The record is not in any music stores as of yet, but if you would like a physical CD, we can make it happen. "

thank you very much Phoenix87x. My favorite part on the album is the vocal melody in that song "but when my dreams cross with reality, i'm free oohhhh ohhh ...etc ".

The more I listen to the last track "The Dream", it reminds me a lot of "A Change Of Seasons' in the way its all put together. 3 songs into this epic masterpiece, so melodic. The solo at the end,  I would compare it to "The Razors Edge"

johnny, where did you hear of them? Are you connected to them in any way?

They are all friends of mine for about 4 years now.

I have a funny story in how I first met them. Back in 2007 downtown Toronto at the HMV Dream Theater in store autograph session, the guitar player Sam I first met. At the time I didn't know he played guitar or was in a band. He was 16 at the time. He liked my Amazing Journey t shirt I had on, lol.

2 years later at the Molson Amplitheater after the Dream Theater, they were handing out business cards for the band and they said hey we've seen you before, lol. The next day, I went on to their myspace and checked out their music which is that 4 song demo you see on itunes. I was definitely impressed. A few weeks later they had a gig at the Opera House in Toronto as part of the openers for EDGUY.

When I saw them on stage and watched Sam playing, my jaw dropped. He's my favorite guitar player everr, yeah he's my friend but I feel that way. They have had other opening gigs in Toronto and a few in Montreal for Symphony X, Sonata Artica, Fair To Midland. They were slated to be the opener in Toronto and Montreal for James LaBrie Static Impulse tour that didn't happen of course.

They currently are not on any major label. Everything they are doing is on their own. As they can gain more experience they'll even get better as writers and musicians since they are in their early 20's.

Good stuff, man.

Wanted to add that RUSH is the biggest influence in the band. Never met more diehard RUSH fans than these guys.

They have covered "Xanadu", "Entre Nous" (videos are on youtube), "La Villa Strangiato",  "2112".

No offence to the music, which I personally enjoy quite a bit, but this has been a little bit over the top. The group mentality aspect of DTF has taken over. I've never been one for circle jerks, but the pressure on this thread is too overwhelming.

With that being said, it is praiseworthy music.

Listened to the iTunes clips and the music is worthy of all the praise that's given here.

The vocals are definitely the weakest link. It's the only thing stopping me from buying this. Very plain and boring vocals. There are probably a thousand amazing singers in Toronto. Go find one who is worthy of this talented band.

... but remember, I do think the music and songs are frigging stellar.

Hey guys,

I'm the drummer from Pyramid Theorem and Johnny has been keeping me up to date with all that's been going on in the forum.  I only found it necessary to create an account and thank you all personally.  First of all, thank you to Johnny for being like a brother to the band for the passed 3 years.  All your leg work may go unseen by some, but it does not go unappreciated.  Thanks Johnny!

And secondly, thank you to everyone on here who has taken the time to give us a listen, and for supporting us and buying our record.  It truly means the world to us that people are digging the record and speaking so highly about our music.  It is so gratifying and we are so appreciative of people like you guys who are digging the tunes and spreading the word about our band.

Once again, sorry to sound like a broken record, but thanks a lot and enjoy the record!!

That is correct.

The songs are quite good, Town In Ruins has some wicked guitar riffs and drum fills. Secret About Secrets is like Rush mixed with Ozzy. CD Baby or Amazon might be cheaper than iTunes.

For the newer fans of this band, its nice to see how much they have developed at this stage from the beginning.

Around the 5 minute mark in the final track, and going for about 5 minutes my devices are having trouble reading the disc and it skips around and is generally unlistenable. This happens both on my PC to which it was ripped and in my PS3. I'm going to clean the disc to see if that helps, but as it's brand new I don't think it will.

Hey guys,

Sorry to hear about your issues with the CD.  I myself have listened to 4 different copies of the record and haven't had an issue.  It may have been just a bad disc.  We don't have any copies remaining of our first run of discs, and we are waiting for the second run to come in.  They told me yesterday that it should be about a week or two.  If you want to add me on facebook or email us - pyramidtheorem@gmail.com - when the new discs arrive, we will send them out to you no questions asked.

Again, we are amazed at the amount of praise we are getting from you people on this forum!  Means we gotta be doing something right with our music HAHA!

Thanks again everyone and keep spreading the word!!

Well folks, here it is the official video of: "Another Day Slips By"

hope you guys enjoy the video  :metal

In the past few months the band has done a few gigs with another Canadian Prog band from Montreal, TRANSCEND and with the band 3 this past weekend. Pyramid Theorem is starting to write new songs for the next masterpiece hopefully out in 2013/2014.

Thanks again to all who have supported this band so far.  2012 was a memorable year for sure. :hefdaddy

It is a professional pressing (digipack), artwork was created by the drummer. The album credits are as you open up the CD. (I am in the credits, haha  :tup)

Wish they did include a liner booklet with the lyrics, but with no label and limited resources what can they do. They did have lots of CD's at the gig last weekend, so I would think you should be able to get a physical copy soon

Just having a listen on Apple Music. Sounds great so  but I'm not loving the vocals. Do they have a new singer? Doesn't sound like the same guy on Drive.

there is no lead singer in the band, it varies on certain tracks, Christian Di Mambro the bass player has more of a Zakk Wylde, Gregg Allman style of vocals, the keyboardist Stephan Di Mambro was the main vocalist in the beginning. Sam the guitarist likes to scream which is good. Vito the drummer can sing too, eventually it all blends in.

The beginning of that video for Drive pushes the limit on stereotypes. :D  Does anyone know when the cd will be released?  Also, yet another band that I will probably never get to see live.

The opening 80 seconds was a bit of a mess (imo), but the rest was really good.  The instrumentation in particular is exactly what I come to expect from you guys.

Great interview.  I agree that the song Outlaw for Good is kind of a mess, but still love the  playing.

How in the world are these guys not signed?  I had wanted the interview guy to ask how do you support yourself?  I guess the guys would have to have jobs and do this on the side.

yes, they haven't quit their normal jobs, haha. Far as I know they don't have a manager, it's more self promotion, playing in bars etc, hoping a few people show up.

Definitely they put their hearts into pursing their dreams, music business for any band is not easy.

Since I first seen this band perform in 2009, I have seen remarkable growth in all areas of musicianship including the vocals, it's not perfect or ideal, but it's a lot better and guys are showing more confidence

digging the 2nd track "Cliffhanger"

of course a bit different from the debut, songs more shorter, harder edge, melody driven

Title: Re: Pyramid Theorem
Post by: TAC on July 14, 2017, 08:22:13 AM
So I've listened to it once. But these are my first impressions.

I actually found it less melodic. Yes, it is definitely harder edged.

But it seems to lack the charm of the debut. It's like, yes, we can play our instruments really well.

The track that reminds me of the last album is Lifeline. I love when they channel Hemispheres era Rush, as they do in this track. Reminds me of something Ray Alder would sing.

yeah definitely more harder edge, I prefer the melodic sound like the debut album, but you try as a band to grow more in the song writing capabilities, the vocals are an improvement.

its tough the follow up on your previous work, so I give them credit in keeping it alive

I came across this amazing review from the band's Instagram account today written by a well respected metal journalist, Drew Masters who founded M.E.A.T. magazine (that's how I discovered Dream Theater in 1992 - M.E.A.T) so I wanted to post it here, awesome for the band to receive this recognition:

"12/16/2017 > "5/4 Fest, Day 1" featuring PYRAMID THEOREM + DEVOURING SATURN @ Rivoli, TO > "Seems the city that in the 1970's produced some of the Canada's, if not the world's, most acclaimed prog acts (Rush, Saga, FM, Zon, Max Webster) is at is again!… on this night I was only able to catch 2 bands, the first of which was DEVOURING SATURN… with 8 & 7 string guitars, a 6 string bass plus keys, this rising band's influences were primarily Meshuggah, Between The Buried And Me, and the like… while I found most of their tracks to be 'of the moment' tonally, I did however thoroughly enjoy the tracks extended lengths… the overall dynamics were terrific, with many tracks consisting of both fierce and soft moments… most of DS's material is 2-3 years old, but what stood out were tracks they've yet to release, so 2018 should be a move-forward year for this act… they were followed by the absolutely amazing PYRAMID THEORM, a magnificent 4-piece band that recently placed 2nd overall in the nationwide "WACKEN METAL BATTLE 2017" contest… opening with a virtually-note-and-drum-perfect rendition of Rush's "Limelight" (wow!), it set the stage for a bombastic wave of mind-blowing majestic original material to follow, most of which came from their latest CD "Element Of Surprise"… alongside me observing PT was renown studio mix engineer Richard Chycki (Rush, Dream Theater, Aerosmith) who cleverly observed that virtuoso guitarist SAM ERMELLINI was a kind of "prog Phil X" and I couldn't agree more!… I was glued to Sam's incredible effortless playing… I dare state that Sam is the most talented pure prog-rock guitarist this city has produced since the 70s' heyday of Lifeson, Mitchell, and Crichton... and along with his equally talented band mates — CHRISTIAN DI MAMBRO (bass/vocals); STEPHAN DI MAMBRO (keys); and VIC DEE (drums) — this act is pumping out simply incredible, high-energy new-age prog metal (and they're only going to get better!)… in the short time I've seen them, this band is growing rapidly... vocals, once their achilles, have tastefully evolved to match their instrumentation... and their performance is now ready for a worldwide stage... all this act needs is a (HUGE) break!… so while the world en masse is engrossed in hiphop, it's great to see that being exceptionally talented and progressive on rock instruments is still important, and even greater to see Toronto as one of the world leaders"

I've literally never heard of M.E.A.T. Magazine.

back in the early 90's across Canada there was a free metal mag at HMV stores which was awesome, album reviews, interviews, etc. One member on there Metal Tim Henderson carried that over to form Brave Words Bloody Knuckles. At the time M.E.A.T. was free but I believe Drew Masters pulled off publishing because he wanted to keep it free but it got to expensive to keep it going. Plus in the credits of the Awake CD you'll find his name there because of the features and interviews with James Labrie.

here's a link to what the mag looked liked https://goo.gl/images/EG6dt3

Never heard of Pyramid Theorem before but I'm listening to their new album, just about done. Impressive prog metal in a year that hasn't shown me much metal (let alone prog metal) to be excited by. There's a lot of modern DT influence I hear on this, especially from the latest DT record, I hear lots of JP in the guitar. But it has some really cool musical moments and solos. Very cool album.

Excellent album!  Sad that these guys cannot break away and go on a proper tour with a well known headliner like DT if they scaled back and had an opening band again or maybe Tour with Haken.

Johnny Super Fan, what is the current information on the band.  Are they with a label and If not why? They should be given the chance to make a decent living with this and see where it goes.  Of course they may already have decent jobs and are content with where they are.

Mixed by Richard Chycki. Isn't that the guy that butchered some recent Dream Theater albums?

Produced and Mixed by Richard Chycki, yes!

My first impression the kick drum mix would be too electronic not the natural bass sound which I prefer. After listening to the entire album today a few times this is not the case.

Thanks Mike. With the exception of Tornado from the previous album, the songs on this new album to me are so much better. They really concentrated on the song writing, lyrics etc. and the growth of this band is on another level. I'm happy they didn't throw the towel and quit.

I haven't seen them personally in 2 years. Far as I know they are still unsigned to a record label. I do know they have teamed up with Milestone Publicity an marketing company for recording artists based in Nashville. I think PT still manage themselves as a band. If it wasn't for this pandemic we are in, I'm sure this band would do some shows in the USA this fall.

So far the reaction on YouTube has been positive. I'm seeing comments around the world Russia, France, Sweden, Indonesia etc.

I did see a tweet from the promoter of Prog Power USA. Maybe on the next Prog Power event in Atlanta they may get an invite.

Hopefully the music will speak for itself and more prog metal fans will enjoy this album. I'm not very good at writing album reviews so I'll be keeping my eye out for reviews from Brave Words, etc.

I watch on YouTube a lot of the Sea Of Tranquility channel. Pete Pardo is awesome and if he ever did a review on this band it would be fantastic.

After loving the first album, I guess for whatever reason I didn't spend a ton of time with Element Of Surprise. I have it, and I'll have to revisit it.

Listening to Beyond The Exosphere and this is awesome. I'll have to wait until next month and get it with some birthday $$. But I am getting!

I personally hate whatever tuning they use on Freedom.

The opening track and Closer to the End are my favorites. The opener on the final track is interesting.

Finishing up Closer To The End.

Definitely my favorite so far. I love it!

I will have to wait until amazon music has this available in cd or digital.  I used to buy from iTunes, but the last 3 albums I bought would not completely download to my iTunes library.  Actually the titles downloaded, but some were blank for the music.

$7 on Bandcamp. Very easy to use. I can easily get whatever I buy from Bandcamp onto my iPod.

Wow, Intonate has a glorious ending.

Lots of Dream Theaterisms. And that's not a complaint.

Seems this drummer loves himself some Mike Portnoy.

TAC, since their debut album 8 years ago, what is your take on musically where they are today?

So what I really loved about their debut was their reverence to Hemispheres Era Rush. And while my initial comments about Elements Of Surprise were positive, I never revisited. Seemed like they tried to shorter songs, and honestly, I don't remember a thing about it.

After ONE listen to Beyond The Exosphere, the title track again nodded towards late 70's Rush.

I liked the songwriting on BtE. Especially Closer To the End, and while I did not care for the beginning of Freedom, it really turned into a cool song. And that outro to Intonate...WOW!

I like that there's some great melodic parts on this, but not at the expense of some longer passages, as EoS did.

But they went from straight out channeling Rush on the debut, to straight out channeling Dream Theater on BtE. I definitely look forward to another listen. I see they're on Bandcamp, so I'll order it on the next Bandcamp Friday.

Johnny, is this the same drummer?

Johnny, is this the same drummer?

Yes, same drummer Vito DeFranceso. Vito has some breakdown videos on YouTube.

The opening track Beyond The Exosphere in what I was thinking:

1) definitely Rush at the beginning 2) the vocal reminded me a lot of Kansas 3) Peart inspired drum solo 4) brief Kraftwerk vibe the keyboard part around 6 minutes 4) Opeth without the growls 5) Haken, DT and Rush for the ending.

Love the guitar tones throughout.

I remember being mostly disappointed with it. I may fire it up this afternoon while mowing the lawn (not a euphemism).

I enjoyed the videos they did for it but was disappointed by the brickwalling on the album. Makes it a tough listen.

“Beyond the Exosphere” deserves to be explored by yourself, but if you are into bands like SYMPHONY X or AYREON, you should take a seat and enjoy the ride!

Yeah, the mixing and mastering on this is really very good compared to the second album which I can't really listen to because of the super super loud mastering.  Would be awesome of the band would maybe re-mix and remaster that album because I think the material deserves to sound like BTE which is easily the best-sounding PT album
