Title: How do you sing along to songs?
Post by: Implode on July 16, 2012, 07:38:01 AM
Do you try to match the singer's octave? Or do you sing in your own comfortable range? Do you sing the main line? Harmonies? Make up your own harmonies? And for guys, if there's a female singer, do you try to sing along in the same octave with falsetto?  :lol

For me, I try to sing with the main singer until I physically can't keep up. I've really increased my range since listening to DT, though my range still sucks. I always sing in my car where no one can hear me screeching like a banshee. I'll switch between vocal lines on a whim and sometimes make up my own harmonies for certain songs.

Basically this, though I make up my own harmonies more often than not. It's actually rather rare that I sing along to longer passages as they are.

I'll sign along in the correct octave. If it goes above my range, I'll usually switch to whistling along instead. :lol But it's not the same to me to sing an octave lower, so I generally avoid that.

In the case of harmonies vs main line, it depends entirely on the song and my mood. Sometimes I just want to try a particular vocal part / harmony for the hell of it, or because it happens to be in a better range for me than the other parts.

I don't listen to much with female vocals (at least not out loud) so that's not a problem. My falsetto is non existent these days, so I couldn't do that anyway. :(

I am utterly unable to reproduce notes the way they are supposed to be so I just try my best to not be horribly off.

I love singing the harmonies.  They are so much harder in my book.  Plus, I don't have a lead singer voice but I do well with harmonies.

I can't sing for shit, so I try to just sing along softly to the lead melody. Sometimes it comes off as lead, sometimes some horrible harmony. When I listen to Opeth-growl I just try to find a decent melody for the lead.

When I sing it's too loud for me to hear. I just belt it out though.

If it's harsh vocals I do a rough Hetfield like voice.

For me the Nicky Spanjaards approach works best.

Fuck that. I got my timing down.

Id say listening to DT has helped me there.

Watching me sing to music is like watching a badly dubbed kung fu movie. Words and timing are all fucked up. Like this...

No, I usually use a lower octave, because I have quite low singing voice. I can sing Wait for Sleep correctly, but there my range ends. I try sometimes to sing harmonies, if they're simple. Sometimes I sing only the harmony, when I'm singing only by myself. Making own harmonies is a bit hard, but I've done that also.

And no, I don't sing from falsetto, if the vocalist is woman, because it sounds terrible. Or if I do that, I do it as a joke (I've gotten good score from SingStar even that way).

And if I try to growl, it sounds pathetic. If I do harsh vocals, I roar. But I mostly do clean vocals.

Well the important part is that we're all having fun.  :lol

That's true.

I sing along in the correct octave, let's say I try my best for it.  :lol

In that matter, many DT songs are hard to keep up. When I go high I even fear of myself.  :rollin It sometimes sounds completely scary. Singing DT songs makes me appreciate JLB's voice even more.

And,

I try to sing in the singer's octave, usually.  This is rarely a good thing, as my range is just below the tenors to whom I usually listen. :lol  I'll do harmonies if they're more comfortable for my range.

I sing everything in the highest possible falsetto I can.

Seriously though, I change it up randomly. Sometimes I sing the same thing the singer does, and if that gets boring, I'll either sing their harmonies or I'll make up my own. If it's a female singer, I'll either belt it in a higher range (not falsetto) or I'll sing a lower harmony. If it's Devin Townsend, I usually just try to sing until he screams, then I give up and cry.

I usually only sing along in the car where no one can hear me or in a sort of hushed tone in the shower. I generally try and match the singer (including female ones  :lol ) Sometimes I try singing a different harmony or in the case of some DT songs if I'm listening to the studio version I sometimes try and sing a live version. For example, I usually sing the LATM version of Metropolis. If I ever forget or don't know the words I just resort to JLB style enunciation but worse  :lol Also on that note I can't help but sing misheard lyrics sometimes, see 'buy a pen, I've a wank 'un, baby sauna in my name!' I have also got into a bad habit of doing the JLB score thing 'whaaaam alive again....whaaaam invincible...whaa feel stronger'

I try and sing in the same octave, though for some DT or Rush songs I'll just give up because its really damn difficult.  Growling works for me on good days.  And I do all of this in the car and ignoring the fact that everyone can see me screaming along to something.

I sing pretty much everything in the singer's octave, but I've sung harmonies all my life in choirs/small groups etc, so I am always trying out new harmonies that don't exist in the songs.  And typically if my wife is singing along with something, she is on the melody and I don't want to double it (or triple it in this case).

I lost my falsetto voice sometime in high school so I've really had to work on the range of my head voice over the years.  I can reach most of what male singers do, but I often have to go an octave down on female leads and the highest male leads.

I predominantly stay in the singer's octave, but if the notes are too low for me to reach I'll go up an octave.  Female vocals are no problem for me, obviously, even though my normal range is more alto/tenor.

This. Except I really don't give a fuck if anyone hears me because I know I can't sing worth shit but it feels good so fuck yews, I'm walkin' here. I'll be at work and go into the back of the kitchen and they always have good music playing back there and whenever I'm feeling it I'll bust out into a zany dance and start singing and then the Chef will look at me and say "George, are you stoned at work?" and I'll say "If I was stoned I would be eating all this fucking awesome food" and then he tells me to get the fuck out of his kitchen and I do.

I can go really low, but have no highness whatsoever, so I tend to sing things in a lower octave.

I have this high head voice that I can use to belt out high notes like LaBrie's F# or Mercury's Bb or other high notes.

It doesn't sound good, but I don't care.

I can't do rougher or harsh vocals at all, so everything is clean when I sing it.
