Discussion of the show, special treats for the dvd, setlist etc.

Night 1 - Same setlist as every other show this tour.
Night 2 - Same setlist with 2-3 different songs.

I think there'll be more than 2-3 songs changed for the second night. I think we'll see one or two serious surprises too. After all, JLB said it was going to be 'stellar'.

Yes, so they'll have to change more than 2-3 just for the ADTOE songs, let alone the songs from other albums. From ADTOE, I believe the only songs they have played at EVERY show on the tour are OTBOA and BITS. I would expect that they will play those two both nights, and rotate the other 7 songs (3 on one night; 4 on the other). Not sure what they'll do for the others. We know they aren't playing TCOT. Removing that from the list, and removing songs that were only one-off's, they have played 24 non-ADTOE songs since the tour began. That's a lot of material to choose from. There's no way they can play it all, but if we got 12-15 of those, we're looking at a pretty diverse, and pretty long DVD.

James clarified that both shows are to be filmed. I always took this as if it meant that both shows are to be fully released. Is this confirmed or is it just wishful thinking? I really hope they don't do a mashup of the two performances...

They will likely do a mashup because I doubt they will play two completely independent sets over both nights. But after saying that, I think we will get 2-3 songs that are similar (BITS, OTBOA, etc).

Given the logistics of practicing and playing songs for a video release, and given what DT have a history of doing in that regard, it makes sense to me that the set lists will probably be based in large part on what they have been playing for this recent leg of the tour. They've been playing about 14-15 songs per set. Figure 2-3 duplicates from the ADTOE songs. Maybe 3-4 duplicates of non-ADTOE songs. That leaves 7-10 songs per set that would be swapped, which I believe is a very high number--probably too high. But if that estimate is correct, that would mean a total of anywhere from 21 to 25 different songs for a DVD. That's a lot of songs.

I undestand your point, and you are totally right, but I wouldn't mind having some repeats just for the sake of keeping the two performances separate. I would really like to feel the flowing of the concert, from the very beginning to the end, as in LAB and Score, and not being seemingless teleported from one night to the other when a certain songs comes to its conclusion. I don't know if I made my point clear...

Yeah, it's not like it's unprecedented. But it's not the norm either. I guess I wouldn't be shocked if they just released both nights in their intirety. I just see that as the least likely scenario.

Sure, but it's more likely that they will be eventually released as part of other key performances than as outtakes of the DVD shooting. It's not they have not ever done that (OYALT outtakes were released as an IFC release), but I think it's an extremely unlikely possibility.

We know they aren't playing TCOT.
Sorry, but I've been kind of out of the loop lately regarding DT. Was there confirmation that TCOT will not be played at this show, or are we just assuming based on the fact that it hasn't been in the setlist for quite awhile? I would be very disappointed if some BC&SL songs aren't on the DVD.

I'm expecting and willl be content with formulating these two nights to include every song they played on all Dramatic Tour legs. The 3 or 4 set lists.

I dislike this too. Billy Talent's 666 Deluxe Live DVD/CD had two DVDs, with almost identical setlists, with one extra song added in the second (the CD is the same show as the 2nd DVD). Although that is excusable as they only had three albums out at the time, and they only played songs from the two BT albums and not Watoosh!.

IMO:
A Nightmare to Remember - Unlikely.
A Rite of Passage - Unlikely.
Wither - More likely than the first two, but still unlikely.
The Shattered Fortress - No.
The Best of Times - No.
The Count of Tuscany - Already been said that it won't be played, which is unfortunate because it's the clear stand out on the album.
Any other views?

I'm sure Wither will be played because I doubt DT are dumb enough to ignore the entirety of their second to last album especially when it never got a DVD release.

I'm hoping two tracks will be from BC&SL. TSF, TBoT, and TCoT won't be played. If two tracks are being played, I'm betting on Wither and ARoP.

Wither is the only song that has a real chance of being played and that chance is virtually non-existent anyway.

Not sure why James said it's an outdoor venue but it's not so it will be dark and will have artificial illumination.

So how come Luna Park isn't an outdoor venue? James said they performed there plenty of times, he might have got some venues mixed up.
And I have no idea why the hell would they care about Black clouds and silver linings when they're promoting A Dramatic turn of events. The only song off the album they've played on tour with Mangini is The Count of Tuscany, and even that was performed only on last year's summer leg before the new album came out, and it was already confirmed it won't be played due to being too long. I seriously doubt they would learn a song from BC&SL for their last leg on this tour just so they could release it on a DVD. We'll get one of those songs on one of the future releases, I can see Wither being in the standard rotation on the next tour, so that's a possibility for the next DVD along with The Count. ANTR won't be played because of Mike's vocals, AROP isn't really needed on a DVD, and it goes without saying that we will never see the remaining two songs off the album in concert.

4 nights to be precise but let's give him a break, he has probably performed in over 100 arenas. I doubt he can remember them all.

To reiterate what I said in another thread a few weeks back, on all of the band's officialy released DVDs (not counting the Ytsejam releases or live CDs), you know how many live versions of Metropolis we have gotten with just the five band members playing it? Zero. That's right. Zero. The Score version had the orchestra and the version of 5 Years... cuts the ending off. So, I'd say a live version of a full Metropolis with just the five is loooooooooong overdue on an officially released live DVD.

i hope they don't ignore BCSL. Even without MP, they already played a song from the 12 steps suite, they already released 19-minute long songs in a DVD (even longer than that), they already played ANTR without MP on vocals while auditioning, and nothing stops them from playing Wither or AROP.
The only song they're unlikely to play is my favorite, The Best of Times, but at this point I just want live footage of BCSL songs that wasn't taken from Summer Sonic.

AROP is lame, I really hope they don't bring that up. I'd like either Nightmare or Tuscany from that record, it makes the most sense. I think Petrucci can do the "ROOOOOOOOOOOOOO" part just well (As a matter of fact, I always liked his rough voice more than MP's, with The Glass Prison as an example).

Even AROP would be great for the sake of avoiding the possibility of BCSL turning into the new Space-Dye Vest. It's a little better when played live.
And I honestly think that JLB can pull of rough vocals perfectly well, and he could always bring back one of the softer arrangements they suggested when they were writing the song.

This is a possibility. It's just like playing the demo versions of Hollow years or Lines in the sand, which they have busted out on some tours.

I really want to see To Live Forever, a song or two from FII, and The Glass Prison on the DVD. After that, as long as they pull out some old songs that Mangini hasn't played yet, I'll be happy. I want to see them play a fewer of the older songs Mangini hasn't played yet instead of playing the same tunes from the past few North American and European tours. I understand the bulk of the setlist will be of songs they have already played, but that shouldn't stop them from one or two never-before-played (by Mangini) tunes.

I really didn't like neither Akerfeldt's live take on that in Progressive Nation, nor the demo where MP tried cookie monster vocals/imitating Akerfeldt. As much as I love Wildoer on Static Impulse, I don't think he would make it better somehow.

It makes sense to have solo spots on the DVD. They're playing two nights, so there is definitely space. Plus, John and Jordan have had solo spots all tour, and Mike did before this last U.S. leg as well. While I'm not a fan of drum solos, it makes perfect sense to have one for Mike on this DVD. I just hope we get good camera angles and not a lot of fast cutaways. I want to be able to actually see what he is doing.

Its more in the vein of MM's drum solo and then the JR/JP solo spots they have been doing over the past few tours. Nothing new and certainly nothing wankery-comparable. :lol

What amused me about the 5 years / LiT commentary is the fact that the videos were shot a long time ago so there was a huge load of laughing about their clothes and youthful behavior and stuff like that :D Also, since the JLB link was posted, this thread is now about estrogen.

No TCOT isn't good... but I really really hope for return of The Great Debate at least... it isn't on any DVD yet (no I don't count performance from Score bonus tracks because it isn't as good as it could be at all). After all they stopped playing it only because they wanted to play both Outcry and Breaking All Illusions every night and now with two nights for DVD there's some possiblity they will bring it back.

I disagree, I think JP is gonna take great interest in the production of this DVD and we'll get a lot of cool stuff, equal if not better than Budokhan and LSFNY.
To answer your question there was no commentary on Budokhan. I wasn't thinking of a commentary on this new DVD and frankly wouldn't care if it didn't have one as long as they have a cool documentary detailing the Dramatic Tour life and times :lol I wanna hear about the cubes, how the idea came up and how it developed.

I would really like that, watching this song live was a great experience and i think Mangini does a great job playing this tune, but unfortunately it seems a little unlikely, i think JP said that this song didn't have much appeal to the fans.

I think its a bit irresponsible to say its 'never' going to happen without MP. We've never had a DVD released before without MP, so anything is possible.
Also, a bonus documentary about ADTOE or maybe the new lineup on tour would be sweet. Jordan could have easily put something like that together.

That's the exact DVD that I was referencing actually, Van Halen's "Live: Right Here, Right Now". One second Eddie Van Halen has a yellow shirt on, two seconds later he's wearing a purple shirt. It's extremely distracting, and I would hate to see DT go that route.
What would REALLY be awesome is if we got 2 completely different set lists for both nights, thus resulting in a 4-hour DVD/Blu-ray. :metal

That's the best cause scenario for the DVD, for sure.

I assumed that simply because, in these audio commentaries, it was usually a DVD produced by Portnoy (2 out of 3), he was usually the guy to bring up interesting trivia points with JP and JLB coming in from time to time etc.
In many other cases, I happily claim that anything is possible because we're not entirely sure what the other members want to do. In this case, with audio commentaries, it just seems to me like something that only MP would care about. He just seems like the kind of guy who would happily sit down, watch a video and talk about it forever.
I don't know, it's just a hunch.
Also, I'm talking about audio commentaries only. Not any other sort of bonus material.

Actually the first confirmation was when JP told me after the LA show at the beginning of July. Regarding TGD, I think you can pretty much write that one off as well, as when I talked with JP back in December about why they dropped that track, his response was that it is a great album track but wasn't getting much of a response from the audience. So I can't imagine them resurrecting it for these shows. That said, I did encourage JP to seriously consider releasing one of the shows from the summer European leg as an official bootleg, as it has TCoT, TGD and some of the other songs I doubt will be featured at the shows in Argentina - hopefully it will happen.
As for what DT will do with these 2 shows (release them completely, create a 2 set "show" from them, mix the songs together to create an extra long show), I haven't the foggiest idea. But I wouldn't completely write off the idea of them releasing both shows in their entirety. I do think it's possible, especially if most of the set is different from night to night.
While the precident the band has set is only to swap out a maximum of 4 or 5 songs between shows, my gut feeling is that we'll see more songs switched out between the 2 nights, and that they will be hybrids of the setlists we've been seeing since the first American leg of the tour. Below is my initial guess at what they might do. Again, the sets may vary more than what they end up doing (likely so), but I would expect the majority of the older songs listed below to be played one of the two nights.

But both of those are tracks where I think an audience just wants to watch and take them in, and they have grooves that are hard to "rock out" to from an audience perspective. I think he's mistaking that for audience apathy, but it's not.

I still disagree with this. Why does it need to be represented? I would rather they play what they are excited about playing rather than go through the motions playing a song just because they need to fill up a spot with a BC&SL song. They will likely pull songs from that out on future tours, so even if doesn't get represented this time around, it probably will eventually.

However, Learning to Live was the minority of its original album. As far as I see it, people simply want some representation of Black Clouds, and TCOT is the ideal song for that, because putting aside the fact that it's a fantastic song instrumentally, it's also the most fitting - there's nothing in this song that they can't play or sing without MP like the first track, it's not too personal for MP like the 4th and 5th tracks, and it wasn't represented in Summer Sonic like the 2nd and 3rd tracks.

I get that, but the band obviously likes the looks of the set lists they have been doing this year, and including The Count of Tuscany would mean taking out 2-3 songs. Granted, with two nights, it would be easy to say, "Well, they can play The Count one night and those other 2-3 songs the other night," but again, if the band isn't keen on playing it, do you really want to see a performance of it where the band is going through the motions? A comparison I would make would be The Ministry of Lost Souls on Chaos in Motion. I am not sure who looks more bored out of their minds during that song: the band or the crowd. And playing a nearly 20-minute song like The Count that probably isn't a live favorite could be a total killjoy in an otherwise high energy concert.

But then once the video came out, John said that the delay with the video was mainly because of the production company and the idea of making it into a bigger and more formal production than they had originally envisioned.

Oh, absolutely. And my post wasn't meant to be a criticism, but just to point out that we may have to wait a bit longer than people might like. But the flipside of that is that even if we have to wait awhile, the wait should be well worth it if the TSCO documentary is any indication.

That seems to suggest that they got started on the drummer documentary aspect later that expected (most likely after MM was already picked to replace Portnoy). Since they know they are filming and editing a concert DVD, it shouldn't take as long because they know what they are doing right out of the gate. Also, there will be no need to put together a soundtrack or anything like that (unless it happens to be a part of any special features). This DVD should be rather straight forward compared to the drummer documentary.

Do you guys actually think it's feasible we'd see SDV? Let's not get any "I like the song"/"I dislike the song" comments this time, it could just be awesome from the standpoint of them starting a new phase in their career (well, that's been going on for quite a while now, but now it's being recorded) - one of the constants of DT was that they'd never play that song, so this phoenix rising from the ashes (because a lot of people were predicting they're screwed without MP) might throw that out of the window. Not to mention that's an awesome musical middle finger.

Perfectly feasible! Mike Portnoy was much more caught up in the mythology of it all than the other guys. Of the current lineup - James and Jordan have already played it together, Mike Mangini's the new guy and he won't have any objections if the other four are cool with it, John Myung... I can't imagine being particularly against it, so I imagine that John Petrucci would have the deciding vote. Setlists are a lot more collaborative than they used to be. If they wanted to play Space Dye Vest, they'd play Space Dye Vest.
Doesn't mean I think it's likely, per se, but definitely plausible. If they wanted to make the night especially special, I don't think they see any taboo in the same way Mike Portnoy did. I don't think they'd ever start putting it in regular rotation, but no worries bringing it out for a special occasion. Don't know if this is necessarily that occasion, though.

Who knows, you might end up getting way more than what you were hoping for... I'm just letting my mind running loose, but we know that they have To Live Forever reharsed. What if they had Don't Look Past Me too? A revamp of the two rarely (if ever) played leftover from Images. I'm not saying that it's likely, but only that it's a remote possibility that I believe you would appreciate more than SDV (surprise factor!)

I really, really love that we've all sort of mutually decided that Score was the last official DVD. "We've all" including James LaBrie. I like Chaos in Motion! Fun DVD, good songs, basically well performed. Wish I could disagree. But man. How good should it have been?
I reckon they'll have room for a couple more songs than that, though, Mladen! Chuck in the full acoustic break for starters. The Silent Man and Beneath the Surface are mandatory. But great choices, by and large.

Believe it or not, I actually wrote latest official concert DVDs, but I edited my post a couple of times before I posted it, and somehow I cut the word concert out. I also love Chaos in motion, it really is a lot of fun. But it's obviously not a concert DVD, it counts more like a compilation.

What time is it all likely to kick off? Get the feeling it'll be fairly late, but I'll happily pick up a coffee or two and watch the songs roll out in realtime. I might even keep a playlist as I go. Start five minutes after Bridges in the Sky starts, and keep adding songs to it as they're reported from Argentina.
Not gonna lie, the internet's amazing, isn't it? This site alone - five thousand voices, all across the world, all shouting at once, and it can be beamed into my home on this wet little god-forsaken rock from arenas, coffee shops, ferries, you name it. And the Victorians thought they had it good! Barely 100 years later and here we are. Firing little robots up to crawl the surface of Mars. Would blow their minds. For all they say money's the root of all evil, the pursuit of it has done the world a lot of good. I know everyone goes on about how we're destroying planet earth with all our metropoles and conurbations and all these beautiful landscapes scarred by motorways, but I don't know, I think if we'd only take the time to properly look at what we've created, we might reevaluate our perception. Everyone's their own worst critic. Future generations are only gonna see all this as a different brand of beautiful. It's almost magical.

Regarding The Best of Times; I don't think they'd mind playing it live in general, at one point or another; after all, musically, this is by no means "MP's baby" like the SDV/Kevin Moore dilemma. This song is very DT, you can hear JP's and even JR's influence on its writing. Lyrically, singing these kind words about his dad would be more of an honor and a tribute, not a personal offense or whatever.
Playing it for the first time ever in a live setting when you're shooting a DVD, however, is almost suicidal in some perspective. I know they can rehearse offstage and whatnot, but I can't imagine it going smoothly without something fucking up. Some of JLB's playback-backing vocals would not fit right, or he'll have to rerecord something in the studio or Mangini would not be as well prepared as he is on the other songs. Seems to risky to me.

I didn't forget. In fact I stated many times that I have hopes that tomorrow isn't just a B set with the string quartet on the 2 acoustic songs.
I have no pride or principles in this matter. So if they impress me tomorrow, expect me to be very happy about it.

I'd definitely expect more surprises on night 2. I think a quartet is kind of retread after Score/Octavarium, but it's still a nice little addition to change the songs up.
Also I just had a dream about this. In my dream I woke up and read through 4 pages to find that nobody had even updated a real setlist. Then I actually woke up and thought "damn, I have to read through that again?!" :lol

An idea just ran through my head for a brief moment: What if they play Eve with the string quartet, now that would be a surprise. Probably won't happen, but it certainly would be surprising.

I'm upset because DT made it seem like there were going to be quite a few changes and surprises. Maybe they'll be tomorrow night. I'll be very happy if they come through.

Not sure why me being disappointed makes you so upset. Especially if you're as satisfied as you say you are. Can't you just be happy with the dvd and accept that not everyone loves it as much you might? I mean, some of us aren't going to be as thrilled. And that's perfectly okay.

That's a great surprise, as TSM and WFS would sound great with a quartet. The same with BTS and FFH,, also gives people a reason to get the DVD.

I think that bridge section is going to sound great with a quartet, since the original has those nice string lines there. I think that will work nicely. WFS should be interesting too. Both are very simple arrangements where an orchestra can supplement them without sounding busy.

After reading all this, I'm kind of disappointed in the surprises so far. The string quartet has kind of already been done with Orchestra on Score and the set is essentially the same thing they have been playing. I see no real surprises after show #1, imho.
I agree with Adami that I hope they play it less safe tomorrow. Let's see 'To Live Forever' and maybe 'Another Day' and hopefully they bust out a few songs that have NOT been played so far on the tour (or maybe a few that were played on the first few legs).
It seems like their 'extremely long' soundcheck (according to Mangini's FB) would be such a waste if they didn't do something crazy tomorrow (or at least different from the norm that has been the past year or so).
So far, I'm kind of disappointed. Here's to hoping night #2 can bring some crazy surprises. :metal

I just checked out a bootleg (from another show, not this one specifically), and they're using a backing tape of MP's vocals. JP isn't near the mic, so there's no mistaking it.

Checking in from my iPad since I won't be home til tomorrow night to see if Nekov had a kick ass time it looks like indeed he has! I can't read through the thread cause I'm dead tired so I just skimmed nekov's posts and I am so glad they kept the set list and hoping tomorrow would bring the other set list, to me this is about bringing as much of this tour that we experienced and enjoyed so much to a release we can own and relive over and over, it's about documenting this outstanding ADToE era IMO. So surprises and unexpected changes in the set list are not something I'd like to see for this particular occasion.

I mostly agree with Adami, they said that there would be a lot of surprises/crazy stuff and this setlists with the only different thing being the string quartets isn't really living up to my expectations, so I hope they will do something more surprising the 2nd show. At the same time, I have to say I was expecting the first night to have more of a standard setlist than the second one. Just hoping for Learning to Live :metal

This was a bit anticlimactic but also expected. I'm happy with this setlist, more or less; it's all good songs, even if there are repetitions, because, you know, we're not the only ones who are going to buy this DVD.
If you're going to think of the casual fans, it's better to have actual songs from IAW and WDADU than To Live Forever/Don't Look Past Me; it's better to have two shorter, rockier tracks from Awake than one Scarred or even SDV, as treasured as they are in this fanbase (and not treasured by all, at all!); it's understandable that they're including TSCO in it, since that's becoming one of their "signatures"; it's not good, but it's also understandable that they decided to include the only fast-paced minutes of SDOIT outside of those 13 in TGP. And also, this is the concert that everyone's been seeing, more or less, this tour; and for us who haven't seen it, this should slightly make it up for it.
In short, I wouldn't be surprised if they kept the rarities to YJR from now on, though I'm still hoping there would be a surprise or two tonight.

I actually can't really tell from bootleg quality, and I'm not that familiar with what JP's falsetto would sound like. But it would seem pretty silly to me to get JP to sing a vocal to trigger instead of actually singing it live. While it's not what I'd call an easy guitar part, I don't see why he couldn't play the guitar part and sing it too. Even if it's not perfect, that's what a live show is supposed to be.

Pretty awesome they got strings on the stage for the acoustic interlude, i'm sure we'll get more surprises on the second night, and don't forget the potential for extra material on the dvd, like backstage documentary etc.
I'm very excited just for the ADTOE songs and it's amazing that we are getting all the album in a live version, i think this happened only with the Live Scenes album?
Just hoping they get a good sound and mixing, i want to hear MM's drums loud and clear, CiM was quite low quality both picture and sound wise.

Oh come on people, they've been playing this setlist for so long that there's not a chance of making mistakes any more. Do you really think that they would replace them and take a risk with songs they've never played live before? The DVD will be a document of the band's situation at this point in time, they want it to be flawless, they don't worry (and don't have to) if you know that the setlists have been the same. It's not like you've been to every gig. Also, there is a big part of the world that hasn't been to a DT concert supporting ADTOE. The only song we've heard live in Greece is OTBOA! I don't care if I know the setlist for the past few months.
Also, some of you misinterpreted what MM said about the long sound check. It's not because they wanted to rehearse ultra super mega rare songs. They wouldn't do it on the day of the shooting, they would it for the past few months. But guess what they did the past few months: they were playing the songs that will be on the DVD. The long sound check is because there is a DVD shooting and they have to be sure everything is ok.
I think I read yesterday on a thread that DT said there would be no surprises on the setlist. Why is everyone saying that they had announced surprises on the setlist? The only thing I remember them saying about surprises is for the whole DVD, not for the concert part of the DVD.

Yep, I thought that sounded like Petrucci. Backing tracks on Test, though - presumably because it's a tricky vocal part over a tricky guitar part. There's a Spirit Carries On vocal demo out there that would vouch that John's, er, not got good form for falsetto.
Petrucci, that is. Myung's falsetto is exquisite.
Not particularly galvanised by last night's setlist, but I'm excited about the DVD. So far we know we're getting good, high-quality live footage of songs like 6:00, The Dark Eternal Night, The Root of All Evil (presumably with that outro), A Fortune in Lies, and a full 100% of the new album. That's pretty darned cool.
The Spirit Carries On... bleh, but it is kind of the flagship song of their current "era." It's what they called the drummer doc, I'm not at all surprised they brought it back out. Hoping tomorrow for These Walls at the very least - we need footage of These Walls - and the remaining two songs from Dramatic Turn. Anything else is a bonus. Caught in a Web would be cool.
Again, enormously unlikely, and I broadly tend to agree with Stonestef. The main thing they're trying to chronicle is this (really cool!) tour, but I wonder if they might play all three songs from the drummer doc..? Because A Nightmare to Remember would be welcome. It's my least favourite Dream Theater album, but it's still decent, I'd still like to see just a sliver of it. Toss in Wither - that'd do!

Regarding Adami, I am guessing because he has repeated it like 741 times over the last two months. :lol :biggrin:
And I hope those two don't get cut. From the one clip from a few months ago, the light show looks pretty crazy during WIMY/Test, and The Spirit Carries On is too iconic for it to be one of the songs they omit from these shows. Them not playing it is one thing, but playing it and then it being one of the few they don't include on the DVD/Blu-Ray would seem weird.

As I posted above, I'm just really hoping we get a rarity like "To Live Forever". Yeah, it's on two DVDs already, but it's also on DT's greatest hit album, and it has the potential to be an iconic song for them. I even think it'd make a good closer. Just imagine JP's clean guitar intro coming in during an encore, right after the band have come back on, and then played with the jam, and ending with JLB thanking everyone and waving "good night" after the last climactic "to live forever" as the crowd is going nuts. I think it'd work.
As for Adami, I did kinda poke fun at his disappointment. But it was all in jest, hence the subsequent liberal use of nuggets. In line with what Kev said, at first I was more responding to what I perceived as a general disappointment from various posters, but when I got back to my room (where, unlike the phone I was using from the school, I can see peoples avatars/signatures) I realized it was just one guy voicing an opinion multiple times :P

They said there would be a lot of surprises for the Blu Ray, not necessarily the show itself. I wouldn't expect them to go totally nuts with the set list. Just from the standard set lists this tour, we are getting a pretty amazing collection of songs. I know it's easy to forget that when we've been here on the Internet seeing the sets posted after every show. But we really are getting a tremendous set of material even if they don't change a thing (and, honestly, why WOULD they change it up?). That said, while I wouldn't expect them to go nuts and deviate too far from what has been done, I would guess there will still be a surprise or two in tonight's set.

From seeing them twice on this tour, I can tell you that it also gets a tremendous crowd reaction, and JP, James, and Jordan are incredibly jazzed about playing it each night. After the last SF show, Yesh commented to James backstage about the crowd reaction, and James' face just lit up and he started going on about how he just soaks in the crowd reaction each time they play it. It truly has become a concert staple that the band really feels creates a bond between them and the fans when they play it. So there's literally no way it wasn't going to be included on the DVD. To the band, it's much more than "just another song" to fill a spot in the set list. They truly view it as a very special song and one of the high points in their shows (and for those at the shows, it really is, which we tend to forget when we're, again, looking at set lists on the Internet and seeings songs on there that we've listened to so many times that we forget the emotional impact they can have in a live setting).

Ok guys, some thoughts about last night show. I'll try to address all your questions
JLB: As everyone has previously said he is back in his prime. There was a little problem with the sound and on some points he got lost behind JR and JP. He was very active on the stage, he talked to the crowd a lot, he pushed us to cheer for them every time and interacted a lot with the rest of the guys. At one point he almost bumps against JP but he didn't.
I almost forgot, after 6:00 Labrie started giving a speech about filming the DVD and whatnot and he said that people in there should enjoy the show and tell everyone else about it later. I felt a little bad posting the updates after that.
JM: He was JM.
JR: He was great, he cheered with the crowd a lot, he played a hell of a solo and seemed very happy throughout the show.
JP: He is truly the guitar god. He was fantastic all the show and did not overplay every solo as I had seen from him the last 2 shows I attended. He also interacted a lot with the crowd and with JLB.
MM: I must say I was surprised my the genie, when I heard that he was playing a drum solo I wasn't very pumped because I thought it was going to be some super technical and fast stuff but contrary to that his solo was very melodic and ended up with Neil Pearts solo where he crosses hands playing at an insane speed.
He was also very cheerful with the crowd and smiled a lot. The only thing against him was that he overplayed surrounded and killed the beautiful mood a bit.
The crowd: It was not as great as I thought it would be but whenever we got the classics, TSCO, Metropolis, Surrounded the crowd was very loud. Other than that I think it was just normal.
TTTSTA: The vocals were recorded.
War inside my head: JP did the backing vocals but I'm pretty sure that there was also a recording.
String quartet: This part was beautiful and kind of special since they were local musicians, I would have gone on stage and kissed JP and JLB if I could (no homo)

I think it would be really cool if TROAE was the encore for tomorrow, and they can use the ending they made for the 2012 European leg. It would be like closing the show with Octavarium since it is after all, a reprise of the main theme, and is really grandoise.

I can only speak for myself. I love the song, and if I were at a concert, I would love to see it live. But for this, I'm not a concert-goer, I'm just a consumer, and I already have 2 great performances of the song on DVD that are different from each other and memorable in their own rights. From that perspective, unless there is something new again for this one, it will just be a repeat. That's all I'm saying.

I'll just add one more brief point: This tour cycle has been terrific. It really has. Unless you just hate the new album, I think the song selection really had a lot to please almost any fan. The performances were tight. The production has been very good. And the band has such a tremendous positive energy. Unless I am misunderstanding the band's intent, the point of this live release is to capture all of that--not necessarily to simply throw out a collection of live rarities and surprises. As a fan, I think the goal of capturing this most recent tour is a worthy one, and is basically the same goal most bands have for most live releases. What we're getting is a high quality representation of a high quality tour. I don't really see much room for legitimate disappointment in that.

But TSCO isn't anywhere near DT's Don't Stop Believin' etc. In the recent top 10 thread, it didn't even crack the top 25. Granted, we aren't entirely representative of the fanbase, but that's a pretty big margin of difference we're talking here.
If it was Metropolis or PMU etc we were talking about here, sure, but I don't place TSCO in that same category of being worth that many releases without adding something fresh to it, and it's probably my favourite individual song from SFAM (and I love the song).
I don't mind them playing it a lot in their live rotation each tour, as it is a very uplifting live song, but considering how many other great songs aren't going to be on this DVD, I don't think it was the best choice. It's not that I'm expecting 100% new songs, as there's still plenty new to offer here with JLB in top form and MM being the kit, but TSCO isn't really a song we need to hear that many times considering that both the Score and LSFNY versions could be considered pretty definitive live versions.

Tonight's setlist will most likely be the same as in Bogota, possibly with a few changes. I think they want the DVD to include songs that actually got played on this tour so I'm not expecting lots of rarities or extravaganza. Well, they already have a pretty good selection of songs even if they don't pull out any surprise songs. I mean, we will (probably) get 6:00, Caught in a Web, A Fortune in Lies, These Walls, acoustic stuff with a string quartet etc. I'm not a huge fan of TTTSTA or Spirit but as long as the songs I mentioned in the previous sentence get included on the release, I don't mind hearing those 2 on yet another release.

But I could very well be wrong, so I guess we'll see.

I seriously doubt those will be the only duplicates, but it would be cool if the sets were that different.

I'm pretty sure there will NOT be any BCSL material. I don't find it odd in the context of the fact that they haven't played any of it this tour (other than TCOT very early on in Europe only, and I agree that it is too long to repeat here given the number of songs they would like to play). And while I do get what you are saying in the abstract, given the big picture, they really are somewhat limited in what would have been likely to show up in the set. The only thing that looks like it would have been a realistic option would be ANTR. As for the other songs, here's my take:
-AROP: It's short enough to easily fit in a set list. But they DID play it every song on the BCSL tour, so I understand them giving it a rest. And although it's a good song, it's not a great song. I don't see the need for them to have brought it out.
-Wither: Good song, but they are pretty ballad heavy as it is, so it would have been tough to justify this one.
-TSF: I would love to see it some day, but I just didn't see them playing it this tour cycle, if at all.
-TBOT: Whether one agrees or disagrees with the rationale, I think we all at least understand that given that the lyrics are so literal and so personal to MP, this would have been incredibly unlikely.
-TCOT: Great song, but too long. I wouldn't be shocked if we got a YJR release of one of the shows with this song.

Well if you think about it ANTR is too long, AROP is a single and since BMUBMD is in the setlist it's not gonna be played, Shattered Fortress is also long and would be weird for them to play without Portnoy and out of the 12 steps suite (imo), BOT is for MP's father's dead and would be kinda awkward for them to play as well. Wither maybe could be played, but since we've already got the acoustic/piano interlude + Spirit Carries On, probably there's no space for another ballad. I would love to see Count of Tuscany played though, but that's also very long piece and would preclude the possibility of playing at least 3 songs in the same period of time..

Yeah, I mean they played 7 ADTOE songs last night. I'm sure we'll get anywhere from 5 to 7 tonight, which leaves anywhere from 1 to 3 other than OTBOA and BITS that will be repeated. BAI is likely to be one of them.

Ideally, it would be cool if they busted out a song they haven't played all tour yet, but it would be a song Mangini is not that familiar with yet, and it probably doesn't make sense to debut that song with him live at a show that will be recorded for a live DVD/Blu-Ray, especially given their comments over the past year about being more comfortable with songs they are playing frequently vs. the old days of pulling songs out of nowhere and them not being as refined and precise simply because their lack of live play.

If any surprise songs are pulled, it's probably To Live Forever, or one of the audition songs that are not TSCO. ANTR might be too long, but TDOE would fit nicely. Damn that would be awesome to have another DVD rendition of that.

Also, I hate it that they play Surrounded and The Dark Eternal Night again. I know they've been in many of this tour's legs and I know they couldn't change much for a DVD, but honestly, I'd rather have obscure songs from IAW and SC like Another Day, the full version of Take the Time or even Under a Glass Moon, and from SC Prophets, or a song that I like to listen to better like Forsaken.
Or better yet, any song from BCSL. Without showing too much love for MP, he would've never ignored a whole album that didn't have any song to represent it in a live DVD yet when they make a new release.

Since its first performance, Beneath The Surface had "might" instead of "could", and the "found out what all of this means" is intentionally whispered by James. I'm not sure if this makes the line audible by the audience (the fact that it's not on low quality recording doesn't imply that the same goes for human ears), but the theoretical result is not bad.

Regarding BTS, I thought it was just a mistake he makes occasionally, not something he just does all the time. My bad then.
Regarding TSCO, in the recording I found, all I heard was "I found out...this means", maybe it's just the recording then. But it really sounded like he tried to sing it and it just wasn't audible, cause he also whispered "this means" and those words were audible. But then again, you're probably right and it's just the poor quality footage messing with my mind.

Yeah those seemed like they would be the most reasonable switches. It might not be equal in time, but I'm going with a more realistic route.
I'd expect BMU BMD to be played. I remember JP or JLB saying they planned to play an entire album over the two nights. Should've said we plan play ADTOE in its entirety because playing any other full album wouldn't make sense.

Having watched a few of the vids on the 'Tube, I gotta say that:
1) JLB has been so impressive all tour but his performance here on TROAE is just phenomenal.
2) Mangini has managed to pull off one of his best solos from the tour.
3) I cannot watch Metropolis without a huge smile on my face. And Jordan's hat is awesome!

This is almost do-able, except TGP, Home, and TMOLS are all quite out there in terms of chances. Swap TMOLS for Lost Not Forgotten, Home for The Spirit Carries On, and TGP for Bridges In The Sky and then that set is definitely in the cards, imho (although in a different order). I would kill to see The Glass Prison, though.
They NEED to play it on the next tour to represent SDOIT. They've played every other song on SDOIT (with the exception of Disappear) since the 20th Anniversary tour with the exception of TGP. It is TGP's turn to shine!

Or 3: They seem to have begun the DTverse experiment.
Luna Park is now part of another universe in which space-time functions only as the DT members command them to; which is the perfect opportunity to play their entire discography in a show. The theater still looks normal to the people who pass by in this universe but works a-la-Bermuda Triangle when someone passes above or tries to get inside it (Hence Nekov hasn't reported anything yet) and the universe is made of nothingness except for the theater. The project was in development since Jordan joined the band (Kevin wasn't into it because the universe would be open again after the first usage and Derek said the lack of Feather boas was simply unethical) but constant delays including JP complaining there were no fish to hunt before the show made Portnoy question if DT was the right band to do the experiment with. Myung also said the universe was not quiet enough.
When he tried to explain the experiment to Avenged Sevenfold DT and him argued, and that explains his departure from the band. They eventually followed up with the experiment and they're doing it right now. 5 DVDs confirmed. That's why there's no reports.

As someone who follows the live performances and even listens to a few bootlegs, I can testify that these two things are definitely related. The band is playing and sounding so good because they're so well rehearsed.
Take a song like "Surrounded", for example, which pushes James' range to its absolute limits. When they started playing it more frequently, James was kinda everywhere during those high parts, especially the lines directly before and after the solo. Sure, sometimes he'd nail it. But other times he'd get up to those passages and suddenly realize he wasn't going to be able to do it, and then he'd suddenly switch to singing a different melody, without really knowing where he was going with it.
But what I've noticed on recent performances, especially those on this leg, is that James has "settled in" to a standard way of singing it that he seems to be able to pull-off every night. Even though it's a compromise with the album version in some ways, it's still a damn good performance, because it sounds like it's rehearsed and it's supposed to be that way, and it doesn't have that feeling of being a "lukewarm improvisation" that the less well-rehearsed performances from previous tours have been affected by.

Welp! That explains a lot. Wish they played TCOT or LTL though, or have a far more varied setlist in general, and I am a bit disappointed just like Adami.
That being said, They didn't promise on a big show and they stated they would play the same setlist in South America. Oh well. I hope the extras and the performance make it interesting (And I'm pretty sure they will, so I'm excited for that). A mini-journal through all the cities would be really nice.

I will say that one cool thing about this DVD is the chance for the drums to be mixed better. Therefore (assuming they do mix it better than ADTOE), the mix plus visuals of Mangini would be nice to finally see all of the insane things he is doing.

Oh, I'm sure you WON'T be the only one who is disappointed. But the problem with being disappointed in the set lists is that any disappointment is completely unjustified. I mean, from all accounts, the performance was amazing. And we got the new album in its entirety, plus 13 other songs (for a total of 21 songs altogether), plus keyboard, guitar, and drum solos. For the accoustic sets, which people who have seen the tour have already been raving about, they took it up another notch by including a string quartet. The whole thing was shot in hi-def and is going to be released on Blu-Ray, which fans have been clamoring for for years. And we've been promised lots of extras on the disks.
No offense, but given all that, expressing any disappointment comes across to me as incredibly spoiled and ungrateful. I for one am looking forward to getting this and, realizing that it is probably more content than any DT release so far (or at least, up near the top), spending a few days watching it.

Shoot! Until you mentioned that, I completely forgot that I meant to mention to him that it would be AWESOME for him to have a birds-eye view drum cam up on top of his kit, and I forgot both times! >:( I'm really hoping there is something on the Blu-Ray that focuses just on him.

I think that, except for Surrounded, it killed the original mood of the songs in CiM.

Not trying to be harsh. I'm just saying that it doesn't serve people well to disregard how cool of a release this is and only focus on the fact that it doesn't meet their own personal expectations. I mean, people are certainly entittled to their opinions, and we are pretty free in letting people voice those opinions here. But with that freedom also comes the freedom for some to point out that criticism just doesn't look good. Imagine if you were the band and, after these months of planning, and after coming off two stellar performances, you were feeling pretty good about the whole thing and feeling like you were about to release an awesome product for the fans, only to read people complaining about how it doesn't measure up to what they imagined it would be. Unfortunately, some of us don't take the time to think that through.
Look, I don't mean to be overly critical of people expressing their opinions. I'm certainly guilty of doing the same thing. Not trying to make anyone feel bad either. Just pointing out that I think people would be better served to appreciate rather than detract.

I don't write my posts worrying about how it will affect the band if they read it. Why? Because it won't. I'm one of like 4 people here showing ANY bit of criticism what so ever. Everyone else is praising this DVD as the greatest thing since the orgasm. I think if DT reads this thread they will say "Good thing the fans like what we did, minus that stupid jew".
And I'm pretty sure the band hyped this up themselves. I can't recall the interviews, and may be wrong, but I kind of remember them saying there will be amazing surprises and so forth, and we really didn't have anything that lived up to the hype THEY created. Had they said "We will record 2 shows. We will play it safe so that we can assure our best performances" then I wouldn't have any reason to be disappointed. But they made it seem like they'd do something a bit.......more.
God forgive me for not praising every single thing the band does simply because they're doing it.
And the only complaint I've made is the predictable set lists. That's all. If one criticism is too much for some of you guys to handle, then maybe you're being a bit too sensitive.
And I wouldn't have to repeat these criticisms so often if you guys didn't try to yell at me every time I made it, thus prompting me to defend myself.

They said there would be a lot of surprises for the Blu Ray, not necessarily the show itself. I wouldn't expect them to go totally nuts with the set list. Just from the standard set lists this tour, we are getting a pretty amazing collection of songs. I know it's easy to forget that when we've been here on the Internet seeing the sets posted after every show. But we really are getting a tremendous set of material even if they don't change a thing (and, honestly, why WOULD they change it up?).

I kind of see Adami's point: he's just disappointed with the setlist and he hasn't said that the DVD's gonna be awful because of it, and it's okay. I think the issue is getting a little bit aggressive on both sides, though. There is no need to be upset.

The DVD/Blu-Ray looks like it will be what most thought it would be, a collection of the songs played through the whole tour.
I hope the bonus content includes some of the special moments of the tour, such as the I&W anniversary and the second night in Long Island.

I'd take that over Chaos In Motion any day of the week. Amazing setlist there, and yet, it literally did nothing else right at all.

Pretty much this. If they keep every song and don't repeat any of them that leaves us with 24 songs, unless my math is wrong, and, correct me if I'm wrong and 14 songs that haven't had an official live release before, that sounds pretty good to me. It still remains to be seen what other content will be on the Blu Ray. Like others pointed out we could see footage of the second night in NY, or the I&W documentary. We could even get a commentary of things that everyone is raving about, as well an on the road documentary as hinted at by the man following James, John and Jordan in Jordan's latest youtube video.
So I honestly can't see why any one would be dissapointed with a killer long set, with the majority of them being their first official live release, and the potential for other great goodies on this DVD.

Agree with what someone said about being excited to hear a different drum mix on the ADTOE songs. Thrilled about that actually, and also just to hear Mangini play all the other songs in high quality. Curious now about who's going to the mix the DVD.

Ok, two thoughts about this night.
1: James sounded pretty awesome. I think the problem was my location. I was much closer to the stage this time
2: Forget what I said about the crowd yesterday, again I think the location changed it cause it sounded very loud this time. Everyone cheering and singing along. I expect that the DVD to have a decent volume for the crowd cause it really added up to the show.

First, thanks a lot Nekov for all the updates, here with some friends we were following closely the thread to know what we are going to get in the next release, and I have to say I'm really happy with the result, the band is playing great and I'm sure the Blu-Ray will be amazing.
About the DVD, it is interesting to see what James said about this shows in the interview for the Venezuelan website:
Q:The setlist for the South American Tour, it will vary from what is being shown here in the U.S?
JLB: It will vary for the DVD, definitely is going to vary because we are shooting two nights so there will be some substitutes going on. As far as the rest of South America the fact that we are only going into Guatemala one show, Salvador one show, Costa Rica one show, to us it makes sense to bring just probably a master set that we do for those countries, anything like that it will probably be the master A set, and then as I said, the DVD will be switching some songs.

Maybe some people expected more "variation" according to what James said, but anyways, this DVD is going to be great, the band was playing amazing during this South American Tour and I'm sure this could be their best live release ever, I certainly hope so.

And I think many DT fans are, because of what has been established previously. So to not have the surprises we are accustomed to (even as was evident from the 3 surprise tracks at the second Huntington show) IS a letdown. When looking at the setlists, I also was disappointed to see that there was nothing especially special included for these shows, save for the string quartet. And that's AFTER adjusting my thinking to not expect exciting unusual things like when a certain someone else was in the band.
That said, I went ahead and combined the setlists of both nights and created a playlist in iTunes to see what it would look like and to get a rough idea of how long the DVD would be if all the songs from both nights were included. The setlist looks like this:

and the total came out to 2 hours, 41 minutes. Factor in the solos, small extensions of songs and gaps in between songs, and I think you can add another 30 minutes to the overall length. So the total would be roughly 3 hours, 11 minutes, which would make it longer than any of DT's other live releases (when comparing strictly to the music of Chaos in Motion). When talking with JP after the LA show, I remember him saying that there would be some bonus tracks included from the Huntington show, so I think it's safe to say that Paradigm Shift, To Live Forever and 21st Century Schizoid Man will be the bonus tracks, and who knows, maybe Another Day from the Austin show too. So that'll be another 23 minutes (or 28 with Another Day).
It should be noted that this is going by the notion that their plans haven't changed. JP also told me they planned on having TRoAE be played right before the drum solo (and they would bring back the "Octavarium"/heavy ending as they did earlier on the tour) but it appears that this plan changed. But I digress...
Assuming that they will release one of the full length shows from the summer Euro leg on Ytsejam Records that has LtL as the encore (instead of Metropolis), there will only be 3 repeated songs from this new DVD (TW, OtBoA, CiaW) which ain't bad at all.
So to sum it up, I feel for you Adami and know where you're coming from. Looking at some of the song selections chosen for these 2 shows, I too feel it could have been different than what it ended up being (I'm right with you on not needing to see TSCO on yet another live release and the same goes for WIMH/TTTSTA when TGD or TCoT could have been played instead). OTOH it could have been worse too, so I'm not gonna complain too much.
When creating the hybrid setlist, I was surprised to see that not just BCaSL wasn't represented, but neither was FII or ToT. Very strange IMO, even if expected judging from the setlists played throughout this tour.

Tonight's setlist will most likely be the same as in Bogota, possibly with a few changes.
Looks like I was right, the few changes being switching the places of Caught in a Web and These Walls! :lol Of course it would've been cool to get some special songs for the DVD but I'm happy with the setlists and I think the band want to make the DVD setlist to be one that fans in any country could've gotten, except longer. It's also a bit of a risk to play some song for the first time on the tour (leg) at the DVD shoot, there could be screw-ups. Well, now they have 2 versions of most songs to choose from to make the DVD perfect and maybe we'll get Ytse Jam bootlegs of the European summer tour and the second night in Huntington...
And as a side note, JP mentioned that the crowds didn't warm up to The Great Debate but I think they wouldn't have had that problem in South America!

No real surprises on the setlist, but it's going to be a hell of a live album.
These Walls, Caught In A Web, 6:00, The Root Of All Evil, Wait For Sleep, The Silent Man and the entire ADTOE are the most exciting songs for me, and i can't imagine how good the image quality will be, given it was shot in high definition, and the amazing light show.
From the few videos i've watched, James sounded really good, the crowd was energetic and the whole band was on fire.
As Adami said, i just hope for a very good live mix, i thought Score and especially CiM were a bit weak in terms of mix, and i really want to hear everyone clearly with the right amount of volume.
Also, i hope we will get a DVD+CD edition, not only because i'm bored to rip the sound from the DVD to put in on my ipod, but i would like it for my collection, CiM was cool in terms of packaging, despite being a poor offering.

I was too a bit disappointed when I purposely woke up in the middle of the night to see the setlist. I was at least hoping for To Live Forever and maaaaaybe Learning To Live. But still, I cannot but be extremely excited for this release: strong setlist, blu ray, South American crowd, "stellar surprises for the BR", clips from Huntington, on the road documentary and who knows how much more.
With all this goods, it's quite impossible to be disappointed for more than one minute. :)

Outcry, Beneath The Surface, Wait For Sleep, Far From Heaven, BMUBMD are gonna witness me reminiscing about the first leg of the U.S tour.
If they had played any song on these two night that wasn't previously played on this tour I would have considered it a screw up, this is for a release documenting A Dramatic Tour of Events and the two nights beautifully spanned that year or so of this particular tour, bound to leave some stuff out for practicality as they surely couldn't play every single song that was played on this tour but they covered the majority of it. I personally would have liked Fatal Tragedy and Ytse Jam from the 1st leg to make it, they didn't, perfectly understandable as the choices was their decision not mine and still what they played more than makes up for it. I'm not disappointed.
I want a DVD of this tour, you put one of the "surprise" ideas being thrown around like 8VM and this becomes something else, not better or worse, just not a representation of this tour.
I'm not denying the disappointed folks the right to be so or dismissing them, I'm just trying to shed a light on this angle which I personally find very important.

They said there would be a lot of surprises for the Blu Ray, not necessarily the show itself. I wouldn't expect them to go totally nuts with the set list. Just from the standard set lists this tour, we are getting a pretty amazing collection of songs. I know it's easy to forget that when we've been here on the Internet seeing the sets posted after every show. But we really are getting a tremendous set of material even if they don't change a thing (and, honestly, why WOULD they change it up?).
Oh well, maybe it's true that they haven't said that there would be a lot of suprises for the show itself. But to me it seemed that they had, and thus I was a bit disappointed with the setlists. Anyway, I can't say I'm not excited for the DVD anymore, I guess I'll enjoy it anyway (especially when the likes of 6:00 and These Walls are on it!) and just wait for all the other cool shows/songs from the last tours to be released on Ytsejam :)

I am extremely excited for this release. I have to agree with Bosk concerning the setlists and actually following them and seeing them for the whole of the year, so it's hard for me to be disappointed when I look at the songs we're getting on the release. The string quartet should be really cool - also really excited about a version of Surrounded where James sounds really on point. Gonna be great.

Scotty put it perfectly. We as fans have been spoiled by the band's previous releases. It's fair to be disappointed to get (multiple) repeats of some songs that are already on DVDs, and mildly popular, whereas there are some we'd like a great DVD release of (I'll include LtL on that, as I really don't care too much for the LSFNY version).
None-the-less, it'll be a great DVD, I'll buy it the Tuesday it's released, and enjoy every moment of it.

Can't wait to get my grubby paws on this release. Love that all of ADTOE are going to be on it. No BC&SL songs sucks for me personally, but it won't spoil the enjoyment one bit. Grateful the band has put such an effort into making this, and I hope they release it digitally on iTunes so I can have an excuse to buy 2 copies. Going to be a killer release. At then end of the day it is about capturing the current era of Dream Theater and that is ADTOE and Mike Mangini. No way this DVD is going to disappoint.

Disappointing as it can be when a band doesn't play the songs you want to hear (or include them on a live DVD), with a band like DT you have to concentrate on what they play, rather than what they don't.
I'm happy to see TSCO again, as it's one of DT's finest moments, and they should play it at every single show, IMO. WIMH/TTTSTA should be blistering on DVD with the light and stage show going into overdrive - it was a real highlight of the tour. I hope the DVD sticks with the first night's setlist, as I'd rather hear TSM and BTS than FFH and WFS (and 6:00, of course), but if These Walls makes it onto the DVD, even if only as a bonus track, I shall be a happy man.
I'd love to see DT release more "official bootlegs" like Pearl Jam do. I'd love to get hold of a proper release of the early European setlist with Peruvian Skies, Endless Sacrifice, Great Debate and TCOT. Despite what I said about not complaining about what they don't play, I note there's nothing from BC&SL on this set. Shame the YtseJam bootlegs seem to have gone belly-up with MP's departure.
Roll on the DVD! Let's hope if there's a companion CD release (please?) it has a decent mix this time! :metal

I think it would be cool if they released a CD of just the songs off of A Dramatic Turn of Events in album order, kind of like how Rush did with Moving Pictures: 2011. Granted, Dream Theater didn't play the album cover to cover all at once and in order, but I would still buy it.

Especially special? Like I told SeRox, just because you don't think it was "especially special" doesn't mean others might not have. :)
These shows were a terrific representation of the tour, even if they left out a few songs that got played earlier in the tour (like The Count, TGD, Endless Sacrifice, etc.).
And I think sometimes people get hung up on every album getting represented, when that really isn't necessary. If a set list is great from top to bottom, flows really well and the crowd enjoys it like crazy, does it really matter if a few albums aren't represented? The answer, of course, is no.
Sure, Portnoy gave us some exciting unusual things, but he also gave us some things that could have been a lot better as well. Disappear being in the Budokan set list was a great surprise, but being that late in the set was poor placement; it would have worked better in the middle of the set, instead of being that close to the end, as it was kind of a buzz kill after Stream of Consciousness. Same thing with Score and some of the odd choices and omissions from that set list. So, while, yes, he gave us some "especially special" things ;), his set lists were not perfect either.

I hope that they release a CD/DVD since I do not own a blu-ray player and I would like to have the video and audio versions of the DVD. From what Scotty has said on the last page, I'm excited for the Huntington bonus songs as well as some other features which have yet to be revealed.
I agree with Adami that they could have switched the sets up a little more between the nights, because they could have. The set, imho, is not the best they could have gone with. Although, I'm happy to see These Walls and Caught In A Web on the DVD. The bonus songs and bonus features should make up for my disappointment regarding the set of choice for the show. From what the band said, I was excited for something 'stellar' instead of a string quartet, which was already done on Score (essentially).

I've got a hunch that it's going to look like, if not better than, L@B. If so, then it might end up being their best DVD yet. I enjoyed the darker atmosphere of Budakon, Score was too bright for me. With that seeing TSCO in this setting will kick Scores version out of the field.

I'm guessing that if they don't like how one of them sounded then that might get cut but I wouldn't think so. I can tell you right now MM's solo will be taken from the first night. On the second night he flopped the part where he plays at his top speed but was very classy about it :)

I'm pretty sure about it too, but I wanted to make sure cause in this case it's gonna disappoint me like hell if they don't feature both songs from the rotating ones. CIAW, 6:00, TDEN and These Walls are all very exciting to me as a fan.
CIAW doesn't have a proper representation post-5 Years in a Livetime (LSFNY version was a mess, and JLB's voice cracked in Chile 2005). CIM's version of TDEN is probably one of its weakest performances. 6:00 barely has any representation other than Awake in Japan, and These Walls is one of the few songs from Octavarium they didn't feature on Score, I'm psyched to see a proper version of it (we have Romavarium and other bootlegs, but meh).

Up, down, high, low, in, out etc. I don't know anything about filming a concert, but I found this to be bothersome. I trust the DT boys know what they are doing. I just hope the dvd is not filled with quick shots and constant cut aways. I like smooth camera work and longer shots of the musicians rather than quick hitting shots then cut to the next guy. I have yet to see a vid for These Walls. If someone has, could you pm me the link? Only if that is not against forum rules. Thanks.

Yea, this is all speculation at best. But, I think a middle ground between Score and a typical Over The Edge live video is what we will end up seeing. And that is a very large middle ground, to be honest.

Regarding the cameras, 2 of them were on cranes moving around, 2 more were being held by guys that walked on the stage, 4 of them were in front of the stage and the remaining ones were on the back of the arena filming the stage. MM also had a couple of cams in his drum kit

There was a lot of zooming back and forth over the audiences heads, quick cut away shots, a lot of close ups of concert goers singing etc. I really hope JP and the boys don't let them do this to the dvd. It's worth baring in mind that the videos here are of bands with considerably different styles of music - therefore the recording reflects this quite a bit more.

With the gigantic setlist made out of both nights (excluding duplicates of course), I highly doubt any extra songs as bonus feature. Keeping my hopes up for YJR.

Very true. I honestly have not one single complaint about this setlist, any thing else would be a huge bonus, after watching a youtube video of Bridges In The Sky I can say it definitely cemented my excitement for this DVD

I strongly suggest people read the rules immediately if they don't know them. I've already posted twice in this thread reminding people that asking for or posting links is off limits, which has been a longstanding forum rule. And the general attitude of subsequent posts saying, "hey, I hope posting this video isn't against the rules, but I'm going to post it anyway and hope for the best" doesn't fly. Even though there is nothing wrong with the videos you posted, your general posting habits in this thread are a problem. Enjoy a vacation while you think about that.

I'm hoping for a real good on the road documentary. A thing that tells me it will be pretty long is that, and I'm pretty sure you have noticed that, Jordan posts less on the road videos on his youtube account. He used to film and post a video of the crowd of every show they played in the last tour as well as him and other members of the band going out to the cities' major attractions; he doesn't do that anymore, and he loves to do it; Maybe it's because he's storing them all for the documentary? I seriously hope so. I was really excited when they mentioned Bogota in Maiden's Flight 666, and if this happens the excitement will be double.

There really isn't any reason that they wouldn't do a CD combination with the DVD. I don't have a blu-ray player, so I will get the CD/DVD combo if that becomes available. I like to be able to easily get the audio tracks to put them on my iPod so I can listen to the concert without having to watch the video all the time. It seems like a common sense decision to me, imho.

Yeah that makes 100% sense. I don't have a blu-ray player either so CD/DVD for me. There's no point since I don't have a giant TV the quality difference will impossible to notice.

I imagine they won't have blu-ray exclusive extras. I myself will probably buy the Bluray video and the CD version from iTunes.

CIAW doesn't have a proper representation post-5 Years in a Livetime (LSFNY version was a mess, and JLB's voice cracked in Chile 2005). CIM's version of TDEN is probably one of its weakest performances. 6:00 barely has any representation other than Awake in Japan, and These Walls is one of the few songs from Octavarium they didn't feature on Score, I'm psyched to see a proper version of it (we have Romavarium and other bootlegs, but meh).
Yep, yep. I am hopeful that the live version of These Walls will make me like the song more. I think the flat production of OV doesn't help its cause in regards to the studio version.

For example this (https://www.amazon.com/Anesthetize-DVD-Blu-ray-Porcupine-Tree/dp/B003F0NFHM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1345613974&sr=8-1&keywords=porcupine+tree+dvd) is how Porcupine Tree did it. Both DVD and BluRay and DVD in the package, the DVD being a waste for the BluRay player owner but fair to the DVD player owner. The waste isn't that huge since the price range is still reasonable.
I would love a CD release as well, a separate one like they did with LSFNY and L@B but if I don't get it I'm pretty sure I'll find a decent audio rip of the BluRay that would sound just as good.

Well, colour me slightly disappointed. I remember reading a quote from James somewhere stating something in the vain of 'You guys will flip!' Well, reading that setlist I don't flip. I'm sure it's going to be a great dvd, though. Great pic and sound, and I'm hoping some nice surprises in the extra bits. I do need a good dvd of this tour, since I haven't been to see them this time around.

Well, lets talk about what' actually going to be released. I know they filmed both nights, but I seriously doubt both will be released. I think they'll release the first night as the official DVD, and use some moments from the second night if they need some things to fix, like to cover some mistakes, overdub something here and there.

Mladen Most likely both nights will be mixed into one long feature. Repeated songs will be mixed together for best shots, that's how proshot home releases are usually made when the source is two or three consecutive nights at the same venue.

This is the most likely scenario. I don't see any reason for them to exclude anything from the two shot nights, excluding the duplicates where they have a choice of the best performance.

After a couple of days to wear off the excitement there is something I need to say. Out of the 7 shows I've attended these were by far the worse due to 3 main reasons:
1) Sound: It seems to me that they were so concentrated in recording the DVD that they forgot they were playing for a live audience. If you were sitting in the bottom part the sound was really good (except for James, he was low) but if you were anywhere else there were mayor sound problems, either some instruments being too high, James and JMX being too low.
2) Setlist: I love BITS, BAI and BTS but I really don't care for the rest of the album. Having witnessed a lot of those songs on both nights plus only getting a couple of additional songs that were among the classics made both of these the worst set lists I've witnessed by them. I was expecting the second night to be more different from the first night.
3) Crowd: The crowd was nowhere near as good as the previous times I've seen them and I think it was mostly because of the two points stated above. The combination of bad quality sound plus a not really interesting set of songs brought the energy of the show down. Whenever the DVD is out you will be able to see the difference on how the crowd reacts to LNF or BMU BMD compared to PMU or Metropolis.
That being said, I don't regret attending both nights as DT is my favorite band and in spite of this I had a good time though not as good as I expected it to be.

Regarding #2, hopefully that wouldn't have been a surprise to anyone. DT has always HEAVILY featured whatever their current album is on any given tour--more so than a lot of bands, especially older bands who tend to tour more on the "classics" and sprinkle in a few newer tunes here and there. I guess it's kind of a bummer for people who may not like whatever the newest album is. But for fans like me who love the new stuff, it's great. Honestly, the two shows I saw this tour are some of the best shows I have ever seen.

Why? The band has said in the last year that while some songs will still be rotated from night to night, that they won't rotate as heavily as in the past, as they like having more of a static set list every night, so expecting a completely different set list was just unrealistic, IMO.

In the interviews prior to the show they said they would be rotating songs and they talked about surprises and awesome shows. All of that made me think that the shows would be more different. Obviously I blew it out of proportion.

Think of it this way:
Them doing an acoustic set every single night for most of the last year was pretty special. Now, had they done that five years ago, they might have saved it for that one big show, but the band did it one better by featuring that little set at every show, which, in the words of Scotty, was "especially special" ;), especially when you consider they had never done that before in the midst of their normal shows (in other words, not a show dedicated to just that, aka Rotterdam). It's just that this time around, fans got it at every show, instead of just the fans at one show. More fans getting something really cool and rare is always a good thing.
Plus, when you look at the set lists of the past year, unless you aren't crazy about ADTOE, I am not sure how anyone can have a beef. The set were well-rounded and featured a nice mixture of new songs, classics, rockers and the acoustic set.

I love these set lists. Was watching a show from Prague, and the atmosphere for WIMH/TTTSTA is some of their best. Those Eyes and the spirals mixed with the lighting all add to those songs. That's what i'm excited to see captured, I thought Scores setlist could've been way better, yet this one is solid.

That one was pretty special because on the second chorus of lie they stopped playing and turned off the lights, letting the crowd alone sing that part. :)

Regarding #1 Nekov there seems to have been a lot of complaints about how loud it gets through out the N.A tour. I could hardly hear any bass at the concert I went to.
#2 I know it's a fan to fan taste difference thing but I'll take either Luna Park setlists over any of your previous set lists any day, again and again. Well, I'd stop at that set list that ends with ItPoE for a minute of hesitation and then proceed to chose the current set lists :lol
Just a matter of different tastes I know, but they call a band "ballsy" when they play set dominated by new material instead of hits and fan favorites. Myself I think it's the quality and the reception of the new material that gives the band the balls to do so.

2: Really liked the setlist. I usually don't like WIMH/TTTSTA but it was very good here. But I like the new album so... (you're right about the crowd having very different reactions to songs from other albums though, but that's normal)
3: The crowd, for the most part, SUCKED. In comparison to other shows (especially 2005 at Obras) it was awful. That was the big letdown for me. My area on the first night wasn't excited at ALL. Barely clapping, almost no screaming, just awful. I was really pissed but enjoyed myself anyway. People on the 3rd row were actually SITTING WATCHING THE SCREEN on a bunch of songs. Why the hell are you even there? Wait for the DVD! Ugh... (as a fellow argentinian you'll get what I'm saying)
The second night was a bit better (awesome on Pull Me Under for example) but not that much. Petrucci actually HAD TO ASK PEOPLE TO NOT SIT on These Walls. As soon as the verse started people started sitting and he made a gesture like: "What are you guys doing? Get up!" I think most people saw him cause we remained standing for the rest of the show except on the acoustic set.
I really thought Luna Park would explode. They were shooting a DVD, are you kidding me? People didn't even seem all that excited to be there.

And that's even in spite of Lie, Never Enough, IWBY, PoW being included.
edit: And I don't mean to say there's anything wrong with the Luna Park setlists at all, it's more to do with my indifference towards ADTOE and Awake, and very much underpresenting most of my favourite DT albums. Personal preference. :)

I was at other 4 DT shows in the Luna Park and in all of them the crowd went nuts. It was this specific two. Nothing to do with the awful sits.

The seats don't help. Lots of older people and "snobs" or whatever instead of the die-hard DT fans that chant all the songs, guitar parts, etc. (lots of them probably couldn't afford the better seats so you had little "groups" going crazy and entire sections just sitting there doing nothing.)
You'll probably see me in the DVD cause I was going crazy and the camera behind Rudess and the one on the left of the stage was on me and my friends a LOT haha.

Me too. I was probably one of the most vocal supporters of this DVD being somewhere like South America as opposed to somewhere else like North America, because of the crazy audiences. Not gonna affect the quality of this DVD though. It just could have been the icing on the delicious cake.

Me too. I was probably one of the most vocal supporters of this DVD being somewhere like South America as opposed to somewhere else like North America, because of the crazy audiences. Not gonna affect the quality of this DVD though. It just could have been the icing on the delicious cake.
You'll get SOME crazy but not as expected. I was very bummed out about it too, to the point of getting angry about it cause even the DT guys seemed let down.

If this is true about the audience on these two concerts, I'm absolutely shocked and bitterly disappointed. South American fans are known to be more animated, I'm sure the band expected the crowd to be energized, but if they really decided to sit down and barely clap while the band is filming the DVD... Well, if any of you are reading this, you should be ashamed of yourselves. :tdwn
The DVD is still going to kick some ass, though. But it could sure use a good crowd.

I've been to some very fun seated gigs, and some fairly static standing gigs, but the most animated ones have always been standing and the most static by far was sat down. Always feel a pang of dismay when I find out a gig's sitty-downy.

Yes, it WILL be better than Budokan by miles (not that you need that much) and Score also but for me, having attended other DT shows here in Argentina it wasn't very good at all.
You're right though that by "global standards" it will be good, but I guess I expected much more. I wanted that place going absolutely nuts and aside from a couple of songs (Pull Me Under, Metropolis, intro of TDEN and some of TROAE) it was pretty bleh.
I'm sure the guys at Over The Edge will do a great job showcasing the fans that, like me, were actually into it. I jumped over my second row sit to the front on Pull Me Under haha, the guys in front were very cool about it and security didn't say anything cause it was the last song... 30 seconds later people from every seat were crowding the front of the stage jumping and screaming like crazy, best part of the shows by far!!!

They had already played 4 times in that venue with the seats and all and those 4 times the crowd was amazing. The seats are not to blame.

Anyway, if the crowd participation is less than great on the DVD, the Argentinian fans should stop asking "When are you coming to Argentina" all the time, they had their chance :lol

If Take the Time wasn't fucking abridged, it would've been an great set IMO for a pretty short performance. Then again I really like PoW, I basically only like TCOT in a live setting, and you can't blame the songs themselves for a lousy performance; The Mirror / Lie are a great choice. Not the best from Awake, but they're usually extremely fun live.

I mean, I enjoyed the gig. However - The Count of Tuscany, while a great song, is a rubbish encore. Three minutes to get going, about three minutes of spacey floydy stuff in the middle... by the time the "whoaaaaas" arrive, not only is the audience tired out from the rest of the gig anyway, but they've had the chance to space out, too. And the correct response to a band playing The Dance of Eternity, while impressive, is to stand there and shrug. Clap after the ragtime section, but mostly shrug. One Last Time - nice song, not amazing, and it's certainly not a live song. And The Spirit Carries On is played at every gig. Nice, but it's probably been played more than Pull Me Under over the last seven years.
Sacrificed Sons was good! And In the Name of God. Religious zealots took a fucking pasting at that gig. And though it was predictable, I liked getting all the live songs from Black Clouds & Silver Linings. In the Name of God was the only real "moment" of the night, though. That ain't grand.
I preferred the gigs before Black Clouds came out. I think they were up there alongside the Dramatic Turn tour and the 20th Anniversary Tour as some of the best setlists. I was at Leeds, and I think it's the best gig I've been to bar none:

To rob - again, I'm a little weird when it comes to setlists, but I think I would enjoy both of the sets you posted equally. Maybe I'd even enjoy the first one more.
I've been to a concert that had a similar set to the second one you posted (Israel @ 2009), with some changes (it had Take the Time and Pull Me Under, some other songs were dropped though). And I didn't have such a good time as far as the setlist goes. The band's energy was fantastic but this set is a little too centered around heavy songs, getting metalheads excited.
The first setlist, though, has A Nightmare to Remember; which has a few moments that are just as heavy but also the "Hopelessly Drifting" section which is probably my favorite moment in BCSL. Wither, One Last Time, Sacrificed Sons and ITNOG are all fantastic songs that I would love to see live. And I do appreciate the instrumentation of TCOT so that's a plus.
I guess I just don't find the second setlist too exciting for too many reasons. From having only the first half of a 2-parts song, to an abridged version of Voices, to a medley that cuts the best parts of 3 of my favorite songs, and of course some of my least favorite songs in both Train of Thought (As I Am), Systematic Chaos (Constant Motion) and Black Clouds (A Rite of Passage). It just falls short.

Going back ontopic with the Luna Park's shows - is it wrong to say that I actually hope they'd autotune a few notes? According to some recording James' high note in Far From Heaven was a little flat, and honestly I'd personally rather have a few heavily edited moments here and there to compensate for a few inevitable mistakes. Because otherwise, he's been spot on for the whole tour including both shows.

Yeah I was there too and it was incredible. My favourite DT performance was seeing them at High Voltage though. That was something else. :metal

Well? He didn't get to. The played "Voices" but, aside from that, everything else was from SDOIT and onward. He was really disappointed, and I doubt I'll be able to talk him into paying for a DT ticket again.

Could not agree. Don't get me wrong, Portnoy usually did a good job with the set lists, but times like that are when he outsmarted himself and did a bunch of different things just to be different, IMO. Or when certain cities only got certain surprises. Like when A Change of Seasons was brought back and played here and there on the Train of Thought tour. Sure, it was great for those of us who got it in our city, but it had to suck for those in cities who didn't get it, especially if they read online that it had been brought back. Nowadays, if the band brings back a song that hasn't been played in a while, like 6:00 or Ytse Jam, they play it every night, in every city, which is the way it should be.

I meant that he missed the note he hit in the recorded version, no matter if the original one is a little flat or not. Since I've heard it that way for dozens of times I'm used to it even if there's a mistake in the original.

Then for some reason towards the end of ITNOG the football (soccer) player Robin van Persie climbed onto the stage from the crowd and started singing along with James to the "whoaah ohhh ohhhh. whoaaah ohh ohhhh. whooahhh ohh ohh ohhhhhhhhh ohhhhhhhh" part :rollin :huh:

What time is it all likely to kick off? Get the feeling it'll be fairly late, but I'll happily pick up a coffee or two and watch the songs roll out in realtime. I might even keep a playlist as I go. Start five minutes after Bridges in the Sky starts, and keep adding songs to it as they're reported from Argentina.
Not gonna lie, the internet's amazing, isn't it? This site alone - five thousand voices, all across the world, all shouting at once, and it can be beamed into my home on this wet little god-forsaken rock from arenas, coffee shops, ferries, you name it. And the Victorians thought they had it good! Barely 100 years later and here we are. Firing little robots up to crawl the surface of Mars. Would blow their minds. For all they say money's the root of all evil, the pursuit of it has done the world a lot of good. I know everyone goes on about how we're destroying planet earth with all our metropoles and conurbations and all these beautiful landscapes scarred by motorways, but I don't know, I think if we'd only take the time to properly look at what we've created, we might reevaluate our perception. Everyone's their own worst critic. Future generations are only gonna see all this as a different brand of beautiful. It's almost magical.

We just wrapped up a week in South America producing Dream Theater’s new concert DVD. The shoots included two live concert recordings at Luna Park in Buenos Aires, Argentina and documentary footage in both Colombia and Argentina for the special features. Dream Theater put on an incredible show both nights for the sold-out stadium. Mike Leonard produced and directed the show under his company, Over the Edge Productions. A special thanks to the OTE crew that came down with us: Chris Paul, Kelly Cook, Alan Clary, Godfrey Tabarez, Jordan Bross and Jackie Zampella. Today marks the start of postproduction for the new concert DVD which will be released on BluRay and contain plenty of bonus features.

A lot of people still have DVD, definitely more than enough to warrant releasing it. They're just be needlessly cutting off a sizable portion of sales for no reason whatsoever.

Yeah I don't have a TV let alone a big screen or blu ray player. I use my computer for everything. I'll use that to watch the DVD.

Until DVD has gone the way of cassette tapes and the like, it will continue to be produced. Blu ray is much better but is still not used by everyone.

Until DVD has gone the way of cassette tapes and the like, it will continue to be produced. Blu ray is much better but is still not used by everyone.
Yep. It's slowly getting there though. It's at the point where the release of both is pretty much necessary.

Depends. I have the DVD and bought the blue ray because I'll still watch the concert from time to time. If you don't watch it anymore then there's no point, but the blue ray is better.

Im not a troll.....im a 20 plus year DT fan who got laid off twice in the last 2 years ...about to lose my house ....had to file bankruptcy...and the only thing that keeps me going is the music of DT....now i am quite sure That the blu ray from LUNA PARK isnt out yet...and if it is i would kindly like to know where you got it.

DREAM THEATER's August 19 and August 20 concerts at Estadio Luna Park in Buenos Aires, Argentina will be professionally filmed and recorded for the band's next live DVD, to be released sometime next year.

Probably some time around James is going to tease us how the DVD will be amazing and then we wait... wait... wait.. and then he is going to tease us again until the day it'll be released.
But that's the point and best way to keep us bumped.

Still, I believe they will choose a song from ADTOE for promotional reasons. Also, the encore is invilable. :lol

Fair point, but assuming they use both encore songs on the dvd, they could put Metropolis last and use PMU as promotion. I kind of think by the time the dvd is out (May?), the promotion of ADToE will be over and the new album will take priority. A classic tune is good middle ground.
However, I'm not convinced there will be a promo released.

Also, I will be very disappointed if any song played at least once in the two nights will be left out. Performances were exceptional and I don't think releasing a 3CD live album would be a problem. PMU should take the place before the last song, that will be obviously Metropolis.

That might be a challenge when editing the videos. I'd bet one of the encores will be left out and I sure hope it's not PMU. My guess is they will release any song left out from the concert as bonus material.

I'm sure they can. Creative edits can go a long way. At the very least, it will be possible for the CD version, assuming there is one.

I disagree. PMU was far better than Metropolis mainly because of how the audience reacted to it though it is true that Metropolis was fantastic. Hopefully they will manage to include both but if not, PMU should be there at the end

My biggest concern over this DVD is that they give it the Van Halen "Live: Right Here, Right Now" treatment. I really don't want to be listening to audio from Night 1 while watching video from Night 2.

I doubt that would be the case, coming from DT. It was a lot more typical to edit videos like that back in those days before live videos/DVDs were as popular, and I also don't see DT as the type of band to edit it like that.

Funny you bring this up seeing as the exact DVD was mentioned by myself earlier in this thread or possibly a different thread. That DVD is horrible and you shouldn't worry about it too much.
