Title: Enslaved
Post by: adace on July 10, 2012, 01:58:07 PM
Can't believe no one made a thread for this amazing band. The new album will be called "Riitiir" and it'll be out on Oct. 2. Can't wait for this!!!

Loved these guys since the first time I heard Below The Lights. Mellotron and black metal, man, I was SOLD.

Great group. A friend of mine who is both a bassist and music elitist (despises DT of course) turned me on to Enslaved a few years ago.

Yeah, I'm pumped for this.  It's always interesting to hear where this band is going -- they're like a model for how to evolve with grace and purpose.

Just popping in to say that I saw these dudes last week and they put on an awesome show! Also, the new album and Vertebrae are my favorites from them.

RIITIIR is totally colossal and amazing. i hadn't listened to Enslaved since Below the Lights was released (!), so the alterations in style and production were surprising and awesome for me.

RIITIIR was good, but I never listened to it as much as I wanted to. Hopefully this one is also on that level. I wasn't too wowed by this song, but I'm not going to write it off

This review has me so stoked!

On a side note, I was recently listening to the debut album Vikingligr Veldi and it's by far my favorite of their pre-Isa period. Pure black metal with subtle hints of the progressive tendencies that were later to come. Great stuff!

I liked some songs off Riitir and I usually find hard to love bands using mostly growls in their songs, but after this preview I'm excited for the album! I'm searching for the full version of the song to see how it ends, but even with the cut the song is already beautiful

all i've been listening to is Enslaved since that song was posted! i never took the chance to dive into their discography until now (outside of RIITIIR and Below the Lights when they came out – they blew me away!), and i'm impressed how far back you can go to get the same brilliance before it 'devolves' into pure second wave black metal. i'm sure the new album is as solid as the last few have been!

I'm going to have to give it a more careful listen, and then some, but I enjoyed my first quite a bit. Not sure there are any tracks here which have the strength of... say Roots of the Mountain, but that's okay

Thousands Years of Rain is great, but I'm not sure I like it any more than Building With Fire. Really consistent album overall, too.
Title: Re: Enslaved
Post by: LordCost on April 02, 2015, 08:48:38 PM
It's incredible how every song it's perfectly written considering their lenght! Two months ago I didn't have any hype about this album and now it will be probably the best album of the year unless my favourite bands put out other masterpieces like this. Maybe the transition at 6:00 in Nauthir Bleeding is the only little problem in the songwriting, however is my favourite off the record; an original song with a lot of inspired sections and two super epic moments.
Trying to do a ranking after 4 listens of every song I'd say:
Nauthir Bleeding
Thurisaz Dreaming
In Times
One Thousand Years Of Rain
Building With Fire
Daylight
Title: Re: Enslaved

Yeah, this album is just great all around. And wtf, Daylight might just be my favourite song on the record. DAT GUITAR SOLO

I put all the other favourite songs of the people in this thread in the last places ;D They are all perfect to me, but the first three of my ranking are the ones with my favourite sections, and from 1st to 6th there's a small difference

Bringing this one back from April. The new (or, not so new now) album is still one of my favorites of the year. Sooo good.

Hoping to see them live this winter in support of BTBAM (BTBAM would be supporting them, if I had my way).

i basically said yolo and ordered Axioma with my next album batch since you apparently can't go wrong with Enslaved so why not get the album right before what i have

also it was cheap as hell, like less than $6

Finally getting around to checking this band out, been on my radar for years. So I bought Vertebrae for £2.99 (goddamn bargain) and I'm really enjoying it on first spin. Will get their latest two next I think.

Is their latest release generally regarded as their best?

I recommend working your way chronologically from Vertebrae onwards, Axioma Ethica Odini is my favourite Enslaved album and RIITIIR is very good as well. I wasn't that hot for In Times myself, but people seem to dig it in general.

Cheers dude, think I might do that. Were the pre Vertebrae albums more straight up black metal? Was that the album they started to develop their sound?

I'm not an expert on their pre-Vertebrae material, but they started to get more progressive around Monumension I think. People seem to describe that record as "weird" from a black metal perspective.

That is an accurate description.  They started to incorporate progressive elements with Monumension, and by the time Vertebrae came out it was well incorporated.

The new single is out.  In Times was my favorite album of 2015.  On first listen, I like this new single even better.  It's even more progressive, has symphonic elements, and still maintains a dry Nordic aggressiveness.  Beautifully contrasting music.

I like Enslaved. When I'm in the mood they really hit my spots but it is rare I put em on, for some reason. I find quite a bit of their later stuff a little disjointed, I think.

Saw them in a tiny place in London on the Axioma tour and they were absolutely fucking amazing, though.

This new one is great so far.

I've only just finished giving it a first listen. It's definitely interesting but I need more listens. I could say the same for a lot of 2017 albums, loads of stuf that probably needs more listens but there haven't been many albums that have grabbed me by the balls and not let go!

So I'm on a bit of an Enslaved kick as I'm seeing them support Opeth next week. On top of that their new album is most excellent so I'm enjoying them quite a lot.

I'd previously only downloaded In Times and Vertebrae. In Times is easily my favourite of those two. Today, however, I downloaded Axioma Ethica Odini, E (which I'd already given a few listens on Spotify), Isa, RIITIIR and RUUN. All of these albums have plenty that I dug on first listen (actually second for RIITIIR as I did sample it earlier this year, at some point). I love this bands take on progressive black metal.

I have no idea what they are likely to play live next week, or what are considered fan favourites. I'm just happy absorbing all this awesomeness ready to see what they bust out. Given it's a support slot and they have a new album out, I guess it'll be at least 50% stuff from E. I'm more than happy with that though.

Anyone else seeing them this year? Or seen them in the past?

A very late response, but I've seen them that year, in a venue that doesn't exist anymore, in a city I no longer live in. Corona killing concerts made me reminisce about all sorts of things, and one of the things was how on point, mature, crushing Enslaved sounded and how much I'd love to see them again.

Hey, need advice to get into Enslaved.

I’m a big fan of Insomnium and since they are touring with them, I’d rather enjoy Enslaved show as well and prepare for it. I’ve listen to their recent stuff and I think it’s okay but I don’t connect that much with the music. Maybe it’s just that I haven’t heard them enough. On the extreme metal side, I usually enjoy melodic/melancholic vibe such as Insomnium, pain of salvation, an abstract illusion, kardashev, clouds, swallow the sun to name a few. Never really got into black metal much though (more death).

Anyway, any advice on how to get into them and where to start would be greatly appreciated. They have such a huge discography and the ratings on internet are very good on all those albums.

I know I started with Vertebrae, Axioma Ethica Odini and In Times, and I think that was just before E came out.

They are a super consistent band, but I know In Times and E were really the first two to grab me. They are definitely progressive black metal, and they have clean vocals in the mix as well.

To be honest they probably started experimenting and becoming more progressive from Monumension onwards. Everything before that is more Viking themed black metal, although with obvious progressive bits as well.

I don't think you can really go wrong with anything from Monumension onwards, but I think my picks to start with would be Below the Lights, Riitiir, In Times or E.

Oh, also I mentioned earlier in the thread but there is a cool little docuseries on YouTube that goes through the bands history, it's pretty cool.

Luke gave a great overview already...I'll just add a couple of my own thoughts...

I am probably not as into E as Luke...although I admit for some reason I haven't spent a ton of time with it. Of the more recent period, I particularly enjoy Axioma Ethica Odini and In Times.

But yes, Monumension is where they started getting "weird" (in a good way! ). One could argue the previous album, Mardraum was showing some signs already  ;) There's plenty to digest in that period, and most of it is very cool/interesting. In that early-to-mid 2000 run, I have a soft spot for Isa but, again, it's all good.

As Luke says, before Monumension/Mardraum, it really was Viking themed black metal, but I think they were already doing it their own way. I always enjoyed Frost, and if you want an example of an ambitious tune from that earlier period, try the opener of the Eld album, "793 (Slaget om Lindisfarne)", over sixteen minutes of truly epic stuff. Following that, the Blodhemn album is one of their most aggressive...almost thrashy at times.

Let us know how your exploration goes!

All right thanks! I usually don’t connect that much with aggressive or trashy music. I’m more into emotional/melancholic feeling music but if the music is good, it is good no matter the style and I’ll give those albums a try:) hope it does work and I’ll let you know for sure

I really need to start that Enslaved discography thread I've been meaning to do for about a year now.

Nick_z gave a great overview, but ultimately you can't go wrong with any of their albums and each album is unique, with its own style.
You want old school viking metal? Try Frost.
You want something more quirky and avant-garde leaning? Try Monumension.
You want straight up Melodic Black Metal? Try Isa.
You want to know what Pink Floyd would sound like if they were black metal? Try Vertebrae.
You want progressive metal? RIITIIR.
Maybe post rock black metal? In Times.

You get the point 😁

Puppies and Luke, you should go for a combined effort, like Lethean and Litho are doing for Katatonia :)

It’s time for a proper Enslaved revisit!

I don't know nearly enough about the band to be honest. I suppose I learnt more watching that documentary series last year. I'd have to watch again and take notes  :lol

I'm starting to think the 6 album run of Below the Lights, Isa, Ruun, Vertebrae, Axioma Ethica Odini, and RIITIIR might be one of, if not the best 6 album runs in music history.

Puppies - I can sense things are ripe for that Enslaved discog thread  ;)

As great as this run is, I'd say I prefer Ruun, Vertebrae, Axioma Ethica Odini, RIITIIR, In Times, E personally. They do possibly have the best back catalogue in metal, although I'd argue Mastodon is well up there.

Perhaps. I will need to do some preliminary work; another quick discography run through, a little research, and collect my thoughts on it all. Problem is, I've been busier than ever at work the last several months and I don't see it slowing down any time soon.

I've started compiling everything I need to do the Enslaved Discography Thread. It's going to take a little time, but I'm shooting for November to start this. I could probably have it all ready by September, but I'll be out of town for the whole month of October with no time to do updates, so I don't really want to leave it hanging for a month
