Sigz Presents: SONGS AGAINST HUMANITY
This roulette will be based off of the card game Cards Against Humanity (https://cardsagainsthumanity.com/). For those of you not familiar with it:
What is Cards Against Humanity?
Cards Against Humanity is a party game for horrible people.
Unlike most of the party games you've played before, Cards Against Humanity is as despicable and awkward as you and your friends.
The game is simple. Each round, one player asks a question from a Black Card, and everyone else answers with their funniest White Card.
Rules:
So how will the roulette work? I went through the CAH deck and picked out all the black cards that I felt would make good prompts for a song roulette. Each round, I'll pick one of these cards, and that will be the rounds theme. Players will submit a song that they feel best fulfills the prompt or question.
There will be 6 primary rounds and 1 final round featuring the top two players from the main rounds. There will also be a bonus round that will run concurrently the rest of the roulette, but more on that later.
Scoring:
Relevance to card - 4 points
Quality of song - 4 points
Fudge factor - ±2 points
The fudge factor is there if I feel that you deserve bonus points for a particularly unique or great selection or for previously agreed upon sexual favors. I also reserve the right to subtract points, primarily for time limit violations or if you used to much teeth. See note 4 for time limit info. The fudge factor really won't be coming up much however, so consider the 'max' score to be 8.
Additional Notes:
1) Some of the cards have a single fill in the blank, in which case you have to tell me what you want your 'blank' to be, based off of your song. It could just be the song title, or you could do something like "the song Kiss From a Rose by Seal', or you could even just use a memorable line from the song if you feel it works. I'm pretty flexible.
2) A few of the cards have more than one blank, in which case I'll explain the precise rules if it comes out.
3) If you want to see the cards, the entire deck is available on PDF here (https://s3.amazonaws.com/cah/CAH_MainGame.pdf). Scroll down until you see the black cards. Not all of those are possible choices (most of them aren't actually), but you'll get the idea.
4) I'll place the time limit at 6 minutes. Note that you can submit a song longer than this, but you will be risking a negative fudge factor. If I really don't like it, you will probably get docked a point or two. At the same time, if I end up loving the song, I'll probably give you bonus points for taking the risk.
5) I prefer submissions as spotify links first, youtube links second, everything else last.

So I've gotten 8 people wanting to play so far, which is the max I want to run with. If more people want to play, I'll change over and do a random draft or something. I'll give it another day. I also have a pretty good idea of how things are going to run, so I'll post that soon. For now, there's a hint in this post.

ClairvoyantCat: Martin Greche - I Am Chromosome
Holy fucking awesome. It was pretty relevant to the topic, and musically it was absolutely killer. Great interplay between metal, atmospheric piano, and the distorted electronics really added to it as well. Definitely going to have to check this album out in full.

Interesting style. The vocals, synths, and guitar tone gave off kind of a standard-fare prog metal vibe, but the drums and songwriting we a bit different. Either way though, I dug the song, though the production was a little off putting. The solo at the end was probably my favorite part. I'm not sure how relevant it really was however.

Definitely nailed the topic, but the music didn't do a ton for me. It wasn't bad by any means, and I really liked the female backing vocals actually. However, all this doesn't matter cause you didn't like Shpongle, so you get -2 points.

Relevance will be scored based on whether my appreciation of the song increased over time. Going along with this, there will be no time limit for the bonus round. LieLow: Sarah Fimm - Virus
I've actually listened to Nexus once I think. I enjoyed it, but nothing really stuck with me. Virus is kind of the same way. On paper the dark electronics and brooding female vocals should be a grand slam for me, but it just doesn't quite resonate with me the way I'd expect it to. That said, it definitely hit the topic, and the song was still really good.

Rich: Amorphis - Perkele (The God of Fire)
I've listened to Amorphis before, but much like Sarah Fimm, nothing really stuck with me. Unlike Sarah Fimm however, this song blew me away. Great riffs, solid chorus, and absolutely crushing growls. I mean, god damn. The singer's clean voice was quite impressive as well. I've already spun the rest of Eclipse once or twice, and really enjoyed it overall. The music was heavy as fuck though not exceedingly dark per se, however the lyrics were definitely topical. Great pick all around.

Lonestar: Marillion - Hotel Hobbies
I've actually heard Marillion before - back in the day Jen and I did a simulisten of Misplaced Childhood (which I loved at the time). However, I never really fully absorbed MC afterwards and never checked out Marillion past that, so it was cool to come back to them, especially considering how much my tastes have changed in the interim. Musically it was really good, and the musicianship itself was fantastic. Rothery's guitar work once again really rung with me, and I loved Trewavas's bassline. However, I'm not a huge fan of Fish's voice if I'm being honest, and the synth production, as with a lot of music of this style, bugs me. That said, it was still a fantastic song. The lyrics, however, completely blew me away. It's a shame their delivery didn't resonate with me as much but still, god damn.

jingle.boy: Frameshift - This is Gonna Hurt
Weird song. It has a prog/power metal feel (mainly due to the vocals I think), but with a ton of electronics and a middle eastern flair. Musically it was really awesome - heavy, electronic, and the background piano added a ton to it. My main issue with it was actually the vocals. The singer was very talented, but I'm not a huge fan of the 'operatic' metal singer archetype overall.

Round 3 Results! (finally)
This was a weird round, and I'm still not sure how I feel about the scores in the end. Alas, the show must go on. As a side note, 'noises/voices inside heads' seemed to be a very common theme, with two song titles and related lyrics in a few other songs.
Nekov: Von Hertzen Brothers - Voices in Our Head
AWESOME song. The first half was pretty catchy and groovy, but then the second part came out of nowhere and totally blew me away. Especially when the main melody from the first part kicked back in. I'd never even heard of these guys, but I definitely have to check them out now.

Hmm, not really my bag honestly. It wasn't a bad song by any means - I wouldn't change the station if it came on the radio, but I can't really see myself ever voluntarily putting it on. Partly it was the rather thin production, and part of it was just the kind of plodding jam band vibe it gave off.

Man, this was so far away from what I would have expected from you I have no idea what to say :lol Either way, it was a really fun song, and like you said I can definitely see how it would be awesome live, especially the sing-alongish end. The lyrics didn't seem to be very relevant, but the music was so goddamned groovy it doesn't matter.

Thanks for the props on my review, I was pretty proud of that one myself. The whole thing is available for free on their bandcamp page, and I'm in the process of an interview with them right now, should be up on Nem's zine within a few weeks. Lonestar: Silent Memorial - TV World
When I saw the topic, I was actually expecting some kind of prog/power/speed metal type deal, so this wasn't too far off from what I had in mind. Musically it was pretty cool, and this isn't really the kind of stuff I normally go for anymore. As with the other prog metalish stuff I've gotten this roulette, the vocals were kind of offputting - I just don't dig that operatic metal singing like I used to. However, the chorus was really good, and there were some great riffs throughout the song. I actually dug the solo section at the end too.

For starters, I lol'd heartily at the song title, it was an absolutely perfect choice. Like with the last song, it was pretty much along the lines of what was in my mind with the theme. Musically however, it didn't do a whole lot for me. It wasn't a bad song by any means, but to be honest I'm not really inclined to check them out further, at least based on this song.

I've heard a few Foxy Shazam songs before, but never really got into them. This song was probably the best I've heard so far, but at the same time, it didn't really blow me away despite being a ton of fun.

LieLow: Gogol Bordello - Supertheory of Supereverything
I was on the fence about accepting this because I've heard a decent amount of Gogol Bordello (well, one album). But, I didn't know the song or album at all, so whatevs. As for the song, it was a ton of fun - definitely the kind of stuff I've been digging a lot in this summer. I wasn't sure about how topical it was, but between the pseudo-science lyrics and the electronic bits I'd say it's pretty relevant. Good submission :tup

Ravenheart: Mind.in.a.box - Amnesia
I'm heard a few songs of theirs, but never really got into them a ton despite sounding like that would be right up my alley. This particular song was kind of the same - I enjoyed it, and stylistically it was totally my jam, but it wasn't something that really got any hooks in. Musically it was definitely appropriate to the theme, however.

jingle.boy: Ayreon - Eyes of Time
I've heard The Human Equation before, and with a few exceptions I didn't really dig it. This particular song was kind of the same - something about the mix of operatic metal male vocals and female voices really doesn't sit right with me. It's not something I'd usually have a huge problem with, but I feel like it's just a result of Ayreon's songwriting style. Thematically though, it definitely fits. Also, I dug the synth runs and guitar solo in the last minute or so. Overall however, not really my kinda thing.

Well, it was only a matter of time before you didn't send something that rocked my socks off. I've never really heard Tori Amos besides her cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit (which is actually quite good), but this really did not sit with me at all :/ Between the kind of grating countryish vocals and the Points for the relevant submission however.

Lonestar: Aerosmith - Big Ten Inch Record
lololololol. I'm not really a big Aerosmith fan (SHOCKING) but it's not terrible or anything. It fits in with the theme pretty - I definitely see it as the kind of song I'd enjoy at a bar or party as background music to get my curvacious hips a rockin'. On a personal note, whenever I need to liven up a party I just wip out my 4 inch minidisc, but maybe that's just me.

Nekov: Illegal Aliens - Ratrace
Hmm, this was an odd song for me; I felt like I should have enjoyed it far more than I actually did. Something about the production was a major turnoff for me - it felt like a backing track for a instructional guitar DVD or something. The songwriting wasn't too bad by any means, and I LOVED the drumming (not surprising, considering it's Minnemann). Topically, it felt too proggy and odd to be really party appropriate. All in all though, I can't really score this too highly :/

Jingle.Boy: Prince - Let's Go Crazy
Prince is one of those artists who I'm familiar with despite not being able to name a single song of his. Squiggly line name or no, the song was quite good. It's not really the kind of thing I see myself putting on regularly, but it would be perfect in a bar/jukebox to me - it was very similar to Lonestar's submission in that way. I enjoyed the song quite a bit more however and, given the choice between the two on a jukebox, would definitely take this one.

I actually used to be a really big fan of The Who when I was a wee lad, but for whatever reason never heard their debut album, so I accepted this song. It was a good song though. Much like previous songs, not really something I'd listen to on my own, but still very fitting for the theme.

Anyways, I'd actually totally forgotten about them, and this song was a great submission. Rockin, technical but not to the point of losing the groove, and quite heavy but not inaccessibly so (which is important for the theme).

LieLow: A Great Big Pile of Leaves - Alligator Bop
I've heard them pimped around, but never actually listened. This was really good. Quite a bit different from the above submissions - certainly more 'indie' or somesuch. I don't really have a whole lot to say about the song - it didn't grab me a ton, but I still really enjoyed it. I like the clean guitar melodies and horns especially. As for the topic, I can definitely see this going well at a smaller house party or less crowded bar, so thumbs up on that front.

And yes, I know my roulette is super/absurd/unforgivably late. As you may or may not have noticed, I haven't been around at all because I've basically been working 24/7. Fortunately I have the weekend off finally, so it will get done. Not that anyone cares anymore.
I think the reason no one cares, is because after saying 2 or 3 times you'll post results, and then don't ... you give off the impression that you don't care. Which is fine. If you don't care, then we won't either.
