Sooo...since I was on the fence between GV and TIOA, I changed my vote from the former to the latter to avoid the tie-breaker round (since I absolutely hate doing those). Anyway, that means TIOA is now out, and we get to move on :lol

Guide Vocal

You guys are nuts. Duke's End is literally just a recap of the themes. Guide Vocal is a song in its own right. A short one, yeah, but a damned good song.
-
Also, some people may have noticed that I've been trying to stir up some discussion of the individual songs on this, my favorite Genesis album. I mean, where else do you really dissect an album like this other than when trying to rank the songs?
-
But that's okay, I'll just keeping talking to myself. It's cool.

Guide vocal is an amazing song, but the part in Duke's travels is just a little bit better imo. Because of that I am saving most of my praise for that song. Maybe I'm thinking about it the wrong way but it just feels strange to put two songs in the top where one is a little part of the other. Hopefully this makes sense to you :D. Also I can't imagine the album end in any other way than with Duke's end.
Do you think a song's role on the album should factor in your ranking of it or should you treat every song as an isolated piece?
-
Guide Vocal is really cool, but given how short it is, I am surprised it made it this far.

When it comes back at the end of Duke's Travels, it's different somehow, it has a different meaning. The first time, we've been introduced to Duke and his loneliness and his obsession with the Duchess, and then the Guide Vocal shows up and tells him that from this point on, he's on his own. Damn, it's a cold world, ain't it? Now, the story is pretty sketchy to begin with, but near as I can tell, "Turn It On Again" is something of a bright spot in the story, with Duke understanding that he's alone, but at least he gets some pleasure from the TV and the radio. "You're just another face that I know from the TV show, but I have known you for so very long, I feel you're like a friend." Then after Duke's Travels, the Guide Vocal returns to reinterate Duke's crappy situation. He's leaving (again?) and Duke will (again?) be alone. And this time, he really means it.

I'm definitely not arguing with you. If I didn't think the song was awesome i wouldn't put it in the top half of the album. The thing is as well that we are measuring awesomeness and not awesomeness per minute. If we did guide vocal would probably be my number one. Also it's really not far between GV and DE. Tomorrow I might change my mind. Looking at the results so far it doesn't look like that would change much though.

No, it's cool, I didn't think you were arguing. In fact, I started off trying to say how Guide Vocal is different the second time, but in the process, I figured out that it's really not. The Duke Suite is awesome, but it doesn't really survive close scrutiny of its lyrics. There's really not enough there.

I just wanted to say that the reprise of Guide Vocal in Duke's Travels is one of the greatest Genesis moments. That gives me chills.
Anyway, voting for Duke's End again.

When Phil sings "I call you, for I must leave" and Tony hits that high string note, it gets me, every time.

Guide vocal...
This has been an extremely disappointing survivor.... :'(

Why choose to throw away either Guide Vocal or Duke's End when you can opt for Heathaze? :P

Why choose to throw away either Guide Vocal or Duke's End when you can opt for Heathaze? :P
Because it occurred to me that while Guide Vocal is really cool...it's more of an outro to the opening "suite"...it doesn't hold up well has a stand alone track. Also, I knew that it was on the block next, so I chose to just go with the flow.....THIS TIME. ::)

Because Heathaze is awesome. The imagery is poetry are amazing.
