling and are in general much better than the first two. Especially the one this song comes from - Still, from 2006 - is one of my favorite prog CDs. It's amazing. And like you said, vocals really make it.

Cool you liked Dir En Grey! I think their last two albums are perfect from start to finish, the album the song I sent you is from (Dum Spiro Spero) is perhaps a bit heavier and has more songs with Death Metal-vocals incorporated in the mix, the previous album before that one (Uroboros) is perhaps a bit more experimental/jazz-ish. Some of the songs feels like if King Crimson did metal. Uroboros is my favorite, but Dum Spiro Spero is not far behind.

Will think a bit about what to send for the next round.

Just clearing something up here,

Round 8 is the last round with an actual theme.

After this; Round 9 will be a round in which you can send multiple songs, with a different ranking system in which you can score lots of points.

After Round 9, only the top 3 players will go to the Finals (Round 10).

I have listened to all the stuff I have gotten and it's a very good round, I can tell you that. I will re-listen again tomorrow and shape-up the results and the post.

JUST A FEW MORE HOURS.

Thanks for your patience :)

Post by: Elite on November 23, 2012, 02:02:09 PM
Wow! First off, I'm sorry for the delay I have caused. This week was ridiculously busy for me and I haven't been home very often. The times I was home I was either busy doing stuff or sleeping, so that's mainly what caused the setback. Of course I want to move this forward as well, so here I will bring you the results of this very remarkable round. This round was dominated by two different artists, as you can see in the results. This was a very good round and for that I thank you all.

RESULTS:

Last Place:
Participant: MoraWintersoul
Artist/Song: Nox Arcana - Frozen Memories

I had the feeling when this song started that it could become something very nice, but I was fooled. The song could have been very good had it been built up to something more than it did. While I agree that this is some 'wintery' stuff (the song suits your name I suppose :P ), I found it to not be very interesting to listen to at all. Sorry, but 1 point.

2 points grouping
Participant: Scorpion
Artist/Song: Tony MacAlpine - Tears of Sahara

I'm sorry bro, but for this round I was looking for something more than 'just' a guitar solo. While the playing itself is good and while he does have some nice melodies, the whole thing couldn't hold my interest for very long. I'm not really a fan of instrumental guitar music and this is, unfortunately for you, no difference. 2 points.

Participant: Nekov
Artist/Song: Spinetta Jade - Digital Ayatollah

This song is very, very weird and very proggy. I do like it, but I feel like I got stuff that was better. It's entertaining, for sure, but it drags too much while staying on the same wacky pattern for too long. Cool stuff though, regardless of that. 2 points.

3 points grouping
Participant: Ravenheart
Artist/Song: Ulver - Tomorrow Never Knows

This was the biggest 'what the hell'-song of this round. Unsettling, industrial and avant-garde are but some of the words that came to mind to describe this song. After a couple of song in a similar vein that you've sent me, I'm still not sure whether to actually like it or just be astonished for a while by all the new sounds (for me) I hear. I'll try out the entire album when I get the time for it, because this song was some seriously cool stuff. 3 points

Participant: Zantera
Artist/Song: Kaki King - Great Round Burn

Kaki King is a name I've seen mentioned far too often for being a formidable artist and as a guitar player myself, it was only a matter of time before I would finally hear some of her stuff, I suppose. Well, here we have it, with an amazing song, very well thought about and with cool melodies and rhythmic patterns. Nice. 3 points for the song and an additional 1 for the artist makes a total of 4 points.

4 points grouping
Participant: ReaperKK
Artist/Song: Kaki King - Can Anyone Who Has Heard This Music Really Be a Bad Person?

Well, what have we here? Another song by Kaki King! Basically the same applies to this one as I've mentioned above, but I liked this one slightly better for being a bit a bit more melodic. The ending is absolutely wonderful. 4 points and again, plus 1, makes 5 points.

Participant: Xanthul
Artist/Song: Mono - Follow the Map

God damn, could a short buildup be any more awesome? Well, yes it can, but this is very, very good. The band starts out with some very simple single-note lines but progressively inserts more instruments and volume in the song. The moment the strings kick in with that awesome melody is great and the way the band expands on that to completely fill a wall of sound is amazing. A new band to check out, very nice. 4 points

Round Winner!
Participant: kári
Artist/Song: Mono - Moonlight

Holy fucking shit. The second Mono song I got this round and I was completely blown away by this. I guess this song really caught me at the right moment. This is what post-rock should sound like. It doesn't get boring, the buildup is amazing and the release is great. This was a great pick for your only over-10-minutes-card (the only one use so far as well!). Awesome song! 5 points, without a doubt.

---

Current Standings:

Nekov: 32+2= 34 points
Zantera: 27+4= 31 points
ReaperKK: 26+5= 31 points
kári: 25+5= 30 points
MoraWintersoul: 27+1= 28 points
Xanthul: 22+4= 26 points
Ravenheart: 22+3= 25 points
Scorpion: 19+2= 21 points

Team Standings:

Team Coffee: 34+31+30+21= 116 points
Team Tea: 31+28+26+25= 110 points

Next Round! COMING SOON (in the next post, because it will be huge!)

I thought it would be a somewhat bad choice, because it's meant to work as background music, but I went against the gut feeling and sent it anyway :) didn't wanna send a prog metal instrumental and those are basically all I know. Glad the roulette is up and running :heart

ROUND 9 RULES

*Please read everything in here so there won't be any miscommunications*

So, this is the final round in which you will all participate. After this round there will be a 10th round, but only the top 3 people will go through. Since this is the last round, I have a special set of rules for this final round and it will allow you all to send me multiple songs. The rules are as follows:

- You will send me a minimum of 3 songs and a maximum of 5 songs.
- The total length of all songs you send me may not exceed 27:00 minutes.
- You may send me up to two songs by the same artist in this round, instead of just one.
- I will rank every single song you send me with a score between 1 (lowest) and 10 (highest).
- The three best ranked songs, divided by 3 is your total score for this round (an average of the scoring).
- You may sacrifice one of the five songs to replace the lowest score you have gotten in a round, but you must specify which song replaces what. This song will be scored between 1 and 5 and will replace the previous score, regardless of whether it's a higher or lower score than you had before. Of course, when you do this, all the rules in that particular round apply once again, apart from the fact that scoring in Round 7 goes from 1-5. This table here shows which player may send which round:

kári: Round 1 or 3 (scored 1 point)
Scorpion: Round 7 (scored 0 points)
Nekov: Round 4 (scored 1 point)
ReaperKK: Round 5 (scored 1 point)
MoraWintersoul: Round 8 (scored 1 point)
Xanthul: Round 2, 4 or 7 (scored 2 points)
Ravenheart: Round 3 (scored 2 points)
Zantera: Round 5 (scored 2 points)

---

Next up; your total score (the average of the 3 best ranked songs, rounded to the nearest decimal) are the points you will always get, no matter what. However, there's an additional way to gain points, and we'll do this with a wager system. The following rules apply:

- You must sign one of the five 'contracts' outlined below.
- You must wager at least 5 points and a maximum of your total score.
- You must send you choice of contract to me by PM or e-mail, this may not be seen by other participants.

Contract A:
- The average score of the songs I send will be 5,8 or higher.
- I will wager X points to ensure this happens
- If this happens, I will gain X points times 0,5
- If this doesn't happen, I will lose X points

Contract B:
- The average score of the songs I send will be 6,4 or higher.
- I will wager X points to ensure this happens
- If this happens, I will gain X points times 0,7
- If this doesn't happen, I will lose X points

Contract C:
- The average score of the songs I send will be 7,2 or higher.
- I will wager X points to ensure this happens
- If this happens, I will gain X points
- If this doesn't happen, I will lose X points

Contract D:
- The average score of the songs I send will be 7,7 or higher.
- I will wager X points to ensure this happens
- If this happens, I will gain X points times 1,3
- If this doesn't happen, I will lose X points

Contract E:
- The average score of the songs I send will be 8,4 or higher.
- I will wager X points to ensure this happens
- If this happens, I will gain X points times 1,7
- If this doesn't happen, I will lose X points

---

I realise they may seem very difficult, but I'm sure you people are smart enough to figure out what's the best option for you. This is a game of confidence and of knowing what I will like and what I won't. Take your time to choose the songs you send me, whether you want to replace a song earlier in the roulette at the cost of losing an option for the five songs.

As an example, here's a possibility for 'Player Y':

Player Y has 24 points.
Player Y scored 1 point in a round.
He/She sends me five songs:
- Song 1 (4 minutes long)
- Song 2 (3 minutes long)
- Song 3 (10 minutes long)
- Song 4 (6 minutes long)
- Song 5 (4 minutes long, replacement for his score in a previous round)
Total running time: 27 minutes, so it's just okay.

He goes by Contract D, wagering 16 points

I score them as follows:
- Song 1 (7)
- Song 2 (6)
- Song 3 (9)
- Song 4 (8)
- Song 5 (3)

Player Y wins 2 points on Song 5.
The best songs get ranked an average ((7+9+8)/3)=8, so he gains 8 points.
He fulfilled Contract D, meaning he'll get 16*1,3= 23,4 points.

Player Y's total score amounts 24+2+8+23,4= 57,4

---

If there are any questions or things you don't understand, please ask me as I will gladly answer them!

Good luck people! :D

That sounds both awesome and pretty complicated to keep track of, so I definitely won't do something like this in my roulette. :lol

Also, what if I believe that my songs will score less than 5.8 points on average?
Title: Re: Elite's Roulette - Round 9!

That is not an option, you must choose one of the 5 contracts :P

Got it :tup

Also, please take into account that due to the sheer size of this round, it will take some time for me to listen to everything and rank them. As always, I'll only start listening after I have received everything, so that no songs get the (dis)advantage of being heard more often.

TL:DR... boy I'm sure glad I'm not in this roulette.  Not a shot, just that this is appears way too complex for me

I was hoping it's not too difficult, there's just a lot of things I had to explain there. Basically it's 'send me 3-5 songs, of which one may be a replacement of your lowest score, the total time limit not exceeding 27 minutes. I score the best three and average them. You wager points to a system of choice, allowing you to have some kind of influence on your wager'

Well, this is Steven Wilson's solo band I have never had the time or taken the time for to check out. It sounds very much Steven Wilsony, and that's partly because of his voice. I really loved the tune, but I found it to be a bit too resembling of what he has done with Porcupine Tree. Nevertheless, as I've been a huge fan of them, I will check this band out further. I'm giving you 4 points plus an extra point for the band, making 5 points. Since you're replacing a current score of 2 points, you have just earned yourself 3 points extra.

---

Participant: kári
Artist/Song: Beach House - Wild

That was nice. The voice is very nice, 'soothing' or whatever, mainly because of the insane amount of echo and reverb that's been thrown on it. Despite the title, this song isn't wild at all. It's very chilled down, laid-back and relaxing. A very nice tune indeed. 3 points and considering you're replacing a score of only one, that means you've earned yourself 2 points.

---

Participant: Scorpion
Artist/Song: Luna Mortis - Embrace the End

Wow, this stuff is good. It's heavy as shit, but it has a female singer, who supposedly does all the growls as well. Some awesome melodic death metal. Back when I used to listen to this kind of stuff more often, I would have liked it even more I suppose. It was good, but it was a bit too show-off-ish in some places, despite being a killer tune. I would give this song 4 points, but since you're replacing this for round 7 and the length doesn't have  a 7 in it (I know, here we go again), I'm giving a 1 point reduction. No worried though, because that still means a free 3 points for having had the lowest score (0) in the whole roulette earlier.

---

Participant: Ravenheart
Artist/Song: Faith and the Muse - Annwyn, Beneath the Waves

I'm unsure what to think of this. On the one hand I think I really like this, but the production is very weird, a bit like My Bloody Valentine's 'Loveless', only different. The drums are more accentuated and the voice sticks out more, but even that makes for unintelligible singing. It's quite compelling though, like most of the gothic-like stuff you've sent so far, but I'm not really a fan of the ambiguity of some of this stuff. 3 points, but since this is replacing an earlier 2, that means you'll only score 1 point for this song.

---

The rest is currently being ranked, as I slowly move through the playlist. Do not expect results before the end of the week though, I have a very busy one ahead..

Bumping this to let you know you haven't been forgotten. I have been listening to the tracks you sent me sporadically, but I've just been so busy the past few weeks that I couldn't have posted results earlier. I'm going to try and get it done before the end of next week, but it's going to be quite some work.

This roulette will be finished before the end of the world 2012. I can assure that :)
I'm actually slowly shaping up the write-ups. Instead of doing it all at once, like I did with the previous rounds, I listen to a quarter of the songs first, rank them and then move on. et., it's getting there, but there's just nothing visible for you guys yet..

Half-Way update!

So, I'm just going to post about half the songs sent now and the rest will follow very soon, but I can assure you I listened to the songs even more than with the previous rounds. So, here's the first 14 songs, but I'm not saying who sent what just yet, partly because I'm not completely sure myself either (I threw everything in playlist to not be biased), partly because I don't want to reveal everything yet. Make that a fun game to guess it or whatever, do with it what you like. I got the following songs:

RESULTS

Artist/Song: Mew - Am I Wry? No
What a very cool song. It reminds me very much of My Bloody Valentine or what they would sound like if the ocals could be heard, or something. I found the first half to be a lot better than the second half of the song and that's mainly because of the outro that drags a bit. Overall though, this song is a very satisfying listen and I'll have to give it 7 points. Also, you're getting an extra point for the band, which won't count towards your round average.

Artist/Song: Blackmill ft. Veela - Let it Be
As if I had always been kept in the dark. How have I never heard this stuff before, always thinking electronic music was repetitive and not renewing? This song is amazing, it's got this ambient vibe with a little bit of dubstep interspersed and it was unlikely anything I had heard before. I really enjoyed this track and I definitely going to check out the rest of the album. 8 points

Artist/Song: Kyte - These Tales of Our Stay
I honestly had to look up whatever genre it was I was hearing and wikipedia isn't really revealing there either. Out of the genres listed, 'dream pop' comes closest to my perception of what I'm hearing. It's a slow moving song, heavily influenced by electronic music and ambient stuff, even a bit post-rock-ish. I did enjoy this, but it wasn't as good as some other similar stuff I have gotten in the overall roulette. 7 points

Artist/Song: Dissona - Nest
If there ever was a weird song, this would be it. This is complete madness and therefore it's amazing. It's a progresisve metal song of the weirdest kind and it incorporates a lot of elements from different music styles. I have no clue what it's supposed to be about, but that chorus is amazing, even though the lyrics seemingly don't make any sense. I'm going to check out the full album of this band, because it's bound to be good. 8 points

Artist/Song: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Up Jumped the Devil
That piano lick makes the song, you know which I mean if you know the song. The song is slow moving, almost dawdling, but it's groovy as fuck and it makes for a very awesome song, an experience almost from start to finish. I love how the singer increases the intensity of his voice with every verse as the song gets heavier gradually. Amazing stuff. 8 points

Artist/Song: Moon Safari - Heartland
Awesome progressive rock, that's it. Really, I could write an in-depth review about the song's structure and progression, but it's not really necessary, this song is just killer from front to back, with nothing major to complain about at all. It has all the ingredients to be a great song and the execution is almost flawless. 9 points

Artist/Song: Judas Priest - Beyond the Realms of Death
Wow, this song did almost nothing to me. The opening is cheesy and the guitar lead over that is horrendously bad. When the vocals kick in it gets slightly better and the chorus is actually pretty good, but I'm not a fan of that vocal style at all and going back to that bad verse is a chore after chorus, so luckily the song goes to a guitar solo after the second one, shich is actually pretty decent. I'm giving this 4 points; the chorus, but mainly the guitar solo at the end kind of saved the song, but I wouldn't listen to it again.

Artist/Song: Extreme - Midnight Express
This is some very relaxing stuff, with amazing acoustic guitar work. That guitarist is a beast, but he's not all for the show-off, because it's him that makes the song and he does it effortlessly, laying line after line, melody after melody while going all-out every once in a while. Awesome instrumental stuff, I really enjoyed that, 8 points.

Artist/Song: The Smashing Pumpkins - Thru the Eyes of Ruby
I knew exactly one Smashing Pumpkins song before hearing this one and I always wondered why the hell people would put the album this song came from in their top 50s, for the song I heard before I didn't find that special at all. I can see now why people would like them, because this is definitely different from other stuff, but it just doesn't appeal to me. I think it's his voice, mainly. 5 points

Artist/Song: Incubus - Redefine
I had heard of the band before, but never knew they made this kind of alternative metal. I enjoyed this song and it has quite some inventive stuff thrown in, with expeditions to funk-metal-ish stuff and the scratching is the chorus, which is the best part of the song hands now. Nice stuff, but nothing overwhelmingly brilliant. 6 points

Artist/Song: Cradle of Filth - The Forest Whispers My Name
Another band I had heard of but never bothered to check out, mainly because of their name and their reputation within the music scene. I just never thought it would be my thing in any way. Well, that does actually turn out to be the case, but it's not as black & white as that. I'm not a fan of the vocals; they're too extreme for me, especially when they're just wordless screams, like there are in this song. The music however I think is very good and considering this was a song on their first album, I may like to check out some later albums if they're any better. For now, I'm giving this one 6 points.

Artist/Song: Aghora - Anugraha
The award for strangest band name and song combination easily goes to this one. I don't even know what it means, but as the song doesn't really have lyrics (I don't count wordless wailing as lyrics) I suppose it doesn't really matter. This song is pretty rhythmic, enforced by the drums at all times, over which strange bass-guitar, guitar and sitar patterns are played, with a woman singing wordlessly over them (think Great Gig in the Sky, only the woman there is much better). What makes this song good is the music over which she sings. Although pretty much the whole song is in 4/4 meter, it sounds like you're listening to something infinitely more complex and a quick listen to all the instrumental layers and harmonies soon learns that the underlying structure is indeed pretty difficult to grasp. I have yet to listen to more of their stuff, but i will do this, it'll be interesting to see what the rest of it sounds like. 8 points

Artist/Song: Mew - Comforting Sounds
The second Mew song I received is much longer than the first and where I didn't like the extension of 'Am I Wry? No', here the band takes a completely different approach in the overall songwriting, starting off much slower and with less intensity. The song is constructed like a post-rock song would be, gradually building up to end in a massive and amazing wall of sound. I liked this one better than the other Mew song, but cnsidering they're on the same album anyway, I'm going to hear both more often, because I will be checking them out. 8 points and like with the other one, an extra point for the band.

Artist/Song: Lunatic Soul - Wanderings
So, I just looked up this band and found out it's actually a solo project by Mariusz Duda, the bassist/singer from Riverside, a band I love. Knowing that now makes me feel kind of stupid that I didn't recognise his voice, but ah well. The song starts off with a recurring keyboard motif, that keeps on going throughout the whole song, while the intensity and instruments used increases with every minute. The best part of the sng is the singer, who's powerful on this track, but the underlying music sets the stage really well for this song. Not what I would have expected from the Riverside man (yes, it's really different), but a good track nonetheless. 7 points

More soon!

I get it :)

Just a thought before I finish writing out everything and posting the stuff tonight; do you guys even want a 10th round? I was thinking; this roulette has to be the slowest moving one already and this last round was huge, so a tenth round isn't really going to add that much. I'm saying this from a completely neutral point of view; I don't have the second results yet and I don't know who sent what en what their contracts were while listening through the songs, so I have no clue who's winning this at the moment.

Please reply with a 'yes' or a 'no' regarding there being a tenth round. If half of you say no, this Roulette will be over tonight.

First... it hasn't been the absolute slowest - Sigz gets that honor, and I think he's purposefully not finishing it on principle.  Second, 9 rounds (with this one being pretty huge and you getting a lot of songs) ought to be enough.  I'm sure the next players on the list would like their chance.

Post by: Elite on December 22, 2012, 04:48:19 PM
Do you have any idea how long this took me? :lol

Over 2 months after starting this roulette I finally conclude it with this single post. It's been one hell of a ride during a very busy time for me. You guys have been amazingly patient and great participants. I set myself a time limit for rounds in the first post and I think I only fulfilled ONE of them, while (almost) all of you got their songs in on time. And what an amazing songs you've sent me! I have lots of great stuff to check out and already some of your submissions have been translated to CD's in my rack and there's probably more to come. Thanks everybody for your participation, this last round especially was really tough for me. Lots of good stuff was sent, but also some stuff I didn't really enjoy. The most 'interesting' part of it was the contract choosing; some of you made the right choice, but there's some unfortunately errors here and there where you could have scored more points. Initially I wanted to do a last round with the top 2 scorers on the winning team and the top scorer on the losing team, but it's been long enough already. Besides, the results are quite compelling and there's no way how I could make my idea for this last round work. The whole 'Team Coffee' vs. 'Team Tea' thing didn't turn out as I wanted to it to be. Perhaps for my next roulette (when the time comes in another two years) I'll see if I can set up a real team game, because here my idea didn't really work. It's been a blast, thanks (once again) for joing in on this and being the awesome people that you are. For now; enjoy the results and until next time.

Final Standings before the full last round (including extra points for bands in first half of round 9):

Nekov: 34 points
kári: 30+2+1= 33 points
Zantera: 31+1 =32 points
ReaperKK: 31 points
Xanthul: 26+3+1= 30 points
MoraWintersoul: 28 points
Ravenheart: 25+1= 26 points
Scorpion: 21+3= 24 points

So now, RESULTS! (in alphabetic order)

Participant: kári

Artist - Song: Kyte - These Tales of Our Stay
Score: 7/10
Artist - Song: Mew - Comforting Sounds
Score: 8/10

Artist - Song: Talk Talk - I Believe in You
This is alright, but nothing more than that. I liked the song, but it's a bit too bland for me, since it doesn't really go anywhere. It's ambient, but without direction and that's the problem with some post-rock; if it doesn't go anywhere it's basically not good. 5/10

Artist - Song: This Will Destroy You - Threads
You do know how to send awesome post-rock, don't you? This song is just your typical post-rock stuff with not really anything special, but it works for me. The only thing about it is that it's not the best post-rock song I have received in my roulette, let alone in this round. 7/10

Total score: (8+7+7)/3= 7,3

Contract C with 30 points
Required score: 7,2
Contract FULFILLED, gaining 30 points

Total amount of points: 7,3 + 30 = 37,3 points

Participant: MoraWintersoul

Artist - Song: Dissona - Nest

Artist - Song: Lunatic Soul - Wanderings

Artist - Song: Frequency Drift - Dead
I've seen these people live at Night of the Prog last summer and like the whole male audience I was amazed at their female singer. The band put on a great show and I recognise this song from their setlist. It's unfortunate the band could capture the same atmosphere in the studio recording (which I hadn't heard up to this point). I enjoyed the band live, but the studio version sounds a bit lacking, unfortunately. Still a good song though, but I can't help but feel it could have been better. 6/10

Artist - Song: Chroma Key - On The Page
You said this was (one of) your favourite song(s) and I have to agree that this is absolutely mind-blowingly beautiful. From the frantic piano intro towards the wonderfully constructed verse, Kevin Moore delivers this whole song with a passion that I've from him for years. This man is too underrated for words. 8/10
Total score: (8+8+7)/3= 7,7

Contract B with 6 points
Required score: 6,4
Contract FULFILLED, gaining 4,2 points

Total amount of points: 7,7 + 4,2 = 13,9 points

Artist - Song: Iluvatar - In the Eye
HOLY FUCKING SHIT. You said that this was your secret weapon and I am glad that you sent this. I'm a complete sucker for this kind of stuff and you knew it. From front to back, this is an amazing progressive metal song. How do I get the album this song came from? I want it now. 9,5/10. Seriously, it's that good.

Artist - Song: Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays - Ozark
This is just a completely random piano improvisation meant to show off one's incredible skill. Yeah, the piano player is good, but in this song he shows that he can't really build up a piece or make sense out of the billion notes he plays. I'm not too fond of random instrument wankery and this song is no exception. 4/10

Artist - Song: Moonspell - Mephisto
Where your first song was awesome in its moderation, this song really fails to capture any mood for me. It's heavy indeed, but the choruses just sound so silly and the vocals are way too harsh for what the song is tryig to accomplish, I believe. The composition is pretty alright, but it's nothing special. In some way the song is quite compelling though and it does keep your attention very well. Repeatedly listen made me appreciate it more, but it has yet to make a real impression on me. 5/10.

Artist - Song: My Dying Bride - The Songless Bird
The same thing applies to this song, only here it's a lot worse. I'm not one to dismiss music easily, but this one didn't do anything to me. The vocals are bad and the mixing is terrible and doesn't really make any sense. The guitar riffs I didn't like and overall it felt like the band was trying to be heavy, but in my opinion they failed. Would not listen again, 3/10.

Artist - Song: Michael Kelsey - The Free Spirit
This man is an incredible acoustic guitar player, but for some reason he fails to keep my interest for very long. It's like he's dragging out his music to such an extent that it becomes meaningless at some point (if that makes any sense whatsoever). It's not bad at all though, just a bit too long for what it is. 6/10

Artist - Song: The Jezabels - Dark Storm
The singer is absolutely adorable and she makes the song, which in itself is pretty good as well. The verses are okay, but the chorus is absolutely gorgeous and the end is amazing. Is the rest of their stuff anything like this? Because I will be checking this out, another band to go on my ever-growing list. Thanks! 8/10

Artist - Song: Mogwai - Yes! I Am A Long Way From Home
I was expected more from an name I've seen more often. This was pretty much the most bland post-rock song I recieved, apart from the outburst at the end, which I didn't like for the horrible guitar sound. The voices in the beginning and at the end didn't really help in me enjoying this song, I felt like it would be better without them there. 5/10

Artist - Song: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Gates to the Garden
This song is really laid-back and to make that work, it will have to grab your attention. This song, like the other song by the same artist I received does this effortlessly. However, the other song I like slightly better, mainly for the groove that one had. All in all, this is not a bad song at all and I really did enjoy it. 7/10

Artist - Song: Queens of the Stone Age - God Is on the Radio
I'm not really a fan of QOTSA when I tried them in the past and this song shows that to me once again. I didn't really find it interesting to listen to at all, it's repetitive, I'm not a fan of the vocal style, because they seem way too monotonous for me and the riffs aren't all that great. This has basically confirmed me not liking QOTSA, what a shame. 4/10

Artist - Song: Bon Iver - Skinny Love
Bon Iver is another artist I've heard more of, both on the forums and outside of them, but I never tried them out, because I didn't feel like they were for me. I have some problems with voice still, but overall this is a fine song. I might try them out more in the future, after I'm done with all the other stuff I got in this roulette. 6/10

Artist - Song: God is an Astronaut - Shadows
This is the best post-rock song I received all roulette and that's not an exaggeration. This song gets really intense in a short amount of time and I really like that. It starts out with a great drum groove backed by a guitar line, before completely exploding into post-rocky goodness. What makes this song very different from most other post-rock tunes is its non-linear build-up and its tempo; the intense sections are fast. Very, very good and a blast to listen to. I will enjoy this band more when I check out the rest of their stuff. 9/10

Artist - Song: Polkadot Cadaver - Forever and A Day
The song is really weird, but in a good way. I can't really put my finger on the genre of this song, but I think something 'progressive' or 'alternative' would do. The chorus is easily one of the better parts of the song, though the overall thing is pretty amazing in itself, with some unexpected instrumentation and quirky stuff. I have to hear more from these people. 8/10

Artist - Song: Pendulum - Watercolour
My roommate two years ago used to listen to drum 'n bass all the time and it drove me crazy. This is unlike anything he ever played though and might well be the best drum 'n bass stuff I've ever heard. That still isn't saying much though, because this song hasn't yet turned me on to the genre, but it has sparked my interest in checking this band out more. Nice! 7/10

So close! :getoffmylawn:

Anyway, it was a fun roulette all in all with great people. As far as getting that Iluvatar CD it totally beats me, it's from somewhere in the 90's and they were never big so good luck with that

Congrats Kari

Great roulette :) I had tons of fun. And if Nekov had picked a better contract he would have won :) Song wise he is the real winner!

That's it mainly, yes. Your contract choice along with the amount of points bet mattered a lot in the scoring, as you can see. I actually kind of wanted Nekov to win because of his songs overall, but especially in the last round and he could have if he chose C or higher.

Well, it's all a game eh?

Of course. The main point is you now have some new music to indulge yourself in. :)

Surprised you don't like Talk Talk though. Keep in mind the song is from 1988 from the album Spirit of Eden which is considered by many as the album that created post rock or something... :)

Also I strongly disagree with "if it doesn't go anywhere it's basically not good" but oh well :)

I was a bit harsh with that statement and I don't necessarily always agree with it myself. It's just when ou have to write out that much text about that many different songs stuff like this slips in unnoticed :P

Great roulette, would play again.

thanks! :tup

I can see why some people would think that though :) I just don't.
