I have noticed there磗 a lot of great quality in this forum regarding the music skills of members. I think this is because of the nature of Dream Theater磗 music, very complex and thoughtful music, that attracts many musicians. Anyway, lets see here your videos :) .
I guess I磍l start. I磎 probably the noob-iest member here regarding music skills, but what the heck ;D . Here磗 me ruining some Dream Theater songs (Pull me Under and Erotomania).

Sorry for using megavideo.
Anyway, I don't play piano (which you can probably tell from my hands), so I have this cheap keyboard with no sustain pedal and no weighted keys.
I know I played it faster than it is in the song but that's because I just like it a little more when I play it like that.. Don't know why.

Here is me playing The Spirit Carries On solo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jw_J2NjbEsQ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jw_J2NjbEsQ)
I had originally (tried) to learn it when I was only a year in to playing guitar, and it really didn't go very well at all. But I did get the patterns in the solo down, so now that I revisited it, it became much easier :) Not the best quality, sorry, but I was just having some fun with it =P

metalcore > death metal in terms of the type of bass style ABR is. So, you would have more experience playing ABR style stuff.

So much fail...my god. Cannibal Corpse easily has one of the most talented bassists I've ever heard. I can't name one good metalcore bassist, and I used to listen to a LOT of metalcore.

You completely misread my post. I meant, in terms of playing the type of style AUGUST BURNS RED is, which is metalcore, he would have more experience...

This will be my first post here, so hello everybody.
One of the main reasons why I'm joining is because I love Dream Theater and I love to play guitar. Today I tried to upload my first DT cover on youtube which is the volumepedal solo from Count of Tuscany, but it got removed straight away because of "WMG's copyright claim". So what should I do? Any tips to get around this stupidity?

I'm a big Riff guitarist, but since I'm not currently in a band, the best things that I can share with you guys are some of the acoustic songs I've written:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMoLKF6097s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWLjq1e4t1M
But damn, I wish I could share with you guys some of my big electric guitar riffs. Those are the fun things to play ;D
By the way, a lot of you guys are technically amazing! I've only been playing for a little over 4 years now, and I would love to be able to play like some of you. I would love to hear some of your original pieces, as I'm sure a lot of you have made some great music with your great technical abilities.
Edit: So I decided to post a song showing my big riff electric side of me in another thread if you guys are interested in hearing it. https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=7872.0
-
Well, if anyone wants to hear my original songs, I made a thread for it in this subforum. Check it out!

I recorded myself playing Wait For Sleep at a concert a couple days ago, but I made a mistake during my performance.
I'm playing it again in a couple weeks though, and Ill post it if I have a better performance.

I wrote this guy a little while ago, and I wanted to share with y'all here.
It's an acoustic song called "Carefree", which is my take on writing a PT acoustic song in vein of "Normal", "Trains" and "Time Flies".

this isnt a video, i tried to put it on youtube but it gets caught as copyright. and im pretty sure theres like 2 other people on this board that like paramore, but i did a cover of misery business with isolated bass, drums, and vocal tracks. all the guitars on this are me

if you dont like paramore, check out the other stuff ive played in my youtube link below

Here's a brand new jam i just did. A little rusty new years blues on my hollow body. Forgive the mistakes, this guitar isn't really made for this kind of playing/music and it's a little tough to get to the high notes on this thing! haha.

It's labeled "10jam"
Give it a listen!

https://vimeo.com/14170099
That was fucking DEAD ON, both tone and playing wise. Great job! Also, how did you get such a great tone, it looked like you were using the neck/middle pickup?
-
Thank you, sir! I was actually just using the middle pickup. my guitar was plugged into a line 6 ux1 and I had its software running a chain of a Tube Screamer, some tweed amp, and a bit of reverb. i had the audio output through my iPod dock speakers. I played the Pride and Joy track pitch shifted up so I could play along in E and I had iMovie capture the audio and video from the onboard camera/microphone, which is why I couldn't really make the guitar any louder. How you hear it in the video is kind of a misrepresentation because standing there the track volume was really low and my guitar was super loud, so it was real hard to hear SRV in order to keep time.
-
It certainly sounded more than fine. What made it even better was that you got all the little slides down and random barely audible notes he plays in gaps perfectly as well, so it sounded virtually indistinguishable from the actual song. Pro!
I've been considering getting a virtual amp setup going for a while now, and I suppose this year might be finally time to bite the bullet as it's the only way I'll be getting tones like that without a pickup upgrade and an actual tube screamer. Anyway, I'm still mindblown by that cover.

-
Good playing, especially considering you are improvising. I didn't notice many mistakes :)
Maybe too many twiddly-widdly fast runs in there, but I guess that's what happens when you record an impro after having listened to the Wizard :lol
What camera did you use for the recording? Good quality!
-
Canon IXUS 12015, it got 720p recording; but somehow I didn't see that option to upload the full 720p version, so it's only 240p, but still kinda descent for a digital camera.
Yeah, I hear that a lot that I do too much fast runs, but it's just so much fun. This was the first time that I just tried something by ear, and soon is an a great song to start with because it's easy (or at least the key I used is easy: Am, C, Dm, Am, C).
-
Huh? I had no problems watching your video in 720p mode, so obviously you did upload it :)

That was pretty good. There's a couple of important things though. You should learn to play the ascending/descending arpeggios with one hand. It's much more accurate and it will allow you to use your left hand for bass accompaniment/octaves. Also, your trills need practice. They're a bit out of control. But overall it's not bad at all.
-
Huh? I had no problems watching your video in 720p mode, so obviously you did upload it :)
Yeah you're right, I see it now.

I've seen that one before. Apart from the singer's attempt at the F# and the keyboardist's backing vocals at the end it's all pretty solid. I can't comment on the details because the sound from the camera isn't clear enough, but it does seem like you are doing a good job on the guitar ;)
I made a fun cover of the song "Mute City" from the SNES game "F-Zero" two months ago. Don't want to post it in this thread, because the video actually only shows me playbacking to my finished recording :lol And I've already made a thread about it here: https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=17036.0 (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=17036.0)

I just recorded a video of my piano playing. I'm playing Tifa's Theme from Piano Collections of Final Fantasy VII. Amazing song...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Bla4m7JG9w (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Bla4m7JG9w)
I had MASSIVE trouble actually recording it. My original plan was to use the Mac's built in iSight and just send the keyboard's sound directly to the computer. After fiddling with it for weeks, I just said FUCK IT and put my iPhone on a stand and went for it. And I was actually quite satisfied with the end result. :lol
Remember though, I'm no piano player, I'm a guitar player! :P Go easy on me!

Sounds good! Cool song choice, too! So what's next, Aeris' Theme? ;)

Whats with the ride sound?! :D
-
Dude, it's amazing what overall sound we got out the equipment we had on that night. The sound guy that was hired never showed up that night, and it was his equipment he was going to bring. So, we all drove home bringing in our PA systems, hooked them all together and that was our PA. The only thing picked up on that gig were the keys, vocals and bass. Drums weren't picked up, and I had to crank my amp to the max to compete with the rest.

Here's some videos of me playing in my friend's band a couple of weeks ago. It went ok I guess. Our drummer's kit kept moving because he didn't have a rug, I messed up at one point in Foreplay, my microphone wasn't working during Voyage/Long Time, and the jam in Bounce was very messy and a completely last minute thing and I pleaded with them to just drop it before the show since we ran through a jam on it once ever. :lol Oh, and Jake forgot his capo so he had to figure out how to play the chords on the spot during Voyage, hence the messiness.... yeah, we had a lot of technical problems during this show. :lol
Oh, and the sound quality was iffy too. Jake, the singer, was actually the sound guy for the show, but obviously he couldn't control the sound while we were up on stage. :lol The camera's audio came out very bass heavy, but still listenable.

Our church got a new grand piano, and two weeks later our praise band was asked to play the Gathering Music. They told me to pick the songs, and I've always wanted to play "Morning Has Broken" (the Cat Stevens version with the Rick Wakeman piano breaks) on a grand, plus it's actually a hymn, so win-win.
Here is a horrible-quality video of our praise band leading the congregation in "Morning Has Broken" with me on the grand. (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=1746826632402&l=2753783802399260102)

I have 2 recordings up on YouTube so far, no video of me playing yet but one has a great slideshow! They are worth viewing though just because the audio is really high quality (that's what is important right???). Here goes:
Dream Theater - "Lines In The Sand" guitar solo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kyAWYgsdjc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kyAWYgsdjc)
Steve Vai - "For The Love Of God" guitar cover: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1OefFvchVE&feature=related (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1OefFvchVE&feature=related)
Hopefully you can hear I got them quite close to the originals! I may come back here once I have uploaded some videos of me actually playing which shouldn't be too long. :rollin

Here is a video of my Band Two Sly Deuce playing our song "Water Dinner." Aside from the fact I messed up my own solo, I don't think it's half bad :lol. I'm the Guitarist/Lead Singer.

I dug out a wah pedal and messed around with a guitar solo for a song I've been working on. Maybe a bit over the appropriate level of wankery and more than a bit over the appropriate level of wah-ing, but it was fun to do. Lots of legato licks in here.

Does anyone here know Mr. Fastfinger's site https://www.guitarshredshow.com (https://www.guitarshredshow.com)? It's by the same guy that created the DT cartoon animations. A very cool website for guitarists. I was using Mr. Fastfinger's "Lesson in 7 modes" (aeolian mode) as background music for my improvisation practice. While I was sitting here, letting my mind fly, suddenly something strange happened...
I recorded it (audio only), so you can take a listen here:

I like it! I think it could sound even cooler if the lead sound had more reverb on it, because the current sound is a bit too dry for the airy composition. Apart from that, it rocks :metal

Actually, y'all are tight in every regard and the guitarist is quite a joy to hear.

One of our first performances actually, I didn't want to start with excuses, but the sound is awful, we played every song way too fast that night, and the harmonies are way off mostly. We can do way better, but you'll see that soon when we record a better show!

I got bored and decided to subject you all to some bad videos of good songs. Here are some Beatles songs we did last year with my church band. No bass or electric guitar, but we had a drummer, some horns, and some singers, so I figured we could do something with the horns and no one would notice.
This is what happens when Methodists try to rock.

I borrowed an acoustic from a friend and have been messing about every since, my fingers are practically bleeding. I'm terrible, but also newish to it, so be nice...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8mdQ2oRUSQ
-
Your left hand is great! That was my biggest problem when starting to play guitar. You need to work on your right hand though, try playing with a pick, or with the nails of your index- and middle finger, instead of your thumb. Unless you're the female version of Devin Townsend, then play with your thumb.
-
Aww thanks for replying :) my left hand is okay thanks to years of violin lessons, I really struggle to control a plectrum though; I can get the up/down strokes easily it's just being able to actually hit the right strings... also this is gonna sound weird, but I tried playing that song with the softest plectrum I could get and it just sounds so... brash and loud. Maybe it's supposed to... can you play softly with a plectrum on an acoustic!?
But yeah I'm gonna get lessons soon I think, just getting used to playing random stuff and messing about, I used to play classical guitar about ten ish years ago so it's not all brand new, but I've still forgotten anything I learned back then.

A bit difficult to hear, especially considering you're missing guitars and vocals, but that all sounded alright. Your drumming is awesome.

Oh, thanks a lot, really appreciate your compliment! :blush :tup Yes, I put an effort into covering that song..... our guitarist didn't, so he doesn't appear on linked video.... ::)

Hi guys, some of you requested me to do some classical videos some time ago and I recorded a few recently so I figured I'd post them here. I recorded a Beethoven sonata, Choros by Villa-Lobos and an Etude by Debussy. Constructive criticism is always welcome ;)

Here's a post I made in a different thread,
Jammed at the Whisky with some friends a few months ago. Here's the video. We're not a band, just some friends jamming. Ignore the singing - the guy who sang isn't a singer, he was just a friend who wanted to help out cause we needed someone to sing. I'm on guitar. Fucked up a few times, but what can ya do? hahaha. (please no trolling about the singing.)

Yeah, wolfking, that was pretty amazing!

Thanks heaps guys. Always liked that solo so just decided to learn it and do a vid.
It's an ibanez Prestige RG. It's the same one Marco Sfogli plays, as shown here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7YIWOSBX_U
The amp is an old Peavy Bandit. I've always loved the sound of it. it's not that great for live, but for the odd recording and at home practice, it's incredible.

Uploaded a few acoustic originals to youtube. Most of them I referred to as "songs" in the descriptions, but really they're just little parts intended to be used as intros or interludes on my band's upcoming debut release, or for future releases. I hope you enjoy them. There are MANY more pieces of music to come, if you guys like these!

Hi!
I am new guy here.
Last weekend i was testing my new phone with awesome camera.
Here is the result https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImKtti_y8Ss
Learning to live is pretty challenging song, becouse it is quite long to play right on one shot ;D
It was nervcracking becouse when i played to 6-11 min mark of the song there was some little mistake and i have to start all over again ;D
I maked this video about 4h
At the end i was pretty tired... I guess it is seen on the video.
There is some timing issues and little mistakes, but i hope it wont bother anyone ;)
And i am sorry for my bad english. i hope this text is still readable

Nice cover, guys! I'm definitely enjoying your playing on the organ in this video. I'm a sucker for organs, and no, I cannot play one卙ehe.
Again, good cover :tup
Thanks a lot! I've been mesmerized by the Hammond sound ever since I was a kid and I still eat up any music which has a good ol' tonewheen organ in it.

You're so kind, thank you so much! I'm obviously mega amateur but I'm having fun... trying to play Drown with Me at the moment, my fingers are nearly bleeding, some interesting chords going down there for sure, expect a video soon :P

I've tried playing DWM as well (on electric guitar, I don't have an acoustic one) and the chords are interesting indeed. PT's songs aren't too difficult, but Steven uses some weird chords :D

I'm trying to figure out a version of Deform to Form a Star but there are no sheets online so I'm just pissing about doing my own thing with it, see what you think! Comments gratefully heard :) I know there's loads more work to be done and lots of it isn't at all fluent yet but I wanted to share what I'd managed so far; I don't think I've ever tried to work a song out by ear before.

Wow, not fair. You play piano and guitar.

Technically, this is the audio of me playing an instrument with a picture in the background, but I don't think there's a thread for posting that, so I'm posting here.
My arrangement of "For the First Time in Forever" from Frozen. Not perfect, but a good enough take to keep.

Hey guys, I'm new here as well! Just wanted to share my (relatively new) Youtube channel with the community
https://www.youtube.com/user/zhangshred
I recently put up a split screen cover of the unison in ACOS with my bass player buddy Carlos
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFH_ni6MLDQ
I've also got videos of the solos from Scarred, The Enemy Inside, and Behind the Veil!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrgli2vWleU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYGeZrDEtxQ
I recently got my hands on a used Eleven Rack, which has made the whole recording process much easier; hopefully I can upload a vid once every other week or so, cheers!

Also, I just noticed the girl rockin out back stage. Wish I knew that at the time.
Ever since this show I knew someone videotaped it, but I figured it just disappeared. Then in 2014, the guy who recorded it uploaded it to youtube and told my friend about it. It was so much fun to see it for the first time after 14 years.
-
Okay, I don't think I posted this yet. An 11 song opener set my band did last January, I'm on the left. Songs and links are in the description, but they are as follows:
W.A.S.P. - Wild Child
Volbeat - Heaven Nor Hell
Green Day - Basket Case
Bush - Machine Head
The Cult - Fire Woman
Judas Priest - Hellion / Electric Eye (I break a string during the solo and employ the "push down slightly on the bar and keep playing" move, to try to stay in tune)
Ozzy - Bark At The Moon
Alice In Chains - Man In The Box
Theory of a Deadman - Bad Girlfriend
Volbeat - Still Counting
AC/DC - Walk All Over You
I turned down the mic gain on the camera mic a lot and it still overpowered. Couple that with sound guys that don't know their ass from a hole in the ground and it's pounding. So irritating.

Assuming the link works, this is a video made nearly 30 years ago as part of a "record production" class I was taking at community college. The basic format of the class is that local bands/artists would come into our class for three consecutive weeks (three hours per class session). The first day we recorded basic tracks. The second day we recorded vocals and overdubs. The third week we did the mixing. It was all done on a 24-track board and recorded on 2-inch tape.
Toward the end of the semester, the instructor got the idea to have some of the students in the class record a cover of a song and make it sound as close to the original as possible. Although most of the musicians in the class played metal, we started out with a Smokey Robinson song (I don't remember which one). The drummer had problems with not rushing the beat, so we suggested doing a song that we were all comfortable with and picked The Trooper. After doing the audio recording, we went to the instructor's studio to record this video. The video is REALLY 80s and very cheesy. It's also poorly synched, but I always get a kick out of watching it, and I've always been really happy with the audio recording (although it really doesn't sound much like the original).
By the way, I'm the bass player (who also got the audio production credit). And NO, I did not always use that much Aqua Net!
-
Wow, not bad! :tup
Everyone was tight, including the singer, who is excellent. Nice job on the dual leads, bass and drums locked in. Sound quality is good, too, especially for 30 years ago.
-

Thanks! The funny thing is that the singer was a bit of an afterthought. He wasn't a metal guy, and none of the rest of us really knew someone who could do it, but Jim had done sort of a jazz fusion song earlier in the semester, and I remembered liking his voice, so we asked him. I think there's one place where he muffed a line and we didn't fix it, but I was otherwise happy with his performance (notwithstanding the hospital scrubs he wore for the video...LOL!).
-
With that opening wail, I wasn't sure what to expect. Effects were a little thick on the voice there, but he was clearly hitting the notes naturally, and shit like Auto-tune didn't exist back then anyway.
-
I made a cover of Wither by DT :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bxx_blp6J8&lc=
Video was kind of quickly put together and the video quality is jank until I'm able to use a real camera, but I'm fairly happy with the cover itself and the audio quality.

Not me, but my 14 year old and her high school marching band from this past weekend.
https://youtu.be/rpdWvGZdqb0
They were supposed to be competing in the Western Band Association championships, but they got cancelled because of the California fires and bad air quality. Extremely disappointing for the kids who had been working up to this for months, but 13 schools came together and performed exhibitions for each other and parents. If I do say so myself, I think was their best performance of the season.
