Title: Nekov's Top 50 album thread v. Almost there
Post by: Nekov on June 30, 2012, 03:09:31 PM
50 - The Rolling Stones - Their Satanic Majesties Request

(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/d/df/Rolling_Stones_-_Their_Satanic_Majesties_Request_-_1967_Decca_Album_cover.jpg/220px-Rolling_Stones_-_Their_Satanic_Majesties_Request_-_1967_Decca_Album_cover.jpg)

This album deserves a place in my top 50 because it is the album that made me change the way I see the Rolling Stones. Even though they've become a band that knows how to make money with hits they used to do interesting stuff back in the 60s. This is a strange a psychodelic album that I would dare compare with Sargent Pepper's. The album contains interestng percusion, piano, string arrangements and organs and has a great vibe overall. Also, Paul McCartney and John Lennon did choruses in it.

Favorite songs: She's a Rainbow - Sing This All Together - 2000 Man

49 - Anathema - Weather Systems

This is a fairly recent addition in my top 50. I immediately loved this album after the first listen. It is so soothing, so warm but yet intense. The vocal melodies from Vinnie and Lee merge together beautifully backed perfectly by the rest of the band, creating powerful atmospheres. I don't think I'm able to name everything that's great in here because I would have to say everything but I do want to mention the string arrangements which work perfectly every single time.

Favorite songs: Untochable Pt.1 - Lightning Song - Sunlight

48 - The Police - Synchronicity

This album has everything that made The Police a great band. It's their most varied album as it mixes all the different genres they played in a very unique way, none of the songs sound like they are out of place. While it has a very low point in Mother that song still represents how bizarre these guys could get at times but aside from that particular song the rest of the album is flawless containing some of the bands best songs. The highlight for me here is Start Copeland and his simple yet amazing drumming.

Favorite songs: Synchronicity 2 - King of pain - Tea in the Sahara

Nice start, will follow. Weather Systems is an amazing album, but I must admit I'ver never heard the other two in full, only some tracks of them. On a side note; are you doing them in a complete random order, since you didn't number them or is it in order?

Following this shit. Weather Systems is great, as is the Rolling Stones record. I could never get into The Police, though.  :tup

Also,
are you doing them in a complete random order, since you didn't number them or is it in order?

I was assuming people here were smart and would understand that I would start from 50 and down but it seems I'm in the wrong place...

I'm kidding, I completley forgot to put the numbers :lolpalm: Fixed

Thanks for following guys. Did someone say more reviews? OK

47 - Haken - Aquarius

One of the finest prog metal albums out there. Excellent instrumentation, great handling of time signatures, fantastic song writing, it has everything a good album needs. Some people complain about the circus theme but I actually enjoy it since it gives the album a somewhat distinctive sound. There is also something very particular with this album which is that it has growls which don't bother me at all.

Favorite songs: Streams, Point of no return, Eternal Rain

46 - David Bowie - Earthling

This album contains a weird mix of electronic music and rock yet as usual with David Bowie is it very easy to listen. At some points it ranges close to drum & bass, at some points it makes you want to get off the chair and dance, and at some points it's just more calm and soothing, always with that magnificent and strange voice Bowie has. And of course you can also find the more depressing side that also very characteristic of his.

Favorite songs: Little Wonder - Dead Man Walking - Law (Eatrhlings on fire)

45 - Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells

Only 2 songs in the album both above 20 minutes, ideally for those of us that are prog nerds. I the first song is one of the greatest prog epics I have heard, starting with The Exorcist theme just to bring a little bit of terror even though it's quite a cheerful piece of music, then slowly mutating into this more somber kinda thing and then all the end run where he starts pilling up instruments playing the same melody, it's just wonderful. The second part doesn’t quite hold up to its predecessor but it’s still a very nice song.

Favorite songs: Considering there's only 2...

Great update, three fantastic albums, though I prefer other stuff by Bowie more. And of course Aquarius should be higher ;) :p

Even moar updates

44 - Pendragon - The Masquerade Overture

Neo-prog at its best. What I love most about Pendragon is how keyboard driven it is and how it manages to be prog but not necessarily complicated or super technical. In this album they are able to construct some very nice melodies followed by simplistic drum and bass lines which makes it very easy to follow while still maintaining it interesting. On other moments they can go to a more eclectic and changing kind of prog mixing calm with more all over the place stuff.

Favorite songs: As good as gold - Paintbox - Masters of illusion

43 - Sumo - After Chabon

"This album is in this list not only for its musical content but also because it brings some great memories. I was introduced to this band by my best friend when I was around 13 years old. At the time I was just getting to know him but eventually he would become one of the most important people in my life.
Music wise this band was similar to The Police in the sense that they mixed different music styles ranging from reggae, rock, pop, jazz, funk and even disco music. There’s also the fact that while being a band from Argentina, half their songs are sung in English which was very uncommon at the time they played. Even though the mix all this different genres their music is quite simple yet enjoyable. In this particular album you can find very calm and soothing songs, some upbeat tunes and even bagpipes."

Favorite songs: Crua Chan - Mañana en el Abasto - Hola Frank

42 - John Petrucci & Jordan Rudess - An evening with John Petrucci & Jordan Rudess

This album might be the most overlooked that any DT member has participated in probably because it’s very unusual to hear JP and JR doing this kind of thing. The first thing that amazed me about this album is the fact that they are able to play all this stuff without having a bass guitar or a drummer to keep the rhythm. The second thing that caught my attention was that they would use so much acoustic sound which is also the biggest reason why I like this record so much. They do throw in some of their overly technical playing in there because we all know they can’t help it but they manage to keep it nice. And they play an LTE tune so it’s an automatic win.

Favorite songs: Furia Taurina - Fife and Drum - State of Grace

Well, I know few of these six albums (two, to be exact, Aquarius and the JP/JR one), but I might rectify that in the near future. Problem is, I've got so much to check out...

Anyway, I really like your writeups. Keep it up!  :tup

Thanks for following guys. :D Since I'm on a row here let's just put up some more reviews

41 - Pablo El Enterrador - Pablo el Enterrador

The first prog album from my country I was able to enjoy. I found this by chance while on the internet and listened to it because I found the CD cover funny. One of the best musical accidents ever to occur to me. The whole album is very keyboard driven and centers on the melodies more than anything. It has all the elements one expects to find in a prog album.

Favorite songs: Carrousel de la vieja idiotez - Ilusion en siete octavos - La herencia de Pablo

40 - Von Hertzen Brother - Love Remains the Same

Another fairly recent addition to my list. I came upon this band a couple of months ago and I have been unable to stop listening to them. These guys are able to put prog elements into some very accessible kind of music and mainly doing more up-lifting kind of things. There are both long songs which take some time to build up and some short right to the point stuff, both equally enjoyable. What’s really great about them is the vocal melodies, the 3 brothers all sing and their voices mix together in an awesome way.

Favorite songs: Bring out the sun (So Alive) - Freedom fighter - Faded photographs

39 - Iron Maiden - Powerslave

My favorite Maiden album by far. The riffs are awesome, Bruce is awesome, everything about this album is awesome. I specially like how they worked the insturmental sections. I don’t think I have much more to say since you all probably heard this album before. If you haven’t then you should do it now.

Favorite songs: 2 minutes to midnight - Powerslave - Rime of the ancient mariner

On a side note, I just realized the entrance to the pyramid is right were Eddies dick should be. Disturbing.

38 - Florence + The Machine - Ceremonials

Another fairly recent addition to my top 50. I started listening to this record out of pure curiosity without knowing remotely what I was going to find. Lucky for me what I found was a great album filled with some very nice melodies, smart percussion and some of the most beautiful vocal melodies. I love the way the drums and the keys combine to generate great atmospheres that provide a perfect support to Florence’s beautiful voice which is what really drives all the songs.

Favorite songs: Shake it out - No light, no light - Heartlines

37 - Angra - Angels Cry

Talk about a mind blowing start. I was looking for power metal and the first thing I hear is this classical music perfectly executed which baffles me. And suddenly a metal riff comes in, the double bass soon joins and boom, my ass is being kicked by this awesome metal song. String arrangements everywhere, a singer that can reach really high notes, a powerful bass that holds the band together and two awesome guitar players. And if that wasn’t enough they manage to deliver prog beats here and there, execute some nice instrumentals and produce some uncommon up-lifting metal.

Favorite songs: Carry on - Time - Never understand

36 - Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun

Probably the most easy going PT album. Lots of acoustic guitars, peaceful melodies and those particular atmospheres which I never really know if I find them uplifting or depressing. I think that’s what captivates me more about this album, how these two somewhat opposite feelings can coexist at the same time so perfectly. The album also contains some more rockish tunes and some Crimsonian prog.

Favorite songs: Last chance to evacuate planet earth before it is recycled - The rest will flow - Where we would be

35 - Genesis - Selling England by the Pound

I find this album very interesting because it is a permanent contrast. It alternates one fantastic song with one with one of a lower caliber throughout the whole album all while delivering some beautiful happy melodies, well executed instrumentals, very good solos. It’s good prog all the way through. Peter Gabriel’s voice adds a lot to the instruments and Phil Collin’s drumming is quite unique.

Favorite songs: Dancing with the moonlight knight - Firth of fifth - The cinema show

34 - Metallica - Master of Puppets

:2metal: This is how you play thrash metal. Powerful yet interesting riffs, simple drumming but precisely what is needed, songs that develop and change all the time, instrumental areas and overall kickass metal. Metallica was able to deliver their best masterpiece very early in their career and unfortunately they weren’t able to keep up. But it would have been hard for them to come up with something better. The way everything flows and connects here, how a song like Master of Puppets can have so much power and yet contain a calmer and melodic instrumental, just to go back up with the hammering, all the great solos, it’s just so good.

Favorite songs: Master of Puppets - Battery - Orion

33 - The Flower Kings - Back in the World of Adventures

One of the most overlooked albums from The Flower Kings. I’ve seen people praising a lot of their latest work but I personally think that what they did in the beginning was better. To me this album sounds natural, the melodies flow nicely and easily connect with one another yet there’s also the more chaotic side of TFK which comes out on some songs but still sounds perfectly natural. And then there’s also the jazzy beats.  Both Roine and Tomas make an excellent job leading the songs.

Favorite songs: World of adventures - Theme for a hero - My cosmic lover

I never understood why the title track on MoP gets so much love.  it's not even in my top 3 songs on that album.  Disposable Heroes > Damage Inc. > Orion ~= Welcome Home (Sanitarium) > title track > Battery > Lepper Messiah >>> TTTSNB

but overall, what can you say.  it's one of the undisputed classics.  not arguing with the selection at all.

32 - Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle Earth

A turning point in Blind Guardian’s career as this album would signal a change in style for the band. A great mix of power metal and folk focused on the guitar melodies and accompanied by some very nice string arrangements and some of BGs best choruses. They managed to do a great mix between the main song and the shorter ones that were there to help the Tolkien concept. Some truly epic moments are present in here, powerful riffs, calm melodies and of course Hansi’s vocals which are unique as usual.

Favorite songs: Nightfall - Thorn - When sorrow sang

31 - Transatlantic - SMPTE

When 4 fantastic musicians gather the most likely outcome is a great album and this is the case right here. The epicness of the All of the above, the more rocker side presented in Mystery train and of course the touching We all need some light, a clear demonstration of how one album can mix very different moods and still be technical as hell. The amount of prog that can be found here is almost unbelievable and yet they manage to make it all very listenable.

Favorite songs: All of the above - Mystery train - My new world

30 - Patricio Rey y sus Redonditos de Ricota - Gulp

Another band from my country, in this case a one that has one of the biggest local fanbase. These guys marked an era during the 80s and part of the 90s with a somewhat dark atmosphere, cryptic lyrics, a very unique singer not because of his technicality but because he has a very particular voice. In spite of the more dark aspect of their music they were also able to throw some more upbeat bits and even whole songs that talk about love, but not often. They also use wind instruments in there to help create the atmospheres on which the singer would deliver his weird poetry.

Favorite songs: Yo no me cai del cielo - Te voy a atornillar - El infierno está encantador

The solution for that would be to listen to them  :)

Nice to see Blind Guardian :metal

Both Transatlantic and Blind Guardian rule, though these are not my favourite albums by these artists (Follow the Blind and Bridge Across Forever would hold these titles).  :metal

Don't know the last one.

I find I have to be in the right mood for BG.  This post inspired me to have a listen.  I like it plenty, just don't find much that floor's me about them too often.  Good album though.  Same goes for SMTPe.  I prefer Bridge Across Forever.  Don't know the third.

Enjoying the variety in your Top 50 so far.  I'm gonna have to go check the rest of the VH Brother album.

That's a killer BG album, a good mix between their old stuff and their newer style, with some of their best songs on that one.

29 - Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin 4

If someone asked me to define Rock & Roll I would tell that person to listen to this album. Powerful guitars, simple yet precise riffs, a mix of up bit with more calm and soothing songs, a great vocalist, an unbelievable drummer and fantastic guitar player. This album contains all the elements that make rock & roll my favorite music genre.

Favorite songs: Rock & roll - Stairway to heaven - The battle of Evermore

28 - Queen - The Works

Some might argue that this is not Queen’s best album and maybe it isn’t but it’s by far the one I enjoy the most. It’s more pop/hit oriented than any other album they did, it works a lot with keyboards and a more 80s sound but you can still find the classic rock Queen was known for, those great choruses that fit the songs perfectly, Brian May’s sweet melodies and of course Freddy who never got tired of showing the world he was the best singer to ever walk on this earth.

Favorite songs: Radio gaga - I want to break free - Hammer to fall

27 - Yes - Fragile

This is a bit of a weird album. It’s a mix of short songs that each portray the individual ability of each musician and then the longer songs in which everything comes together in a magical and impressive way. Yes is one of the few bands that is able to make some beautiful tunes while still being very technical in their approach to song writing, and were also able to work a lot with contrasts between crazier and calmer moods.

Favorite songs: Roundabout - South side of the sky - Heart of the sunrise

26 - Porcupine Tree - In Absentia

This album mixes perfectly the two sides of PT that I really enjoy. On one side it has some very beautiful tracks that manage to get a smile out of me every time, but there’s also the darker and more somber side of PT and a feeling of hopelessness. In between the battle of atmospheres there is some very well thought music, drum sections that are just genius, guitar riffs which fall right on the spot every time and some piano here and there that adds some touching moments.

Favorite songs: Blackest eyes - Trains - Collapse the light into earth

25 - Soda Stereo - Cancion Animal

I promise this is the last super unknown band in my list. Again a band from Argentina that I really like and the only one on this list I got to see live. The band started doing pop rock and new wave and became famous exploiting those two genres. Then they release this album which was a complete change of direction in their musical style. The songs were leaning towards alternative rock and for the most part stopped talking about love or at least did it but not very directly. The album is full of nice riffs, the drumming is quite clever and there are some string and piano arrangements that work really well.

Favorite songs: Cancion Animal - Hombre al agua - Cae el sol

24 - Liquid Tension Experiment - Liquid Tension Experiment 2

This record is absolute prog madness at its best. It has a powerful intensity that doesn’t get lost between the thousands of notes that are flying around all over the place. Tony Levin was the perfect choice because he provides a lot of contrast and top notch bass playing, and I don’t think I have to praise the other guys in here, they just pulled out their A games technically.

Favorite songs: Acid Rain - Another dimension - When the water breaks

23 - King Crimson - Discipline

A true prog masterpiece, King Crimson never fails to deliver. What I find most unique about this album is how they are able to create something that’s chaotic yet it’s perfectly structured. Among all the greatness the things that stand out the most are Fripp’s ability to make tons of notes fly around yet form nice melodies, Tony’s use of the Stick is just marvelous and of course Bill Brufford providing the perfect drumming each time.

Favorite songs: Frame by frame - The sheltering sky - Discipline

22 - Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy

I love each and every song on this album. The more powerful songs, the more calm and smooth ones like The rain song, and the more bizarre No Quarter, all mixed together and not a single one of them seems out of place. I think they got to their highest point here delivering some masterpieces.

Favorite songs: The song remains the same - Over the hills and far away - No Quarter

21 - Ayreon - Into the Electric Castle

All throughout, this album has a very sci-fi vibe to it which is very common in Ayreon albums but this one excels in this matter. The main driver is always the keyboard, generating both a great atmospheres but also leading with the melodies while the rest of the instruments follow the flow and complement the keyboard work. I find the flow of the album to be very good as it goes through different stages without losing any consistency. Both the smooth and the more crazy prog metal parts of the album are equally good.

Favorite songs: The decision tree - Across the rainbow bridge - Tower of hope

I'm with ya on 2 out of those 3 (don't know the KC album).

My only problems with HotH ... The Crunge.  They used the wrong vowel.  Cringe-worthy it is.  Same with D'yer Mak'er.  How that ever became a radio hit, I'll never know.

Into the Electric Castle is pretty much flawless.  Ayreon's 2nd best album.

20 - Transatlantic - Bridge Across Forever

My favorite TA album. The 3 epics are just that, epic songs that are very well written an executed. Each of the members is able to showcase their ability while maintaining a sense of group accomplishment. I think each song is a masterpiece, built up perfectly with all the prog elements that everyone likes, good riffs, interesting melodies, time signature changes and of course MP drumming which kicks ass.

Favorite songs: Duel with the devil - Suite Charlotte Pike - Stranger in your soul

19 - Rush - Permanent Waves

I find Rush album to be special because I find it way more accessible than anything they did before, more ear friendly and still it has all the things that make Rush the great band they are. The two longer songs work more in building a mood while the shorter ones are more centered in the riffs and rock much more. I feel that this album was the perfect set for what Moving Pictures would be.

Favorite songs: The spirit of radio - Jacob's ladder - Natural Science

18 - Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick

Well, I am absolutely amazed that Jethro Tull managed to do a 40 something minute song that doesn’t get boring and that has so many highs. It is just perfect the way the song develops along the way, it’s a fantastic journey full of awesome melodies. Ian’s singing and flute are just marvelous.

Favorite songs: Considering it's just 1 big song…

17 - Haken - Visions

This is the best prog metal album that has come out since 6DOIT. Haken is very good at creating melodies and handling time signature changes without being overly flashy. Everything seems to fall exactly in place all the time. From the start they show what you will experience for the next hour with Premonition and they don't dissapoint. There are several lead changes between the guitars and the keyboards that are subtle and perfectly complemented by each other, as are the transitions between the upbeat and downbeat parts of each song. The drumming while not flashy is very clever in the way the time signatures are handled and the fair distribution between the cymbal work and the rest of the percussion. Overall the album has a perfect merge of prog and metal, delivering just enough of each.

Favorite songs: Insomnia - The mind's eye - Visions

16 - Pink Floyd - Animals

Just 5 songs in this album, 3 of them absolute masterpieces and the other 2 are very simple songs that while not great themselves, do a very good job at setting up the mood for what is going to come and also to give a good and more quiet ending. I don’t know what to say about the 3 epics except that each of them is fabulous in its own way and while they are cohesive they are also very unique. The musicianship displayed it top notch and each song is an interesting adventure.

Favorite songs: Dogs - Pigs (Three different kinds) - Sheep

15 - Rush - Power Windows

I must thank DTF for helping me appreciate this album. It used to be my least favorite Rush album because to me it didn’t sound like Rush or at least not the Rush I liked but after seeing so many good comments about it I thought I had to re listen to it and eventually I found all the Rush that I like right here, just that it sounds a lot more 80s than anything else they have done. The great drums are here, the great bass lines are here, there are good solos and the overall musicianship is fantastic, but disguised.

Favorite songs: Manhattan Project - Marathon - Territories

Power Windows!  :metal

Can't fault your Rush picks so far. If I did a top 50 I would have to come up with  a system so that it wasn't just filled with DT, Rush, QR and KISS albums. I'd have to have some sort of limit fr each band, but then it's not a top 50 albums list. Hmm. Needs some thought.

Never really got PF and I've never listened to Animals. Tull isn't for me. Not a big prog fan really. And though I enjoy Star One Arjen doesn't interest me either.

Certainly not by Nick (1 and 2). I had 2 in my top 10, and 3 or 4 overall.

14 - Spock's Beard - Snow

It took me a couple of listens to appreciate this album but it was really worth it. I think Neal’s best work is when he works on a concept like he did here. It is a journey that starts with a magnificent overture that accurately provides us with a peek of what is coming next and from then on the album turns into a rollercoaster, going up and down, turning from full on prog to a more heavy side then back down to calmer and smoother songs. The only kinda negative comment I have about this album is that the first CD is way better than the second one.

Favorite songs: Stranger in a strange land - Devil's got my throat - Carie

13 - Pantera - Cowboys from Hell

This is the best non prog metal album in the history of metal. Dimebag delivers a wonderful guitar work and is able to balance to perfection between plain ol’ hammering or kickass guitar solos. Anselmo’s singing fits perfectly the tune of this band. The scream type of singing he does is usually a turn off for me but it’s just what Pantera needs. And then we have Vinny who to me has the best double bass work I’ve ever heard metalwise. He never overplays, he is very choosy with it and every time he hits the bass drum it feels like a bullet right to the chest. I can’t avoid headbanging every time I listen to this album.

Favorite songs: Cowboys from hell - Domination - The art of shredding

12 - Queen - A Kind of Magic

Who thought a soundtrack album could be this good? I personally feel that this album is underrated and I have to admit I’m biased since this was my first Queen album. I’m not sure what to say about it other than each of its tracks is fabulous with Freddy leading as usual and not disappointing with his vocal work while Brian May approaches the songs with very rock oriented riffs and some amazing solos and while it has some 80s touch to it, the album remains true to Queen.

Favorite songs: A kind of magic - Gimme the prize - Princes of the universe

11 - King Crimson - Red

Only 5 songs in this album and all of them are great. KC went with a much darker approach in this album than they were used to. Fripp’s guitar sounds almost metal for moments but he also delivers beautiful melodies in Fallen Angel. Brufford surprises a little because when the songs go towards the more heavy sound he just pounds his ride yet is able to remain true to his very proggy way of playing.
Paragraph aside for the closing song of the album as it is definitely a top 5 song of them. The way they are able to transition from this depressing and foggy atmosphere into a bizarre and almost unbearable section to come out with a perfectly executed jazz is something very hard to match.

Favorite songs: Red - Fallen Angel - Starless

I like Snow, don't love it. Could be that there was just too much of it to digest properly.

Queen- It's not a bad album, again, but I'm more a fan of the earlier stuff. This and Innuendo are the best of Queen's second half.

Pantera- Not a fan thanks to the vocalist.

KC- Again, not a fan.

10 - Dream Theater - Images and Words

There’s not much I can say about this album that you haven’t heard before. I liked this DT era a lot I think for two specific reasons. One is that JP used to play simpler riffs, not going so much towards the metal side and wasn’t still completely in love with his superhuman speed. Then there was Kevin who was on a lower level technically but his keyboard sections were very clever and he was very good at generating atmospheres to provide some contrast with the more complex elements the rest of the band brought into the mix. We also have James at his prime and MP playing fantastically well. I’ve seen people complain about the snare sound, but I don’t understand what is not to like about it.

Favorite songs: Surrounded - Metropolis Pt1 - Learning to live

9 - Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon

A friend of mine once told me he didn’t consider this a Pink Floyd album, he said he saw this as an album made by some aliens that came down to earth for some time and I think that’s as accurate as I can be. Everything about this album is so good, Gilmore just does a magnificent guitar work and provides touching vocals, Wright does a great job creating atmospheres with his keyboard and Waters and Mason just go along perfectly. The transition from song to song is very smooth and the variety of things in there is just sublime.

Favorite songs: The great gig in the sky - Us and them - Brain damage

Glad you guys are liking the list. Moar!

8 - Yes - Close to the Edge

This album has 3 epics which are very different from one another yet they work very well together. Close to the edge is the most prog oriented of the 3, being a rollercoaster of melodies and rhythms executed to perfection. And you and I is one of the most beautiful songs ever to exist, the lyrics are touching, the melodies are soothing and calm and I think it proves that prog can have feeling in spite of the technicality. At last there is Siberian Khatru, a song that took me some time to get used to because it is very moving and inviting to dance which I found odd for a lot of time yet now I can move to its beat

Favorite songs: 3 songs, I'll let you guess

7 - Frost* - Milliontown

This album hit me immediately when I listened to it for the first time. It’s a weird mix of prog with some pop sounding stuff and for moments it also sounds a little to the latest era of King Crimson. Obviously the main driver here is the keyboards which are not extremely technical yet deliver what is needed every single time. I also like the drum work a lot for the same reason, not super flashy but very clever and interesting. And the rest of the band just adapt to what each song requires because all of them are very special and unique in their own way. If Snowman wasn’t here this album would be perfect.

6 - Devin Townsend Project - Addicted

The first time I listened to this album I thought it was OK but nothing more and that happened for another 3 maybe 4 times. On the next listen I was :omg: as I couldn’t understand how I hadn’t realized what a masterpiece this album is before. The album is so heavy yet so easy on the ears and is so different from other heavy albums because it works more on a sonic and atmospheric level. There are two things that really stand out to me, the first being Devys vocals as they are amazing. His ability to vary from this high pitched screams to the more operatic lower tones is simply unique. The other thing that stands out is the drumming because it’s very intense all throughout the album and is the only instrument that while blending perfectly with the rest of the music still manages to do some very unique things.

Favorite songs: Supercrush! - The way home! - Numbered!

5 - Pink Floyd - Wish you were here

This album is the opposite to animals, it has the 2 epics opening and closing the album and the shorter songs in the middle however in this case the 5 songs are amazing. What makes this album very unique to me are Welcome to the Machine and Have a cigar, maybe not as good as the other songs in the album but a rarity in Pink Floyd’s catalog. The highlights as I said come with the first half of Shine on you crazy diamond which is a great melodic tune which has one of the most interesting intros in music. The other high point is the title track, an amazingly beautiful song that is just perfect.

Favorite songs: Shine on you crazy diamond (parts I-V) - Have a cigar - Wish you were here

4 - Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

Without a doubt this is DT's most experimental record and it has some of my personal favorites in it. The first disc is a nice mix of proginess and metal with some unusual elements and one of my least favorite songs (Sorry Disappear fans) and the second album is just an awesome suite, starting with a great overture and then becoming a musical roller coaster which I've never taken as a single song to be honest. I think every member displays some of their best work here while still being able to maintain a a very cohesive sound.

Favorite songs: Blind Faith - About to crash - Solitary shell

Not the biggest PF fan either but WYWH is a good album. This and Division Bell are the only albums I like by them.
Me too. Love WYWH, and Animals as well.

Nothing wrong with 6 D's though it's not on my list. The second disc drags it down. If it only consisted of the first disc, it would be one of my favorites.

I feel the same about it as well. I did mention it as an honourable mention in my own top 50 though, which means it only just missed a spot. The first disc is just too damn good.

3 - Rush - Moving Pictures

I like this album a lot because I think here is where Rush was able to best do prog that is quite easy on the ears and hot having to go for really long songs to achieve doing great prog, The camera eye being the obvious exception. The whole album contains great riffs from Alex, a fantastic bass work by Geddy and of course Neil's unbelievable drumming. The only "weak" point in the album for me is Vital signs, not because it's a bad song but because it's not as awesome as the other ones.

Favorite songs: Tom Sawyer - Red Barchetta - The camera eye

Great albums, especially Moving pictures. I also think that Vital signs is the weak point on the album, it really bothers me sometimes, I just don't like it. It might be the reason why I'd place five other Rush albums above Moving pictures...

2 - King Crimson - In The Court of the Crimson King

To this day I still ask myself how it's possible that someone came out with this album. It is so strange and unique that not even they were able to match themselves further on in their carrer. The craziness in 21st century schizoid man, the beautiful and peaceful I Talk to the wind and the more depressing and classical oriented Epitaph is simply mixing in the same place and yet matching perfectly to the whole tone of the album in general is fantastic. Moonchild is the weak song here, it starts out really good but then drags on for way too long. And of course I can't forget to mention the awesome ending with In the court of the crimson king which as well as the rest of the songs sets an initial mood, navigates it and then goes and changes it. Masterpiece from every single point of view

Favorite songs: I talk to the wind - Epitaph - In the court of the Crimson King

ITCHYCOCK is brilliant (yes, I like repeating jokes). The only reason it wasn;t higher on my own list (it was mid-40s I think) was because of Moonchild. I detest that song, otherwise it's a pretty flawless album.

Epitaph is one of my all-time favourite songs. Great pick! :)

That's one classic prog record. It's not my favorite, though, I pretty much fall asleep during the latter half of Moonchild, but everything else is brilliant. I love how even you admit that your 2nd favorite album of all time has a weak song.  ;D

Also, can we guess #1? I think I know what it is, but maybe it's better not to spoil it.  ;D

1 - Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a memory

One day while I was still in high school I went out for lunch and found a friend just sitting on the sidewalk right around the corner listening to his disc man (mp3 players were not a thing yet) so I just went to say hi and the guy told me ""Dude, you need to listen to this, it's awesome"" and he gave me the headphones. Home was playing. I asked him what this was and that's the first time I ever listened to DT however by that time I was mostly into power and heavy metal so I was not interested in what I heard. A couple weeks later this same friend who was really trying to get me into DT made me listen to TGP, PMU and the mirror. Now those songs were really up my alley so I decided that I should start getting into this band a little more. After listening to some more of their songs, mostly metal I was really interested because this was something really new and I remembered my friend telling me that SFAM was their best work so I went and bought the album. Then I went home, put this record in my CD player and sat on my chair to listen. For the next 80 minutes the most amazing thing happened, I was taken to places I had never been before, I heard this melodies that flew all over the place, the rhythms were constantly changing and there was a display of musicianship that was beyond my beliefs.
I think it was Bosk that once said that what makes this record so special is that it changes the way you listen to music and in my case that is one of the reasons why it's my number 1 because after listening to this I was able to get into the prog rock world and as you can see in my list I really love prog rock.
It is also very special for me because it's probably the only album that no matter when I listen to it I enjoy it fully and never get bored with it

Favorite songs: The whole album

Sort of in the same boat, but if someone came in on SFaM, I can let it slide.  The album just has not aged well IMO, whereas I&W, Awake, FII, and 6DoIT have.  I just find myself never wanting to listen to SFaM; so much like SB's Snow, I tend to keep it low on my album rankings within the band.
