i think it looks bigger due to it being tall. If all those cymbals and octobans were where Portnoy had them ( or where most normal drummers do ) - it would look less massive.
Also - despite what Mangini says - you do NOT need four bass drums on a kit. That's just nonsense. I don't care if one is a bigger " boom " than the others - A boom is a boom. Him saying playing X song with two bass drums cant be done is like...reallly? You physically cant play X song with ONLY two bass drums ? O...k.....
I may be in a shitty mood right now - but I bet there's a few things on that kit he doesn't even need.

However in a live setting, the differences between the kick drums will be heard by absolutely nobody. In the studio? Sure if you want. But live it makes no difference in the slightest.

Especially when you add in gating / compression and natural reverb in an auditorium over the PA. Everything being super loud and all that . A bass drum will sound like a bass drum.

This is where I disagree. I just don't think Mangini cares or understands that the kick drums aren't necessary live. He seems to think about things from a strictly academic perspective, and from that perspective the kick drums make a difference.

One of my biggest problems with my music degree was after a while - your natural creativity is over written with theory knowledge and you can only think in terms of scales and modes and intervals.
It just stops you thinking creatively imo and forces you to write / play in a robotic, trained way which I try to avoid.

I went to Dream Theater's Dramaticorner (the #dramaticevents tag on Instagram/hipstagram) and I thought I'd be saving a few pictures off it, but in the end I got 35ish and put them in 4 different sets on tumblr :biggrin: They sum up the tour quite well. I just have to say, even though I didn't see them on this tour, I feel really attached to it in a way, because, ever since January, my enthusiasm for DT saw a complete rebirth, and I never thought that would happen; and registering here was quite good for my mental health too. This was the first DT tour that I really "followed through", despite being their fan for three years before it, and it was something nice to do. I'll always associate this stage, these poses and events (dramativents!) to this incredibly complex and happy period of my life. Just seeing them makes my heart skip a beat.

I have to say that we might be looking at the best JP picture of all time. Everything that is JP is on that picture, his royal coolness especially highlighted, minus a guitar of course... which is on, like, EVERY OTHER PICTURE TAKEN. One of the perks of DT using publicly licensed clip art for their album cover, is that now I can find the same art on other things, and have a Dream Theater phone legally without having to pay extra for a DT licenced product. (though, I would certainly pay top dollar for an officially licensed product like this if it was available...but hey...save a few bucks)

Indeed, although he broke his rule at the very end of Score where he couldn't resist to throw one out to a guy who was air drumming all the way through. Such a great, pivotal moment with the music and JLB's expressions...I must've watched it a dozen times over.

I don't think it's making fun of as much as stating a fact, actually a lot of guys with long hair can be mistaken for a woman at first sight(young Myung being the other example that comes to mind). I don't think it's a bad thing though, it's just a (western)cultural thing to be used to women having long hair and men short, so when you see someone with long hair you are somehow conditioned to think it's a woman or a man that looks like one. I would say it's almost inevitable depending on where you grew and a number of factors. It kind of sucks but hey, I didn't create the world or its (stupid)rules :lol.
I still wouldn't say he is that good looking but what do I know anyway :lol.

I took this picture myself at the Heineken Music Hall concert on 2014-17-02, needless to say.. it was friggin' awesome!!!
Also had the most extraordinary thing happen to me, I was sitting in Amsterdam drinking a beer at a cafe outside, and Jordan Rudess just passed me at 3 feet distance.
So naturally I couldn't let him pass, so we talked for like 5 minutes, he's a really nice guy!
